Mesha is where the Sun is exalted, Saturn falls and Mars is at home. This guide sets out what BPHS and Saravali say about the sign with chapter and sloka, what sits inside its 30 degrees, how Aries works as a rising sign, and when its dashas and transits run.

Aries, Mesha in Sanskrit, is the first of the twelve rashis: the first 30 degrees of the sidereal zodiac, and the point from which BPHS counts both the signs and the nakshatras. The classical texts give the sign itself a short, fixed description - movable, fiery, male, ruled by Mars, the head of Time personified - and spend far more words on what each graha does there. The Sun is exalted in it, Saturn falls in it, and Mars has both its Moolatrikona and its own house in it, so three of the seven grahas change dignity inside this one sign.

This page sets out what BPHS and Saravali say about the sign, with chapter and sloka; what lies inside it degree by degree; how this app's engine treats each graha placed in it; how Aries behaves as a rising sign; and when its periods and transits run. It is a reference for rules, not a portrait of "Aries people". To find out whether your Moon is in Aries, use the Moon Sign calculator.

Three different things are called "Aries"

BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 4-6 lays out the frame: 27 nakshatras beginning from Ashvini, the same circle divided into 12 rashis beginning from Mesh, and the rashi rising in the east as the Lagna. So a chart can "be Aries" in three independent ways. In Indian usage "my rashi is Mesha" means the first: the Moon was in Aries at birth. Moon sign and nakshatra explains why that one carries the name.

Moon: 134 passes through sidereal Aries, 2020-2029. Sun: ingress dates for 2025-2028. Lagna: a one-minute sweep of the ascendant.

The dates are sidereal. This app uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, 24.23 degrees on 5 October 2026 (see the Methodology page). In 2026 the engine puts the Sun in sidereal Aries from 14 April, 09:12 IST (Mesha Sankranti) to 15 May, 06:02 IST; the tropical Aries of Western Sun-sign columns ran, by the same Sun, from 20 March to 20 April. The two overlap for about six days, so someone born on 25 March with a Western Aries Sun has a sidereal Sun in Pisces, and the Sun Sign calculator will say so.

The Lagna runs on the fastest clock. Saravali Ch. 3 Sloka 37-38 lists Aries among the signs of short ascension, with Pisces, Taurus and Aquarius, and Daivajna Vallabha Ch. 10 Sloka 6 repeats the list. The engine agrees about Aries: swept minute by minute at New Delhi, it took 95 minutes to rise against 141 for Cancer, and only Pisces (85) and Aquarius (88) were quicker; at Chennai it took 108 minutes, at Srinagar 90. Ninety-five minutes of a 1,436-minute sidereal day is 6.6 per cent, so Aries rising is rarer than a one-in-twelve share. On 15 April 2026 the window at New Delhi opened at 05:58 IST, two minutes after sunrise. It moves about two hours earlier each month: it opened at 11:52 in mid-January, about midnight in mid-July and 17:54, sunset, in mid-October. A birth time far outside the window for its month means the time or the place needs checking with the Lagna calculator.

How the texts describe Mesha

BPHS Ch. 4 calls the twelve rashis the limbs of Time personified, "commencing from Mesh" (Sloka 1-2); Sloka 4 assigns the limbs, Sloka 5 the classifications, and Sloka 6-7 describe the sign. Saravali Ch. 3, "Rasi Description", covers the same ground, and the two agree on every attribute they share.

Classical classifications of a sign. The humour and limb entries are what the texts say, not medical advice.

Two of these come with a rule for use. Saravali Ch. 3 Sloka 5-6 says a benefic in a sign makes the corresponding limb strong and a malefic makes it weak; Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 214) tabulates Aries the same way, as cardinal, fire, male, head and face. And Sloka 25 says a rashi is strong when aspected by its own lord, by a planet friendly to its lord, or by Mercury or Jupiter.

Of all this the engine keeps four things: the two names (Aries, Mesha), the lord (Mars), the element (Fire) and the mobility (movable). The element feeds the "dominant element" line among your Kundali quick insights, which counts all nine grahas by the element of their signs. The mobility decides where the Navamsa count starts, which signs Aries aspects, and which house is flagged as the badhaka for an Aries Lagna. Colour, direction, guna and the day or night strength of signs are not used.

Inside the sign: three nakshatras, nine padas

Thirty degrees hold two and a quarter nakshatras: all of Ashwini, all of Bharani and the first pada of Krittika. Each pada is 3 degrees 20 minutes wide, which is also the width of a Navamsa, and BPHS Ch. 6 Sloka 12 starts the Navamsa count of a movable sign "from there itself". So the Moon's degree in Aries fixes three things at once: its nakshatra and pada, its Navamsa sign, and the lord of the first Vimshottari Mahadasha.

Saravali Ch. 3 Sloka 13 names the first Navamsa of a movable sign Vargottama and says a Lagna there makes the native "an important person in his circle". The engine marks any graha or Lagna in the first 3 degrees 20 minutes of Aries as Vargottama, its sign being the same in the birth chart and the Navamsa. The Navamsa (D9) calculator shows the flag; Navamsa, the second chart explains what it is for.

The other divisions of Aries

  • Hora (BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 5-6): Aries is an odd sign, so its first 15 degrees are the Sun's Hora and the last 15 the Moon's. See the Hora (D2) calculator.
  • Drekkana (Ch. 6 Sl. 7-8; Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 14): 0 to 10 degrees falls in Aries, 10 to 20 in Leo, 20 to 30 in Sagittarius, with Mars, the Sun and Jupiter as lords. See the Drekkana (D3) calculator.
  • Trimshamsa (Ch. 6 Sl. 27-28): 0 to 5 degrees Mars, 5 to 10 Saturn, 10 to 18 Jupiter, 18 to 25 Mercury, 25 to 30 Venus. See the Trimshamsa (D30) calculator.
  • Every other division of Aries in this engine opens on Aries itself, except the Chaturvimshamsa (D24), which BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 22-23 starts from Leo for an odd sign.

The Drekkana also carries a timing rule: BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 3-4 says a graha in the first Drekkana of its sign shows its Dasha results at the start of the period, one in the second in the middle and one in the third at the end, reversed for a retrograde graha. Saravali Ch. 50 Sloka 1-3 adds character lines for a birth with each Aries decanate rising: the first charitable, splendid and fierce in a quarrel; the second fond of music and pleasure, intelligent, with friends and wealth; the third virtuous and honourable, serving a king, but fickle and "not learned". Those lines belong to the part of Saravali that Ch. 48 introduces as a way to recover an unknown birth time, and their harsher verdicts are not repeated here.

The two edges of the sign

The start of Aries is one of only three sign boundaries that is also a nakshatra boundary, so everything changes together there. On 25 October 2026 the engine has the Moon entering Aries at 19:23 IST: at 00:00 it is in Pisces in Revati, with Mercury as first Mahadasha lord, and at 23:59 in Aries in Ashwini pada 1, with Ketu. Given that date and no time, the Moon Sign calculator reports both ends rather than guessing. The end of Aries falls inside Krittika: when the Moon leaves Aries at 21:08 IST on 27 October 2026, the nakshatra and the opening Mahadasha lord, the Sun, stay the same, while the sign lord changes from Mars to Venus. What a missing birth time does covers both cases.

Dignity: three grahas change status here

BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 49-50 exalts the Sun in Mesh, deepest at 10 degrees, and puts each graha's fall in the seventh sign from its exaltation at the same degree; Saturn is exalted at 20 degrees of Libra, so it is debilitated in Aries, deepest at 20. Sloka 51-54 gives Mars the first 12 degrees of Mesh as Moolatrikona, "with the rest therein becoming simply his own Bhava". Saravali (Ch. 3 Sloka 34-36, Ch. 5 Sloka 21-24) and Bhrigu Sutras (pp. 8, 12) say the same.

dignityOf() run for every graha at 5, 15 and 25 degrees of Aries. The last column is the Sthana part of the 20-point Shad Bala.

BPHS grades these more finely than the engine does. Ch. 3 Sloka 59-60 gives a graha its full good effects in exaltation, three quarters in Moolatrikona, half in its own house, a quarter in a friendly sign, an eighth in a neutral one and none in debilitation or an enemy's sign. By that sloka a Sun anywhere in Aries outranks a Mars at 5 degrees, which outranks a Mars at 20; the engine's ladder treats Moolatrikona as equal to exaltation. The Shad Bala calculator shows the positional score with the other five components, and the Vimshopaka Bala calculator repeats the dignity test across sixteen divisions.

The Neutral labels hide a condition. BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 56-58 adds a temporary friendship read from the chart - grahas in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from each other are friends - and combines it with the natural one. The engine's dignity function can apply this: with Mars placed in each sign in turn, a Moon, Mercury or Venus in Aries came out in a friendly sign when Mars was in Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces, and in an enemy sign otherwise. The rows you see in the app do not pass the chart in, so they print the natural relation alone, as in the table.

For the two extreme placements the degree matters as well. The engine's planetary-rays figure follows Saravali Ch. 36 Sloka 3-6: seven rays at the exact degree of exaltation, none at the exact degree of fall, and a proportion in between. A Sun at 10 degrees of Aries scores 7; a Saturn at 20 degrees scores 0.

Each graha in Aries, as Saravali reads it

Saravali Ch. 22 to 29 give one passage for each graha in each sign, then six lines for how another graha's aspect changes it; for Aries those aspect lines are shared with Scorpio, as "a sign of Mars". The table paraphrases them. The texts were written about kings, ministers and armies, so read the entries as a vocabulary of themes. Their sexual and criminal verdicts and most of the disease lines are left out.

Sun (Ch. 22 Sl. 2-9)Explains the shastras, famous in the arts, fond of war and roaming, strong-boned, valorous, attached to dutyJupiter: plenty of money, a minister or judge. Moon: generous, many servantsMercury: service, little wealth. Venus: enemies, poverty. Saturn: grief through ailments
Moon (Ch. 23 Sl. 1-7)Lasting wealth, valour, self-respect, honour counted as wealth; fickle; wary of rivers and wellsJupiter: riches, a king or minister. Mercury: a teacher, good speech, fame. Venus: lucky, sons and wealthSaturn: jealous, very poor. Mars: wounds, trouble with eyes and teeth
Mars (Ch. 25 Sl. 1-2, 25-30)Splendour, truthfulness, valour; an army chief or village head; charitable; cattle and grain; fierceJupiter: learned, sweet-spoken, very affluent. Sun: wealth, family, a minister or judgeMoon: friendless, at odds with his own people. Mercury: dishonest, hostile
Mercury (Ch. 26 Sl. 1-2, 25-30)Very learned, a writer, fond of music, dance and dispute; loses hard-earned money, runs into debtSun: truthful, happy, honoured by the king. Venus: royal service, skilful speech, trustedSaturn: miseries, cruelty. Moon: serves others
Jupiter (Ch. 27 Sl. 1-2, 25-30)Argumentative; gems earned by his own effort; strength, sons, wealth, an eminent profession; many enemies and expensesSun: charitable, truthful, fortunate. Moon: a writer of history and poetry, learnedMercury: crafty, serves others. Saturn: miserly, no lasting friendships
Venus (Ch. 28 Sl. 1-2, 25-30)Among the harshest sign lines in the book: unreliable, in trouble through attachments, yet an army chief or chief of men, and eminentJupiter: a charitable spouse, many sonsMars: no wealth, honour or happiness. Saturn: lazy, wandering, serves others
Saturn (Ch. 29 Sl. 1-2, 25-30)Hard labour, at odds with relatives, poor, ill-temperedJupiter: happiness, wealth, a king's minister. Sun: farming, great affluence, cattle, industryMoon, Mercury: without happiness or wealth. Venus: unsteady, without pleasures
Paraphrase. Each cell keeps the themes and drops the verdicts on character this page does not repeat.

Two patterns run through the table. Jupiter's aspect lifts every one of the six lines it appears in, and Saturn's is adverse or mixed in all six. And the sign does not confer one temperament: the same thirty degrees give the Sun duty and valour, Mars command, and Venus one of its worst readings. Each graha has its own page: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

The exalted Sun: where the texts part

Saravali ends its Sun-in-Aries line with "the native will also become a king". Bhrigu Sutras, on the Sun in the 1st house (p. 16), says a Sun in Aries brings name and fame, and high learning under benefic aspect; its commentator (p. 17) gives the reason, that for an Aries ascendant the Sun rules the 5th and is exalted. Yet Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 2 says a Sun in an Aries ascendant weakens the sight, and Brihat Jatak, as quoted in Bhrigu Sutras, agrees about the eyes. This app's line for an exalted Sun in the 1st keeps the first half: "classically favourable, tending toward real vitality and good conduct". The Sun in the 1st house follows that disagreement through.

The Moon, and the nodes

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 14 singles out three signs for a Moon in the ascendant - Cancer, Taurus and Aries - as liberal, attractive, rich and enjoying, and reads the other nine adversely; Bhrigu Sutras (pp. 32-33) agrees and quotes Chamatkar Chintamani to the same effect. The sentence this app prints for any Moon in Aries comes from its own curated sign table: "quick to anger but quick to forgive, values independence and directness". For the Sun in Aries it prints "self-assertive, energetic, and prone to taking the lead rather than following".

The engine scores no dignity for Rahu and Ketu, and the texts say little about them by sign, but Aries is named twice: Saravali Ch. 12 Sloka 10-11 says Rahu in an ascendant of Aries, Taurus or Cancer protects the native from evils, and Bhrigu Sutras (p. 109) reads either node in the 1st in those three signs as kind-hearted and fond of enjoyments.

Aries rising: Mesha Lagna

Saravali Ch. 48 Sloka 3-6 describes a birth with Aries rising: fond of visiting foreign places, a fast walker, skilful in performance, religious, famous and "endowed with various kinds of wealth", but also fickle-minded, lean, with few brothers, and prone to complaints of bile, wind and heat. Its lines on the spouse and the father are left out. With whole-sign houses, which this app uses, Aries rising fixes the lord of every house, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sloka 19-22 says what that does to each graha.

The Yoga Karaka panel in your Kundali prints the same list for an Aries Lagna: Jupiter and Sun auspicious; Saturn, Mercury and Venus malefic; no Yoga Karaka.

The word killer belongs to a longevity calculation this app does not run; it computes no death timing, and the label predicts nothing by itself. The house itself is covered in the 1st house, Tanu Bhava.

Saturn and Jupiter: three sources, three answers

BPHS calls Saturn a malefic for Aries rising, in line with its rule that the lord of the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects (Ch. 34 Sloka 2-7). The commentator of Bhrigu Sutras disagrees: he treats Saturn for an Aries ascendant as a functional benefic because it rules the 10th and 11th (p. 102), and expects good finances from it in the 2nd (p. 100), "extremely favourable results" in its own sign in the 10th (p. 106) and a strong wealth combination in the 11th (p. 107). Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 130) states the case against - for Aries the 11th is at once Saturn's Moolatrikona and the Badhaka house - and then presents a chart where Saturn in the 2nd delivered anyway. The engine carries the badhaka idea in one place: for a movable Lagna it treats the 11th as the badhaka house, and any graha there gets the note "badhaka house (sensitive to affliction)" among its strength reasons.

Jupiter rules the 9th and 12th. BPHS calls it auspicious, with a caution that it gives inauspicious results if "at the disposal of a malefic"; Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, pp. 118-119) reasons that a trine lord offsets the bad house it also owns, so "Jupiter for Aries is a benefic". BPHS then makes a specific exception: the mere conjunction of Saturn with Jupiter will not produce auspicious effects for this Lagna, although they own an angle and a trine. The engine does not apply that exception. Its yoga list runs the general rules, so an Aries Lagna with Jupiter and Saturn together in an angle or trine shows a Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga and a Kendra-Kona link. If the Yogas calculator lists those for your chart, read them beside Sloka 19-22; What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh such entries.

One row appears on every Aries-rising chart in this app. Venus owns the 7th, an angle, and not the 1st, so the dosha check shows a Kendradhipathya Dosha for Venus, graded Mild and worded "its natural benefic nature is muted there rather than reversed; a well-known classical nuance, not a warning sign". It is a property of the Lagna, not a finding about your Venus.

Why angles matter more for this Lagna

The exaltation signs of the Sun, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn - the four movable signs, which are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses from an Aries Lagna - and their debilitation signs are the same four. So for Aries rising each of these grahas is in an angle whenever it is exalted and whenever it is fallen. BPHS Ch. 75 Sloka 1-2 forms a Panchamahapurusha Yoga when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle; for this Lagna that covers Mars in Aries or Capricorn (Ruchaka), Jupiter in Cancer (Hamsa), Saturn in Libra or Capricorn (Sasa) and Venus in Libra (Malavya). Saravali Ch. 35 builds several royal combinations on the same Lagna - the Moon, Mars and Jupiter in an Aries ascendant (Sloka 7), Mars there with Jupiter in Cancer (Sloka 8), the Sun there with Jupiter in Sagittarius and the Moon with Saturn in Libra (Sloka 24) - and Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 76) adds a "very rare and good yoga for happiness": Venus deeply exalted at the end of Pisces, aspected by an exalted Jupiter from Cancer. Apart from the Panchamahapurusha Yogas, this app detects none of these as named yogas.

A Mars in Aries is in an angle for four Lagnas - Aries, Capricorn, Libra and Cancer - and the engine lists Ruchaka Yoga for each. It is also inside this app's Mangal Dosha houses (the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th) for Aries, Pisces, Capricorn, Libra, Virgo and Taurus Lagnas. The engine applies no own-sign exemption, so one Mars can produce a Ruchaka row and a Mangal Dosha row together. Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not covers the second; Mars in the 1st house the placement.

Aries among the signs: aspects, questions and matching

BPHS Ch. 8 Sloka 1-3 gives the signs aspects of their own: every movable rashi aspects the three fixed ones, leaving out the one next to it, and a graha in a sign aspects as the sign does. Aries therefore aspects Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, and each of them aspects Aries back. The engine publishes this rashi drishti in your Kundali as a separate table from the planetary aspects; for an Aries Lagna, any graha in Aries aspects the 5th, 8th and 11th houses by sign.

In a prashna, a chart cast for the moment of a question, the mobility of the rising sign is read directly. Daivajna Vallabha Ch. 4 Sloka 1 says that if the query ascendant falls in a movable sign, travel "definitely occurs", and Ch. 3 Sloka 5 that a fixed query ascendant brings a gain of status while a movable one does not. The Prashna feature applies both rules, so a question asked while Aries rises gets a yes on travel and no credit for status. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 86) likewise lists the movable signs, Aries first, among those to weigh for foreign travel in a birth chart.

For livelihood, Saravali Ch. 33 Sloka 66-80 reads the sign on the 10th house. If Aries or many of its divisions fall there, which means a Cancer Lagna, one lives "through gardens, intelligence, service, agriculture", by trading in rasa - juices, a word the translator notes also covers minerals and salts - or as an envoy.

An Aries Moon in Kundli matching

Four of the eight kootas in this app's Ashtakoot are read from the Moon sign. None of the books in this app's library contains the Ashtakoot tables; the engine's header names the published references it follows for Bhakoot and Graha Maitri (since October 2026). Run with an Aries Moon against a Moon in each sign, Graha Maitri - the friendship between the lords of the two Moon signs, worth 5 - came out full with Aries, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces, 4 with Cancer, 3 with Taurus and Libra, and 1 with the other four. Bhakoot, the distance between the signs, worth 7, came out zero with Taurus, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces and full with the other six. The nakshatra-based kootas depend on which of the three nakshatras holds the Moon. The Kundli Matching calculator runs all eight, and the Compatibility feature shows what else is compared.

A worked chart: four grahas in Aries

This is an illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine: 18 April 2000, 06:00 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E). Aries rises at 5.60 degrees, and four grahas are in Aries and so in the 1st house. The Moon is in Virgo in the 6th, and Mercury and Venus are in Pisces in the 12th.

One sign, one house, four dignities.

Mars is past 12 degrees, so it is in its own sign, not Moolatrikona. Being in an angle, it forms the row "Mars is in its own sign, Aries, in your 1st house (a kendra) - a Panchamahapurusha Yoga", named Ruchaka, and the same Mars makes the Mangal Dosha row present, graded Mild. Saturn, 3.56 degrees past its deepest fall, is the weakest graha in the chart by Shad Bala and scores 0.14 of 7 rays against the Sun's 6.78. None of the three is combust: they are 14.9, 19.1 and 20.5 degrees from the Sun, outside the engine's orbs of 11, 15 and 17.

The yoga list also carries a Raja Yoga, because the 5th and 9th lords, the Sun and Jupiter, share a house, and a Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga, because the 9th and 10th lords, Jupiter and Saturn, share an angle. The second is exactly the pairing BPHS Ch. 34 Sloka 19-22 says will not produce auspicious effects for this Lagna, and here its Saturn is debilitated. The engine lists the yoga; the sloka and the strength row both argue for reading it lightly.

The divisions separate grahas that look alike in the birth chart, and none is Vargottama. By BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 3-4 the Sun, in the first Drekkana, shows its Dasha results early; Jupiter, in the second, mid-period; Mars and Saturn, in the third, late. The Moon in Chitra starts this life in the Mars Mahadasha, which runs to December 2005; Jupiter's runs from December 2023 to December 2039 and Saturn's from then to December 2058. The engine grades the Mars period good, Jupiter's neutral, and Saturn's challenging: "a demanding, restrictive period requiring patience - delays and pressure rather than outright loss". The Mahadasha of the exalted Sun does not begin until 2102. A strong placement and a period in which it speaks are separate facts.

Timing: dashas and transits through Aries

Dashas

A Moon in Aries opens life in one of three Mahadashas - Ketu, Venus or the Sun - by the nakshatra table above; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator dates the whole sequence and what a Mahadasha is explains the arithmetic. For a graha sitting in Aries, BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 5-6 gives the general test: a Dasha is favourable when its lord is in the Lagna, in exaltation or in its own or a friendly sign, and unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th, in debilitation or in an enemy's sign.

  • The Sun: Sloka 7-11 promise wealth and honours from the government in the Dasha of a Sun in its exaltation sign. See the Sun Mahadasha.
  • Mars: Sloka 27-32 read a strong Mars in Moolatrikona or its own sign as position, land and wealth, with "some unfavourable effects at the end of the Dasha". See the Mars Mahadasha.
  • Saturn: Sloka 57-60 list a debilitated Saturn's Dasha as adverse, and relieve it when Saturn is with or aspected by a benefic, or in an angle or trine. See the Saturn Mahadasha.

The engine's three-level grade follows the same lines: good for a Sun or Mars in Aries unless it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, challenging for a Saturn in Aries wherever it sits, and neutral for the other four unless they are in one of those houses. In the sign-based Chara Dasha, an Aries Lagna runs its twelve periods forward from Aries, and the Aries period lasts the number of signs counted from Aries to Mars, less one: twelve years when Mars is in Aries itself, one when it is in Taurus.

JupiterAbout a year in every twelve: April 2023 to May 2024; April 2035 to April 2036
Saturn2 June to 21 October 2027; 22 February 2028 to 7 August 2029; 7 October 2029 to 16 April 2030. At 20 degrees, its deepest fall, around 3 May 2029
Rahu (mean node)April 2022 to October 2023; November 2040 to June 2042. Ketu, opposite, July 2031 to February 2033
Computed with this app's own astronomy, described on the Methodology page. Other almanacs can differ by a few days for the slow planets.

Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so everyone born in those three windows has a debilitated Saturn in Aries. A placement shared by a whole cohort cannot by itself describe an individual; its house, its aspects and its periods can.

Sade Sati and the other Saturn periods for an Aries Moon

The engine calls Sade Sati active while Saturn transits the 12th, 1st or 2nd sign from the natal Moon: for an Aries Moon, Pisces, Aries and Taurus. By its astronomy the rising phase began when Saturn entered Pisces on 29 March 2025; the peak phase is Saturn's stay in Aries, as dated above; and the setting phase ends when Saturn enters Gemini on 30 May 2032, seven years and two months in all. The app words the period as "intensified pressure and restructuring - traditionally read as a time to consolidate rather than expand, not as an omen". Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 312) reports "a school of thought in North India" in which only the middle two and a half years are adverse for an Aries Moon. The Sade Sati calculator gives today's phase; on 5 October 2026 it is the rising phase for any Moon in Aries.

Two shorter Saturn periods are counted the same way. Ardha Ashtama Sani is Saturn in the 4th from the Moon, which for Aries is Cancer: July 2034 to September 2036. Ashtama Sani is Saturn in the 8th, Scorpio: December 2043 to December 2046, with a break from June to September 2044. The Ashtama Sani calculator reports either. For the other grahas the Gochar calculator counts today's positions from your Moon: on 5 October 2026, for an Aries Moon, it read Saturn in Pisces (the 12th) and Jupiter in Cancer (the 4th) as testing, Rahu in Aquarius (the 11th) as favourable and Ketu in Leo (the 5th) as neutral. The Timing feature shows how dated windows are presented.

Checking it in your own chart

  1. Run the Moon Sign calculator. If it returns Aries, note the nakshatra and pada and find the row in the nine-pada table. Without a birth time, read the note under the result: it names the sign at both ends of the day.
  2. Run the Sun Sign calculator separately. A sidereal Sun in Aries needs a birth date between about 14 April and 15 May.
  3. With a birth time and place, run the Lagna calculator and check the time against the rising window for that month.
  4. Cast the full chart with the Birth Chart calculator and list every graha in Aries with its degree, house, and retrograde and combust flags.
  5. Read each graha's dignity from the dignity table. For Mars the question is which side of 12 degrees it is on; for the Sun and Saturn, how far from 10 and 20 degrees.
  6. If Aries is your Lagna, read the house-lord table, then check the Yogas and dosha lists with the Aries-specific cautions on this page in mind.
  7. Look at timing last: the Mahadasha sequence, then where Saturn and Jupiter are from your Moon.

Common misreadings

  • "I am an Aries." A Western Sun sign uses the tropical zodiac. The sidereal Sun is in Aries from about 14 April to 15 May, and in India the word rashi means the Moon sign, which changes every two and a quarter days.
  • "My rashi is Mesha, so Aries is my Lagna." They are separate facts on separate clocks. The Moon holds Aries for about 55 hours; the horizon holds it for about 95 minutes.
  • "Mars in Aries is Moolatrikona." Only in the first 12 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54). After that it is in its own sign, which BPHS grades at half the good effect of exaltation against three quarters.
  • "An exalted Sun makes everything good." Saravali's own Aries line includes bilious and blood disorders (a classical association, not medical advice), its aspect lines turn adverse under Mercury, Venus or Saturn, and the engine calls the placement favourable only outside the 6th, 8th and 12th houses.
  • "A debilitated Saturn ruins the chart." Everyone born in a window of about two and a half years has it. Saravali reads it well under the aspect of Jupiter or the Sun, and BPHS Ch. 47 relieves its Dasha in an angle or trine or with a benefic.
  • "Jupiter with Saturn is a great yoga for my Aries Lagna." The engine lists it under its general rule; BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22 names it as the pairing that does not deliver for this Lagna.

What are the dates for Aries in Vedic astrology?
For the Sun, about 14 April to 15 May: in 2026 this app has the Sun entering sidereal Aries on 14 April at 09:12 IST and leaving on 15 May at 06:02 IST. But Mesha Rashi usually means the Moon sign, which has no dates of the year; the Moon passes through Aries for about 55 hours every 27.3 days. The Moon Sign calculator finds it from your birth date.
Who rules Aries, and which planets are strong in it?
Mars rules it (BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 6-7). The Sun is exalted in it, deepest at 10 degrees; Mars is in Moolatrikona for the first 12 degrees and in its own sign after; Saturn is debilitated, deepest at 20 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54). This engine reads Jupiter as in a friendly sign and the Moon, Mercury and Venus as neutral.
Which nakshatras are in Aries?
Ashwini (0 to 13 degrees 20 minutes), Bharani (13 degrees 20 to 26 degrees 40) and the first pada of Krittika (26 degrees 40 to 30). A Moon in them starts life in the Ketu, Venus or Sun Mahadasha respectively.
Is Aries a fire sign in Vedic astrology?
Yes. BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 6-7 calls Mesh fiery, and Sl. 5 groups it with Leo and Sagittarius as bilious. It is also movable, male, a quadruped sign that rises back first and is strong at night. This engine uses the element and the mobility and none of the rest.
Which planets are good and bad for Aries Lagna?
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-22: Jupiter and the Sun are auspicious; Saturn, Mercury and Venus are malefics; Mars is helpful although it also rules the 8th; Venus is the maraka. Bhrigu Sutras' commentator differs on Saturn, treating it as a functional benefic for this Lagna because it rules the 10th and 11th.
Is Saturn in Aries always bad?
It is debilitated there in every text, and this engine grades its Mahadasha challenging. But Saravali Ch. 29 reads it as affluent under the Sun's aspect and as happy and wealthy under Jupiter's, and BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 relieves its Dasha in an angle or trine or with a benefic.
Does Mars in its own sign cancel Mangal Dosha?
Not in this app. The dosha check looks only at the house Mars occupies - the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th - and applies no exemption for Aries or Scorpio. A Mars in Aries in an angle will show a Ruchaka Yoga row as well, and the two are read together. See Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not.
When is Sade Sati for Mesha Rashi?
By this app's astronomy, from Saturn's entry into Pisces on 29 March 2025 to its entry into Gemini on 30 May 2032, with the peak phase, Saturn in Aries itself, running from June 2027 to April 2030 apart from two short breaks. The Sade Sati calculator reports the phase for today.
Does the app suggest remedies, gemstones or lucky colours for Aries?
No. Some of the source books do, and those passages are not carried over. The app reports placements, strengths and dated periods, and leaves remedies out for every sign.
