What the classical texts say about Saturn in the 12th house, the house Saturn signifies; the Bhrigu Sutras' benefic-or-malefic condition; the commentator's rule for a Saturn that rules a Trika; BPHS Ch. 23's one verse naming Saturn; and why this app always prints the testing line.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

BPHS Ch. 32 give each house a fixed significator, and Saturn holds two: the 8th and the 12th. A Saturn in the 12th is therefore the significator of loss and expense sitting in the house of loss and expense. The Bhrigu Sutras split the reading in two, by company: with a malefic, wasteful spending and poverty; with a benefic, happiness. Their commentator adds a rule that turns it round for six rising signs: Saturn in the 12th as lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th is very beneficial. BPHS Ch. 23 name Saturn in one verse. And this app prints the testing line for every Saturn in the 12th.

This page sets those statements out and follows the placement through the engine. It is a map of rules, not a forecast, and the afterlife statements the texts attach to this house are not applied. For the planet, see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 12th house, Vyaya Bhava.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Eye associations are the texts' and not a diagnosis.

The house: expenses, beds, distance and release

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 13 define the 12th in half a sloka: expenses, the history of enemies and one's own death. Ch. 23, the house's chapter, add beds and scented articles, wandering, expenses on religious grounds and final emancipation, each as the result of a particular combination. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list gives the long modern one: loss, restraint, confinement, secret enemies, comforts of bed, life abroad and Moksha. Saravali Ch. 3 gives the house the single name Vyaya.

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 12th an Apoklima and a Dusthana, and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 say association with the Trikas inflicts evils. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 give a planet in an Apoklima a quarter of Kendradi Bala. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add that the results of the 12th and 8th lords "will depend on their association", the 12th lord taking its colour from its other house and its company. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 add the 8th and 12th from Saturn as reference points for those houses.

Saravali Ch. 4 (line 472) gives Saturn a unique exception: where a strong significator usually magnifies what it signifies, "in the case of Saturn it is different". Set beside BPHS Ch. 32's list, in which Saturn signifies the 12th, that would suggest a strong Saturn means less of the 12th house's loss. No text cited here draws that inference, so this page notes the juxtaposition and does not rely on it. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (corpus line 4246) says the 12th is best left unoccupied and that benefics there cause "expenditure on good items"; it says nothing specific about Saturn.

What the texts say about Saturn in the 12th

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 85

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 85 (p. 105): "distressed, fallen in moral sense, talkative, will have defective eyesight, be unkind, shameless, will spend much and be insulted". It carries no condition, and it shares the eyes and the spending with the Bhrigu Sutras' malefic case.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 49-53

Sutras 49-53 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 108, corpus line 4301) open with "sinful" and an affliction in some part of the body, then turn on company. With a malefic: defective eyesight, wasteful expenditure and poverty. With a benefic: happy, and with good eyesight. Both cases carry an afterlife line, named here and not repeated. Almost every planet in the Bhrigu Sutras' 12th-house passages gets a bleak first line and then a condition that reverses it; for Saturn the condition is entirely about company, and it is stated in both directions.

The commentator (p. 108) then adds a lordship rule: Saturn in the 12th as lord of an auspicious house damages it, but as lord of the 12th, 6th or 8th gives "very beneficial results". It is the same principle the engine encodes as Vipareeta Raja Yoga, and he refers back to his Uttara Kalamrita quotation under Jupiter in the 12th (p. 86). Of the authorities quoted (pp. 108-109), all read the placement hard, and the Note says none gives it beneficial results.

BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 13: the one verse naming Saturn

BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 13: earnings will come "through sinful measures" if Saturn or Mars and the like occupy the 12th without a benefic's aspect. Saturn is named. The condition is the same one the Bhrigu Sutras use: a benefic's contact changes the reading. Sl. 1-4 make the general benefic point from the other side: expenses will be "on good accounts" if a benefic occupies the 12th, or if the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own house or exalted. Sl. 11-12 tie wandering from country to country to malefics around the 12th and its lord, and staying in one's own country to benefics.

This app wrote two lines from the Bhrigu chapter. Favourable: "discipline suited to solitude, service or structured work when Saturn rules a good house here". Testing: "real financial restriction and drawn-out setbacks otherwise". Like the Venus and Mars testing lines for this house, Saturn's is what the engine always shows. The app's provenance notes record that the passage's heaven-and-hell framing was dropped.

Why the app always prints the testing line

The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable line only when it has strong dignity and sits outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. For every Saturn in the 12th the second condition fails. In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,109 had Saturn in the 12th, and every one printed the testing line; the dasha verdict was unfavourable and the quality challenging for all of them. That is the rule and its limit: the supportive lines in the table record the Bhrigu conditions, but the present rule does not select them for a Dusthana.

The sample also shows what the rule sets aside: Saturn was exalted in 12.0 per cent of those charts, in its own sign in 7.8, in Moolatrikona in 3.7 and in a friendly sign in 20.8. None of the texts' conditions for this house is about dignity, though. The Bhrigu Sutras' condition is company and the commentator's is lordship, and the engine checks neither in its house line.

The commentator's rule and the Vipareeta yogas

Saturn rules a Trika for six Lagnas, and in the 12th forms one of the engine's three Vipareeta yogas for each: Vimala for Aquarius and Pisces rising, where it rules the 12th itself; Harsha for Leo and Virgo rising, where it rules the 6th; Sarala for Gemini and Cancer rising, where it rules the 8th. These are exactly the six charts the commentator's "very beneficial" covers. The Yogas calculator reports them.

The sourcing is narrow. The commentator quotes Uttara Kalamrita for the Vipareeta rule, and in that quotation the 12th lord qualifies in the 8th or 6th; the 12th lord in the 12th is the commentator's own extension "on the analogy" of the rule. BPHS reads the 12th lord in the 12th two ways: Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 count it as spending on good accounts, and Ch. 24 Sl. 144 as heavy expenditure, a lack of physical ease and irritability. The two can be read as measuring different things, the quality of expense and its quantity, and this page does not merge them. For Aquarius and Pisces rising both apply to Saturn.

BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28 form Raj Yogas from weak Trika lords: the 6th, 8th and 12th lords fallen, in enemy signs or combust, with a strong Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna; or even one of them debilitated and aspecting the Lagna. Note the direction: Parashara rewards the 12th lord's weakness with a strong Lagna, not its placement in a Trika. From the 12th Saturn aspects the 2nd, 6th and 9th, never the Lagna, so Sl. 28 cannot be met by a Saturn in the 12th.

Your rising sign: Saturn's sign and the houses it rules

With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 12th is in the sign before your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 12th, and in sum the matters of the house whose lord has moved here are spent.

Two rows soften. The Lagna lord's sloka, Sl. 12, applies its bad result only when the planet is "devoid of benefic Drishti and/or Yuti", which is Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius rising; the escape clause is the same benefic condition the Bhrigu Sutras and Ch. 23 Sl. 13 use. And the 9th lord here, Sl. 108, spends itself on auspicious acts and hospitality, loss of money but hardly of character; that is Saturn for Taurus and Gemini rising. In sum, the 12th does not make every planet behave badly; it makes each one give something away.

Taurus rising is the costly row. Saturn is the Yoga Karaka, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24's Raja Yoga planet, and in the 12th it is debilitated in Aries, losing both dignity and the two lordships it carries. The commentator's warning about Jupiter (p. 86), that a benefic in a Trika as lord of a good house damages that house; the same reasoning would apply to the Yoga Karaka here.

BPHS Ch. 42, on penury, name the 12th in several rules, and two touch Saturn. Sl. 2 read the Lagna lord in the 12th with the 12th lord in the Lagna, joined or aspected by a Marak lord, as penury; for Capricorn rising that is Saturn in the 12th with Jupiter, the 12th lord, in Capricorn, its debilitation sign. Sl. 15 read a spendthrift when the 12th receives the Lagna lord's aspect; a Saturn in the 12th occupies the house rather than aspecting it, so that rule concerns Saturn only for a chart where it rules the Lagna and sits in the 3rd, 6th or 10th. Each rule needs two or three conditions at once.

Saturn's three aspects from the 12th

Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th places from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). From the 12th those fall on the 2nd, the 6th and the 9th, and the engine returns those three. The 2nd is the house of wealth; BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2 judge the 12th and 2nd as a pair, benefics in both forming Subh Yog and malefics in both Asubh Yog. A Saturn in the 12th supplies the malefic half of Asubh Yog. The texts cited here state no separate result for these aspects. For the house of wealth, see the 2nd house.

Strength, company and Saravali's other chapters

Strength is low. The 12th is one house from the 1st, where Saturn's directional strength is nil, worth 0.67 of 4, and it is an Apoklima. In the strength run a Saturn in the 12th averaged 7.57 of 20 and was Strong in 7.3 per cent, the second lowest after the 1st. The Shad Bala calculator shows each part.

Company decides the Bhrigu reading, and the sources have something to say about each companion. BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 put any planet joined with Saturn in the Kshudhita state, so a benefic beside Saturn in the 12th is both the Bhrigu Sutras' turning condition and, by BPHS's avasthas, hungry. Saravali Ch. 15 read Saturn with Jupiter as heroic, wealthy and famous, with Venus as a skilled worker in wood or a painter, with the Moon as well liked but without wealth, and with Mars as one of its hardest pairs. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 9-10 name Rahu in the 12th with Mars, Saturn and the Sun in an afterlife verse that this page does not apply.

Saravali Ch. 45 describes Saturn by dignity: exalted, royal assignments; in Moolatrikona, of good family, wealthy and valorous; in its own sign, honourable and happy; debilitated, adversity; in an enemy's sign, dirty and distressed; in a friend's sign, depending on others for food. Ch. 29 by sign gives, for the 12th-house cases that decide the dignity outright: Capricorn (Aquarius rising), learned, honourable, famous, living abroad; Aquarius (Pisces rising), eminent but "a great liar"; Libra (Scorpio rising), rich, money and honours from abroad; Aries (Taurus rising), worn down by hard labour. Two of those mention life or honours abroad, and the Bhrigu Sutras' house list puts life in a foreign place among the 12th house's subjects. The texts make no link between them.

Timing: the Saturn period, Sade Sati's rising phase

The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 describe the period of a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th as adverse, with an escape for a Saturn joined or aspected by a benefic, in an angle or trine, or in Sagittarius or Pisces; the last applies to Aries and Capricorn rising. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord favourable when associated with a trine lord. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 13 read a planet tied to a Trika lord without a trine lord's aspect as harming finances in its dasha. The engine applies none of these, and grades every Saturn period from the 12th challenging. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

When Saturn rules your 12th, for Aquarius and Pisces rising, the app adds the 12th lord's theme, "expenses, distress or health matters needing attention", a softened version of BPHS Ch. 48. For transits, Saturn in the 12th sign from the natal Moon is the rising phase of Sade Sati, which the engine describes as a time to consolidate rather than expand, not as an omen, and the Gochar calculator marks testing. This "twelfth" is counted from the Moon. A natal Saturn in the 12th house from the Lagna is a different thing.

For Aquarius rising Saturn is both the Lagna lord and the 12th lord, here in its own sign in the 12th. The commentator's rule applies, Saturn as 12th lord in the 12th being very beneficial, and the engine reports Vimala. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 read the 12th lord in its own house as spending on good accounts; Ch. 24 Sl. 144 read it as heavy expenditure. Ch. 24 Sl. 12, for the Lagna lord in the 12th, apply only without benefic aspect or company, and Venus, a benefic, aspects Saturn from the 6th, which the engine records.

That same Venus aspect bears on BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 13, which needs Saturn in the 12th without a benefic's aspect, and on the Bhrigu Sutras' benefic condition, though the summary says "with" a benefic and this is an aspect, not a conjunction. The 2nd holds the Moon, a benefic, so Asubh Yog is not met. The Moon in Revati starts life in Mercury's Mahadasha, and the Saturn period does not begin until 2109; for this chart the dasha verdict describes a period it will not reach.

A second chart: the malefic case

For contrast, the engine's output for 06:57 IST on 15 November 2012 in New Delhi gives a Scorpio Ascendant at 0.98 degrees and Saturn at 10.73 degrees of Libra in the 12th, exalted, with the Sun beside it at 29.06 degrees of Libra, debilitated. Mars sits in the 2nd. The house line is testing and the quality challenging; strength is 12.79 of 20, Medium; no Vipareeta yoga forms, because for Scorpio rising Saturn rules the 3rd and 4th, not a Trika.

Here the Bhrigu Sutras' malefic condition is met: the Sun, a malefic, is with Saturn, and no benefic joins it. With Saturn and the Sun in the 12th and Mars in the 2nd, malefics occupy both houses, which is BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2's Asubh Yog. Ch. 24 Sl. 36 and Sl. 48 read the 3rd and 4th lords in the 12th as spending on evil deeds and as without domestic comforts. The Moon in Anuradha, a nakshatra of Saturn, starts life in Saturn's own Mahadasha, so the challenging verdict covers the first two years. The Ascendant is again within a degree of a sign boundary.

Two technical notes

First, Saturn's own Ashtakavarga differs between BPHS and the engine in exactly this place. Comparing the engine's table with BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 59-60 (8958) cell by cell: they agree in 94 of 96 cells and both total 39, but for the 12th place BPHS give points from Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus (4) and the engine omits Mercury's (3), crediting Venus's 5th place instead. A Saturn transit through your 12th sign can therefore show one point fewer in the Ashtakavarga calculator than a hand count from BPHS would give.

Second, this 12th is easily confused with another. BPHS Ch. 33 Sl. 63-74 read worship from the 12th counted from the Karakamsa, the Atma Karaka's Navamsa sign, which has nothing to do with the 12th from the Lagna. The Karakamsa 12th calculator computes it. A Saturn in the 12th house says nothing about that point, and the reverse.

One more structure names the 12th lord: BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7's long-life combinations include the 6th lord in the 12th, and the 6th lord in the 6th with the 12th lord in the 12th. For Leo and Virgo rising a Saturn in the 12th is the 6th lord in the 12th; for Aquarius and Pisces rising it is the 12th lord at home. These are parts of a longevity method this app does not compute, named here because they are another BPHS statement that a Trika lord in a Trika is not simply bad.

Checking a Saturn in the 12th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Saturn is in the 12th if it is in the sign before your Ascendant.
  2. Expect the testing house line in every case; read the dignity label and Strength panel separately.
  3. Is a benefic with Saturn or aspecting it? That decides the Bhrigu reading and BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 13.
  4. Does Saturn rule the 6th, 8th or 12th? That is the commentator's rule and the engine's Vipareeta yogas.
  5. What sits in the 2nd? Malefics there complete Asubh Yog; benefics in both houses form Subh Yog.
  6. Look at the Vyaya Pada in the Bhava Padas calculator and the Argala calculator, which BPHS Ch. 31 tie to expenses for this house.
  7. Note when the Saturn periods run, and keep Sade Sati, counted from the Moon, separate.

The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.

Common misreadings

  • "Saturn in the 12th means poverty." The Bhrigu Sutras say so with a malefic and the opposite with a benefic; their commentator calls it very beneficial when Saturn rules a Trika.
  • "The app says testing, so my Saturn is weak." Every Saturn in the 12th gets that line. Dignity and strength are reported separately.
  • "Saturn in the 12th means living abroad." BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12 tie wandering to malefics around the 12th and its lord, and no verse cited here ties Saturn here to foreign residence.
  • "Saturn in the 12th is Sade Sati." Sade Sati's rising phase is Saturn in the 12th from the Moon, a transit. A natal Saturn in the 12th from the Lagna is not.
  • "Saturn in the 12th means moksha." The moksha reading rests on BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 10, which needs a benefic in the 12th among other conditions, and is an afterlife statement this app does not apply.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturn in the 12th house bad?
The Bhrigu Sutras make it depend on company: wasteful spending and poverty with a malefic, happiness with a benefic. Their commentator calls it very beneficial when Saturn rules the 6th, 8th or 12th. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 13 read Saturn in the 12th without a benefic's aspect as earnings through wrongful means.
Why does the app always show the testing line?
Its house rule requires a planet to be outside the 6th, 8th and 12th before the favourable line can print. That held for no Saturn-in-the-12th chart in the engine sample.
Does Saturn in the 12th form a Vipareeta yoga?
For the six Lagnas where Saturn rules a Trika: Vimala for Aquarius and Pisces rising, Harsha for Leo and Virgo, Sarala for Gemini and Cancer. Those are the same six the Bhrigu commentator calls very beneficial.
What does Saturn aspect from the 12th house?
The 2nd, the 6th and the 9th houses.
What does Saravali say about Saturn in the 12th?
Ch. 30 Sl. 85 read it harshly: distressed, fallen in moral sense, talkative, with defective eyesight, unkind, shameless, spending much and insulted. It carries no condition.
Is Saturn in the 12th the same as Sade Sati?
No. Sade Sati begins when transiting Saturn enters the 12th sign from the natal Moon. A natal Saturn in the 12th is counted from the Ascendant.
Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
See Saturn in the 11th house and, across the Lagna, Saturn in the 1st house; for a benefic in the same house, Venus in the 12th house.
