The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator states a general rule in his notes on Saturn in the 8th (p. 105): "All malefics in the 8th house shorten the longevity of the native but Saturn in this house is believed to give good longevity." Mars is the most malefic of the natural malefics in BPHS Ch. 34, so a Mars in the 8th is the case that rule describes most directly. The sutras on Mars here say so, and then do what they do for almost every planet in this house: attach an exception that reverses the reading.
The exception for Mars is a benefic: with one, good health and long life. Saravali gives disease and grief without that exit. BPHS makes the 8th a Mangal Dosha house in its Ch. 80 rule, with its own benefic exception; this app's check has none and grades the 8th Moderate. This page sets those out, with Mars as 8th lord for two Ascendants, the Vipareeta yogas, and why the app's line is always testing here. For the planet see Mars in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 8th house, Randhra Bhava.
Sources, and longevity
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Much of the classical material on this house concerns the length of life; it is a record of the texts, not a prediction. This app does not calculate a lifespan, and nothing here is medical advice.
The house of longevity
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9: longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and things past and to come. BPHS Ch. 44 names the 3rd and 8th the two houses of longevity; the Maraka houses are the 2nd and 7th. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-27) calls the 8th Vinasa and Dehavivara. The 8th is the 12th from the 9th, the loss of fortune, which BPHS Ch. 34 gives as the reason its lord is not auspicious. It is a Panaphara, a Dusthana and a Chaturasra (Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). Saturn, not Mars, is its fixed significator.
"Battle" and "enemies" are both in Ch. 11 Sl. 9, and both are Mars's subjects elsewhere: BPHS makes Mars the army chief (Ch. 3 Sl. 14-15) and the karaka of the 6th, the house of enemies (Ch. 32). None of the three texts draws a rule from that overlap, and this page does not either.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 33
"If Mars occupies the 8th, the native will suffer from diseases, be short-lived, will possess an ugly, or deformed body, will do base acts and will suffer grief" (p. 102). It is reported as what the verse says, not as a forecast or medical advice.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 66-71
The sutras (p. 56), as the text's statements: eye diseases; not long-lived; the father dying early in the native's life; urinary diseases; few children; rheumatism and shooting pains; "but will have a happy married life". With a benefic, good health and a long life. In a malefic's house or with a malefic, rheumatism, consumption or urinary troubles and a medium span. With a strong 8th lord, full longevity. The commentator (pp. 56-57) derives the eye clause from Mars's aspect on the 2nd and the father clause from the 8th being the 12th from the 9th, and calls the 8th "the worst Dusthana". The happy married life is notable beside the 7th house reading and the Mangal Dosha label for this same house.
| Source | Reading | Exception or condition |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 33 | Diseases, short-lived, an ugly or deformed body, base acts, grief | None in the verse |
| Bhrigu Sutras 66-71 | Eye diseases, not long-lived, the father dying early, urinary troubles, few children; a happy married life | With a benefic: good health and long life. Strong 8th lord: full longevity |
| Bhrigu commentary | All malefics in the 8th shorten longevity, Saturn excepted (p. 105) | Mars in the 8th aspects the 2nd, hence the eye clause (p. 56) |
| BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47-49 | A yoga of bereavement in marriage | Only with no benefic aspecting or joining Mars; lapses if both partners have it |
| This app, phMars8U | Health strain and reduced vitality | Printed for every Mars in the 8th |
The Bhrigu Sutras show a pattern across the 8th: every planet gets a bleak first reading and a stated exception, and two break the pattern outright, Mercury (spoken of "very well") and Saturn (long life, as the karaka). Mars's exception is a benefic's company; Jupiter's and the Moon's are their own sign or exaltation.
| Planet in the 8th | Bhrigu Sutras reading | The stated exception |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Few children, meagre wealth, chronic complaints, yet famous | Exalted or own sign: long-lived |
| Moon | Loss of comforts; danger from watery places | Own sign or exalted: long-lived; waning: medium span |
| Mars | Eye diseases, not long-lived, few children; a happy married life | With a benefic: good health and long life; strong 8th lord: full longevity |
| Mercury | A good span of life, much land, wide fame | Turns short only if the 8th lord is debilitated with malefics |
| Jupiter | Short-lived, drawn to undesirable activity | Own sign or exalted: long-lived, healthy, learned |
| Venus | Happy, a devoted wife, yet discontented; less than a medium span, sickly | In a benefic sign or with a benefic: full span |
| Saturn | A long life, but poverty and service | Own sign or exalted: a still longer life |
Mars is the only planet in that table whose exception is a benefic's company rather than its own dignity. A Mars in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn in the 8th still needs the benefic for the sutras' reversal; a Mars in a weaker sign that a benefic aspects has it. Mars's own significations include strength (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13) and the body's marrow (Sl. 31), which is why the texts read a Mars in the house of the body's span so much in terms of health.
The aspect on the 2nd
From the 8th, aspectedHouses('mars', 8) returns [2, 11, 3]: the 2nd by the 7th aspect, the 11th and 3rd by Mars's special aspects (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator uses the first of these directly: "From the eighth house Mars will aspect the second house which inter alia signifies eyesight" (p. 56), and he reads the Sun in the 8th the same way. That is the commentator's derivation from the aspect, reported as such, not a diagnosis. The 11th and 3rd are Upachayas, where the texts welcome malefics as occupants. See the 2nd house.
BPHS Ch. 80 and this app's Mangal Dosha
BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47: Mars in the 12th, 4th, 7th or 8th from the Lagna, with no benefic aspecting or joining it, is a yoga the chapter reads as bereavement in marriage; Sl. 48-49 apply it to a man equally and let it lapse when both partners have it. The 8th is in BPHS's list. The benefic condition is the same one the Bhrigu Sutras give for good health and long life here, so a benefic aspect on a Mars in the 8th removes BPHS's yoga and reverses the sutras' reading at once.
This app's check uses six houses and no benefic exception, grades the 7th and 8th Moderate, and words the result "friction in partnership timing, not a fixed outcome". It therefore reports the dosha for every Mars in the 8th, including the cases BPHS exempts. The Mangal Dosha calculator shows the row, and Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not covers the rule. The signed-in Compatibility feature treats a shared Mangal Dosha as cancelled.
Two numbers from this app's 20,000-chart sample put the dosha in proportion. By the engine's six-house rule, 49.7 per cent of 20,000 random births carried Mangal Dosha, so about half of all charts have it from one house or another; the 8th is one of the two graded Moderate. And unlike a Mars in the 1st, 4th or 7th, a Mars in the 8th cannot also form Ruchaka Yoga, because the 8th is not an angle, so a dignified Mars here carries the dosha without the yoga that often accompanies it elsewhere.
Mars as the 8th lord
Mars rules the 8th for Aries rising (with the 1st) and Virgo rising (with the 3rd). BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 give four rules for 8th lords: their effects depend on association; the 8th lord is not auspicious in itself; owning the 3rd, 7th or 11th as well makes it "specifically harmful"; owning a trine as well makes it auspicious. Virgo rising is the "specifically harmful" case: Mars owns the 8th and the 3rd.
Aries rising is the special case. The 8th lord is also the Lagna lord, which Ch. 34 calls specially auspicious, and Sl. 19-22 address it by name: "Even though Mangal is the Lord of Randhr Bhava, he will be helpful to auspicious Grahas." The principle stated just before applies: a planet owning a predominant house stalls the effects due to its lesser house and gives its own results. A Mars in Scorpio in the 8th for Aries rising is that Lagna lord in its own sign in its lesser house.
BPHS Ch. 19 opens with the 8th lord: in an angle, long life (Sl. 1); joined to the Lagna lord or a malefic in the 8th itself, short (Sl. 2). For Aries rising, Mars in the 8th is the 8th lord and the Lagna lord at once, in the 8th; the text does not say how Sl. 2 reads a single planet that is both, and this page does not decide. Sl. 7 closes the list with the method: many other yogas, and the strength of the planets, must be weighed. Ch. 43 Sl. 71-73 grade life by the stronger of the Lagna lord and the 8th lord; this page records these without applying them, and this app computes none.
Two more rules name the Lagna lord in the 8th, which Mars is for Aries and Scorpio rising. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2: with the Lagna lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, "physical felicity will diminish". Ch. 42 Sl. 4: the Lagna lord in the 8th while the Lagna or the Moon is with Ketu, a combination for penury. BPHS Ch. 31 reads an unobstructed Argala on the 8th as "difficulties", and Ch. 29 names its Arudha the Maran Pad; the Bhava Padas calculator and Argala calculator compute both.
Vipareeta yogas, and yogas a malefic here breaks
Because Mars rules two houses, it rules a Dusthana for six Ascendants, and in the 8th it then forms one of this app's Vipareeta Raja Yogas: Sarala for the 8th lord (Aries, Virgo rising), Harsha for the 6th lord (Gemini, Scorpio rising), Vimala for the 12th lord (Taurus, Sagittarius rising). The yogas calculator lists them. BPHS's own versions in Ch. 39 differ: Parashara's need a strong Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna and a debilitated, combust or enemy-sign Trika lord, while Sarala as coded here asks only for the 8th lord in a Trika house.
- BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 19: debilitated planets in the 3rd, 6th and 8th with a strong Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna. A Mars debilitated in Cancer sits in the 8th for Sagittarius rising, the kind of planet the verse asks for.
- Ch. 39 Sl. 29-31: a debilitated planet in the 6th or 8th aspecting the Lagna. From the 8th Mars aspects the 2nd, 11th and 3rd, not the Lagna, so it cannot be that planet.
- Lagn Adhi Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 37) needs benefics in the 7th and 8th free of malefic association, and Parvat Yog (Sl. 7-8) the 7th and 8th vacant or holding only benefics. A Mars in the 8th breaks both.
Two lordships for every rising sign
Mars is in your 8th when it occupies the eighth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 8th; its harsh clauses are kept below as the text's statements.
| Ascendant | Mars's sign | Natural dignity | Mars rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 8th | App yoga |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Scorpio | Own | 1st, 8th | Sl. 8: an accomplished scholar, sickly, thievish, given to much anger, a gambler. Sl. 92: long-lived; if weak, medium longevity and blameworthy | Sarala |
| Taurus | Sagittarius | Friendly (Jupiter) | 7th, 12th | Sl. 80: deprived of marital happiness; the wife troubled by diseases. Sl. 140: always gains, affable, a medium span | Vimala |
| Gemini | Capricorn | Exalted | 6th, 11th | Sl. 68: sickly, inimical, impure. Sl. 128: reversals in undertakings, a long life, the wife predeceasing him | Harsha |
| Cancer | Aquarius | Neutral (Saturn) | 5th, 10th | Sl. 56: not much progenic happiness; cough and pulmonary disorders. Sl. 116: "devoid of acts", long-lived, blames others | - |
| Leo | Pisces | Friendly (Jupiter) | 4th, 9th | Sl. 44: devoid of domestic comforts, little parental happiness, "equal to a neuter". Sl. 104: not prosperous, no happiness from the elder brother | - |
| Virgo | Aries | Own; Moolatrikona to 12 deg | 3rd, 8th | Sl. 32: a thief, serves others, "will die at the gate of the royal palace". Sl. 92: long-lived | Sarala |
| Libra | Taurus | Neutral (Venus) | 2nd, 7th | Sl. 20: abundant land and wealth; limited marital felicity. Sl. 80: deprived of marital happiness | - |
| Scorpio | Gemini | Enemy (Mercury) | 1st, 6th | Sl. 8: a scholar, sickly, given to anger. Sl. 68: sickly and inimical | Harsha |
| Sagittarius | Cancer | Debilitated | 5th, 12th | Sl. 56: not much progenic happiness. Sl. 140: always gains | Vimala |
| Capricorn | Leo | Friendly (Sun) | 4th, 11th | Sl. 44: devoid of domestic comforts. Sl. 128: a long life, reversals | - |
| Aquarius | Virgo | Enemy (Mercury) | 3rd, 10th | Sl. 32: a thief, serves others. Sl. 116: "devoid of acts", long-lived | - |
| Pisces | Libra | Neutral (Venus) | 2nd, 9th | Sl. 20: abundant land and wealth. Sl. 104: not prosperous | - |
Read as a column, the 8th takes from whatever house its occupant rules, with three exceptions: the 2nd lord gains land and wealth (Libra, Pisces rising for Mars), the 10th and 11th lords give long life while harming their own houses (Cancer, Aquarius; Gemini, Capricorn), and the 12th lord "always gains" (Taurus, Sagittarius). Long life recurs in Mars's rows more often than in most planets', because Mars often rules the 8th, 10th or 11th from here.
The 8th lord, through the houses
| 8th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | The verse |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 85 | Devoid of physical felicity; wounds; hostile to gods and Brahmins |
| 2nd | Sl. 86 | Devoid of bodily vigour, a little wealth, lost wealth not regained |
| 3rd | Sl. 87 | Devoid of fraternal happiness, indolent, devoid of servants and strength |
| 4th | Sl. 88 | "The child will be deprived of its mother"; devoid of house, lands, happiness |
| 5th | Sl. 89 | Dull-witted, few children, but long-lived and wealthy |
| 6th | Sl. 90 | Wins over enemies; afflicted by diseases; danger from snakes and water in childhood |
| 7th | Sl. 91 | Two wives; with a malefic there, a downfall in business |
| 8th | Sl. 92 | Long-lived; if weak, medium longevity, a thief, blameworthy |
| 9th | Sl. 93 | Betrays his religion, a heterodox, a wicked wife, steals others' wealth |
| 10th | Sl. 94 | Devoid of paternal bliss, a talebearer, no livelihood; a benefic aspect stops these maturing |
| 11th | Sl. 95 | With a malefic, devoid of wealth and unhappy early, happy later; with a benefic, long-lived |
| 12th | Sl. 96 | Spends on evil deeds, a short life, more so with a malefic there |
Why the app's line is always the testing one
The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable line only when its dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. In the 8th the second condition always fails. The favourable string, "resilience and durability when the house is well supported", which follows the Bhrigu Sutras' benefic exception, is never shown; every Mars in the 8th gets "health strain and reduced vitality". The same limit applies to every planet in the 8th; read the texts' exceptions instead.
dashaQuality() calls any planet in a Dusthana challenging, which matches BPHS Ch. 48 below. The summary sentence names Mars's dignity only when weak. The Mars Mahadasha page covers the period.
Strength in the 8th
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures Mars from the 4th; the 8th is four houses past the zero point, about two-thirds of the maximum in this engine's even steps. As a Panaphara the 8th gives half of Kendradi Bal, more than the 6th or 12th. The Shad Bala calculator shows all components. Strength is also what the longevity chapters ask for (Ch. 19 Sl. 7), and the Bhrigu Sutras' "strong 8th lord: full longevity" is a strength condition.
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 1-24, Mars by sign (pp. 76-78), adds a temperament line through the sign in your 8th: Capricorn (Gemini rising) wealthy, famous, a protector; Aries (Virgo rising) truthful, valorous, fierce; Scorpio (Aries rising) skilful, endowed with land, highly sinful, troubled by poison, fire, weapons and wounds; Cancer (Sagittarius rising) deformed, sick, repeatedly anguished; Libra (Pisces rising) loses his first wife, earns only to lose. Saravali Ch. 15 reads Mars with the Sun as valorous, dull-witted and a liar (Sl. 3), with Saturn as deceitful and fond of quarrels (Sl. 16), and with Jupiter as intelligent and expert in speech (Sl. 14).
Timing
Mars has 7 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 and 18-20 say a planet placed in the 8th at the start of its dasha gives adverse results and that the dashas of planets in the 8th are unfavourable; Parashara asks for the placement at birth and at the start of the period both to be considered. Ch. 47 Sl. 33 gives a weak Mars, or one in an inauspicious house, loss and distress. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make a 6th, 8th or 12th lord's dasha favourable when it is associated with a trine lord. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.
For Aries and Virgo rising Mars is the 8th lord, and this app's line for that period is "major transformation and financial caution - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha", with the source's death wording removed on purpose. Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator marks the 8th from the Moon testing for every planet, a different count from this house.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 18:00 IST on 26 October 2010 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Aries-rising case. Earlier the same evening the same Mars sits in the 4th and 5th of other Ascendants, worked on the Mars in the 4th and Mars in the 5th pages. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Aries 16.23 deg |
| Mars | Scorpio 4.74 deg, 8th house, Own sign; 1st and 8th lord |
| Moon | Taurus 19.23 deg, 2nd house, Exalted |
| Jupiter | Pisces 0.25 deg, retrograde, 12th house, Own sign |
| Saturn | Virgo 16.74 deg, 6th house |
| Sun, Mercury, Venus | Libra, 7th house |
| House line | Testing: phMars8U, although Mars is in its own sign |
| dashaQuality for Mars | Challenging |
| Yoga and dosha | Sarala Yoga; Mangal Dosha, Moderate |
| Shad Bala (engine, of 20) | 12.92, Medium; aspected by the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn |
Two benefics aspect this Mars: the exalted Moon from the 2nd and Jupiter from the 12th by its 9th aspect. That is the Bhrigu Sutras' exception (with a benefic, good health and long life), and it is the benefic aspect that takes the chart out of BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47. The engine still reports Mangal Dosha (Moderate), because its rule has no benefic exception, and Sarala Yoga, because the 8th lord is in a Dusthana. The house line is testing and the dasha grade challenging, both because of the house.
The lordship layer is the Aries case of BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22: the Lagna lord and 8th lord, in its own sign in the 8th, "helpful to auspicious Grahas". Ch. 24 Sl. 8 and Sl. 92 both apply. Mars aspects the 2nd (the Moon), the 11th and the 3rd (Ketu), so the commentator's 2nd-house derivation falls on an occupied house. Mars at 4.74 degrees is in the first ten of Scorpio, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results early in the period; the engine's sequence here opens with the Moon. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm Mars is in the eighth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Expect the testing line; check the Bhrigu Sutras' exception yourself: does a benefic join or aspect Mars?
- The same check decides BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47; compare it with the app's Mangal Dosha row.
- Find the 8th lord (the lord of Mars's sign) and the Lagna lord, as BPHS Ch. 19 asks.
- Find the houses Mars rules; if a Dusthana, look for Sarala, Harsha or Vimala in the yogas list.
- Look at your 2nd house, which Mars aspects, and at the 11th and 3rd, its other two aspects.
- Weigh strength with the Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators, as BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 7 asks; the Bhrigu Sutras' "strong 8th lord" is a strength condition too.
Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.
Readings to avoid
- "Mars in the 8th shortens life." The Bhrigu Sutras give good health and long life with a benefic; BPHS judges longevity from many factors together. This app computes no lifespan.
- "Mangal Dosha in the 8th is always the classical yoga." BPHS Ch. 80 exempts a Mars a benefic aspects or joins; this app does not.
- "An 8th lord is always harmful." BPHS Ch. 34 makes Mars helpful for Aries rising despite its 8th lordship, and says a planet owning a predominant house gives that house's results.
- "A Vipareeta yoga settles it." The yoga as coded here and BPHS's Ch. 39 versions are different rules; BPHS Ch. 24 reads several of the same placements harshly.
- "The app says testing, so Mars is weak." The line is fixed by the house.
- "Eyesight trouble is predicted." It is the commentator's derivation from an aspect, reported as such, not a diagnosis.
- "The 8th from my Moon in transit is my 8th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.
Questions about Mars in the 8th
- Is Mars in the 8th house bad?
- Saravali gives diseases, a short life and grief; the Bhrigu Sutras give eye and other diseases, a shorter life and few children, but a happy married life, and good health and long life with a benefic. Their commentator says malefics in the 8th shorten longevity, Saturn excepted.
- Does Mars in the 8th cause Mangal Dosha?
- In this app, yes, graded Moderate. BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47 lists the 8th too, but only for a Mars with no benefic aspecting or joining it, and the rule lapses when both partners have it.
- Why does the app always show the testing line?
- Its favourable line requires a house other than the 6th, 8th or 12th. The favourable string, which follows the Bhrigu Sutras' benefic exception, is never shown.
- What does Mars aspect from the 8th?
- The 2nd, 11th and 3rd houses. The commentator reads the aspect on the 2nd as trouble to a 2nd-house matter, eyesight.
- Does Mars in the 8th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
- In this app, when Mars rules a Dusthana: Sarala for Aries and Virgo rising, Harsha for Gemini and Scorpio, Vimala for Taurus and Sagittarius.
- Which rising signs give the strongest Mars in the 8th?
- By dignity, Gemini rising (exalted), Aries and Virgo rising (own sign). By lordship, Aries rising, where BPHS Ch. 34 calls Mars helpful despite ruling the 8th.
- Does Mars in the 8th say anything about marriage?
- The Bhrigu Sutras give a happy married life for Mars in the 8th. BPHS Ch. 80 lists the 8th among its Mars houses for a yoga of bereavement in marriage, with a benefic exception. The two readings sit side by side in the texts.
- Does Mars in the 8th affect inheritance?
- BPHS lists the wealth of the dead among the 8th's items, and Ch. 24 Sl. 20 gives the 2nd lord in the 8th abundant land and wealth (Libra and Pisces rising, for Mars). The Mars verses do not mention inheritance.
- Is a Mars dasha difficult with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 48 says planets in the 8th give unfavourable dashas, and this app grades any planet in a Dusthana as challenging. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 relieve a Dusthana lord's dasha when it is associated with a trine lord.
