Saturn in the 3rd is one of the placements where the classical texts' hard view of Saturn relaxes. The 3rd is an Upachaya, a growing house, and the Bhrigu Sutras commentator says malefics there "are said to give benefic results" (Mars in the 3rd, p. 49); under Saturn he says it outright, courageous and wealthy. Saravali gives courage, charity and great intelligence. BPHS Ch. 47 lists the 3rd, with the 11th, among the positions that make a Saturn period favourable. The cost the sources name is to younger siblings, and BPHS attaches a condition to that cost in the very next sloka.
This page sets out those statements with chapter and sloka and follows the placement through this app's engine. It is a map of rules, not a statement about your family. For the planet, see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava.
A note on sources
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. This app computes nothing about siblings, and BPHS Ch. 14's sibling counts are not used.
The house: valour, co-born and the growing houses
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 4 list the 3rd house as valour, servants or attendants, brothers and sisters, initiatory instruction, journeys and the death of a parent. Ch. 32 narrows the family meaning to younger siblings and names Mars as the house's fixed significator. The Bhrigu Sutras add memory, firmness, neighbours, short travel, writing, contracts, and the hands and arms.
BPHS Ch. 7 and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 make the 3rd an Upachaya and an Apoklima. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say a planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives difficult results, the 3rd being the mildest of the three. The line is clear: occupying the 3rd is treated kindly for a malefic, owning it is treated with suspicion. Saturn occupies your 3rd in every case covered here, and owns it only for Scorpio and Sagittarius rising.
What the texts say about Saturn in the 3rd
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 76
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 76 (p. 105): "dark in complexion, will maintain physical cleanliness, be base, will have indolent attendants, be courageous, charitable and will have great intelligence". With the 6th (Sl. 79) it is one of the two Saturn-in-house verses Saravali gives warmly, and there is a pattern across the natural malefics in its 3rd-house verses: the Sun, Mars and Saturn all receive courage there. Saturn's verse is the only one of the three that adds charity and great intelligence, and "base" and the indolent attendants are its sour notes, the second a point about the house's "servants" item.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 10-13
Sutras 10-13 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 101, corpus line 4009): loss of brothers, or no younger brothers; a livelihood from undesirable trades; in its own sign or exalted, a good number of brothers; with a malefic, enmity towards brothers. The commentator (p. 101) adds the general principle in Saturn's own words: as a malefic in an Upachaya house, Saturn makes the person courageous and wealthy. Of the authorities quoted, Brihat Jatak gives intellect and great strength, Phaldeepika intelligence and generosity with laziness, and Chamatkar Chintamani unhappiness over brothers and many obstacles. So the Bhrigu text gives the person the courage, gives the siblings the cost, and lets dignity reverse the cost.
This app wrote its lines from that chapter. Favourable: "real courage and material gain - Saturn does well as a natural malefic in this upachaya house". Testing: "strained or distant sibling relationships". For the Sun, Saturn and Rahu the app's favourable 3rd-house line names the Upachaya principle in so many words.
BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 14 and the sloka after it
BPHS gives the 3rd house its own chapter, and Sl. 14 is the verse most often quoted alone: the Sun in the 3rd harms elder siblings, Saturn in the 3rd harms younger ones, and Mars there harms both. Sl. 15 follows at once: effects related to brothers and sisters are to be announced only after estimating the strength and weakness of such combinations. The chapter ends on that instruction. Reading "Sun, Mars or Saturn in the 3rd means losing a sibling" as a verdict is a misreading for exactly this reason.
The opening slokas supply what Sl. 15 asks for. Sl. 1: a benefic joining or aspecting the 3rd gives co-born and courage. Sl. 2: the 3rd lord with Mars in or aspecting the 3rd gives good results; Sl. 3: with a malefic, or in a malefic's sign, harm to co-born. Sl. 5-6: the 3rd lord and Mars together in the 8th is the difficult case, and either of them in an angle, a trine, exaltation or friendly divisions gives happiness in sibling matters. A Saturn in the 3rd is a malefic in the house; every other condition is about other planets.
| Source | For the person | For siblings | Condition stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 76 | Courageous, charitable, of great intelligence; base; idle attendants | Not addressed | None |
| Bhrigu Sutras 10-13 | Undesirable trades; courageous and wealthy (commentary) | Loss of or no younger brothers | Own sign or exalted: a good number; with a malefic, enmity |
| BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 14-15 | Not addressed | Harm to younger siblings | Announce only after weighing strength |
| Saravali Ch. 34 | Not addressed | Harm to co-born | A malefic's sign holding a malefic; Mars aspecting Saturn |
| BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 | A favourable Saturn period | Not addressed | A strong Saturn in the 3rd or 11th |
| This app (phSaturn3F / phSaturn3U) | Courage and material gain | Strained or distant relationships | Dignity, tested by the engine |
Why the malefic rule favours Saturn here
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 (printed "86-81") state the general rule for malefics: they harm the houses they occupy, except the 6th, 8th and 12th, with results running from maximum to nil by strength, aspect and dignity. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary states the companion principle for the Upachayas (under Mars in the 3rd and Saturn in the 11th). Where the sources agree: Saturn does unusually well in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, the houses where a malefic is welcome.
BPHS uses the 3rd as the slot for a hard planet in named combinations. Ch. 39 Sl. 17: benefics in the 1st, 2nd and 4th with a malefic in the 3rd make a person a king or equal to one. Ch. 39 Sl. 19: debilitated planets in the 3rd, 6th and 8th while a strong Lagna lord aspects the Lagna give a Raja Yoga. Ch. 43 Sl. 65, a longevity rule, gives long life for malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th with benefics in the angles. A Saturn in the 3rd is the malefic those verses want. A debilitated Saturn, in Aries for Aquarius rising, is also the weak planet Sl. 19 asks for.
Your rising sign: Saturn's sign and the houses it rules
With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 3rd is in the third sign from your Ascendant and rules the two adjacent houses where Capricorn and Aquarius fall. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 3rd.
| Ascendant | Saturn in | Natural dignity | Saturn rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 3rd |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 10th and 11th | Sl. 111: happiness from brothers, valorous, truthful; Sl. 123: skilful, wealthy, happy with siblings |
| Taurus | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 9th and 10th | Sl. 99: happiness from siblings, wealth, charm; Sl. 111: valorous, eloquent |
| Gemini | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 8th and 9th | Sl. 87: without happiness from siblings, lacking helpers; Sl. 99: happiness from siblings |
| Cancer | Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 7th and 8th | Sl. 75: difficulty in the matter of children; Sl. 87: lacking helpers |
| Leo | Libra | Exalted | 6th and 7th | Sl. 63: quick to anger, at odds with co-born; Sl. 75: difficulty about children |
| Virgo | Scorpio | Enemy (Mars) | 5th and 6th | Sl. 51: attached to co-born, miserly; Sl. 63: lacking courage |
| Libra | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 4th and 5th | Sl. 39: valour, generosity, self-earned wealth; Sl. 51: attached to co-born |
| Scorpio | Capricorn | Own sign | 3rd and 4th | Sl. 27: happiness through co-born, cheerfulness; Sl. 39: valour, self-earned wealth |
| Sagittarius | Aquarius | Moolatrikona to 20 deg; own sign after | 2nd and 3rd | Sl. 15: valorous, wise, miserly with a benefic; Sl. 27: happiness through co-born |
| Capricorn | Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 1st and 2nd | Sl. 3: valour "equal to a lion", wealth, honour; Sl. 15: valorous, wise |
| Aquarius | Aries | Debilitated | 12th and 1st | Sl. 135: without happiness from siblings; Sl. 3: lion-like valour |
| Pisces | Taurus | Friendly (Venus) | 11th and 12th | Sl. 123: skilful, happy with siblings; Sl. 135: self-serving |
Read together, the lords of the 1st, 4th, 9th and 10th bring valour and good sibling relations into the 3rd, and the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th take courage, helpers or sibling happiness away. For Saturn that sorts the Lagnas well. Aries, Taurus, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn rising bring two warm slokas or one warm and one neutral. Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Aquarius and Pisces rising bring at least one of the Trika-lord slokas.
Two rows are worth a closer look. Leo rising gives the exalted case, and also two of the least favourable slokas: the 6th lord in the 3rd, quick to anger and at odds with co-born, and the 7th lord there, difficulty about children. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 also call an 8th lord that also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th specifically harmful; for Cancer rising Saturn owns the 7th and 8th. Dignity and lordship point opposite ways in both rows. Scorpio rising is the clean case: Saturn the 3rd lord in its own sign in the 3rd, which Sl. 27 reads as happiness through co-born, and which turns the Bhrigu Sutras' sibling clause round.
For Scorpio and Sagittarius rising, where Saturn owns the 3rd itself, Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 add a principle: a planet owning a more prominent house stalls the effects of its lesser house and gives its own. For Scorpio rising Saturn's other house is the 4th, an angle, so the 3rd lordship is the junior one. For Sagittarius rising its other house is the 2nd. Beyond the birth chart, BPHS Ch. 7 read happiness through co-born from the Drekkana, the third division of each sign, and Ch. 29 name the Arudha of the 3rd the Bhratru Pada; the Bhava Padas calculator and the Drekkana calculator compute both, and neither is driven by Saturn's house alone.
Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 21-24 (pp. 126-127) add a sign-based rule: a malefic's sign holding a malefic in the 3rd harms co-born, and a benefic's sign holding benefics brings happiness from them. A Saturn in the 3rd in Capricorn, Aquarius, Aries, Scorpio or Leo is a malefic in a malefic's sign. The same passage names one pairing directly: Saturn in the 3rd aspected by Mars harms co-born.
Saravali on dignity, and on Saturn by sign
Saravali gives two more lenses that bear on any Saturn in the 3rd. Its Ch. 45 describes Saturn in each state of dignity: exalted, royal assignments and leadership over villages and towns; in Moolatrikona, of good family, wealthy and valorous; in its own sign, honourable and happy; debilitated, adversity and pennilessness; in an enemy's sign, dirty and distressed. Its one surprise is the friend's sign, where Saravali has the native depending on others for food. That last line sits oddly beside this app's rule, which counts a friendly sign as strong.
Its Ch. 29 reads Saturn sign by sign, independent of house. For the 3rd-house cases that decide the engine's verdict outright: Libra (Leo rising), rich, soft-spoken, money and honours from abroad; Capricorn (Scorpio rising), learned in scripture and many arts, honourable, famous, courageous; Aquarius (Sagittarius rising), eminent but "a great liar" and very ill-tempered; Aries (Aquarius rising), worn down by hard labour. And for Libra and Capricorn rising, where Saturn in the 3rd is in Jupiter's Sagittarius or Pisces, two of the chapter's kindest verses: skilled in teaching, known for good children, well off in old age; and first among relatives and friends, with growing wealth. The Capricorn verse's courage is the 3rd house's own word, arriving here through the sign rather than the house.
How this app decides favourable or testing
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Saturn is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign; the 3rd is not a dusthana. For other signs the engine combines Saturn's natural relation to the sign lord (Mercury and Venus friends, Jupiter neutral, the Sun, Moon and Mars enemies) with a temporary relation read from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Saturn is a temporary friend.
- Always favourable: Leo rising (exalted in Libra), Scorpio and Sagittarius rising (own sign or Moolatrikona).
- Never favourable: Aquarius rising, Saturn debilitated in Aries.
- Favourable if Mercury or Venus sits well from Saturn: Aries, Cancer and Pisces rising; otherwise Neutral.
- Friendly or Enemy, decided by Jupiter: Libra and Capricorn rising.
- At best Neutral: Taurus, Gemini and Virgo rising, with Saturn in a sign of the Moon, the Sun or Mars.
In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,387 had Saturn in the 3rd and 48.0 per cent printed the favourable line. The rule does not look at the 3rd lord or Mars, which BPHS Ch. 14 make decisive for siblings, or at Mars's aspect, which Saravali Ch. 34 name. Note also that the Upachaya principle is not in the test: a Neutral Saturn in the 3rd prints the testing line, "strained or distant sibling relationships", although the sources' praise for a malefic here is not conditional on dignity.
Strength moves the other way from the house's reputation. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 put Saturn's directional strength at nil in the 1st and full in the 7th; the 3rd is two houses along, worth 1.33 of 4 in the engine. In the strength run, a Saturn in the 3rd averaged 8.36 of 20 and was Strong in 12.1 per cent. Saturn is combust within 15 degrees of the Sun in this engine, and a retrograde Saturn earns no motional credit. The Shad Bala calculator shows each part.
Saturn's three aspects from the 3rd
Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th places from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). From the 3rd those land on the 5th, the 9th and the 12th, and the engine returns those three. Two are trines: the 5th, of children and intellect, and the 9th, of fortune and the father. In the engine's Shad Bala each counts as a malefic aspect on any planet there. None of the texts cited here states a separate result for Saturn aspecting those houses from the 3rd. For the houses, see the 5th and the 9th.
Two geometric facts apply here. Saturn's 3rd aspect is never returned, so whatever sits in the 5th is aspected by Saturn without aspecting it back. And its 10th aspect is returned only by Mars: a Mars in the 12th would aspect Saturn in the 3rd by its own 4th-place aspect. That is the Mars aspect Saravali Ch. 34 name as harmful to co-born when it falls on Saturn in the 3rd.
Saturn beside other planets in the 3rd
BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 put any planet joined with Saturn in the Kshudhita state. In the 3rd that most often matters for the 3rd lord or for Mars, the two planets Ch. 14 judge sibling matters by. The engine does not compute avasthas.
Company also changes the classical reading the other way. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 count a benefic joining the 3rd as giving co-born and courage, and Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 21 read Saturn with Jupiter in one house as heroic, wealthy and famous, the head of a city or an assembly, the one plainly favourable Saturn pairing. Saturn with Mercury (Sl. 19) reads as debts and pride, but an able poet, expert and well-spoken. The worked chart below has both beside Saturn in the 3rd.
Timing: a placement BPHS treats with two voices
The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 describe the strong case as including a Saturn in the 3rd or 11th house: recognition by government, name and fame, success in education, a high position, property and children. That is one of the few places BPHS names the 3rd as good for a Saturn period specifically. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20, which the Saturn Mahadasha and Sun Mahadasha pages also cover, say the opposite in general terms: the dashas of the 3rd, 6th and 11th lords and of grahas placed in those houses prove unfavourable, with Rahu and Ketu exempted. A Saturn in the 3rd falls under both the Ch. 47 praise and the Ch. 48 caution. The text does not reconcile them, and neither does this page. The engine applies only the dignity-and-dusthana test of Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, so a dignified Saturn in the 3rd reads favourable in the dasha panel.
When Saturn rules your 3rd, for Scorpio and Sagittarius rising, the app adds the 3rd lord's theme from BPHS Ch. 48, "effort-heavy, generally more testing period for courage and sibling matters". For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and marks Saturn in the 3rd from the Moon favourable, described as steady, disciplined progress. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 310-311) agrees that Saturn gives good results in the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon, and says that after Sade Sati the native turns "a new leaf for the next 22 yrs". That is a transit counted from the Moon, not a natal Saturn in the 3rd house.

For Scorpio rising Saturn rules the 3rd and 4th, so this is the 3rd lord in its own sign in the 3rd. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 27 read that as happiness through co-born and cheerfulness, Sl. 39 add valour and self-earned wealth for the 4th lord, and the Bhrigu Sutras' own-sign clause turns their sibling warning round. Two benefics, Jupiter and Mercury, share the house, which BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 count as giving co-born and courage, and Saravali Ch. 15 read Saturn with Jupiter as the one plainly favourable Saturn pairing. Mars, the significator, is in the 7th, an angle, which Ch. 14 Sl. 6 count for happiness in sibling matters.
Other rules pull the other way. Jupiter is debilitated, and both Jupiter and Mercury, joined with Saturn, are Kshudhita by BPHS Ch. 45. Capricorn is a malefic's sign holding a malefic, the Saravali Ch. 34 case for harm to co-born. Ch. 39 Sl. 17 is not met: the 1st holds Ketu and the 2nd nothing, where the yoga wants benefics. One practical caution about the chart itself: the Ascendant is at 0.00 degrees of Scorpio. A birth a minute or so earlier would have had Libra rising, putting Saturn in the 4th. The Moon in Hasta starts life in the Moon's Mahadasha, and the Saturn period does not begin until 2064.
Checking a Saturn in the 3rd in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Saturn is in the 3rd if it is in the third sign from your Ascendant. Check how close your Ascendant is to a sign boundary.
- Find Saturn's dignity and, for a non-dignified sign, where the sign lord sits from Saturn.
- Find your 3rd lord and Mars. Are they in an angle, a trine or exaltation (Ch. 14 Sl. 6), or together in the 8th (Sl. 5)?
- Is a benefic in or aspecting the 3rd (Ch. 14 Sl. 1)? Does Mars aspect Saturn from the 12th (Saravali Ch. 34)?
- Read the two Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Saturn rules in the table above.
- Weigh strength before believing any single verse, as Ch. 14 Sl. 15 and Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 require; the Drekkana (D3) calculator shows the division BPHS reads for co-born.
- Note when the Saturn periods run, and keep transits, counted from the Moon, separate.
The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.
Common misreadings
- "Saturn in the 3rd means losing a younger sibling." BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 14 says so in one line and Sl. 15 requires strength to be weighed first; the Bhrigu Sutras reverse it in own sign or exaltation. This app computes nothing about siblings.
- "A malefic in the 3rd is bad for me." For the person the sources say nearly the opposite: courage, charity, intelligence, wealth.
- "The app says testing, so the Upachaya rule does not apply." The app's line rests on dignity alone; the sources' praise for a malefic here is not conditioned on dignity.
- "BPHS says a Saturn period from the 3rd is bad." Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 do; Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 list a strong Saturn in the 3rd among the favourable cases. Both are in the book.
- "Saturn in the 3rd from my Moon is the same thing." That is a transit, counted from the Moon, and the app reads it favourable for a different reason.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Saturn in the 3rd house good?
- For the person, the sources lean favourable: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 76 gives courage, charity and great intelligence, and the Bhrigu Sutras commentary courage and wealth. For younger siblings BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 14 and the Bhrigu Sutras are cautious, with strength and dignity changing the result.
- Why do malefics do well in the 3rd?
- The 3rd is an Upachaya, a growing house. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary says malefics there "are said to give benefic results", and BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 17 and Ch. 43 Sl. 65 use the 3rd as the slot for a malefic in favourable combinations.
- What does Saturn aspect from the 3rd house?
- The 5th, 9th and 12th houses, by its 3rd, 7th and 10th aspects.
- Which rising signs give the strongest Saturn in the 3rd?
- By dignity, Leo (exalted), Scorpio and Sagittarius (own sign or Moolatrikona). By lordship, Scorpio, where Saturn rules the 3rd and 4th, and Libra and Capricorn, where it brings the 4th and 5th or 1st and 2nd lordships.
- Is the Saturn dasha good for a Saturn in the 3rd?
- BPHS speaks with two voices: Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 count a strong Saturn in the 3rd among the favourable cases, and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 call the dashas of grahas in the 3rd unfavourable. The app grades it by Saturn's dignity only.
- Does Saturn transiting the 3rd from my Moon mean the same?
- No. The Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and marks that transit favourable. A natal Saturn in the 3rd is counted from the Ascendant.
- Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
- See Saturn in the 2nd house and Saturn in the 4th house; the other growing house Saturn is read well in is the 11th.
