Mercury in the 3rd house puts a benefic into a house the tradition treats as better suited to malefics. The 3rd is an Upachaya, where the Bhrigu Sutras' commentary says natural malefics give good results, and its significator is Mars. Yet the readings for Mercury here are mostly favourable: Saravali gives one who toils hard, is skilful and has co-born, if also without near and dear ones, very cunning and fickle; the Bhrigu Sutras give a good number of brothers, happiness, wealth and good qualities, all hinged on the strength of the 3rd lord.
This page sets out those verses and their conditions, the BPHS and Saravali rules that name Mercury in the 3rd, what Mercury owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava.
Sources, and siblings
Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The texts count siblings from planetary combinations; this page names those verses without reproducing the counts, and this app computes no sibling count. Nothing here is a statement about your family.
A benefic in a house of effort
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4 gives the 3rd valour, servants or attendants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction (Upadesh), journeys and the death of a parent. Ch. 32 narrows the family meaning to younger siblings (Sl. 18-21) and names Mars the significator (Sl. 31-34). The Bhrigu Sutras' modern list (p. 14) adds memory, short travel, communications, correspondence and writings, the signing of contracts, and the hands and arms; that list is later practice, not Parashara.
Several of those later items sit close to Mercury's own lists. Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13 give Mercury writing, the Veda, expertise and speech; BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 give it business dealings. This page keeps Parashara's list as the core and notes the overlap with the later list without building on it.
The 3rd is an Upachaya, an Apoklima and a house whose lordship BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 reads as giving evil effects, the mildest of the three such lordships ("in the ascending order"). A planet occupying the 3rd is one question, a planet ruling it another.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 40
The verse in full: the native will always toil hard, be devoid of near and dear, skilful, endowed with co-born, very cunning and fickle-minded. No condition is stated. Effort and skill are on the house's side; co-born is the house's family meaning, set beside a loss of near and dear ones; cunning and fickleness are temperament.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 25-31
The sutras (p. 64): a good number of brothers and great happiness; a son and land in the 15th year; wealth, high morals and good qualities. Then the 3rd lord decides: strong, the native is long-lived and tolerant and the brothers long-lived; weak, the brothers suffer and the native is timid. The same 3rd-lord condition recurs under the Sun, Jupiter and Venus (whose sutras add the 6th, 8th and 12th), so the occupant is never the whole answer. The commentator adds that from the 3rd Mercury aspects the 9th, which is why morals, prosperity and early children appear. The engine's lines were written from this chapter: favourable, "long-lived, supportive siblings and genuine prosperity"; testing, "strain with siblings and a more timid disposition".
The Other Views (p. 65) are sharper. Brihat Jatak: "a consummate rogue". Phaldeepika: courageous but of medium longevity, good brothers and sisters, working very hard for a living. Chamatkar Chintamani: business contacts and a business career, detachment, younger siblings dependent on him. The book's Note reads Brihat Jatak's line and Saravali's "unstable mind" as Mercury under malefic influence, and prefers the sutras. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are not in this app's source texts; they are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.
BPHS Ch. 14 Sloka 1
The 3rd house's chapter opens with its base rule: if the 3rd is joined or aspected by a benefic, the person will be endowed with co-born and be courageous. Mercury is a benefic only in benefic company by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, so Sl. 1 applies to a Mercury that is not beside a malefic.
| Source | Reading | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 40 | Toils hard, skilful, co-born; devoid of near and dear, very cunning, fickle | None in the verse |
| Bhrigu Sutras 25-31 | A good number of brothers, happiness, wealth, good qualities | Long-lived siblings if the 3rd lord is strong; timid if weak |
| BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 | Co-born and courage | A benefic joining or aspecting the 3rd |
| Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 21-24 | The native's friends are destroyed | Mercury in the 3rd aspected by Mars |
| This app, phMercury3F | Long-lived, supportive siblings and genuine prosperity | Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly sign |
| This app, phMercury3U | Strain with siblings and a more timid disposition | Any other dignity |
Saravali Ch. 34, and a variant that cannot happen
Saravali returns to the 3rd in its Ch. 34 Sl. 21-24. A 3rd owned and occupied by malefics destroys co-born, a benefic's sign occupied by benefics gives happiness from them; then three pairings: Saturn in the 3rd aspected by Mars causes destruction of co-born; Venus in the 3rd aspected by Jupiter increases happiness from them; and Mercury in the 3rd aspected by Mars, "the natives friends are destroyed". The translation notes that some texts read the Sun (Bhaskara Drishtah) in place of Mars (Angaraka Drishtah).
The variant cannot occur in a real chart. The Sun's only aspect is the 7th, so to aspect the 3rd it would have to be in the 9th. Mercury is never more than one sign from the Sun (the Bhrigu Sutras put it never more than 28 degrees away, p. 8); with Mercury in the 3rd the Sun is in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th. A Sun aspecting a 3rd-house Mercury is therefore impossible, and the Mars reading is the only one that can apply. The same holds for Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 25-66, which read a Sun's aspect on Mercury in every sign group, an aspect that cannot happen.
Mars can aspect the 3rd from three places: the 9th by its 7th aspect, the 12th by its special 4th-place aspect, and the 8th by its special 8th-place aspect. Those are the positions to check for Saravali's friendship reading. By the Bhrigu Sutras commentary's rule on the 1st house (p. 62), a malefic's aspect also stops Mercury acting as a benefic, so the same Mars aspect removes BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1's benefic condition.
BPHS Ch. 14 and Mercury
- Sl. 2-3: good results when the 3rd lord together with Mars aspects or occupies the 3rd; "destruction at once of co-born" when those two are with a malefic or in a malefic's sign. Mercury enters these slokas only as the 3rd lord, for Aries and Cancer rising.
- Sl. 4-4 1/2: the sex of younger siblings is read from the gender of the planets and signs involved: female planets for sisters, male for brothers, mixed for both. Mercury is neuter in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 19; Sl. 4 does not say how a neuter planet counts, and this page does not supply a rule.
- Sl. 7-11: counting verses. The first puts Mercury in the 3rd while the 3rd lord joins the Moon and Mars joins Saturn. This page names the combinations without their numbers, and this app computes no sibling count.
- Sl. 15: the effects for brothers and sisters are to be announced only after estimating the strength of the combinations, the chapter's closing instruction.
Mercury beside the other planets in the 3rd
| Planet | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 4: valorous, strong; loss of co-born | Brave, a good name; no younger brothers, elder brothers not surviving |
| Moon | Sl. 16: protects co-born, valorous, learned | Average sisters, a good number of brothers; poor harvests, loss in the 24th year |
| Mars | Sl. 28: courageous, unconquerable; bereft of co-born | No younger siblings, gains, friction with brothers; long-lived brothers in own sign or exaltation |
| Mercury | Sl. 40: toils hard, skilful, co-born; cunning, fickle | A good number of brothers, happiness, wealth |
| Jupiter | Sl. 52: ever successful, yet humiliated | Miserly, a good number of brothers, clever and determined |
| Venus | Sl. 64: happy and rich, little enthusiasm | Miserly; a good number of brothers, success through determined effort |
| Saturn | Sl. 76: courageous, charitable, intelligent | Loss of younger siblings unless own sign or exalted |
Two patterns show. The natural malefics get courage here and, in two of three Saravali verses, lose siblings in the same verse; the benefics Jupiter and Venus are lukewarm. Mercury fits neither pattern. Its Saravali verse gives effort and skill rather than courage, and keeps the co-born the malefics lose. In the sutras "a good number of brothers" is shared by the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus without a dignity condition; Saturn needs its own sign or exaltation for it, and Mars denies younger siblings.
The Sun beside Mercury: Vesi and Vasi
With Mercury in the 3rd the Sun is in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th, which in this engine's whole-sign houses puts the birth in the hours of darkness before sunrise. With the Sun in the 2nd, Mercury is in the 2nd sign from it and forms Vesi; with the Sun in the 4th, Mercury is in the 12th from it and forms Vasi. Saravali Ch. 14 Sl. 3-5 and 7-9 read Vesi by Mercury as soft-spoken, modest, a servant, suffering penury, and Vasi by Mercury as sweet in speech, good-looking, obedient to others' orders.
With the Sun in the 3rd too, the Sun's Saravali verse for the 3rd (valorous, strong, loss of co-born) sits beside Mercury's (co-born), the engine counts the Sun among its malefics, and Mercury is often combust, which in this engine removes its whole position score. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 14 adds that the Sun in the 3rd "will destroy the preborn" (elder siblings), followed at once by Sl. 15's instruction to weigh strength first. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 4 reads Mercury with the Sun as in service, sweet in speech, with fame, money and learning, and unsteady wealth.
Aries and Cancer rising: Mercury owns the 3rd
For Aries rising Mercury owns Gemini (the 3rd) and Virgo (the 6th), and in the 3rd it is in its own sign. For Cancer rising it owns Virgo (the 3rd) and Gemini (the 12th), and in the 3rd it is exalted. In both, the 3rd lord is in the 3rd, which BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 27 reads as happiness through co-born, wealth and children, a cheerful and very happy nature, the cleanest reading for siblings in the set. Ch. 14 Sl. 2 adds good results when the 3rd lord occupies the 3rd together with Mars, and Sl. 5-6 give sibling happiness when the 3rd lord is exalted, which is the Cancer case.
The Bhrigu Sutras' 3rd-lord condition, that a strong 3rd lord gives long-lived siblings and a long-lived native, is met by Mercury itself for these two Lagnas. Against that stand the other lordships: Ch. 24 Sl. 63 reads the 6th lord in the 3rd as quick to anger and at odds with co-born (Aries), and Sl. 135 the 12th lord in the 3rd as without happiness from siblings (Cancer). BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22 and 27-28 call Mercury malefic for both. The 3rd lordship is the mildest of the three Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 read poorly.
What Mercury owns, from each rising sign
Mercury is in your 3rd when it occupies the third sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. In Ch. 24 the lords of the angles and the 9th bring valour and good sibling relations into the 3rd, and the Trika lords take them away.
| Ascendant | Mercury's sign | Natural dignity | Mercury rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 3rd |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Gemini | Own | 3rd, 6th | Sl. 27: happiness through co-born. Sl. 63: quick to anger, at odds with co-born |
| Taurus | Cancer | Enemy | 2nd, 5th | Sl. 15: valorous, wise, miserly with a benefic. Sl. 51: attached to co-born, miserly |
| Gemini | Leo | Friendly | 1st, 4th | Sl. 3: valour "equal to a lion", wealth. Sl. 39: valour, servants, self-earned wealth |
| Cancer | Virgo | Exalted | 3rd, 12th | Sl. 27 as above. Sl. 135: without happiness from siblings |
| Leo | Libra | Friendly | 2nd, 11th | Sl. 15 as above. Sl. 123: skilful in every kind of work, happy with siblings |
| Virgo | Scorpio | Neutral | 1st, 10th | Sl. 3 as above. Sl. 111: happiness from brothers, eloquent, truthful |
| Libra | Sagittarius | Neutral | 9th, 12th | Sl. 99: happiness from siblings, wealth. Sl. 135 as above |
| Scorpio | Capricorn | Neutral | 8th, 11th | Sl. 87: without sibling happiness, lacking helpers. Sl. 123 as above |
| Sagittarius | Aquarius | Neutral | 7th, 10th | Sl. 75: difficulty in the matter of children. Sl. 111 as above |
| Capricorn | Pisces | Debilitated | 6th, 9th | Sl. 63 as above. Sl. 99 as above |
| Aquarius | Aries | Neutral | 5th, 8th | Sl. 51 as above. Sl. 87 as above |
| Pisces | Taurus | Friendly | 4th, 7th | Sl. 39 as above. Sl. 75 as above |
Gemini and Virgo rising carry the Lagna lord into the 3rd: Ch. 24 Sl. 3 gives valour "equal to a lion", wealth, honour and intelligence, the strongest valour line in the set. For Virgo Mercury is also the 10th lord, and Sl. 111 gives the 10th lord in the 3rd eloquence and truthfulness, close to Mercury's own speech. Capricorn rising is the hard row by dignity: Mercury debilitated in Pisces as the 6th and 9th lord. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale every one of these rows by the planet's strength: full, half or a quarter.
Aspect, strength and the wider charts
From the 3rd, aspectedHouses('mercury', 3) returns [9]: the 7th aspect on the 9th house, the house of fortune and the father. Mercury is a benefic in this engine, so the aspect raises the aspect score of a planet there. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary reads it as morals, prosperity and children (p. 64). Directional strength is two houses from its peak in the 1st (BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7), so this engine gives 2.67 of 4.
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 read happiness through co-born from the Drekkana (D3). The Drekkana calculator builds it. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 13-17 add the Bhratru Karaka in the Char Karakas calculator, a significator of siblings that changes from chart to chart, and the Vikram Pada (A3) in the Bhava Padas calculator.
Two BPHS verses use the 3rd as a place where a hard planet does no harm: Ch. 39 Sl. 17, a Raja Yoga (benefics in the 1st, 2nd and 4th with a malefic in the 3rd), and Ch. 43 Sl. 65-66, longevity slokas (malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th with benefics in the angles, or in the 6th, 7th and 8th, give long or full life). Both want a malefic in the 3rd. A benefic Mercury in the 3rd is not that malefic; a Mercury turned malefic by its company might be, and the slokas do not say whether such a Mercury counts.
A third verse uses the 3rd for weakness rather than hardness. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 19 gives a Raja Yoga when debilitated planets occupy the 3rd, 6th and 8th while a strong Lagna lord aspects the Lagna. A Mercury in the 3rd is debilitated only for Capricorn rising, in Pisces, so that is the one Lagna where a 3rd-house Mercury can be one of the planets that sloka asks for. The app does not test every Ch. 39 verse.
Argala gives the 3rd a structural role. BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9: a planet in the 11th from any house causes Argala on it, and a planet in the 3rd from that house obstructs it. A Mercury in the 3rd house is therefore an obstructing planet for any Argala that planets in the 11th cast on the Lagna. Ch. 31 also gives a reading for the 3rd itself: an unobstructed Argala with aspect on the 3rd denotes happiness from co-born. The Argala calculator shows both for your chart.
Company is the other variable, and Saravali Ch. 15's Mercury pairs read it: with Mars (Sl. 13), an unlucky wife, little wealth, work with gold and iron, an architect, which Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 156) reads as "eloquent but disputative"; with Saturn (Sl. 19), an able poet but in debt, proud, deceiving and restless; with the Moon, skilled in poems; with Venus, very rich, good in speech; with Jupiter, a scholar, wise and happy. Mars and Saturn are malefics, so either beside Mercury in the 3rd also removes BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1's benefic condition.
Saravali Ch. 26, Mercury by sign, adds the sign layer: Gemini (Aries rising) sweet in speech, an able speaker and poet, proficient in work; Virgo (Cancer rising) virtuous, eloquent, skilled in writing; Leo (Gemini rising) famous and independent but without wisdom and untruthful; Libra (Leo rising) business in many directions; Pisces (Capricorn rising) good conduct but no learning in shastra.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mercury's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 3rd is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so the friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.
- Always favourable: Aries (own) and Cancer (exalted).
- Never favourable: Capricorn (debilitated) and Taurus (Cancer, Neutral at best).
- Favourable with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Gemini, Leo and Pisces (otherwise Neutral; for Gemini rising the lord is the Sun, so the Sun beside Mercury in Leo drops it), and Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Aquarius (otherwise Enemy sign).
The code softens the source's harder sibling language into strain or distance and makes no claim about anyone's survival. The row reads dignity, not the sutras' 3rd-lord condition or Saravali's Mars aspect.
Timing
Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 make the dashas of the 3rd, 6th and 11th lords, of planets placed in those houses, and of planets joined with them unfavourable, with Rahu and Ketu excepted (in a bracketed note). On the other side, the sub-period chapters list the 3rd, verse after verse, with the angles, trines and 11th as a good placement, usually adding "with strength" or a dignity condition. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 read a Mercury exalted or in its own or a friend's sign well, and do not name the 3rd among the houses.
For Aries and Cancer rising the period is also the 3rd lord's, which this app words as "effort-heavy, generally more testing period for courage and sibling matters". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Mercury Mahadasha page the sub-periods. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Mercury in the 3rd from the Moon is "indifferent" in the engine's benefic rule, the Upachaya pattern: the 3rd from the Moon suits hard planets better than soft ones.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 03:24 IST on 6 June 2014 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Aries-rising case: Mercury in its own sign as 3rd lord in the 3rd, with the Sun outside the house. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Aries 16.77 deg |
| Mercury | Gemini 8.81 deg, 3rd house, Own sign; 3rd and 6th lord |
| Also in the 3rd | Jupiter, Gemini 27.25 deg |
| Sun | Taurus 21.10 deg, 2nd house |
| Venus, Ketu | Aries, 1st house |
| Moon; Mars; Saturn, Rahu | Leo, 5th; Virgo, 6th; Libra, 7th (Saturn exalted, retrograde) |
| House line | Favourable: phMercury3F |
| dashaQuality for Mercury | Good |
| Shad Bala (engine, of 20) | 14.04, Strong: position 7.5, aspect 1.5, natural 0.375, motion 1, direction 2.67, time 1 |
| Dasha | Venus to 4 December 2021, then the Sun to 2027 |
This is the rare 3rd-house Mercury the engine rates Strong. The Sun is in Taurus, 17.71 degrees away, so Mercury is not combust and keeps its position score. Mercury is 2nd from the Sun, which is Vesi by Mercury; the engine lists it within its Ubhayachari entry, with Venus 12th from the Sun. Jupiter, a benefic, joins Mercury: Ch. 14 Sl. 1's benefic in the 3rd is doubly met, and Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 17 reads Mercury with Jupiter as a noted dancer, scholar, singer and instrumentalist, wise and happy.
Mars is in Virgo, the 6th, and aspects the 9th, 12th and 1st, not the 3rd, so Saravali Ch. 34's friendship verse is not met. The 3rd lord is Mercury itself, in its own sign: Ch. 24 Sl. 27 and the sutras' strong-3rd-lord condition both apply. Against them stand Mercury's 6th lordship (Ch. 24 Sl. 63) and Ch. 34's malefic label for Aries. The Moon in Purva Phalguni, a Venus nakshatra, starts the chart in Venus's period. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm Mercury is in the third sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and note the combust flag and where the Sun is.
- Check Mercury's company: benefic company keeps it a benefic for Ch. 14 Sl. 1.
- Check whether Mars aspects the 3rd from the 9th, 12th or 8th, for Saravali Ch. 34.
- Find the 3rd lord and judge its strength, as the sutras ask.
- Read both Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Mercury rules.
- Look at the Drekkana for co-born, as BPHS Ch. 7 asks.
- Note where the Sun is: in the 2nd (Vesi by Mercury), the 3rd (beside Mercury, often combust) or the 4th (Vasi).
Method and limits are on the methodology page.
Over-readings
- "Mercury in the 3rd means a writer." Writing is on the Bhrigu Sutras' modern list for the house and on Saravali's list for Mercury; no verse for this placement names it, though Chamatkar Chintamani, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, gives a business career.
- "A benefic in the 3rd is wasted." BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 opens with a benefic joining the 3rd as its good condition.
- "Mercury in the 3rd gives many siblings." The sutra says a good number of brothers; the counting verses are not reproduced and the app computes no count.
- "The Sun's aspect on a 3rd-house Mercury harms friendships." The Sun cannot aspect it; only the Mars reading of Saravali Ch. 34 can apply.
- "Own-sign Mercury here is a pure good." For Aries rising it is also the 6th lord, and Ch. 34 calls it malefic; for Cancer rising, exalted, it is also the 12th lord.
- "Mercury in the 3rd makes a person timid." That is the app's testing line, used only when Mercury's dignity is weak; the verses give effort and skill.
- "The dasha will be hard because the 3rd is an Upachaya." Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 and the sub-period chapters disagree, and the specific verses add strength conditions.
Questions about Mercury in the 3rd
- Is Mercury good in the 3rd house?
- The verses are mostly favourable: hard-working, skilful, with co-born (Saravali, adding devoid of near and dear, cunning and fickle); a good number of brothers, happiness and wealth (Bhrigu Sutras). BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 reads a benefic in the 3rd well.
- Does Mercury in the 3rd affect siblings?
- The texts say so, conditionally: the sutras tie long-lived siblings to a strong 3rd lord. This app makes no prediction about anyone's siblings and computes no count.
- What does Saravali Ch. 34 say about Mercury in the 3rd?
- That with Mercury in the 3rd aspected by Mars the native's friends are destroyed. Some manuscripts read the Sun, but the Sun can never aspect a 3rd-house Mercury.
- What does Mercury aspect from the 3rd?
- Only the 9th house, by its 7th aspect.
- Why is my Mercury in the 3rd marked testing?
- Its dignity label is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Capricorn rising (debilitated) and Taurus rising (Cancer) never get the favourable line; others depend on where the sign's lord sits.
- Which rising signs make Mercury the 3rd lord in the 3rd?
- Aries (Mercury in Gemini) and Cancer (Mercury exalted in Virgo). BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 27 reads that as happiness through co-born.
- Is the 3rd a good house for a benefic?
- The texts are mixed: Upachayas suit malefics in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary, but BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 gives co-born and courage to a benefic in the 3rd, and Mercury's readings here are favourable.
- Is a Mercury dasha good with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 list planets in the 3rd as unfavourable, while the sub-period chapters list the 3rd as good with strength. The app grades the period by dignity.
