Venus in the 4th is the placement where the classical measures line up more than anywhere else. The 4th is the house of conveyances, comforts, lands and the home; BPHS names Venus as the significator of conveyances in that very chapter; Venus has its full directional strength in the 4th and none in the opposite house; and the 4th is an angle, so a dignified Venus there forms Malavya Yoga. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras both read it warmly. The open questions are the ones the texts themselves raise: what condition the 4th lord is in, what Venus rules, and whether Venus is strong in the chart in front of you.
This page puts those statements side by side with their sources, then shows how this app's engine turns the placement into a line in your chart. It explains rules; it does not forecast. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 4th house, Sukha Bhava.
A note on sources
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Nothing here is a statement about whether you will own a house or about a parent's health.
The house: comforts, conveyances and the nadir
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 5 lists six things for the 4th house, which its translation calls Bandhu Bhava: conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, and lands and buildings. Saravali Ch. 3's names for it describe both the topic and the position: Griha and Vesma for the dwelling, Sukha for happiness, Bandhava for relatives, and Jala and Patala for water and the nether world, because the 4th is the lowest point of the chart. The Bhrigu Sutras add a longer list that includes academic education, which BPHS places in the 5th instead.
Structurally, BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 4th a Kendra, one of the four angles, and also a Chaturasra with the 8th. Being an angle matters because so many rules are written in terms of angles: a lord in a Kendra is well placed, a planet in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra forms a Panchamahapurusha Yoga, and Kendra and trine lords together form the commonest Raj Yoga. In each of those rules the 4th counts exactly as much as the 1st, 7th or 10th.
Three classical reasons Venus suits this house
Directional strength is full here
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures each planet's directional strength from a fixed house. For Venus and the Moon that zero point is the 10th, so their directional strength is nil in the 10th and full in the 4th, the opposite house. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35 agrees, and BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38 phrase it as Venus being strong in the North. This app's Shad Bala calculator uses the same pairing: a Venus in the 4th gets the full 4 of 4 directional points. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras are kind to the Moon and Venus here and hard on the Sun and Mars, and directional strength points the same way. It is a strength measure, not a verdict.
Venus is named as the significator of conveyances
BPHS Ch. 15, the 4th house's own chapter, ends with five slokas on conveyances (Sl. 10-14), and Venus is named in them as "the significator (Sukr)". One condition places Venus in the 12th with a weak 4th lord; another has the Sun in the 4th with an exalted 4th lord joined by Venus. The closing rule generalises: a benefic in the 4th, aspecting it, or joined to or aspecting its lord gives happiness from vehicles, free of accident, and a malefic in the same relationships the reverse. A Venus in the 4th is a benefic in the house, so the general half of that closing rule is met by the placement. The age figures in the other slokas have no stated method, and this app does not compute them.
A benefic in an angle
Several Ch. 15 slokas build on benefics in the 4th or in angles. Sl. 6 needs a benefic in the 4th, the 4th lord exalted and a strong significator of the mother together for a long-lived mother. Sl. 7 needs the 4th lord in an angle, Venus in an angle and Mercury exalted for the mother's happiness. A Venus in the 4th supplies one condition of each, never all of them. Both slokas stack three conditions and state only the favourable case. Reading the absence of any one of them as a statement about a parent is not in the text.
What the texts say about Venus in the 4th
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 65
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 65 (p. 104) gives "relatives, friends and happiness, be splendourous, will have conveyances and paraphernalia, be beautiful, rich and fortunate". Every item in it is one of the 4th house's own subjects. There is no qualifying word, unlike the verse for Venus in the 1st, which ends on timidity, or in the 3rd, which ends on low enthusiasm.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 23-28
Sutras 23-28 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 90, corpus line 3573): handsome, intelligent, happiness from brothers, happy and forgiving; conveyances drawn by horses in the 30th year and abundance of milk. With a strong 4th lord, horses, palanquins and gold. With the 4th lord joined to a malefic, in a malefic's or enemy's sign, debilitated or weak, no lands or conveyances, the mother in distress, and a line on illicit relations. The commentator (p. 90) finds the brothers and the mother's distress hard to explain for a benefic here, and calls Venus in the 4th for Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising powerful Dhana yogas. Of the authorities quoted (pp. 90-91), Phaldeepika gives a good conveyance, house, ornaments and perfumes, and Chamatkar Chintamani gifts from followers and care of the mother; the Note says all attribute good effects. The age is a single statement in the text with no method behind it, and this app does not compute it. The condition is the important part. Even for the planet that signifies conveyances, sitting in the house of conveyances, the Bhrigu text makes the result depend on the house's lord.
This app wrote two lines from that chapter. Favourable: "real comfort and property - capable of forming Malavya Yoga here, a genuine wealth combination in several charts". Testing: "reduced property and strain at home under real affliction". Both stay with the house's own subjects and say nothing about a parent.
| Source | What it says | Condition stated |
|---|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 | Venus has full directional strength in the 4th | None; a strength measure |
| BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 14 | Happiness from vehicles, free of accident | A benefic in, aspecting, or tied to the lord of the 4th |
| BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 6-7 | A long-lived mother; the mother's happiness | Three conditions each; Venus in an angle is one of them in Sl. 7 |
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 65 | Relatives, friends, happiness, splendour, conveyances, beauty, wealth, good fortune | None in the verse |
| Bhrigu Sutras 23-28 | Handsome, intelligent, forgiving, happy; conveyances in the 30th year | None |
| Bhrigu Sutras 23-28 | Horses, palanquins and gold | A strong 4th lord |
| Bhrigu Sutras 23-28 | No lands or conveyances; the mother in distress | The 4th lord weak, debilitated or afflicted |
| This app (phVenus4F / phVenus4U) | Comfort and property; or strain at home under affliction | Dignity, tested by the engine |
Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules
With whole-sign houses, a Venus in the 4th is in the fourth sign from your Ascendant. That fixes its dignity and the two houses it rules. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 4th, and two apply to every row.
| Ascendant | Venus in | Natural dignity | Venus rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 4th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 2nd and 7th | Sl. 16: wealth of all kinds; Sl. 76: truthful, intelligent, religious |
| Taurus | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 1st and 6th | Sl. 4: happiness from both parents, charm; Sl. 64: lacking maternal happiness, very rich |
| Gemini | Virgo | Debilitated | 5th and 12th | Sl. 52: happiness from the mother, a minister or teacher; Sl. 136: steady losses in land and houses |
| Cancer | Libra | Moolatrikona 0-15 deg; own sign after | 4th and 11th | Sl. 40: a minister with wealth of all kinds; Sl. 124: gains from maternal relatives, house and land |
| Leo | Scorpio | Neutral (Mars) | 3rd and 10th | Sl. 28: happy, wealthy, intelligent; Sl. 112: master of conveyances, lands and houses |
| Virgo | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 2nd and 9th | Sl. 16: wealth of all kinds; Sl. 100: houses, conveyances, devotion to the mother |
| Libra | Capricorn | Friendly (Saturn) | 1st and 8th | Sl. 4: happiness from both parents; Sl. 88: deprived of house, land and happiness |
| Scorpio | Aquarius | Friendly (Saturn) | 7th and 12th | Sl. 76: truthful, religious; Sl. 136: losses in land and conveyances |
| Sagittarius | Pisces | Exalted | 6th and 11th | Sl. 64: very rich, lacking maternal happiness; Sl. 124: happiness of house and land |
| Capricorn | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 5th and 10th | Sl. 52: a ruler, minister or teacher; Sl. 112: master of conveyances and houses |
| Aquarius | Taurus | Own sign | 4th and 9th | Sl. 40: a minister with wealth of all kinds; Sl. 100: houses, conveyances, happiness |
| Pisces | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 3rd and 8th | Sl. 28: happy and wealthy; Sl. 88: deprived of house and land |
Read together, these slokas say that lords of the 9th and 10th bring home and land, lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th take them away, and the 6th lord's row withholds maternal happiness while granting wealth. Five rows stand out for Venus. Cancer and Aquarius rising put Venus in its own sign as lord of the 4th itself, and Sl. 40 is one of the warmest lines in the chapter; BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 2 adds that residential comfort is complete when the 4th is occupied by its own lord and aspected by a benefic. Sagittarius rising gives the exalted case, with the mixed 6th-lord sloka. Libra and Pisces rising bring the 8th-lord sloka, the one that deprives the house of its own subjects.
Capricorn and Aquarius rising: the Ch. 47 rule
One dasha rule is written for this placement. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 85-87 single out Venus in the 4th as lord of the 9th or 10th, and read its period as "rulership of a country, or village", pious deeds such as building reservoirs and temples, name and fame, and happiness from wife and children. Venus rules the 10th for Capricorn rising and the 9th for Aquarius rising, and in both it is in the 4th only in Aries and Taurus respectively. These are also the two Lagnas for which BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 39-42 name Venus as the only planet able to give a superior Yoga or a Raja Yoga. The Venus Mahadasha page covers the period itself.
The two cases are not equal in the engine. For Aquarius rising Venus is in its own Taurus and always prints the favourable line. For Capricorn rising it is in Aries, a sign of Mars, a natural neutral, so its dignity turns entirely on where Mars sits: well placed from Venus, the sign reads Friendly; badly placed, Enemy sign, and the engine prints the testing line for the very placement Ch. 47 Sl. 85-87 single out.
Saravali's sign verses beside the house verse
Saravali Ch. 28 describes Venus in each sign regardless of house. Reading the relevant sign verse next to the 4th-house verse sharpens the Capricorn and Aquarius contrast. For Aries, Capricorn rising's case, Sl. 1-2 give night-blindness, many blemishes, hardness and little reliability, with lines on women, yet an army chief or chief of men, and eminent. For Taurus, Aquarius rising's case, it gives agriculture, scents, garlands and fine robes, charity, support of relatives, learning and a principal position. Agriculture and the support of relatives are 4th-house matters, so for Aquarius rising the sign verse, the house verse and the lordship rule all describe the same territory.
The other dignified cases follow suit. For Libra (Cancer rising) the sign verse gives hard-earned money, fine dress, protection of one's own people and fortune, with a life abroad, which sits a little oddly beside a house of the home. For Pisces (Sagittarius rising) it gives courtesy, liberality, great wealth and wisdom. For Virgo (Gemini rising), the debilitation sign, it gives skill, sweet speech and income from several sources, "devoid of happiness and pleasures". Happiness is the 4th house's own word, Sukha, so the debilitated case is the one where the sign verse withholds exactly what the house verse offers. The sign chapter does not simply follow the dignity ladder; here, for once, it does.
Malavya Yoga, and how common it is here
BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Malavya when Venus is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle. The 4th is an angle, so Malavya forms with Venus in the 4th whenever Cancer, Sagittarius or Aquarius is rising. In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,088 had Venus in the 4th, and Malavya formed in 27.9 per cent of them. It is a common yoga for this placement, and the Yogas calculator reports it with no claim beyond the condition being met. What a yoga in your chart means explains how much weight one detected yoga can bear.
The 4th also enters the Nabhasha patterns of BPHS Ch. 35 Sl. 9-11, which depend on where all the planets fall: all benefics in the 4th and 10th with all malefics in the 1st and 7th form Yav Yog, and the reverse arrangement Vajr Yog. A Venus in the 4th is a necessary part of Yav, never sufficient on its own, and these patterns are rare by construction.
How this app decides favourable or testing
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line for Venus in the 4th when Venus is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign. The 4th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. For signs it neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine combines Venus's natural relation to the sign lord (Mercury and Saturn friends, the Sun and Moon enemies, Mars and Jupiter neutral) with a temporary relation read from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.
- Always favourable: Cancer and Aquarius rising (own sign) and Sagittarius rising (exalted).
- Never favourable: Gemini rising, with Venus debilitated in Virgo.
- Favourable if Saturn or Mercury sits well from Venus: Libra, Scorpio and Pisces rising; otherwise Neutral.
- Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Leo, Virgo and Capricorn rising.
- At best Neutral: Aries and Taurus rising, with Venus in a sign of the Moon or the Sun. For Taurus rising the Sun is always within two signs of Venus, so Leo reads Neutral unless the Sun is in Leo too.
In the engine sample the favourable line printed for 56.3 per cent of Venus-in-the-4th charts, a little more than for the 1st, 2nd or 3rd, because exaltation came up more often: 10.1 per cent, against 6.9 in the 1st. The test does not look at the 4th lord, which the Bhrigu Sutras make decisive, or at aspects on the house. A testing line means only that Venus lacks dignity.
Dignity is not strength: combustion
The house line rests on dignity. The strength panel rests on more, and the two can disagree sharply. The engine marks Venus combust within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde, and a combust planet's position score drops to zero however good its sign. Venus was combust in 15.1 per cent of the Venus-in-the-4th sample. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 say a combust planet loses its rays, with Venus and Saturn excepted, so Saravali would not penalise a combust Venus in this way; the engine does not apply the exception. The worked chart below is an example: own sign, Malavya, full directional strength, and a strength label of Weak.
The aspect: Venus looks at the 10th
BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give Venus only the 7th-sign aspect, and from the 4th it falls on the 10th house, the house of work and standing. The engine returns that single house. It is the house where Venus's own directional strength is nil, and the 4th and 10th are two ends of one axis: BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 4 reads the 10th lord joined to the 4th lord in an angle or trine as acquiring fine houses. None of the texts cited here states a separate result for Venus aspecting the 10th from the 4th. See the 10th house for what that house holds.
Timing: Venus periods and Venus passing the 4th from the Moon
The Venus Mahadasha runs twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 describe the period of a Venus in its own or exaltation sign, an angle or a trine in terms of clothes, ornaments, conveyances, land and recognition, and a Venus in the 4th always meets the angle condition. Sl. 3-4 tie the timing within the period to Venus's decanate. Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 4th lord's period the plainest line in the list, acquisition of house and land, which this app words as "gains in property, home comforts and vehicles" when Venus rules your 4th, as it does for Cancer and Aquarius rising. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
The sign-based systems add one line. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 137-138, on the Chakra Dasha, give the period of the sign in the 4th good relations with kin, land, houses or a kingdom, conveyances and clothes, and sound health, in full for a benefic sign. It belongs to a Rasi dasha and should not be carried into Vimshottari.
Transits use the Moon. The Gochar calculator marks Venus passing the 4th from your Moon as testing, under the benefic rule that favours the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th. So a natal Venus in the 4th, read warmly by every source, and Venus transiting the 4th from the Moon, read as testing, point opposite ways. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 do link the 4th from the Moon to the mother, which is a third and separate frame.
A worked chart
The figures below are this app's engine output for a birth at 00:50 IST on 26 May 2008 in New Delhi. The chart was chosen because it meets the Ch. 47 Sl. 85-87 condition and still comes out Weak on strength. It illustrates rules and is not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Aquarius 9.38 deg |
| Venus | Taurus 7.09 deg (Krittika), 4th house, own sign, combust |
| Also in the 4th | Sun Taurus 10.97 deg; Mercury Taurus 27.54 deg |
| Saturn | Leo 8.01 deg, 7th house, aspecting the 4th |
| Jupiter / Moon | Sagittarius, retrograde, 11th house / Capricorn (Shravana), 12th house |
| House line | Favourable: "real comfort and property - capable of forming Malavya Yoga here..." |
| Dasha verdict / quality | Favourable / good |
| Yogas naming Venus | Malavya; Raja Yoga; Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga |
| Strength | 5.13 of 20, Weak: position 0 (combust), direction 4 of 4 |
| Venus Mahadasha | From 18 Jun 2099 |
Much of the classical list is met. Venus is in its own sign in an angle, so Malavya forms. It rules the 4th and 9th, so Ch. 24 Sl. 40 and Sl. 100 apply, and it is the 9th lord in the 4th, the case of Ch. 47 Sl. 85-87. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 41-42 call Venus the only Raja Yoga giver for Aquarius rising, and the engine finds a Raja Yoga and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga. Venus has its full directional strength.
Three things are not met. Venus is 4 degrees from the Sun, so the engine sets its position score to zero and grades it Weak overall, 5.13 of 20; Saravali's exception for a combust Venus would read it more kindly than the engine does. Ch. 15 Sl. 2 asks for the 4th lord in the 4th with a benefic aspect, and the one aspect the engine records on Venus is Saturn's, from the 7th. And Ch. 15 Sl. 7 needs Mercury exalted, which it is not. Finally, the Moon in Shravana starts life in the Moon's own Mahadasha, and the Venus Mahadasha does not begin until 2099. A rule about Venus's period can be true of a chart whose Venus period never comes in practice.
Checking a Venus in the 4th in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 4th if it is in the fourth sign from your Ascendant.
- Find Venus's dignity, and for a non-dignified sign, where the sign's lord sits from Venus. Note whether Venus is marked combust.
- Find your 4th lord. Is it in the 4th with a benefic aspect (Ch. 15 Sl. 2)? Weak or afflicted (Bhrigu Sutras 23-28)?
- Read the two Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Venus rules. For Capricorn or Aquarius rising, note the Ch. 47 Sl. 85-87 rule.
- Check Malavya (Cancer, Sagittarius or Aquarius rising) and the Kendradhipathya flag, which appears when Venus rules the 4th, 7th or 10th and not the 1st.
- Check strength in the Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators, and the divisions BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to fortunes and conveyances in the Chaturthamsa (D4) and Shodashamsa (D16) calculators.
- Look up when the Venus periods run, and keep the Moon-based transit frame separate.
The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books.
Common misreadings
- "Venus in the 4th means I will own a big house." Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras speak of conveyances and comfort, but the Bhrigu text makes it depend on the 4th lord, and this app makes no property prediction.
- "Full directional strength means Venus is strong." It is one component of Shad Bala. A combust Venus in its own sign in the 4th can still total Weak in the engine.
- "Venus in the 4th means a happy mother." BPHS Ch. 15 Sl. 7 needs the 4th lord in an angle and Mercury exalted as well, and BPHS also reads the mother from the Moon.
- "Venus in the 4th brings a vehicle at 30." That is a single Bhrigu sutra with no method behind it, and the app does not compute it.
- "Malavya Yoga makes this rare." It formed in 27.9 per cent of the sample charts with Venus in the 4th.
- "Venus transiting my 4th is good because my natal Venus in the 4th is good." Transits are counted from the Moon here, and Venus in the 4th from the Moon is marked testing.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Venus in the 4th house good?
- Every source cited here reads it favourably: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 65 gives relatives, friends, conveyances, beauty and wealth; the Bhrigu Sutras give intelligence, forgiveness, happiness and conveyances; BPHS gives Venus full directional strength here. The Bhrigu text conditions the result on the 4th lord.
- Why is Venus said to be strong in the 4th?
- BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures Venus's directional strength from the 10th house, so it is nil there and full in the 4th. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35 agrees. This app gives a Venus in the 4th the full 4 of 4 directional points.
- Does Venus in the 4th form Malavya Yoga?
- When Cancer, Sagittarius or Aquarius is rising, because Venus is then in Libra, Pisces or Taurus, an own or exaltation sign in an angle. In this engine's sample it formed in 27.9 per cent of Venus-in-the-4th charts.
- What is special about Capricorn and Aquarius rising?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 85-87 read the period of a Venus in the 4th as lord of the 9th or 10th as one of rulership of a country or village, pious deeds, name and fame. That is Venus in Aries for Capricorn rising and in Taurus for Aquarius rising.
- What does Venus aspect from the 4th house?
- Only the 10th house. The texts cited here state no separate result for that aspect.
- Why does my own-sign Venus in the 4th show as Weak?
- Probably combustion. Within 10 degrees of the Sun (8 if retrograde) the engine sets Venus's position score to zero. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays when combust; the engine does not apply that exception.
- Is natal Venus in the 4th the same as Venus transiting my 4th?
- No. The transit is counted from the Moon and is marked testing for Venus in the 4th. Neighbouring placements are on the Venus in the 3rd and Venus in the 5th pages.
