The 8th house is the one most people are afraid to ask about. The classical texts make it the house of the length of life, and because a span has an end, later writers started calling it the house of death. Its Sanskrit name is less dramatic. Randhra means an opening, a gap or a weak point, and Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) uses that name throughout, spelt Randhr. It is the eighth sign counted from your Lagna.
This page sets out what the texts actually say about the house, sloka by sloka, and how this app computes it. The main source is BPHS, which gives the house its own chapter (Ch. 19) and twelve slokas on its lord (Ch. 24). The Bhrigu Sutras are used for the planets placed in it, and Saravali for its names. Where the sources disagree, the disagreement is shown. Where they are silent, so is this page. To follow along, open your chart in the birth chart calculator. You need a birth time, because houses do not exist without an Ascendant.
A note on longevity content
Almost everything the classical texts say about this house concerns how long a person lives. This page reports that material as a record of what the texts contain and how their rules are built. It is not a prediction about your life, and it is not medical advice. This app deliberately does not calculate a lifespan or time a death, and nothing here should be read as doing so.
What the 8th house signifies
BPHS defines the house in one sloka, Ch. 11 Sl. 9: Randhr Bhava indicates longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and 'things that have happened and are to happen', which the translator glosses as past and future births. Only the first of the six is what the house is famous for. The wealth of the dead is what later writers call inheritance. The last item is the root of the house's reputation for hidden or occult knowledge.
Saravali's Rasi chapter (Sl. 26-27) gives the house two names of its own: Vinasa, destruction, and Dehavivara, an opening of the body. The second is close in sense to Randhra. BPHS Ch. 29, listing the twelve Arudhas, calls the 8th house's Arudha the Maran Pad, the pada of death. So the classical names agree on a theme of endings and vulnerable points, and none of them names transformation, the word most modern readers attach to the house.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary in this corpus gives the long list in circulation today: longevity, 'also called house of death (because end of longevity is death)'; inheritance, legacies, wills, insurance, pension and gratuity; accidents; misery, misfortune, sorrow, strife, worries, disgrace, delay, dejection, disappointment, defeat, loss and obstruction; theft and robbery; chronic diseases. Insurance, pensions and gratuity are plainly modern extensions of 'the wealth of the dead'. Chronic disease and accidents are not in Parashara's sloka at all. This page reports both lists and does not merge them.
| Source | What it places in the 8th house |
|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 | Longevity, battle, enemies, forts, wealth of the dead, things past and to come |
| BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 1-15 | Long, medium and short life (the subject of the whole chapter) |
| BPHS Ch. 29 | The Arudha of this house is named Maran Pad |
| Saravali, Rasi chapter Sl. 26-31 | Names only: Vinasa (destruction), Dehavivara; a Caturasra house |
| Bhrigu Sutras, house significations | Longevity, inheritance and legacies, insurance and pension, accidents, misfortune, delay, defeat, loss, obstruction, theft, chronic diseases |
| This app (house card title) | 'Transformation', with the short line 'longevity, hidden matters, change' |
Three labels at once: Dusthana, Panaphara, Chaturasra
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 sorts the twelve houses into groups, and the 8th falls into three of them in the same passage. It is a Panaphara, a succedent house, with the 2nd, 5th and 11th. It is a Dusthan, an 'evil Bhava', with the 6th and the 12th. And it is a Chaturasra, a label it shares only with the 4th. Saravali's Rasi chapter (Sl. 28-31) gives the same pair as its Caturasra houses.
- Dusthana or Trika. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 calls the 6th, 8th and 12th the Trikas and states the consequence plainly: 'association with Trikas will inflict evils', while Kendras and trines turn 'even evil into auspiciousness'. This is the rule behind most of the difficult readings on this page.
- Panaphara. The practical consequence is strength, not meaning. In BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 a planet in a Panaphara receives half of the positional strength called Kendradi Bal, against a quarter in a cadent house. So a planet in the 8th is positionally stronger than one in the 6th or 12th, even though all three are Dusthanas.
- Chaturasra. Neither BPHS nor Saravali explains what follows from this label in the passages that give it. This page therefore records the name and draws no conclusion from it.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary goes further than Parashara and ranks the three: 'Eighth house is the worst Dusthana.' Its reasoning, given under Moon and Mars in the 8th, is positional. The 8th is the 12th house, the house of loss, counted from the 9th, which stands for fortune and the father. BPHS makes the same count in Ch. 34: 'Randhr's Lord is not auspicious, as he owns the 12th from Dharm Bhava.' That single derivation, loss of fortune, is the stated classical reason the house is treated as difficult.
The same chapter that ends the 8th's reputation also contains its most reassuring rule. BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 names the 3rd and the 8th as 'the two Bhavas of longevity'. The houses of death in Parashara's scheme are the 12th from each of those, the 2nd and the 7th, which he calls the Marak Bhavas. So in the primary source the 8th is the house of life's length, and the label 'house of death' belongs more properly to its neighbour, the 7th, and to the 2nd.
Which planet rules your 8th house
The 8th lord is the ruler of the eighth sign from the Lagna. This follows from the sign rulerships alone, so it is fixed for each Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign if you do not know it. The third column is the same planet's other house, because BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 makes the second lordship decisive.
| Lagna | 8th sign | 8th lord | Also rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Scorpio | Mars | 1st (Lagna) |
| Taurus | Sagittarius | Jupiter | 11th |
| Gemini | Capricorn | Saturn | 9th (a Kona) |
| Cancer | Aquarius | Saturn | 7th |
| Leo | Pisces | Jupiter | 5th (a Kona) |
| Virgo | Aries | Mars | 3rd |
| Libra | Taurus | Venus | 1st (Lagna) |
| Scorpio | Gemini | Mercury | 11th |
| Sagittarius | Cancer | Moon | none |
| Capricorn | Leo | Sun | none |
| Aquarius | Virgo | Mercury | 5th (a Kona) |
| Pisces | Libra | Venus | 3rd |
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 gives four rules for reading this table. First, the effects of the 8th and 12th lords 'will depend on their association', meaning the planet takes its colour from whatever it is joined with. Second, the 8th lord is not auspicious in itself. Third, if the 8th lord also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th it 'will prove specifically harmful', while ownership of a Kona at the same time 'will bestow auspicious effects'. Fourth: 'Randhr's lordship of Surya and Candr is not evil.' So for Sagittarius and Capricorn Ascendants the text removes the blemish outright, and for Gemini, Leo and Aquarius it is offset by a trine.
Aries and Libra are the special case, since the 8th lord is also the Lagna lord, and the same passage calls the Lagna lord 'specially auspicious'. Parashara addresses Aries directly in Sl. 19-22: 'Even though Mangal is the Lord of Randhr Bhava, he will be helpful to auspicious Grahas.' The principle he states just before applies: a planet owning a predominant house stalls the effects due to its lesser house and gives its own results.
How BPHS judges the 8th house (Ch. 19)
Ch. 19 has fifteen slokas and a single subject, the length of life. It never mentions inheritance, accidents, secrets or sudden events. What follows is the structure of the chapter. The ages and the infant combinations it contains are noted but not applied, for the reason given at the top of this page.
- Sl. 1, the opening rule. If the 8th lord is in an angle (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th), long life is indicated. A Dusthana lord in a Kendra is good news for the house's own subject.
- Sl. 2. If the 8th lord joins the Lagna lord or a malefic and sits in the 8th itself, the reading is short life. Sl. 3 says to consider Saturn and the 10th lord in the same way.
- Sl. 4-7, the long-life combinations. The 6th lord in the 12th; the 6th lord in the 6th with the 12th lord in the 12th; the 6th and 12th lords in the Lagna and the 8th. Then: the lords of the 5th, 8th and 1st in their own Navamsas, own signs or friendly signs. Then: the lords of the 1st, 8th and 10th, and Saturn, each in an angle, a trine or the 11th.
- Sl. 7 closes with the method: 'there are many other Yogas' on longevity, and 'the strength and weakness of the Grahas concerned be estimated'. No single placement settles the question.
- Sl. 8-13, the short-life combinations. Their common pattern is three things failing together: the 8th lord in its fall, a malefic in the 8th, and the Lagna 'bereft of strength'. Several of these slokas describe death in infancy and give ages; this page does not reproduce them.
- Sl. 14-15, long life again. The Lagna lord exalted with the Moon in the 11th and Jupiter in the 8th; or a very strong Lagna lord aspected by a benefic placed in an angle, which makes the person 'wealthy, virtuous and long-lived'.
The chapter contradicts itself on purpose. Sl. 1 says the 8th lord in an angle gives long life, and Sl. 8 says the same placement gives a short one 'if Lagn's Lord is weak'. The condition of the Lagna lord is what turns the reading, which is why the 1st house page matters as much to this subject as the 8th does. Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 makes the link from the other side: if the Lagna lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, 'physical felicity will diminish'.
The longevity chapters that lean on the 8th
Parashara returns to the subject at length in Ch. 43, and the 8th lord is one of his working parts. Sl. 33-40 pair the lords of the Lagna and the 8th and classify life as long, medium or short by whether the pair occupies movable, fixed or dual signs; the same test is repeated for Saturn with the Moon and for the Lagna with the Hora Lagna. Sl. 71-73 take the stronger of the Lagna lord and the 8th lord: in a Kendra, long life; in a Panaphara, medium; in an Apoklima, short. Sl. 62 gives full life when three planets are exalted, the Lagna and 8th lords among them, and the 8th holds no malefic. Sl. 63 gives long life for three planets in the 8th in exaltation, own or friendly divisions with a strong Lagna lord. Sl. 78 says that if the two lords lack dignity and strength the life is short, but 'helped by others' it becomes medium.
The 8th lord in each of the twelve houses
BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 85-96 gives one sloka for the 8th lord in each house. The table paraphrases them. Clauses about wives, about named dangers in childhood, and words that brand the person a thief or a betrayer are left out: they are verdicts on character, not readings of a chart, and this app does not repeat them.
| 8th lord in | Sloka | What BPHS says (paraphrased) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 85 | Little physical felicity; wounds |
| 2nd | Sl. 86 | Little bodily vigour, a little wealth, and lost wealth is not regained |
| 3rd | Sl. 87 | Little happiness from siblings; indolence; lacking helpers and strength |
| 4th | Sl. 88 | Loss in the matters of mother, house, land and happiness |
| 5th | Sl. 89 | Dull-witted and few children, but long-lived and wealthy |
| 6th | Sl. 90 | Wins over enemies; afflicted by diseases |
| 7th | Sl. 91 | With a malefic there, a downfall in business |
| 8th | Sl. 92 | Long-lived; if the planet is weak, medium longevity |
| 9th | Sl. 93 | Turns against received religion; heterodox |
| 10th | Sl. 94 | Little paternal happiness and trouble with livelihood, but a benefic aspect means these evils will not mature |
| 11th | Sl. 95 | With a malefic: miserable early, happy later. With a benefic: long-lived |
| 12th | Sl. 96 | Spends on bad ends and a short life, more so with a malefic also there |
Read down the column and the logic of Ch. 34 shows through. The lord carries loss into whichever house it occupies: vigour in the 1st, savings in the 2nd, the home in the 4th. The exceptions are instructive. In its own house (Sl. 92) it gives long life, the house's own subject strengthened. In the 5th, a trine, the result is mixed but ends in 'long-lived and wealthy'. In the 6th the two Dusthanas partly cancel and the person wins over enemies. And three slokas, 91, 94 and 95, depend explicitly on a malefic or benefic association, exactly as Ch. 34 said they would.
Every other house lord placed in the 8th
The same chapter gives the reverse case: each other lord sitting in the 8th. These slokas are the working definition of what the house does to a planet placed in it.
| Lord of | Sloka | In the 8th house (paraphrased) |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 8 | An accomplished scholar, but sickly and quick to anger |
| 2nd | Sl. 20 | Abundant land and wealth, but limited marital happiness |
| 3rd | Sl. 32 | A livelihood from serving others |
| 4th | Sl. 44 | Short of domestic comforts and of happiness from parents |
| 5th | Sl. 56 | Not much happiness from children; given to anger |
| 6th | Sl. 68 | Sickly and inimical, wanting what belongs to others |
| 7th | Sl. 80 | Deprived of marital happiness |
| 9th | Sl. 104 | Not prosperous; little happiness from the elder brother |
| 10th | Sl. 116 | 'Devoid of acts', long-lived, inclined to blame others |
| 11th | Sl. 128 | Reversals in undertakings, but a long life |
| 12th | Sl. 140 | Always gains, speaks affably, has all good qualities, medium span of life |
Three things stand out. The 10th and 11th lords here both give a long life while harming their own houses. The 2nd lord in the 8th gives 'abundant land and wealth', which fits the house's own item, the wealth of the dead. And the best sloka of the eleven belongs to another Dusthana lord. The 12th lord in the 8th 'will always gain' (Sl. 140), a result Parashara himself gives, and the nearest thing in BPHS to the later idea that Trika lords in Trika houses turn out well.
Planets in the 8th house
For planets occupying the house, the fullest source in this corpus is the Bhrigu Sutras. Like BPHS, it is preoccupied with length of life, and it gives years. The table reports the direction of each reading and its stated exception, without the ages. Named ailments in the sutras are summarised only as 'health complaints'; they are not medical advice.
| Planet | Bhrigu Sutras reading | The stated exception |
|---|---|---|
| Sun (Sutras 75-82) | Few children, meagre wealth, chronic health complaints, yet famous | Exalted or in own sign: long-lived. 8th lord with strong planets: owns land of his choice |
| Moon | Loss of comforts; danger from watery places | In own sign or exalted: long-lived. Waning: medium span |
| Mars (66-71) | Not long-lived, health complaints, few children, but a happy married life | With a benefic: good health and long life. Strong 8th lord: full longevity |
| Mercury (57-63) | A good span of life, much land, wide fame and reputation | Turns short only if the 8th lord is debilitated and with malefics |
| Jupiter (38-43) | Short-lived and drawn to undesirable activity | In own sign or exalted: long-lived, healthy, learned and saintly |
| Venus (45-48) | Happy, a devoted spouse, yet discontented; less than medium span | In a benefic sign or with a benefic: full span of life |
| Saturn (37-40) | A long life, but poverty and a livelihood from serving others | In own sign or exalted: a still longer life |
| Rahu or Ketu (22-23) | Sickly, with a short span | With a benefic the span lengthens; with a strong or exalted 8th lord, longer again |
The commentator's notes explain the mechanics. A planet in the 8th aspects the 2nd house by its seventh aspect, so the 8th-house Sun and Mars are said to trouble eyesight, a 2nd-house matter, and Saturn there is said to bring poverty by afflicting the house of wealth. On the Moon he writes that the 8th is 'one of the most inauspicious houses' and that 'a planet loses all its good significations when posited in this house'. On Venus he adds the general rule: placement in the 8th 'will adversely affect the significations of the good house' the planet owns.
Two planets break the pattern. Mercury in the 8th is spoken of 'very well', in the commentator's words. Saturn is the famous one: 'All malefics in the 8th house shorten the longevity of the native but Saturn in this house is believed to give good longevity', though 'except for longevity Saturn in the 8th house gives only evil effects'. BPHS supplies the reason. In Ch. 32 the bhava karakas are listed in order and the eighth is Saturn. The significator of the house sitting in the house strengthens the house's subject.
Each placement has its own page with the full text and exceptions: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in the 8th house.
Named combinations that involve the 8th house
Several yogas are defined partly by this house. All of them can be checked against your own chart in the yoga calculator, and the page on what a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one.
- Lagn Adhi Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 37). Benefics in the 7th and 8th from the Lagna, free of conjunction with or aspect from malefics, make 'a great person, learned in Shastras and happy'. This is a major favourable yoga that requires benefics in the 8th.
- Parvat Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 7-8). Benefics in Kendras, with the 7th and 8th houses vacant or occupied only by benefics. The 8th's part is to stay clean of malefics.
- Raj Yogas from weak Trika lords (BPHS Ch. 39). Sl. 19: debilitated planets in the 3rd, 6th and 8th while the Lagna lord is exalted or in its own house and aspects the Lagna. Sl. 20: the 6th, 8th and 12th lords in fall, in enemy signs or combust, with the same strong Lagna lord. Sl. 28: even one of those three lords, debilitated, aspecting the Lagna. Sl. 29-31 add a debilitated planet in the 6th or 8th aspecting the Lagna.
- Sarala Yoga, one of the three Vipareeta Raja Yogas. The 8th lord placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th. This app's cross-reference is Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology, which uses the yoga in its case studies without giving a numbered definition, so the engine applies the standard formation rule.
- Combinations for penury (BPHS Ch. 42). Sl. 4, 5 and 6 all start from the Lagna lord: in the 8th while the Lagna or Moon is with Ketu; with a malefic in a Trika house while the 2nd lord is weak; or joined to a Trika lord with no benefic aspect.
- Mangal Dosha. Mars in the 8th is one of the six positions (1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 from the Lagna) that this app's Mangal Dosha calculator tests, and the engine grades the 7th and 8th as 'Moderate' where the other four are 'Mild'.
The Ch. 39 slokas and Sarala Yoga rest on one idea: a harmful house is best served by a weak or tucked-away lord. But they are not the same rule. Parashara's versions all require a strong Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna, and they ask for the Trika lord to be debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign. Sarala Yoga as coded here asks only for the 8th lord to occupy a Trika house. And for one of its three cases BPHS itself says something different: the 8th lord in the 12th is a short life in Ch. 24 Sl. 96, while the 8th lord in the 8th is a long one in Sl. 92. When the app shows Sarala Yoga, treat it as the later tradition's reading, and read the Ch. 24 sloka for the same placement alongside it.
How this app computes and reads your 8th house
- Houses are whole-sign. The sign holding your Ascendant degree is the whole 1st house, and the eighth sign from it is the whole 8th. The methodology page explains how positions are calculated.
- The house card is titled 'Transformation' with the short line 'longevity, hidden matters, change'. Only the first of those three words comes from BPHS Ch. 11. The title is the modern convention, used because it describes the house without the fear attached to the older names.
- The tone of the card (favourable, neutral or testing) comes from one thing: the dignity score of the 8th lord in the sign it occupies. A well-dignified lord reads favourable. That matches the classical method, in which a strong 8th lord supports the house's own subject.
- The house type shown is Dusthana. The engine tests Dusthana before Panaphara, so the 8th is labelled by its harder name even though it is also a succedent house.
- Planet-in-house lines come from the Bhrigu Sutras table, and here there is a limit worth knowing. The engine shows a planet's favourable line only when the planet has strong dignity and is not in a Dusthana. A planet in the 8th therefore always receives its cautionary line, for example Saturn's 'real hardship and difficulty earning a livelihood', even when it is exalted. The favourable lines, such as Mercury's 'longevity, land and a wide reputation', exist in the table but this rule does not surface them. Use the exceptions column above to read your own case.
- Sarala Yoga is detected whenever the 8th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th. Its text reads it as 'converting what would otherwise be a difficult house's energy into an unexpected source of gain, often most visible after periods of real struggle'.
- The app does not calculate a lifespan. The longevity methods of BPHS Ch. 43 and the Marak rules of Ch. 44 are not implemented, and where the sources predict death the engine's text is written without that language.
- The whole reading sits on the Kundali page described under Kundali features, and you can ask about any line of it in the AI chat, which is grounded in the same computed chart.
Three further calculators touch this house. The Shad Bala calculator gives each planet's six-fold strength, the measure Ch. 19 Sl. 7 asks for. The Bhava Padas calculator computes all twelve Arudhas, including the 8th house's (A8, the Maran Pad of BPHS Ch. 29). And the Argala calculator shows which planets intervene on each house; BPHS Ch. 31 says an unobstructed Argala bearing on the 8th denotes 'difficulties', the only house besides the 6th and 12th given a hard result in that list.
Timing: when the 8th house becomes active
A house matters most when a planet connected with it is running its period. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator shows which Mahadasha and Antardasha you are in, and what a Mahadasha is explains the system.
The dasha of the 8th lord
BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 runs through the dasha of each house lord. For the 8th lord it gives 'the possibility of death and financial losses'. Ch. 44 Sl. 6-7 says the same from the other direction: the end 'may' come in the 8th lord's dasha. Both are worded as possibilities, and both are followed at once by qualifications. This app carries over only the financial half. Its text for an 8th-lord period reads: 'major transformation and financial caution - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha'. The engine's own notes record that the death wording was removed on purpose.
The qualifications matter more than the headline. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 says the dasha of the 6th, 8th or 12th lord 'also becomes favourable, if they get associated with the Lord of a Trikon'. A planet aspected by a Kendra or Trikona lord also gives a favourable dasha. So an 8th lord conjoined with your 5th or 9th lord is, on Parashara's own rule, not a period to dread. Ch. 42 Sl. 13 gives the converse: a planet associated with a Trika lord and lacking any aspect from a Kona lord harms finances in its dasha.
The dasha of a planet placed in the 8th
Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 continues: a planet placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th at the start of its dasha 'yields only adverse results', and Sl. 18-20 repeats that the dashas of planets placed in the 8th 'will produce unfavourable effects'. Parashara adds that the placement at birth and at the commencement of the dasha should both be considered. The app applies the natal half of this. A Mahadasha lord sitting in a Dusthana is never marked favourable, whatever its dignity. Sub-periods refine the picture, as Antardasha and Pratyantar explains.
Transits through the 8th
Transits in this tradition are counted from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, so the relevant house is the eighth sign from your Moon sign. The Gochar calculator applies the source rule that the 1st, 8th and 12th from the Moon are the testing positions for every planet, benefic or malefic. For the natural benefics the note reads 'classically more testing even for a natural benefic in this position'. The Moon's own transit of the 8th from itself is flagged as one of nine intensified planet-and-house pairs in the source table.
Saturn's transit of the 8th from the Moon has its own name, Ashtama Sani. Saturn spends roughly two and a half years in a sign, so the period is long. The app describes it as 'a classically demanding transit for emotional and financial stability, traditionally read as a time to move carefully rather than take on new risk'. The source it comes from illustrates the transit with a death; that example was not carried over. Ashtama Sani is separate from Sade Sati, which covers the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon and has its own Sade Sati calculator. On a daily scale, when the Moon passes through the 8th house of your chart, the daily guidance lowers its margin for error and suggests holding major commitments. The timing features bring these layers together.
Common misreadings
- 'The 8th is the house of death.' In BPHS it is the house of longevity (Ch. 11 Sl. 9, Ch. 44 Sl. 2). The houses Parashara calls Marak are the 2nd and the 7th.
- 'A strong 8th lord is dangerous.' Ch. 19 Sl. 1 opens with the 8th lord in an angle giving long life, and Ch. 43 Sl. 71-73 grades life by the strength of the Lagna and 8th lords. Strength helps here.
- 'Planets in the 8th are ruined.' The commentator on the Bhrigu Sutras does say a planet loses its good significations there, but the same text gives Mercury land and fame, gives Saturn a long life, and attaches an exception to every other planet. BPHS builds Lagn Adhi Yog out of benefics in the 8th.
- 'The 8th lord is always a malefic influence.' Ch. 34 says its effects depend on association, exempts the Sun and Moon by name, and reverses the verdict when the planet also owns a trine.
Check it in your own chart
- Generate your chart in the birth chart calculator with an accurate birth time. If you do not have one, read what to do when the birth time is unknown first, because every house on this page depends on it.
- Find the sign in your 8th house and its lord, using the table above. Note the lord's second house: a trine softens it, the 3rd, 7th or 11th hardens it, and the Sun or Moon as 8th lord is exempt (Ch. 34).
- See which house the 8th lord occupies and read the matching sloka from Ch. 24 Sl. 85-96. Then check what it is joined with, since three of those slokas turn on a benefic or malefic companion.
- Check the lord's dignity and strength. The Shad Bala figure and its sign in the Navamsa both matter; Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7 counts the 8th lord in its own Navamsa as a point for long life.
- Do the same for the Lagna lord, then read any planets in the 8th with their stated exceptions.
- Open the yoga calculator and see whether Sarala Yoga or Mangal Dosha is listed, and why.
- Finally, look at timing: is the 8th lord, or a planet in the 8th, running its period in the Vimshottari Dasha, and is Saturn in the eighth sign from your Moon?
Questions people ask
- What does the 8th house represent in Vedic astrology?
- In BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 it indicates longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and things past and to come. Later writers, including the Bhrigu Sutras commentary, add inheritance, insurance, accidents, obstruction, loss and chronic disease. This app titles the house 'Transformation'.
- Is the 8th house the house of death?
- Not in the primary source. BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 calls the 3rd and 8th 'the two Bhavas of longevity' and names the 2nd and 7th, the twelfth from each, as the Marak or death-related houses. The 8th measures the span of life; it is not Parashara's house of death.
- Can this app tell me how long I will live?
- No. The app does not calculate a lifespan or time a death, and the classical longevity methods are deliberately not implemented. The texts themselves say many factors must be weighed (BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 7), and this page reports their rules as a record, not as a forecast.
- Is it bad to have planets in the 8th house?
- It is a Dusthana, and the general rule is that association with a Dusthana harms what the planet stands for. But the Bhrigu Sutras give Mercury there land and reputation, give Saturn a long life, and attach an improving exception to every planet, usually own sign, exaltation, a benefic companion or a strong 8th lord. BPHS forms Lagn Adhi Yog from benefics in the 7th and 8th.
- What is Sarala Yoga?
- It is the Vipareeta Raja Yoga formed when the 8th lord sits in the 6th, 8th or 12th house. This app detects it by that rule and reads it as difficulty converted into unexpected gain, most visible after real struggle. BPHS has related Raj Yogas in Ch. 39 but states them with extra conditions, and reads the 8th lord in the 12th differently in Ch. 24 Sl. 96.
- What happens in the Mahadasha of the 8th lord?
- BPHS Ch. 48 gives financial losses and the possibility of death as its headline, then says the period becomes favourable if the 8th lord is associated with a trine lord. This app shows only 'major transformation and financial caution' and judges the period mainly by the lord's dignity and house.
