What the classical texts say about Saturn in the 8th house, where the Bhrigu Sutras give it long life and Saravali a short one; why Saturn, the 8th house's significator, is treated as the exception among malefics; and why this app prints the testing line for every chart.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

Of the twelve house readings the sources give Saturn, this is the one with an open disagreement on the house's own subject. The Bhrigu Sutras give Saturn in the 8th a long life, longer still in its own sign or exaltation, and their commentator calls Saturn the exception among malefics in this house. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 81 read the same placement as a short life and failed undertakings. BPHS gives the reason the Bhrigu side leans as it does: Saturn is the 8th house's own fixed significator. This app sides with neither on that point and prints the testing line for every Saturn in the 8th.

This page sets the positions out and follows the placement through the engine. Most of what the texts say about the 8th concerns length of life; that material is reported as what the texts contain. It is not a prediction, this app computes no lifespan, and nothing here is medical advice. For the planet, see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 8th house, Randhra Bhava.

A note on sources and on longevity

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Bhavartha Ratnakar are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Ages, spans and death timing in the sources are not repeated.

The house and its significator

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 list the 8th as longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and things past and to come. Saravali Ch. 3 names it Vinasa and Dehavivara; BPHS Ch. 29 call its Arudha the Maran Pad. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make it a Panaphara, a Dusthana and a Chaturasra; Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 call the Dusthanas Trikas whose association inflicts evils, and the Bhrigu commentator calls the 8th "the worst Dusthana" (Mars in the 8th, p. 57). BPHS Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 still make the 8th, with the 3rd, a house of longevity, and place the Marak houses at the 2nd and 7th.

BPHS Ch. 32 list the fixed significators of the houses in order, and the 8th's is Saturn. The rest of the picture: BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 judge longevity, the source of one's maintenance, grief, danger and losses from Saturn; Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 read longevity from the 8th counted from Saturn; and the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction calls Saturn Ayush Karaka, the chief governor of longevity. A Saturn in the 8th is that significator in its own house. The inference fits in one line: the significator of the house sitting in the house strengthens the house's subject.

The disagreement

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 37-40

Sutras 37-40 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 105, corpus line 4166): a long life, given as an age, but poverty, a livelihood from serving others, and a line on low-caste women (named only); a still longer life in its own sign or exaltation; and, with the 8th lord in an enemy's sign or debilitated, a short life and a livelihood earned with difficulty, at times without food. The commentator states the exception outright: all malefics in the 8th shorten longevity, but Saturn in this house is believed to give good longevity. And he adds the price in the same breath: except for longevity, Saturn in the 8th gives only evil effects.

He also gives the mechanism for the poverty: "the native will face poverty as Saturn will afflict the second house by aspecting it". The same reasoning explains why the 8th-house Sun and Mars are said to trouble the eyes (pp. 26, 56), another 2nd-house matter. On longevity he quotes Bhavartha Ratnakar: Saturn in the 8th gives long life. Of the authorities quoted (p. 105), Brihat Jatak, Phaldeepika, Saravali and Chamatkar Chintamani all read it hard, and the Note says all agree that Saturn in the 8th gives evil effects generally.

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 81

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 81 (p. 105): disease of the anus or pudendum, "short life", and failure in undertakings. It is the general malefic rule applied without the exception. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 (printed "86-81") say malefics harm the houses they occupy except the 6th, 8th and 12th; read with that rule, a malefic in the 8th is in one of the excepted houses, which makes Saravali's hard verse for Saturn here the more striking. This page reports both readings and times nothing from either.

This app wrote two lines from the Bhrigu chapter. Favourable: "genuine longevity - Saturn tends to do better here than most malefics on this specific measure". Testing: "real hardship and difficulty earning a livelihood otherwise". The pair splits the commentator's sentence in two: the favourable line is his exception, the testing line is his "only evil effects". The testing line is the one the engine always shows.

Why the app always prints the testing line

The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable line only when it has strong dignity and is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. For every Saturn in the 8th the second condition fails. In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 9,851 had Saturn in the 8th, and every one printed the testing line; the dasha verdict was unfavourable and the quality challenging for all of them. That is the limit of the rule.

The sample also shows the dignity the rule sets aside: Saturn was in its own sign in 12.6 per cent of those charts, in Moolatrikona in 6.2, exalted in 7.5 and in a friendly sign in 20.8. Those are the cases where the Bhrigu Sutras speak of a still longer life, and the app's favourable line, which echoes that, is never selected for them.

Strength in the 8th

Strength runs the other way from the house rule. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 give Saturn full directional strength in the 7th, and the 8th is next to it, worth 3.33 of 4. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 give a planet in a Panaphara half of the positional strength called Kendradi Bala, twice what the 6th or 12th receive. In this app's strength run a Saturn in the 8th averaged 10.14 of 20 and was Strong in 23.1 per cent of charts, close to the 6th and behind only the 7th. The Shad Bala calculator shows each component. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 32-33 apply here more than anywhere: "Sani's extreme strength will give long life as well as miseries".

Vipareeta yogas, and the 8th lord in the 8th

The engine's Yogas calculator reports Harsha, Sarala or Vimala when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in a Trika. Saturn rules a Trika for six Lagnas, and in the 8th forms one for each: Sarala for Gemini and Cancer rising, where Saturn is the 8th lord at home; Harsha for Leo and Virgo rising, where it rules the 6th; Vimala for Aquarius and Pisces rising, where it rules the 12th. The engine follows a modern source here; the Bhrigu commentator quotes Uttara Kalamrita (under Jupiter in the 12th, p. 86); and BPHS reads some of the same placements differently.

For Sarala BPHS is unusually close. Ch. 24 Sl. 92 read the 8th lord in the 8th as long-lived, medium longevity if the planet is weak, the house's own subject strengthened, in contrast with Sl. 96, the 8th lord in the 12th, read as a short life. For Gemini and Cancer rising a Saturn in the 8th is the 8th lord in its own sign: Sl. 92's case, the Bhrigu Sutras' own-sign case and Sarala at once. For Vimala, Ch. 24 Sl. 140 read the 12th lord in the 8th as always gaining, affable and with good qualities, the nearest thing in BPHS to the later idea that Trika lords in Trika houses turn out well.

Your rising sign: Saturn's sign and the houses it rules

With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 8th is in the eighth sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 8th; clauses that brand a person are named in the caption rather than the cells.

The last column is the engine's Vipareeta rule.

Read together, the 10th and 11th lords in the 8th harm their own houses, the 2nd lord there gives abundant land and wealth, matching the house's own item, the wealth of the dead, and the best sloka belongs to the 12th lord. For Saturn, Aries and Taurus rising carry the costliest pair, two lordships BPHS otherwise reads well, losing their acts in the 8th; Taurus is the Lagna where BPHS make Saturn the Raja Yoga planet. Aquarius and Pisces rising carry the 12th-lord sloka, the gentlest in the column.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add three rules about the 8th lord that bear on Saturn. Its effects "will depend on association". If it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th it proves specifically harmful, which is Saturn for Cancer rising. If it owns a Kona at the same time it bestows auspicious effects, which is Saturn for Gemini rising, lord of the 8th and 9th. So the two Sarala Lagnas sit on opposite sides of the Ch. 34 rule.

Named combinations that a malefic in the 8th spoils, or completes

  • Lagn Adhi Yog, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 37: benefics in the 7th and 8th free of malefic conjunction or aspect. A Saturn in the 8th is the malefic that rules it out.
  • Parvat Yog, Ch. 36 Sl. 7-8: benefics in the angles, with the 7th and 8th vacant or holding only benefics. A Saturn in the 8th rules this out too.
  • Ch. 39 Sl. 19: debilitated planets in the 3rd, 6th and 8th while a strong Lagna lord aspects the Lagna, a Raj Yoga. A debilitated Saturn in the 8th, Virgo rising's case, can be one of them.
  • Ch. 39 Sl. 28: a debilitated lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th aspecting the Lagna. From the 8th Saturn aspects the 10th, 2nd and 5th, never the Lagna, so Saturn cannot be the planet this rule needs. (Sl. 29-31, cited here earlier, are a different Raj Yoga.)

The Ch. 39 verses and Sarala rest on one idea, a harmful house best served by a weak or tucked-away lord, but are not the same rule. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh any detected yoga.

Saturn's three aspects from the 8th

Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th places from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). From the 8th those fall on the 10th, the 2nd and the 5th, and the engine returns those three. The 2nd is the commentator's route to poverty; the 10th is the house of work and standing; the 5th is a trine. In the engine's Shad Bala each is a malefic aspect on any planet there. For the house of wealth, see the 2nd house.

The dignity label, and Saravali's sign verses

The house line ignores dignity, but the strength panel uses it. Strong regardless: Gemini and Cancer rising (own sign, Moolatrikona) and Pisces rising (exalted). Debilitated: Virgo rising. Friendly or Neutral by Venus or Mercury: Libra, Scorpio and Aquarius rising. Friendly or Enemy by Jupiter: Taurus and Leo rising. At best Neutral: Aries, Sagittarius and Capricorn rising.

Saravali Ch. 45 describes Saturn by dignity: exalted, royal assignments; in Moolatrikona, of good family, wealthy and valorous; in its own sign, honourable and happy; debilitated, adversity; in an enemy's sign, dirty and distressed; in a friend's sign, depending on others for food. Its Ch. 29 by sign gives, for the 8th-house cases that decide the dignity outright: Capricorn (Gemini rising), learned, honourable, famous; Aquarius (Cancer rising), eminent but "a great liar"; Libra (Pisces rising), rich, soft-spoken, honours from abroad; Aries (Virgo rising), worn down by hard labour. The Bhrigu Sutras' "livelihood from serving others" for this house and Saravali's "depending on others" for a friend's sign describe a similar dependence by separate routes.

Timing: the Saturn period, its releases, and Ashtama Sani

The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 describe the period of a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th as adverse, with an escape for a Saturn joined or aspected by a benefic, in an angle or trine, or in Sagittarius or Pisces. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 add that the dashas of planets placed in the 8th produce unfavourable effects, and Sl. 14-17 that the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord becomes favourable when associated with a trine lord. For Gemini rising Saturn is itself a trine lord, the 9th. The engine applies none of these releases. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

When Saturn rules your 8th, for Gemini and Cancer rising, the app shows the 8th lord's theme with the source's death wording removed: "major transformation and financial caution - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha". For transits, Saturn passing the 8th sign from the Moon is Ashtama Sani, which the Ashtama Sani calculator dates and the Gochar calculator marks testing. This site's 8th-house page notes that the source for that transit illustrates it with a death, which the app did not carry over. It is a statement about the Moon's eighth sign, not a natal Saturn in the 8th house.

Two more rules belong with the timing. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 13 read a planet associated with a Trika lord and lacking any aspect from a trine lord as harming finances in its own dasha; for the six Lagnas where Saturn rules a Trika, that is Saturn itself, and the trine lord's aspect is the stated exception. And BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44 (9286) read Saturn's transits through signs with more points in its own Ashtakavarga as favourable. In BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 59-60 only the Sun and Mercury give Saturn a point in the 8th place from themselves, two of eight, against seven in the 6th and eight in the 11th. The Ashtakavarga calculator shows how many your own 8th sign holds.

For Gemini rising Saturn rules the 8th and 9th, so this is the 8th lord in its own sign in the 8th: Ch. 24 Sl. 92's case, the Bhrigu Sutras' own-sign clause and the engine's Sarala together. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 would add that an 8th lord which also owns a Kona bestows auspicious effects, and Ch. 24 Sl. 104 read the 9th lord in the 8th as not prosperous. The engine prints the testing line and a challenging dasha quality for a Saturn it also labels Strong.

The Moon shares the 8th with Saturn, so by BPHS Ch. 45 the Moon is Kshudhita. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 311) says Sade Sati makes little difference to someone born with the Moon and Saturn together, which is this chart. No benefic joins or aspects Saturn: Jupiter in the 9th aspects the 1st, 3rd and 5th. The Moon in Shravana starts life in the Moon's own Mahadasha, and the Saturn period begins in 2070. Saturn at 14.75 degrees is in its middle decanate.

A second chart: exalted, and Vimala

For the Pisces case, the engine's output for 12:45 IST on 15 December 2012 in New Delhi gives a Pisces Ascendant at 6.41 degrees and Saturn at 14.00 degrees of Libra in the 8th, exalted and direct, Strong at 15.46 of 20. For Pisces rising Saturn rules the 11th and 12th, so the yoga list holds Vimala, and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 140 read the 12th lord in the 8th as always gaining. Sl. 128 read the 11th lord there as reversals in undertakings. The house line is testing and the quality challenging, and the dasha panel lists the 11th and 12th lords' themes, gains with obstacles and expenses.

This is the Bhrigu Sutras' exaltation case, where the sutras speak of a still longer life, and Saravali Ch. 45's exalted Saturn of royal assignments; it is also Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 81's 8th-house Saturn of failed undertakings. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 call Saturn a malefic and a maraka for Pisces rising. No benefic joins or aspects Saturn here, so Ch. 47's escape clause is not met. The Moon in Uttara Ashadha starts life in the Sun's Mahadasha, and the Saturn period begins in 2069.

Saturn in the longevity method

BPHS names Saturn inside its longevity chapters as a working part. Ch. 19 Sl. 1-3 read the 8th lord in an angle as long life, and Sl. 3 say to consider Saturn and the 10th lord in the same way. Ch. 43 Sl. 33-40 classify life as long, medium or short by whether pairs of factors fall in movable, fixed or dual signs, and one of the pairs is Saturn with the Moon. These are methods for a calculation this app does not make, and they are named here only because they show how central Saturn is to the 8th house in BPHS: the house's significator is also one of the inputs to its main question.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 give the counting reason the 8th is treated as difficult: the 8th lord "is not auspicious, as he owns the 12th from Dharm Bhava", the house of loss counted from the house of fortune. A Saturn in the 8th therefore sits in the 12th from the 9th, and from there aspects the 10th, the 2nd from the 9th. Saravali Ch. 15 reads Saturn with the Moon in one house as well liked by the public but under the control of others and without wealth, which bears on the worked chart above.

Checking a Saturn in the 8th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Saturn is in the 8th if it is in the eighth sign from your Ascendant.
  2. Expect the testing house line in every case; read the dignity label and Strength panel separately.
  3. Find what Saturn rules. Gemini and Cancer rising make it the 8th lord at home; look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala.
  4. Is a benefic joined to or aspecting Saturn, or is it in Sagittarius or Pisces? That is BPHS Ch. 47's escape clause for the period.
  5. Look at the 2nd house, which Saturn aspects from here: the commentator's route to poverty.
  6. Look at the 8th house's points in the Ashtakavarga table and the Maran Pada in the Bhava Padas calculator.
  7. Note when the Saturn periods run, and keep Ashtama Sani, counted from the Moon, separate.

The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.

Common misreadings

  • "Saturn in the 8th shortens life." Saravali says so; the Bhrigu Sutras and their commentator say the opposite for Saturn specifically. This app computes no lifespan.
  • "Saturn in the 8th gives long life, so it is a good placement." The same commentator adds that apart from longevity Saturn here gives only evil effects, and the sutras give poverty and service.
  • "The app says testing, so my Saturn is weak." Every Saturn in the 8th gets that line; Saturn there was Strong in nearly a quarter of the engine sample.
  • "Saturn in the 8th is Ashtama Sani." That is a transit counted from the Moon, not a natal house.
  • "Sarala Yoga makes Saturn in the 8th a Raj Yoga." It forms for Gemini and Cancer rising and follows a modern source; BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 92 read the same case in its own terms.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturn in the 8th house good or bad?
The sources disagree. The Bhrigu Sutras give a long life with poverty and service, longer in own sign or exaltation, and their commentator calls Saturn the exception among malefics here and in his Note sides with long life; Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 81 give a short life and failed undertakings. This app prints the testing line for every Saturn in the 8th.
Why is Saturn treated as the exception in the 8th?
BPHS Ch. 32 name Saturn the 8th house's fixed significator, and the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction calls it Ayush Karaka; the significator in its own house is read as strengthening the house's subject. The commentator also quotes Bhavartha Ratnakar that Saturn in the 8th gives long life.
Does Saturn in the 8th form a Vipareeta yoga?
When Saturn rules a Trika: Sarala for Gemini and Cancer rising, Harsha for Leo and Virgo, Vimala for Aquarius and Pisces.
What does Saturn aspect from the 8th house?
The 10th, the 2nd and the 5th houses. The Bhrigu commentator reads its aspect on the 2nd as the source of the placement's poverty.
Is the Saturn Mahadasha bad for a Saturn in the 8th?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 read it unfavourably, and the app grades it challenging. BPHS gives an escape for a benefic's contact or Jupiter's signs, and a release through a trine lord; the app applies neither.
Is Saturn in the 8th the same as Ashtama Sani?
No. Ashtama Sani is Saturn transiting the 8th sign from the natal Moon, dated by the Ashtama Sani calculator. A natal Saturn in the 8th is counted from the Ascendant.
Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
See Saturn in the 7th house and Saturn in the 9th house; for a benefic in the same house, Venus in the 8th house.
