The Bhrigu Sutras read almost every planet well in the 10th, and Saturn is the exception: a bath in the Ganges, stinginess, and little else is promised. Then the sutras' own commentator disagrees with his author and lists cases where Saturn in the 10th is good, starting with Taurus rising. Saravali, for its part, gives Saturn in the 10th one of its warmest house verses: wealthy, learned, a minister, a judge or the leader of a town. And this app's own favourable line calls the placement classically one of the best for Saturn. Three sources, three positions, and the commentator in the middle of them.
This page sets those positions out and follows the placement through the engine. It describes rules, not a career. For the planet, see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 10th house, Karma Bhava.
A note on sources
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. BPHS Ch. 21 names no professions, and neither does this page.
The house: authority, livelihood and standing
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 list the 10th as authority, place, profession or livelihood, honour, the father, living in foreign lands and debts. Saravali Ch. 3 names it Karma and Mana, work and standing, and Ch. 33 Sl. 2 read it from the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make it a Kendra and an Upachaya. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 rank its lordship highest among the angles, Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 say a planet in the 10th is "significantly" a Yoga Karaka when in mutual angles in dignity, and Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 count a house lord placed in the 10th as one of the conditions under which any house prospers.
Two of the 10th's classifications favour Saturn. It is an Upachaya, a growing house where malefics are read kindly, and an angle, where Saturn in its own sign or exaltation forms Sasa Yoga. Its directional strength cuts the other way: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measure Saturn from the Lagna, full in the 7th and nil in the 1st, and the 10th is halfway, worth 2 of 4 in the engine.
Three readings, and the commentator
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 83
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 83 (p. 105): "wealthy, learned, valorous and be a minister, or a justice, or be the leader of a group, city, or village". The 10th is the house where Saravali reads Saturn best. It carries no condition.
Saravali Ch. 33: the tenth from the Moon
Saravali's own chapter on the 10th reads each planet in the 10th sign from the Moon, and Saturn alone is read badly there (Ch. 33 Sl. 8-13, p. 120): physical disease, poverty, grief, no children, a classical association and not medical advice. So Saravali gives Saturn in the 10th two opposite verdicts, depending on whether the house is counted from the Lagna (Ch. 30) or from the Moon (Ch. 33). Ch. 33 Sl. 2 say the Karmasthana is counted from whichever of the two is stronger, and Sl. 3-6 add that results depend on the nature of the sign in the 10th.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 44-45, and the commentator
Sutras 44-45 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 106, corpus line 4227): a bath in the Ganges at an age the text gives, stingy and of bilious constitution; obstacles in the career with a malefic, success in undertakings with a benefic. The commentator (pp. 106-107) objects that the author does not consider Saturn in the 10th favourable, and lists the cases where it is: Aries and Taurus rising, own sign as 10th and 11th or 9th and 10th lord, "a very powerful Rajayoga"; Libra rising, a powerful Dhana yoga; Capricorn rising, exalted Lagna lord, "as powerful ... as a Raja yoga"; Aquarius rising, a favourable Lagna lord. His method fits a phrase: ask what the planet owns. Of the authorities quoted (p. 107), Brihat Jatak, Phaldeepika and Saravali read it well, Chamatkar Chintamani hard, and the Note limits the good results to a Saturn that is a functional benefic.
Saravali's Ch. 33 and the Bhrigu sutras agree that Saturn is the difficult occupant of the 10th, and the commentator's defence of Saturn is the later view. Saravali's Ch. 30 house verse sides with the commentator. This page does not choose among them.
This app wrote its lines from the Bhrigu chapter and followed the commentator. Favourable: "lasting career authority earned through sustained effort - capable of forming Sasa Yoga and genuine Raja Yoga here, classically one of the best placements for Saturn". Testing: "a career that advances only slowly, testing real patience". The favourable line is the commentator's view, not the sutra's.

BPHS Ch. 21 and the 10th lord
BPHS Ch. 21, the house's own chapter, is about whether a person's deeds are good, bad, obstructed or absent, and about fame. It judges mainly through the 10th lord. Sl. 2: a strong 10th lord, exalted or in its own sign or Navamsa, gives paternal happiness, fame and good deeds. Sl. 3: a 10th lord devoid of strength brings obstructions. Sl. 4: the 10th lord with a benefic or in an auspicious house gives steady gain through patronage and business. The last sloka names the method: read the relationship of the Lagna lord and the 10th lord.
Saturn is named once among the obstruction verses. Sl. 16: Saturn in the 10th with a debilitated planet while a malefic holds the 10th of the Navamsa chart, "bereft of acts". Three conditions, one of them in a divisional chart. Sl. 16 shows Parashara checking the 10th of the Navamsa alongside the birth chart. A Saturn alone in the 10th meets one of the three.
Sasa Yoga in the 10th
BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Sasa when Saturn is in its own sign or exaltation in an angle. In the 10th that means Aries rising (Saturn in Capricorn), Taurus rising (Saturn in Aquarius) and Capricorn rising (Saturn exalted in Libra). In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 9,858 had Saturn in the 10th and Sasa formed in 23.4 per cent. The Yogas calculator reports it, and the Bhrigu commentator (p. 107) names Sasa for Saturn in its own or exaltation sign in the 10th.
Each of the three Sasa Lagnas carries a different lordship. For Aries rising Saturn rules the 10th and 11th, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22 say that "the mere Yuti of Sani with Guru will not produce auspicious effects" there, because Saturn's other house is the 11th; Ch. 34 Sl. 15 say a Kendra or Kona lord that also owns an evil house does not cause a Raj Yog by mere relations. For Taurus rising Saturn rules the 9th and 10th, and "Sani will cause Raj Yog". For Capricorn rising Saturn is the Lagna lord, exalted in the 10th.
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 29-30 add Kusuma Yoga: a fixed Lagna with Saturn in the 10th, Venus in an angle and the Moon in a trine with a benefic. A Saturn in the 10th supplies one condition for Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius rising. The engine does not check for it.
Your rising sign: Saturn's sign and the houses it rules
With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 10th is in the tenth sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 10th, and they read as Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 at work: the 10th lifts whatever arrives in it.
| Ascendant | Saturn in | Natural dignity | Saturn rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 10th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Capricorn | Own sign | 10th and 11th | Sl. 118: skilful in all jobs, valorous, truthful; Sl. 130: honoured, virtuous, self-controlled |
| Taurus | Aquarius | Moolatrikona to 20 deg; own sign after | 9th and 10th | Sl. 106: a king or equal, a minister or army chief; Sl. 118: skilful in all jobs |
| Gemini | Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 8th and 9th | Sl. 94: short of livelihood, unless a benefic aspects; Sl. 106: a king or equal to one |
| Cancer | Aries | Debilitated | 7th and 8th | Sl. 82: religious, with wealth and children; Sl. 94: harm that will not mature with a benefic aspect |
| Leo | Taurus | Friendly (Venus) | 6th and 7th | Sl. 70: well known, happy abroad, a gifted speaker; Sl. 82: religious, wealthy |
| Virgo | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 5th and 6th | Sl. 58: a Raj Yog, great fame; Sl. 70: happy in foreign countries |
| Libra | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 4th and 5th | Sl. 46: royal honours, self-mastery; Sl. 58: a Raj Yog |
| Scorpio | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 3rd and 4th | Sl. 34: all kinds of happiness, self-made wealth; Sl. 46: royal honours |
| Sagittarius | Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 2nd and 3rd | Sl. 22: honourable, learned, wealthy; Sl. 34: self-made wealth |
| Capricorn | Libra | Exalted | 1st and 2nd | Sl. 10: royal honour, fame, self-earned wealth; Sl. 22: honourable, learned |
| Aquarius | Scorpio | Enemy (Mars) | 12th and 1st | Sl. 142: expenditure through royal persons; Sl. 10: royal honour, fame |
| Pisces | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 11th and 12th | Sl. 130: honoured, truthful; Sl. 142: moderate paternal happiness |
In sum, the two trine lords give the strongest results in the 10th, a Raj Yog for the 5th lord and kingship for the 9th; the Lagna lord's sloka carries self-earned wealth; only the 8th and 12th lords harm the house, and the 8th lord's harm is cancelled by a benefic aspect. For Saturn, the 5th or 9th lordship comes with Taurus, Gemini, Virgo and Libra rising, the Lagna lordship with Capricorn and Aquarius, and the cautious slokas with Gemini, Cancer, Aquarius and Pisces rising. Almost every row has at least one warm line, the strongest support any house gives Saturn in Ch. 24.
Aries and Taurus rising make Saturn the 10th lord in the 10th. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 118 read that as skilful in all jobs, valorous, truthful and devoted to elders; Ch. 21 Sl. 2 read a strong 10th lord in its own sign as fame and good deeds; and BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 35-36 make the 10th lord in the 10th the condition for the Chaturashiti-sama Dasha, which the house page says the app's alternate-dasha calculator reports.
How this app decides favourable or testing
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Saturn is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign; the 10th is not a dusthana. For other signs the engine combines Saturn's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Saturn is a temporary friend.
- Always favourable: Aries and Taurus rising (own sign, Moolatrikona) and Capricorn rising (exalted).
- Never favourable: Cancer rising, Saturn debilitated in Aries.
- Favourable if Venus or Mercury sits well from Saturn: Leo, Virgo and Sagittarius rising; otherwise Neutral.
- Friendly or Enemy, decided by Jupiter: Gemini and Pisces rising.
- At best Neutral: Libra, Scorpio and Aquarius rising, with Saturn in a sign of the Moon, the Sun or Mars.
In the engine sample 44.6 per cent of Saturn-in-the-10th charts printed the favourable line. The test does not look at Saturn's company, which the Bhrigu Sutras make decisive, or at the 10th lord, which Ch. 21 judge first. Note the tension for Libra rising: Saturn rules the 4th and 5th, Ch. 24 Sl. 46 and Sl. 58 read those lords in the 10th as royal honours and a Raj Yog, and the engine reads a Saturn in Cancer as Neutral at best, so it prints the testing line.
Strength is moderate. In the strength run a Saturn in the 10th averaged 8.81 of 20 and was Strong in 12.6 per cent, against 31.3 per cent in the 7th, where its directional strength is full. The Shad Bala calculator shows each part, and the Dashamsa (D10) calculator builds the division BPHS assign to power and position.
Saturn's three aspects from the 10th
Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th places from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). From the 10th those fall on the 12th, the 4th and the 7th, and the engine returns those three. The 4th is the other end of the 4th-10th axis, the house of home and comforts. The 7th is where Saturn's own directional strength is full. One BPHS Raj Yoga needs a 10th lord in its own house or exaltation aspecting the Lagna (Ch. 39 Sl. 21); a Saturn in the 10th never aspects the Lagna, so for Aries and Taurus rising it meets the first half and cannot meet the second. For the 4th, see the 4th house.
Any planet in the 4th and a Saturn in the 10th aspect each other by the universal 7th aspect, so whatever sits in the 4th both receives Saturn's aspect and returns it. The worked chart below has Mars and Mercury there, one malefic and one benefic, which is exactly the company the Bhrigu Sutras' two conditions are about.
Three more BPHS rules bear on a Saturn here. Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 make planets in mutual angles in own, exalted or friendly signs Yoga Karakas, mutual co-workers, "significantly so" in the 10th; a dignified Saturn in the 10th with another dignified planet in an angle is that case. Ch. 40 Sl. 13 read an exchange of signs between the 10th lord and the Lagna lord as association with royal circles; for Capricorn rising that is Saturn in Libra with Venus in Capricorn. And Ch. 31 Sl. 11-17 read an unobstructed Argala, benefic or malefic, on the 10th as royal honour, which the Argala calculator works out.
Amala Yoga, company and Saravali's readings
Amal Yog, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6, need exclusively a benefic in the 10th from the Lagna or the Moon, and the engine detects its stricter version only when no malefic joins or aspects that benefic. A Saturn in the 10th rules Amala out from the Lagna side. BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 put any planet joined with Saturn in the Kshudhita state, and Saravali Ch. 15 read Saturn with Jupiter as heroic, wealthy and famous, the head of a city or an assembly, which is Saravali's 10th-house verse in another key. The Bhrigu condition, success with a benefic and obstacles with a malefic, is about exactly this company.
Saravali Ch. 45 describe Saturn by dignity: exalted, royal assignments and leadership over villages and towns; in Moolatrikona, of good family, wealthy and valorous; in its own sign, honourable and happy; debilitated, adversity; in an enemy's sign, dirty and distressed; in a friend's sign, depending on others for food. The exalted line, leadership over towns, echoes the house verse's leader of a town. Ch. 29 by sign gives, for the Sasa cases: Capricorn (Aries rising), learned, honourable, famous, capable; Aquarius (Taurus rising), eminent but "a great liar"; Libra (Capricorn rising), rich, a king or a scholar, senior in his circle.
For Gemini and Pisces rising, a Saturn in the 10th is in Jupiter's Pisces or Sagittarius, and Saravali's sign verses there are among its kindest: first among relatives and friends with growing wealth and later a position of authority, and skilled in teaching, known for his own merits and well off in old age. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 and the Bhrigu commentator's Uttara Kalamrita citation (Saturn in the 1st, p. 99) also read Saturn in Jupiter's signs favourably, while the engine grades both signs Neutral by nature and turns them Friendly or Enemy only by where Jupiter sits. For those two Lagnas, the "later a position of authority" in the Pisces verse is a 10th-house matter arriving through the sign.
Timing: the Saturn period, the 10th lord and transits
The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 describe a strong Saturn's period as recognition by government, name and fame, a high position and property; Sl. 57-60 the reverse for a Saturn in a Trika, debilitated or combust, with an escape for a Saturn in an angle or trine, joined or aspected by a benefic, or in Jupiter's signs. The 10th is an angle, so a Saturn here meets the escape by position. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 1 use the 10th lord as their worked example that dignity and house together decide a period, and Sl. 5-8 give its period recognition from government, which the app shows as "career recognition and advancement" when Saturn rules your 10th. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 1/2 add the strongest statement in the dasha chapters: acquisition of a kingdom in the dashas of the Lagna lord and the 10th lord when the 10th lord is in the Lagna and the Lagna lord in the 10th. For Capricorn and Aquarius rising Saturn is the Lagna lord in the 10th, and the exchange needs Venus in Capricorn or Mars in Aquarius. For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and marks Saturn in the 10th from the Moon unremarkable; Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 311) reads it as "a period of gain". Career and money read together are on the Career and Money view, which weights planets in the 10th second after the 10th lord.
A worked chart
The figures below are this app's engine output for a birth at 23:52 IST on 10 August 2023 in New Delhi. They illustrate the rules, and are not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Taurus 0.67 deg |
| Saturn | Aquarius 10.96 deg (Shatabhisha), 10th house, Moolatrikona, retrograde |
| Moon | Taurus 21.17 deg (Rohini), 1st house, exalted |
| Mars and Mercury | Leo, 4th house, aspecting the 10th |
| Venus, the Lagna lord | Cancer 27.95 deg, 3rd house, retrograde, combust |
| House line | Favourable: "lasting career authority earned through sustained effort..." |
| Dasha verdict / quality | Favourable / good |
| Yogas naming Saturn | Sasa Yoga; Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga |
| Strength | 14.63 of 20, Strong: position 10, direction 2; aspected by Mercury and Mars |
| Saturn Mahadasha | From 24 Mar 2066 |
This is the commentator's own example. For Taurus rising Saturn rules the 9th and 10th, and here it is the 10th lord in its Moolatrikona in the 10th: BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24's Raja Yoga planet, Ch. 24 Sl. 118 and Sl. 106, Ch. 21 Sl. 2's strong 10th lord, Sasa, and the Chaturashiti-sama condition. The engine's Dharma-Karmadhipati flag is Saturn's double lordship, since for Taurus the 9th and 10th lords are the same planet. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 83 and the app's line agree.
The Bhrigu condition is mixed: Mercury, a benefic, aspects Saturn from the 4th, which the sutras read as success, and Mars, a malefic, aspects it too, which they read as obstacles. Kusuma Yoga is not met, because Venus is in the 3rd, not an angle. The Ascendant is at 0.67 degrees of Taurus, so a birth a few minutes earlier would have had Aries rising and Saturn in the 11th. The Moon in Rohini starts life in its own Mahadasha, and the Saturn period begins in 2066, around age 42.
A second chart: two Mahapurusha yogas facing each other
For the Capricorn case, the engine's output for 01:19 IST on 16 April 2013 in New Delhi gives a Capricorn Ascendant at 0.40 degrees and Saturn at 15.05 degrees of Libra in the 10th, exalted and retrograde, with Rahu beside it. Opposite, in Aries in the 4th, sit the Sun (exalted), Mars (Moolatrikona) and Venus. The yoga list holds both Sasa and Ruchaka, Mars's Mahapurusha yoga, and Saturn is Strong at 14.63 of 20, aspected by the Sun, Mars and Venus.
This is the arrangement BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 describe: planets in mutual angles in their own or exaltation signs, co-workers, and in the 10th "significantly so". Against that, the Sun's aspect on Saturn is one Saravali Ch. 29 read badly in most sign groups, and Rahu, a malefic, joins Saturn, the Bhrigu condition for obstacles. For Capricorn rising Saturn is the Lagna lord, so Ch. 24 Sl. 10 give royal honour and self-earned wealth. The Ascendant is again within half a degree of a sign boundary, which this page has met more than once: with a whole-sign house system, minutes of birth time decide the house.
Checking a Saturn in the 10th in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Saturn is in the 10th if it is in the tenth sign from your Ascendant. Check how close the Ascendant is to a sign boundary.
- Ask what Saturn owns, as the commentator does: which two houses, from the table above?
- Is a benefic with or aspecting Saturn (success) or a malefic (obstacles)?
- Find your 10th lord and Lagna lord, and their relationship, which Ch. 21 names as the method.
- Check Sasa (Aries, Taurus or Capricorn rising) and, for a fixed Lagna, Kusuma Yoga by hand.
- Count the 10th from your Moon too, as Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 advise; Saravali read Saturn there very differently.
- Note when the Saturn periods run, and keep transits separate.
The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.
Common misreadings
- "Saturn in the 10th means a hard career." The Bhrigu Sutras lean that way; Saravali's house verse gives a minister or judge; the commentator sides with Saravali when Saturn owns good houses.
- "Saturn in the 10th is the same as Saturn in the 10th from my Moon." Saravali read them in opposite directions.
- "Sasa Yoga guarantees authority." It is a named condition met; for Aries rising BPHS Ch. 34 still class Saturn a malefic because of its 11th lordship.
- "Saturn is strong in the 10th because it is an angle." Its directional strength is half of full there; it is full in the 7th.
- "Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga means a rare conjunction." For Taurus rising the engine raises it whenever Saturn, lord of both houses, is in an angle or trine.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Saturn in the 10th house good for career?
- The sources split. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 83 give wealth, learning and the rank of a minister or judge; the Bhrigu Sutras give stinginess, with success if a benefic is involved; their commentator defends Saturn in the 10th when it owns good houses. This app makes no career prediction.
- Why does Saravali read Saturn in the 10th two ways?
- Ch. 30 count the 10th from the Lagna and read Saturn there warmly; Ch. 33 count it from the Moon and read Saturn there as poverty and grief. Ch. 33 Sl. 2 say to use whichever of the two is stronger.
- Does Saturn in the 10th form Sasa Yoga?
- For Aries, Taurus and Capricorn rising, where Saturn is in Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra. In the engine sample it formed in 23.4 per cent of Saturn-in-the-10th charts.
- What does Saturn aspect from the 10th house?
- The 12th, the 4th and the 7th houses.
- Which rising sign gives the strongest Saturn in the 10th?
- Taurus: Saturn rules the 9th and 10th, causes Raja Yoga by BPHS Ch. 34, and sits in its Moolatrikona in the 10th, the Bhrigu commentator's own example.
- When does a Saturn in the 10th show its effects?
- Classically in the Saturn Mahadasha and Antardashas; BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 count a Saturn in an angle among the escape conditions from an adverse period. If Saturn rules your 10th, the app adds the theme of career recognition and advancement.
- Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
- See Saturn in the 9th house and Saturn in the 11th house; for a benefic in the same house, Venus in the 10th house.
