What the classical texts say about Jupiter in the 4th house: Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras on happiness and land, the malefic condition that reverses it, Gaja Kesari, Hamsa and Kahal Yoga, BPHS Ch. 15 on the dwelling, the Kendra blemish for Virgo rising, Jupiter as a lord in the 4th for every rising sign, and how this app grades it.

Jupiter in the 4th house is one of the placements Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras both read well: Saravali gives relatives, a conveyance, happiness, intelligence, pleasures and wealth; the Bhrigu Sutras give a happy, wise native of good conduct who holds land, and take the land and conveyance away, with the mother and good relations, if Jupiter is joined or aspected by a malefic. The app's line adds what the sutras' commentator also names: Gaja Kesari Yoga with the Moon.

The 4th is an angle, so the angle rules all apply: Hamsa, Jupiter's strength in a Kendra, and BPHS's caution about benefics that own angles. This page sets out the verses, the yogas, what Jupiter owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 4th house, Sukha Bhava.

Sources, and the mother

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 4th-house texts speak about the mother, property and ages at which conveyances arrive; this page reports conditions and makes no statement about a parent, a property or a date.

The great benefic in the house of happiness

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5 gives Bandhu Bhava conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, and lands and buildings. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 26-31 name it Sukha, happiness, and Griha, the house, among others. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 give Jupiter knowledge and happiness to govern. So happiness is on both lists, and the Bhrigu Sutras' modern list for the house (p. 14) adds academic education, which is the later tradition, not BPHS's list.

The 4th is a Kendra (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36), and the texts give a benefic in an angle a good deal. BPHS Ch. 10 Sl. 2: Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle from the Lagna destroys the evils of the preceding chapter. Ch. 12 Sl. 5-7: the Lagna lord, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle or trine makes one long lived, wealthy, intelligent and liked by the king. Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 18: Jupiter in an angle makes the middle of life happy. A Jupiter in the 4th meets all three by house alone.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 53

The verse in full: the native will be endowed with relatives, paraphernalia, conveyance, happiness, intelligence, pleasures and wealth, be great and be a source of misery to his enemies. No condition is stated. Three items (relatives, conveyance, happiness) are on BPHS's list for the house.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 19-23

The sutras (p. 77): happy, wise, of good conduct and highly intelligent; a landholder with abundant milk. If the 4th lord is strong, or with Venus or the Moon, or in benefic vargas, conveyances, many lands, horses and a spacious house. If Jupiter is aspected by or associated with a malefic: no land or conveyance, living in other people's houses, loss of the mother and bitterness with relations, reported here as the text's words. The commentator (p. 77) adds that Jupiter with the Moon in the 4th gives Gajakesari, "many relations, polite and generous", and names Hamsa for Sagittarius, Pisces and Cancer. Other Views (pp. 77-78): Brihat Jatak, happy; Phaldeepika, happiness from mother, friends, children, wife and agriculture; Chamatkar Chintamani, horses, religious ceremonies and enemies who act like servants, yet not contented. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The engine's lines, written from the same chapter: favourable, "real comfort, property and happiness - capable of forming Gajakesari Yoga with the Moon here, one of Jupiter's classically strong placements"; testing, "loss of property and strain with mother under real affliction".

The sutra's condition is the unusual part. For most planets in the 4th the Bhrigu reversal depends on the 4th lord ("No house can prosper unless its lord is well placed", the commentator writes under the Sun, p. 21); for Jupiter the 4th lord decides the upgrade, but the reversal depends on a malefic touching Jupiter itself, by conjunction or aspect. Malefics can aspect a 4th-house Jupiter from the 10th (any planet), from the 1st or 9th (Mars), and from the 2nd or 7th (Saturn).

Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 25-66 read the aspects on Jupiter by the sign it occupies, and Saturn's is the least steady: favourable on a Jupiter in Mercury's signs, in Cancer (a block the translation prints under "Gemini/Virgo") and in Saturn's own, mixed in Mars's and Venus's signs, unfavourable in Leo and in Jupiter's own signs. For a 4th-house Jupiter that sorts the Lagnas. A Saturn aspect is read well for Aries rising (Jupiter in Cancer) and for Gemini, Pisces, Scorpio and Libra rising, and badly for Virgo and Sagittarius rising (Jupiter in its own signs) and Taurus rising (Leo). So the two Lagnas where Jupiter owns the 4th are the two where Saravali reads a Saturn aspect on it worst, which agrees with the sutra's malefic condition.

The column reads like BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 applied planet by planet: benefics get the house's good things, malefics are denied them. Jupiter's sutra is the one that turns on any malefic, which makes it the planet whose reading the malefics in the same column most directly undo. The Sun, Mars and Saturn readings beside it are the readings for the companions that would reverse it.

Gaja Kesari, Kahal and Hamsa

Gaja Kesari: an angle and a benefic

The app's favourable line names Gaja Kesari, and its engine forms that yoga by BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4: Jupiter in an angle from the Lagna or the Moon, joined or aspected by a benefic, and not debilitated, combust or in an enemy's sign. Jupiter in the 4th is in an angle from the Lagna in every chart, so the first condition is met by house; the rest depends on sign and company - Venus, Mercury or the Moon in the 4th with Jupiter or in the 10th opposite it, and Jupiter outside Capricorn, combustion and an enemy's sign.

Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II adds two cautions: the simple form exists "for 9 days" every lunar month (p. 26), and the rapport is lost with Jupiter 6th or 8th from the Moon (p. 79), which here means the Moon in the 11th or the 9th house. Saravali has no Gaja Kesari, but its Ch. 33 Sl. 8-13 read Jupiter in the 10th from the Moon well, which for a 4th-house Jupiter is the Moon in the 7th.

Kahal Yog

BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10 form Kahal Yog when the 4th lord and Jupiter are in mutual angles with a strong Lagna lord, or when the 4th lord is in its own or exaltation sign joined to the 10th lord, and read it as energetic, adventurous, charming, with a complete army, lord over a few villages. A Jupiter in the 4th meets the first form when the 4th lord is in an angle from it, the 4th, 7th, 10th or 1st house. For Virgo and Sagittarius rising Jupiter is itself the 4th lord in the 4th, and the second form needs the 10th lord beside it. detectYogas has no Kahala rule.

Hamsa

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 form Hamsa for Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign in an angle. In the 4th that means Aries rising (Jupiter exalted in Cancer), Virgo rising (Sagittarius) and Sagittarius rising (Pisces). The app's trait line is "dignified and wise, drawn to meaning and comfort, generous in outlook", and the yogas calculator lists it.

Virgo and Sagittarius rising: Jupiter owns the 4th

For both Lagnas the 4th lord is Jupiter, in its own sign in the 4th. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 40 reads the 4th lord in the 4th as a minister with all kinds of wealth, skilful, virtuous, honourable, learned, happy and well disposed to his spouse. Ch. 15 Sl. 2 gives residential comforts in full degree when the 4th holds its own lord, or the Lagna lord, and is aspected by a benefic; the aspect is part of the rule. For Sagittarius rising Jupiter is both the 4th lord and the Lagna lord in the 4th.

BPHS Ch. 34 separates them. For Sagittarius Jupiter owns the 1st and 4th, the Lagna exempts it, and Ch. 34 calls it neutral (Sl. 37-38). For Virgo it owns the 4th and 7th, two angles and nothing else: Ch. 34 Sl. 31-32 call it malefic, Sl. 8-10 rank its angular blemish second only to Venus's, and this app listing Kendradhipathya Dosha for Virgo, graded mild, with the benefic nature muted, not reversed. A Virgo-rising Jupiter in the 4th therefore shows Hamsa, a favourable planet row and the blemish, all from one placement.

Sagittarius in the 4th carries a Moolatrikona question: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 and the engine give the first 10 degrees, the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction (p. 10) 5. And Ch. 15 Sl. 6, on the mother, asks for a benefic in the 4th, an exalted 4th lord and a strong significator of the mother together; this page names it and does not apply it.

Ch. 15 Sl. 5, on relatives, also fits these two Lagnas: Mercury in the Lagna, with a 4th lord that is itself a benefic and is aspected by another benefic, gives honour from one's relatives. Jupiter is the benefic 4th lord here. For Virgo rising Mercury in the Lagna is the Lagna lord in its own sign, and from there it cannot aspect the 4th; the "another benefic" must come from elsewhere, such as Venus or the Moon from the 10th. The sloka needs all three conditions, and this app does not test it.

What Jupiter owns, from each rising sign

Jupiter is in your 4th when it occupies the fourth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. In Ch. 24, for lords in the 4th, the 9th and 10th lords bring its good things, the 6th, 8th and 12th lords remove them.

Aries rising gives the only exalted 4th-house Jupiter, with Hamsa, as the 9th and 12th lord: Ch. 24 Sl. 100 (houses, conveyances) and Sl. 136 (steady losses in land and houses) pull opposite ways, and Ch. 34 calls Jupiter auspicious for Aries unless under a malefic's sway. Libra rising puts Jupiter in its fall as lord of the 3rd and 6th. Pisces rising carries the Lagna lord and 10th lord into the 4th, in Gemini, an enemy's sign by nature: Ch. 15 Sl. 4 gives fine houses when the 10th lord joins the 4th lord in an angle or trine, and here Jupiter is the 10th lord sitting in the sign of Mercury, the 4th lord, so Mercury beside it meets that sloka.

BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 37 gives a Raj Yoga when the 4th or 10th lord joins the 5th or 9th lord. Jupiter is the 9th lord in the 4th for Aries and Cancer rising and the 5th lord there for Leo and Scorpio, so the 4th lord beside it (the Moon, Venus, Mars or Saturn respectively) forms one. This app's Kendra-Kona check tests that kind of link.

Aspects, strength and the Ashtakavarga

From the 4th, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 4) returns [10, 8, 12]: the 10th by the 7th aspect, the 8th by the special 5th-place aspect, and the 12th by the special 9th-place aspect. The 10th is the other end of the 4th's axis; the 8th and 12th are dusthanas. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 19 adds Jupiter's aspect in full, and Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 say a house prospers when aspected by a benefic. The texts state no specific result for these three aspects.

Directional strength: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures Jupiter from the 7th, full at the Lagna, so the 4th is halfway and this engine gives 2 of 4. Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga marks the 4th place from a contributor good for five of eight, the Lagna among them, so a Jupiter in the 4th house receives the Lagna's point. There is a wrinkle: BPHS's list of good marks (Ch. 66 Sl. 53-55) names four for the 1st and 4th places, leaving Jupiter itself out, while its list of bad marks (Sl. 31-34) names three; the engine counts five, which that complement requires. The Ashtakavarga calculator and Shad Bala calculator show both.

BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11, among the Nabhash yogas, form Yav Yog with all benefics in the 4th and 10th, or all malefics in the 1st and 7th, and Vihag Yog with all planets in the 4th and 10th. A Jupiter in the 4th is one of the benefics Yav asks for there; Jupiter's own aspect falls on the 10th, the other house of the pair.

Sign and company

Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign: Cancer (Aries rising) rich in grain and wealth, charitable, famous; Sagittarius (Virgo rising) lasting wealth, a minister, fond of shrines; Pisces (Sagittarius rising) a headman in the king's service, firm, calm; Leo (Taurus rising) at home in hills, forts and temples; Scorpio (Leo rising) a builder of temples and towns, with diseases and difficulties; Virgo (Gemini rising) skilful, affluent; Libra (Cancer rising) very affluent, foremost among traders; Capricorn (Libra rising) want and service to others.

Company decides the sutra, and Saravali Ch. 15 reads each pair: with the Moon, firm in friendship, wealthy, virtuous, the first Gaja Kesari position; with the Sun, virtuous, a king's minister, though within 11 degrees the engine marks Jupiter combust; with Mars, intelligent, expert in speech; with Saturn, heroic, wealthy, head of an association; with Mercury, a scholar; with Venus, lives by learning and argument. The Sun, Mars and Saturn are malefics, so by the Bhrigu sutra each of them beside Jupiter in the 4th is the reversing case, whatever Saravali says of the pair.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Jupiter's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 4th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.

  • Always favourable: Aries (exalted), Virgo (Moolatrikona or own) and Sagittarius (own).
  • Never favourable: Libra (debilitated), and Gemini, Cancer, Aquarius and Pisces, Mercury's and Venus's signs, Neutral at best.
  • Favourable only with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Taurus, Leo and Capricorn (otherwise Neutral) and Scorpio (otherwise Enemy sign).

The row reads dignity, not the sutra's malefic condition. The 4th house card takes its tone from the 4th lord's dignity, which for Virgo and Sagittarius rising is Jupiter's own. dashaQuality() grades the period good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign. BPHS Ch. 7 assigns fortunes to the Chaturthamsa (D4) and conveyances to the Shodashamsa (D16), both computed here.

Timing

Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 list the 5th, 9th and 10th and Jupiter's strong signs for a favourable dasha, with acquisition of a kingdom, recognition, conveyances and happiness through wife and children among the results; the 4th is not on that house list, so its dignity decides. Sl. 49-51 give the reverse for a debilitated, combust or malefic-joined Jupiter, with the trouble at the start of the period. The sub-period chapters list a Kendra, the 4th included, among the good positions for a sub-period lord.

For Virgo and Sagittarius rising the period is also the 4th lord's, which BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 head "acquisition of house and land" and this app words as "gains in property, home comforts and vehicles". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and the 4th from the Moon is testing for every planet in the engine's rule, a different question from a natal Jupiter in the 4th from the Lagna.

Jupiter is at 10.65 degrees, just past the engine's 0-10 Moolatrikona band, so the label is Own sign and the position score 7.5 rather than 10; by the Bhrigu Sutras' 5-degree band it would be own sign anyway. Hamsa forms, the 4th lord is in the 4th (Ch. 24 Sl. 40), and the Moon beside Jupiter gives the engine's Gaja Kesari, the case the Bhrigu Sutras commentator names. Kendradhipathya is listed for every Virgo Lagna.

Two malefics bear on the sutra's condition. The Sun shares Sagittarius, 12.28 degrees from Jupiter, just outside the engine's 11-degree combustion orb, and Mars aspects the 4th from the 10th by its 7th aspect. By the sutra, either is the case that removes land and conveyance; the planet row reads favourable because it reads dignity only. The Sun and Moon are in the 4th too, so the Moon there is with the Sun, a different matter. The dasha runs Venus until October 2026. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Jupiter is in the fourth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Check for a malefic joining or aspecting Jupiter: the Bhrigu sutra's reversing condition.
  3. Look for a benefic in the 4th or 10th for Gaja Kesari, and the 4th lord's for Kahal.
  4. Read both Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Jupiter rules; for Virgo rising, read the Kendradhipathya entry as muted, not reversed.
  5. For Virgo and Sagittarius rising, check Ch. 15 Sl. 2's benefic aspect on the 4th.
  6. For the mother, read the Moon and the 4th from the Moon as well, as BPHS Ch. 32 asks.

How to weigh a yoga is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Jupiter in the 4th guarantees property." The sutra removes land and conveyance when a malefic joins or aspects Jupiter.
  • "Jupiter in the 4th means Gaja Kesari." Only with a benefic beside or opposite it and Jupiter well placed by sign; the app's line says "capable of".
  • "Hamsa in the 4th cancels the Kendra blemish." For Virgo rising the app lists both; they measure different things.
  • "Jupiter in the 4th says my mother is happy." BPHS reads the mother from three places and states multi-condition rules only.
  • "The 4th house shows education, so Jupiter here means a degree." Education in the 4th is the later list, not BPHS's.
  • "A favourable planet row means no affliction." The row reads dignity; the worked chart has a favourable row and a Mars aspect.

Questions about Jupiter in the 4th

Is Jupiter good in the 4th house?
The verses are favourable: relatives, conveyance, happiness and wealth (Saravali); happy, wise, a landholder (Bhrigu Sutras). The sutras remove land and conveyance, and add loss of the mother and bitterness with relations, when a malefic joins or aspects Jupiter.
Does Jupiter in the 4th form Gaja Kesari Yoga?
In this engine, when Venus, Mercury or the Moon is in the 4th with Jupiter or in the 10th aspecting it, and Jupiter is not debilitated, combust or in an enemy's sign - BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4's rule. The angle itself is given: the 4th is an angle from the Lagna.
Which rising signs get Hamsa Yoga from Jupiter in the 4th?
Aries (exalted in Cancer), Virgo (Sagittarius) and Sagittarius (Pisces).
What does Jupiter aspect from the 4th?
The 10th by its 7th aspect, the 8th by its 5th-place aspect and the 12th by its 9th-place aspect.
Why is my Jupiter in the 4th marked testing?
Its dignity label is not Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly. Libra rising (fall) and Gemini, Cancer, Aquarius and Pisces rising (enemy signs) never get the favourable line.
What is Kahal Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 9-10: the 4th lord and Jupiter in mutual angles with a strong Lagna lord, or the 4th lord in its own or exaltation sign joined to the 10th lord. The app does not compute it.
Is Jupiter in the 4th a problem for Virgo rising?
BPHS Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic for Virgo as owner of two angles, and the app lists a mild Kendradhipathya Dosha. The same placement forms Hamsa and gets the favourable row.
Does Saturn's aspect on Jupiter in the 4th matter?
By the Bhrigu sutra, any malefic aspect removes land and conveyance. Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 25-66 read Saturn's aspect on Jupiter well in Cancer, Mercury's signs and Saturn's own, mixed in Mars's and Venus's, and badly in Leo and Jupiter's own signs.
Is a Jupiter dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 favour Jupiter's strong signs and the 5th, 9th and 10th; the 4th is not on that list. The app grades the period by dignity.
