Saravali gives every planet gains in the 11th, and the Bhrigu Sutras agree with Saravali here more than for most houses. For Saturn the two readings are almost the same thought from two sides. Saravali: lasting riches. The Bhrigu Sutras: very wealthy, but with obstacles. Put together: slow and durable. The commentary adds the general rule, that all planets prosper in the 11th unless they rule the 6th, 8th or 12th, and that is where this page spends much of its time, because Saturn rules one of those for half the rising signs.
It is a map of rules, not a statement about anyone's income. For the planet, see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 11th house, Labha Bhava.
A note on sources
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. BPHS Ch. 22 attaches sums and ages to some combinations; this app computes none of them.
The house: income, prosperity and a difficult lord
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12 list the 11th as all articles, the son's wife, income, prosperity and quadrupeds. Friends and elder siblings come from the later house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras; the two layers are kept apart here. Saravali Ch. 3 calls the house Aya, income. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make it a Panaphara and an Upachaya; Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 33 give the same four Upachayas. Ch. 32 name Jupiter its fixed significator.
One point most summaries miss. BPHS treats the 11th house and the 11th lord differently: a planet sitting in the 11th is welcomed almost everywhere in the text, but Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say any planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, the 11th lord most of all. Saturn sits in the 11th in every chart on this page; it owns the 11th only for Aries and Pisces rising.
What the texts say about Saturn in the 11th
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 84
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 84 (p. 105): "long-lived, endowed with lasting riches, be courageous, will have knowledge of arts, be devoid of sickness and be endowed with money, people and wealth". With the 10th it is the house where Saravali reads Saturn most warmly. Saravali's own closing rule in Ch. 30 (Sl. 86-87, printed "86-81") says malefics harm the houses they occupy other than the 6th, 8th and 12th; its individual verses for Mars (Sl. 36) and Saturn in the 11th are entirely favourable regardless.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 46-48
Sutras 46-48 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 107, corpus line 4263): very wealthy, "but there will be obstacles in his way"; landed property and the government's favour; and in its own sign or exalted, learned, with "Mahabhagya Yoga (causing prosperity of a very high order)" and conveyances of all kinds. Landed property is Saturn's own signification in the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction. The commentary (pp. 107-108) states the house's rule openly: all planets "prosper in the eleventh house unless they are lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th", and "malefics will fare better than benefics". It names very powerful Dhana yogas for Aries, Taurus, Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius rising. Of the authorities quoted (p. 108), all four read it well, and the Note records their agreement.
This app wrote its lines from the chapter. Favourable: "durable, substantial gains - Saturn is considered especially auspicious here as a natural malefic in this upachaya house, capable of real Mahabhagya Yoga in own sign or exaltation". Testing: "gains that arrive later than hoped, after real effort". The testing line keeps the sutras' obstacles and softens them to delay. The favourable line names Mahabhagya Yoga, which the sutra itself glosses as prosperity of a very high order for an own-sign or exalted Saturn here; this page does not use any other definition of it.
| Source | What it says about Saturn in the 11th | Condition stated |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 84 | Long-lived, lasting riches, courageous, skilled in arts | None |
| Bhrigu Sutras 46-48 | Very wealthy, with obstacles; landed property; the government's favour | Own sign or exalted: learned, Mahabhagya Yoga, conveyances |
| Bhrigu commentary (pp. 107-108) | Malefics fare better here; all planets prosper; powerful Dhana yogas | Unless lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th; six named Lagnas |
| BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 | A favourable Saturn period | A strong Saturn in the 3rd or 11th |
| BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 | Dashas of planets in the 11th prove unfavourable | General rule; Rahu and Ketu excepted |
| This app (phSaturn11F / phSaturn11U) | Durable gains; or gains later than hoped | Dignity, tested by the engine |
The lordship exception
The commentator's "unless lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th" applies to Saturn for six rising signs: Gemini and Cancer, where it rules the 8th; Leo and Virgo, where it rules the 6th; and Aquarius and Pisces, where it rules the 12th. For those six, the general promise of the 11th is withheld by the same text that makes it. For the other six, Aries, Taurus, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn rising, Saturn rules no Trika and the promise stands as stated.
BPHS Ch. 24 read most lords well in the 11th, the textual basis for treating the 11th as a house where planets do well. Only the 12th lord brings loss into the house of gain, and the 8th lord depends entirely on its company. Even the 6th lord is given wealth here, through enemies. So BPHS's lordship slokas are gentler than the commentator's exception: of Saturn's three Trika lordships, only the 12th is read as loss in the 11th.
Two BPHS wealth yogas with Saturn in the 11th
BPHS Ch. 41 opens with seven Great Affluence combinations, each built on a planet in its own sign in the 5th with named planets in the 11th, and Saturn is among the planets named for the 11th in two of them. Sl. 8: the Moon in Cancer in the 5th with Saturn in the 11th, which needs Pisces rising, and puts Saturn in its own Capricorn. Sl. 4: the Sun in Leo in the 5th with Saturn, the Moon and Jupiter all in the 11th, which needs Aries rising, and puts Saturn in its Moolatrikona Aquarius. The engine checks both exactly as written and the Yogas calculator reports them as Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence). The worked chart below has the first.
Both are rare by construction, since two or four planets have to be in two particular houses at once, and both happen to put Saturn in its own sign in the 11th, the Bhrigu Sutras' "far better" case. Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that the 9th and 5th lords, and planets joined with them, give wealth in their dasha periods.
Other rules that put malefics in the 11th
- BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 48: all benefics in angles with malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th form a Raj Yoga, even for a person "of mean descent". A Saturn in the 11th is one of the malefics that verse wants.
- BPHS Ch. 43 Sl. 65, a longevity rule: malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th with benefics in the angles give long life.
- BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 11: Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars together in the 11th, a cessation of duties. Four malefics in one house, with the 10th and 11th judged as a pair.
- BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 5: malefics in both the 10th and the 11th, read as a verdict on deeds that this page does not repeat.
Saravali's Dhana Yoga (Ch. 13 Sl. 32) counts benefics, not malefics, in the Upachayas, so a Saturn in the 11th does not count toward it. The malefic-friendly rules above and the benefic-friendly Dhana Yoga describe different kinds of chart, and the sources do not rank them.
Your rising sign: Saturn's sign and the houses it rules
With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 11th is in the eleventh sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 11th.
| Ascendant | Saturn in | Natural dignity | Saturn rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 11th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Aquarius | Moolatrikona to 20 deg; own sign after | 10th and 11th | Sl. 119: wealth, happiness, children, "always delighted"; Sl. 131: gain in all undertakings |
| Taurus | Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 9th and 10th | Sl. 107: financial gains "day by day"; Sl. 119: wealth and happiness |
| Gemini | Aries | Debilitated | 8th and 9th | Sl. 95: unhappy early with a malefic, long-lived with a benefic; Sl. 107: gains day by day |
| Cancer | Taurus | Friendly (Venus) | 7th and 8th | Sl. 83: wealth through the spouse; Sl. 95: depends on company |
| Leo | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 6th and 7th | Sl. 71: wealth through enemies; Sl. 83: wealth through the spouse |
| Virgo | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 5th and 6th | Sl. 59: learned, an author, wealthy; Sl. 71: wealth through enemies |
| Libra | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 4th and 5th | Sl. 47: liberal, charitable, helpful; Sl. 59: learned, an author |
| Scorpio | Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 3rd and 4th | Sl. 35: gain in trading, adventurous; Sl. 47: liberal, charitable |
| Sagittarius | Libra | Exalted | 2nd and 3rd | Sl. 23: all kinds of wealth, famous; Sl. 35: gain in trading |
| Capricorn | Scorpio | Enemy (Mars) | 1st and 2nd | Sl. 11: always endowed with gains and fame; Sl. 23: all kinds of wealth |
| Aquarius | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 12th and 1st | Sl. 143: losses, sometimes gains through others; Sl. 11: always gaining |
| Pisces | Capricorn | Own sign | 11th and 12th | Sl. 131: gain in all undertakings; Sl. 143: losses |
Aries and Pisces rising make Saturn the 11th lord in its own house. BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2 read the 11th lord in the 11th as many gains, and Ch. 24 Sl. 131 as gain in all undertakings, with learning and happiness increasing day by day. Ch. 40 Sl. 12 give gain through royal association when the 11th is occupied by its own lord and unaspected by a malefic, with the Atma Karaka at the same time joined with a benefic. These two Lagnas are also the two Great Affluence Lagnas above. For Aries rising Saturn also rules the 10th, and BPHS Ch. 34 still class it a malefic there.
The exchanges of Ch. 22, worked through for Saturn
BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 8-10 read three exchanges with the 11th lord as sources of gain: with the Lagna lord (Sl. 8), with the 2nd lord, abundant fortunes after marriage (Sl. 9), and with the 3rd lord, wealth through co-born (Sl. 10). A Saturn in the 11th is one half of such an exchange whenever it rules the 1st, 2nd or 3rd and the 11th lord sits in Saturn's sign. For Capricorn rising, Saturn in Scorpio needs Mars in Capricorn, its exaltation; for Aquarius rising, Saturn in Sagittarius needs Jupiter in Aquarius. For Sagittarius rising, Saturn as 2nd lord in Libra needs Venus in Capricorn. For Scorpio rising, Saturn as 3rd lord in Virgo needs Mercury in Capricorn. The engine reports sign exchanges as Parivarthana and does not name the Ch. 22 readings.
BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 8-10 read the 10th and 11th together: a happy life when the 11th lord is in the 10th and the 10th lord in the Lagna, or when the 10th and 11th lords are together in an angle. For Aries rising one planet, Saturn, holds both lordships, and in the 11th it is in a Panaphara, not an angle, so the second version is not met by this placement. Ch. 21 and Ch. 22 treat work and its return as a pair.
Saturn is retrograde about a third of the time, 36.6 per cent of days in this site's engine run, and the texts pull two ways on it. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 21-23 give retrograde motion the highest motional strength; Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 39 read a retrograde malefic as grief and aimless wandering. The engine flags it and gives a retrograde Saturn no motional credit either way. For the 11th, where the sources' praise rests on the house, the texts add no retrograde condition.
How this app decides favourable or testing
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Saturn is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign; the 11th is never a dusthana. For other signs the engine combines Saturn's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Saturn is a temporary friend.
- Always favourable: Aries and Pisces rising (Moolatrikona or own sign) and Sagittarius rising (exalted).
- Never favourable: Gemini rising, Saturn debilitated in Aries.
- Favourable if Venus or Mercury sits well from Saturn: Cancer, Leo and Scorpio rising; otherwise Neutral.
- Friendly or Enemy, decided by Jupiter: Taurus and Aquarius rising.
- At best Neutral: Virgo, Libra and Capricorn rising, with Saturn in a sign of the Moon, the Sun or Mars.
In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 9,977 had Saturn in the 11th and 44.2 per cent printed the favourable line. That is lower than the sources' near-unanimous praise would suggest, because the engine's rule is about dignity and the sources' praise is about the house. A Neutral Saturn in the 11th, about a quarter of the sample, prints "gains that arrive later than hoped" although Saravali's verse carries no dignity condition at all. The test also ignores the commentator's lordship exception.
Strength is on the low side. The 11th is two houses from the 1st, where Saturn's directional strength is nil, and worth 1.33 of 4. In the strength run a Saturn in the 11th averaged 8.20 of 20 and was Strong in 10.8 per cent. The strength panel adds a "badhaka house" note for a planet in the 11th when the rising sign is movable (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), a reason line with no score change; BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 20-21 give this movable-sign Badhak rule in the sign-dasha chapter. The Shad Bala calculator shows each part.
Saturn's three aspects from the 11th
Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th places from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). From the 11th those fall on the 1st, the 5th and the 8th, and the engine returns those three. The 3rd-place aspect lands on the Lagna, so BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3 apply: a malefic touching the Lagna is weighed against any benefic aspect there. The 7th aspect lands on the 5th, the house the 11th is paired with in every Great Affluence yoga. The texts cited here state no separate result for these aspects. For the 5th, see the 5th house.
A geometric note from BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9: a planet in the 11th from any house causes Argala on it, and a planet in the 3rd obstructs it. A Saturn in the 11th intervenes on the Lagna unless something sits in the 3rd.
Saturn's Ashtakavarga, and Saravali's readings
BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 59-60 (8958) give Saturn a point ("all") in the 11th place from every one of its eight contributors, the only place where all eight agree, and the 6th and 11th places together hold 15 of Saturn's 39 points. Saturn's own Ashtakavarga therefore says what the planet-by-house verses say: the 11th is its best place. The Ashtakavarga calculator returns Saturn's table house by house.
Saravali Ch. 45 describes Saturn by dignity: exalted, royal assignments; in Moolatrikona, of good family, wealthy and valorous; in its own sign, honourable and happy; debilitated, adversity; in an enemy's sign, dirty and distressed; in a friend's sign, depending on others for food. Ch. 29 by sign gives, for the 11th-house cases that decide the engine outright: Aquarius (Aries rising), eminent but "a great liar"; Capricorn (Pisces rising), learned, honourable, famous; Libra (Sagittarius rising), rich, money and honours from abroad; Aries (Gemini rising), worn down by hard labour. Saravali Ch. 15 read Saturn with Jupiter as heroic and wealthy, and with the Moon as well liked but without wealth.
Timing: the two voices again, and transits
The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 list a strong Saturn in the 3rd or 11th among the favourable cases: recognition, name and fame, a high position, property. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 say the dashas of the 3rd, 6th and 11th lords and of planets placed in those houses prove unfavourable, with Rahu and Ketu exempted. The text does not reconcile the two, and Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 1/2 offer the working method: association with a trine lord turns a difficult lord's period favourable. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
The engine applies the dignity test only, so a dignified Saturn in the 11th reads favourable in the dasha panel. When Saturn rules your 11th, for Aries and Pisces rising, the app adds the 11th lord's theme, "gains that come with some obstacles, and health matters worth watching". For transits, the Gochar calculator marks the 11th from the Moon favourable for every planet, and Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 311) counts the 11th from the Moon among Saturn's three good transit positions. Here the natal and transit readings point the same way, though they count from different points.
A worked chart
The figures below are this app's engine output for a birth at 07:24 IST on 6 March 2020 in New Delhi, found by searching the engine's output for a chart that meets BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 8. They illustrate the rules, and are not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Pisces 5.83 deg |
| Saturn | Capricorn 4.57 deg (Uttara Ashadha), 11th house, own sign, direct |
| Moon | Cancer 1.43 deg, 5th house, aspecting the 11th |
| Jupiter, the Lagna lord | Sagittarius 26.35 deg, own sign, 10th house, with Mars |
| Sun / Mercury | Aquarius, 12th house |
| House line | Favourable: "durable, substantial gains..." |
| Dasha verdict / quality | Favourable / good |
| Yogas naming Saturn | Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence): the Moon in Cancer in the 5th, Saturn in the 11th |
| Strength | 12.46 of 20, Medium: position 7.5, aspect 3, direction 1.33 |
| Saturn Mahadasha | 19 Jun 2022 to 18 Jun 2041 |
For Pisces rising Saturn rules the 11th and 12th, so this is the 11th lord in its own sign in the 11th: BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2, Ch. 24 Sl. 131, the Bhrigu "far better in own sign" case, and Ch. 41 Sl. 8's Great Affluence, all met. The Moon in the 5th aspects Saturn, a benefic aspect, which Ch. 40 Sl. 12's "unaspected by a malefic" condition allows. Jupiter, the Lagna lord, is in its own sign in an angle, and the engine also reports Hamsa Yoga.
The cautions are lordship ones. Saturn is also the 12th lord, which brings in the commentator's exception to the 11th house's general promise and Ch. 24 Sl. 143's losses; BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 class Saturn a malefic and a maraka for Pisces. The Moon at 1.43 degrees of Cancer is in Punarvasu, a nakshatra of Jupiter, so life starts in the last two years of Jupiter's Mahadasha, and Saturn's nineteen years follow from age two. Saturn at 4.57 degrees is in its first decanate and direct, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the start of the period, in early childhood.
A second chart: Jupiter's sign turned Friendly
A Taurus case shows the Jupiter-sign rule at work. The engine's output for 05:30 IST on 1 June 2025 in New Delhi gives a Taurus Ascendant at 17.10 degrees and Saturn at 6.36 degrees of Pisces in the 11th. Pisces belongs to Jupiter, a natural neutral to Saturn; Jupiter sits in Gemini, the 4th sign from Pisces, a temporary-friend position, so the fivefold result is Friend and the engine prints the favourable line, with a neutral dasha quality. Had Jupiter been in the 5th to 9th sign from Pisces, the same Saturn would have read Enemy sign and printed "gains that arrive later than hoped".
For Taurus rising Saturn is the Yoga Karaka, lord of the 9th and 10th, and Ch. 24 Sl. 107 and Sl. 119 read those lords in the 11th as gains day by day and wealth and happiness. Saravali Ch. 29's Pisces verse adds growing wealth and later a position of authority, and BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 and the Bhrigu commentator's Uttara Kalamrita citation (p. 99) read Saturn in Jupiter's signs well too. Saturn rules no Trika for Taurus, so the commentator's exception does not arise.
Checking a Saturn in the 11th in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Saturn is in the 11th if it is in the eleventh sign from your Ascendant.
- Does Saturn rule the 6th, 8th or 12th from your Lagna? That is the commentator's exception.
- Is Saturn in its own sign or exalted, the Bhrigu Sutras' "far better" case?
- For Pisces or Aries rising, check the Great Affluence conditions of BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 8 and Sl. 4; the app reports them.
- Find your 11th lord: in the 11th, an angle or a trine (Ch. 22 Sl. 2), or debilitated, combust, or in a Trika with a malefic (Sl. 11)?
- Look at the Labha Pada in the Bhava Padas calculator, which BPHS Ch. 29 Sl. 22 use for sources of gain.
- Note when the Saturn periods run, and keep transits separate.
Money and work read together are on the Career and Money view. The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books.
Common misreadings
- "Saturn in the 11th means great wealth." Every source reads it well, with obstacles, but the commentator withholds the promise when Saturn rules a Trika, and this app computes no income.
- "The app says testing, so Saturn in my 11th is bad." The house line rests on dignity; the sources' praise for the house does not.
- "The 11th is good, so the 11th lord is good." BPHS Ch. 34 say the opposite about the lord, while praising planets that sit in the house.
- "Great Affluence means great wealth." It is a named condition met, rare by construction, and BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 17 require strength to be weighed.
- "The 11th is friends in BPHS." That meaning comes from the later commentary list; BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12 give income and prosperity.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Saturn in the 11th house good?
- Every source paraphrased here reads it well: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 84 give lasting riches, and the Bhrigu Sutras great wealth with obstacles and landed property, far better in own sign or exaltation. The commentator excepts a Saturn that rules the 6th, 8th or 12th.
- Which BPHS wealth yogas put Saturn in the 11th?
- Ch. 41 Sl. 8 (the Moon in Cancer in the 5th, Saturn in the 11th; Pisces rising) and Sl. 4 (the Sun in Leo in the 5th, Saturn, the Moon and Jupiter in the 11th; Aries rising). The engine reports both as Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence).
- What does Saturn aspect from the 11th house?
- The 1st, the 5th and the 8th houses. The aspect on the Lagna is a malefic aspect BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3 weigh against any benefic aspect there.
- Which rising signs give the strongest Saturn in the 11th?
- By dignity, Aries and Pisces (Moolatrikona or own sign) and Sagittarius (exalted). Aries and Pisces also make Saturn the 11th lord at home and are the two Great Affluence Lagnas.
- Is the Saturn dasha good for a Saturn in the 11th?
- BPHS speaks with two voices: Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 count a strong Saturn in the 11th as favourable, and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 call the dashas of planets in the 11th unfavourable. The app grades by dignity only.
- Is Saturn transiting the 11th from my Moon good?
- The Gochar calculator marks the 11th from the Moon favourable for every planet. It is a transit counted from the Moon, not the natal placement.
- Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
- See Saturn in the 10th house and Saturn in the 12th house; the other growing house Saturn is read well in is the 3rd.
