The 8th is the house the classical texts treat most gravely, and Venus in the 8th is the placement where the gap between the sources is widest. Saravali says long-lived, very rich and equal to a king. The Bhrigu Sutras say happy but discontented, with the outcome turning on Venus's sign and company. BPHS counts the 8th among the three Trikas, whose association inflicts evils. This app follows the Trika rule and prints the testing line for every Venus in the 8th, which makes the app stricter than the texts here; even the Bhrigu Sutras' own commentator sides with Saravali.
This page lays the readings out side by side and follows the placement through the engine. It is a map of rules, not a forecast, and nothing on it is a statement about anyone's length of life. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 8th house, Randhra Bhava.
A note on sources and on longevity
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Most of what the texts say about the 8th concerns length of life. That material is reported as what the texts contain, without ages or spans. This app does not calculate a lifespan, and nothing here is medical advice.
The house: longevity, the wealth of the dead, and three labels
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 list the 8th house as longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and things past and to come. Saravali Ch. 3 names it Vinasa, destruction, and Dehavivara, an opening of the body, and BPHS Ch. 29 calls its Arudha the Maran Pad. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list gives the modern one: inheritance, legacies, insurance and pension, accidents, delay, loss and obstruction. "Transformation", the word the app uses on its house card, is a modern convention, not a classical name.
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 8th a Panaphara, a Dusthana and a Chaturasra. The Dusthana label carries the weight: Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 say association with the Trikas inflicts evils. The Bhrigu commentator ranks the three and calls the 8th "the worst Dusthana" (Mars in the 8th, p. 57), and BPHS Ch. 34 gives the reason by counting: the 8th is the 12th, the house of loss, from the 9th, the house of fortune. The Panaphara label has a practical effect on strength: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 give a planet there half of the positional strength called Kendradi Bala, twice what a planet in the 6th or 12th receives.
One reassuring rule sits beside all of this. BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 name the 3rd and the 8th as the two houses of longevity, and place the houses of death at the 12th from each, the 2nd and the 7th. In the primary source the 8th is the house of life's length.
Three readings of Venus in the 8th
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 69: equal to a king
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 69 (p. 104): "long-lived, will enjoy incomparable happiness, be very rich, be equal to a king and moment after moment will feel delighted". It is one of the most generous verses Saravali gives Venus in any house, and it carries no condition. Notice that it uses the house's own subject, length of life, in Venus's favour. A benefic in the house of longevity is read as strengthening it.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 45-48: happy, discontented, conditional
Sutras 45-48 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 94, corpus line 3721): happy, a devoted wife, yet discontented; the text also calls the native sickly and names a throat trouble for the mother at an age. The plain reading is a span "less than medium"; in a benefic's sign or with a benefic, a full one; with a malefic, a short one. The ages are not reproduced here. What survives the omission is the structure: the outcome turns on whose sign Venus is in and who is with it.
The commentator (p. 94) finds the sutras self-contradictory, "happy and discontented", and adds a rule that is easy to miss: placement in the 8th "will adversely affect the significations of the good house Venus owns". He also uses the mechanism common to every planet here: from the 8th a planet aspects the 2nd. Then, in his Note, he sides against the sutras. Of the authorities quoted, Brihat Jatak calls the native base, but Phaldeepika gives wealth, long life and lands, and Chamatkar Chintamani conveyances and long life with harsh speech and debt; the commentator agrees with Phaldeepika and Saravali that Venus, "only 2nd to Jupiter", improves longevity here and, aspecting the 2nd, gives wealth, and says their view "should prevail over those of Bhrigu Sutras".
BPHS: the Trika rule and Ch. 47
BPHS gives no house-specific verse for Venus in the 8th in the passages cited here. What it gives is the general Trika rule of Ch. 32 and the dasha rule of Ch. 47 Sl. 83-84: a Venus in the 6th, 8th or 12th brings strained relations with kin, losses in business and separations in its period. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 add that the dashas of planets placed in the 8th produce unfavourable effects.
| Source | What it says | Condition stated |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 69 | Long-lived, incomparable happiness, very rich, equal to a king, always delighted | None |
| Bhrigu Sutras 45-48 | Happy yet discontented, sickly, a devoted wife; span read from company | A benefic's sign or a benefic beside Venus lengthens it; a malefic shortens it |
| Bhrigu commentary | The good house Venus owns is adversely affected; yet long life and wealth, with Saravali | General rule; the aspect on the 2nd |
| BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 | Association with a Trika inflicts evils | General rule |
| BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 83-84 | Venus period: strain with kin, business losses, separations | Venus in the 6th, 8th or 12th |
| This app (phVenus8U) | "reduced vitality under real affliction" | Always printed: the 8th is a dusthana |
Why this app always prints the testing line
The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable line only when it has strong dignity and is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The second condition fails for every Venus in the 8th. In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,133 had Venus in the 8th, and every one printed the testing line, "reduced vitality under real affliction". The favourable line written for the house, "genuine longevity and wealth when well supported - Venus tends to do better here than most planets", is close to Saravali's verse, sits in the app's strings, and is never shown.
The same holds on the dasha side: buildDashaLordEffects() reads a Venus period as unfavourable and dashaQuality() grades it challenging for every Venus in a dusthana, which they did for all 10,133 charts. Those two follow BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 and Sl. 83-84 exactly. Meanwhile the sample shows how much dignity the rule overrides: Venus was exalted in 11.1 per cent of those charts, in its own sign in 16.7 and in a friendly sign in 29.6. That is the limit of the rule, and the exceptions column is the place to read your own case.
Your rising sign: Venus's sign, lordship and yogas
With whole-sign houses, a Venus in the 8th is in the eighth sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 8th, and two apply to every row. Some of them carry clauses that brand a person; the table names them in its caption rather than in the cells.
| Ascendant | Venus in | Natural dignity | Venus rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 8th | Engine yoga |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Scorpio | Neutral (Mars) | 2nd and 7th | Sl. 20: abundant land and wealth, limited marital ease; Sl. 80: deprived of marital happiness | - |
| Taurus | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 1st and 6th | Sl. 8: an accomplished scholar, sickly; Sl. 68: inimical, wanting others' things | Harsha |
| Gemini | Capricorn | Friendly (Saturn) | 5th and 12th | Sl. 56: little happiness from children; Sl. 140: always gains, affable, good qualities | Vimala |
| Cancer | Aquarius | Friendly (Saturn) | 4th and 11th | Sl. 44: short of domestic comforts; Sl. 128: reversals in undertakings | - |
| Leo | Pisces | Exalted | 3rd and 10th | Sl. 32: a livelihood from serving others; Sl. 116: "devoid of acts" | - |
| Virgo | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 2nd and 9th | Sl. 20: abundant land and wealth; Sl. 104: not prosperous | - |
| Libra | Taurus | Own sign | 1st and 8th | Sl. 8: an accomplished scholar; Sl. 92: the 8th lord at home, long-lived if strong | Sarala |
| Scorpio | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 7th and 12th | Sl. 80: deprived of marital happiness; Sl. 140: always gains | Vimala |
| Sagittarius | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 6th and 11th | Sl. 68: inimical; Sl. 128: reversals in undertakings | Harsha |
| Capricorn | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 5th and 10th | Sl. 56: little happiness from children; Sl. 116: "devoid of acts" | - |
| Aquarius | Virgo | Debilitated | 4th and 9th | Sl. 44: short of domestic comforts; Sl. 104: not prosperous | - |
| Pisces | Libra | Moolatrikona 0-15 deg; own sign after | 3rd and 8th | Sl. 32: livelihood from service; Sl. 92: long-lived if strong | Sarala |
The table shows an arithmetic fact worth knowing: Venus can only be in its own sign in the 8th when it rules the 8th, which happens for Libra and Pisces rising. So every own-sign Venus in the 8th is also the 8th lord in its own house, the case Ch. 24 Sl. 92 reads as long-lived (medium-lived if weak), and every one of them forms the engine's Sarala Yoga. The exalted case, Leo rising, carries the 3rd and 10th lordships instead, and the commentator's rule would have the 8th damage the 10th, the good house Venus owns there.
Three lessons follow from the Ch. 24 slokas for lords placed in the 8th, and each touches a Venus row. The 10th and 11th lords here are read as harming their own houses: "devoid of acts" for the 10th lord, reversals in undertakings for the 11th. That is Venus for Leo and Capricorn rising, and for Cancer and Sagittarius. The 2nd lord here gives abundant land and wealth, fitting the house's own item, the wealth of the dead; that is Venus for Aries and Virgo rising. And the most favourable sloka of the eleven belongs to another Trika lord, the 12th, which is Venus for Gemini and Scorpio rising. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 32 adds one general timing line for the group the 8th belongs to: planets in succedent houses give their effects in middle age. That reads as emphasis, not a dating rule.
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add two rules about the 8th lord that bear on two rows. For Pisces rising Venus owns the 8th with the 3rd, and the passage calls an 8th lord that also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th specifically harmful. For Libra rising Venus owns the 8th with the Lagna, and the same passage calls the Lagna lord specially auspicious and says a planet owning a predominant house gives that house's results over its lesser one. That principle holds for Libra.
Vipareeta yogas, and Sl. 140
The engine's Yogas calculator reports Harsha, Sarala or Vimala when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in a Trika. Venus in the 8th forms one for six Lagnas: Harsha for Taurus and Sagittarius, Sarala for Libra and Pisces, Vimala for Gemini and Scorpio. The engine follows a modern case-study book that gives no numbered definition; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator quotes Uttara Kalamrita for Trika lords in each other's houses (under Jupiter in the 12th, p. 86); and BPHS reads some of the same placements differently. For the Vimala cases BPHS is unusually close: Ch. 24 Sl. 140 gives the 12th lord in the 8th "will always gain", affable speech and good qualities, the nearest thing in BPHS to the later idea that Trika lords in Trika houses turn out well.
Two classical yogas that want a benefic in the 8th
- Lagn Adhi Yog, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 37. Benefics in the 7th and 8th from the Lagna, free of conjunction with or aspect from malefics, make "a great person, learned in Shastras and happy". It is a major favourable yoga that requires benefics in the 8th, and a Venus in the 8th supplies one of them.
- Parvat Yog, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 7-8. Benefics in the angles, with the 7th and 8th vacant or occupied only by benefics. Here the 8th's part is to stay clean of malefics, and a Venus there satisfies it if nothing malefic joins it.
Both are classical statements that a benefic in the 8th is an asset, set against the Trika rule. A search of the engine's yoga code finds no test for either, so neither appears in the app's yoga list; they have to be checked by hand. What a yoga in your chart means explains how much weight any one yoga can bear.
The weak-Trika Raj Yogas, and why Venus cannot meet one of them
BPHS Ch. 39 builds Raj Yogas on weak planets in the hard houses. Sl. 19 asks for debilitated planets in the 6th, 8th and 3rd while the Lagna lord is exalted or in its own house and aspects the Lagna. Sl. 20 asks for the 6th, 8th and 12th lords in fall, in enemy signs or combust, with the Lagna lord in its own or exaltation sign aspecting the Lagna. Sl. 28 adds one debilitated 6th, 8th or 12th lord aspecting the Lagna. A debilitated Venus in the 8th, Aquarius rising's case, can be one of the Sl. 19 planets. It can never satisfy Sl. 28, because Venus there rules the 4th and 9th, and from the 8th it aspects only the 2nd, not the Lagna. (Sl. 29-31, which the earlier version cited here, are a different Raj Yoga, with Venus aspecting the 11th from the Arudha Lagna.)
Saravali's sign verses beside the house verse
Saravali Ch. 28 describes Venus by sign, and four of those verses fall in the 8th for particular Lagnas. Taurus (Libra rising): agriculture, scents, fine robes, charity, support of relatives. Libra (Pisces rising): hard-earned money, valour, fine dress, fortune and a life abroad. Pisces (Leo rising): courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech and wisdom. Virgo (Aquarius rising): skill, sweet speech and several incomes, devoid of happiness and pleasures. For the three dignified signs the sign verse and Saravali's house verse point the same way, towards wealth. Saravali is, on this placement, consistent with itself and at odds with the Trika rule.
The dignity label you will still see
The house line ignores dignity, but the strength panel does not. For signs Venus neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine combines Venus's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.
- Strong whatever else: Libra and Pisces rising (own sign) and Leo rising (exalted).
- Debilitated: Aquarius rising, Venus in Virgo.
- Friendly or Neutral, decided by Saturn or Mercury: Gemini, Cancer and Scorpio rising.
- Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Aries, Taurus and Virgo rising.
- At best Neutral: Sagittarius and Capricorn rising, with Venus in a sign of the Moon or the Sun.
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 put Venus's directional strength at nil in the 10th and full in the 4th; the 8th is two houses from the 10th, and in the worked chart the Shad Bala calculator gave it 1.33 of 4 directional points. Combustion zeroes the position score within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde; Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays when combust, and the engine does not.
The aspect: Venus looks at the 2nd
Venus has only its 7th-sign aspect, and from the 8th it falls on the 2nd house, the house of wealth, family and speech. The engine returns the 2nd. The Bhrigu commentator uses exactly this aspect to explain 8th-house readings: the Sun and Mars there are said to trouble the eyes (pp. 26, 56), a 2nd-house matter, Saturn to bring poverty (p. 105), and Venus, in his Note (p. 94), to make the native wealthy. For a benefic the same aspect is a benefic aspect on the 2nd, and BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 say a house prospers when a benefic aspects it. BPHS states no separate result for Venus's aspect from the 8th. See the 2nd house and Venus in the 2nd house for the opposite placement.
Timing: the Venus period and its releases
The Venus Mahadasha runs twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). For a Venus in the 8th, Ch. 47 Sl. 83-84 and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 read the period unfavourably, and the app agrees. BPHS supplies releases the engine does not apply. The Venus Mahadasha and 8th-house pages also cover Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 1/2: the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord becomes favourable when it is associated with the lord of a trine, and a dasha lord aspected by a Kendra or trine lord also gives favourable results. Ch. 42 Sl. 13 is the converse: a planet tied to a Trika lord with no aspect from a trine lord harms finances in its period. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 also say the placement at birth and at the start of the dasha should both be considered. The engine applies only the birth chart. And when Venus is your 8th lord, as for Libra and Pisces rising, the app shows the 8th lord's theme with the death wording of the source removed: "major transformation and financial caution - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha".
For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and treats the 1st, 8th and 12th from the Moon as testing for every planet, benefic or malefic; for Venus the note reads that this is classically more testing even for a natural benefic. Here the natal and transit frames agree in direction, though they count from different points.
A worked chart
The figures below are this app's engine output for a birth at 19:02 IST on 1 February 1993 in New Delhi. The Venus page uses a different 8th-house chart, with Venus in its own sign; this one shows the exalted case. It illustrates rules and is not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Leo 3.00 deg |
| Venus | Pisces 5.37 deg (Uttara Bhadrapada), 8th house, exalted, direct |
| Jupiter, lord of Pisces | Virgo 20.85 deg, retrograde, 2nd house, aspecting the 8th |
| Saturn | Capricorn 26.13 deg, own sign, combust, 6th house, aspecting the 8th |
| Moon | Taurus 7.46 deg (Krittika), exalted, 10th house |
| House line | Testing: "reduced vitality under real affliction" |
| Dasha verdict / quality | Testing / challenging |
| Strength | 13.96 of 20, Strong: position 10, direction 1.33 |
| Venus Mahadasha | From 24 Mar 2088 |
An exalted, Strong Venus prints the testing line and a challenging quality, because the house is a Trika. The classical readings divide. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 69 reads the placement at its most generous. The Bhrigu Sutras' condition is met: Pisces is a benefic's sign, and Jupiter, a benefic, aspects Venus, so the sutras would read the span at its fullest. Lagn Adhi Yog is not met, because Saturn, a malefic, aspects Venus in the 8th. And for Leo rising Venus rules the 3rd and 10th, so Ch. 24 Sl. 32 and Sl. 116 apply, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 list Venus with the malefics, and the commentator's rule would have the 8th damage the 10th.
Venus's aspect falls on the 2nd, where Jupiter sits, a benefic aspect on a benefic in the house of wealth. And the Moon in Krittika starts life in the Sun's Mahadasha; by the engine's timeline the Venus Mahadasha does not begin until 2088. For this chart, the dasha verdict the app prints is about a period that arrives very late if at all.
This site's Venus page works through the other kind of case: a birth on 22 September 1986 at 18:20 IST in New Delhi, with a Pisces Lagna and Venus at 18.06 degrees of Libra in the 8th, in its own sign and not combust. There the engine labels Venus 12.96 of 20, just under Strong; finds Sarala Yoga, because Venus is the 8th lord in the 8th, along with Vesi and an Adhi Yoga; prints the testing house sentence; grades the dasha challenging; and places Venus in Pisces, its exaltation sign, in the Navamsa. That page's conclusion fits this one too: no single line should be read alone, and an honest reading reports all of it.
Checking a Venus in the 8th in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 8th if it is in the eighth sign from your Ascendant.
- Expect the testing house line in every case, and read the dignity label and Strength panel separately.
- Note Venus's sign lord and its company: a benefic's sign or a benefic beside Venus is the Bhrigu Sutras' condition for the better reading.
- Find the two houses Venus rules, read both Ch. 24 slokas, and look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala.
- Are the 7th and 8th free of malefic conjunction and aspect? That is Lagn Adhi Yog's condition.
- For the dasha, check whether Venus is joined to a trine lord or aspected by a Kendra or trine lord (BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17), and look at the 8th house's points in the Ashtakavarga table.
- Keep transits, counted from the Moon, separate.
The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.
Common misreadings
- "The app says testing, so my Venus is weak." Every Venus in the 8th gets the testing line. The dignity and Strength readings are separate and can be excellent.
- "Venus in the 8th shortens life." Saravali reads it as long life, the Bhrigu Sutras make the span depend on company, and BPHS calls the 8th a house of longevity. This app computes no lifespan.
- "Venus in the 8th is pure good news because Saravali says so." BPHS treats the 8th as a Trika and reads a Venus period from there unfavourably.
- "Sarala Yoga means my 8th-house Venus is a Raj Yoga." It forms when Venus rules the 8th, for Libra and Pisces rising, and the engine follows a modern source for it.
- "The 8th is the house of transformation." That is the modern label on the app's house card. BPHS lists longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and things past and to come.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Venus in the 8th house good or bad?
- The sources disagree. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 69 reads it as long-lived, very rich and equal to a king. The Bhrigu Sutras read it as happy yet discontented, better in a benefic's sign or with a benefic, and their commentator sides with Saravali. BPHS treats the 8th as a Trika and reads the Venus period from there unfavourably.
- Why does the app show the testing line for my exalted Venus in the 8th?
- Its house rule requires a planet to be outside the 6th, 8th and 12th before the favourable line can print. That held for no Venus-in-the-8th chart in the engine sample. The favourable line written for the house exists in the app's strings but is never shown.
- Does Venus in the 8th form a yoga?
- In the engine, a Vipareeta yoga when Venus rules a Trika: Harsha for Taurus and Sagittarius rising, Sarala for Libra and Pisces, Vimala for Gemini and Scorpio. In BPHS, a benefic in the 8th is part of Lagn Adhi Yog and Parvat Yog when malefics are kept away.
- What does Venus aspect from the 8th house?
- Only the 2nd house. The Bhrigu commentator uses that aspect to explain why planets in the 8th affect wealth and the eyes, and in his Note on Venus says it makes the native wealthy.
- Is the Venus Mahadasha bad for a Venus in the 8th?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 83-84 and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 read it unfavourably, and the app grades it challenging. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 allow it to turn favourable when Venus is associated with a trine lord or aspected by a Kendra or trine lord; the app does not apply that.
- Does Venus in the 8th mean an inheritance?
- BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 list the wealth of the dead among the 8th house's subjects, but no verse cited here ties Venus in the 8th to an inheritance, and this page does not supply one.
- Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
- See Venus in the 7th house and Venus in the 9th house.
