What the classical texts say about Saturn in the 2nd house, where Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras disagree outright; the BPHS penury rules that name Saturn here; how your rising sign changes the reading; and how this app decides favourable or testing.

Saturn in the 2nd is one of the plain disagreements among the sources. Saravali gives Saturn in the 2nd worldly prosperity, with the person apart from their own people and earning abroad later in life. The Bhrigu Sutras see stringency: in want of money, and with a malefic beside Saturn, no land. BPHS adds two rules of its own that name Saturn in this house and read it as a strain on wealth, each with a stated reversal. This app's engine, meanwhile, can print a favourable house line and a financial-caution flag for the same Saturn on the same chart.

This page sets those statements out with their sources and follows the placement through the engine. It is a map of rules, not a statement about anyone's money. For the planet, see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 2nd house, Dhana Bhava.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The 2nd is also a Marak house in BPHS Ch. 44; that classification is named and not applied, and this app computes no lifespan.

The house: wealth, food, speech and family

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 3 list wealth, grains and food, family, metals and precious stones, with death and enemies as the two harder items. Ch. 13 Sl. 12-13 add the eyes and truthful speech. Saravali Ch. 3 names the house Artha and Dhana, means and wealth, and Kutumba, the household. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make it a Panaphara, neither an angle nor a trine nor a dusthana, which is why BPHS judges it mostly through its lord. Saravali adds that planets in Panapharas give their effects in middle age.

Saturn arrives as the second strongest natural malefic in BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, the planet of grief in Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13, and, in the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction, the planet of land, property and heavy labour. The 2nd-house chapter's first rule meets it head on: BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 say "a benefic in Dhan will give wealth, while a malefic instead will destroy wealth." Saturn in the 2nd is the second half of that sentence.

Three sources, three readings

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 75: prosperity at a distance

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 75 (p. 105): "an ugly face, will enjoy worldly prosperity, be devoid of his own men, will render justice, will later on ... go to other countries and will earn money and conveyances". It is a mixed verse but not a poor one. The money is there; the family and the home country are what the person stands apart from. Set beside the house's three names, Saravali's Saturn gives Artha and Dhana and withholds Kutumba.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 8-9: stringency

Sutras 8-9 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 100, corpus line 3962): in want of money, and two wives, which the translator reads as a first wife dying and a second marriage. With a malefic beside Saturn: no lands, eye trouble, a line on women, and charge of a Matha. It is one of the shortest planet passages for the 2nd and one of the bleakest. The commentator (p. 100) names seven Lagnas where Saturn here, as lord of a good house, leaves the native well off: Aries, Taurus, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn. Of the authorities quoted (pp. 100-101), Brihat Jatak gives great riches taken away by a king, and Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani wealth gained after leaving home; the Note says those wealthier readings hold when Saturn rules a good house. The disagreement is plain: Saravali allows worldly prosperity and money earned later abroad, where Bhrigu sees only stringency. This page does not resolve it.

This app wrote its lines from the Bhrigu chapter and softened them in a way that leans toward lordship. Favourable: "wealth and family stability built slowly through discipline, genuinely strong when Saturn rules a good house here". Testing: "real financial stringency and strain in family life". The testing line is the Bhrigu reading; the favourable line is closer to Saravali, with a condition about the house Saturn rules added.

BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 16-18: two named rules

BPHS Ch. 42, the chapter on combinations for penury, ends with three rules about the 2nd house, and two involve Saturn directly. First, Mars and Saturn together in the 2nd are read as wealth destroyed, reversed outright if Mercury aspects them; with whole-sign aspects that means Mercury in the 8th. Second, Saturn in the 2nd aspected by the Sun is given the same reading as the Sun in the 2nd aspected by Saturn: want. The Sun has only the 7th aspect, so this means the Sun in the 8th. These are the only Ch. 42 rules the app checks, because they need nothing but placement and aspect.

What softens the general rule

BPHS rarely calls a chart poor on the 2nd house alone. Every poverty sloka in Ch. 13 (Sl. 6-8) turns on the 2nd lord and the 11th lord together: Sl. 6-7 ask for both in evil houses with a malefic in the 2nd, or both combust or with malefics, and Sl. 8 adds Mars in the 11th and Rahu in the 2nd. A Saturn in the 2nd supplies the malefic, and only the malefic. If your 2nd lord is in the 2nd, an angle or a trine (Sl. 1-2), or your 11th lord is well placed, the Sl. 6-7 combination does not form. The 2nd and the 11th are read as a pair throughout.

Two further points cut the same way. Ch. 13 Sl. 10 read a 2nd lord in its own sign or exalted as someone who looks after their people, helps others and becomes known; for Sagittarius and Capricorn rising Saturn is the 2nd lord, and in the 2nd it sits in its own Capricorn or Aquarius. And Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 (printed "86-81") state the general malefic rule with a range attached: results run from maximum to nil according to strength, aspect and dignity. The rule itself says it is graded.

One harder rule stacks on top. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 13 read the 2nd house and its lord both joined by malefics as speech that is untruthful. A Saturn in the 2nd meets half of that by sitting there; the other half is about the 2nd lord's company. Ch. 13 Sl. 12 tie the eyes to the 2nd lord; that is a classical association, not a diagnosis.

Your rising sign: Saturn's sign and the houses it rules

With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 2nd sits in the sign after your Ascendant, and rules the two adjacent houses where Capricorn and Aquarius fall. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 2nd.

Read with the app's own favourable line in mind, "genuinely strong when Saturn rules a good house here", the table sorts itself. Taurus rising brings the Yoga Karaka into the 2nd as lord of the 9th and 10th, with two warm slokas. Aries rising brings the 10th and 11th lords, also warm in Ch. 24, though BPHS Ch. 34 class Saturn a malefic there. Capricorn and Sagittarius rising make Saturn the 2nd lord at home, the Ch. 13 Sl. 1 and Sl. 10 case. Gemini and Cancer rising bring the 8th-lord sloka that says lost wealth is not regained, and both put Saturn in an enemy's sign.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 37-38 call Saturn a maraka for Sagittarius rising, where it rules the 2nd. Combined with its placement in the 2nd and the Ch. 44 statement that malefics in the 2nd are Marakas, this is the Lagna where the maraka label attaches to Saturn most firmly. It is a classification from the longevity chapters; this app does not use it.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Saturn is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign; the 2nd is not a dusthana. For other signs the engine combines Saturn's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation read from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Saturn is a temporary friend.

  • Always favourable: Virgo rising (Saturn exalted in Libra), Sagittarius and Capricorn rising (own sign or Moolatrikona).
  • Never favourable: Pisces rising, Saturn debilitated in Aries.
  • Favourable if Venus or Mercury sits well from Saturn: Aries, Taurus and Leo rising; otherwise Neutral.
  • Friendly or Enemy, decided by Jupiter: Scorpio and Aquarius rising.
  • At best Neutral: Gemini, Cancer and Libra rising, with Saturn in a sign of the Moon, the Sun or Mars.

In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,343 had Saturn in the 2nd, and 45.8 per cent printed the favourable line. The test does not look at the 2nd lord or the 11th lord, which BPHS Ch. 13 treats as decisive, or at the Sun's aspect. That last omission is covered by a separate engine check, described next.

The Dhan Bhava Caution flags

The engine's dosha list implements the two Ch. 42 rules. "Dhan Bhava Caution (Saturn)" appears when Saturn in the 2nd receives the Sun's aspect, and "Dhan Bhava Caution (Mars-Saturn)" when the two share the 2nd, marked mild, or reversed when Mercury's aspect is present. The wording is the app's own: "classically read as a period calling for financial caution rather than a fixed loss". The flag and the house line are computed independently, so an own-sign Saturn in the 2nd with the Sun in the 8th prints both a favourable house line and a caution flag, as the worked chart below does. The yogas and doshas calculator lists them.

Saturn's nearness rules make the Sun case less common than it might look. The Sun has to be in the 8th house, opposite Saturn, which happens roughly once a year for a few weeks as the Sun passes the sign opposite Saturn. For the Mars case, Mars has to be in the same sign as Saturn, and for the reversal Mercury has to be in the 8th.

Saturn's three aspects from the 2nd

BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give Saturn the universal 7th aspect and two special ones, the 3rd and 10th. From the 2nd those fall on the 8th, the 4th and the 11th, and the engine's aspectedHouses() returns those three. Each is a malefic aspect in the engine's Shad Bala. The 11th is the 2nd's partner house in every Ch. 13 rule, and the 4th is the house of the home and comforts; the texts cited here state no separate result for Saturn aspecting either from here. For the 4th, see the 4th house.

Strength, motion and the Kshudhita state

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measure Saturn's directional strength from the Lagna, nil there and full in the 7th. The 2nd is one house along, and the engine gives 0.67 of 4 directional points. In the strength run over the same charts, Saturn in the 2nd averaged 7.62 of 20 and was Strong in 6.8 per cent. The engine marks Saturn combust within 15 degrees of the Sun and gives a retrograde Saturn no motional credit; it earns that point only in Gemini or Virgo. The Shad Bala calculator shows each component.

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 put any planet joined with Saturn in the Kshudhita state. In the 2nd that includes the 2nd lord whenever it sits there with Saturn, and any benefic that might otherwise count as the benefic in Dhan that Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 want. The engine does not compute avasthas.

Timing: the Saturn period, the 2nd lord and transits

The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 describe a strong Saturn's period as recognition, position and property; Sl. 57-60 describe the reverse for a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated or combust, with an escape clause for a Saturn joined or aspected by a benefic, in an angle or trine, or in Sagittarius or Pisces. The 2nd is none of the escape positions, so for this house the clause turns on a benefic's contact or on Jupiter's signs. The engine applies neither. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

When Saturn rules your 2nd, for Sagittarius or Capricorn rising, the app adds the 2nd lord's theme from BPHS Ch. 48, with the death language removed: "financial and family matters - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha". The sub-period chapters list a sub-lord placed "in a Kendr, Trikon, in Dhan, or Labh" among the good positions, and flag a lord of Dhan or Yuvati for bodily distress (Ch. 60, line 7613, among others). Occupying the 2nd is supportive in that formula; ruling it carries the caution.

For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon, and Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon is one of its favourable malefic positions. The same sign is the setting phase of Sade Sati, and the app shows both verdicts without netting them. Neither is a statement about a natal Saturn in the 2nd house from the Lagna.

Two more Moon-based rules use the same position and are easy to confuse with this one. Saravali's lunar-yoga chapter (line 2177) reads Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon as Sunapha Yoga, skilful, respected in one's town and wealthy: a kinder verdict on Saturn next to the Moon than Saravali gives Saturn next to the Lagna. And BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 43-45, on the sign-based dashas, read a planet whose period is otherwise favourable, placed in a Marak house, as displeasure of government and loss of wealth. That rule stays inside the Rasi dashas.

For Sagittarius rising Saturn rules the 2nd and 3rd, and here it is the 2nd lord in its own sign in the 2nd. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1 read the 2nd lord in its own house as promoting wealth, Sl. 10 add that the person looks after their people, and Ch. 24 Sl. 14 read it as wealthy and proud. The app's favourable line and good dasha quality follow from the own sign.

The Sun sits in the 8th, so BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 16-18's second rule is met exactly, and the engine raises its caution flag. Mars is not in the 2nd, so the Mars-Saturn rule does not arise. The 11th lord, Venus, is in its own sign in the 6th, a dusthana, and the 2nd lord is Saturn itself, at home, so the Ch. 13 Sl. 6-7 poverty combination is not met. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 37-38 call Saturn a maraka for this Lagna. Saravali's verse would add prosperity at a distance from one's own people; the Bhrigu Sutras would say want of money. The Saturn Mahadasha begins only in 2070; Saturn at 4.22 degrees is in its first decanate and retrograde, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 read as reversing the timing to the end of the period.

A second chart: both Ch. 42 rules at once

A search through the engine's output finds the rarer case at 15:16 IST on 8 June 2016 in New Delhi: a Libra Ascendant at 3.02 degrees, with Saturn (18.65 degrees, retrograde) and Mars (2.13 degrees, retrograde) together in Scorpio in the 2nd, and the Sun, Mercury and Venus in Taurus in the 8th. Both Ch. 42 rules apply. The Mars-Saturn flag comes out reversed, because Mercury in the 8th aspects the 2nd; the engine words it as "turning this into a source of real financial gain instead". The Saturn flag stays mild, because the Sun in the 8th aspects Saturn too.

So one chart carries one BPHS rule that reads great wealth and another that reads want, on the same house, from the same chapter, and the engine shows both. Mercury sits at 0.03 degrees of Taurus, a few minutes past the sign boundary; a birth a little earlier would have put Mercury in Aries, in the 7th, and the reversal would not have applied. For Libra rising Saturn rules the 4th and 5th, which BPHS Ch. 34 call auspicious, and sits in Scorpio, a sign of its enemy Mars. None of this is a statement about any person; it shows how mechanically the rules combine.

Saravali's sign chapter, and the Hora

Saravali Ch. 29 (pp. 95-98) reads Saturn by sign. For the dignified 2nd-house cases: Libra (Virgo rising), rich, soft-spoken, money and honours from abroad; Capricorn (Sagittarius rising), learned in scripture and many arts, honourable, famous; Aquarius (Capricorn rising), eminent but "a great liar" and very ill-tempered. Aries (Pisces rising), the fall, reads worn down by hard labour and poor. The Libra verse's money from abroad lines up with Saravali's 2nd-house verse, later earnings abroad. And for Scorpio and Aquarius rising, where Saturn in the 2nd is in Jupiter's Sagittarius or Pisces, Saravali's sign verses are among its kindest: good children and comfort in old age, and growing wealth with later authority.

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 read wealth from the Hora, the second division, as well as from the birth chart. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 13-16 have Saturn, with the Moon and Venus, showing its effects most in the Moon's Hora. The Hora (D2) calculator reports which Hora each planet falls in, so a Saturn in the 2nd can be checked against the division BPHS itself assigns to wealth.

Checking a Saturn in the 2nd in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Saturn is in the 2nd if it is in the sign after your Ascendant.
  2. Find Saturn's dignity and, for a non-dignified sign, where the sign lord sits from Saturn.
  3. Where is the Sun? In the 8th, it meets the BPHS Ch. 42 rule and the app flags it. Is Mars in the 2nd with Saturn, and Mercury in the 8th?
  4. Find your 2nd lord and 11th lord: in the 2nd, an angle or a trine (Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2), or both in the 6th, 8th or 12th (Sl. 6-7)?
  5. Read the two Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Saturn rules, and note whether Saturn rules a good house, which the app's own line makes the condition.
  6. Check strength in the Shad Bala calculator and the wealth division in the Hora (D2) calculator, which BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to wealth.
  7. Note when the Saturn periods run, and keep transits, counted from the Moon, separate.

For money and work read together, see the Career and Money view. The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books.

Common misreadings

  • "Saturn in the 2nd means poverty." The Bhrigu Sutras read it that way; Saravali gives worldly prosperity; BPHS needs the 2nd and 11th lords damaged too before its poverty combinations form.
  • "The app says favourable, so the caution flag must be wrong." They test different things: dignity for the house line, the Sun's aspect for the flag. Both can hold at once.
  • "Saturn in the 2nd damages speech." BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 13 need the 2nd lord with malefics as well as the house.
  • "Saturn in the 2nd is Sade Sati." Sade Sati is counted from the Moon; this is a natal house counted from the Lagna.
  • "An own-sign Saturn in the 2nd is pure good news." For Sagittarius rising it is also the maraka lordship BPHS Ch. 34 names.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturn in the 2nd house bad for money?
The sources disagree. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 75 gives worldly prosperity and money earned later abroad; the Bhrigu Sutras give want of money and no land; BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 1-2 say a malefic in the 2nd destroys wealth but make poverty depend on the 2nd and 11th lords as well.
What is the Dhan Bhava Caution flag?
The app's version of BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 16-18: Saturn in the 2nd aspected by the Sun (the Sun in the 8th), or Mars and Saturn together in the 2nd, reversed if Mercury aspects. It is worded as a period calling for financial caution, not a fixed loss.
What does Saturn aspect from the 2nd house?
The 4th, 8th and 11th houses, by its 3rd, 7th and 10th aspects.
For which rising signs is a Saturn in the 2nd strongest?
By dignity, Virgo (exalted), Sagittarius and Capricorn (own sign or Moolatrikona). By lordship, Taurus, where Saturn is the Yoga Karaka, and Aries, where it rules the 10th and 11th.
Does Saturn in the 2nd affect family life?
Saravali reads the person as apart from their own people, and the app's testing line speaks of strain in family life. BPHS judges the family side mainly through the 2nd lord.
Is the Saturn transit in the 2nd from my Moon the same thing?
No. The Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and reads Saturn there as favourable; Sade Sati calls the same sign its setting phase. A natal Saturn in the 2nd is counted from the Lagna.
Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
See Saturn in the 1st house and Saturn in the 3rd house.
