What the classical texts say about Mars in the 7th house: Saravali's flat verdict, the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator who disagrees, BPHS Ch. 80's narrow Mars rule against this app's broader Mangal Dosha, Ruchaka Yoga, the aspects on the Lagna, 10th and 2nd, both lordships by rising sign, and how this app grades it.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

Mars in the 7th is the placement people fear most, and the sources are not unanimous about it. Saravali is flat: the native goes "devoid of wife". The Bhrigu Sutras are harsh too, and their commentator closes with a different view: "there will be no evil effects if Mars be in his sign or in his sign of exaltation", and the effects are much reduced if Jupiter aspects Mars and the 7th. BPHS has the narrowest rule of the three, and this app has the broadest.

This page sets out each of those statements with its conditions, because the conditions are where they differ. It also covers Ruchaka Yoga, which the same placement can form, Mars's three aspects from the 7th, and the two houses Mars rules for each rising sign. For the planet see Mars in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 7th house, Yuvati Bhava; for the dosha, Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not.

Sources, and what is left out

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The verses were written for men about "the wife"; this page reads them as statements about a spouse or partner, as the app's strings do. BPHS Ch. 80's Mars rule is read in the text as bereavement in marriage; it is named and its conditions set out, and it is not a prediction. Nothing here is a forecast about your marriage.

The house of partnership, and Mars

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 8: wife, travel, trade, loss of sight and death. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-27) names the house Stri and Kama. The 7th is a Kendra, the descendant, and with the 2nd a Marak Bhava (Ch. 44), whose malefic occupants are counted among the Marakas. Venus is the fixed significator (Ch. 32), and Ch. 7 assigns the spouse to the Navamsa.

Mars brings its own profile: strength and the army chief (BPHS Ch. 3), the most malefic of the natural malefics (Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10), the significator of co-borns, strength, qualities and land (Ch. 70). In the 7th it is a malefic in an angle, which is the condition for Ruchaka when dignified and, in this app, the condition for its gravest grade of Mangal Dosha.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 32 and Ch. 34 Sloka 50-51

"If Mars is posited in 7th, the native will lose his wife, will suffer from diseases, will take to bad ways, be miserable, sinful, devoid of wealth, distressed and emaciated" (Sl. 32, p. 102). Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 50-51 (p. 129) repeat that Mars in the 7th makes one "go devoid of wife", add that if Saturn alone aspects it "the wife will certainly pass away", and read Mars with Venus in the 7th, 5th or 9th as a languid or deformed wife. These are the text's statements, not forecasts. Saravali reads the Sun, Mars and Saturn in the 7th harshly with no benefic condition attached. Ch. 34 Sl. 45-46 add a general rule: malefics in the 7th, or their divisions there, adversely affect the spouse; the house may be judged from the Ascendant or the Moon, the stronger counting more.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 54-65, and the commentator

The sutras (p. 55), as the text's statements: ill health; loss of the wife if Mars is in a malefic's house, with a malefic, or even in its own sign; with a benefic, the wife dying in the native's lifetime and the native leaving his native land; failing loss of the wife, sexual intimacy outside marriage and a list of sexual perversions, drinking, and further clauses for Saturn's aspect and Ketu's company; with an inimical planet, loss of many wives, "without potency", "which will not be so if Mars is aspected by a benefic". The commentator says the text of these sutras "is so confusing that it is difficult to comment upon them", doubts that an own-sign, exalted or benefic-aspected Mars can do these things, notes that such a Mars forms Ruchaka Yoga, and sets out N. Krishna Rao's different rendering. His Note (p. 56) concludes: "there will be no evil effects if Mars be in his sign or in his sign of exaltation", and much mitigation if Jupiter aspects the 7th and Mars.

The app's favourable line for Mars here is the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator's position, not Saravali's. Note also that the engine prints it for a friendly-sign Mars, which the commentator does not name.

Seven planets in the 7th, side by side

Set Saravali Ch. 30 beside the Bhrigu Sutras for every planet and Mars falls among the hardest readings for this house.

PlanetSaravali Ch. 30Bhrigu Sutras
SunSl. 8: poor, insulted, bodily diseases, royal displeasure and imprisonment, not well disposed to the wifeLate marriage; one spouse only if the Sun is in Leo
MoonSl. 20: amiable, happy; a weak Moon the reverseA benefic Moon good, a malefic Moon bad
MarsSl. 32: loses his wife, diseases, bad ways, devoid of wealthIll health and loss of the wife in most conditions; see the commentator
MercurySl. 44: a learned, beautiful, very affluent wife, quarrelsome and not of good descent; the native "very great"Wide reputation; one wife if the 7th lord is strong, loss of the wife if it is weak or afflicted
JupiterSl. 56: a beautiful wife, eloquent, learned, famousA learned, chaste, devoted wife; illicit relations if the 7th lord is weak or afflicted
VenusSl. 68: happy with his wife, great riches, fortunateWealthy, highly sexed; with a malefic or debilitated, loss of the wife and remarriage
SaturnSl. 80: ill health, loses his wife, bereft of wealth, sinful(not tabled here)
Saravali Ch. 30 (pp. 100-104) and the Bhrigu Sutras (pp. 25, 39, 55, 68, 82, 93), checked against the corpus and abridged; most Bhrigu entries are conditional on dignity or the 7th lord.

Three points stand out: Saravali reads the Sun, Mars and Saturn harshly with no condition; the Bhrigu Sutras attach the conditions Saravali omits; and nearly every passage turns on the planet's sign, its company and the strength of the 7th lord. For Mars the condition that matters most is dignity, because it is the commentator's exception.

BPHS Ch. 80 and this app's Mangal Dosha

BPHS Ch. 80, a chapter on women's charts, Sl. 47: Mars in the 12th, 4th, 7th or 8th from the Lagna, with no benefic aspecting or joining it, is a yoga the chapter reads as bereavement in marriage. Sl. 48-49 apply it to a man equally and say it lapses when both partners have it. So BPHS's rule has two conditions that a Mars in the 7th can fail: a benefic's aspect or company, and a partner with the same yoga.

This app's check is broader in both directions. It uses six houses (1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12), and it has no benefic exception, so it reports the dosha for every Mars in the 7th; it grades the 7th and 8th Moderate and the other four Mild, and words the result "friction in partnership timing, not a fixed outcome". This app's sample counted the dosha in 49.7 per cent of 20,000 random births. The Mangal Dosha calculator shows the row. The public Kundli Matching calculator scores the eight kootas from the two Moons and does not check Mars's house; the signed-in Compatibility feature compares both charts and treats a shared Mangal Dosha as cancelled, which is BPHS Sl. 48-49's condition.

Ruchaka Yoga from the same Mars

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 form Ruchaka Yoga when Mars is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle, and the 7th is an angle. In the 7th that means Libra rising (Mars in Aries), Taurus rising (Mars in Scorpio) or Cancer rising (Mars exalted in Capricorn). The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator makes the same point (p. 55), and the same dignity is his condition for no evil effects. The yogas calculator lists it when present.

So a dignified Mars in the 7th produces, in this app, a favourable house line, Ruchaka Yoga and a Moderate Mangal Dosha at the same time. In this app's 20,000-chart sample 76.7 per cent of the Ruchaka charts also carried the dosha, because three of Ruchaka's four angles are dosha houses. The app's Mars reference example is a Cancer-rising chart with an exalted Mars in the 7th, re-run for this page with the same result: favourable line, Ruchaka, Moderate dosha, and 14.25 of 20 in Shad Bala.

Mars's aspects from the 7th

From the 7th, aspectedHouses('mars', 7) returns [1, 10, 2]: the Lagna by the 7th aspect, the 10th and the 2nd by Mars's special 4th and 8th aspects (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). The aspect on the Lagna is the malefic aspect of BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3, offset by a benefic aspect on the Lagna; the aspect on the 2nd falls on the other Marak house. The engine counts all three as malefic aspects in Shad Bala. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for them. See the 1st house and the 2nd house.

The 7th lord and Venus

BPHS Ch. 18 judges the house through its lord first; the method comes down to four checks: the 7th lord's dignity, its house, what joins or aspects it and the house, and the strength of Venus. Sl. 1: a 7th lord in its own sign or exaltation gives full happiness. Sl. 16: the wife "will incur evils" if the 7th or its lord is joined by a malefic, "especially" if house or lord lacks strength. Sl. 17: the severe reading needs a 7th lord devoid of strength in the 6th, 8th or 12th, or in fall, which the text heads "loss of spouse". Mars in the 7th is the malefic of Sl. 16; the 7th lord's strength is the qualifier.

With Mars in your 7th, the 7th lord is the lord of Mars's sign. For Libra rising it is Mars itself, in Aries, its own sign: Sl. 1's full-happiness condition and the commentator's no-evil condition are met by the same planet that triggers the dosha. In this engine's natural-relation table Mars counts Venus, the karaka of the 7th, as neutral. See Venus in the 7th house for the karaka.

Two lordships for every rising sign

Mars owns Aries and Scorpio. It is in your 7th when it occupies the sign opposite your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 7th.

Dignity is dignityOf() with no chart (natural relation only); lordship from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 rows checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1771-2072), harsh clauses as the text's statements; Ch. 34 from Sl. 19-44 (3502-3542).

Two rows name Mars's malefic nature in the verse itself. Sl. 7, the Lagna lord in the 7th, splits on malefic or benefic: if a malefic, the wife "will not live (long)", as the text's statement. For Aries and Scorpio rising Mars is that malefic Lagna lord. Read as a column: the 5th, 9th and 10th lords giving unmixed happiness in the 7th, and the 6th, 8th and 12th lords disturbing the marriage; Mars brings one of each kind for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Taurus rising.

BPHS Ch. 34 adds a lordship rule about angles. Sl. 2-7: benefics owning Kendras do not give benefic effects, and malefics owning Kendras do not remain inauspicious. Sl. 14 narrows the good news for malefics: a malefic owning a Kendra becomes auspicious "only when it simultaneously Lords over a Kon and not by merely owning a Kendr". Mars owns an angle and a trine together for Cancer (5th and 10th) and Leo (4th and 9th) rising, which is why Ch. 34 Sl. 13 makes it a Yoga Karaka for Cancer. For Taurus and Libra rising Mars owns the 7th with the 12th or the 2nd, an angle without a trine, and Ch. 34 calls it a Maraka for both.

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 1-24 (saravali.txt 3686-3753). A sign verse, not a 7th-house verse, though several lines mention a wife; harsh clauses are the text's statements.

BPHS also reads the 7th beyond the birth chart: Dar Pad, the Arudha of the 7th, against the Arudha of the Ascendant (Ch. 29); the Upa Pad (Ch. 30 Sl. 1-6), with "full happiness from progeny and spouse" when joined or aspected by a benefic; and an unobstructed benefic Argala on the 7th for "abundant wealth and marital happiness" (Ch. 31). The Bhava Padas calculator and the Navamsa calculator compute the inputs. A Mars in the 7th is one factor in each, not a verdict on any of them.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mars's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 7th is an angle, so dignity alone decides. Mangal Dosha is reported separately and does not change the line.

  • Always favourable: Libra and Taurus rising (own sign) and Cancer rising (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Capricorn rising (debilitated in Cancer), Sagittarius and Pisces rising (Mercury's signs, Neutral at best).
  • Favourable when the 7th lord sits in a temporary-friend position from Mars: Gemini, Virgo and Aquarius rising (otherwise Neutral), Aries, Leo and Scorpio rising (otherwise Enemy sign).

dashaQuality() is stricter: good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign; challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana; neutral otherwise. The Mars Mahadasha page covers the period.

Strength in the 7th

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures Mars from the 4th; the 7th is three houses from both the zero point and the peak, and this engine's even steps give Mars 2 of its 4 directional points. As an angle, the 7th gives full Kendradi Bal. The Shad Bala calculator shows all components.

Timing

Mars has 7 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 27-32 give a strong Mars in an angle a dasha of position, wealth and land, with some unfavourable effects possible at the end; Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 list the periods of planets placed in the 2nd or 7th among the unfavourable ones, the Maraka rule as a dasha rule. For Taurus and Libra rising Mars is also the 7th lord, and this app's line for that period is "strain in partnership and marriage - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha". BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give the 7th lord's dasha "distress to wife and the possibility of the death of the native", as the text's statement, and do not name it as the time of marriage. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.

Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts Mars from your natal Moon; the 7th from the Moon is unremarkable for a malefic in the engine's rules.

By the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator, this Mars is the no-evil case: it is in its own sign. By BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 1 it is the 7th lord in its own sign, the full-happiness condition. By BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47 the yoga is not met: Jupiter, a benefic, joins Mars in Aries. This app reports Mangal Dosha (Moderate) regardless, because its rule has no benefic exception; Ruchaka Yoga is reported for the same Mars.

The other layers. As 2nd and 7th lord Mars is a Maraka twice over by lordship, and Ch. 34 calls it a malefic and a Maraka for Libra rising; the Sun, a malefic, also sits in the 7th, which is Ch. 18 Sl. 16's condition and Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 45-46's. Venus, the karaka and Lagna lord, is exalted in the 6th. Mars aspects the Lagna, the 10th (the Moon) and the 2nd. Jupiter is only 0.10 degrees into Aries, so its company with Mars depends on that fraction of a degree. The page lists these and does not net them.

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 1-2, the Aries line, applies to this Mars, and Saravali Ch. 15 reads Mars with the Sun as valorous, dull-witted and a liar (Sl. 3) and with Jupiter as intelligent and expert in speech. Mars at 4.66 degrees is in the first ten degrees of Aries, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results early in the Mars period; the engine's Vimshottari sequence here opens with Saturn.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Mars is in the sign opposite your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Is Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn? That is the commentator's no-evil condition and Ruchaka.
  3. Does a benefic aspect or join Mars? That decides BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47; does Jupiter aspect Mars and the 7th (the commentator's reduction)?
  4. Find the 7th lord (the lord of Mars's sign) and Venus, as BPHS Ch. 18 asks.
  5. Read both houses Mars rules in the Ch. 24 table.
  6. If you are comparing two charts, remember BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 48-49: the yoga lapses when both partners have it. The app's Compatibility feature applies that cancellation.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

What the texts do not say

  • "Mars in the 7th ruins marriage." BPHS Ch. 80 limits its rule to a Mars without benefic aspect or company and ends it when both partners have it; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator sees no ill effects in own sign or exaltation.
  • "Mangal Dosha in the app means the classical yoga is present." The app's rule is broader: six houses and no benefic exception.
  • "Ruchaka cancels the dosha." They are separate readings; this app reports both.
  • "Mangal Dosha is rare." By the engine's rule about half of all charts have it.
  • "The 7th lord's dasha is when marriage happens." BPHS names no such timing.
  • "Maraka means Mars in the 7th is dangerous." The Maraka label belongs to a longevity method that weighs many factors over a whole life; this app applies none of it.

Questions about Mars in the 7th

Is Mars in the 7th house bad for marriage?
Saravali says so without conditions. The Bhrigu Sutras are harsh too, but their commentator sees no ill effects when Mars is in its own sign or exalted and much reduced effects with Jupiter's aspect. BPHS Ch. 80 limits its rule to a Mars with no benefic aspect or company.
Does Mars in the 7th always mean Mangal Dosha?
In this app, yes, graded Moderate. In BPHS Ch. 80, only when no benefic aspects or joins Mars, and the yoga lapses when both partners have it.
When does Mars in the 7th form Ruchaka Yoga?
When it is in Aries (Libra rising), Scorpio (Taurus rising) or Capricorn (Cancer rising).
What does Mars aspect from the 7th?
The 1st, 10th and 2nd houses. The engine counts all three as malefic aspects.
Which rising signs give the strongest Mars in the 7th?
By dignity, Cancer rising (exalted, as Yoga Karaka), Libra and Taurus rising (own sign, as 7th lord). Capricorn rising gives a debilitated Mars.
Does the compatibility check use Mangal Dosha?
The signed-in Compatibility feature compares both charts and treats a shared Mangal Dosha as cancelled. The public Kundli Matching calculator scores the eight kootas from the two Moons and does not check Mars's house.
Should the 7th be read from the Moon too?
Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 45-46 say the 7th may be judged from the Ascendant or the Moon, the stronger having more significance. A Mars in the 7th from the Ascendant may sit in quite a different house from the Moon.
Is a Mars dasha difficult with this placement?
BPHS gives a strong Mars in an angle a good dasha (Ch. 47) and planets placed in the 7th an unfavourable one (Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20). This app grades it by dignity and house.
