Mercury in the 4th house is one of the four placements, with the Moon, Jupiter and Venus, that Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras both read well: the benefics are given the house's good things and the malefics are denied them. Saravali gives Mercury here money, relatives, good fortune, conveyances and learning; the Bhrigu Sutras give a learned, patient native, happy through his parents, with conveyances and land withdrawn if Mercury is with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn.
BPHS also names Mercury twice in the 4th house's own chapter, once for relatives and once for the mother, though neither verse puts Mercury in the 4th. This page sets out those statements, the yogas, what Mercury owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 4th house, Sukha Bhava.
Sources, and the mother
Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 4th-house texts speak about the mother and about ages at which conveyances arrive; this page reports the conditions and does not turn any of them into a statement about a parent or a date.
The planet of learning in the house of the home
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5 gives Bandhu Bhava conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, and lands and buildings. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 name it Bandhava, Griha, Vesma, Sukha, Jala, Patala, Bandhu and Hibuka. The Bhrigu Sutras' modern list (p. 14) adds the native place, private affairs, farms, mines and academic education. The last item needs care: BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 puts learning in the 5th, so "the 4th house shows education" follows the later tradition.
Learning appears in both readings of Mercury here anyway: Saravali's verse ends with it and the sutras open with it. Bhrigu Sutras Part I (p. 9) names Mercury "the chief governor for education". So the later list's education and the planet's education meet in this house, while BPHS's own list for the 4th does not include it. This page keeps the two layers apart.
The 4th is a Kendra and, with the 8th, a Chaturasra (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). It is also the nadir, a reference point for directional strength: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures Mercury from the 7th, so Mercury is three houses from both its peak in the 1st and its zero in the 7th, and this engine gives it 2 of 4 here.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 41
The verse in full: the native will be endowed with money and relatives, be fortunate, will have conveyances, all paraphernalia and relatives and be very learned. No condition is stated. Three of the five are on BPHS's list for the house: relatives, conveyances, and (as treasure) money.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 32-37
The sutras (p. 65): very active hands, patient, broad eyes, happiness from parents, learned and happy; in the 16th year wealth "by questionable means" (the commentator suggests it may mean a gift) and many conveyances; with a strong 4th lord, a palanquin. With Rahu, Ketu or Saturn the native is deprived of conveyances, has no land, is bitter with relations and deceitful. This app computes no such age. The engine's lines were written from the same chapter: favourable, "learning, property and real happiness through parents - a genuine wealth combination"; testing, "strain around property and family relations".
The reversing companions are worth noticing. The sutra names Rahu, Ketu and Saturn, not the Sun or Mars. The Sun is Mercury's most frequent companion, and Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 5 reads the Sun in the 4th harshly, yet the Mercury sutra does not list it. BPHS's general rule that Mercury takes a malefic's nature applies to every malefic; the sutra is narrower.
Other Views (p. 66). Brihat Jatak: learned. Phaldeepika: learned, a flatterer, wealthy, owning lands, with good friends, happy. Chamatkar Chintamani: wise, enjoying the company of friends, "Chief Accountant of the Government Secretariat", but deprived of ancestral property, which the Note explains by a 4th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The commentator also names Bhadra Yoga for an own-sign or exalted Mercury here. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are not in this app's source texts; they are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.
| Source | Reading | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 41 | Money, relatives, good fortune, conveyances, learning | None in the verse |
| Bhrigu Sutras 32-37 | Learned, patient, happy through parents | No land or conveyances, deceit, with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn |
| BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 | Happy with conveyances, free from accidents | A benefic in the 4th or connected to its lord |
| This app, phMercury4F | Learning, property and real happiness through parents | Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly sign |
| This app, phMercury4U | Strain around property and family relations | Any other dignity |
The two BPHS verses that name Mercury
BPHS Ch. 15, the 4th house's chapter, names Mercury in two slokas. Neither places Mercury in the 4th, but both bear on it.
- Sl. 5, relatives: Mercury in the Lagna, with a 4th lord that is itself a benefic and is aspected by another benefic, gives honour from one's relatives. Three conditions, all required. A Mercury in the 4th is not in the Lagna, so this sloka is met only when Mercury is elsewhere.
- Sl. 7, the mother: the 4th lord in an angle, Venus also in an angle and Mercury exalted, together indicate the mother's happiness. Mercury is exalted only in Virgo, which is the 4th for Gemini rising, and for Gemini the 4th lord is Mercury itself. So a Gemini-rising Mercury in the 4th meets two of the three conditions at once, being both the exalted Mercury and the 4th lord in an angle; only Venus in an angle remains.
Ch. 15's mother verses should not be read in reverse: they stack conditions and state only the favourable case. BPHS Ch. 32 also reads the mother from the stronger of the Moon and Mars (Sl. 18-21) and from the 4th counted from the Moon (Sl. 22-24), so the 4th from the Lagna is one of three places, not the answer.
Mercury beside the other planets in the 4th
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 5: without conveyances and relatives | Proud; a favourable turn later, though not wealth |
| Moon | Sl. 17: relatives, conveyances; neither very happy nor miserable | Very high status, many conveyances |
| Mars | Sl. 29: without relatives, goods and conveyances | Domestic disturbance, no land of his own |
| Mercury | Sl. 41: money, relatives, good fortune, conveyances, learning | Learned, patient, happy through parents |
| Jupiter | Sl. 53: relatives, conveyance, happiness, intelligence | Happy, wise, a landholder |
| Venus | Sl. 65: relatives, friends, conveyances, beauty, wealth | Intelligent, forgiving, happy |
| Saturn | Sl. 77: without relatives, conveyances, wealth | Loss of the mother, unless in own sign or exalted |
Mercury's Saravali verse is the only one in the column that names learning; Jupiter's names intelligence. Its sutra is the only one that names parents in the plural as a source of happiness. The pattern holds: the benefics get the house's good things, and nearly every Bhrigu result is conditional, Mercury's on its company, the others mostly on the 4th lord.
The Sun near midnight
Mercury is never more than one sign from the Sun, and the Sun's house follows the clock: the 1st around sunrise, the 10th around midday, the 4th around midnight. So a Mercury in the 4th belongs to a birth with the Sun in the 3rd, 4th or 5th, around the middle of the night. A Mercury in the 4th at a midday birth means the time or place needs checking first.
The page on what a missing birth time does explains what can be read without one. With the Sun in the 3rd, Mercury is in the 2nd sign from it and forms Vesi; with the Sun in the 5th, Vasi. Saravali Ch. 14 Sl. 3-5 and 7-9 read Vesi by Mercury as soft-spoken, modest, a servant in penury, and Vasi by Mercury as sweet in speech and good-looking. With the Sun in the 4th too, the Sun's own Saravali verse for the 4th (without conveyances and relatives) sits beside Mercury's, and Mercury is often combust, which removes its whole position score in the engine.
Gemini and Pisces rising: Mercury owns the 4th
For Gemini rising the 4th is Virgo, and Mercury there is the 4th lord, exalted, and also the Lagna lord. For Pisces rising the 4th is Gemini, and Mercury there is the 4th lord in its own sign, and also the 7th lord. In both, the 4th lord occupies the 4th, which BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 40 reads as "a minister with wealth of all kinds: skilful, honourable, learned, happy" (in the text: a minister with all kinds of wealth, skilful, virtuous, honourable, learned, happy and well disposed to his spouse), one of the warmest rows in Ch. 24, and both form Bhadra Yoga, Mercury in its own or exaltation sign in an angle.
BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 2 gives residential comforts in full degree when the 4th is occupied by its own lord, or by the Lagna lord, and aspected by a benefic; the aspect is part of the rule. For Gemini rising, Mercury is both the 4th lord and the Lagna lord in the 4th. Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10 form Kahal Yog when the 4th lord is in its own or exaltation sign joined to the 10th lord; for both Lagnas the 10th lord is Jupiter, so Jupiter beside Mercury in the 4th completes it. detectYogas has no Kahala rule.
The two Lagnas differ in BPHS Ch. 34. For Gemini, Mercury owns the 1st and 4th and is not named. For Pisces it owns the 4th and 7th, two angles and no trine, and Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 call it malefic and a killer; Sl. 2-7 say a benefic owning angles will not give benefic effects, Sl. 8-10 make Mercury the second-least affected, and this engine's Kendradhipati Dosha leaves Mercury out.
The Virgo degree question
For Gemini rising the degree matters. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 divide Virgo into exaltation (0-15 degrees), Moolatrikona (15-20) and own sign (20-30), and this engine's dignity label follows the same bands. Past 20 degrees Mercury is in its own sign, and BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 7's "Mercury exalted" is then not met; the worked chart below is exactly that case. The one-line reading for each house lord and the current dasha lord's action guidance read the same degree, so they print Own sign there too.
What Mercury owns, from each rising sign
Mercury is in your 4th when it occupies the fourth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. In Ch. 24, for lords placed in the 4th, the 9th and 10th lords bring its good things; the 6th, 8th and 12th lords remove them.
| Ascendant | Mercury's sign | Natural dignity | Mercury rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 4th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Cancer | Enemy | 3rd, 6th | Sl. 28: happy, wealthy, intelligent. Sl. 64: lacking happiness from the mother; very rich |
| Taurus | Leo | Friendly | 2nd, 5th | Sl. 16: wealth of all kinds. Sl. 52: happiness from the mother; a ruler, minister or teacher |
| Gemini | Virgo | Exalted | 1st, 4th | Sl. 4: happiness from both parents. Sl. 40: a minister, skilful, learned, happy |
| Cancer | Libra | Friendly | 3rd, 12th | Sl. 28 as above. Sl. 136: steady losses in land, conveyances and houses |
| Leo | Scorpio | Neutral | 2nd, 11th | Sl. 16 as above. Sl. 124: gains from maternal relatives, house and land |
| Virgo | Sagittarius | Neutral | 1st, 10th | Sl. 4 as above. Sl. 112: attentive to the mother, master of lands and houses |
| Libra | Capricorn | Neutral | 9th, 12th | Sl. 100: houses, conveyances, devotion to the mother. Sl. 136 as above |
| Scorpio | Aquarius | Neutral | 8th, 11th | Sl. 88: deprived of house and land. Sl. 124 as above |
| Sagittarius | Pisces | Debilitated | 7th, 10th | Sl. 76: truthful, intelligent, religious. Sl. 112 as above |
| Capricorn | Aries | Neutral | 6th, 9th | Sl. 64 as above. Sl. 100 as above |
| Aquarius | Taurus | Friendly | 5th, 8th | Sl. 52 as above. Sl. 88 as above |
| Pisces | Gemini | Own | 4th, 7th | Sl. 40 as above. Sl. 76 as above |
Two more BPHS rules apply by Lagna. Ch. 15 Sl. 4 gives fine houses when the 10th lord joins the 4th lord in an angle or trine: for Virgo rising Mercury is the 10th lord, and in the 4th it is in Sagittarius, the 4th lord Jupiter's own sign, so Jupiter beside it meets the sloka; for Sagittarius rising Mercury is the 10th lord in Pisces, again Jupiter's sign, but debilitated. Ch. 39 Sl. 37 gives a Raj Yoga when the 4th or 10th lord joins the 5th or 9th lord; for Taurus rising Mercury is the 5th lord in the 4th, Leo, so the Sun, the 4th lord, beside it forms one, and this app's Kendra-Kona check tests that kind of link.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary on the Sun in the 4th (p. 21) states the principle directly: "No house can prosper unless its lord is well placed." For a Mercury in the 4th that means the reading is never Mercury's alone except for Gemini and Pisces rising, where Mercury is the lord. For the other ten Lagnas the 4th lord is another planet, and its house, sign and company carry the house's result whatever Mercury contributes as an occupant.
BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11, among the Nabhash yogas, use the 4th and 10th as a pair: all benefics in the 4th and 10th, or all malefics in the 1st and 7th, form Yav Yog, the reverse arrangements Vajr Yog, and all planets in the 4th and 10th Vihag Yog. A benefic Mercury in the 4th is one of the planets Yav asks for there. Each needs every planet in a set of houses, so a single placement only ever supplies part of one.
The aspect on the 10th
From the 4th, aspectedHouses('mercury', 4) returns [10]: the 7th aspect on the 10th house, the other end of the 4th's axis. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Mercury the significator of the 10th, so a Mercury in the 4th aspects the house it signifies. The texts state no result for that, and this page states none. Mercury is a benefic in this engine, so the aspect raises the aspect score of any planet in the 10th.
Turned round, a Mercury in the 4th is aspected by any planet in the 10th, by Mars from the 1st or 9th, by Jupiter from the 12th or 8th and by Saturn from the 2nd or 7th. Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 25-66 read Jupiter's aspect on Mercury favourably in every sign group and Saturn's unfavourably except in Mercury's own signs; and Saturn is one of the three companions the sutras name as reversing Mercury here.
Saravali Ch. 26, Mercury by sign: Virgo (Gemini rising) virtuous, eloquent, skilled in writing and the arts; Gemini (Pisces rising) sweet in speech, very affluent, a poet; Leo (Taurus rising) famous and wealthy, independent, but without wisdom and with a weak memory; Libra (Cancer rising) honours the wise and guests; Sagittarius (Virgo rising) learned, a minister or teacher; Pisces (Sagittarius rising) good conduct, lives abroad, without shastra learning; Cancer (Aries rising) fond of living abroad, at odds with relatives.
Company is where the sutra turns, and Saravali Ch. 15's Mercury pairs add the detail: with Saturn (Sl. 19), one of the sutra's reversing three, an able poet but in debt, proud, deceiving and restless; with Jupiter, a scholar, wise and happy, and for Gemini and Pisces rising the Kahal partner; with Venus, very rich, good in speech; with the Moon, skilled in poems and fables, wealthy; with Mars, little wealth; with the Sun, in service with unsteady wealth. Sl. 23 adds that each result rises or falls with the vargas the two planets occupy.
For the mother, BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 read the 4th counted from the Moon as well. A Mercury that is 4th from your Moon is in your 4th house only when the Moon is in the Lagna sign; otherwise the two counts point at different signs. The Moon sign calculator gives the starting point for the second count.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mercury's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 4th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so the friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.
- Always favourable: Gemini (Exalted, Moolatrikona or Own sign, by degree) and Pisces (own).
- Never favourable: Sagittarius (debilitated) and Aries (Cancer, Neutral at best).
- Favourable with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Taurus, Cancer and Aquarius (otherwise Neutral; for Taurus rising the lord is the Sun, so the Sun beside Mercury in Leo drops it), and Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Capricorn (otherwise Enemy sign).
The row does not read the sutras' Rahu, Ketu and Saturn condition. The engine's house card for the 4th takes its tone from the 4th lord's dignity, which for Gemini and Pisces rising is Mercury's own. The app also computes the divisional charts BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to this house: fortunes from the Chaturthamsa (D4) and conveyances from the Shodashamsa (D16).
Timing
Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 list wealth, reputation, better knowledge, favour from the government, auspicious functions, happiness from wife and children, good health and profit in business for a Mercury exalted or in its own or a friend's sign. The 4th is not on that passage's house list (the 11th, 5th, 9th), so here dignity decides. The sub-period chapters list a Kendra, the 4th included, among the good positions for a sub-period lord.
For Gemini and Pisces rising the period is also the 4th lord's, which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 head "acquisition of house and land" and this app words as "gains in property, home comforts and vehicles"; for Gemini it is also the Lagna lord's. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Mercury Mahadasha page the sub-periods. For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Mercury in the 4th from the Moon is testing and is the engine's flagged intensified position for Mercury.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 23:34 IST on 20 September 2013 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Gemini-rising case and because Mercury sits past 20 degrees of Virgo. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Gemini 7.49 deg |
| Mercury | Virgo 23.90 deg, 4th house, Own sign (engine label); 1st and 4th lord |
| Also in the 4th | Sun, Virgo 3.89 deg |
| Jupiter | Gemini 22.97 deg, 1st house |
| Mars; Moon | Cancer 20.90 deg (Debilitated), 2nd; Pisces 20.22 deg, 10th |
| Venus, Saturn, Rahu | Libra, 5th house (Saturn exalted) |
| House line | Favourable: phMercury4F |
| dashaQuality for Mercury | Good |
| Yogas reported (selection) | Bhadra [Mercury] |
| Shad Bala (engine, of 20) | 14.88, Strong: position 7.5, aspect 3, natural 0.375, motion 1, direction 2, time 1 |
| Dasha | Mercury at birth (balance to 11 March 2026), then Ketu to 2033 |
Most of the 4th-lord rules are met. Mercury is the 4th lord and the Lagna lord in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 40, Ch. 15 Sl. 2's occupation clause), and the Moon in the 10th aspects the 4th, a benefic aspect, which completes Sl. 2 as worded. Bhadra forms. The Sun is 19.82 degrees away, so Mercury is not combust and keeps its position score; its Shad Bala is Strong, and the aspect score is the full 3 from the Moon.
The degree is the catch. At 23.90 degrees Mercury is in the band BPHS and the engine call own sign, not exaltation: its position score is 7.5, not 10, and Ch. 15 Sl. 7's "Mercury exalted" is not met. Venus is in the 5th, not an angle, so Sl. 7 fails in any case. Jupiter, the 10th lord, is in the Lagna, not with Mercury, so Kahal is not formed. Rahu, Ketu and Saturn are not with Mercury. The Moon in Revati, a Mercury nakshatra, starts the chart in Mercury's own Mahadasha, which ends in March 2026. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm Mercury is in the fourth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and note where the Sun is and whether Mercury is combust.
- Check for Rahu, Ketu or Saturn beside Mercury: the sutras' reversing condition.
- In Virgo, note the degree: past 20 degrees the texts say own sign.
- Find what Mercury rules and read both Ch. 24 slokas for those lords in the 4th.
- For Gemini and Pisces rising, read Ch. 15 Sl. 2 (benefic aspect on the 4th) and look for Jupiter beside Mercury (Kahal).
- For the mother, read the Moon and the 4th from the Moon as well, as BPHS Ch. 32 asks.
Method and limits are on the methodology page.
Over-readings
- "Mercury in the 4th means academic success." Learning is in both verses; BPHS's own list for the 4th does not include education, which is the later tradition.
- "Mercury in the 4th settles the mother's happiness." BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 7 needs three conditions, and BPHS reads the mother from three places.
- "Exalted Mercury in the 4th is always exalted." Past 20 degrees of Virgo the texts and the engine both say own sign.
- "The Sun beside Mercury reverses the sutra." The sutra names Rahu, Ketu and Saturn; BPHS's general rule on malefic company is broader.
- "Mercury in the 4th gives property." The app's line says so for a dignified Mercury; Ch. 24 makes the result depend on which houses Mercury rules.
- "Bhadra means a strong Mercury." In the worked chart it is; elsewhere combustion can leave a Bhadra Mercury Weak, since a combust planet loses its whole position score.
- "Mercury in the 4th makes the home a place of study." No verse says where learning happens, and BPHS's list for the 4th does not include education.
Questions about Mercury in the 4th
- Is Mercury good in the 4th house?
- The verses are favourable: money, relatives, conveyances and learning (Saravali); learned, patient, happy through parents (Bhrigu Sutras). The sutras withdraw land and conveyances and add deceit when Mercury is with Rahu, Ketu or Saturn.
- Which rising signs get Bhadra Yoga from Mercury in the 4th?
- Gemini (Mercury in Virgo) and Pisces (Mercury in Gemini). For both Mercury is also the 4th lord in the 4th.
- What does Mercury aspect from the 4th?
- Only the 10th house, by its 7th aspect. BPHS makes Mercury the significator of the 10th.
- Why is my Mercury in the 4th marked testing?
- Its dignity label is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Sagittarius rising (debilitated in Pisces) and Aries rising (Cancer) never get the favourable line.
- Does Mercury in the 4th say anything about my mother?
- The sutras give happiness through parents. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 7 names an exalted Mercury among three conditions for the mother's happiness. This app makes no statement about a parent.
- What is Kahal Yoga?
- BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10: the 4th lord and Jupiter in mutual angles with a strong Lagna lord, or the 4th lord in its own or exaltation sign joined to the 10th lord. The app does not compute it.
- Why does the birth time matter so much here?
- Mercury in the 4th needs the Sun in the 3rd, 4th or 5th, which is a birth around midnight. A different time puts Mercury in a different house.
- Is a Mercury dasha good with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 read a Mercury in its own, exalted or friendly sign well, with happiness from wife and children among the results. The app grades the period by dignity.
