Venus in the 12th is the one placement on this site where a commentator settles a disagreement by counting authorities. The Bhrigu Sutras open with "extreme poverty". Their modern commentator then reports that Brihat Jataka, Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani all make the native rich, that only Saravali dissents, and that he sides with the majority. The Bhrigu Sutras' own contents page lists the 12th, with the 6th, as a house where Venus gives Yoga effects. And this app, following the Dusthana rule, prints the testing line for every Venus in the 12th.
This page sets those positions side by side with their sources and follows the placement through the engine. It is a map of rules, not a forecast. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 12th house, Vyaya Bhava.
A note on sources
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page. The commentator's survey of other authorities (Brihat Jataka, Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani, Bhavartha Ratnakara) is cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it; those books are not in the corpus. BPHS Ch. 23 and the sutras contain statements about the afterlife; they are named here and not applied.
The house: expenses, bed comforts and release
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 13 define the 12th in half a sloka: expenses, the history of enemies, and one's own death. The house's own chapter, Ch. 23, widens it through particular combinations: beds and scented articles, wandering from country to country, expenses on religious grounds. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list gives the long modern one, from loss and confinement to comforts of bed, life abroad and Moksha. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (corpus line 4238) sums the two faces up as a lower octave of food, bed and comforts and a higher octave of moksha.
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 12th an Apoklima and a Dusthana, and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 say association with the Trikas inflicts evils. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 give a planet in an Apoklima a quarter of the positional strength called Kendradi Bala. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator, under the Moon in the 12th, adds the logic: the 12th is the twelfth from the house of birth, so it represents the end, and the house behind any house is read as what that house spends.
Venus has an unusual fit with this house. Bed comforts are one of the oldest meanings of Vyaya Bhava, and Venus signifies comforts; BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 32 even give Venus the "bed-room" as its abode. Where the texts disagree about Venus in the 12th, they disagree about money. On comfort they mostly converge.
The disagreement, as the commentary records it
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 65-68
The sutras open with "extreme poverty", and then reverse it: with a benefic, Venus in the 12th makes the person very wealthy and gives all comforts of bed (Sutras 65-68, Bhrigu Sutras p. 97, corpus line 3861). With a malefic the sutras give an inclination to sexual indulgence, and they add an afterlife line either way. So even the bleak source is conditional; the poverty line is the bare placement, and a benefic beside Venus turns it.
The commentator's survey
The commentator then digests other classics under "Other Views" (p. 98): Brihat Jataka, Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani all make the native rich; only Saravali dissents; and the commentator sides with the majority, citing a verse from Bhavartha Ratnakara that Venus gives the same yoga effect, wealth, in the 6th as in the 12th. That is the open disagreement of the 12th, and it fits the house, since Venus signifies the comforts the house was named for.
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 73
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 73 (p. 105): "indolent, happy, corpulent, fallen in moral sense, will eat cleansed food, will be skilful in providing sleeping comforts and attendants and will be won over by women". It says nothing about wealth either way, which is consistent with the commentator's report that Saravali is the one source that does not make this Venus rich. Happiness and ease are in it; riches are not.
BPHS Ch. 23 and the Bhrigu contents page
BPHS gives no Venus-specific 12th-house verse, but Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 say expenses will be "on good accounts" if a benefic occupies the 12th, and Sl. 12 say a person with benefics in the 12th and its lord's positions "will move in his own country" rather than wander. Advanced Predictive Astrology (line 4248) says the same of benefics in the 12th: "expenditure on good items", prudent expenses. And the Bhrigu Sutras' contents page (Chapter VII, p. 2) lists the 12th among the two houses where Venus gives Yoga effects.
Two qualifications from the same sources keep this from being simple good news. Advanced Predictive Astrology, which reads benefics in the 12th as spending on good things, also says the house is best left unoccupied. And BPHS Ch. 23 judges the house mainly through its lord: Sl. 5-6 read the 12th lord in the 6th or 8th, or in an enemy's or debilitation Navamsa, as being troubled by expenses, and Sl. 11-12 tie wandering from country to country to malefics around the 12th and its lord and staying in one's own country to benefics. A Venus in the 12th settles what occupies the house. It does not settle the lord, which for ten of the twelve Lagnas is another planet. Sl. 7 adds that the same method can be turned on relatives by counting from their houses, which this app does not do.
| Source | What it says about Venus in the 12th | Condition stated |
|---|---|---|
| Bhrigu Sutras 65-68 | "Extreme poverty"; very wealthy, comforts of bed | A benefic with Venus turns the reading; a malefic adds indulgence |
| Brihat Jataka, Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani (as quoted) | Rich | Reported by the commentator |
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 73 | Indolent, happy, corpulent, fallen in moral sense, won over by women | None; no wealth either way |
| Bhavartha Ratnakara (as quoted) | The same wealth as Venus in the 6th | Reported by the commentator |
| BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4, 12 | Expenses on good accounts; stays in own country | A benefic in the 12th |
| This app (phVenus12U) | "real financial strain otherwise" | Always printed: the 12th is a dusthana |
Why this app always prints the testing line
The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable house line only when it has strong dignity and is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The second condition fails for every Venus in the 12th. In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,146 had Venus in the 12th, and every one printed the testing line, "real financial strain otherwise". The favourable line written for the house, "genuine wealth and comfort when well supported", which is close to the commentator's majority view, exists in the app's strings and is never shown.
The dasha verdict and quality follow BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 and Sl. 83-84: a Venus in the 12th makes the period unfavourable and challenging, which they were for all 10,146 charts. The sample also shows how much dignity that overrides: Venus was in its own sign in 20.2 per cent of them, exalted in 7.7 and friendly in 26.1. The gap is direct: for the 6th, 8th and 12th the app always shows the testing line, and the reader should read the sources beside it.
Vipareeta yogas and the 12th lord in its own house
The engine's Yogas calculator reports Harsha, Sarala or Vimala when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in a Trika. Venus in the 12th forms one for six Lagnas: Harsha for Taurus and Sagittarius rising (Venus rules the 6th), Sarala for Libra and Pisces rising (the 8th), Vimala for Gemini and Scorpio rising (the 12th). The sourcing is narrow: the commentator (under Jupiter in the 12th, p. 86) quotes Uttara Kalamrita for the rule, which counts the 12th lord in the 8th or 6th, and extends it to the 12th lord in the 12th "on the analogy" of the rule. So when the app lists Vimala for Gemini or Scorpio rising, it follows that wider modern rule.
BPHS itself reads the 12th lord in the 12th two ways, and for Gemini and Scorpio rising both apply to Venus. Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 count a 12th lord in its own house as a sign of spending on good accounts. Ch. 24 Sl. 144 read the 12th lord in the 12th as only heavy expenditure, a lack of physical ease and irritability. The two passages can be read as measuring different things, the quality of expense and its quantity, and this page does not merge them. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add that the 12th lord's results depend on its association, which for Venus means the other house it rules.
Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules
With whole-sign houses, a Venus in the 12th is in the sign before your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 12th, and in sum the matters of the house whose lord has moved here are spent.
| Ascendant | Venus in | Natural dignity | Venus rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 12th | Engine yoga |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Pisces | Exalted | 2nd and 7th | Sl. 24: adventurous, without wealth; Sl. 84: penury, a spendthrift spouse | - |
| Taurus | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 1st and 6th | Sl. 12: unfruitful spending, unless a benefic aspects or joins; Sl. 72: spends on vices | Harsha |
| Gemini | Taurus | Own sign | 5th and 12th | Sl. 60: little happiness from children; Sl. 144: heavy expenditure | Vimala |
| Cancer | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 4th and 11th | Sl. 48: without domestic comforts; Sl. 132: depends on good deeds, befriends barbarians | - |
| Leo | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 3rd and 10th | Sl. 36: fortunate through a woman; Sl. 120: worried in spite of skill | - |
| Virgo | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 2nd and 9th | Sl. 24: without wealth; Sl. 108: spends on auspicious acts and guests | - |
| Libra | Virgo | Debilitated | 1st and 8th | Sl. 12: conditional on benefic aspect; Sl. 96: spends on evil deeds | Sarala |
| Scorpio | Libra | Moolatrikona 0-15 deg; own sign after | 7th and 12th | Sl. 84: penury, a spendthrift spouse; Sl. 144: heavy expenditure | Vimala |
| Sagittarius | Scorpio | Neutral (Mars) | 6th and 11th | Sl. 72: spends on vices; Sl. 132: depends on good deeds | Harsha |
| Capricorn | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 5th and 10th | Sl. 60: little happiness from children; Sl. 120: spends through royal abodes | - |
| Aquarius | Capricorn | Friendly (Saturn) | 4th and 9th | Sl. 48: without domestic comforts; Sl. 108: poor by entertaining guests | - |
| Pisces | Aquarius | Friendly (Saturn) | 3rd and 8th | Sl. 36: fortunate through a woman; Sl. 96: spends on evil deeds | Sarala |
Two rows carry an escape clause or a softer reading. The Lagna lord's sloka, Sl. 12, applies its bad result only when the planet is without benefic aspect or company, which is Venus for Taurus and Libra rising. The 9th lord here, Sl. 108, spends itself on auspicious acts and hospitality, which is loss of money but hardly loss of character; that is Venus for Virgo and Aquarius rising. The 11th lord row, for Cancer and Sagittarius, is similar. The 12th does not make every planet behave badly; it makes each one give something away.
Read against BPHS Ch. 34 on lordship, the table is lopsided in one place. For Capricorn and Aquarius rising, the two Lagnas where BPHS make Venus the single most useful planet, a Venus in the 12th puts the Yoga Karaka in the house of loss. Its two lordship slokas there are among the mildest in the column. The commentator's warning about Jupiter (p. 86), that a benefic in a Trika damages the good houses it owns, would apply to Venus in the same way.
The commentator's note on Saturn in the 12th (p. 108) adds a principle: a planet in the 12th as lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th is very beneficial. That is the Vipareeta idea again, and for Venus it is the six Lagnas in the last column. Libra rising is the sharpest of them: a debilitated Venus that is also the Lagna lord, forming Sarala as the 8th lord, with Sl. 12's escape clause about a benefic aspect deciding the Lagna-lord reading.
Named combinations involving Venus in the 12th
- Subh Yog, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2. Benefics in both the 12th and the 2nd form Subh Yog, read as eloquent, charming and virtuous; malefics in both form Asubh Yog. A Venus in the 12th supplies the 12th-house half.
- A conveyance rule, BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14: the Lagna lord a benefic, the 4th lord debilitated or in the 11th, and Venus in the 12th give conveyances at a stated age. The age has no method behind it and is not used here.
- Ch. 23 Sl. 14 names Venus in a 12th-house rule, but in the Lagna: the Lagna lord in the 12th with the 12th lord in the Lagna beside Venus gives expenses on religious grounds. It is listed so it is not mistaken for this placement.
- The penury rules of BPHS Ch. 42 that name the 12th need two or three conditions together; Sl. 15 reads a spendthrift when the 12th receives the Lagna lord's aspect, which for Taurus or Libra rising would mean Venus in the 6th, not the 12th.
BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28 form Raj Yogas from weak Trika lords aspecting the Lagna with a strong Lagna lord; a Venus in the 12th aspects the 6th, not the Lagna, so Sl. 28's version cannot be met by it. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh any detected yoga.
The dignity label you will still see
The house line ignores dignity, but the strength panel uses it. For signs Venus neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine combines its natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.
- Strong whatever else: Gemini and Scorpio rising (own sign) and Aries rising (exalted).
- Debilitated: Libra rising, Venus in Virgo.
- Friendly or Neutral, decided by Mercury or Saturn: Cancer, Aquarius and Pisces rising.
- Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Taurus, Sagittarius and Capricorn rising.
- At best Neutral: Leo and Virgo rising, with Venus in a sign of the Moon or the Sun.
Directional strength is low: the 12th is two houses from the 10th, where Venus's is nil, and in a separate run of the engine's strength calculation a Venus in the 12th averaged 8.77 of 20 and was labelled Strong in 10.3 per cent of charts. Combustion zeroes the position score within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde; Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays, and the engine does not. The Shad Bala calculator shows the components.
The aspect: Venus looks at the 6th
Venus has only its 7th-sign aspect, and from the 12th it falls on the 6th, the other house the Bhrigu contents page names for Venus's Yoga effects and the one Bhavartha Ratnakara, as quoted, pairs with the 12th for wealth. The engine returns the 6th. The texts cited here state no separate result for that aspect. The Venus in the 6th house page covers the reverse placement, where the same three-way disagreement appears.
Timing: the Venus period and its releases
The Venus Mahadasha runs twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). For a Venus in the 12th, Ch. 47 Sl. 83-84 describe strain with kin, business losses and separations, and the app grades the period challenging. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord favourable when it is associated with a trine lord, and the dasha of any planet aspected by a Kendra or trine lord favourable too; for four Lagnas the 12th lord is itself a trine lord. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 13 is the financial converse. The engine applies none of these releases. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
When Venus rules your 12th, for Gemini or Scorpio rising, the app shows the 12th lord's theme, "expenses, distress or health matters needing attention", a softened version of BPHS Ch. 48. For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and marks the 12th from the Moon testing for every planet, benefic or malefic.
A worked chart
The figures below are this app's engine output for a birth at 09:51 IST on 20 February 2001 in New Delhi. It shows an exalted, Strong Venus in the 12th, and is not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Aries 7.56 deg |
| Venus | Pisces 18.78 deg (Revati), 12th house, exalted, direct, not combust |
| Jupiter, lord of Pisces | Taurus 8.48 deg, 2nd house, with Saturn |
| Sun / Moon | Aquarius, 11th house / Capricorn (Uttara Ashadha), 10th house |
| Mars | Scorpio 8.91 deg, own sign, 8th house |
| House line | Testing: "real financial strain otherwise" |
| Dasha verdict / quality | Testing / challenging |
| Yogas in the chart | Parivarthana (Venus and Jupiter exchange signs), Sarala, Amala and others |
| Strength | 14.46 of 20, Strong: position 10, direction 1.33 |
| Venus Mahadasha | From 8 Feb 2098 |
Venus is exalted and Strong and still prints the testing line and a challenging quality, because the house is a Trika. For Aries rising it rules the 2nd and 7th, so Ch. 24 Sl. 24 and Sl. 84 apply, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22 call Venus a malefic and a maraka for this Lagna, and Ch. 47 Sl. 88-89 add the caution about a Venus that rules the 2nd or 7th. The Sarala Yoga in the list belongs to Mars, the 8th lord, in the 8th, not to Venus.
The chart has one feature the texts would weigh. Venus is in Jupiter's sign and Jupiter is in Venus's, an exchange the engine reports as Parivarthana: the 2nd lord sits in the 12th and the 12th lord in the 2nd. Jupiter, a benefic, is in the 2nd and Venus, a benefic, in the 12th, which is the Subh Yog arrangement of Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2, though Saturn also sits in the 2nd. The Bhrigu Sutras' turning condition, a benefic with Venus, is not met: Venus is alone in the 12th and the engine records no aspect on it. The Venus Mahadasha begins only in 2098.
A second chart: Vimala, and combustion
For the Vimala case, the engine's output for 06:28 IST on 1 June 2016 in New Delhi gives a Gemini Ascendant at 1.60 degrees and Venus at 15.31 degrees of Taurus in the 12th, its own sign, as lord of the 12th and the 5th. The Sun is at 16.90 degrees of Taurus beside it, so Venus is combust, and the engine sets its position score to zero: strength 2.96 of 20, Weak, with Mars and Saturn aspecting from the 6th. The house line is testing and the quality challenging. The yoga list holds all three Vipareeta yogas, Vimala for Venus, Harsha for Mars in its own Scorpio as 6th lord in the 6th, and Sarala for Saturn as 8th lord in the 6th.
Here the classical readings conflict inside one chart. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 read the 12th lord in its own house as spending on good accounts; Ch. 24 Sl. 144 read it as heavy expenditure; the commentator's extended rule gives Vimala. The Bhrigu Sutras' condition, a benefic with Venus, is not met: the Sun, a malefic, sits with it. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 would not let the combustion take away Venus's rays; the engine does. And the Venus Mahadasha runs from age 19 to 39, with the 5th lord's theme of education and children shown beside the 12th lord's theme of expenses.
Saravali's sign verses for the dignified cases
Saravali Ch. 28 describes Venus by sign. For the signs that fall in the 12th with strong or weak dignity: Pisces (Aries rising) gives courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech and wisdom; Taurus (Gemini rising) gives agriculture, scents, garlands and fine robes, charity and support of relatives; Libra (Scorpio rising) gives hard-earned money, valour, fine dress and fortune, with a life abroad; Virgo (Libra rising) gives skill and several incomes, short of happiness and pleasure. Saravali's 12th-house verse has no wealth in it, but three of its sign verses do, so even within Saravali the dissent the commentator reports depends on which chapter is read.
Checking a Venus in the 12th in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 12th if it is in the sign before your Ascendant.
- Expect the testing house line in every case, and read the dignity label and Strength panel separately.
- Is a benefic with Venus? That is the Bhrigu Sutras' condition for wealth and bed comforts.
- Find the two houses Venus rules and read both Ch. 24 slokas; look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala.
- Is the 2nd also occupied by a benefic (Subh Yog)? Is Venus exchanging signs with the 2nd or 12th lord?
- For the dasha, check BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17's releases by hand, and look at the Vyaya Pada in the Bhava Padas calculator and the Argala calculator, which BPHS Ch. 31 ties to expenses for this house.
- Keep transits, counted from the Moon, separate.
The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.
Common misreadings
- "Venus in the 12th means poverty." That is the opening line of the Bhrigu Sutras, which reverse it with a benefic; the commentator reports that most other authorities make the native rich.
- "The app says testing, so my Venus is weak." Every Venus in the 12th gets that line. An exalted Venus there can be labelled Strong.
- "Venus in the 12th means living abroad." BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12 tie wandering to malefics and staying at home to benefics, and no verse cited here ties Venus in the 12th to foreign residence.
- "Vimala Yoga makes this a Raj Yoga." Vimala forms only when Venus rules the 12th, for Gemini and Scorpio rising, and the engine follows a modern extension of the rule for it.
- "The 12th is the house of moksha, so Venus here is spiritual." The moksha reading rests on BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 10, which needs three conditions and is an afterlife statement this app does not apply.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Venus in the 12th house good or bad?
- The sources split. The Bhrigu Sutras open with extreme poverty and reverse it when a benefic joins Venus; their commentator reports that Brihat Jataka, Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani make the native rich, with only Saravali dissenting; Saravali's own verse gives ease and happiness without wealth.
- Why does the app always show the testing line?
- Its house rule requires a planet to be outside the 6th, 8th and 12th before the favourable line can print. That held for no Venus-in-the-12th chart in the engine sample, whatever its sign.
- Why is the 12th linked to bed comforts?
- BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 speak of beds and scented articles for particular combinations, the Bhrigu Sutras give "all comforts of bed" to Venus here with a benefic, and Advanced Predictive Astrology calls bed and comforts the 12th's lower octave.
- Does Venus in the 12th form a Vipareeta yoga?
- When Venus rules a Trika: Harsha for Taurus and Sagittarius rising, Sarala for Libra and Pisces, Vimala for Gemini and Scorpio. The Vimala case follows the commentator's extension of the Uttara Kalamrita rule.
- What does Venus aspect from the 12th?
- Only the 6th house. The texts cited here give no separate result for that aspect.
- Is the Venus Mahadasha bad for a Venus in the 12th?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 83-84 read it unfavourably and the app grades it challenging. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 allow a release through a trine lord's association or a Kendra or trine lord's aspect, which the app does not apply.
- Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
- See Venus in the 11th house and, across the Lagna, Venus in the 1st house.
