What the classical texts say about Venus in the 10th house, where the Bhrigu Sutras read it as full of glory although Venus has no directional strength there; Malavya and Amala Yoga; Capricorn and Leo rising; and how this app decides whether your Venus in the 10th reads as favourable.

Venus in the 10th is a placement where two classical measures point in opposite directions and the texts say so. By signification the Bhrigu Sutras call it "full of glory", Saravali gives success, honour, wealth and fame, and the app's own line calls it classically one of the best placements for Venus. By direction, BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 give Venus no directional strength at all in the 10th; its full strength is in the 4th, directly opposite. The conclusion is plain: a planet can be well placed by signification and weakly placed by direction at once.

This page lays out those statements with their sources and conditions and follows the placement through this app's engine. It describes rules, not a career. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 10th house, Karma Bhava.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. BPHS Ch. 21 names no professions, and neither does this page.

The house: authority, livelihood and honour

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 list the 10th as authority, place, profession or livelihood, honour, the father, living in foreign lands and debts. Saravali Ch. 3 names it Karma and Mana, work and standing, and Ch. 33 Sl. 2 add that the Karmasthana is the 10th counted from the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list gives the modern one: honour, status, fame, authority, promotion and government.

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 10th both a Kendra and an Upachaya, and three passages single it out among the angles. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 rank its lordship highest among the Kendras and call the 7th and 10th specially for happiness. Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 say planets in mutual angles in own, exalted or friendly signs become Yoga Karakas, and "in Karm Bhava a Grah will be significantly so". Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 count a house lord placed in the 10th as one of the conditions under which any house prospers.

Directional strength: nil in the 10th

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measure the Moon and Venus from the 10th itself, so their directional strength is zero there and full in the 4th. The engine follows that pairing: in the worked chart below the Shad Bala calculator gives Venus 0 of 4 directional points. That is the one component of strength a Venus in the 10th always loses, whatever its sign.

The Bhrigu Sutras read both the Moon (Sutras 54-60) and Venus here as excellent anyway, and the two measures answer different questions. Directional strength is a component of a strength total; signification is what the planet brings to the house's subjects. Venus in the 10th is the sharpest case on this site of the two measures disagreeing, and it is worth keeping both in view rather than letting either cancel the other.

The cost is visible in the engine's totals. In a run of this app's strength calculation over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, a Venus in the 10th averaged 7.64 of 20, the lowest of the twelve houses, and was labelled Strong in only 8.6 per cent of charts and Weak in 39.2. A Venus in the 4th, where its directional strength is full, averaged 11.10 and was Strong in 29.2 per cent. Dignity, aspects and the rest still matter, but a Venus in the 10th starts four directional points behind a Venus in the 4th, and the averages show it.

What the texts say about Venus in the 10th

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 59-61: "full of glory"

Sutras 59-61 (Bhrigu Sutras pp. 95-96, corpus line 3791): "full of glory", with two conditions. With a malefic's company or aspect, difficulties and obstacles in undertakings. With Mercury, Jupiter and the Moon, many conveyances, religious ceremonies of many kinds, world-wide reputation, many Raja yogas, and a person "very fortunate and talkative". The commentator (p. 96) names Virgo, Capricorn, Aquarius and Cancer rising as very powerful Dhana yogas, calls Venus in its own sign in the 10th "a distinguished Raja yoga", and adds Malavya and Amala. Of the authorities quoted (pp. 96-97), Brihat Jatak gives wealth, Phaldeepika virtuous deeds, respect and high status, and Chamatkar Chintamani wealth through religious work; the Note calls the 10th "an ideal disposition" for Venus. The Bhrigu Sutras' pattern for the 10th is unusually uniform: almost every planet is read well, and almost every sutra adds that a malefic's company turns the result into obstruction.

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 71 and Ch. 33

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 71 (p. 104): "success in litigations and will be endowed with happiness, sexual unions, honour, wealth, fame and great wisdom". Its chapter on the 10th then reads each planet in the 10th from the Moon, and for Venus (Ch. 33 Sl. 8-13, p. 120) gives fortunate, beautiful, famous, successful, rich and honoured by the king. The two Saravali passages agree with each other and with the Bhrigu Sutras in direction, and Ch. 33 Sl. 2 would have you apply the second to whichever of the Lagna and the Moon is stronger.

This app wrote two lines from the Bhrigu chapter. Favourable: "real career glory and reputation - capable of forming genuine Raja Yoga here, classically one of the best placements for Venus". Testing: "real obstacles in undertakings under affliction". The testing line is the Bhrigu Sutras' malefic clause almost word for word.

Malavya and Amala: two yogas a Venus in the 10th can form

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Malavya when Venus is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle. For Venus in the 10th that means Gemini rising (Pisces), Leo rising (Taurus) or Capricorn rising (Libra). In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,155 had Venus in the 10th and Malavya formed in 29.4 per cent, the highest rate of the four angles in that run. The Yogas calculator reports it.

Amal Yog, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6, is the 10th house's own: if there is exclusively a benefic in the 10th from the Lagna or the Moon, the text gives fame "lasting till Candr and stars exist", honour, charity and virtue. The engine's version is stricter than the BPHS wording: it detects Amala when a natural benefic other than the Moon sits in the 10th from the Lagna or the Moon and no malefic joins or aspects it. A Venus alone in the 10th, with no malefic aspect, meets it. The same sample found Amala in 32.7 per cent of Venus-in-the-10th charts, counting any benefic. The app reads it as "lasting, well-earned reputation - recognition that builds steadily rather than fading".

Amala and the Bhrigu Sutras' malefic clause test the same thing from two sides. A malefic joining or aspecting Venus in the 10th blocks the engine's Amala and, in the sutras, turns glory into obstacles. What a yoga in your chart means explains how much weight a detected yoga can carry.

Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules

With whole-sign houses, a Venus in the 10th is in the tenth sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 10th, and two apply to every row. Read together, these slokas look like Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 at work: the 10th lifts whatever arrives in it.

Dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; lordship from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 condensed from the text. Left out of the cells: Sl. 10 paternal happiness; Sl. 22 libidinous, many wives, no filial happiness; Sl. 34 wicked females; Sl. 46 an alchemist; Sl. 70 not respectful to the father; Sl. 82 a disobedient wife; Sl. 94 a talebearer, no paternal bliss.

In these slokas the trine lords give the strongest results, a Raj Yog for the 5th lord and kingship for the 9th; only the 8th and 12th lords harm the house, and the 8th lord's harm is cancelled by a benefic aspect. For Venus, the 5th or 9th lordship comes with Gemini, Capricorn, Virgo and Aquarius rising. Of those, Gemini and Capricorn also give Malavya. The 8th lordship comes with Libra and Pisces rising, and Sl. 94's own release is a benefic aspect on the 10th.

Capricorn and Leo rising: Venus as the 10th lord in the 10th

For these two Lagnas Venus is the 10th lord in its own house. Ch. 24 Sl. 118 read that as skilful in all jobs, valorous, truthful and devoted to elders. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 2 read a strong 10th lord in its own sign as extreme paternal happiness, fame and good deeds. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 35-36 make "the Karm's Lord placed in Karm" the condition for the Chaturashiti-sama Dasha, and the app's alternate-dasha calculator reports whether that condition holds. And Malavya forms in both.

From there the two Lagnas diverge, and BPHS Ch. 34 says exactly how. For Capricorn rising Venus also rules the 5th, a trine; Sl. 39-40 say "only Sukr is capable of causing a superior Yog", and Sl. 13 call a planet owning a Kendra and a Kona specially a Yoga Karaka. For Leo rising Venus also rules the 3rd; Sl. 29-30 list Venus as a malefic for Leo, and the same passage says that even Jupiter joined to Venus, the 10th lord, "will not produce auspicious results". Same sign dignity, same house, opposite lordship verdicts.

One BPHS Raj Yoga built on the 10th lord is out of reach for Venus. Ch. 39 Sl. 21 need the 10th lord in its own house or exaltation sign aspecting the Lagna. From the 10th Venus aspects only the 4th, so a Venus that is 10th lord in the 10th meets the first half and can never meet the second. The rule suits a planet with special aspects.

Virgo and Aquarius rising: the 9th lord in the 10th

For these two Lagnas Venus is the 9th lord sitting in the 10th, and Ch. 24 Sl. 106 read that as a king or equal to one, a minister or army chief, virtuous and dear to all. The 9th and 10th lords are the strongest Kendra-Kona pair, the one with its own name, Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga. The engine flags it only when the 9th and 10th lords occupy the same house and that house is an angle or a trine. With Venus in the 10th, that means the 10th lord beside it: Mercury in Gemini for Virgo rising, Mars in Scorpio for Aquarius rising.

BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 8-10 add one more route. The 10th lord exalted and with Jupiter while the 9th lord is in the 10th gives "honour, wealth and valour". For Virgo and Aquarius rising, Venus supplies the third clause by sitting where it is; the first two belong to Mercury or Mars and to Jupiter. As everywhere in that chapter, the reading turns on the relationship between the Lagna lord and the 10th lord, which Ch. 21's closing sloka (Sl. 22) names as the method.

Saravali's sign verses for the strongest cases

Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 3-6 add that results in the 10th depend on the nature of the sign there, and its Ch. 28 describes Venus by sign. For Taurus (Leo rising): agriculture, scents, fine robes, charity and a principal position. For Libra (Capricorn rising): hard-earned money, valour, fine dress, fortune and a life abroad. For Pisces (Gemini rising): courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech and wisdom. For Virgo (Sagittarius rising): skill, sweet speech, several incomes and standing as a scholar in an assembly, devoid of happiness and pleasures. A principal position and a scholar's standing are both 10th-house matters, arriving here through the sign verse rather than the house verse.

Taurus and Libra rising: the exchange of Ch. 48

For these two Lagnas Venus is the Lagna lord in the 10th, and Ch. 24 Sl. 10 read that as paternal happiness, royal honour, fame and, "without doubt", self-earned wealth. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 add the strongest statement in the dasha chapters: acquisition of a kingdom in the dashas of the Lagna lord and 10th lord when the 10th lord is in the Lagna and the Lagna lord in the 10th. That needs Saturn in Taurus for Taurus rising, or the Moon in Libra for Libra rising.

Ask what the planet owns

The Bhrigu Sutras and their commentator disagree about Saturn in the 10th (p. 106), and the commentator's method applies just as well to Venus: ask what the planet owns. A Venus in its own sign in the 10th is the 10th lord at home; a Venus in the 10th for Virgo or Aquarius rising is the 9th lord in the 10th; for Libra or Pisces rising it carries the 8th lordship in. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 add that planets in mutual angles in own, exalted or friendly signs become mutual co-workers, and that in the 10th a planet is "significantly so". A dignified Venus in the 10th with another dignified planet in an angle from it is the case that sloka describes. And BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 11-17 read an unobstructed Argala, benefic or malefic, bearing on the 10th as royal honour; the Argala calculator works that out house by house.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Venus is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign. The 10th is not a dusthana, so dignity decides. For other signs the engine combines Venus's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.

  • Always favourable: Leo and Capricorn rising (own sign) and Gemini rising (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Sagittarius rising, Venus debilitated in Virgo.
  • Favourable if Saturn or Mercury sits well from Venus: Aries, Taurus and Virgo rising; otherwise Neutral.
  • Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Cancer, Aquarius and Pisces rising.
  • At best Neutral: Libra and Scorpio rising, with Venus in a sign of the Moon or the Sun.

In the sample, 55.4 per cent of Venus-in-the-10th charts printed the favourable line. The test does not look at Venus's company, which the Bhrigu Sutras make decisive, at directional strength, or at the 10th lord, which BPHS Ch. 21 judges first. A testing line means Venus lacks dignity; a favourable line does not mean a malefic is absent.

The aspect: Venus looks at the 4th

Venus has only its 7th-sign aspect, and from the 10th it falls on the 4th house, the house of comforts, conveyances and the home, and the one house where Venus has full directional strength. The engine returns the 4th. BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 10-14 read a benefic aspecting the 4th as happiness from vehicles, free of accident, and Ch. 15 Sl. 4 read the 10th and 4th lords together as fine houses. None of the texts cited here states a separate result for Venus's aspect from the 10th. The Venus in the 4th house page covers the reverse placement.

Strength and flags

Besides the nil directional strength, combustion zeroes Venus's position score within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde; Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays, and the engine does not. The Mild Kendradhipathya flag appears with Venus in the 10th for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, where Venus owns the 4th, 7th or 10th but not the 1st; BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 say the loss from Kendra lordship is greatest for Venus among the benefics, and Sl. 13 override it for Capricorn and Aquarius.

Timing: the Venus period and the 10th lord

The Venus Mahadasha lasts twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 describe the period of a Venus in its own or exaltation sign or an angle in terms of clothes, ornaments, conveyances, land and recognition, and a Venus in the 10th always meets the angle condition. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 1 use the 10th lord as the worked example of the rule that dignity and house together decide a period, and Sl. 5-8 give the 10th lord's period recognition from government; the app shows "career recognition and advancement, often with public or institutional backing" when Venus rules your 10th. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and marks Venus in the 10th from the Moon favourable, with the note "happiness, recognition or real financial ease". That is the same position Saravali Ch. 33 describe for a natal Venus, so here the transit rule and a classical natal rule share a frame. Career and money read together are on the Career and Money view, whose calculator weights planets in the 10th second after the 10th lord.

A worked chart

The figures below are this app's engine output for a birth at 13:43 IST on 10 October 2003 in New Delhi. Two hours later the same Venus, at almost the same degree, falls in the 9th of an Aquarius Lagna; the Venus in the 9th house page works through that chart. Neither is a reading of any person.

Much of the classical list is met. Venus is the 10th lord and 5th lord in its own sign in the 10th, the Yoga Karaka BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 name for this Lagna; Ch. 24 Sl. 118 and Sl. 58 apply; Malavya forms; and the 10th lord in the 10th meets the Chaturashiti-sama condition. The house line, the dasha verdict and the dasha quality are all favourable.

The conditions about company are not met. Ketu shares the 10th with Venus, and the engine counts Ketu as a malefic, so Amala does not form and the Bhrigu Sutras' clause, obstacles in undertakings with a malefic, is in play. Rahu's aspect is the only one the strength panel records. Mercury, Jupiter and the Moon, the trio the sutras want with Venus, are in the 9th, 8th and 3rd. Directional strength is nil, as it always is here, and the total is Medium. The Venus Mahadasha runs from age 16 to 36, and Venus at 6.80 degrees is in its first decanate, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the early part of the period.

Checking a Venus in the 10th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 10th if it is in the tenth sign from your Ascendant.
  2. Find Venus's dignity and, for a non-dignified sign, where that sign's lord sits from Venus.
  3. Is a malefic with Venus or aspecting it? That decides both the Bhrigu condition and the engine's Amala.
  4. Are Mercury, Jupiter and the Moon with Venus (Bhrigu Sutras 59-61)?
  5. Read the two Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Venus rules, and check Malavya (Gemini, Leo or Capricorn rising).
  6. Look at the Dashamsa (D10), the division BPHS assigns to power and position, and repeat the 10th-house check from the Moon, as Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 advise.
  7. Note when the Venus periods run, and keep transits separate.

The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.

Common misreadings

  • "Venus has no strength in the 10th, so it is wasted there." Directional strength is nil, but the Bhrigu Sutras call the placement full of glory and Saravali gives honour and fame. Strength and signification are different questions.
  • "Venus in the 10th means an artistic career." No source cited here names a profession, and BPHS Ch. 21 names none at all.
  • "An own-sign Venus in the 10th is always a Yoga Karaka." For Capricorn rising, yes; for Leo rising BPHS Ch. 34 list Venus as a malefic, because it also rules the 3rd.
  • "The favourable line means Amala Yoga." The house line tests dignity; Amala tests that no malefic joins or aspects Venus. The worked chart has one without the other.
  • "Venus in the 10th from my Moon is the same as Venus in my 10th house." Saravali Ch. 33 reads both, but they are different counts and can differ by several signs.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venus in the 10th house good for career?
The sources read it favourably: the Bhrigu Sutras call it full of glory, with obstacles if a malefic joins; Saravali gives success, honour, wealth and fame. BPHS judges the 10th mainly through its lord and the Lagna lord. This app makes no career prediction.
Why does Venus have no directional strength in the 10th?
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measure Venus and the Moon from the 10th house, making it their zero point; their full strength is in the 4th. The engine gives a Venus in the 10th 0 of 4 directional points.
Does Venus in the 10th form Malavya or Amala Yoga?
Malavya when Gemini, Leo or Capricorn is rising. Amala, in this engine, when no malefic joins or aspects the benefic in the 10th. In the sample Malavya formed in 29.4 per cent of Venus-in-the-10th charts.
What does Venus aspect from the 10th house?
Only the 4th house, where Venus's own directional strength is full. The texts cited here give no separate result for that aspect.
Which rising sign gives the strongest Venus in the 10th?
Capricorn: Venus in its own Libra, ruling the 5th and 10th, a Yoga Karaka by BPHS Ch. 34 and forming Malavya. Gemini gives an exalted Venus ruling the 5th, also with Malavya.
When does a Venus in the 10th show its effects?
Classically in the Venus Mahadasha and Antardashas. If Venus rules your 10th, the app adds the 10th lord's theme of career recognition and advancement.
Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
See Venus in the 9th house and Venus in the 11th house.
