The 3rd house is where the classical texts like their hard planets. It is a growing house, an Upachaya, and the Bhrigu Sutras commentary calls it an accepted principle that natural malefics placed there do well. Venus is not a malefic. It is the strongest of the natural benefics, a planet of comfort placed in a house of effort, courage and siblings. The sources respond to that mismatch in a way worth studying: they are neither alarmed nor enthusiastic. They are lukewarm, and they say so in a few precise words.
This page collects those words, the conditions that go with them, and the way this app's engine produces the line you see in your own chart. It is a guide to rules, not a forecast. For the planet itself, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava.
A note on sources
Every classical statement on this page was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. This app computes nothing about siblings, and nothing here is a statement about your family.
The house: courage, co-born and the growing houses
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4 lists the 3rd house: valour, servants or attendants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction, journeys and the death of a parent. Ch. 32 narrows the family meaning to younger siblings and names Mars as the house's fixed significator. The Bhrigu Sutras add a longer, later list: memory, firmness, neighbours, short travel, writing, contracts, and the hands and arms.
Three classifications sit on top of those subjects. BPHS Ch. 7 and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 make the 3rd an Upachaya, a growing house, with the 6th, 10th and 11th, and also an Apoklima, a cadent house. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says a planet that rules the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives difficult results, the 3rd being the mildest of the three. The line between them matters: the first two are about sitting in the house, the third is about owning it. A Venus in your 3rd is always an occupant, and it owns the 3rd only for Leo and Pisces rising.
Why the malefic rule does not transfer
The texts' fondness for malefics here has a stated reason. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 (printed "86-81") say malefics harm the houses they occupy except the 6th, 8th and 12th; the Bhrigu Sutras commentary (Mars in the 3rd, p. 49) adds that the 3rd is an Upachaya "where malefics are said to give benefic results". Both statements are about malefics. Neither says that a benefic in an Upachaya does badly, and neither says it does especially well. The rule is simply silent about Venus here.
What the texts do say about benefics in the 3rd points two ways at once. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1, the opening rule of the 3rd house's own chapter, says that if the house is joined or aspected by a benefic the person has co-born and is courageous. A Venus in the 3rd satisfies that sentence by being there. Yet in the planet-by-planet verses the two natural benefics that usually help a house are lukewarm here: Saravali gives Jupiter a harsh verse and Venus little enthusiasm, and the Bhrigu Sutras' Note on Venus (p. 90) concludes that Venus "has not been considered good in the third house". The sources do not explain the difference, and this page does not invent a reason.
One more classical line uses the 3rd in a way that shows the contrast. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 17 builds a Raja Yoga on benefics in the 1st, 2nd and 4th with a malefic in the 3rd, and Ch. 43 Sl. 65, a longevity rule, gives long life for malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th with benefics in the angles. In both verses the 3rd is the slot for the hard planet and the benefics are elsewhere. A Venus in the 3rd fills that slot with the wrong kind of planet for those particular verses. That is a statement about two combinations, not a verdict on the placement.
What the texts say about Venus in the 3rd
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 64
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 64 (p. 104): "happy, rich, conquered by women, be vile, little enthusiastic and will be bereft of luck and paraphernalia". Two favourable words and several qualifying ones. Set beside the 3rd-house verses for the Sun, Mars and Saturn, which hand out valour, strength and victory over opponents, it is a quiet verse. Venus here brings comfort and means into a house whose own subject is drive, and the verse reports that drive is what is missing.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 20-22
The Bhrigu Sutras give the placement three sutras, one of the shortest Venus passages in the chapter. Sutras 20-22 (p. 89, corpus line 3537): "very miser", tolerant, a good number of brothers, success by determined efforts; later the number of brothers decreases, and the brothers gain less and less by their efforts. The effort is real and the outcome is earned. The Bhrigu version is warmer than Saravali's on that point: Saravali reports low enthusiasm, the Bhrigu Sutras report determination that succeeds.
On siblings the sutras give with one hand and take with the other: a good number of brothers, then fewer. They then turn to the 3rd lord: strong, in its own sign or exalted, more brothers; in the 6th, 8th or 12th or with malefics, loss of brothers. The commentator (p. 89) calls the passage unclear, since a benefic should only increase brothers, and adds that a feminine Venus should give more sisters. Of the authorities quoted (pp. 89-90), Brihat Jatak gives stinginess, Phaldeepika a miser without happiness, wealth or wife, Chamatkar Chintamani no loss of brothers and sisters but little courage. The occupant never settles it alone.
This app wrote two lines from that chapter. The favourable one reads "determined effort and, through Venus' own aspect, real prosperity in several charts". The testing one reads "financial caution and a more withdrawn disposition". The testing line carries the miserliness and low drive of the sources; the favourable line carries the determination and points at Venus's aspect, which from the 3rd falls on the 9th house of fortune. The Bhrigu Sutras' Note (p. 90) makes the same point for Virgo and Aquarius rising, where Venus rules the 9th and its aspect on its own house makes the native prosperous.
BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 4 and Saravali Ch. 34
Two further statements bear on Venus specifically. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 19 classes Venus as female, and Ch. 14 Sl. 4 reads the sex of younger siblings from the gender of the planets in the 3rd: female planets there indicate younger sisters, male planets younger brothers, a mix both. The verse ends by requiring strength to be assessed before anything is declared. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 21-24 (pp. 126-127) make a benefic's sign holding benefics in the 3rd a source of happiness from co-born, and names one pairing directly: Venus in the 3rd aspected by Jupiter increases that happiness. This app computes no sibling count or sex from any of these.
| Source | For the person | For siblings | Condition stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 | Courageous | Endowed with co-born | A benefic joins or aspects the 3rd |
| BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 4 | Not addressed | Female planets indicate younger sisters | Strength to be assessed first |
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 64 | Happy and rich; conquered by women; vile; little enthusiasm; without luck | Not addressed | None in the verse |
| Saravali Ch. 34 | Not addressed | Happiness from co-born | Benefic sign holding benefics; Jupiter's aspect on Venus |
| Bhrigu Sutras 20-22 | Very miserly, tolerant, success through effort | A good number of brothers, later fewer | A strong 3rd lord adds brothers; an afflicted one loses them |
| This app (phVenus3F / phVenus3U) | Effort and prosperity; or caution and withdrawal | Not addressed | Dignity, tested by the engine |
Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules
With whole-sign houses, Venus in the 3rd sits in the third sign from your Ascendant, which fixes its dignity and the two houses it rules. If you do not know your rising sign, the Lagna calculator finds it from your birth time and place. BPHS Ch. 24 gives one sloka for each house lord placed in the 3rd, and two apply to every row below.
| Ascendant | Venus in | Natural dignity | Venus rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 3rd |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 2nd and 7th | Sl. 15: valorous, wise, virtuous, miserly with a benefic; Sl. 75: difficulty in the matter of children |
| Taurus | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 1st and 6th | Sl. 3: valour "equal to a lion", wealth, honour; Sl. 63: quick to anger, lacking courage |
| Gemini | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 5th and 12th | Sl. 51: attached to co-born, miserly, absorbed in own work; Sl. 135: without happiness from siblings |
| Cancer | Virgo | Debilitated | 4th and 11th | Sl. 39: valour, generosity, self-earned wealth; Sl. 123: skilful, wealthy, happy with siblings |
| Leo | Libra | Moolatrikona 0-15 deg; own sign after | 3rd and 10th | Sl. 27: happiness through co-born, cheerfulness; Sl. 111: happiness from brothers, eloquent, truthful |
| Virgo | Scorpio | Neutral (Mars) | 2nd and 9th | Sl. 15: valorous, wise, miserly with a benefic; Sl. 99: happiness from siblings, wealth, charm |
| Libra | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 1st and 8th | Sl. 3: lion-like valour; Sl. 87: without happiness from siblings, lacking helpers |
| Scorpio | Capricorn | Friendly (Saturn) | 7th and 12th | Sl. 75: difficulty about children; Sl. 135: hostile, self-serving |
| Sagittarius | Aquarius | Friendly (Saturn) | 6th and 11th | Sl. 63: lacking courage, at odds with co-born; Sl. 123: skilful, happy with siblings |
| Capricorn | Pisces | Exalted | 5th and 10th | Sl. 51: attached to co-born, miserly; Sl. 111: valorous, eloquent, truthful |
| Aquarius | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 4th and 9th | Sl. 39: valour, self-earned wealth; Sl. 99: happiness from siblings, virtue, charm |
| Pisces | Taurus | Own sign | 3rd and 8th | Sl. 27: happiness through co-born; Sl. 87: without happiness from siblings |
Two words recur across that last column that also appear in the Venus-specific verses: miserly (Sl. 15, Sl. 51) and valour. The Ch. 24 rows follow lordship, not the planet, so the recurrence is partly coincidence. But it means that for Aries, Virgo, Gemini and Capricorn rising, the lordship sloka and the Bhrigu Sutras' "very miser" say the same thing from two directions.
The strongest assembly the sources allow is Leo rising. Venus is in its own sign, it rules the 3rd from the 3rd, which Ch. 24 Sl. 27 reads as happiness through co-born, and it also rules the 10th, an angle, which Sl. 111 reads as happiness from brothers and truthfulness. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 adds that a planet owning a more prominent house gives that house's results over its lesser one, which makes the 3rd lordship the junior one for Leo. Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 still lists Venus as a malefic for Leo, and says that even joined to Jupiter it gives no Yoga.
Pisces rising is the case that runs the other way. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the 8th lord becomes specifically harmful when it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, and for Pisces rising Venus owns the 3rd and the 8th. Venus sits in its own Taurus, a good dignity, and Sl. 27 and Sl. 87 then give opposite sibling readings for its two lordships. Capricorn rising puts an exalted Venus here as Yoga Karaka, the worked chart below.
What Saravali says about the sign itself
Saravali also describes Venus sign by sign in Ch. 28, independently of house. Four of them are worth setting beside the 3rd-house reading because they decide the engine's verdict outright. For Libra (Leo rising) the verse gives hard-earned money, valour, fine dress, protection of one's own people and fortune, and a life abroad. Valour and hard-earned money are 3rd-house words, and they arrive here from the sign verse, not the house verse. For Taurus (Pisces rising) it gives agriculture, scents and fine robes, charity and support of relatives. For Pisces (Capricorn rising) it gives courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech and a person who keeps promises. For Virgo (Cancer rising), the debilitation sign, (Sl. 11-12) it gives a soft, skilful, sweet-spoken scholar with income from several sources, devoid of happiness and pleasures; the verse also has lines on bad company and on more daughters than sons.
Two of those four sit uneasily with the house verse. Saravali's 3rd-house Venus lacks enthusiasm, while its Libra Venus has valour and its Pisces Venus great wealth. Ch. 28 does not simply follow the dignity ladder, and the engine's labels and Saravali's portraits answer different questions: one grades strength, the other describes temperament. A reader of a Venus in the 3rd has three Saravali sentences to hold, the house verse, the sign verse and Ch. 34's sibling rule, and the text does not rank them.
How this app decides favourable or testing
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Venus is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or a Friendly sign and is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The 3rd is outside them, so dignity decides. For signs Venus neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine combines Venus's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation read from where that lord sits: in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus it is a temporary friend.
- Always favourable: Leo and Pisces rising (own sign) and Capricorn rising (exalted).
- Never favourable: Cancer rising, Venus debilitated in Virgo.
- Favourable if Mercury or Saturn sits well from Venus: Aries, Scorpio and Sagittarius rising; otherwise Neutral.
- Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Virgo, Libra and Aquarius rising.
- At best Neutral: Taurus and Gemini rising, with Venus in a sign of the Moon or the Sun. For Gemini rising the Sun is always within two signs of Venus, so Leo reads Neutral unless the Sun is in Leo as well.
In the engine sample, 10,095 charts had Venus in the 3rd and 53.5 per cent printed the favourable line; the dasha verdict followed it exactly. The test is narrower than the texts. It does not ask whether Jupiter aspects Venus, as Saravali Ch. 34 does, or where the 3rd lord and Mars sit, as BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 5-6 do. A testing line means Venus lacks dignity, and the sibling verses are a separate question.
The aspect from the 3rd falls on the 9th
Venus has only the full 7th-sign aspect of BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5, and from the 3rd it falls on the 9th house, the house of fortune, dharma and the father. The engine's aspectedHouses() returns the 9th and nothing else. This is the aspect the app's favourable line has in mind when it speaks of prosperity "through Venus' own aspect". The Bhrigu Sutras' Note (p. 90) states that result only for Virgo and Aquarius rising, where Venus rules the 9th; for other Lagnas the line is reported here as the app's wording. For what the 9th holds, see the 9th house.
The aspect also counts in the strength calculation: in the engine's Shad Bala, Venus's aspect is a benefic aspect for any planet sitting in your 9th. In the other direction, the 3rd house itself is aspected by whatever sits in the 9th, by Jupiter from the 7th or 11th, by Mars from the 12th or 8th and by Saturn from the 1st or 6th. Saravali's one named pairing for this placement, Jupiter aspecting Venus in the 3rd, means Jupiter in the 7th, 9th or 11th.
Strength and the Kendra flag
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 puts Venus's full directional strength in the 4th, and the 3rd is next to it. In the worked chart below the Shad Bala calculator gave Venus 3.33 of 4 directional points, more than it can earn from the 1st or 2nd. Combustion is the usual weakness: within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde, the engine zeroes Venus's position score, which happened in 14.9 per cent of the sample. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays when combust; the engine does not.
The engine's Mild Kendradhipathya flag, raised when a benefic owns an angle but not the 1st, appears with Venus in the 3rd for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius rising. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 overrides it for Capricorn and Aquarius, where Venus rules a trine as well. Read it as a note about lordship, not a second verdict on the placement.
Timing: a placement BPHS treats with two voices
Venus's Vimshottari Mahadasha is twenty years long (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 describe a favourable period for a Venus in exaltation, its own sign, an angle or a trine, and Sl. 83-84 an unfavourable one for the 6th, 8th or 12th; the 3rd is in neither list, so dignity decides between them. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20, which the Sun Mahadasha page also covers, say the dashas of the 3rd, 6th and 11th lords and of grahas placed in those houses prove unfavourable. A Venus in the 3rd is a graha placed there, so this sloka applies to it as written. The sub-period chapters, on the other hand, list the 3rd again and again with the angles, trines and the 11th as a good house for an Antardasha lord, with a strength condition attached. Both statements are in one book. BPHS does not reconcile them, and neither does this page.
Transits are counted from the Moon in the Gochar calculator. In this engine's transit rule, Venus, Jupiter and Mercury passing the 3rd from the Moon are marked indifferent, while the hard planets there are marked favourable. It is the Upachaya idea again, and here it is explicit: for transits through the 3rd, the engine treats the soft planets as neither help nor hindrance.
A worked chart
The figures below are this app's engine output for a birth at 05:30 IST on 14 February 2001 in New Delhi. They illustrate the rules, and are not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Capricorn 3.47 deg |
| Venus | Pisces 14.91 deg (Uttara Bhadrapada), 3rd house, exalted, direct |
| 3rd lord (Jupiter) | Taurus 8.03 deg, 5th house, with Saturn |
| Mars | Scorpio 5.70 deg, own sign, 11th house |
| Moon | Libra 17.89 deg (Swati), 10th house |
| House line | Favourable: "determined effort and, through Venus' own aspect, real prosperity..." |
| Dasha verdict / quality | Favourable / good |
| Strength | 15.96 of 20, Strong: position 10, direction 3.33 |
| Doshas | Kendradhipathya, Mild (Venus owns the 10th but not the 1st) |
| Venus Mahadasha | From 18 Dec 2062 |
Here the engine and most of the classical conditions point the same way. Venus is exalted, so the favourable line and a good dasha quality follow directly. For Capricorn rising Venus rules the 5th and 10th, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 call it the only planet able to give a superior Yoga; the Kendradhipathya flag is the rule-of-thumb note that Sl. 13 overrides. The 3rd lord, Jupiter, sits in the 5th, a trine, which is one of the positions Ch. 14 Sl. 6 counts for happiness in sibling matters. Mars, the house's significator, is in its own sign. The 3rd is Pisces, a benefic's sign, holding a benefic, the Saravali Ch. 34 case for happiness from co-born.
What is not met is just as clear. Jupiter in the 5th aspects the 9th, the 11th and the 1st, not the 3rd, so Saravali's named pairing is absent, and the engine records no aspect on Venus at all. The two Ch. 24 slokas pull differently: Sl. 111 gives the 10th lord in the 3rd happiness from brothers and truthfulness, while Sl. 51 calls the 5th lord there miserly and given to carrying tales. And the Venus Mahadasha, by the engine's timeline, does not begin until December 2062. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 would call that period unfavourable for a graha in the 3rd; the sub-period chapters would call an exalted Venus in the 3rd a good Antardasha lord. Both readings are written down; neither can be dropped.
One more rule can be applied by hand. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie the timing of a dasha lord's effects to its decanate: the first ten degrees of a sign at the start of the period, the middle ten in the middle, the last ten at the end, reversed for a retrograde planet. Venus here is at 14.91 degrees and direct, in the middle decanate, so by that rule its effects would come forward in the middle years of its Mahadasha. That is a coarse rule from the text, not a date the engine computes.
Checking a Venus in the 3rd in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 3rd if it is in the third sign from your Ascendant.
- Find Venus's dignity, and for a non-dignified sign, where that sign's lord sits from Venus.
- Find the two houses Venus rules and read both Ch. 24 slokas in the table above.
- Find the 3rd lord and Mars. Are they in an angle, a trine or exaltation (Ch. 14 Sl. 6), or together in the 8th (Sl. 5)?
- Does Jupiter aspect Venus from the 7th, 9th or 11th (Saravali Ch. 34)? Is the 3rd a benefic's sign?
- Weigh strength first, as Ch. 14 Sl. 15 and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 require. The Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators give two measures, and the Drekkana (D3) calculator shows the division BPHS reads for co-born.
- Note when the Venus periods run, and keep the transit frame, counted from the Moon, separate.
The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.
Common misreadings
- "The 3rd is good for malefics, so it is bad for Venus." The texts say malefics do well here; no verse cited here says benefics do badly, though the Bhrigu Sutras' Note does not count Venus good here. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 counts a benefic in the 3rd as giving co-born and courage.
- "Venus in the 3rd makes a person lazy." Saravali reports little enthusiasm, but the Bhrigu Sutras report success through determined effort. The two sources lean differently.
- "Venus in the 3rd means sisters." BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 4 reads female planets in the 3rd as younger sisters and then requires strength to be weighed. This app computes no siblings.
- "The app says favourable, so the Venus dasha will be good." BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 call the dashas of grahas in the 3rd unfavourable, while the sub-period chapters treat the 3rd as a good position. The engine applies neither rule.
- "An exalted Venus in the 3rd is wasted." For Capricorn rising it is the Yoga Karaka in a growing house, aspecting the 9th.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Venus in the 3rd house good or bad?
- Mixed in the sources. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 counts a benefic in the 3rd as giving co-born and courage; Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 64 gives happiness and wealth with little enthusiasm; the Bhrigu Sutras give success through determined effort, a careful attitude to money and a good number of siblings.
- Why do the texts favour malefics in the 3rd but not Venus?
- The rule is stated for malefics: the 3rd is an Upachaya, and the Bhrigu Sutras commentary says natural malefics there give good results. The texts do not extend that rule to benefics either way; Saravali is lukewarm about Venus and Jupiter here without giving a reason.
- What does Venus aspect from the 3rd house?
- Only the 9th house, the house of fortune and dharma. The app's favourable line refers to that aspect; the Bhrigu Sutras' Note states it for Virgo and Aquarius rising only.
- Does Venus in the 3rd say anything about sisters?
- BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 4 reads female planets in the 3rd as younger sisters and requires strength to be assessed before declaring it. Saravali Ch. 34 adds that Jupiter's aspect on Venus in the 3rd increases happiness from co-born. This app does not compute any of it.
- Which rising signs give the strongest Venus in the 3rd?
- By dignity, Leo and Pisces (own sign) and Capricorn (exalted). By lordship, Capricorn, where Venus is Yoga Karaka, and Leo, where it rules the 3rd and 10th. Pisces carries the 3rd-and-8th lordship BPHS Ch. 34 calls specifically harmful.
- Is the Venus dasha good for a Venus in the 3rd?
- BPHS speaks with two voices: Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 call the dashas of grahas in the 3rd unfavourable, while the sub-period chapters list the 3rd as a good position for a strong lord. The app judges the period by Venus's dignity only.
- Is natal Venus in the 3rd the same as Venus transiting my 3rd?
- No. The transit is counted from the Moon and is marked indifferent for Venus. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant. Neighbouring placements are on the Venus in the 2nd and Venus in the 4th pages.
