What the classical texts say about Jupiter in the 3rd house: Saravali's "ever successful, yet humiliated", the Bhrigu Sutras commentator's dissent, BPHS Ch. 14 on a benefic in the 3rd, Jupiter's aspects on the 7th, 9th and 11th, the Uttara Kalamrita and Bhavartha Ratnakara notes on its lordship, and how this app grades it.

Jupiter in the 3rd house is one of the four houses where Saravali is unkind to the great benefic: ever successful, yet greatly humiliated, vile, with weak digestion, defeated by women and sinful in acts. The Bhrigu Sutras themselves call the native very miserly but give him a good number of brothers, cleverness and determination, and their commentator rejects the harsher readings of Saravali and Phaldeepika unless Jupiter is afflicted. The app's own line, written from the sutras' chapter, goes further: supportive, long-lived siblings and real financial gains "through Jupiter's own aspects".

Those aspects are the key to this placement. From the 3rd Jupiter aspects the 7th, the 9th and the 11th, the house of gains among them. This page sets out the verses and the dissent, the aspects, the lordship notes the commentator quotes for Jupiter as 3rd lord, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava.

Sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. Statements about siblings are the texts', and the body clause is not medical advice.

A benefic in a house the tradition gives to malefics

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4 gives the 3rd valour, servants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction (Upadesh), journeys and the death of a parent; Ch. 32 Sl. 18-21 narrow siblings to younger ones and Sl. 31-34 make Mars the significator. The 3rd is an Upachaya, and the Bhrigu Sutras' Note on Mars in the 3rd (p. 49) says malefics there "are said to give benefic results".

Jupiter is the opposite case. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 say benefics increase the potency of houses except the 6th, 8th and 12th, and the 3rd is not among those; yet Saravali Ch. 30 is kind to Jupiter in exactly the eight houses outside the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th (Sl. 50-61). So Saravali's specific verse for the 3rd departs from its own general rule, and both natural benefics that usually help a house, Jupiter and Venus (Sl. 64), are lukewarm here in Saravali, without explanation.

Initiatory instruction, Upadesh, is the one item on Parashara's list for the 3rd that sits close to Jupiter, a minister and preceptor in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 14-15 and Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 17-18. The texts draw no connection between the two, and this page draws none.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 52

The verse in full: the native will be greatly humiliated, be vile, ever successful, will have digestive deficiencies, be defeated by women and be sinful in acts. No condition is stated. Success is the one positive word; the rest is the reverse of Jupiter's usual Saravali readings. "Miserly", often attached to this placement, is not in Saravali's verse; it comes from Brihat Jatak ("stingy") and the Bhrigu Sutras.

Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 13-18

The sutras (p. 76): very miserly, with a good number of brothers; very clever and determined; forsaking his relations; travels in the 38th year. A strong 3rd lord gives long-lived brothers; a 3rd lord with a malefic, loss of brothers and a native impatient, "an idiot and poor". The commentator calls the effects logical, says Jupiter as a natural benefic gives good results unless afflicted, and adds that from the 3rd it aspects the 7th, 9th and 11th, "thus giving a happy married life to the native and also financial gains".

The Bhrigu Sutras commentator's dissent

Other Views (pp. 76-77) are harsher. Brihat Jatak: stingy. Phaldeepika: sinful, malicious, miserly and humiliated, though his brother rises high. Chamatkar Chintamani: happiness from brothers but ungrateful and friendless, fortunate yet earning less than he wants. The Note: "Almost all are agreed that the native will be miser", but the commentator is "unable to agree to other evil effects attributed to Jupiter in the 3rd by Phaldeepika and Saravali. These can be realised when Jupiter is afflicted." Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The engine's lines, written from the sutras' Jupiter chapter: favourable, "supportive, long-lived siblings and real financial gains through Jupiter's own aspects"; testing, "a more frugal, withdrawn disposition". The testing line keeps the sutras' and Brihat Jatak's miserliness as "frugal", while the favourable line follows the commentator's aspect argument.

BPHS Ch. 14 Sloka 1

The 3rd house's chapter opens with the base rule that a benefic joining or aspecting the 3rd gives co-born and courage. Jupiter is a benefic in every company, so a Jupiter in the 3rd meets that rule by occupation alone. Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 add sibling happiness when Mars or the 3rd lord is in an angle, trine or exaltation; Jupiter enters that sloka only as the 3rd lord.

Gains through aspect: the 7th, 9th and 11th

From the 3rd, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 3) returns [9, 7, 11]: the 9th by the 7th aspect, the 7th by the special 5th-place aspect and the 11th by the special 9th-place aspect. The 11th is the house of gains and the 9th the house of fortune; both are houses Jupiter signifies in BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34. The engine's favourable line names gains through Jupiter's own aspects, the commentator's argument (p. 76), explaining the result by where Jupiter looks from the 3rd rather than by the house it sits in.

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 19 adds Jupiter's aspect (and Mercury's) in full where other benefics add a quarter. And BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 say a house prospers when joined or aspected by a benefic. From the 3rd, Jupiter joins one house and aspects three, two of them trines or gains, which is the arithmetic behind the engine's line. The texts attach no further specific result to these aspects beyond the commentator's marriage and gains.

The other half of the picture: in Saravali's and the sutras' readings for the 11th, almost every planet is favourable, and a Jupiter aspecting it from the 3rd is a benefic aspect on the house of gains. The 7th, the house of partnership, is the third aspected house, and in the engine Jupiter's aspect raises the aspect score of any planet there.

Argala adds a second structural role. BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9: a planet in the 11th from any house causes Argala, intervention, on it, and a planet in the 3rd from a house obstructs that Argala. The 3rd house is the 11th counted from the 5th, so a Jupiter in the 3rd causes Argala on the 5th, the house of children and of Jupiter's own karakatva. And it sits in the 3rd from the Lagna, so it obstructs any Argala that planets in the 11th cast on the Lagna. The Argala calculator shows both for your chart; Ch. 31 adds that an unobstructed Argala with aspect on the 3rd itself denotes happiness from co-born.

Condensed from Saravali Ch. 30 (saravali.txt 4618-4943) and the Bhrigu Sutras' 3rd-house sutras (pp. 19, 35, 48, 64, 76, 89, 101).

Jupiter's verse is the only one in Saravali's column with no courage, no co-born and no learning: the three things the house and the other planets' verses keep returning to. That is what makes the commentator's dissent notable. In the sutras Jupiter, Venus and Mercury all get "a good number of brothers", and Jupiter and Venus are both called very miserly, so the two benefics read alike there; a Jupiter aspecting a 3rd-house Mars, which Mars's sutra favours, would do it from the 7th, 9th or 11th, not from the 3rd itself.

Jupiter as the 3rd lord: Libra and Capricorn rising

Jupiter owns the 3rd for Libra (with the 6th) and Capricorn (with the 12th) rising, and in the 3rd it is in its own sign, Sagittarius or Pisces. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 27 reads the 3rd lord in the 3rd as happiness through co-born, wealth and children, a cheerful and very happy nature; Ch. 14 Sl. 2 adds good results when the 3rd lord occupies the 3rd together with Mars. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 and 39-40 call Jupiter malefic for both Lagnas: the 3rd and 6th, or the 12th and 3rd, are houses it reads poorly.

Not every source accepts that, and two dissents in the Bhrigu Sutras' commentary fall on exactly these two Lagnas, though both are made under other houses. Under Jupiter in the 7th (p. 81) it quotes Uttara Kalamrita that Jupiter owning the 3rd and 12th "will be productive of good", which is Capricorn rising; under Jupiter in the 10th (p. 84) it quotes Bhavartha Ratnakar that Jupiter gives yoga effects for Libra rising despite ruling the 3rd and 6th. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 21) takes the stricter line that Jupiter "is bad if he owns the 2nd, 3rd, the 6th, 8th and 12th". A Jupiter in its own sign in the 3rd for these Lagnas is therefore the case on which the sources' disagreement about Jupiter's lordship is most concentrated.

Sagittarius in the 3rd (Libra rising) also carries a Moolatrikona question: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 and this engine give the first 10 degrees, the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction (p. 10) only 5. The 12th lord in the 3rd (Capricorn) is read by Ch. 24 Sl. 135 as without happiness from siblings, the 6th lord (Libra) by Sl. 63 as at odds with co-born; the 3rd lord's own sloka, Sl. 27, says the opposite. Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale each by strength.

Taurus rising gives the only exalted Jupiter in the 3rd, in Cancer, as lord of the 8th and 11th: Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 make an 8th lord who also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th specifically harmful, and Sl. 23-24 list Jupiter as malefic and among the planets that "will inflict death" for Taurus. Sagittarius and Pisces rising carry the Lagna lord into the 3rd, which Ch. 24 Sl. 3 reads as valour "equal to a lion". Scorpio rising puts Jupiter in its fall as lord of the 2nd and 5th, a wealth house and a trine.

Three rows carry a trine lordship with a difficult one: Aries (the 9th with the 12th), Cancer (the 9th with the 6th) and Leo (the 5th with the 8th). Advanced Predictive Astrology softens its own strict rule on p. 119: a trine lord is "capable of mitigating the evil" of owning a malefic house, "Jupiter for Aries ... Jupiter for Cancer and Leo", and BPHS Ch. 34 calls Jupiter auspicious for all three. In the 3rd, all three rows put Jupiter in an enemy's sign by nature, Gemini, Virgo or Libra, so lordship and dignity point opposite ways for each of them.

Two rules about benefics in the Upachayas

Saravali's Dhana Yoga verse (Ch. 13 Sl. 32) counts benefics in the Upachayas (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th): all of them there gives much wealth, two moderate, one little, and "these can be deduced from the Moon also". A Jupiter in the 3rd always counts toward it. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 48 is a Raj Yoga for all benefics in angles with malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th; a Jupiter in the 3rd rules that one out. Ch. 39 Sl. 17 (a Raj Yoga: benefics in the 1st, 2nd and 4th with a malefic in the 3rd) and Ch. 43 Sl. 65 (long life: malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th with benefics in the angles) both want a malefic where Jupiter sits.

So the texts give a benefic in the 3rd opposite roles in different rules, as they do in the 11th, and do not set the rules side by side. The general point: a natural malefic sitting in the 3rd is treated kindly, a planet ruling it with suspicion (Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7), and the two statements describe different things.

Sign, company, the Moon and the Ashtakavarga

Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign: Cancer (Taurus rising) a scholar, charitable, famous; Sagittarius (Libra rising) a preceptor, lasting wealth; Pisces (Capricorn rising) knows the Vedas, calm in action; Leo (Gemini rising) strong, courageous, learned; Scorpio (Virgo rising) a commentator, a builder of temples, with diseases and difficulties; Gemini (Aries rising) affluent, eloquent, a poet; Capricorn (Scorpio rising) grief and want. Several sign readings give the courage or learning the house verse withholds; they make no reference to house.

Company, by Saravali Ch. 15: with Mars (Sl. 14), intelligent and expert in speech, which also puts the 3rd's significator beside Jupiter and meets Ch. 14 Sl. 2 when Jupiter is the 3rd lord; with the Sun (Sl. 5), a king's minister; with the Moon, firm in friendship, wealthy; with Mercury, a scholar; with Venus, lives by learning and argument; with Saturn, heroic, wealthy, head of an association. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 21-24 read Venus in the 3rd aspected by Jupiter as more happiness from co-born; Jupiter would have to be in the 7th, 9th or 11th for that, not beside Venus in the 3rd.

The engine's Gaja Kesari follows BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4: for a Jupiter in the 3rd, not an angle from the Lagna, the Moon in the 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th house and a benefic joining Jupiter or in the 9th to aspect it. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 79) says the rapport is lost with Jupiter 6th or 8th from the Moon, here the Moon in the 10th or the 8th. Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga (BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 53-55) marks the 3rd place from a contributor good for only three of the eight, the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn; the Lagna is not among them, so a Jupiter in the 3rd house does not receive the Lagna's point in its own table. The Ashtakavarga calculator returns the row.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Jupiter's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 3rd is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so the friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.

  • Always favourable: Taurus (exalted), Libra (Moolatrikona or own) and Capricorn (own).
  • Never favourable: Scorpio (debilitated), and Aries, Cancer, Leo and Pisces, Mercury's and Venus's signs, Neutral at best.
  • Favourable only with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Gemini, Virgo and Aquarius (otherwise Neutral) and Sagittarius (otherwise Enemy sign).

The three always-favourable Lagnas are three Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic for, and two of them are the ones the commentator's quoted authorities defend. Directional strength is two houses from the 1st, so 2.67 of 4 in this engine; the Shad Bala calculator shows each part. dashaQuality() grades the period good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign.

Timing

Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 make the dashas of planets placed in the 3rd, 6th or 11th unfavourable; the sub-period chapters list the 3rd with the angles, trines and 11th as a good placement, usually with a strength condition. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 name the 5th, 9th and 10th and Jupiter's strong signs for a favourable dasha, not the 3rd. Sl. 49-51 add that where Jupiter's period begins badly, the trouble belongs to its start.

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time results inside the period by decanate, early for a planet in the first ten degrees of its sign and late for the last ten, reversed when it was retrograde at birth. In this engine's positions Jupiter is retrograde on about 30 per cent of days, so the reversal applies to roughly three 3rd-house Jupiters in ten.

Inside other planets' periods the picture is similar. BPHS Ch. 54 reads Jupiter's sub-period in Mars's dasha as favourable with Jupiter in the 9th, 5th, an angle, the 11th or the 2nd, or in an exalted or own Navamsa. The 3rd is not on that list, so for a 3rd-house Jupiter the Navamsa clause and its company decide which reading applies.

For Libra and Capricorn rising the period is also the 3rd lord's, which this app words as "effort-heavy, generally more testing period for courage and sibling matters". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon: Jupiter in the 3rd from the Moon is "indifferent" and is also the engine's flagged intensified position for Jupiter, which Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 311, from a Tamil palm-leaf reading) lists among positions giving "intensified bad results".

Jupiter is the 3rd lord in the 3rd in its own sign, so Ch. 24 Sl. 27 and Ch. 14 Sl. 2 apply, and it is a benefic in the 3rd for Ch. 14 Sl. 1. From Pisces it aspects Virgo (the 9th, holding Saturn), Cancer (the 7th, holding a debilitated Mars) and Scorpio (the 11th, empty): the aspects the engine's line credits. Against that, Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic for Capricorn as owner of the 12th and 3rd; the commentator's Uttara Kalamrita citation says it does good regardless.

Saturn, the Lagna lord, aspects Jupiter from the 9th by its 7th aspect, a malefic aspect in the engine, and the commentator's dissent holds "unless Jupiter is afflicted". Whether one malefic aspect from the Lagna lord counts as affliction in his sense, the text does not say. The Moon is in the 4th, the 2nd from Jupiter, so no Gaja Kesari; Jupiter at 2.26 degrees is in the first decanate. The dasha opens in Venus, the Yoga Karaka for Capricorn. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Jupiter is in the third sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Ask whether Jupiter is afflicted, by a malefic beside it or aspecting it: that is the condition on which the commentator's dissent turns.
  3. List the three houses it aspects, the 7th, 9th and 11th, and what they hold.
  4. Read both Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Jupiter rules; for Libra and Capricorn rising, read the commentator's two lordship notes beside Ch. 34.
  5. Count the benefics in the Upachayas for Saravali's Dhana Yoga, from the Lagna and from the Moon.
  6. Check the Moon's house for Gaja Kesari.
  7. Look at the Bhratru Karaka in the Char Karakas calculator, the changing significator of siblings in BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 13-17, beside Mars, the fixed one.

The Drekkana (D3) reads co-born, as BPHS Ch. 7 asks; the Drekkana calculator builds it. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Jupiter in the 3rd brings humiliation." That is Saravali's line (and Phaldeepika's); the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator rejects it unless Jupiter is afflicted, while agreeing the native is miserly.
  • "A benefic is wasted in the 3rd." BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 opens with a benefic in the 3rd as its good condition, and Jupiter aspects the 7th, 9th and 11th from here.
  • "Jupiter as 3rd lord is always malefic." Ch. 34 says so; Uttara Kalamrita and Bhavartha Ratnakar, as the Bhrigu Sutras commentator quotes them under the 7th and 10th houses, disagree for Capricorn and Libra rising.
  • "Jupiter in the 3rd gives a Raj Yoga." Ch. 39 Sl. 48 needs benefics in angles and malefics in the 3rd; a Jupiter in the 3rd rules it out.
  • "The digestion clause is a health prediction." It is Saravali's compressed verse, reported as classical association, not medical advice.
  • "Jupiter's transit through the 3rd from the Moon is bad." The engine marks it indifferent and flags it as intensified, a prompt to be deliberate.

Questions about Jupiter in the 3rd

Is Jupiter bad in the 3rd house?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 52 reads it harshly: ever successful, yet humiliated, vile and sinful. The Bhrigu Sutras call the native very miserly but give many brothers; their commentator rejects Saravali's other evils unless Jupiter is afflicted, and the app's favourable line gives supportive siblings and gains through Jupiter's aspects.
What are the gains through Jupiter's aspects?
From the 3rd Jupiter aspects the 9th, 7th and 11th, the houses of fortune, partnership and gains. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator reads them as a happy married life and financial gains, and the engine's line credits those aspects.
Which rising signs make Jupiter the 3rd lord in the 3rd?
Libra (Jupiter in Sagittarius) and Capricorn (Jupiter in Pisces). BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 27 reads that as happiness through co-born; Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic for both.
What does Jupiter aspect from the 3rd?
The 9th by its 7th aspect, the 7th by its 5th-place aspect and the 11th by its 9th-place aspect.
Why is my Jupiter in the 3rd marked testing?
Its dignity label is not Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly. Scorpio rising (fall) and Aries, Cancer, Leo and Pisces rising (Mercury's and Venus's signs) never get the favourable line.
Does Jupiter in the 3rd affect siblings?
BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 gives co-born and courage to a benefic in the 3rd, and the app's favourable line names supportive siblings. The app makes no prediction about anyone's siblings.
Does Jupiter in the 3rd help wealth?
Saravali's Dhana Yoga counts benefics in the Upachayas, so a Jupiter in the 3rd counts toward it; the full grade needs other benefics there too.
Is a Jupiter dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 list planets in the 3rd as unfavourable; the sub-period chapters list the 3rd as good with strength. The app grades the period by dignity.
