Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Venus in the 11th house, read well by every source; the Great Affluence yoga built on it; why BPHS is wary of the 11th lord and of dashas from this house; and how this app decides whether your Venus in the 11th reads as favourable.

The 11th is the house of income and prosperity, and Saravali Ch. 30 gives every planet there gains, though its Sun verse (Sl. 12) mixes in hard words. Venus gets one of the plainest: it will gain abundantly. The Bhrigu Sutras add learning, great wealth and land. Yet BPHS is the most cautious of the three about this house, not about planets sitting in it but about the planet that owns it and about dashas from it. Venus in the 11th sits where that difference shows clearly, and this page sets both sides out.

It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone's income. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 11th house, Labha Bhava.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. BPHS Ch. 22 attaches sums and ages to some of its combinations; this app computes none of them.

The house: income, prosperity, and a later list

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12 list the 11th as all articles, the son's wife, income, prosperity and quadrupeds. Friends and elder siblings, the meanings most readers attach to the house today, come from the later house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, which adds wishes and their fulfilment, profits and community. This page keeps the two layers apart: "BPHS" here means income and prosperity. Saravali Ch. 3 calls the house Aya, income. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 ask for gains to be read from the Lagna, from the Sun and from the Moon.

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 11th a Panaphara and an Upachaya; it is not an angle, a trine or a dusthana, so a planet here is never penalised for its house in this engine. Ch. 32 name Jupiter its fixed significator. And Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 carry the caution: any planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, and among the three the 11th lord counts most. It is a good house with a difficult lord, and Ch. 22 and Ch. 34 answer different questions: whether income flows, and whether a planet's period is smooth.

What the texts say about Venus in the 11th

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 72

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 72 (p. 104): "obedient servants, be bereft of all kinds of misery and will gain abundantly". Saravali's own closing rule in that chapter (Sl. 86-87, printed "86-81") says benefics strengthen the houses they occupy, and here the verse and the rule agree.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 62-64

Sutras 62-64 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 97, corpus line 3836): learned, very wealthy, an owner of lands and kind-hearted; with a benefic, many conveyances and gains by rightful means; with a malefic, gains by questionable means; and no gains if Venus is debilitated or joined to a malefic or to the lord of the 8th, 6th or 12th. The commentator (p. 97) calls Venus here for Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius and Cancer rising "powerful Dhana yogas", and exalted for Taurus rising "very gainful". Of the authorities quoted, Brihat Jatak gives prosperity, Saravali large gains, Chamatkar Chintamani a fortunate, wealthy, king-like person, and Phaldeepika wealth and comforts along with a line on women; the Note says all agree. Under Saturn in the 11th (p. 107) the commentator states the general rule the sutras assume: all planets prosper in the 11th unless they are lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th.

That exception matters for Venus more than for most planets, because Venus rules a Trika for half the rising signs: the 6th for Taurus and Sagittarius, the 8th for Libra and Pisces, the 12th for Gemini and Scorpio. For those six Lagnas the commentator's rule withholds the general promise, and the sutras' own "joined to the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th" clause is close kin to it.

This app wrote two lines from the chapter. Favourable: "strong, steady wealth and genuine generosity - a classically favourable placement". Testing: "gains through questionable means, or reduced gains, under affliction". The testing line carries the sutras' malefic clause directly.

Great Affluence: BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 7

BPHS Ch. 41 opens with seven wealth combinations, each built on a planet in its own sign in the 5th with named planets in the 11th. One of them puts Venus in the 11th: Mars in its own sign in the 5th, with Venus in the 11th. Mars owns the 5th for Cancer rising (Scorpio) and Sagittarius rising (Aries), so those are the only two Lagnas where it can form. The engine checks it exactly as written and the Yogas calculator reports it as Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence). The worked chart below has it.

For both Lagnas the yoga carries extra detail. With Cancer rising Venus in the 11th is in its own Taurus as the 11th lord at home, which BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2 read as many gains. With Sagittarius rising Venus in the 11th is in its own Libra as the 11th lord at home again, but it also rules the 6th, which brings the commentator's exception into play. The same named yoga can therefore sit on top of quite different lordship pictures. Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that the 9th and 5th lords, and planets joined with them, give wealth in their dasha periods.

The 10th and 11th read together

BPHS judges work and its return as a pair. Ch. 21 Sl. 8-10 read a happy life when the 11th lord is in the 10th and the 10th lord in the Lagna, or when the 10th and 11th lords are together in an angle. Ch. 40 Sl. 2 call a person "a chief in the king's court" when the 10th and 11th are free of malefic occupation and aspect and the 11th receives its own lord's aspect. A Venus in the 11th is a benefic occupant, so it does not spoil the first half of Sl. 2; whether the rest holds depends on the 11th lord and on what aspects the two houses. For Leo and Capricorn rising Venus is itself the 10th lord in the 11th, which Ch. 24 Sl. 119 read as wealth, happiness and children, "always delighted". The Venus in the 10th house page covers the neighbouring placement.

The aspect: Venus looks at the 5th

Venus has only its 7th-sign aspect, and from the 11th it falls on the 5th house, the trine of intellect and children. The engine returns the 5th. Two classical rules use exactly that aspect. BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 12 read many children when the 5th lord is strong and the 5th receives the aspect of strong Mercury, Jupiter and Venus; a Venus in the 11th is the only position from which Venus can supply its part. And BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 31-32 form Kalanidhi Yog when Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th is aspected by Mercury and Venus; with Jupiter in the 5th, a Venus in the 11th provides one of the two aspects.

A geometric note follows: a planet in the 11th aspects the 5th, which is why two of the Ch. 24 lordship slokas trade income against happiness from children. This app makes no statement about children from any of it. See the 5th house and Venus in the 5th house for the other end of the axis.

Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules

With whole-sign houses, a Venus in the 11th is in the eleventh sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 11th, and almost every lord gains something there.

Left out of the cells: Sl. 11 many wives; Sl. 35 not literate, serves others; Sl. 47 fear of secret disease; Sl. 71 somewhat short of progenic happiness; Sl. 83 less happiness from sons, daughters; Sl. 143 brought up by others.

Read together, only the 12th lord brings loss into the house of gain, and the 8th lord depends on its company. For Venus, Gemini and Scorpio rising bring the 12th-lord sloka; Libra and Pisces the 8th-lord one. Scorpio rising is the least favourable row on every count, with Venus debilitated in Virgo, which the Bhrigu Sutras say gives no gains, and lord of the 12th. Taurus rising is the strongest by dignity, an exalted Lagna lord in the house of gains, though Venus also rules the 6th there.

Cancer and Sagittarius rising make Venus the 11th lord in its own house. BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2 read the 11th lord in the 11th as many gains, and Ch. 24 Sl. 131 as gain in all undertakings with learning and happiness increasing day by day. BPHS Ch. 40 Sl. 12 give gain through royal association when the 11th is occupied by its own lord and unaspected by a malefic, with the Atma Karaka at the same time joined with a benefic. These two Lagnas are also the Great Affluence pair.

Exchanges BPHS Ch. 22 names, and where Venus fits

BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 8-10 read three exchanges with the 11th lord as sources of gain: with the Lagna lord (Sl. 8), with the 2nd lord, giving "abundant fortunes after marriage" (Sl. 9), and with the 3rd lord, giving wealth "through co-borns" (Sl. 10). A Venus in the 11th is one half of such an exchange whenever it rules the 1st, 2nd or 3rd and the 11th lord sits in Venus's sign. Working through the rising signs: for Taurus rising the Lagna lord Venus in Pisces needs Jupiter in Taurus; for Libra rising, Venus in Leo needs the Sun in Libra. For Aries rising the 2nd lord Venus in Aquarius needs Saturn in Taurus; for Virgo rising, Venus in Cancer needs the Moon in Libra. For Leo rising the 3rd lord Venus in Gemini needs Mercury in Libra; for Pisces rising, Venus in Capricorn needs Saturn in Taurus.

The 2nd-house chapter puts the same pair to work. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 4 say wealth is acquired when the 2nd lord is in the 11th and the 11th lord in the 2nd, or the two lords join in an angle or trine; Sl. 5 add the 2nd lord in an angle with the 11th lord in a trine from it, or joined with or aspected by Jupiter and Venus. The engine reports sign exchanges under its Parivarthana check where it finds them; it does not name the Ch. 22 or Ch. 13 readings.

Argala, and one Raj Yoga this placement does not fit

BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9 say a planet in the 11th from any house or planet causes Argala, an intervention, on it, and a planet in the 3rd obstructs it. A Venus in the 11th from the Lagna therefore intervenes on the Lagna, unless something sits in the 3rd. Ch. 39 Sl. 48 is the contrasting case: all benefics in angles with malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th form a Raj Yoga. That arrangement wants a hard planet in the 11th and Venus in an angle, so a Venus in the 11th is in the wrong slot for it.

Saravali's sign verses beside the house verse

Saravali Ch. 28 describes Venus by sign. The four signs that decide the engine's verdict outright fall in the 11th for these Lagnas. Taurus (Cancer rising): agriculture, scents, fine robes, charity, support of relatives, a principal position. Libra (Sagittarius rising): hard-earned money, valour, fine dress, protection of one's own people, fortune and a life abroad. Pisces (Taurus rising): courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech and wisdom. Virgo (Scorpio rising): skill, sweet speech and income from several sources, devoid of happiness and pleasures. Even the debilitated case speaks of several incomes, the 11th house's own subject, while the Bhrigu Sutras say a debilitated Venus here gives no gains. The two books disagree on that row.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Venus is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign. The 11th is not a dusthana, so dignity decides. For other signs the engine combines Venus's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.

  • Always favourable: Cancer and Sagittarius rising (own sign) and Taurus rising (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Scorpio rising, Venus debilitated in Virgo.
  • Favourable if Saturn or Mercury sits well from Venus: Aries, Leo and Pisces rising; otherwise Neutral.
  • Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Gemini, Capricorn and Aquarius rising.
  • At best Neutral: Virgo and Libra rising, with Venus in a sign of the Moon or the Sun. For Libra rising the Sun is always within two signs of Venus, so Leo reads Neutral unless the Sun is there too.

In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,149 had Venus in the 11th, and 55.2 per cent printed the favourable line. The test does not look at Venus's company, which the Bhrigu Sutras make decisive, or at whether Venus rules a Trika, which the commentator does. And dignity is not strength: in a separate run of the strength calculation, a Venus in the 11th averaged 8.24 of 20 and was labelled Strong only 8.6 per cent of the time, because the 11th sits next to the 10th, where Venus's directional strength is nil.

Two further engine details apply. The strength panel adds a "badhaka house" note when a planet sits in the 11th for a movable rising sign (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn); it is a reason line, not a score change. BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 20-21 do name the 11th as the Badhak Bhava of a movable sign, in the sign-dasha chapter. And combustion zeroes Venus's position score within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde; Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays, and the engine does not. The Shad Bala calculator shows all of it.

Timing: the two voices of BPHS

The Venus Mahadasha runs twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). Ch. 47, describing each planet's period, repeatedly lists a dasha lord "in a Kendr, Trikon, or in Labh" among the favourable placements, and the Antardasha chapters repeat it. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 say the opposite: the dashas of the 3rd, 6th and 11th lords, of planets placed in those houses, and of planets joined with them prove unfavourable, with Rahu and Ketu exempted. A Venus in the 11th falls under both. The text does not reconcile them, and Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 1/2 offer the working method: association with a trine lord turns a difficult period favourable. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

The engine applies neither rule directly. Its dasha verdict is the Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 test of dignity and dusthana, so a dignified Venus in the 11th reads favourable. When Venus rules your 11th, for Cancer or Sagittarius rising, the app adds the 11th lord's theme, "gains that come with some obstacles, and health matters worth watching", which is the Ch. 48 line. For transits the Gochar calculator marks the 11th from the Moon favourable for every planet; its code overrides the benefic table, which on its own would call Venus there neutral. The benefic table alone would say neutral; the calculator's output is favourable.

BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 35-38 (corpus line 8666) list no contributor as withholding a point from the 11th in Venus's own Ashtakavarga, so every contributor gives one, and Ch. 70 Sl. 34-36 tie gains to Venus transiting signs with more points. The Ashtakavarga calculator shows your figures.

BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 7 is met exactly, and the engine reports Great Affluence. Venus is the 11th lord in its own sign in the 11th, which BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2 read as many gains and Ch. 24 Sl. 131 as gain in all undertakings. The house line, the dasha verdict and the dasha quality are all favourable.

Three things pull the other way, all from the same sources. Venus is 5 degrees from the Sun and combust, so the engine sets its position score to zero and labels it Weak at 2.29 of 20. BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 11 list a combust 11th lord among the conditions for no gains in spite of effort; Sl. 2 lets exaltation override combustion, but Venus here is in its own sign, not exalted, so that release does not apply. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 would exempt a combust Venus from losing its rays, which leaves the two books disagreeing on this one point. And the Sun, a natural malefic, shares the 11th with Venus, which is the Bhrigu Sutras' condition for gains by questionable means; Mars and Saturn, both malefics, aspect Venus from the 5th. The Venus Mahadasha begins only in 2079.

A second chart: the debilitated case

For contrast, the engine's output for 10:46 IST on 10 October 2009 in New Delhi puts a Scorpio Ascendant at 19.55 degrees and Venus at 0.02 degrees of Virgo in the 11th, debilitated, with the Sun, Mercury (exalted) and Saturn in the same sign. The house line is testing, "gains through questionable means, or reduced gains, under affliction"; the dasha verdict is testing and the quality challenging; strength is 6.29 of 20, Weak, with Jupiter's aspect from the 3rd recorded. For Scorpio rising Venus rules the 7th and 12th, so Ch. 24 Sl. 83 and Sl. 143 apply, and the Bhrigu Sutras' "no gains if debilitated" is met in full, with two malefics, the Sun and Saturn, beside Venus as well.

One detail in that chart is a caution about precision rather than astrology. Venus sits 0.02 degrees into Virgo. A few minutes earlier it was in Leo, still in the 11th house but in a different sign, where for this chart the engine would have computed a different dignity. Near a sign boundary the planet's own position, not just the Ascendant, can flip a line. Saravali's Dhana Yoga verse would still count this Venus as a benefic in an Upachaya from the Lagna; counted from the Moon in Gemini, Virgo is the 4th, and the Moon-based version does not apply.

Checking a Venus in the 11th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 11th if it is in the eleventh sign from your Ascendant.
  2. Find Venus's dignity, and note combustion and the strength label separately.
  3. Does Venus rule the 6th, 8th or 12th from your Lagna? Is it joined to a malefic or to a Trika lord? Those are the Bhrigu conditions.
  4. Find your 11th lord: in the 11th, an angle or a trine (Ch. 22 Sl. 2), or debilitated, combust or in a Trika with a malefic (Sl. 11)?
  5. For Cancer or Sagittarius rising, is Mars in its own sign in the 5th (Ch. 41 Sl. 7)?
  6. Is Jupiter in the 5th, aspected by Mercury as well as Venus (Kalanidhi)?
  7. Look at the Labha Pada in the Bhava Padas calculator, which BPHS Ch. 29 Sl. 22 use for the sources of gain, and keep transits separate.

Money and work read together are on the Career and Money view. The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books.

Common misreadings

  • "Venus in the 11th means wealth." Every source reads it well, but the Bhrigu Sutras withhold gains for a debilitated Venus or one joined to a Trika lord, and this app computes no income figure.
  • "The 11th is a good house, so its lord is good." BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the opposite about the 11th lord, while praising planets that sit in the house.
  • "Great Affluence means great wealth." It is a named condition met; the worked chart has it with a Weak, combust Venus.
  • "The 11th house is friends and elder siblings in BPHS." Those meanings come from the later commentary list. BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12 give income and prosperity.
  • "A favourable app line means a smooth Venus dasha." BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 call the dashas of planets in the 11th unfavourable; Ch. 47 lists the 11th as good. The app applies neither.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venus in the 11th house good?
Every source cited here reads it favourably: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 72 says it will gain abundantly; the Bhrigu Sutras give learning, great wealth and land, with conditions about company and debilitation.
What is the Great Affluence yoga with Venus in the 11th?
BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 7: Mars in its own sign in the 5th with Venus in the 11th. It can form only for Cancer and Sagittarius rising, and the engine reports it as Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence).
Why does BPHS call the 11th lord difficult?
Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say any planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, the 11th most. It is a statement about lordship. Planets sitting in the 11th are read well throughout the texts.
What does Venus aspect from the 11th house?
Only the 5th house. BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 12 and the Kalanidhi rule of Ch. 36 Sl. 31-32 both use a Venus aspect on the 5th, which only a Venus in the 11th can give.
Is Venus transiting the 11th from my Moon favourable?
In this app's Gochar calculator, yes: the 11th from the Moon is marked favourable for every planet.
Why is my own-sign Venus in the 11th labelled Weak?
Most often combustion, which zeroes the position score, combined with low directional strength next to the 10th. In the engine sample Venus in the 11th was Strong only 6.0 per cent of the time.
Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
See Venus in the 10th house and Venus in the 12th house.
