Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Saturn in the 1st house, where Saravali's verdict turns entirely on dignity; Sasa Yoga; why Saturn has no directional strength in the Lagna; and how this app decides whether your Saturn in the 1st reads as favourable.

Saravali gives Saturn in the Ascendant one of the starkest either-or verses in its chapter on houses. In its own sign or exaltation, the native is "equal to a king", at the head of a city or a country. In any other sign, a hard childhood and indolence. The verse stands out for exactly that: the Saturn sloka turns entirely on whether Saturn is in its own or exaltation sign. Most of what follows on this page is an account of that one condition, what else the texts set beside it, and how this app's engine draws the same line.

This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone. For the planet itself, start with Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 1st house, Tanu Bhava. This page does not repeat those two in full; it works out what happens when they meet.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Uttara Kalamrita are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

The house and the planet

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2 list the 1st house as physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, weakness, happiness, grief and innate nature. Ch. 32 make the Sun its fixed significator, and Ch. 7 make it a Kendra and, with the 5th and 9th, a trine. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 draw the consequence for its lord: the Lagna lord is specially auspicious. Saturn is an occupant of your 1st in every case, and its lord only for Capricorn and Aquarius rising.

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 count Saturn among the natural malefics, and Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 make it the second strongest of them, after Mars. Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 give it grief to govern. Saravali Ch. 4 adds an exception unique to Saturn (line 472): where a strong significator normally magnifies what it signifies, "in the case of Saturn it is different". The Bhrigu Sutras' introduction pushes back on the reputation, calling Saturn much maligned and describing a well-placed Saturn as grave, prudent and reliable. All three views bear on a Saturn sitting in the house of the self.

What the texts say about Saturn in the 1st

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 74: the either-or verse

In its own sign or exaltation, the native is "equal to a king", heading a city or a country. In other signs, Ch. 30 Sl. 74 (p. 105) gives "misery in boyhood, dirty disposition and indolence". The verse has no middle case. A Saturn in a friend's sign gets the second reading in Saravali's own words, which matters because this app treats a friendly sign as strong; more on that below.

BPHS Ch. 12: a malefic in the Lagna

BPHS Ch. 12, the 1st house's own chapter, says a benefic in the Lagna gives a pleasing appearance and a malefic takes it away (Sl. 4), and that bodily health suffers when the Lagna or the Moon is joined or aspected by a malefic with no benefic aspect alongside (Sl. 3). The second half of Sl. 3 is the important part: a malefic with a benefic aspect beside it is a different case. Reading "malefic in the Lagna" as a verdict is a misreading for two reasons: Sl. 3 needs the missing benefic aspect, and Saravali gives a rising Saturn in its own or exaltation sign one of the strongest descriptions in its chapter.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 1-7

Sutras 1-7 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 98, corpus line 3890): rheumatic and bilious disease for a Saturn in the Lagna; exalted in Libra, lordship over a village or town and financial and agricultural prosperity; in its own sign, a rich father; in the sign of the 4th or 10th lord, "very fortunate" with Maharaja yoga. A line on livelihood by begging when the Moon aspects Saturn is cancelled by a benefic aspect from Jupiter or Venus. The commentator (pp. 98-99) reads the 4th or 10th lord's sign as Sagittarius or Pisces rising and quotes Uttara Kalamrita that Saturn in the Ascendant in Pisces, Libra or Sagittarius brings wealth, and a king if Jupiter and Mercury do not touch the 7th; he adds his own view of good prosperity and long life. Of the authorities quoted (pp. 99-100), Brihat Jatak and Phaldeepika split the reading by sign, as Saravali does: kingly or a headman in Sagittarius, Pisces, Capricorn, Aquarius or Libra, a hard and unclean childhood otherwise; Chamatkar Chintamani gives property with greed and narrowness.

This app wrote two lines from the Bhrigu Sutras' Saturn chapter for this house. Favourable: "real endurance and self-mastery - capable of forming Sasa Yoga in own sign or exaltation, a classically strong placement". Testing: "a heavier, more effortful start in life under real affliction". The provenance comment beside them records that the chapter was read in full, that its disease predictions were dropped, and that one 1st-house line about earning a livelihood by begging was dropped too. It also records the two points the chapter keeps repeating: Saturn in its own sign or exaltation in an angle forms Sasa Yoga, and Saturn does unusually well in the 6th and 11th.

Directional strength: Saturn's zero point is the Lagna

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measure each planet's directional strength from a fixed point, and for Saturn that point is the Lagna itself. Its directional strength is nil in the 1st and full in the 7th, the West, which BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38 call the one direction where Saturn alone gains strength. The engine follows it: a Saturn in the 1st gets 0 of 4 directional points in the Shad Bala calculator.

The cost shows in the totals. In this app's strength run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, a Saturn in the 1st averaged 6.92 of 20, the lowest of the twelve houses, and was labelled Strong in only 2.9 per cent of charts. A Saturn in the 7th averaged 10.80 and was Strong in 31.3 per cent. Saturn's natural strength is the lowest of the seven in both texts and in the engine (0.125 of 1), so it has little to fall back on. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 30-31 add that a house Saturn occupies loses one Rupa of house strength, a calculation this engine does not make.

Sasa Yoga, and how common it is here

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Sasa when Saturn is in its own sign or exaltation in an angle. The Lagna is an angle, so Saturn in the 1st forms Sasa for exactly three rising signs: Libra (exalted), Capricorn (own sign) and Aquarius (Moolatrikona to 20 degrees, own sign after). These are also the three signs where Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 74 gives its kingly reading, so on this placement the yoga and the house verse coincide. The Yogas calculator reports it.

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 20-22 describe the Sasa native as valorous and wise, at home in forests and mountains, alert to an opponent's weak points, a ruler over several regions, with lines on women and others' wealth; Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 8-10 add an army chief, skilful in every assignment and devoted to his mother, and less flatteringly crafty and quick to find fault. In the engine sample, Sasa formed in 24.5 per cent of the 10,249 charts with Saturn in the 1st. Because Saturn stays in a sign for two to three years, the yoga is shared by a large slice of everyone born in that span with the right rising sign, which is the reason to weigh any yoga with care.

A wealth combination is built on the same placement. BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 15 make Saturn in the Lagna in its own sign, joined or aspected by Mars and Jupiter, a wealth yoga. That is Capricorn or Aquarius rising with two particular planets in contact, and the engine checks it.

Your rising sign: Saturn's sign and the houses it rules

With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 1st is in your rising sign, which fixes its dignity and the two adjacent houses it rules. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord in the Lagna, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 name Saturn's role for each Lagna.

Four rows deserve comment. Taurus rising puts the one Lagna's Yoga Karaka in the Lagna, in a friend's sign: BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 say Saturn causes Raja Yoga there, and Ch. 24 Sl. 97 and Sl. 109 are both warm. Libra rising gives the exalted case, with Saturn as lord of the 4th and 5th, which Ch. 34 call auspicious and which the Bhrigu commentator and Advanced Predictive Astrology call the Yoga Karaka. Aries rising is the reverse: Saturn debilitated in the Lagna, and malefic by lordship. Gemini rising is the split case, a friend's sign but the 8th-lord sloka that speaks of a lack of physical felicity.

Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add a principle that helps with the malefic rows: malefics owning Kendras do not remain inauspicious, and Sl. 14 say that holds fully only when the malefic also owns a trine. For a Saturn in the Lagna that means Taurus (10th and 9th) and Libra (4th and 5th), the same two Lagnas for which Sl. 13 would make one planet owning an angle and a trine specially a Yoga Karaka.

Saravali's sign chapter, and Jupiter's signs

Saravali Ch. 29 (pp. 95-98) reads Saturn sign by sign, independent of house. Because a Saturn in the 1st is in the rising sign, each of those verses applies to one Lagna here. Libra: rich, soft-spoken, money and honours from abroad, a king or a scholar. Capricorn: learned in scripture and many arts, honourable, famous, capable, courageous. Aquarius, the Moolatrikona sign, gets one of the chapter's harshest entries: eminent but "a great liar" and very ill-tempered. Aries, the fall: worn down by hard labour, poor and short-tempered.

The two signs of Jupiter are the surprise. Saravali reads Saturn in Sagittarius as skilled in teaching, known for good children and his own merits and well off in old age, and in Pisces as first among relatives and friends with growing wealth and later authority. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator on Saturn in the 1st (p. 99), citing Uttara Kalamrita, and BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 also treat Saturn in Jupiter's signs as favourable. The engine grades both signs Neutral by nature, and turns them Friendly or Enemy only by where Jupiter sits from Saturn. For Sagittarius and Pisces rising, then, three texts read the rising Saturn better than Saravali's own house verse does, and the engine can go either way.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints the favourable 1st-house line when Saturn is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign. The 1st is not a dusthana, so dignity decides. For other signs the engine combines Saturn's natural relation to the sign lord (Mercury and Venus friends, Jupiter neutral, the Sun, Moon and Mars enemies) with a temporary relation read from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Saturn is a temporary friend.

  • Always favourable: Libra (exalted), Capricorn and Aquarius (own sign or Moolatrikona) rising.
  • Never favourable: Aries rising, Saturn debilitated.
  • Favourable if Venus or Mercury is well placed from Saturn: Taurus, Gemini and Virgo rising; otherwise Neutral.
  • Friendly or Enemy, decided by Jupiter alone: Sagittarius and Pisces rising.
  • At best Neutral: Cancer, Leo and Scorpio rising, with Saturn in a sign of the Moon, the Sun or Mars.

A difference from the Saturn page

The Saturn in Vedic astrology page says the engine read Saturn's planet-in-house and dasha dignity from the natural relation only, "in the code as it stood when this page was written". In the code read for this page, the house line, the dasha verdict and the dasha quality all pass the chart to the dignity function, so the temporary relation is applied. The groups above describe the current code.

Here the engine and Saravali part company. The engine treats a Friendly sign as strong and prints the favourable line; Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 74 gives the kingly reading only in own sign or exaltation. For Taurus, Gemini and Virgo rising with a well-placed Venus or Mercury, the app says favourable while Saravali's verse, read literally, says hard start. In the engine sample, the favourable line printed for 44.7 per cent of Saturn-in-the-1st charts, of which Friendly sign made up 20.1 points and own sign, Moolatrikona and exaltation together 24.5.

The Lagna clause and the dasha line

The dasha verdict follows a different rule for this house. buildDashaLordEffects() reads a period as favourable when the lord has strong dignity or sits in the Lagna, unless it is debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a dusthana; BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 name the Lagna first among the good positions for a dasha lord. So a Neutral Saturn in the 1st prints a testing house line and a favourable dasha verdict. In the sample that lifted the favourable dasha share to 71.9 per cent, against 44.7 for the house line. The three-step dashaQuality() has no Lagna clause and reads such a Saturn neutral. The Saturn Mahadasha page covers the period in full.

Saturn's three aspects from the Lagna

BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give Saturn full special aspects on the 3rd and 10th places from itself as well as the universal 7th. From the 1st that means the 3rd house, the 7th and the 10th, and the engine's aspectedHouses() returns exactly those three. As a malefic aspect, each one counts against a planet sitting there in the engine's Shad Bala. Two geometric facts follow: Saturn's 3rd aspect is never returned, and its 10th aspect is returned only by Mars. A Saturn in the Lagna looks at the house of partnership, the house of work and the house of effort at once.

None of the texts cited here states a separate result for these aspects from the 1st. For what the houses hold, see the 7th house and the 10th house. The Saturn in the 7th house page treats the opposite placement, where Saturn's directional strength is full.

Saturn beside other planets in the Lagna

Two rules about company apply with particular force in the 1st. BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 put any planet joined with Saturn in the Kshudhita state, the same state as a planet in an enemy's sign. A Saturn in the Lagna with the Moon, the Lagna lord or any other planet puts that planet in Kshudhita; this engine does not compute the states. And BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 11 tell the reader to judge the Moon as a second Lagna, so a Saturn sitting with the Moon in the 1st is a malefic on both reference points at once.

Saravali Ch. 15 gives readings for two planets in one house, and has six Saturn pairs: with Jupiter, heroic, wealthy, famous, the head of an assembly, the one plainly favourable pairing; with the Moon, well liked by the public but under the control of others; with Mercury, debts and pride but an able poet; with Venus, a skilled worker in wood or a painter; with the Sun and Mars, the chapter's harder pairs. Sloka 23 says each result rises or falls with the vargas the two planets occupy.

Timing: the Saturn period, Sade Sati and the Lagna

The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15), and a Moon in Pushya, Anuradha or Uttara Bhadrapada begins life in it. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 describe a strong Saturn's period as recognition, a high position, property and success; Sl. 57-60 describe the reverse for a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated or combust, and then add an escape clause: a Saturn joined or aspected by a benefic, in an angle or a trine, or in Sagittarius or Pisces, gives position and comforts instead. A Saturn in the 1st is in an angle and a trine at once, so it meets that clause by position. The engine does not apply the clause. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 add that a dasha lord in the first decanate shows its effects early in its period and in the last decanate late, reversed for a retrograde planet, which Saturn is in more than a third of charts (36.5 per cent of the Saturn-in-the-1st sample). When Saturn rules your Lagna, for Capricorn or Aquarius rising, the app adds the 1st lord's theme from BPHS Ch. 48, "physical vitality and personal growth".

Transits are counted from the Moon, not the Lagna. In the Gochar calculator Saturn over the natal Moon sign is testing and flagged as its intensified position, and it is also the peak of Sade Sati. That is a statement about the Moon's sign. A natal Saturn in the 1st house from the Lagna is a different thing, unless the Moon is in the Lagna too. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 311) says Sade Sati makes little difference to someone born with the Moon and Saturn together.

This is the case Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 74 calls equal to a king: Saturn exalted in the Ascendant. Sasa forms, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 call Saturn auspicious for Libra as lord of the 4th and 5th, so Ch. 24 Sl. 37 and Sl. 49 apply. The house line, the dasha verdict and the dasha quality all agree. Strength does not: with no directional strength in the Lagna, no motional credit for a retrograde Saturn in this engine, and no benefic aspect recorded, the total is Medium.

The company matters. The Moon shares the Lagna with Saturn, so by BPHS Ch. 45 the Moon is Kshudhita, and by Ch. 12 Sl. 3 both reference points carry a malefic; the engine records only Ketu's aspect on Saturn, so no benefic aspect offsets it. Rahu is in the Lagna too. The Moon in Chitra starts life in Mars's Mahadasha, and the Saturn period runs from age 34 to 53. Saturn at 17.33 degrees is in its middle decanate, which Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the middle of the period, retrograde or not.

Checking a Saturn in the 1st in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator. Saturn is in the 1st if it is in your rising sign. Its sign stays fixed for two to three years; its house changes every couple of hours with the Ascendant.
  2. Is Saturn in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius? That is Saravali's condition for the kingly reading and the condition for Sasa.
  3. If not, note where the sign lord sits from Saturn: it decides whether the engine reads Friendly, Neutral or Enemy.
  4. Read the Ch. 34 role and the two Ch. 24 slokas for your Lagna in the table above.
  5. Is there a benefic aspect on the Lagna, from Jupiter in the 5th, 7th or 9th or any benefic in the 7th? That is BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3's condition.
  6. What shares the Lagna with Saturn? Each planet there is Kshudhita by BPHS Ch. 45.
  7. Check strength in the Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators, and note when the Saturn periods run.

The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.

Common misreadings

  • "Saturn in the Lagna is always bad." Saravali gives it one of the strongest readings in its chapter in own sign or exaltation, and BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3 needs the absence of a benefic aspect before it reads harm.
  • "Favourable in the app means Saravali's kingly reading." The app counts a friendly sign as strong; Saravali's verse names only own sign and exaltation.
  • "Saturn is strong in the 1st because it is an angle." Its directional strength is nil there; in the engine sample Saturn in the 1st averaged the lowest strength of any house.
  • "Sasa Yoga is rare." It formed in about a quarter of Saturn-in-the-1st charts, because only three rising signs are involved and Saturn stays in a sign for years.
  • "Saturn in the 1st means Sade Sati from birth." Sade Sati is counted from the Moon. Only when the Moon is also in the Lagna do the two coincide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturn in the 1st house good or bad?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 74 answers by sign: equal to a king in its own sign or exaltation, a hard childhood and indolence otherwise. BPHS Ch. 12 reads a malefic in the Lagna as harm to appearance and, without a benefic aspect, to health.
Does Saturn in the 1st form Sasa Yoga?
For Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, where Saturn is exalted, in its own sign or in Moolatrikona in an angle. In this engine's sample it formed in 24.5 per cent of Saturn-in-the-1st charts.
Why does the app say Saturn in the 1st is weak in strength?
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measure Saturn's directional strength from the Lagna, so it is nil there; Saturn also has the lowest natural strength of the seven. In the sample it averaged 6.92 of 20.
What does Saturn aspect from the 1st house?
The 3rd, 7th and 10th houses: the universal 7th aspect and Saturn's two special aspects (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5).
For which rising signs is a Saturn in the 1st most useful?
By lordship, Taurus, where BPHS Ch. 34 make Saturn the Raja Yoga planet, and Libra, where it is auspicious as lord of the 4th and 5th and exalted. By dignity, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius.
Why is the dasha line favourable when the house line is testing?
The dasha verdict counts a planet in the Lagna as favourable unless it is debilitated or in an enemy sign, following BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6; the house line needs strong dignity. A Neutral Saturn in the 1st gets one of each.
Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
See Saturn in the 2nd house and, for a benefic in the same house, Venus in the 1st house.
