What the classical texts say about Venus in the 2nd house; why the 2nd lord and the 11th lord matter as much as Venus; how your rising sign changes the reading; and how this app decides whether your Venus in the 2nd reads as favourable.

Of all twelve placements, Venus in the 2nd is the one the classical sources describe most consistently. BPHS says a benefic in the house of wealth gives wealth. Saravali gives abundant food, drink and wealth with good speech. The Bhrigu Sutras give wealth, a family, good food and attractive eyes. Three books, one direction. What they do not agree on is how much the occupant decides, and BPHS in particular keeps sending the reader back to two other planets: the lord of the 2nd and the lord of the 11th.

This page lays out those statements with their sources, the conditions they carry, and how this app's engine produces the line you see for your own chart. It describes rules, not your future. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house in full, the 2nd house, Dhana Bhava.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Nothing here is a statement about anyone's money, and this app computes no net worth from a chart.

Dhana, Artha, Kutumba: what the 2nd house holds

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3 lists the house: wealth, grains and food, family, metals and precious stones, and two harder words, death and enemies, which belong to the Marak classification. Ch. 13 Sl. 12-13 add the eyes and, with malefics on the house and its lord, untruthfulness. Saravali Ch. 3 gives the house three names, Artha and Dhana for means and wealth and Kutumba for the household. So the family reading is not a modern softening of a money house. It is in the name.

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 makes the 2nd a Panaphara, a succedent house: not an angle, not a trine, not a dusthana. A neutral, supporting house, which is why BPHS judges it mostly through its lord. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 32 attaches one timing line to that group: planets in Panapharas give their effects in middle age. This page treats that as an observation about emphasis, not a dating rule.

Venus is at home in this list in a way most planets are not. Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13 (p. 21) put diamonds, ornaments, marriage, scents, friends, wreaths and females under Venus. BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 judge marriage, enjoyments and conveyance from it. Food, precious things, the family table and pleasant speech sit naturally beside those. The sources' agreement on this placement is partly an agreement between the planet's nature and the house's.

What the three texts say

BPHS Ch. 13: the benefic in Dhana

BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 contain two separate tests. The first is where the 2nd lord sits: in the 2nd, an angle or a trine it promotes wealth; in the 6th, 8th or 12th, finances decline. The second is what kind of planet sits in the house: "A benefic in Dhan will give wealth, while a malefic instead will destroy wealth." Venus is a natural benefic, so the second half of that sloka is met by the placement alone. The first half is about a different planet unless Venus is also the 2nd lord, which happens only for Aries and Virgo rising.

Venus is named again further on. Sl. 5 lists the 2nd lord in an angle with the 11th lord in a trine from it, or aspected by or joined with Jupiter and Venus. Sl. 9 builds a combination around this exact placement: Jupiter in the 11th, Venus in the 2nd, a benefic in the 12th and the 2nd lord with a benefic. Its reading is not loss but expenses on religious or charitable grounds. Money goes out, to a purpose the text approves of. It is the one Ch. 13 sloka that names Venus in the 2nd directly, and what it describes is spending, not hoarding.

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 63

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 63 (p. 104): "abundant food, drinks and wealth, will derive excellent pleasures, be endowed with good speech and will amass great wealth". Saravali is harsh about Mars (Sl. 27) and qualified about Saturn (Sl. 75) in the same house, and reads the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus well here. The Venus verse is the plainest of the four. It carries no condition and no cost.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 14-19

Sutras 14-19 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 88, corpus line 3501): wealthy, a family, good food, attractive eyes, humble, kind-hearted and helpful; a beautiful wife in the 32nd year. If the 2nd lord is weak or in the 6th, 8th or 12th, eye troubles; if Venus is also with the Moon in that case, night blindness, no family and squandered wealth. The commentator (p. 88) calls Venus in its own sign or exaltation here, for Aries, Virgo and Aquarius rising, "very powerful Dhana yogas". Of the authorities quoted (pp. 88-89), Brihat Jatak gives eloquence, Phaldeepika wealth from many sources and poetry, Chamatkar Chintamani sweet speech, intelligence and good appearance; the Note finds a consensus that Venus is very beneficial here, with the sutras' evil cases kept in view. The temperament words are worth noticing. Where Saravali gives Venus in the Ascendant a timid nature, the Bhrigu text gives Venus in the 2nd a humble and helpful one, which is close to what BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 10 says of a dignified 2nd lord: the person looks after their people and helps others.

This app's pair of lines from that chapter are: favourable, "wealth and family happiness - a genuine wealth combination in several charts"; testing, "eye strain and reduced family harmony under real affliction". The testing line borrows the eyes from Ch. 13 Sl. 12, where a weak or badly placed 2nd lord is read through the eyes. That is a classical association, not a diagnosis, and nothing in a chart replaces an eye examination.

Why the occupant is not the whole answer

BPHS rarely calls a chart wealthy or poor on the 2nd house alone. Every poverty sloka in Ch. 13 (Sl. 6-8) turns on the 2nd lord and the 11th lord together. Sl. 6-7 first ask for both in evil houses with a malefic in the 2nd, which a Venus alone in the 2nd cannot supply; but their second clause, both lords combust or with malefics, and Sl. 8, both lords in the 6th, 8th or 12th with Mars in the 11th and Rahu in the 2nd, can still form beside a Venus there. The wealth combinations of Sl. 3-5 lean on the two lords too, and the 11th, the house of gains, is never far from any of them.

Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 add the general rule for every house: it prospers when joined or aspected by a benefic, and is harmed when its lord sits with a malefic or with the lord of the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th, or when the lord is not aspecting it. A Venus in the 2nd satisfies the first clause. It says nothing about the second. Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 widen the frame further: "wealth from Hora", the second divisional chart, is read as well as the birth chart.

Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules

Houses here are whole signs from the Ascendant, so Venus in the 2nd sits in the sign after your rising sign. That fixes its natural dignity and the two houses it rules. If you do not know your Lagna, the Lagna calculator finds it; without a birth time there are no houses to read.

Dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; lordship is arithmetic from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 condensed from the text. Left out of the cells: Sl. 2 and 74 many wives; Sl. 14 two or more wives, no progeny; Sl. 26 corpulent, an eye on others' wives; Sl. 38 cunning; Sl. 50 attached to the spouse; Sl. 98 sensuous.

Three rows stand out. Aquarius rising gives the cleanest case: Venus exalted, ruling the 4th and 9th, which BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 41-42 call the one planet that gives Raja Yoga for that Lagna, with two warm Ch. 24 slokas. Pisces rising is the reverse on every count: a neutral sign, the 3rd and 8th lordships, which Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 call malefic, and two of the least generous slokas in the chapter. Leo rising splits down the middle, a debilitated Venus whose 10th lordship brings one of the warmest lines and whose 3rd lordship brings one of the coolest.

Aries and Virgo rising: Venus rules the house it occupies

For these two Lagnas Venus is the 2nd lord sitting in the 2nd in its own sign. That meets Ch. 13 Sl. 1 (the lord in its own house promotes wealth) and Sl. 10 (the lord in its own sign or exalted, and the person looks after their people and becomes known), and Ch. 24 Sl. 14 reads the 2nd lord in the 2nd as wealthy and proud. It is the strongest 2nd-house reading this page can assemble from the sources.

The same lordship carries the caution the texts attach to the 2nd and 7th. BPHS Ch. 34 lists Venus as a maraka for both Lagnas, and Ch. 47 Sl. 88-89, which the Venus Mahadasha page also covers, give physical pains and troubles in the dasha of a Venus that rules the 2nd or 7th. For Aries rising Venus rules both. Maraka is a technical class from the longevity chapters; this app computes no lifespan and does not use it, and it is named here only because the texts put it beside the wealth reading.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints Venus's favourable 2nd-house line when Venus is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign, and the house is not a dusthana. The 2nd never is, so dignity alone decides. For signs Venus neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine combines the natural relation with the temporary one read from your chart, as BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 describe. Mercury and Saturn are Venus's natural friends, the Sun and Moon its enemies, Mars and Jupiter neutral; a sign lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.

  • Always favourable: Aries and Virgo rising (Venus in its own Taurus or Libra) and Aquarius rising (Venus exalted in Pisces).
  • Never favourable: Leo rising, with Venus debilitated in Virgo.
  • Favourable if Mercury or Saturn is well placed from Venus: Taurus, Sagittarius and Capricorn rising. Otherwise the sign reads Neutral.
  • Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter alone: Libra, Scorpio and Pisces rising.
  • At best Neutral: Gemini and Cancer rising, where the Moon or the Sun owns Venus's sign. For Cancer rising, the Sun sits within two signs of Venus, so Leo reads Neutral unless the Sun is in Leo too.

In 10,112 sample charts with Venus in the 2nd, those rules printed the favourable line 53.1 per cent of the time. The dasha verdict matched it exactly, because the Lagna clause that lifts a Venus in the 1st does not apply here. The engine's test is narrower than BPHS: it does not look at the 2nd lord, the 11th lord, Jupiter in the 11th or aspects on the house, all of which Ch. 13 asks for. A testing line means Venus lacks dignity, nothing more.

The aspect: Venus looks at the 8th

BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give Venus one aspect, the 7th from itself. From the 2nd it falls on the 8th house, and the engine's aspectedHouses() returns that and nothing else. The 2nd and 8th face each other across the chart, and Ch. 24 Sl. 20 reads the 2nd lord in the 8th as abundant land and wealth while Ch. 13 calls the same placement a decline: BPHS disagrees with itself on that axis. None of the texts cited here states a separate result for Venus aspecting the 8th from the 2nd, so this page gives none. For the house itself, see the 8th house.

One rule looks as though it involves Venus here and does not. Kalanidhi Yog, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 31-32, needs Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th aspected by Mercury and Venus. A Venus in the 2nd cannot aspect the 2nd, so it cannot be one of the two aspecting planets for a Jupiter in the same house. With Jupiter in the 5th, Venus would have to sit in the 11th.

Strength and the flags beside it

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives Venus full directional strength in the 4th and none in the 10th. The 2nd is two houses from the 4th, and in the worked chart below the Shad Bala calculator gave Venus 2.67 of 4 directional points. Combustion counts against it as in every house: the engine marks Venus combust within 10 degrees of the Sun, 8 when retrograde, and the sample had Venus combust 15.0 per cent of the time. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays when combust; the engine does not.

The Kendradhipathya flag, the engine's Mild dosha for a benefic owning an angle but not the 1st, appears with Venus in the 2nd for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, the Lagnas where Venus rules the 4th, 7th or 10th. It is a statement about Venus's lordship, not its placement, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 overrides it for Capricorn and Aquarius, where Venus also rules a trine.

Timing: Venus periods, the Rasi dashas, and transits

In the Vimshottari scheme Venus runs a twenty-year Mahadasha (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15) and an Antardasha inside every other. Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 judge a dasha lord by dignity and by whether it sits in a dusthana, and the 2nd is not one. The sub-period chapters from Ch. 52 onward repeatedly list a sub-period lord placed "in a Kendr, Trikon, in Dhan, or Labh" (Ch. 60, line 7613) among the good positions, so occupying the 2nd is supportive in that formula. Ruling it is another matter: the same chapters flag a lord of Dhan or Yuvati for bodily distress, which brings back the Aries and Virgo caution above. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your Venus dates.

One timing passage names this placement directly, and it belongs to a different system. BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 51-52, on the sign-based dashas, read Venus and the Moon in the 2nd at the commencement of a period as "acquisition of a kingdom". This site's 2nd house page is careful to add that these slokas belong to the Rasi dashas, not to Vimshottari, and should not be carried across. This page repeats the caution: it is a real statement about Venus in the 2nd, inside a scheme this page is not otherwise using.

For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon. Venus passing the 2nd from the Moon is one of the favourable positions in the benefic rule the engine applies, with the 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th. So here the natal reading and the transit reading happen to point the same way, which is not true for every house. They remain different frames: one is counted from the Ascendant and lasts a lifetime, the other from the Moon and lasts a few weeks.

Why Neutral: Leo belongs to the Sun, a natural enemy of Venus. The Sun in Gemini is the 12th sign from Venus's Leo, a temporary-friend position, and enmity plus temporary friendship comes out Neutral. Neutral is not on the engine's strong list, so the testing line prints. For a Cancer Lagna that is the best Venus in the 2nd can do; with the Sun in Leo beside it, the result would have been Enemy sign.

The texts look elsewhere, and find a mixed picture. The 2nd lord is the Sun, in the 12th: Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 read that as declining finances and Ch. 24 Sl. 24 as short of wealth. But the poverty combinations of Sl. 6-7 need the 11th lord in an evil house too, and the 11th lord here is Venus itself, sitting in the 2nd. They also need a malefic in the 2nd, and Venus is a benefic. So the harsh Ch. 13 readings are not met. Venus rules the 4th and 11th from Cancer, and both Ch. 24 lines for those lords in the 2nd, Sl. 38 and Sl. 122, are among the warmest. Against that, Mars and Saturn both aspect the 2nd, malefic aspects the engine records in its strength reasons.

The Moon in Ashlesha starts life in Mercury's Mahadasha, and the Venus Mahadasha runs from age 19 to 39. For this chart the dasha panel would list the themes for the 4th, "gains in property, home comforts and vehicles", and the 11th, "gains that come with some obstacles", beside a testing summary. The two kinds of line are not in conflict. One reports Venus's dignity, the other the houses it rules.

Two more classical rules can be applied to this chart by hand. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 say a dasha lord in the first ten degrees of its sign shows its effects at the beginning of its period; Venus at 5.95 degrees of Leo is in that first third and is direct, so by that rule the placement would come forward early in the 2013-2033 period rather than late. And Saravali Ch. 28, which describes Venus by sign rather than by house, gives Venus in Leo wealth and happiness, affection from relatives and a helpful nature, and then adds that the person is unhappy in spite of comfort. Set beside the Bhrigu Sutras' humble and helpful Venus in the 2nd, the sign verse and the house verse agree on helpfulness and part company on contentment.

The sign verses for the strongest cases

Saravali Ch. 28 is worth reading beside the house verse for the three signs that always print the favourable line. For Taurus (Aries rising) it gives agriculture, scents, garlands and fine robes, charity and support of relatives. For Libra (Virgo rising) it gives hard-earned money, fine dress, protection of one's own people and fortune, along with a life abroad. For Pisces (Aquarius rising) it gives courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech and wisdom, and a person who keeps promises. Each of the three repeats a 2nd-house theme, whether family support, wealth or speech, in its own terms. Saravali Ch. 28 Sl. 3-4, 13-14 and 23-24 (pp. 91-93) are condensed here; their lines on many wives and the like are not repeated.

Checking a Venus in the 2nd in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 2nd if it occupies the sign after your rising sign.
  2. Find Venus's dignity, and for a friend's, neutral's or enemy's sign, where that sign's lord sits from Venus.
  3. Find your 2nd lord and 11th lord. Are they in the 2nd, an angle or a trine (Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2), or both in the 6th, 8th or 12th (Sl. 6-7)? Have they exchanged houses (Sl. 4)?
  4. Is Jupiter in the 11th, with a benefic in the 12th? That is the Sl. 9 pattern built on Venus in the 2nd.
  5. Read the two Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Venus rules, from the rising-sign table.
  6. Check strength in the Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators, and the wealth division in the Hora (D2) calculator.
  7. Look up your Venus periods, and keep transit readings separate from this natal one.

For money and work read together with dashas and transits, see the Career and Money view. The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books.

Common misreadings

  • "Venus in the 2nd means I will be rich." The sources lean that way, but BPHS judges the 2nd through its lord and the 11th lord, and this app computes no wealth figure from any chart.
  • "The app says testing, so my finances are afflicted." The testing line means only that Venus lacks dignity in the engine's test. It does not check the two lords Ch. 13 relies on.
  • "Venus in the 2nd forms Kalanidhi Yoga." Kalanidhi needs Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th aspected by Venus, which a Venus in the 2nd cannot do for a Jupiter beside it.
  • "Ch. 50 says Venus in the 2nd brings a great gain." It names Venus and the Moon together in the 2nd at the start of a period in the sign-based dashas, and the result does not carry over to Vimshottari.
  • "Own-sign Venus in the 2nd is pure good news." For Aries and Virgo rising it is the strongest wealth reading, and also the maraka lordship the texts handle with care.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venus in the 2nd house good?
The three sources read it favourably: BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 say a benefic in the 2nd gives wealth, Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 63 gives abundant food, drink and wealth with good speech, and the Bhrigu Sutras give wealth, family and good food. BPHS still judges the house through its lord and the 11th lord.
Does Venus in the 2nd give wealth through marriage?
Not by itself. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 74 reads the 7th lord in the 2nd as gaining wealth through the spouse, so it applies when Venus rules your 7th, which happens for Aries and Scorpio rising.
Why does the app mention eye strain for Venus in the 2nd?
BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 12 ties the eyes to the 2nd lord, and the app's testing line carries that association. It is a classical association, not a diagnosis, and appears only when Venus lacks dignity in the engine's test.
What does Venus aspect from the 2nd house?
Only the 8th house, by its 7th-sign aspect (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). The texts cited here state no separate result for that aspect.
Which rising signs give the strongest Venus in the 2nd?
By dignity, Aries and Virgo (own sign) and Aquarius (exalted). By lordship, Aquarius stands out, with Venus ruling the 4th and 9th. Aries and Virgo add the 2nd-lord-in-the-2nd reading and the maraka caution together.
When does a Venus in the 2nd show its effects?
Classically in the Venus Mahadasha and Antardashas. Saravali says planets in succedent houses act in middle age, as a general observation. This app shows when the periods run; it does not predict events in them.
Is Venus in the 2nd from my Moon the same thing?
No. Natal houses are counted from the Ascendant; transit houses in the Gochar calculator are counted from the Moon. See the Venus in the 1st house and Venus in the 3rd house pages for the neighbouring placements.
