What the classical texts say about Venus in the 1st house; how each rising sign changes Venus's dignity and the houses it rules; when Malavya Yoga forms; and how this app decides whether your Venus in the Lagna reads as favourable.

Venus in the 1st house puts the planet the texts rank as the strongest natural benefic into the one house that is about the person rather than a topic. Most of what the classical sources say about the placement follows from that pairing. BPHS says a benefic in the Lagna gives a pleasing appearance, Saravali gives fine eyes and a happy temperament, and the Bhrigu Sutras give learning and wealth. The same sources then attach conditions, and the conditions are where most of the work lies.

This page sets out those statements with chapter and sloka, the conditions each text attaches, and how this app's engine turns the placement into the line you see in your own chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast. For the planet itself, start with Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 1st house, Tanu Bhava. This page does not repeat those in full. It works out what happens when the two meet.

A note on sources

Every classical statement on this page was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Appearance and health phrases are the texts' own wording, not a description of any person and not medical advice.

The house Venus is entering

BPHS Ch. 11 Sloka 2 lists what the 1st house shows: physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, weakness, happiness, grief and innate nature. The list holds opposites on purpose. The house does not promise vigour or weakness; it is where you look to find out which. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 calls the house the self and names the Sun as its fixed significator. The Bhrigu Sutras add a longer, later list in which honour, dignity, general well-being and the start in life all appear.

Two structural facts matter for any planet placed here. BPHS Ch. 7 makes the 1st a Kendra, an angle, alongside the 4th, 7th and 10th, and it is also counted with the trines. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 draws the consequence for the lord of the house: the Lagna lord is specially auspicious because the Lagna is both a Kendra and a Kona. That sentence is about ownership. A Venus in your 1st is always an occupant of the house, and it is also the owner only when Taurus or Libra is rising.

What Venus brings into the Lagna

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9 list Venus among the natural benefics, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 ranks the benefics in ascending order as the full Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus. Venus is therefore the strongest of the four. The same sloka turns the ranking round for one purpose: when a benefic owns an angle it loses some of its helpfulness, and the loss grows in that same order. So the strongest benefic is also the one whose house lordship matters most, and the rising-sign table further down cannot be skipped.

Venus also carries a specific office. BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 makes it the significator of the 7th house, the house of marriage and partnership, and Sl. 22-24 reads the spouse from the 7th house counted from Venus itself. From the 1st, that count lands on the 7th house of the chart. A Venus in the Lagna is the one placement where the significator of marriage sits exactly opposite the house it signifies and looks straight at it. The 7th house page covers what that house holds.

What the texts say about Venus in the 1st

BPHS Ch. 12: a benefic in the Lagna

BPHS gives the 1st house its own chapter, and three of its slokas name Venus or the benefics directly. Sloka 4 says a benefic in the Lagna gives a pleasing appearance and a malefic takes it away, and that the body is comfortable when the Lagna is joined or aspected by a benefic. Slokas 5-7 say that if the Lagna lord, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus is in an angle or a trine, the person is long-lived, wealthy, intelligent and liked by the king; and if Mercury, Jupiter or Venus is in the Lagna with the Moon, "or be in angle from Lagn", the person is "endowed with royal marks (of fortune)". Read in present-day terms these verses describe support and standing, not kingship.

Notice that both conditions are satisfied by the placement alone. The Lagna is an angle, so a Venus there meets them whatever its sign; the Moon in the same house is one route to the royal marks, not the only one. Sloka 4 is about the occupant's nature, not its dignity. None of these three verses asks whether Venus is exalted or debilitated. The dignity test comes from elsewhere in the same chapter, and from the other two books.

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 62

Saravali gives one verse to each planet in each house. For Venus in the Ascendant, Ch. 30 Sl. 62 (p. 104) reads: "beautiful eyes, face and physique, be happy, long-lived, timid and attractive to females". Timid is the odd one out among the 1st-house verses: the Sun (Sl. 2), Mars (Sl. 26) and Jupiter (Sl. 50) in the same chapter are given courage. Venus is given ease and looks instead, and the text pairs them with a lack of boldness. It is a temperament verse, compressed and blunt, and it does not say what changes it.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 1-13

Sutras 1-13 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 87, corpus line 3445): proficient in mathematics, long-lived, loved by his wife, fond of ornaments, good dresses and beauty, liked by women, wealthy and learned. With a benefic, a lustrous body and many ornaments. With a malefic's company or aspect, or in Virgo, its debilitation, "a thief and a cheat" with rheumatic and phlegmatic diseases. With a benefic in the 4th, conveyances and high prosperity. In its own sign, Maharaja yoga. As lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th, or weak, two wives, a fluctuating fortune and a hard heart. The text also names hydrocele when the Lagna lord is with Rahu. Virgo is the one sign the sutras name as turning the reading round; Saravali and BPHS name no sign for this house.

The commentator (pp. 87-88) narrows the lordship sutra: for Taurus and Libra rising, where Venus in the Lagna rules the 6th or 8th, its own-sign Maharaja yoga should prevail, so the evil reading is left to a 12th-lord Venus. He names Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising as the cases where Venus is a yoga karaka (2nd and 9th, 5th and 10th, 4th and 9th lord) and "immensely beneficial" in the Lagna. Of the other authorities quoted (p. 88), Brihat Jatak gives skill in amorous sports and happiness, Phaldeepika an attractive body, charming eyes, happiness and long life, and Chamatkar Chintamani an attractive body, noble company and pious deeds; the Note says all agree Venus is good here.

This app wrote its own pair of lines from that chapter. The favourable line reads "real charm, wealth and learning - capable of forming Malavya Yoga in its own sign or exaltation, a classically strong placement". The testing line reads "real strain in integrity and health under affliction". The app's provenance comment records that the Venus chapter was read in full and that its sexual-content lines were dropped on the way in.

Your rising sign decides Venus's sign and lordship

This app counts houses by whole signs from the Ascendant, so a Venus in the 1st is always in your rising sign. That fixes two further things by arithmetic. Venus's dignity depends on the sign, and the two houses Venus rules depend on where Taurus and Libra fall from it. If you do not know your rising sign, the Lagna calculator finds it from your birth time and place; without a birth time no house placement can be read at all.

BPHS Ch. 24 gives one sloka for the lord of each house placed in the Lagna, and Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 says whether Venus is auspicious or not for each rising sign. Since Venus always rules two houses, two Ch. 24 slokas apply to every row. The table puts all of it side by side.

Left out of the Ch. 24 cells: Sl. 1 two wives and other females; Sl. 13 lustful, hard-hearted, others' jobs; Sl. 25 devoid of learning; Sl. 49 crooked, steals others' wealth; Sl. 61 inimical to his own men; Sl. 73 others' wives, wicked, windy diseases; Sl. 85 hostile to gods and Brahmins; Sl. 133 weak, phlegmatic, without learning.

Read across the rows and the three measures rarely agree. Pisces rising gives Venus its exaltation, the strongest dignity in the table, yet BPHS Ch. 34 lists Venus as a malefic for that Lagna because it rules the 3rd and 8th, and the 8th-lord sloka speaks of a lack of physical felicity. Virgo rising gives Venus its debilitation, the case the Bhrigu Sutras say reverses the reading, yet Ch. 34 calls Venus auspicious there as lord of the 2nd and 9th, and the 9th-lord sloka is one of the warmest in the chapter. Capricorn and Aquarius rising give Venus only a friend's sign, and Ch. 34 makes it the single most useful planet for both.

BPHS supplies the instrument for holding these together. Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 scales good effects by dignity: full in exaltation, three quarters in Moolatrikona, half in own sign, a quarter in a friend's sign, an eighth in a neutral's, none in debilitation or an enemy's sign. Dignity sets how much of the result arrives. Lordship sets what the result is about. Occupancy of the Lagna sets where it shows. The texts keep the three apart, and this page does too.

Taurus and Libra rising: Venus as occupant and owner

Only for these two Lagnas is Venus the Lagna lord sitting in the Lagna. Ch. 24 Sl. 1 reads that as physical happiness, prowess and intelligence, with a fickle mind. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 calls the Lagna lord specially auspicious. Yet the same chapter lists the Taurus Lagna lord with the malefics, because Venus also rules the 6th, and calls it neutral for Libra, where it also rules the 8th. The text leaves the Taurus case unreconciled, and so does this page; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (p. 87) holds that own sign prevails there.

Malavya Yoga: a quarter of all Venus-in-the-1st charts

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 give the rule for Malavya, one of the five Panchamahapurusha Yogas: Venus in its own or exaltation sign, in an angle from the Lagna. The 1st is an angle, so a Venus in the Lagna forms Malavya whenever Taurus, Libra or Pisces is rising, and never otherwise. The engine tests exactly that rule and the Yogas calculator reports it.

Because the condition is just three rising signs, Malavya is common for this placement. In a run of this app's engine over 121,469 charts cast for New Delhi every 7 hours 13 minutes from 1950 to 2049, Venus fell in the 1st house in 10,101 of them, and Malavya formed in 26.7 per cent of those. Across all charts this site's sweep gives a figure near one in eleven. A yoga present in a quarter of all charts with a given placement is not a rare mark of distinction, and the texts' description of it should be read as describing a strong Venus, nothing more exotic.

  • A wealth combination naming this house. BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 14 makes Venus in the Lagna in its own sign, joined or aspected by Saturn and Mercury, a wealth combination. That is the Taurus or Libra case with two particular planets involved, and the engine detects it.
  • Chamar Yog. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 11-12 form this when two benefics are in the Lagna, the 7th, 9th or 10th (or the Lagna lord is exalted in an angle with Jupiter's aspect). A Venus in the 1st supplies one of the two.
  • Royal marks of fortune. The Ch. 12 Sl. 5-7 condition above is a description in the text, not a named yoga the engine detects. What a detected yoga does and does not mean is covered in what a yoga in your chart means.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints one line for each planet's house. For Venus in the 1st the engine prints the favourable sentence when two things hold: Venus is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign, and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 1st is never a dusthana, so for this placement the whole verdict rests on dignity, and dignity rests on your rising sign and on where one other planet sits.

For any sign Venus neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine works out the fivefold relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 between Venus and the sign's lord. The natural half is fixed: Mercury and Saturn are Venus's friends, the Sun and Moon its enemies, Mars and Jupiter neutral. The temporary half is read from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend, anywhere else a temporary enemy. Only Friend or Great Friend becomes "Friendly sign". For Venus in the Lagna, that gives five groups.

  • Always favourable: Taurus and Libra rising (own sign; the first 15 degrees of Libra are Moolatrikona, BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54) and Pisces rising (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Virgo rising, Venus's debilitation. This is also the one sign the Bhrigu Sutras name as reversing the reading.
  • Favourable only if the sign lord is well placed from Venus: Gemini, Capricorn and Aquarius rising. Mercury or Saturn must sit in a temporary-friend position from your Lagna; anywhere else, including the Lagna itself, the friend becomes Neutral and the testing line prints.
  • Favourable or weak, nothing between: Aries, Scorpio and Sagittarius rising. Mars or Jupiter is a natural neutral, so the temporary half decides alone. Well placed, it makes the sign Friendly; badly placed, Enemy sign.
  • Never better than Neutral: Cancer and Leo rising. The Moon and the Sun are natural enemies. A temporary-friend position lifts them only to Neutral. For Leo, the Sun is always within two signs of Venus, so the sign reads Neutral unless the Sun is rising too, when it reads Enemy.

Across the 10,101 sample charts, those rules gave the favourable house line 53.7 per cent of the time. The split was Friendly sign 27.0 per cent, Neutral 20.9, Own sign 18.8, Enemy sign 17.2, Debilitated 8.2, Exalted 6.9 and Moolatrikona 1.0. The test is narrower than the texts. It does not look at the Moon's company, at aspects on the Lagna, or at what Venus rules. A "testing" line here means Venus lacks dignity, not that a classical condition for harm is met.

The Lagna clause: why your dasha line can disagree

A second verdict appears in the dasha panel, and for this house it follows a different rule. buildDashaLordEffects() calls a Venus period favourable when Venus has strong dignity or sits in the Lagna, provided it is not debilitated, not in an enemy sign and not in a dusthana. That Lagna clause comes from BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, which names the Lagna first among the good positions for a dasha lord. So a Venus in the 1st in a Neutral sign prints a testing house line and a favourable dasha verdict at the same time. In the sample that lifted the favourable dasha share to 74.6 per cent. The Venus Mahadasha page explains the dasha test in full.

A third label, dashaQuality(), grades the same Venus good, neutral or challenging. It reads good only for exaltation, Moolatrikona or own sign, challenging for debilitation, an enemy sign or a dusthana, and neutral otherwise. It has no Lagna clause. A Venus in a friendly sign in the Lagna is therefore favourable in the house line, favourable in the dasha line and neutral in quality, three answers that are each correct for the rule that produced them.

The aspect: Venus looks at the 7th house

BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 gives every graha a full aspect on the 7th place from itself and reserves special aspects for Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. Venus has one aspect, and from the 1st it falls on the 7th house. The engine's aspectedHouses() returns exactly that. In the Shad Bala calculation, Venus's aspect counts as a benefic aspect for any planet in your 7th.

The aspect lands on the house Venus signifies. BPHS reads the spouse both from the 7th house and from the 7th counted from Venus, and with Venus in the Lagna those are the same house. None of the source paraphrases on this site states a separate result for Venus aspecting the 7th from the 1st, so this page does not supply one. What it can say is that a reader looking at marriage in such a chart has one sign to examine, not two. The Venus in the 7th house page treats the reverse case, Venus in the 7th looking back at the Lagna.

Read the other way, the Lagna is aspected by whatever sits in the 7th, and by Mars from the 10th or 6th, Jupiter from the 9th or 5th, and Saturn from the 11th or 4th. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3 says health suffers when the Lagna is touched by a malefic with no benefic aspect alongside. A Venus already in the Lagna is a benefic in the house itself, which is the counterweight that sloka has in mind.

Strength: direction, combustion and the Kendra flag

Three engine measures bear on a Venus in the 1st. Directional strength first: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures Venus from the 10th house, so it has none there and full strength in the 4th. The 1st sits between, and in the worked chart below the Shad Bala calculator gave it 2 of a possible 4 directional points. Saravali gives directional strength in the Ascendant to Jupiter and Mercury, not to Venus.

Combustion second. The engine marks Venus combust within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde, and a combust planet's position score drops to zero. Venus was combust in 15.1 per cent of the Venus-in-the-1st sample, close to its rate in every other house. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 says a combust planet loses its rays with Venus and Saturn excepted; the engine does not apply the exception, so here it reads harder than Saravali.

Third, the Kendradhipathya flag. The engine raises a Mild dosha whenever a benefic owns an angle without owning the 1st. For Venus in the Lagna that flag appears with Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, the six Lagnas where Venus rules the 4th, 7th or 10th. For Capricorn and Aquarius BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 settles the matter in Venus's favour, because it rules a trine as well. Read the flag there as a note about the rule, not a second verdict.

Timing: the Venus periods and Venus passing the 1st from the Moon

The Venus Mahadasha lasts twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15), the longest in the Vimshottari cycle, and Venus also runs an Antardasha inside every other Mahadasha. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 describe the period of a Venus in exaltation, its own sign, an angle or a trine in terms of clothes, ornaments, conveyances, land, recognition and celebrations. A Venus in the 1st meets the angle condition by position. Sl. 83-84 reserve the difficult reading for the 6th, 8th and 12th, which this placement never is. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates of your Venus periods.

Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 add a coarse timing rule for every lord: a graha in the first ten degrees of its sign shows its effects early in its dasha, in the middle ten degrees in the middle, and in the last ten at the end, with the order reversed for a retrograde planet. Ch. 48 Sl. 2-8 then give each house lord's period a theme, and this app words those themes for the two houses Venus rules from your Lagna. For Capricorn rising, for example, the dasha panel lists "progress in education and happiness through children" for the 5th and "career recognition and advancement" for the 10th. For Scorpio rising it lists strain in partnership for the 7th and expenses for the 12th.

Transits use a different frame. The Gochar calculator counts Venus's current sign from your natal Moon, not your Lagna, and applies the benefic rule: the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th from the Moon are favourable, the 3rd and 6th indifferent, and the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th testing. Venus passing over your Moon sign is therefore read as testing, even though a natal Venus in the 1st is read the other way. The two frames answer different questions and can point in opposite directions in the same chart.

Why Friendly sign: Scorpio belongs to Mars, a natural neutral to Venus. Mars in Libra is the 12th sign from Venus's Scorpio, a temporary-friend position, so the fivefold result is Friend and the favourable line prints. Had Mars been in Scorpio, or anywhere from the 5th to the 9th sign from it, the temporary half would have been enmity, the result Enemy sign, and the same Venus in the same house would have printed the testing line and failed the dasha test as well.

What the engine does not weigh, the texts would. With Scorpio rising, Venus rules Taurus, the 7th, and Libra, the 12th, so Ch. 24 Sl. 73 and Sl. 133 apply, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 35-36 lists Venus among the malefics for this Lagna. The Sun and Saturn, both natural malefics, share the Lagna, which Ch. 12 Sl. 3-4 counts against appearance and health, while Jupiter's aspect from the 5th, which the engine records, is the benefic aspect that sloka asks for. The Moon is not with Venus, but Venus is in an angle, so the Sl. 5-7 royal-marks condition is met by position. The Bhrigu condition is mixed: Venus is not in Virgo, but it does sit with two malefics.

The Moon in Swati starts life in Rahu's Mahadasha, and by the engine's timeline the Venus Mahadasha does not begin until 8 October 2049, around age 62. A placement can be strong and still have its own period arrive late. That is the arithmetic of the Moon's nakshatra, not a statement about the placement.

Checking a Venus in the 1st in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator using an accurate time and place. Venus is in the 1st if it is in your rising sign. Near a sign boundary, a few minutes of birth time can move the Ascendant and the house with it.
  2. Find Venus's dignity. Exalted in Pisces, own sign in Taurus and Libra, debilitated in Virgo. In any other sign, note where that sign's lord sits from your Lagna, using the five groups above.
  3. Find the two houses Venus rules, where Taurus and Libra fall, and read both Ch. 24 slokas and the Ch. 34 row in the rising-sign table.
  4. Is the Moon also in the 1st (Ch. 12 Sl. 7)? Are malefics there with Venus, and is there a benefic aspect on the Lagna (Ch. 12 Sl. 3)?
  5. Check whether Malavya forms (Taurus, Libra or Pisces rising) and whether the Kendradhipathya flag appears.
  6. Weigh strength before trusting any single verse. The Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators give two measures, and the Navamsa (D9) shows Venus's sign in the chart read for marriage.
  7. Look up when the Venus Mahadasha and Antardashas run, and keep transit readings, counted from the Moon, separate from this natal one.

The methodology page explains how positions are computed and where their limits are, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.

Common misreadings

  • "Venus in the 1st means a beautiful person." BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 4 and Saravali Sl. 62 do speak of appearance, but in compressed verses about a single factor. No text claims one planet fixes how someone looks, and the same chapter makes the Lagna lord and aspects part of the reading.
  • "An exalted Venus in the Lagna is the best case." By dignity, yes. By lordship, BPHS Ch. 34 lists Venus as a malefic for Pisces rising, where it rules the 3rd and 8th.
  • "A debilitated Venus in the 1st cancels everything." The Bhrigu Sutras name Virgo as reversing the reading, yet BPHS Ch. 34 calls Venus auspicious for Virgo rising as lord of the 2nd and 9th. The sources disagree, and the page reports both.
  • "Malavya Yoga makes this placement rare." It formed in about a quarter of the sample charts with Venus in the 1st.
  • "The app says testing, so the dasha will be bad." The house line and the dasha verdict use different rules. A Neutral Venus in the Lagna prints a testing house line and a favourable dasha verdict.
  • "Venus in the 1st guarantees a good marriage." No source paraphrased here says so. Venus aspects the 7th from here, but the 7th house, its lord and the Navamsa all have to be read.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venus in the 1st house good or bad?
The sources lean favourable. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 4-7 give a benefic in the Lagna a pleasing appearance and an angular Venus wealth and standing; Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 62 gives fine looks, happiness and long life; the Bhrigu Sutras give learning and wealth. The Bhrigu text reverses the reading for an afflicted Venus or one in Virgo, and lordship from your Lagna changes what the placement is about.
Does Venus in the 1st form Malavya Yoga?
Only when Taurus, Libra or Pisces is rising, because the yoga needs Venus in its own or exaltation sign in an angle (BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2). In this engine's sample it formed in 26.7 per cent of charts with Venus in the 1st.
Why does Saravali call Venus in the 1st timid?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 62 puts the word just before "attractive to females" and gives no reason for it. The same chapter gives courage to the Sun, Mars and Jupiter in the Ascendant. The verse is a temperament sketch, not a verdict.
Why does the app show a testing line for my Venus in the 1st?
Because Venus is not exalted, Moolatrikona, in its own sign or in a friendly sign in your chart. In Gemini, Capricorn or Aquarius that depends on where Mercury or Saturn sits; in Aries, Scorpio or Sagittarius on where Mars or Jupiter sits; in Cancer and Leo it can never be friendly; in Virgo it is debilitated.
What does Venus aspect from the 1st house?
Only the 7th house, by its full 7th-sign aspect. That is the house Venus signifies, so the significator of marriage looks directly at the house of marriage. The source paraphrases on this site state no separate result for that aspect.
For which rising signs is a Venus in the 1st most useful?
By lordship, BPHS Ch. 34 calls Venus auspicious for Gemini, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius, and singles it out for the last two. By dignity, Pisces, Taurus and Libra are strongest. The two measures do not coincide; see the rising-sign table, and the Venus in the 2nd house page for the next house along.
When will a Venus in the 1st show its effects?
Classically in the Venus Mahadasha, twenty years, and in Venus Antardashas. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 describe a favourable Venus period for a Venus in an angle, and Sl. 3-4 tie the timing within the period to Venus's degree. This app shows when those periods run; it does not predict events in them.
Is Venus in the 1st the same as Venus transiting my 1st house?
No. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant and lasts a lifetime. The transit is counted from the natal Moon in this app and lasts a few weeks, and Venus over the Moon sign is read as testing in the Gochar calculator.
