Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Venus in the 7th house, where the sources split in tone; Malavya Yoga; why Venus here is read for the spouse from the Lagna itself; and how this app decides whether your Venus in the 7th reads as favourable.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

BPHS Ch. 32 names a fixed significator for each house, and for the 7th, the house of the spouse, it names Venus. A Venus in the 7th is therefore the significator of marriage sitting in the house of marriage. Most readers expect that to be the classic good placement, and two of the three sources this site works from read it that way. The third, and BPHS's own 7th-house chapter, read it differently in tone. This page sets out all four, shows where they part, and follows the placement through this app's engine.

It describes rules, not a marriage. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 7th house, Yuvati Bhava. Nothing here compares two people's charts, and nothing here is a statement about anyone's spouse.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Several 7th-house verses concern sexual conduct, numbers of spouses, ages at marriage and a spouse's death. This page names them without reproducing them, and the app's own provenance notes record that it dropped them.

The house and its significator

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 8 lists the 7th house in one line: wife, travel, trade, loss of sight and death. Only one of the five is marriage. Saravali Ch. 3 names the house Stri and Kama, the spouse and desire, and BPHS Ch. 29 calls its Arudha the Dar Pad, from Dara, spouse. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list widens it to a life partner of either sex, a business partner, legal bonds and influence abroad.

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 7th a Kendra, the descendant. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 then say benefics owning Kendras lose their benefic effects and that the 7th and 10th are "specially for happiness". The 7th is also one of the two Marak Bhavas of Ch. 44, a technical class from the longevity chapters that this app does not use for any prediction. And Ch. 32 names Venus the 7th's fixed significator, which is why BPHS Ch. 18, the house's own chapter, refers to Venus simply as "the Karaka".

One more rule from Ch. 32 changes how a Venus in the 7th is read. Sl. 22-24 say the spouse is read from the 7th house counted from Venus, as well as from the 7th from the Lagna. With Venus in the 7th, the 7th from Venus is the Lagna itself. So for this one placement, the two classical places to look for the spouse are the 7th house, where Venus sits, and the 1st, where its count lands; and Venus's aspect, falling on the 1st, joins them.

Four readings of the same placement

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 68: wholly good

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 68 (p. 104): "very beautiful, be happy with his wife, will enjoy great riches, be devoid of quarrels and be fortunate". It is among the warmest verses Saravali gives Venus anywhere, and it carries no condition.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 37-44: good, with conditions

Sutras 37-44 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 93, corpus line 3679): wealthy, with conveyances, efficient in work, with a family of brothers and wife; the text also speaks of a strong appetite and of interest in women other than the wife. With a benefic, or in its own sign or exaltation, great wealth by gift from the in-laws and influence through the wife. With a malefic, in a malefic's sign or debilitated, the sutras speak of the loss of the wife and a second marriage, and with many malefics of repeated loss and no children; those are named here, not repeated as forecasts. The commentator (p. 93) adds his own view that with Jupiter joining or aspecting Venus "both the native and his wife will be very chaste and will enjoy a very happy married life". The app's provenance comment records that these sutras carry explicit lines and repeated multiple-marriage predictions, and that all of those were dropped when the app's own lines were written.

BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 3: a different emphasis

BPHS gives Venus in the 7th one sloka of its own, Ch. 18 Sl. 3, the verse most often quoted alone. It reads the placement in terms of strong appetite rather than happiness, and adds that Venus joined to a malefic in any house is a hard reading for the spouse. This page does not quote it further. What matters for reading is that BPHS's own chapter judges marriage mainly through the 7th lord and its condition, and Sl. 3 is the one statement in it that rests on a single factor.

The commentary that notices the split

The commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras notices the disagreement itself. Its Note (pp. 93-94) says the authorities agree in essence, but that "Saravali however does not consider" the many-women reading the Bhrigu Sutras give. Of the authorities it quotes, Brihat Jatak and Phaldeepika also lean to appetite, and Chamatkar Chintamani gives attractiveness and a fine son. So the tradition records its own split: BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 3 and the sutras stress appetite, one stresses happiness and riches, and a commentator points out the difference.

This app wrote its lines from the Bhrigu chapter with those clauses removed. Favourable: "a genuinely happy, wealthy partnership - capable of forming Malavya Yoga here, one of Venus' classically strong placements". Testing: "real strain and instability in partnership under affliction". The favourable line is closer to Saravali in tone than to the Bhrigu text it was written from.

How BPHS Ch. 18 judges the house around Venus

Ch. 18 reads as a method that tests four things: the 7th lord's dignity, its house, what joins or aspects the lord and the house, and the strength of Venus. A Venus in the 7th touches all four. Sl. 1 gives full happiness through the spouse when the 7th lord is in its own sign or exaltation. Sl. 2 says the 7th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is hard for the spouse, and immediately exempts an own-sign or exalted lord. Sl. 4-5 call a strong 7th lord with a benefic wealthy, honourable and fortunate. Sl. 16 reads difficulty when the 7th house or its lord is joined by a malefic, especially if weak.

Sl. 18 is the one that names Venus by role: lack of marital happiness when the Moon is in the 7th, the 7th lord is in the 12th and Venus, "the Karaka", is weak, all three together. A Venus in the 7th is not automatically strong, but it is in an angle and in its own house of signification, so of the three conditions it most often supplies the opposite of the third. No verse in this group rests on a single factor, Sl. 3 excepted.

Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 45-46 (p. 129) give a simpler rule. If Jupiter, the Moon, Venus or Mercury occupy or aspect the 7th, the spouse corresponds to those planets and signs; malefics there affect the spouse adversely; and the result is judged from the Ascendant and from the Moon, the stronger counting for more. A Venus in the 7th from the Lagna meets the first clause. For the second frame, find your Moon sign and count seven from it.

Malavya Yoga in the 7th

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Malavya when Venus is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle. The 7th is an angle, so Malavya forms with Venus in the 7th for Aries rising (Venus in Libra), Virgo rising (Venus in Pisces) and Scorpio rising (Venus in Taurus). The app's favourable line names it, and the Yogas calculator reports it. In the engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,126 had Venus in the 7th, and Malavya formed in 29.2 per cent of them, a little more than in the 1st or the 4th.

BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 also set a limit on angles: planets in mutual angles in own, exalted or friendly signs become Yoga Karakas, but planets merely sitting in the 1st, 4th or 7th without such dignity do not. Occupying the 7th is not enough on its own. Malavya and that rule ask the same question of Venus: is it dignified?

Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules

With whole-sign houses, a Venus in the 7th is in the sign opposite your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 7th, and two apply to every row.

Dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; lordship is arithmetic from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 condensed from the text. Left out of the cells: Sl. 19 others' wives; Sl. 43 dumb in an assembly; Sl. 79 windy diseases; Sl. 91 two wives; Sl. 127 sensuous, at the spouse's command; Sl. 139 bereft of learning and strength.

Read together, the lords of the 5th, 9th and 10th in the 7th are the three rows the text reads as unmixed happiness, and the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th the three that disturb the marriage. For Venus that sorts the Lagnas cleanly. Capricorn, Aquarius, Leo and Virgo rising bring happiness slokas; Taurus, Sagittarius, Libra, Pisces and Scorpio rising bring at least one disturbing one. Capricorn and Aquarius rising are the clearest cases on lordship, and the weakest on dignity: Venus sits in a sign of the Moon or the Sun, which never reads better than Neutral in this engine.

Aries and Scorpio rising make Venus the 7th lord in its own 7th: Ch. 18 Sl. 1 and Ch. 24 Sl. 79 both read that as happiness through the spouse, and Malavya forms. They also carry the caution the Venus Mahadasha page also covers from BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 88-89, physical pains and troubles in the dasha of a Venus that rules the 2nd or 7th; for Aries rising Venus rules both. BPHS Ch. 34 lists Venus as a malefic for both Lagnas.

Saravali's sign verses for the dignified cases

Saravali Ch. 28 describes Venus in each sign regardless of house. For Libra (Aries rising) it gives hard-earned money, valour, fine dress, protection of one's own people and fortune, with a life abroad. For Taurus (Scorpio rising) it gives agriculture, scents, garlands and fine robes, charity and support of relatives. For Pisces (Virgo rising) it gives courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech and a person who keeps promises. For Virgo (Pisces rising), the debilitation sign, it gives skill, sweet speech and several incomes, devoid of happiness and pleasures. None of the four speaks of the spouse, which is the house verse's subject; read together, the sign verse describes the person and the house verse the partnership.

Beyond the birth chart: Navamsa, Dar Pada and Upa Pada

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 assign the spouse to the Navamsa, the ninth division, and Ch. 18 uses it in several slokas. So a Venus in the 7th of the birth chart is half of the picture the text asks for; its sign in the Navamsa calculator, and what falls in the 7th there, are the other half. Navamsa, the second chart explains how the division is built. Because a Navamsa sign lasts only 3 degrees 20 minutes, it is the first thing to go wrong with a rounded birth time.

The texts tie three more measures to the 7th. BPHS Ch. 29 reads the Dar Pada, the Arudha of the 7th, against the Arudha of the Lagna: in mutual angles or trines there is amity between the couple. BPHS Ch. 30 Sl. 1-6 read the Upa Pada joined or aspected by a benefic as full happiness from progeny and spouse. And BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 11-17 read an unobstructed Argala on the 7th, by a benefic or a malefic, as abundant wealth and marital happiness. None of the three is decided by Venus's house alone, and a Venus in the 7th does not by itself form any of them. The app computes the padas and the Argala, so each can be checked rather than assumed.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line for Venus in the 7th when Venus is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign. The 7th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. For signs Venus neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine combines the natural relation (Mercury and Saturn friends, the Sun and Moon enemies, Mars and Jupiter neutral) with a temporary relation from your chart: a sign lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.

  • Always favourable: Aries and Scorpio rising (own sign) and Virgo rising (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Pisces rising, Venus debilitated in Virgo.
  • Favourable if Saturn or Mercury is well placed from Venus: Cancer, Leo and Sagittarius rising; otherwise Neutral.
  • Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Taurus, Gemini and Libra rising.
  • At best Neutral: Capricorn and Aquarius rising. For Aquarius rising the Sun is always within two signs of Venus, so Leo reads Neutral unless the Sun is in Leo as well.

In the sample, 59.8 per cent of Venus-in-the-7th charts printed the favourable line, and debilitation came up in only 5.2 per cent. The test does not look at the 7th lord, Venus's company or aspects, all of which Ch. 18 asks for, and it does not look at the Navamsa, which BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to the spouse. A testing line means Venus lacks dignity; a favourable line means it has it. Neither is a statement about a marriage.

The aspect: Venus looks back at the Lagna

BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give Venus only its 7th-sign aspect, and from the 7th it falls on the 1st house. The engine returns the 1st and nothing else. On the 1st-house side, BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 4 say the body is comfortable when the Lagna is joined or aspected by a benefic, and Sl. 3 say health suffers when the Lagna is touched by a malefic with no benefic aspect alongside. A Venus in the 7th supplies a benefic aspect to the Lagna in every chart. In the Shad Bala calculation that aspect counts as benefic for any planet in your 1st.

The Venus in the 1st house page treats the mirror case: Venus in the Lagna aspecting the 7th. In both placements Venus and the 7th from Venus fall on the same axis, so the spouse is read from one pair of houses rather than two.

Strength and flags

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measure Venus's directional strength from the 10th: nil there, full in the 4th. The 7th is halfway, and in the worked chart below the Shad Bala calculator gave Venus 2 of 4 directional points. Combustion zeroes Venus's position score within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde; it happened in 15.0 per cent of the sample. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays when combust; the engine does not.

The Mild Kendradhipathya flag appears with Venus in the 7th for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, where Venus owns the 4th, 7th or 10th without the 1st. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 add that among benefics the loss from Kendra lordship is greatest for Venus. For Capricorn and Aquarius Sl. 13 overrides it, because Venus also owns a trine.

Timing: the Venus period, the 7th lord and marriage

The Venus Mahadasha lasts twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 describe the period of a Venus in its own or exaltation sign or an angle in terms of clothes, ornaments, conveyances, land, recognition and celebrations, and a Venus in the 7th always meets the angle condition. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give the 7th lord's own period a hard line, which this app softens to "strain in partnership and marriage - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 add a rule that is easy to over-read. The text calls unfavourable "the Dasha of the Grahas, associated with the Lords of Marak Bhavas, namely Dhan and Yuvati, in Dhan, or Yuvati": grahas sitting with the 2nd or 7th lord in the 2nd or 7th. A Venus in the 7th falls under it only with the 2nd or 7th lord beside it, not by placement alone.

One point needs care. Ch. 48 does not name the 7th lord's period, or Venus's, as the time of marriage; the only marriage timing BPHS gives for this house is the list of ages in Ch. 18, which this app does not compute. The common practice of expecting marriage in a Venus period is not stated in those chapters.

For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon, and Venus in the 7th from the Moon is a favourable benefic position. Here the natal and transit frames happen to agree. The Kundli Matching score is a different method again: its Ashtakoot is computed from the two Moons only, so a Venus in the 7th does not enter it.

For Scorpio rising Venus rules the 7th and 12th, so it is the 7th lord in its own sign in the 7th. BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 1 reads that as full happiness through the spouse, Ch. 24 Sl. 79 as happiness through the spouse and a courageous, skilful person, and Malavya forms. Against that, Ch. 24 Sl. 139 reads the 12th lord in the 7th as spending and no conjugal bliss, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 list Venus with the malefics for this Lagna.

The engine's own data adds the conditions Ch. 18 asks about. The one aspect on Venus is Mars's, a malefic, from the 12th; Ch. 18 Sl. 16 speaks of a malefic joining the 7th or its lord, and an aspect is not a conjunction, so the sloka's condition is close but not met as written. Sl. 18 needs the Moon in the 7th, and here it is in the 12th. Venus at 28.19 degrees is in its last decanate and direct, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the end of the Venus period; that period starts in 2049, around age 50.

Checking a Venus in the 7th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 7th if it is in the sign opposite your Ascendant.
  2. Find Venus's dignity and, for a non-dignified sign, where that sign's lord sits from Venus. Note combustion.
  3. Find your 7th lord: its sign (Ch. 18 Sl. 1), its house (Sl. 2) and its company (Sl. 4-5, 16).
  4. Is a malefic with Venus, or is Venus in a malefic's sign? Those are the Bhrigu Sutras' conditions for strain.
  5. Check Malavya (Aries, Virgo or Scorpio rising) and the Kendradhipathya flag.
  6. Look at Venus and the 7th in the Navamsa (D9), which BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to the spouse, and at the Dar Pada in the Bhava Padas calculator.
  7. Repeat the 7th-house check from the Moon, as Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 45-46 advise, and keep transits separate.

Two-chart comparison is on the Compatibility page. The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books.

Common misreadings

  • "Venus in the 7th guarantees a happy marriage." Saravali reads it that way; BPHS Ch. 18 judges marriage mainly through the 7th lord, and the Bhrigu Sutras attach conditions.
  • "Venus in the 7th means infidelity." That reading comes from BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 3 and parts of the Bhrigu Sutras. Saravali does not give it, a commentator notes the split, and this app uses none of it.
  • "The karaka in its own house is always strong." Venus's strength depends on its sign, combustion and aspects. The app can label an own-sign Venus in the 7th Medium, as in the worked chart.
  • "Venus Mahadasha means marriage." No chapter cited here gives that rule, and for many charts the period falls in childhood or late life.
  • "Kundli matching checks my Venus." The app's Ashtakoot uses the two Moons only.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venus in the 7th house good for marriage?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 68 reads it as happiness with the spouse and great riches. The Bhrigu Sutras read it well when Venus is with a benefic or in its own or exaltation sign. BPHS Ch. 18 judges marriage mainly through the 7th lord and reads Sl. 3 more cautiously. The sources do not agree in tone.
Why is Venus called the karaka of the 7th house?
BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 assign a fixed significator to each house, and for the 7th it is Venus. Ch. 18 calls it "the Karaka", and Sl. 18 counts a weak Venus as one of three conditions for lack of marital happiness.
Does Venus in the 7th form Malavya Yoga?
For Aries, Virgo and Scorpio rising, where Venus is in Libra, Pisces or Taurus. In this engine's sample it formed in 29.2 per cent of Venus-in-the-7th charts.
What does Venus aspect from the 7th house?
Only the 1st house, the Lagna. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 4 count a benefic aspect on the Lagna in favour of bodily comfort. The texts cited here give no other separate result for that aspect.
Which rising signs give the strongest Venus in the 7th?
By dignity, Aries and Scorpio (own sign) and Virgo (exalted). By lordship, BPHS Ch. 24 reads the 5th, 9th and 10th lords in the 7th most warmly, which means Venus for Capricorn, Aquarius, Leo and Virgo rising. Only Virgo is strong on both counts.
Does the Venus period bring marriage?
Not by any rule cited here. BPHS Ch. 48 gives house-lord periods themes, not marriage dates, and this app computes no age or date of marriage.
Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
See Venus in the 6th house and Venus in the 8th house.
