Mithuna is Mercury's own sign, the first of the four dual rashis, and the one sign in which none of the seven grahas is exalted, debilitated or in Moolatrikona. This guide sets out what BPHS and Saravali say about it with chapter and sloka, what sits inside its 30 degrees, how Gemini works as a Lagna, and when its dashas and transits run.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

Gemini, Mithuna in Sanskrit, is the third of the twelve rashis: the sidereal zodiac from 60 to 90 degrees. BPHS gives the sign a sloka and a half - a pair, man and woman, carrying a mace and a lute; airy, two-footed, ruled by Mercury - and, like Saravali, spends far more words on what each graha does there. Alone among the twelve, Gemini holds no exaltation, debilitation or Moolatrikona of any of the seven grahas, so a planet in it is read through its relationship with Mercury, the lord.

This page sets out what the texts say, with chapter and sloka; what lies inside the sign; how this app's engine treats each graha in it; how Gemini behaves as a rising sign; and when its periods and transits run. It is a reference for rules, not a portrait of "Gemini people". To find out whether your Moon is in Gemini, use the Moon Sign calculator.

Three different things are called "Gemini"

BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 4-6 divides one circle twice, into 27 nakshatras and into 12 rashis, and names the rashi rising in the east the Lagna. A chart can therefore "be Gemini" in three independent ways. In Indian usage "my rashi is Mithuna" means the first: the Moon was in Gemini at birth. Moon sign and nakshatra explains why that one carries the name.

Moon: 134 passes, 2020-2029. Sun: ingresses for 2025-2028. Lagna: a one-minute sweep of the ascendant.

The dates are sidereal. This app uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, 24.23 degrees on 5 October 2026 (see the Methodology page). In 2026 the engine puts the Sun in sidereal Gemini from 15 June, 12:36 IST, to 16 July, 23:27 IST; the tropical Gemini of Western Sun-sign columns ran, by the same Sun, from 21 May to 21 June. The two overlap for about six days, so someone born on 1 June with a Western Gemini Sun has a sidereal Sun in Taurus, and the Sun Sign calculator will say so.

The Lagna runs on the fastest clock. Saravali Ch. 3 Sloka 37-38 lists Gemini among the signs of medium ascension, and Daivajna Vallabha Ch. 10 Sloka 6 repeats the list. Swept minute by minute at New Delhi, the engine has Gemini rising for 134 minutes, nearer the long signs (Leo to Scorpio, 136 to 140) than to Capricorn at 102. On 20 June 2026 the window at New Delhi opened at 05:09 IST, fourteen minutes before sunrise, and it moves about two hours earlier each month: 15:23 in mid-January, 21:25 in mid-October. A birth time far outside the window for its month means the time or the place needs checking with the Lagna calculator.

How the texts describe Mithuna

BPHS Ch. 4 calls the twelve rashis the limbs of Time personified (Sloka 1-2) and describes Mithun in Sloka 9: it rises head first, is pictured as a man and a woman carrying a mace and a lute, lives in the west, is airy and two-footed, strong at night, a village dweller, even in body and grass-green, and its ruler is Mercury. Saravali Ch. 3, "Rasi Description", draws the same couple, with a veena and a mace (Sloka 3-4).

Classical classifications. The humour and limb entries are what the texts say, not medical advice.

Three rows are less settled than they look. BPHS Sloka 5 gives the humour of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius as mixed, yet Sloka 9 calls Mithun windy. Saravali Ch. 3 Sloka 24 lists Gemini among the night signs, while Sloka 23 says the human signs are strong by day. And where BPHS and Saravali give Gemini the arms, the modern Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 214) gives it the shoulders, arms and lungs. Two entries carry a rule for use: Saravali Ch. 3 Sloka 5-6 says a benefic in a sign strengthens the corresponding limb and a malefic weakens it, and Sloka 25 says a rashi is strong when aspected by its lord, by a friend of its lord, or by Mercury or Jupiter.

Of all this the engine keeps four things: the two names (Gemini, Mithuna), the lord (Mercury), the element (Air) and the mobility (common). The element feeds the "dominant element" line among your Kundali quick insights. The mobility decides where the Navamsa count starts, which signs Gemini aspects, and which house is flagged as the badhaka for a Gemini Lagna. Colour, direction, humour and day or night strength are not used.

Inside the sign: three nakshatras, nine padas

Thirty degrees hold two and a quarter nakshatras: the last two padas of Mrigashira, all of Ardra and the first three padas of Punarvasu. Each pada is 3 degrees 20 minutes wide, which is also the width of a Navamsa, and BPHS Ch. 6 Sloka 12 starts the Navamsa count of a dual sign from the fifth sign from it: for Gemini, Libra. So the Moon's degree in Gemini fixes three things at once: its nakshatra and pada, its Navamsa sign, and the lord of the first Vimshottari Mahadasha.

Saravali Ch. 3 Sloka 13 names the ninth Navamsa of a dual sign Vargottama and says a Lagna there makes the native prominent among his own people. The engine marks any graha or Lagna in the last 3 degrees 20 minutes of Gemini as Vargottama; the Navamsa (D9) calculator shows the flag and Navamsa, the second chart explains what it is for. Four of the nine padas belong to Ardra, so roughly four Gemini Moons in nine open life in Rahu's eighteen-year Mahadasha.

The other divisions of Gemini

  • Hora (BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 5-6; Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 14): Gemini is an odd sign, so its first 15 degrees are the Sun's Hora (D2) and the last 15 the Moon's.
  • Drekkana (BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 7-8): 0 to 10 degrees falls in Gemini, 10 to 20 in Libra, 20 to 30 in Aquarius. BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 3-4 adds a timing rule: a graha in the first Drekkana (D3) of its sign shows its Dasha effects early in the period, in the second in the middle, in the third at the end.
  • Trimshamsa (BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 27-28; Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 15): the odd-sign order, so 0 to 5 degrees Mars, 5 to 10 Saturn, 10 to 18 Jupiter, 18 to 25 Mercury, 25 to 30 Venus, as the Trimshamsa (D30) calculator shows.

Dignity: Mercury's own sign, nobody's exaltation

BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 49-54 lists every exaltation, debilitation and Moolatrikona, and Saravali Ch. 3 Sloka 34-36 repeats the list. None falls in Gemini. Mercury's exaltation and Moolatrikona are in Virgo; Bhrigu Sutras (p. 9) adds that the whole of Gemini is its own sign as well. For the other six grahas the engine decides between friendly, neutral and hostile from the fivefold relationship with Mercury: the natural one, which is fixed, plus the temporary one of BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 56, which makes a graha in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from another its friend for that chart, and its enemy anywhere else.

Engine run with Mercury placed in each sign in turn. The figure is positional strength, one component of Shad Bala.

Two consequences follow. The Sun is never far from Mercury: on every day of 1990-2039 with the Sun in Gemini, the engine had Mercury in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer, and in Gemini itself on 47 per cent of them. So a Gemini Sun reads "Enemy sign" in roughly half of all charts and "Friendly sign" in the rest, on Mercury's position alone; BPHS Ch. 50 Sloka 29-32 is blunter and counts Mithun among the Sun's inimical rashis without condition. Second, any graha conjunct Mercury in Gemini loses a step, because a graha in the same sign is a temporary enemy.

Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 187) has a second name for Jupiter here: detrimented, 180 degrees from its own sign, and Ketu in Gemini with it. On the nodes the books part. BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 34-39 names Mithun the Moolatrikona of Rahu; Bhrigu Sutras (p. 13) reports that Uttara Kalamrita agrees while Sanketnidhi makes Gemini Rahu's exaltation sign. The engine leaves Rahu and Ketu out of dignity scoring. One engine rule favours the sign as a whole: its Shad Bala gives the Chesta (motional) point to Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in either of Mercury's signs, and to the Sun and Moon from Capricorn to Gemini, so all seven collect it here. See the Shad Bala calculator and Mercury in Vedic astrology.

Each graha in Gemini, as Saravali reads it

Saravali gives each graha a chapter of sign-by-sign results, followed by the aspects that modify them; for every graha but the Moon the aspect lines treat Gemini and Virgo together as Mercury's houses. The table paraphrases the Gemini lines. Read it as the text's vocabulary for a placement, not as a forecast. The physical and sexual verdicts are left out.

Paraphrased from the corpus translation. An aspect line applies only when that graha aspects the placement in your chart.

Six of the seven sign lines are about learning, speech, writing or the arts. Jupiter, which the dignity table treats among the worst, gets affluence and eloquence, and no aspect line of loss; Saturn, for which the engine calls Gemini friendly ground, gets debts and toil unless the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter or Venus aspects it. The text and the dignity ladder measure different things, and a reading that uses only one is using half the material.

Gemini rising: Mithuna Lagna

When Gemini is on the eastern horizon the engine uses whole-sign houses: Gemini is the 1st house, Cancer the 2nd, and so on. BPHS Ch. 34 Sloka 25-26 then classes the grahas by the houses they rule. Mars, Jupiter and the Sun are malefics; Venus is, in the translation's words, "the only auspicious Grah"; the conjunction of Jupiter with Saturn works as it does for Aries rising; and the Moon is the chief maraka, depending on her association. The engine's table holds exactly that list, with no Yoga Karaka, and prints it under your chart with the citation.

Maraka, often translated "killer", is a class of house lord. The app lists the class and predicts no death from it.

Jupiter and Saturn: the yoga BPHS withholds

Saturn rules the 9th house and Jupiter the 10th, the pair whose conjunction usually makes the best-known Raj Yoga. For Aries rising, BPHS Ch. 34 Sloka 19-22 says the mere conjunction of Saturn with Jupiter brings no auspicious result, and Sloka 25-26 applies the same to Gemini, where Saturn also rules the 8th. Here the engine does not follow BPHS. Its Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga is coded from a different book and fires whenever the 9th and 10th lords share a kendra or trikona: with Jupiter and Saturn placed together in each house of a Gemini Lagna in turn, it appeared in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th. So if the Yogas calculator shows that row on a Gemini-rising chart, BPHS reads the same conjunction as unproductive. Jupiter also carries the engine's mild Kendradhipathya Dosha on every such chart, as owner of two angles: a benefic nature "muted there rather than reversed".

Where the later books differ

Later sources soften the list. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 119) argues that owning a trine offsets owning a difficult house and so counts Venus and Saturn as benefics for Gemini; it calls Mars a malefic of the first order for this ascendant (p. 112) and Jupiter a maraka (p. 129). The commentary in Bhrigu Sutras reads by placement: Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 7th (p. 81) or Pisces in the 10th (pp. 83-84) and Mercury in the 9th or 10th (pp. 70-71) form strong Dhana Yogas, combinations for wealth, and Saturn in Aquarius in the 9th a strong Raja Yoga (p. 106).

Which Mahapurusha Yogas can form

BPHS Ch. 75 Sloka 1-2 forms a Panchamahapurusha Yoga when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra from the Lagna. For Gemini rising three can form: Bhadra with Mercury in Gemini in the 1st or Virgo in the 4th, Hamsa with Jupiter in Sagittarius in the 7th or Pisces in the 10th, and Malavya with Venus exalted in Pisces in the 10th. The strong signs of Mars and Saturn fall outside the kendras, so Ruchaka and Sasa cannot; an engine sweep confirms each case. The app renders Bhadra as "sharp-minded and articulate, well-read, independent-natured and protective of family". What a yoga in your chart means explains how common such rows are.

Saravali Ch. 48 Sloka 10-13 describes birth with Gemini rising: charitable, gentle, truthful, impatient and crafty, drawn to music, the fine arts, the Vedas and poetry. The chapter closes with the condition that matters: the effects come in full only when the rising sign or its lord is strong. The engine adds two Lagna-wide rules. It flags the 7th as the badhaka house of a common-sign Lagna, so a graha in Sagittarius carries the note "badhaka house (sensitive to affliction)"; BPHS Ch. 50 Sloka 20-21 states its badhaka rule for movable signs only, and the 7th for a common sign is from Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology, which calls Jupiter, 7th lord for a Gemini Lagna, the badhaka. And Mars in Gemini itself is Mars in the 1st house, which the Mangal Dosha calculator flags and Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not puts in proportion.

Gemini among the signs: aspects, questions and matching

BPHS Ch. 8 Sloka 1-3 gives signs aspects of their own: a dual sign aspects the other three dual signs. Gemini therefore exchanges rashi drishti with Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces - for a Gemini Lagna, its own 4th, 7th and 10th houses. In horary work, Daivajna Vallabha Ch. 3 Sloka 5 gives status to a fixed query ascendant, denies it to a movable one and says both outcomes occur for a dual one, and the app's Prashna engine reports exactly that. Saravali Ch. 33 Sloka 66-80 adds a livelihood line: with Gemini on the 10th house, counted from the Lagna or the Moon, the living comes from water-borne trade, precious stones, vessels, writing and accountancy.

A Gemini Moon in Kundli matching

The app's Kundli Matching runs the eight-part Ashtakoot from the two Moons. For a Gemini Moon, Graha Maitri scores its full 5 against a Moon in Taurus, Gemini, Virgo or Libra, and Bhakoot scores 0 of 7 against Taurus, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius, the signs 12th, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th from Gemini. None of the engine's source books contains the Ashtakoot point tables; its header names the published references it follows for these two kootas; see the Compatibility feature.

Take a birth at 07:30 IST on 30 May 1987 in New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E). The engine puts the Lagna at 13.50 degrees of Gemini, with the Moon, Mars and Mercury all rising in the sign. A Western column would also call this birth a Gemini, for a different reason: the tropical Sun was at 8 degrees of Gemini, while the sidereal Sun was at 14.48 degrees of Taurus, in the 12th house.

Three things from this page show up at once. The Moon and Mars share the sign with Mercury, so each drops a step: the Moon from friendly to neutral, Mars from neutral to an enemy sign. Mercury in its own sign in the 1st forms Bhadra Yoga and Jupiter in Pisces in the 10th forms Hamsa Yoga - while BPHS classes that same Jupiter a malefic for this Lagna and the engine attaches Kendradhipathya Dosha to it. One statement describes a strong placement, the other a lordship; neither cancels the other. Mars in the 1st is flagged as Mangal Dosha, graded mild.

Timing follows the Moon. At 11.82 degrees it is in Ardra pada 2, so life opened in Rahu's Mahadasha, which ran to 13 June 1998; Jupiter's followed to 2014, and Saturn's runs to 13 June 2033, when Mercury's seventeen years begin. The engine grades the Saturn period challenging, Saturn being in an enemy sign in the 6th house, and the Mercury period good. Two hours later the Lagna would be Cancer, and none of the Lagna rows would apply.

Timing: dashas and transits through Gemini

Dashas

A Moon in Gemini opens life in one of three Mahadashas - Mars, Rahu or Jupiter - by the nakshatra table above; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator dates the whole sequence and what a Mahadasha is explains the arithmetic. For a graha sitting in Gemini, BPHS Ch. 47 Sloka 5-6 gives the general test: the effects are favourable when the Dasha lord is in the Lagna, in exaltation or in its own sign, and unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, in debilitation or in an inimical sign.

  • Mercury: Sloka 62-65 read a Mercury in its own rashi as gain of wealth and reputation, growth in knowledge and profit in business. See the Mercury Mahadasha.
  • The Sun: BPHS Ch. 50 Sloka 29-32 says the Dasha of a graha in an inimical rashi is full of adversity, and names Mithun among the Sun's. See the Sun Mahadasha.
  • Rahu: Ch. 47 Sloka 34-39 count Mithun as Rahu's Moolatrikona and read a Rahu so dignified as happiness, wealth and conveyances. See the Rahu Mahadasha.
  • Mars and Jupiter: no sloka singles out Gemini; the general test applies, and Mercury's position decides whether the sign counts as hostile. See the Jupiter Mahadasha and the Mars Mahadasha.

The engine's three-level grade follows the same lines: good for a Mercury in Gemini unless it is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house; neutral for a Moon, Venus or Saturn outside those houses; and, for the Sun, Mars or Jupiter, challenging when Mercury's position makes Gemini an enemy sign and neutral when it does not. In the sign-based Chara Dasha, a Gemini Lagna runs its periods in reverse order - Gemini, Taurus, Aries and so on - because the sign in its 9th house, Aquarius, is even-footed (BPHS Ch. 46 Sloka 167). The Gemini period lasts twelve years when Mercury is in Gemini itself and one when it is in Cancer.

Sade Sati and Saturn for a Gemini Moon

The engine calls Sade Sati active while Saturn transits the 12th, 1st or 2nd sign from the natal Moon: for a Gemini Moon, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer. On 5 October 2026 Saturn is at 17.09 degrees of Pisces, the 10th from Gemini, so Sade Sati is not active and the Gochar calculator grades that transit neutral. By the engine's astronomy the next rising phase begins when Saturn enters Taurus on 7 August 2029, lapses from 7 October 2029 to 16 April 2030 while Saturn is back in Aries, and then runs on; the peak, Saturn in Gemini itself, covers 3 June 2032 to 13 July 2034, and the setting phase ends on 28 August 2036. The app words the period as "intensified pressure and restructuring", "not as an omen". Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 312) reports a North Indian school that holds only the last two and a half years adverse for a Gemini Moon; the engine does not apply that. The Sade Sati calculator gives your phase, the Ashtama Sani calculator covers Saturn in Virgo and Capricorn, and the Timing feature page describes how the app uses periods and transits.

Common misreadings

  • "I am a Gemini" from a Western column is not Mithuna Rashi. The first is the tropical Sun; the second is the sidereal Moon, and the two zodiacs stand 24 degrees apart.
  • No planet is exalted in Gemini among the seven grahas. A claim of exaltation here can only be about Rahu, and only by one of two competing lists.
  • "Malefic sign" is not a verdict on anyone. BPHS calls every odd sign malefic and male in the same sloka that makes Gemini dual.
  • A Dharma-Karmadhipati row on a Gemini-rising chart is the engine's rule, not Parashara's. BPHS says the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction does not produce the yoga for this Lagna.
  • "Dual" is not a character judgement. In the texts the word fixes arithmetic: where the Navamsa count starts, which signs aspect which, and how a horary ascendant is read.

How to check this in your own chart

  1. Run the Moon Sign calculator with your birth date, adding the time if the Moon changed sign that day; the Nakshatra calculator gives the nakshatra and pada.
  2. Run the Lagna calculator with your birth time and place. If the time is uncertain, what an unknown birth time costs sets out what still holds.
  3. Open the Birth Chart calculator to see which grahas are in Gemini, in which house, and where Mercury is. Read each against the dignity and Saravali tables, then the Lagna table if Gemini rises.
  4. Check when it speaks: the Vimshottari Dasha calculator for the period of each graha in Gemini, the Gochar calculator for today's transits from your Moon. The book behind every rule here is listed on the Sources page.
Is Mithuna Rashi the same as being a Gemini in Western astrology?
No. Mithuna Rashi means the Moon was in sidereal Gemini at birth, which happens for about 55 hours in every 27.3 days. A Western Gemini has the tropical Sun in Gemini, 21 May to 21 June in 2026; the sidereal Sun is there from 15 June to 16 July. A person can be both, either or neither.
Who rules Gemini, and is any planet exalted or debilitated there?
Mercury rules it (BPHS Ch. 4 Sloka 9; Saravali Ch. 3 Sloka 11). None of the seven grahas has its exaltation, debilitation or Moolatrikona in Gemini; Mercury's are in Virgo and Pisces (BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 49-54). For Rahu the books differ between Moolatrikona and exaltation, and the engine does not score the nodes.
Which planets are good for a Gemini Lagna?
BPHS Ch. 34 Sloka 25-26 names Venus, lord of the 5th and 12th, as the only auspicious graha, lists Mars, Jupiter and the Sun as malefics and the Moon as a maraka, and names no Yoga Karaka. Later books add Saturn, as lord of the 9th, to the benefics, and read Mercury and Jupiter well in particular houses.
My Sun is in Gemini. Why does the app call it an enemy sign in one chart and a friendly sign in another?
Because the label depends on Mercury. The Sun and Mercury are natural neutrals, so the temporary relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sloka 56 decides: with Mercury next door in Taurus or Cancer it is a temporary friend and the Sun is in a friendly sign; with Mercury in Gemini too it is a temporary enemy and the label is "Enemy sign".
When is the next Sade Sati for Mithuna Rashi?
By this app's astronomy it starts when Saturn enters Taurus on 7 August 2029, peaks while Saturn is in Gemini from 30 May 2032 to 13 July 2034, and ends when Saturn leaves Cancer on 28 August 2036. On 5 October 2026 it is not active.
Does a Moon in Gemini describe my personality?
It gives one line, not a portrait. The app's own line for a Moon in Gemini is "perceptive and witty, learns people's motives quickly, enjoys variety"; Saravali Ch. 23 Sloka 16 speaks of intelligence, eloquence and a jocular nature. Both are modified by the Moon's house, its aspects and where Mercury sits.
