What the classical texts say about the 10th house: what Karma Bhava signifies, why it is the strongest Kendra, the 22 slokas BPHS gives it, the 10th lord in all twelve houses, every planet in the 10th, Amala and Raja Yogas, timing, and how to check it in your own chart.

The 10th house is the one people ask about when the question is work. Its Sanskrit name is Karma, which means action or deed, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) uses that name throughout, spelt Karm. It is the tenth sign counted from your Lagna, and BPHS glosses it as the mid-heaven, the top of the chart.

This page sets out what the texts actually say about the house, sloka by sloka, and how this app computes it. The main source is BPHS, which gives the house its own chapter (Ch. 21) and twelve slokas on its lord (Ch. 24). Saravali has a chapter on the tenth house counted from the Moon, and the Bhrigu Sutras cover each planet placed in it. Where the sources disagree, the disagreement is shown. Where they are silent, so is this page. To follow along, open your chart in the birth chart calculator. You need a birth time, because houses do not exist without an Ascendant.

A note on kings

The classical texts were written for a world of courts. When they say a person 'will be a king' or 'honoured by the king', this page reports the wording and reads it, as the Bhrigu Sutras commentary does, as authority, rank and recognition from an employer, an institution or a government. None of it is a promise about your career.

What the 10th house signifies

BPHS defines the house in one sloka, Ch. 11 Sl. 11: 'Royalty (authority), place, profession (livelihood), honour, father, living in foreign lands and debts are to be understood from Karm Bhava.' Seven items, and only three of them are what the house is known for today. Father, foreign residence and debts are in Parashara's list and are missing from most modern descriptions.

Saravali's Rasi chapter (Sl. 26-27) gives the house two names, Karma and Mana, the second being a word for honour or standing. Its own chapter on the house (Ch. 33) adds a rule BPHS does not state there: 'The 10th House counted from the stronger among the Ascendant and the Moon is called Karmasthana' (Sl. 2). So Saravali asks you to judge work from whichever of the two is stronger, and most of that chapter is written from the Moon.

The Bhrigu Sutras commentary gives the long modern list: honour, dignity, public esteem, name and fame, power, prestige, credit for good work, success and status, rank, ambition and authority, worldly activities, responsibilities, permanency in service, promotion, appointment, profession, government and high office. It adds the last rites of one's parents and pilgrimage. Debts and foreign lands are not in it.

Father: the 9th or the 10th?

The sources do not agree with themselves here. BPHS Ch. 11 puts the father in the 10th, and Ch. 21 Sl. 2 opens with 'paternal happiness' from the 10th lord. But Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 says 'the 9th from Surya denotes father', and the chapter on the 9th house (Ch. 20) is largely about the father too; its Sl. 7 uses both houses at once, making the father 'very rich and famous' when the 9th lord sits in the 10th and the 10th lord is aspected by a benefic. The honest reading is that Parashara consults both. This app's house cards follow the common modern split and keep the 10th for career.

A Kendra, an Upachaya, and the place of full strength

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 sorts the twelve houses into groups, and the 10th falls into two. It is a Kendra, an angle, with the Lagna, the 4th and the 7th. And it is an Upachaya, with the 3rd, 6th and 11th. The passage names the Upachaya group and says nothing about what follows from it, so this page records the label and draws no conclusion.

The Kendra label has consequences, and BPHS singles the 10th out among the four. Three passages do it:

  • Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says that within each group of houses 'the significance will be in the ascending order'. Among the Kendras the 10th comes last, so its lordship counts for most. The same passage says the 7th and 10th are 'specially for happiness', as the 5th and 9th are for wealth.
  • Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 says planets in mutual angles in own, exalted or friendly signs become Yog Karakas, mutual co-workers, and adds: 'In Karm Bhava a Grah will be significantly so.'
  • Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16, on judging any house, lists the conditions under which a house does well. One is that its lord is 'in Karm Bhava'. So any house lord placed in the 10th supports the house it rules, which is the principle behind the table of lords further down.

Positional and directional strength

Dig Bal, the directional component of Shad Bala, is where the 10th is distinctive. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7-7 1/2 measures the Sun and Mars from the 4th house, the nadir, so their directional strength is zero there and full at the opposite point, the 10th. The Moon and Venus are measured from the 10th itself: zero here, full in the 4th. Jupiter and Mercury are full at the Lagna, Saturn in the 7th. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary applies this directly: 'The Sun is considered powerful in the 10th house as he gets directional strength in this house', and the same for Mars.

This is a measure of strength, not of meaning. The Moon and Venus have their least directional strength in the 10th, and yet the Bhrigu Sutras read both there as excellent. A planet can be well placed by signification and weakly placed by direction at once.

Which planet rules your 10th house

The 10th lord is the ruler of the tenth sign from the Lagna, so it is fixed for each Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign if you do not know it. The fourth column is the same planet's other house, which BPHS Ch. 34 makes decisive.

BPHS Ch. 34 gives the rules for reading this table. Sl. 2-7: 'Benefics, owning Kendras, will not give benefic effects, while malefics, owning Kendras, will not remain inauspicious.' Sl. 8-10 ranks the benefics by how strongly this applies, in ascending order: Moon, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus. Sl. 14 then narrows the good news for malefics: a malefic owning a Kendra becomes auspicious 'only when it simultaneously Lords over a Kon and not by merely owning a Kendr'. Sl. 13 states the positive case: one planet owning both a Kendra and a Kona 'will prove specially a Yog Karak'.

Apply that to the table. Saturn for Taurus, Mars for Cancer and Venus for Capricorn each own the 10th and a trine, and Parashara confirms all three by name in the same chapter: for Taurus 'Sani will cause Raj Yog' (Sl. 23-24), for Cancer 'Mangal is capable of conferring a full-fledged Yog' (Sl. 27-28), and for Capricorn 'only Sukr is capable of causing a superior Yog' (Sl. 39-40). Where the 10th lord has no trine of its own, the text pairs it with the planet that does. For Libra 'Candr and Budh will cause Raj Yog' (10th and 9th lords), for Scorpio the Sun and Moon (10th and 9th), for Sagittarius the Sun and Mercury (9th and 10th), for Pisces Mars and Jupiter (9th and 10th).

Two cautions sit in the same slokas. For Aries, 'the mere Yuti of Sani with Guru will not produce auspicious effects', although they own a Kendra and a Kona: Saturn's other house is the 11th, and Sl. 15 says a Kendra or Kona lord that also owns an evil house 'does not cause a Raj Yog by mere relations'. For Leo, the conjunction of Jupiter with Venus, the 10th lord, likewise 'will not produce auspicious results'; Venus also owns the 3rd.

How BPHS judges the 10th house (Ch. 21)

Ch. 21 has twenty-two slokas. Its recurring words are 'deeds' and 'acts': the chapter is about whether a person's work is good, bad, obstructed or absent, and about fame. It names no professions. What follows is its structure.

  • Sl. 2, the opening rule. If the 10th lord is strong and exalted, or in its own sign or own Navamsa, the person 'will derive extreme paternal happiness, will enjoy fame and will perform good deeds'.
  • Sl. 3. If the 10th lord is 'devoid of strength', the person 'will face obstructions in his work'.
  • Sl. 4. The 10th lord with a benefic, or in an auspicious house, gives steady gain 'through royal patronage and in business'. In the contrary situation, the opposite.
  • Sl. 5-7 and 17, bad deeds. Malefics in both the 10th and the 11th; the 10th lord in the 8th with Rahu; an exchange between the 8th and 10th lords with a malefic involved. These slokas pass verdicts on character, which this page does not repeat.
  • Sl. 8-10, honour and a happy life. The 10th lord exalted and with Jupiter while the 9th lord is in the 10th: 'honour, wealth and valour'. The 11th lord in the 10th with the 10th lord in the Lagna, or the 10th and 11th lords together in an angle: a happy life.
  • Sl. 11, 16 and 18, work stopping. Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars together in the 11th: 'cessation of his duties'. Saturn in the 10th with a debilitated planet while a malefic holds the 10th of the Navamsa chart: 'bereft of acts'. The 10th lord in its fall with malefics in the 10th and in the 10th from it: obstructions.
  • Sl. 14-15, good deeds. The 10th lord exalted in an angle or trine and joined or aspected by Jupiter; or the 10th lord in the Lagna with the Lagna lord while the Moon is in an angle or trine.
  • Sl. 19-21, three combinations for fame, each a triangle of the Moon, the 10th lord and the Lagna or 11th lord: the Moon in the 10th with the 10th lord in a trine from the 10th and the Lagna lord in an angle; the 11th lord in the 10th with a strong 10th lord aspecting Jupiter; the 10th lord in the 9th with the Lagna lord in the 10th and the Moon in the 5th.

The method is stated in the last sloka. Parashara calls his account brief and says other effects should be worked out 'based on the relationship of the Lords of Lagn and of Karm Bhava'. That is the chapter's real instruction: the 10th house is read as a relationship between two planets, the Lagna lord and the 10th lord. Sl. 16 also shows him checking the 10th house of the Navamsa alongside the birth chart.

The 10th lord in each of the twelve houses

BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 109-120 gives one sloka for the 10th lord in each house. The table paraphrases them.

10th lord inSlokaWhat BPHS says (paraphrased)
1stSl. 109Scholarly, famous, a poet; ill health in boyhood and happy later; wealth that grows day by day
2ndSl. 110Wealthy, virtuous, honoured by the king, charitable; happiness from the father
3rdSl. 111Happiness from siblings and those who serve him; valorous, eloquent, truthful
4thSl. 112Happy, attentive to the mother, owns conveyances, land and houses; wealthy
5thSl. 113All kinds of learning, always delighted, wealthy, with children
6thSl. 114Short of paternal happiness; skilful, yet short of wealth and troubled by opponents
7thSl. 115Happiness through the spouse; intelligent, eloquent, truthful, religious
8thSl. 116'Devoid of acts', long-lived, inclined to blame others
9thSl. 117One of royal birth becomes a king, an ordinary person equal to one; wealth and happiness from children
10thSl. 118Skilful in all jobs, valorous, truthful, devoted to elders
11thSl. 119Wealth, happiness and children; virtuous, truthful, always delighted
12thSl. 120Spends through royal abodes, fears opponents, and worries in spite of being skilful
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 109-120, the lord of Karm Bhava in each house.

Nine of the twelve are plainly good, and the three that are not are the Dusthanas: the 6th, 8th and 12th. Even there the wording is careful. In the 6th and the 12th the person is still called skilful; what is lost is the reward, not the ability. Only the 8th takes the house's own subject away, with 'devoid of acts'. The best sloka is the 9th, where a Kendra lord sits in a Kona and forms by itself the link Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 describes.

Every other house lord placed in the 10th

The same chapter gives the reverse case: each other lord sitting in the 10th. Clauses about wives, and words that brand the person, are left out; they are verdicts on character, not readings of a chart.

Lord ofSlokaIn the 10th house (paraphrased)
1stSl. 10Paternal happiness, royal honour, fame among men and, without doubt, self-earned wealth
2ndSl. 22Honourable, learned and wealthy, but short of happiness from children
3rdSl. 34All kinds of happiness and self-made wealth
4thSl. 46Royal honours, pleasures, and mastery over the senses
5thSl. 58A Raj Yog, various pleasures, and great fame
6thSl. 70Well known among his own people, happy in foreign countries, a gifted speaker; not respectful to the father
7thSl. 82Religious, with wealth and children
8thSl. 94Short of paternal happiness and of livelihood, but with a benefic aspect these evils will not mature
9thSl. 106A king or equal to one, or a minister or army chief; virtuous and dear to all
11thSl. 130Honoured by the king, virtuous, intelligent, truthful, self-controlled
12thSl. 142Expenditure through royal persons; only moderate paternal happiness
BPHS Ch. 24, each bhava lord placed in Karm Bhava.

This is Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 at work: the 10th lifts whatever arrives in it. The two trine lords give the strongest results, a Raj Yog for the 5th lord and kingship for the 9th. The Lagna lord's sloka contains the phrase people most want to hear, self-earned wealth. Even the 6th lord yields reputation and success abroad, which matches Parashara's 'living in foreign lands' in Ch. 11. Only the 8th and 12th lords harm the house, and the 8th lord's harm is cancelled by a benefic aspect.

Planets in the 10th house

For planets occupying the house, the fullest source in this corpus is the Bhrigu Sutras. Its pattern is unusually uniform: almost every planet is read well here, and almost every sutra adds the same condition, that a malefic's company turns the result into obstruction. Ages given in the text are omitted.

PlanetBhrigu Sutras readingThe stated condition
Sun (Sutras 88-95)Distinction in education, fame, capabilityExalted or in Leo: powerful and famous for his achievements, builds public works. In a malefic sign or with a malefic: obstructions in the career
Moon (54-60)High academic attainment, brilliance, pious deeds, fame, kindnessA strong 10th lord makes him highly virtuous. With or aspected by a malefic: obstacles in all spheres
Mars (75-85)Acclaimed by the people, fortunate and prosperousWith a benefic: success, fame, respect. With the 9th or 10th lord: installed as king or heir. With a malefic: obstruction
Mercury (67-70)Success through virtuous deeds, patience, wide reputation, a great thinkerOwn sign, exalted or with Jupiter: many religious works. In an enemy sign or with a malefic: the reverse
Jupiter (46-49)Righteous deeds, great ability, wide reputation, respected by the massesIf the 10th lord is with a malefic or in a malefic sign: career obstacles and financial strain
Venus (59-61)'Full of glory'With Mercury, Jupiter and the Moon: conveyances, world-wide reputation, many Raja Yogas. With a malefic: obstacles in undertakings
Saturn (44-45)Stingy; little else is promisedWith a benefic: successful in undertakings. With a malefic: obstacles in the career
Rahu or Ketu (25-28)A poor reading of conduct and surroundings; an interest in poetryWith a benefic: lives in good places
Bhrigu Sutras on each graha in the 10th house.

Saturn is where the sutras and their commentator part ways. The sutras give Saturn almost nothing; the commentator writes that the author 'does not consider Saturn in the 10th as favourable' and disagrees, listing cases where Saturn sits there in its own or exalted sign as lord of a good house, for example as 9th and 10th lord for Taurus Ascendant. His method throughout is the one from Ch. 34: ask what the planet owns. A planet in its own sign in the 10th is the 10th lord in the 10th; Mars in the 10th for Leo or Pisces Ascendant is the 9th lord in the 10th.

Saravali: the tenth from the Moon

Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 8-13 reads each planet in the tenth sign from the Moon sign. The Sun there: success in undertakings, wealth, strength, good health. Mercury: learned, rich, famous, intelligent, skilled in many arts. Jupiter: achieves his desires, righteous, affluent, a king's minister. Venus: fortunate, famous, successful, honoured by the king. Mars: valorous deeds and life in foreign places, with harsh words about conduct. Saturn alone is read badly: poverty, grief and ill health (a classical association, not medical advice). So Saravali and the Bhrigu sutras agree that Saturn is the difficult occupant, and the commentator's defence of Saturn is the later view. Sl. 3-6 add that results depend on the nature of the sign in the 10th.

Each placement has its own page: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in the 10th house.

Named combinations that involve the 10th house

Many named yogas are built on this house or its lord. The yoga calculator checks your chart for the ones this app detects, and what a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one.

  • Amal Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6). 'If there be exclusively a benefic in the 10th from Lagn, or Candr.' The result is fame 'lasting till Candr and stars exist', honour, charity and virtue. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary cites it for Mercury and Jupiter in the 10th.
  • The Kendra-Kona yoga (BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12). An exchange, a conjunction in a Kendra or Kona, or a full mutual aspect between a Kendra lord and a Kona lord; the person 'will become a king and be famous'. The 9th and 10th lords are the strongest such pair, and that pair has its own name, Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga.
  • Raj Yog from the 10th lord alone (BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 21). The 10th lord in its own house or its exaltation sign, aspecting the Lagna. Sl. 35 adds an exchange between the 4th and 10th lords, both aspecting the 5th and 9th lords.
  • Royal association (BPHS Ch. 40). Sl. 1: the 10th lord joined or aspected by the Amatya Karaka or its dispositor makes 'a chief in the king's court'. Sl. 13: an exchange of signs between the 10th lord and the Lagna lord.
  • Other yogas in Ch. 36 use the 10th lord as a component: Kahal (Sl. 9-10), Shankh (Sl. 13-14), Shrinath (Sl. 18: the 7th lord in the 10th with the 10th lord exalted and joined to the 9th lord) and Sharad (Sl. 19-20: the 10th lord in the 5th).
  • Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas. Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in own or exalted sign in a Kendra. The 10th is one of the four houses where this can form, and the Bhrigu Sutras commentary names Bhadra and Hamsa Yoga for Mercury and Jupiter there.

How this app computes and reads your 10th house

  • Houses are whole-sign. The sign holding your Ascendant degree is the whole 1st house, and the tenth sign from it is the whole 10th. The app does not use the astronomical mid-heaven degree as a house cusp. The methodology page explains how positions are calculated.
  • The house card is titled 'Career & status' with the short line 'public standing, authority', and its type is shown as Kendra. The engine tests Kendra first, so the Upachaya label does not appear.
  • The tone of the card (favourable, neutral or testing) comes from one thing: the dignity score of the 10th lord in the sign it occupies. That is BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 2-3 in miniature, a strong lord against one 'devoid of strength', but it does not weigh the lord's house or companions, which Sl. 4 also asks for. Read the Ch. 24 sloka for your placement alongside it.
  • Directional strength follows the same peak houses as BPHS: the Sun and Mars score full Dig Bala in the 10th. The engine works in whole houses, falling off evenly to zero at the opposite house, where BPHS measures in degrees; that simplification is the app's own. The Shad Bala calculator shows the figure for every planet.
  • Planet-in-house lines come from the Bhrigu Sutras table. A planet in the 10th gets its favourable line when it is exalted, in Moolatrikona, in its own sign or in a friendly sign, and its cautionary line otherwise. The favourable lines mirror the source: for the Moon, 'real achievement, virtue and public recognition in career'; for Saturn, the commentator's view, 'lasting career authority earned through sustained effort'. Saturn's cautionary line is 'a career that advances only slowly, testing real patience'.
  • Amala Yoga is detected when a natural benefic other than the Moon sits in the 10th from the Lagna or from the Moon and no malefic joins or aspects it. That is stricter than the BPHS wording, which asks only that the occupant be exclusively benefic. The app reads it as 'lasting, well-earned reputation - recognition that builds steadily rather than fading'.
  • Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga is detected only when the 9th and 10th lords occupy the same house and that house is a Kendra or a trine. A separate Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga check accepts a conjunction or a mutual aspect between any Kendra lord and any Kona lord; a one-way aspect is not counted, because that test fired on almost every chart.
  • Yoga Karakas are listed from the BPHS Ch. 34 table for your Lagna, so Taurus shows Saturn, Cancer Mars, Capricorn and Aquarius Venus, and Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces show the pairs named above.

Three further calculators bear on this house. The Dashamsa (D10) calculator builds the divisional chart that BPHS assigns to 'power (and position)', a second and independent look at career. The Argala calculator shows which planets intervene on each house; BPHS Ch. 31 gives 'royal honour' for an unobstructed benefic Argala bearing on the 10th. And the career and money calculator combines four signifiers, weighted in this order: the 10th lord, planets in the 10th, the lord of the D10 Ascendant, and the Amatya Karaka from the Char Karakas. It is described under career and money features; the whole chart reading sits under Kundali features, and you can question any line of it in the AI chat.

Timing: when the 10th house becomes active

A house matters most when a planet connected with it is running its period. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator shows which Mahadasha and Antardasha you are in, and what a Mahadasha is explains the system.

BPHS opens its chapter on the dashas of house lords with this house. Ch. 48 Sl. 1: 'If the Lord of Karm is placed in an auspicious Bhava in his exaltation Rasi etc., his Dasha effects will be favourable. The effects will be adverse, if the Lord of Karm is in his debilitation Rasi and occupies an inauspicious Bhava.' Parashara uses the 10th lord as his worked example of the general rule that dignity and house together decide a period. Sl. 5-8 then give the headline for the 10th lord's dasha: 'recognition from and awards by the Government'. This app's text for the period is 'career recognition and advancement, often with public or institutional backing'.

Sl. 14-17 1/2 add the strongest statement: 'There will be acquisition of a kingdom in the Dashas of Lagn's Lord and Karm's Lord, if Karm's Lord is in Lagn and Lagn's Lord is in Karm.' The same slokas say the dasha of any planet joined to, or aspected by, a Kendra or trine lord is favourable, so a planet sitting with your 10th lord shares in it. Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 gives an example for the Sun Mahadasha: wealth and 'honours from the Government' if the Sun is associated with the 9th or 10th lord. The app marks a Mahadasha lord favourable on dignity and house, and never when the lord sits in a Dusthana. Sub-periods are covered in Antardasha and Pratyantar.

One alternative dasha system is tied to this house by definition. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 35-36: 'Chaturashiti-sama Dasha is considered appropriate in cases, where the Karm's Lord is placed in Karm.' It has seven lords of twelve years each. The alternate dashas calculator reports whether your chart meets that condition.

Transits in this tradition are counted from the natal Moon, so the relevant sign is the tenth from your Moon sign, Saravali's Karmasthana when the Moon is the stronger. The Gochar calculator marks Jupiter, Mercury and Venus as favourable when they pass through it, with the note 'happiness, recognition or real financial ease', and marks Saturn there as unremarkable. The timing features bring dasha and transit together.

Common misreadings

  • 'The 10th house tells you your profession.' BPHS Ch. 21 names no professions. It judges whether work prospers, is obstructed or stops, and whether fame follows. Saravali Ch. 33 ties livelihood to the sign and occupants of the 10th, and to the stronger of the Lagna and Moon, not to one fixed rule.
  • 'An empty 10th house means no career.' Ch. 21 opens with the 10th lord, not with occupants, and most of its slokas never mention a planet in the house. An empty 10th is read through its lord.
  • 'A benefic ruling the 10th is always good.' Ch. 34 Sl. 2-10 says benefics owning Kendras 'will not give benefic effects', most strongly for Venus and Jupiter. The lordship is neutralising, not harmful, and it is overridden when the planet also owns a trine or the Lagna.
  • 'Saturn in the 10th ruins a career' and 'Saturn in the 10th guarantees one.' The sutras give Saturn little there and Saravali reads it badly from the Moon; the commentator reads it very well in its own or exalted sign. Both hinge on dignity and lordship.
  • 'The 10th house is the mid-heaven degree.' BPHS glosses the house as the mid-heaven, but this app uses whole signs: the entire tenth sign is the house.

Check it in your own chart

  1. Generate your chart in the birth chart calculator with an accurate birth time. If you do not have one, read what to do when the birth time is unknown first; you can still read the tenth from the Moon, as Saravali does.
  2. Find the sign in your 10th house and its lord, using the table above. Note the lord's second house: a trine or the Lagna strengthens it; the 3rd or 11th weakens any yoga it joins (Ch. 34 Sl. 15).
  3. See which house the 10th lord occupies and read the matching sloka from Ch. 24 Sl. 109-120. Then check its sign: exalted, own sign or own Navamsa is the condition of Ch. 21 Sl. 2, and the fall is that of Sl. 18.
  4. Compare it with the Lagna lord, as Ch. 21 Sl. 22 instructs. Are the two together, in exchange, or in each other's angles?
  5. Read any planets in the 10th with their stated conditions, then note which house each one rules.
  6. Open the yoga calculator for Amala, Dharma-Karmadhipati, Kendra-Kona and Mahapurusha yogas, and the D10 for the second opinion.
  7. Finally, look at timing: is the 10th lord, or a planet joined to it, running its period in the Vimshottari Dasha?

Questions people ask

What does the 10th house represent in Vedic astrology?
In BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 it indicates authority, place, profession or livelihood, honour, father, living in foreign lands and debts. Saravali names it Karma and Mana. Later lists add status, promotion, government and public esteem. This app titles the house 'Career & status'.
What if there are no planets in my 10th house?
Then the house is read through its lord, which is how BPHS reads it anyway. Ch. 21 opens with the 10th lord's strength and dignity, and Ch. 24 gives a result for the lord in every house. Planets in the tenth sign from your Moon also count, according to Saravali Ch. 33.
Which planets are best in the 10th house?
The Bhrigu Sutras read the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus well there, each on condition that no malefic joins it. The Sun and Mars also gain full directional strength in the 10th (BPHS Ch. 27). Saturn is disputed: weak in the sutras and in Saravali, strong in the commentary when in its own or exalted sign.
What is Amala Yoga?
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6 defines it as exclusively a benefic in the 10th from the Lagna or the Moon, and gives lasting fame, honour and virtue. This app detects it when a natural benefic other than the Moon occupies either position with no malefic joining or aspecting it.
Can the 10th house tell me which career to choose?
Not by itself, and the primary source does not try. BPHS judges whether work prospers; Saravali says livelihood follows the nature of the sign and planets in the 10th. This app's career reading combines the 10th lord, the occupants, the D10 Ascendant lord and the Amatya Karaka and shows which planet each line comes from, so you can check the reasoning.
What happens in the Mahadasha of the 10th lord?
BPHS Ch. 48 gives 'recognition from and awards by the Government', favourable if the lord is well dignified in a good house and adverse if it is debilitated in a bad one. If the 10th lord and Lagna lord have exchanged houses, the text gives its strongest result. This app shows 'career recognition and advancement' and grades the period by the lord's dignity and house.
