Saturn's Mahadasha runs for nineteen years out of the 120-year Vimshottari cycle. It follows Jupiter's sixteen years and hands over to Mercury's seventeen. No period is talked about with more dread, and BPHS itself introduces Shani in harsh words. Yet the same chapter opens its Saturn passage with a list of gains, and attaches the losses to stated conditions. This page sets out those conditions with chapter and sloka, and shows how to check each one with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the birth chart calculator. For Saturn as a graha in general, read Saturn in Vedic astrology first.
What this page is and is not
It reports what three texts say and how this app's code applies one of them. It does not predict what your nineteen years will contain. BPHS Ch. 57 attaches ritual remedies and lifespan warnings to most sub-periods; this app carries over neither, and neither does this page. Classical lines about the body are reported as what the text says and are not medical advice.
Nineteen years of 120: the arithmetic
BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12-14 gives the Vimshottari order starting from Krittika: Surya, Candr, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukr. Shani is sixth in that list. The engine stores the same cycle rotated to begin with Ketu, the lord of the first nakshatra: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. The nine numbers add to 120. Rotation does not change the order: Saturn always comes after Jupiter and before Mercury. The general mechanics are covered in what a Mahadasha actually is.
Nineteen years is 15.83 percent of the cycle. Only Venus, at twenty, is longer. In the engine one dasha year is 365.2425 days, so a full Saturn Mahadasha is 6,939.6 days. The only Saturn Mahadasha that can be shorter is one you are born into. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 16 says the elapsed part is found from how far the Moon had already travelled through the birth nakshatra, and the engine does exactly that, multiplying nineteen years by the unelapsed fraction of the nakshatra.
When the Saturn Mahadasha arrives
The lord of the birth nakshatra starts the sequence. The engine takes the Moon's nakshatra index (0 to 26) modulo 9, and index 7 in the Ketu-first cycle is Saturn. Three nakshatras fall on that index: Pushya, Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada. A person whose Moon was in one of those three at birth is born inside a Saturn Mahadasha and lives out its remaining part in childhood and youth. Everyone else meets it later, at an age fixed by the lord they started with. The nakshatra calculator shows your starting lord.
| Lord of your birth nakshatra | Latest age Saturn Mahadasha begins | Latest age it ends |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn | Birth (already running) | 19 |
| Jupiter | 16 | 35 |
| Rahu | 34 | 53 |
| Mars | 41 | 60 |
| Moon | 51 | 70 |
| Sun | 57 | 76 |
| Venus | 77 | 96 |
| Ketu | 84 | 103 |
| Mercury | 101 | 120 |
What BPHS says: Chapter 47
Chapter 47 opens with a distinction that governs everything after it. Sl. 2 says dasha effects are of two kinds, general and distinctive: the general ones come from the natural character of the graha, the distinctive ones from its placement. Sl. 3-4 add that effects are "in accordance with their strength". Sl. 5-6 then give the test this app codes directly: results are favourable if, at the commencement of the dasha, the lord is in the Lagna, in its exaltation, in its own sign or in a friendly sign; unfavourable if it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, in debilitation, or in an inimical sign.
Sl. 52 introduces Shani as the graha "considered the vilest and most inferior" of all. That is a statement about Saturn's natural character, the "general" side of Sl. 2. What follows is the distinctive side, in two blocks, and the first of them is entirely favourable.
- Sl. 53-56, the strong case. If Shani is in exaltation, in its own sign, in its Moolatrikona or a friendly sign, in its own or exalted Navamsa, and in the 3rd or 11th house, the text lists recognition by government, opulence, name and fame, success in education, conveyances and ornaments, gain of wealth, a high position "like Commander of an Army", gain of property and birth of children.
- Sl. 57-60, the weak case. If Shani is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, in its debilitation sign, or combust, the text lists harm from poison and weapons, separation from the father, distress to spouse and children, and trouble arising from the displeasure of government, including imprisonment.
- Sl. 57-60, the closing clause. If Shani receives the aspect of, or is associated with, a benefic, or is placed in a Kendra or a Trikon, or is in Dhanu (Sagittarius) or Meen (Pisces), the text returns to the favourable list: a kingdom, conveyances and clothes.
Three things in this passage are easy to miss. First, the strong case is longer and more generous than the weak one; Parashara does not treat a well-placed Saturn as a lesser evil but as a period of position and property. Second, the houses named for strength are the 3rd and 11th, two of the houses where malefics are traditionally read as doing well, and not the Kendras that the Jupiter passage names. Third, the closing clause gives a benefic aspect or the two signs of Jupiter the power to turn the result.
Checking these conditions takes more than one screen. Sign dignity and house are on the main chart. The Navamsa conditions need the D9, which the Navamsa calculator draws; Navamsa, the second chart explains why a planet can be strong in one and weak in the other. Combustion is a matter of how close Saturn is to the Sun. Benefic aspect means checking whether Jupiter, Venus, Mercury or a strong Moon looks at Saturn or shares its sign.
The timing rule inside the dasha
Sl. 3-4 say a graha in the first Dreshkan (the first ten degrees of its sign) gives its effects at the start of its dasha, one in the second Dreshkan in the middle, and one in the third at the end; a retrograde graha reverses the order. For a nineteen-year period those thirds are about six years and four months each. Saturn is retrograde for a part of every year, so the reversal applies in many charts. You can see which third Saturn occupies from its degree, or on the Drekkana calculator.
What Saturn rules in your chart: Chapter 48
Chapter 48 moves from the graha to its job in a particular chart. Sl. 1 states the principle: a naturally inauspicious graha that is exalted and placed in an auspicious house does not give bad results, and a benefic that is debilitated and badly housed does. That is the direct classical answer to the idea that Saturn's period must be hard because Saturn is a malefic. Sl. 2-8 then give a result for the dasha of each house lord. Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius, two adjacent signs, so in every chart it rules two neighbouring houses.
| Lagna | Houses Saturn rules | This app's theme for those houses (BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-8) |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 10th and 11th | Career recognition and advancement; gains that come with some obstacles |
| Taurus | 9th and 10th | Growth in education, spirituality and unexpected gains; career recognition and advancement |
| Gemini | 8th and 9th | Major transformation and financial caution; growth in education and unexpected gains |
| Cancer | 7th and 8th | Strain in partnership and marriage; major transformation and financial caution |
| Leo | 6th and 7th | Friction with rivals or health matters; strain in partnership |
| Virgo | 5th and 6th | Progress in education and happiness through children; friction with rivals or health matters |
| Libra | 4th and 5th | Gains in property, home comforts and vehicles; progress in education and children |
| Scorpio | 3rd and 4th | An effort-heavy, more testing period; gains in property and home comforts |
| Sagittarius | 2nd and 3rd | Financial and family matters needing extra care; an effort-heavy period |
| Capricorn | 1st and 2nd | Physical vitality and personal growth; financial and family matters needing extra care |
| Aquarius | 12th and 1st | Expenses or health matters needing attention; physical vitality and personal growth |
| Pisces | 11th and 12th | Gains with some obstacles; expenses or health matters needing attention |
For Taurus, Saturn rules a Trikon and a Kendra together, the 9th and 10th. For Libra it rules the 4th and 5th, again a Kendra and a Trikon. For Cancer and Leo it rules the 7th, which Sl. 18-20 treat as a Marak house, together with a dusthana. BPHS Ch. 34 gives its own verdict for each rising sign, and the engine stores it in YOGA_KARAKA_BY_LAGNA. Saturn is listed as auspicious for Taurus, Libra and Aquarius, and as the Yoga Karaka for Taurus. It is listed as inauspicious for Aries, Leo, Scorpio and Pisces, and among the Marak grahas for Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius and Pisces. For Gemini, Virgo and Capricorn it appears in neither list. Your rising sign comes from the Lagna calculator, and it needs a birth time.
Chapter 48 also softens its own verdicts. Sl. 14-17 say the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord becomes favourable if it associates with a Trikon lord, and that a graha aspected by a Kendra or Trikon lord also gives a favourable dasha. Sl. 8 adds a rule the engine does not apply: the graha's placement "at the time of birth and at the commencement of the Dasha should both be taken into account".
The nine antardashas of the Saturn Mahadasha
BPHS Ch. 51 Sl. 1 gives the rule for a sub-period: multiply the dasha years of the two grahas and divide by the total years of all. Sl. 2 says the first Antar Dasha always belongs to the dasha lord, and the rest follow in the usual order. Inside Saturn that order is Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter. The engine uses one function, subdivideVimshottari(), for this split and for the level below it. The mechanics are explained in Antardasha, Pratyantardasha, and why the dates slide.
| Antardasha | Share of the 19 years | Length (30-day months) | Length in engine days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturn-Saturn | 19/120 | 3 years 0 months 3 days | 1,098.8 |
| Saturn-Mercury | 17/120 | 2 years 8 months 9 days | 983.1 |
| Saturn-Ketu | 7/120 | 1 year 1 month 9 days | 404.8 |
| Saturn-Venus | 20/120 | 3 years 2 months | 1,156.6 |
| Saturn-Sun | 6/120 | 11 months 12 days | 347.0 |
| Saturn-Moon | 10/120 | 1 year 7 months | 578.3 |
| Saturn-Mars | 7/120 | 1 year 1 month 9 days | 404.8 |
| Saturn-Rahu | 18/120 | 2 years 10 months 6 days | 1,040.9 |
| Saturn-Jupiter | 16/120 | 2 years 6 months 12 days | 925.3 |
BPHS Ch. 57 gives each of these nine sub-periods a favourable reading and an unfavourable one, each tied to a condition. The conditions are of four kinds: the sub-lord's own dignity; its house from the Lagna; its position counted from Saturn, the dasha lord; and whether it rules or sits in the 2nd or 7th. This chapter is also unusually specific about which part of a sub-period a result belongs to. The summaries below keep the conditions and leave out the remedies and lifespan lines.
Saturn-Saturn (Sl. 1-7)
If Shani is in its own sign, in exaltation, in a Kendra or Trikon, or is a Yoga Karaka: happiness from spouse and children, conveyances, clothes, a commanding position by favour of the ruler, cattle, villages and land. If Shani is in the 8th or 12th, or debilitated with malefics, the text divides the trouble by thirds: fear from the ruler and bodily complaints at the commencement, danger from thieves, leaving the homeland and mental distress in the middle, and then "the last part of the Dasha will yield beneficial results". Even the adverse reading of the opening three years ends well.
Saturn-Mercury (Sl. 8-15)
If Budh is in a Kendra or Trikon: reverence from people, good reputation, gain of wealth, comforts of conveyances, enthusiasm, well-being in the family, pilgrimage and charity; the text names Raj Yog among the effects. If Budh is in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Lagna or from Saturn, or is with the Sun, Mars and Rahu, the order runs the other way: gains and local authority at the commencement, then failure in ventures, anxiety and ill health in the middle and last parts. Mercury is one of Saturn's two natural friends in the engine's table.
Saturn-Ketu (Sl. 16-23)
This is the one sub-period the chapter reads as difficult almost regardless of dignity. Sl. 16-18 list loss of position, poverty, distress and foreign journeys "even if" Ketu is exalted, in its own sign, in a Kendra or Trikon, or aspected by benefics. Two exceptions follow. If Ketu is related to the Lagna lord, there is gain of wealth and a visit to a sacred place at the start. If Ketu is in a Kendra, a Trikon, the 3rd or the 11th from Saturn, the text gives strength, courage, religious thoughts and an audience with those in authority. Ketu in the 8th or 12th from the Lagna or from Saturn gives coarse food, fever, danger from thieves and separation from family.
Saturn-Venus (Sl. 24-36)
The longest sub-period, a little over three years. If Shukr is in a Kendra, Trikon or the 11th with benefic association or aspect: marriage, birth of a child, wealth, sound health, honours, clothes, ornaments and conveyances. If Shukr is debilitated, combust, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th: distress to the spouse, loss of position, mental strain and quarrels with close relations. Shukr in the 9th, 11th or a Kendra from Saturn gives fulfilled ambitions, charity, interest in the Shastras and poetry, and happiness from the family. Shukr in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Saturn gives a list of bodily complaints (the text names the eyes, teeth, heart and arms) and antagonism with officials and brothers.
Where BPHS brings transit into a dasha
Sl. 24-27 contain one of the few places where the chapter combines the two timing layers. During the Venus sub-period, "if Guru is favourable in transit, there will be dawn of fortune and growth of property", and if Shani is favourable in transit, Raj Yog effects follow. The text does not define "favourable in transit" here. This app shows the current transit position of each graha counted from your natal Moon on the gochar calculator.
Saturn-Sun (Sl. 37-42)
If Surya is exalted, in its own sign, associated with the 9th lord, or in a Kendra or Trikon with benefic association or aspect: good relations with the employer, well-being in the family, happiness from children, conveyances and cattle. If Surya is in the 8th or 12th from the Lagna or from Saturn: defamation, loss of position, mental distress, separation from relatives, obstacles in ventures and fevers; the text also names the heart. The Sun is one of Saturn's natural enemies in the engine's table, and this is the shortest sub-period, under a year.
Saturn-Moon (Sl. 43-54)
If Candr is full, exalted or in its own sign, in a Kendra or Trikon, in the 11th from Saturn, or aspected by benefics: conveyances, garments, ornaments, improvement of fortune, care of siblings and happiness in both parental homes. If Candr is waning, with or aspected by malefics, debilitated, or in a malefic's sign or Navamsa: distress, anger, separation from parents, losses in business and irregular meals, though Sl. 46-48 add that there will be "good effects and some gain of wealth at the commencement". A weak Candr in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Saturn gives sleepiness, lethargy, loss of position and more enemies.
Saturn-Mars (Sl. 55-62)
If Mangal is exalted, in its own sign, or associated with the Lagna lord or with Saturn itself: enjoyments, wealth, reverence from the ruler, a commanding position, growth in agriculture and cattle, a new house and happiness to relatives, and the text says these come "from the very commencement". If Mangal is debilitated, combust, or in the 8th or 12th with malefic association or aspect: loss of wealth, danger of wounds, thieves and weapons, distress to father and brothers, quarrels with partners, foreign travel and unnecessary expenditure.
Saturn-Rahu (Sl. 63-70)
The default reading is adverse: Sl. 63-64 list quarrels, mental and bodily distress, antagonism with children, unnecessary expenditure, trouble from government, foreign journeys and loss of house and land, if Rahu is not in exaltation "or any other auspicious position". The favourable case is detailed. If Rahu is with the Lagna lord or a Yoga Karaka, exalted or in its own sign, or in a Kendra or the 11th from the Lagna or from Saturn: enjoyment, wealth, better harvests, pilgrimage and family well-being at the commencement, and cordiality with the ruler and happiness from friends in the middle. Sl. 68 names six signs for Rahu that give opulence: Mesh, Kanya, Kark, Vrishabh, Meen and Dhanu.
Saturn-Jupiter (Sl. 71-82)
If Guru is in a Kendra or Trikon, associated with the Lagna lord, or in its own or exaltation sign: all-round success, family well-being, conveyances, ornaments and clothes by favour of the ruler, association with the learned, and happiness from spouse and children. If Guru is debilitated, with malefics, or in the 6th, 3rd or 12th: loss of wealth, antagonism with officials, failure in projects and foreign journeys. Counted from Saturn, Guru in the 5th, 9th, 11th, 2nd or a Kendra gives opulence, fame in the country and interest in the Vedas; a weak Guru in the 6th, 8th or 12th from Saturn gives quarrels, loss of position and fines or penalties. This closing sub-period of about two and a half years leads into Mercury's Mahadasha.
One level further: pratyantardashas
BPHS Ch. 61 Sl. 1 repeats the proportional rule at the third level. Inside the 1,098.8-day Saturn-Saturn antardasha the nine pratyantars run about 174.0 days (Saturn), 155.7 (Mercury), 64.1 (Ketu), 183.1 (Venus), 54.9 (Sun), 91.6 (Moon), 64.1 (Mars), 164.8 (Rahu) and 146.5 (Jupiter). Sl. 47-55 give each a one-line result, and Sl. 2 warns that such lines "are general effects" which do not appear where the graha is well placed: Shani-Shani, physical distress and quarrels; Budh, anxiety, quarrels and loss of wealth; Ketu, confinement, hunger and anxiety; Shukr, fulfilment of ambitions, family well-being and success in ventures; Surya, authority conferred by the ruler together with quarrels at home; Candr, development of intelligence and the start of a large venture, with heavy expenditure; Mangal, loss of courage and danger from fire and enemies; Rahu, loss of wealth and land and going abroad; Guru, losses that cannot be prevented, and quarrels.
Saravali: favourable and adverse Saturn, under a different scheme
Kalyana Varma's Saravali describes dasha results in Ch. 41, but under its own Moola Dasa scheme, in which the order and length of periods come from planetary strength and not from the Moon's nakshatra. Its dates therefore do not match Vimshottari dates. Its account of what a planet's period is like is still a second classical opinion.
- Sl. 48-49, favourable Saturn: gain of camels and asses, gain through pulses, sesamum and the grains eaten by poor people, leadership over villages, gain through iron, and a permanent position for one's people.
- Sl. 50-51, adverse Saturn: loss of conveyances, enmity, separation from spouse and family, a liking for intoxicants and gambling, confinement, lassitude, "windy diseases" and enmity with children and servants. The bodily terms are the text's association, not a diagnosis.
Saravali Ch. 42 then gives one flat sentence for each sub-period (bhukti) in Saturn's dasa, with no conditions attached. Set beside BPHS Ch. 57 they show where the two sources agree and where they do not.
| Sub-period in Saturn | Saravali Ch. 42 | Compared with BPHS Ch. 57 |
|---|---|---|
| Sun (Sl. 48) | Destruction of wealth, distress to spouse and children, fear from enemies | Matches the BPHS adverse case only |
| Moon (Sl. 49) | Separation from spouse and relatives, or enmity with them | Matches the BPHS adverse case only |
| Mars (Sl. 50) | Leaving the country in adverse circumstances, illness and grief | Matches the BPHS adverse case only |
| Mercury (Sl. 51) | Fortune, happiness, success, honour and financial gain | Matches the BPHS favourable case |
| Jupiter (Sl. 52) | A high position, villages, happiness from spouse | Matches the BPHS favourable case |
| Venus (Sl. 53) | More friends, freedom from grief, fame, wealth and success | Matches the BPHS favourable case |
The pattern is plain. Saravali reads the sub-periods of the Sun, Moon and Mars as hard and those of Mercury, Jupiter and Venus as good. The first three are exactly the grahas the engine's friendship table lists as Saturn's natural enemies; Mercury and Venus are its two natural friends. BPHS makes all six conditional on the sub-lord's own state. Saravali then qualifies itself: Ch. 42 Sl. 54-57 say the sub-period effects "stand modified according to the exaltation, fall etc. of the planet", that a combust planet's period damages wealth and enthusiasm, and that the dasa of a planet inimical to the Ascendant lord or to the Moon-sign lord goes badly.
A modern casebook view
Advanced Predictive Astrology, a 2000 collection of worked charts, adds rules of thumb from practice. They are one author's compilation, several of them quoted from magazine articles, and not classical slokas. They are reported here as such.
- Saturn-Venus. Rule 35 in its chapter on good and bad time says that Saturn-Venus and Venus-Saturn periods are usually "very bad for any native", but that an aspect of Jupiter turns the results in a favourable direction. Elsewhere the book cites Bimala Kanti Lahiri's view that Saturn-Venus gives the results of Saturn-Saturn, and that the Venus sub-period in Saturn's dasa is beneficial when Venus is a benefic for the Lagna. This sits directly against BPHS Sl. 24-27 and Saravali Sl. 53, both of which describe a favourable Venus sub-period. The sources disagree, and the casebook does not hide that its own authorities disagree with each other.
- Saturn as the fourth dasha. Rule 37(a) lists Saturn's dasha as inauspicious when it is the fourth a person lives through. By the sequence, that is the case for anyone born under a Mars nakshatra, since Mars, Rahu and Jupiter come first. The book gives no reasoning for the rule, and neither classical text here contains it.
- Rise in Saturn's period. The same book discusses two Scorpio-rising political leaders who rose to power in Saturn's dasha, and explains it by Saturn giving the results of the Moon and Mars it was joined with or disposed.
How this app reads a Saturn Mahadasha
The function that produces the dasha reading on the Kundali and Timing pages is buildDashaLordEffects() in kundaliEngine.js. It codes BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 and nothing more elaborate. For Saturn it looks up the sign, computes the dignity, reads the house, and returns a verdict.
- Dignity: the engine's table has Saturn exalted in Libra, in Moolatrikona in the first twenty degrees of Aquarius, in its own sign in the rest of Aquarius and in Capricorn, and debilitated in Aries. Any other sign is classed as friendly, neutral or enemy from the fivefold relation between Saturn and that sign's lord, which combines natural friendship (Mercury and Venus are Saturn's friends; the Sun, Moon and Mars its enemies) with their positions in your chart.
- Favourable: Saturn is exalted, in Moolatrikona, in its own sign or in a friendly sign, or is in the 1st house; and it is not debilitated or in an enemy sign; and it is not in the 6th, 8th or 12th.
- Testing: everything else. A neutral-sign Saturn outside the Lagna is therefore "testing" in the two-way verdict.
The sentence you see is built from a template. A favourable result says Saturn is in its dignity in its sign and house, "classically read as a favourable placement for this Mahadasha", tending toward "hard-won but durable results - recognition, advancement and long-term security through sustained effort". A testing result says "classically read as a more testing placement", tending toward "a demanding, restrictive period requiring patience - delays and pressure rather than outright loss". The engine does not reproduce the poison, weapons and imprisonment of Sl. 57-60. The words "classically read as" are kept in every language to mark the claim as the tradition's, not as a prediction by this app.
What the engine does not do
It does not apply the Ch. 57 antardasha conditions, positions counted from Saturn, Navamsa dignity, combustion, the Dreshkan timing rule, or placement at the commencement of the dasha. Two differences from Ch. 47 Sl. 53-60 follow. The source names the 3rd and 11th houses for the strong case; the engine, following Sl. 5-6, gives a house bonus only to the 1st. And the source lets a benefic aspect, a Kendra or Trikon, or Sagittarius or Pisces rescue a weak Saturn; the engine does not test that clause. Those conditions are on this page so you can check them by hand. Planetary positions are computed as described on the methodology page, and the texts are listed under sources.
Saturn Mahadasha is not Sade Sati
The two are constantly confused, and they are different mechanisms. The Mahadasha is a nineteen-year slot in a sequence fixed by the Moon's nakshatra at birth; the sky today plays no part in its dates. Sade Sati is a transit: in this app's computeSadeSati() it is the period when Saturn in the present sky occupies the 12th, 1st or 2nd sign counted from your natal Moon sign, roughly seven and a half years. A person can be in a Saturn Mahadasha with no Sade Sati, in Sade Sati under any Mahadasha, or in both at once. The Sade Sati calculator answers the transit question; the dasha calculator answers the other.
Checking a Saturn Mahadasha in your own chart
- Get the dates. Run the Vimshottari Dasha calculator. It returns the full timeline, the Mahadasha running today and its nine antardashas. It needs the date of birth; the birth time sharpens the Moon's position and therefore every boundary.
- Find Saturn's sign and house on the birth chart. Apply Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 and 57-60: exaltation, own sign, Moolatrikona or a friendly sign, and the 3rd or 11th house, on one side; debilitation, combustion, or the 6th, 8th or 12th house on the other.
- Apply the closing clause. Is Saturn joined or aspected by a benefic, in a Kendra or Trikon, or in Sagittarius or Pisces? If so, Sl. 57-60 return it to the favourable list.
- Find which two houses Saturn rules from your Lagna, using the table above, and read the Ch. 48 theme for each. Then check whether Saturn is joined or aspected by a Kendra or Trikon lord (Sl. 14-17).
- Count houses from Saturn to each of the other eight grahas. Mark those in a Kendra, Trikon or the 11th from Saturn, and those in the 6th, 8th or 12th from it. This one pass sorts the nine sub-periods the way Ch. 57 does.
- Check strength and yoga. The Shad Bala calculator shows Saturn's computed strength against the other grahas, and the yogas calculator reports Sasa Yoga, the Panchamahapurusha yoga formed by Saturn, when your chart has it. The app describes that yoga's trait as "resilient and strategic, values self-reliance, builds through sustained effort".
Saturn's house is the single most informative fact in step 2, and each placement has its own page: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. If you would sooner ask about your own dates in plain language, the AI chat answers from the same computed chart and dasha data.
Common misreadings
- "Saturn's dasha is nineteen bad years." BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 list fame, wealth, property and high position for a well-placed Saturn before saying a word about loss. Ch. 48 Sl. 1 says an exalted, well-housed malefic does not give bad results.
- "A weak Saturn means the whole period is lost." Sl. 57-60 allow a benefic aspect, an angular or trinal house, or Jupiter's signs to reverse the result, and Ch. 57 Sl. 4-5 say the last part of even an afflicted Saturn-Saturn sub-period is beneficial.
- "Saturn Mahadasha and Sade Sati are the same thing." One is a birth-fixed period, the other a transit. Their dates are computed from different inputs and seldom line up.
Before and after: the neighbours
Saturn's period is always entered from Jupiter's Mahadasha and always exits into Mercury's. The other periods are covered on their own pages: Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Venus and Ketu. Vimshottari is also not the only system in BPHS; the alternate dashas calculator shows the conditional systems from Ch. 46 that apply to your chart.
Questions people ask
- How long is the Saturn Mahadasha?
- Nineteen years of the 120-year Vimshottari cycle, the second longest after Venus. The engine counts a year as 365.2425 days, so a full period is 6,939.6 days. It is shorter only if you were born during it, in which case you live out the part remaining at birth.
- At what age does it start?
- It depends on the lord of your birth nakshatra. At the latest: birth for a Saturn nakshatra (Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada), 16 for Jupiter, 34 for Rahu, 41 for Mars, 51 for Moon, 57 for Sun, 77 for Venus, 84 for Ketu and 101 for Mercury. Your actual age is earlier by the part of the first period already elapsed at birth. The dasha calculator gives the exact dates.
- Is Saturn Mahadasha bad for everyone?
- No source used here says so. BPHS Ch. 47 gives a strong case with fame, wealth and position, a weak case, and a clause that rescues the weak case. Ch. 34 lists Saturn as auspicious for Taurus, Libra and Aquarius Lagnas and as the Yoga Karaka for Taurus. The result is read from your chart, not from the name of the planet.
- Which antardasha in Saturn Mahadasha is the hardest?
- The texts do not rank them, but two stand out in BPHS Ch. 57. Saturn-Ketu is read as difficult "even if" Ketu is dignified, with exceptions only when Ketu is related to the Lagna lord or well placed from Saturn. Saturn-Rahu is adverse by default unless Rahu is in an auspicious position. Every other sub-period has a full favourable reading.
- Is Saturn Mahadasha the same as Sade Sati?
- No. The Mahadasha is fixed by your birth nakshatra. Sade Sati is the transit of Saturn through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your natal Moon. They can overlap or not. The Sade Sati calculator checks the transit.
- Does the app suggest remedies for a difficult Saturn period?
- No. BPHS Ch. 57 prescribes recitations and gifts for nearly every sub-period. This app does not carry over remedies, gemstones, mantras or donations from any source.
