Ardra is the sixth nakshatra, Gemini 6 degrees 40 minutes to Gemini 20 degrees, wholly inside one sign. It is the first nakshatra ruled by Rahu in the Vimshottari scheme, and Rahu's 18-year period is the third longest of the nine. It is also the reference star from which BPHS counts the Ashtottari dasha. If your Moon was in Ardra at birth, it sets the Rahu Mahadasha your life began in, your yoni, gana and nadi in matching, and the sub-lord your Moon sits under. The nakshatra calculator shows your nakshatra and pada.
This page sets out what the books in this app's corpus say about Ardra, with chapter, sloka or page, beside what the app's engine computes for it. The books are Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Kalyana Varma's Saravali, Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara and Advanced Predictive Astrology, listed on the sources page. Ardra's classical descriptions are among the harshest in Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, so this page is explicit about what it reports and what it declines to repeat. For Moon sign and nakshatra in general, see Moon sign and nakshatra; for the sign, Gemini, Mithuna Rashi.
Where Ardra sits in Gemini
Five nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes take the zodiac to Gemini 6 degrees 40 minutes, so Ardra runs from there to Gemini 20 degrees (Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, Ch. II, pp. 22-23, for the arithmetic). All four padas are in Gemini, a Mercury sign. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54 places no exaltation, debilitation or Mooltrikona of the seven grahas in Gemini, so no graha in Ardra has those dignities in the engine's table; the labels below are all own-sign, friend, neutral or enemy.
| Pada | Degrees of Gemini | Navamsa sign (engine) | Kala Chakra Deha / Jiva (BPHS Ch. 46) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 deg 40 to 10 deg 00 | Sagittarius | Kark / Meen |
| 2 | 10 deg 00 to 13 deg 20 | Capricorn | Vrishabh / Mithun |
| 3 | 13 deg 20 to 16 deg 40 | Aquarius | Makar / Mithun |
| 4 | 16 deg 40 to 20 deg 00 | Pisces | Mesh / Dhanu |
Gemini is a dual sign, so the engine counts its navamsas from the 5th sign, Libra; Ardra's padas are Gemini's 3rd to 6th navamsas, Sagittarius to Pisces. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 87-88 gives the same from the nakshatra count: five have passed, 5 divided by 3 leaves 2, times 4 is 8, plus the pada gives the 9th to 12th signs from Mesh. None returns to Gemini, so no graha in Ardra is Vargottama. See the Navamsa (D9) calculator for your chart.
Rudra, a single bright star, and whole grains
BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 24-26 lists the nakshatra deities as the lords of the Saptavimshamsa's 27 parts; the sixth is Isa. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's entry (Ch. IV, p. 95) names the deity as Siva or Rudra and describes Ardra as like a lotus or a gem, consisting of a single bright star. The Saptavimshamsa (D27) calculator uses the BPHS list.
The entry gives Ardra's sex as female, its tatthwa as Jala (water), its region as the East and its body part as the eyes, and says it is represented by whole grains. The direction table (p. 90) and body-part table (p. 91) agree on East and eyes. The entry names a caste, which is not carried over. Its list of occupations begins with oil-mongers and washermen and then turns into a list of moral failings and criminal callings; that part is not repeated here.
How Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara classifies Ardra
| Classification (JSS Ch. IV) | Ardra | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sex (p. 87) | Female | Most nakshatras |
| Sristi / Sthithi / Laya (p. 88) | Laya | Third of the Rohini-Mrigashira-Aardra group |
| Durithamsa (p. 88) | Padas 3 and 4 | The 3rd and 4th quarters of Laya stars, "believed to be unfavourable": Gemini 13 deg 20 to 20 deg |
| Tatthwa (p. 89) | Jala (water) | First of the six water stars, with Punarvasu, Pushya, Aaslesha, Makha, Pubba |
| Direction (p. 90) | Eastern regions | With Punarvasu and Pushya |
| Nature (p. 91) | Hot ("thrisna") | With Aslesha, Jyeshta and Moola |
| Body part (p. 91) | Eyes | Fourth in the table |
The book ties its nature labels to timing: during the period of a planet situated in a particular star, effects will be felt according to these characteristics (p. 91). In its terms, then, the dasha of any graha placed in Ardra carries the "hot" quality the book shares among Ardra, Aslesha, Jyeshta and Moola. It gives no further rule. The body-part table, it says, is useful with the 6th lord's position for judging where a disease shows; for Ardra that is the eyes. Both are reported as the book's claims, not medical advice, and the app uses neither. Its yoga list (pp. 28-29) says the 26th yoga, Indra, begins at Aridra, a statement about where the yoga's arc starts, not about people.
What the texts say about a person born in Ardra, and what the app does with it
Both of Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's descriptions of Ardra are unfavourable. The prose (p. 95) is a string of moral verdicts, which this page does not repeat as a reading of anyone. The translated sloka is milder in kind, describing temperament rather than morals: an excessive appetite, a reddish complexion, a fondness for quarrel, a short temper, disobedience, and an unwillingness to forgive even when asked. The book conditions every entry on a powerful Moon (p. 91).
The engine's NAKSHATRA_TRAITS table works from the sloka and turns it into a tendency: you tend to be "quick to anger and hard to satisfy, with a sharp appetite for life and low patience for being crossed". The table's comment states the rule applied to all 27 entries: caste labels dropped, appearance and spouse predictions dropped, harsh character judgements softened to a temperament tendency rather than a moral verdict. For Ardra, the complexion clause is dropped and the prose's verdicts are not used at all.
What is left out, and why
The Ardra entry names a caste, the chapter has a caste table, and the entry's occupation list and prose include moral and criminal labels. This app does not classify people by caste or deliver moral verdicts from a birth star, so none of that is repeated here or used by the engine.
Saravali does not name Ardra in the corpus copy; nor does Bhrigu Sutras. Advanced Predictive Astrology mentions it twice in a health chapter: its table of "humour producing asterisms" puts Arudra in the Vata column (Vol. II, p. 225), and a later page lists Arudra among nine stars said to "rule over wind" (p. 240). That is one modern book's grouping, reported as such and not as medical advice.
The same book (p. 83) makes a general remark about a Rahu-ruled star, using Swati, not Ardra, as its example: when the Ascendant and the Moon fall in the same constellation ruled by the same planet, it reads the mind as dwelling strongly on sensual things. It is one author's view and the app does not apply it. And because every Ardra Moon is a Gemini Moon, Saravali's sign-level chapter (Ch. 23) applies to it; that reading is covered on the Gemini page and not repeated here.
The Moon's Navamsa in each Ardra pada: Saravali Ch. 24
Saravali Ch. 24 reads the Moon by its Navamsa and the graha aspecting it. An Ardra Moon is in Jupiter's Navamsa in padas 1 and 4 (Sagittarius and Pisces, Sl. 16-18) and Saturn's in padas 2 and 3 (Capricorn and Aquarius, Sl. 19-21). Among the milder readings: in a Jupiter Navamsa aspected by Jupiter the text speaks of good looks, the favour of the powerful and wide fame; aspected by Mercury, of a jocular nature; aspected by Mars, of skill with weapons and fame. In a Saturn Navamsa aspected by Jupiter it speaks of devotion to one's own work and greatness. Other lines in both groups are harsh, about health, children or character, and are not repeated.
Sl. 22-24 scale the readings: full in a Vargottama Navamsa, medium in the Moon's own (Cancer), minor elsewhere, unless the Navamsa lord is stronger than the sign lord, in which case the Navamsa effects prevail. No Ardra pada is Vargottama or in Cancer, so on Saravali's terms every Ardra Moon gives its Navamsa reading at the minor level unless that strength condition is met. The app does not compute Ch. 24; the Navamsa and aspects it shows let you read it by hand.
Rahu, the lord of Ardra, and the 18-year Mahadasha
In BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12-15 the Vimshottari cycle begins at Krittika with the Sun, Moon and Mars; the fourth lord is Rahu, with 18 years, so Ardra, fourth in the cycle, is Rahu's. The engine's nakshatraSubdivision() agrees. Rahu also rules Swati and Shatabhisha. For Rahu as a graha, see Rahu in Vedic astrology.
Worked example, checked by hand
Moon at Gemini 11 degrees 40 minutes on 1 January 2000, 5 degrees into Ardra. 5 / 13.333 = 0.375 crossed, 0.625 of 18 years left: 11.25 years. The engine's vimshottariTimeline() ends that Rahu balance on 1 April 2011. Adding full periods by hand, Jupiter's 16 years then run to about April 2027 and Saturn's 19 to about April 2046.
The balance rule is BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 16. With Rahu's period so long, the spread is wide: a Moon at the very start of Ardra begins with almost 18 years of Rahu, one near Gemini 20 degrees with only weeks. Your dates are in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator; the period is described on the Rahu Mahadasha page. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 1-8 makes the content of a dasha depend on the lord's placement and lordship in your chart, and since Rahu owns no sign in BPHS's scheme, its placement and associations carry the weight.
Which sub-period is running at birth
BPHS Ch. 51 Sl. 2 gives the first Antar Dasha of a Mahadasha to its own lord, then the usual order, each lasting the Mahadasha's years times the sub-lord's years over 120. Inside Rahu's 18 years that makes Rahu's own sub-period 2.7 years, Jupiter's 2.4 and Saturn's 2.85, by hand. In the worked example 0.375 of the 18 years, 6.75 years, had elapsed at birth: past Rahu and Jupiter (5.1 years together) and into Saturn's. The engine's sub-lord table, built from the same proportions, puts Gemini 11 degrees 40 minutes in the Saturn sub. The two agree, as they must: the Moon's sub-lord at birth is the Antar Dasha lord at birth.
| Antar Dasha in the Rahu Mahadasha | Length (18 x lord years / 120) |
|---|---|
| Rahu | 2.70 years |
| Jupiter | 2.40 years |
| Saturn | 2.85 years |
| Mercury | 2.55 years |
| Ketu | 1.05 years |
| Venus | 3.00 years |
| Sun | 0.90 years |
| Moon | 1.50 years |
| Mars | 1.05 years |
Ardra and the Ashtottari dasha
Ardra has a special place in one of the other dasha systems. BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 17-20 describe Ashtottari, recommended when Rahu is not in the Ascendant but in a kendra or trikona from the Ascendant's lord, and its count starts here: "From 4 Nakshatras from Ardra commences the Dasha of Sūrya", then three for the Moon, four for Mars, three for Mercury, four for Saturn, three for Jupiter, four for Rahu and three for Venus, with Abhijit included to make 28. Ardra itself is therefore the first of the Sun's four, and the Sun's Ashtottari dasha is 6 years. Sl. 21-22 add that each nakshatra carries a quarter of a malefic's dasha and a third of a benefic's, and that the balance at birth is then worked as for Vimshottari.
Read literally, that gives an Ardra Moon a simple hand calculation. The Sun is a malefic, so each of its four nakshatras carries a quarter of its 6 years, 1.5 years. A Moon 5 degrees into Ardra has crossed 0.375 of the nakshatra, so 0.375 x 1.5 = about 0.56 years of the Sun's Ashtottari dasha has expired, and since Ardra is the first of the Sun's four stars, about 5.44 years of it remain at birth. That is the arithmetic of the slokas, and the app's Ashtottari follows the same rule, dating the balance and every period after it.
The engine builds Ashtottari in full, reading Abhijit, the 28th slot the 4-3-4-3 grouping needs, from the Moon's longitude as Sl. 21-22 describe: the 4th pada of Uttara Ashadha and the first fifteenth of Shravana. It also builds six other systems, shown with it in the alternate dashas calculator. For an Ardra Moon: Shodshottari (from Pushya) Mars, 12 years; Dwadashottari (birth star to Revati) Mars, 17; Panchottari (from Anuradha) Saturn, 14; Shatabdik (from Revati) Saturn, 30; Chaturashiti-sama (from Swati) Jupiter, 12; Dwisaptati-sama (from Mula) Saturn, 9. Shastihayani (Sl. 40-41) lists Ardra under the Sun, 10 years; the app shows that lord with a balance at birth and dated periods, found by the published rule "as in Vimshottari", which comes from outside BPHS (Sanjay Rath), since the sloka itself gives no balance rule. Shat-trimshat-sama (Sl. 42-43, counted from Shravana) is built too and gives an Ardra Moon Mars, 4 years.
In the Kala Chakra, Sl. 77 puts Ardra in the Apsavya group whose padas are reckoned like Mrigashira's, so its Deha and Jiva are those in the first table, and its nine dasha signs per pada are Mrigashira's. Adding the Sl. 84 years along those rows gives 86, 83, 85 and 100. Ardra's Navamsas, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, carry Sl. 89's figures 100, 85, 83 and 86, so the rows match in reverse pada order, as they do for Mrigashira. The app computes the Kala Chakra from these rows.
| Ardra pada | Nine Kala Chakra dasha signs, in order (as for Mrigashira, Sl. 78-81) | Total years |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Meen, Kumbh, Makar, Dhanu, Vrischik, Tula, Kanya, Simh, Kark | 86 |
| 2 | Mithun, Vrishabh, Mesh, Dhanu, Makar, Kumbh, Meen, Mesh, Vrishabh | 83 |
| 3 | Mithun, Simh, Kark, Kanya, Tula, Vrischik, Meen, Kumbh, Makar | 85 |
| 4 | Dhanu, Vrischik, Tula, Kanya, Simh, Kark, Mithun, Vrishabh, Mesh | 100 |
Ardra as a dignity for every graha
Running the engine's dignityOf() anywhere in Ardra, with natural relationships only, gives: Sun, neutral; Moon, friendly sign; Mars, enemy sign; Mercury, own sign; Jupiter, enemy sign; Venus, friendly sign; Saturn, friendly sign. Rahu and Ketu are outside the engine's dignity table and always read as neutral there.
Rahu in its own nakshatra
The classical texts do give Rahu dignities, even though the engine does not. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 sets them out before describing Rahu's dasha: Rahu is exalted in Vrishabh, its Mooltrikona is Mithun, and its own sign is Kumbh, with some sages giving Kanya instead; for Ketu the exaltation is Vrischik, the Mooltrikona Dhanu and the own sign Vrischik, with some saying Meen. So a Rahu placed in Ardra, its own nakshatra, is in its Mooltrikona sign by BPHS. The same sloka group then says that when Rahu is in its exaltation sign and the like, its dasha brings acquisition of wealth, conveyances, a new house and recognition, conditions that the rest of the chart must still support.
Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (Ch. III, p. 82) gives a different table: Rahu owns Makara, is exalted in Vrishabha and Mithuna, and is debilitated in Vrischika and Dhanus; Ketu (p. 83) is exalted in Vrischika and Dhanus and debilitated in Vrishabha and Mithuna. By that book a Rahu in Ardra is exalted and a Ketu in Ardra debilitated. The two sources therefore agree that Gemini is a strong sign for Rahu but disagree on what to call it, and on Rahu's own sign. The engine sidesteps both: its dignity table covers only the seven grahas, so Rahu and Ketu always read as neutral. These differences are reported, not resolved.
On Saravali's ray scale (Ch. 36 Sl. 3-6, the formula the engine's planetaryRays() uses), worked by hand, Jupiter gains through Ardra from about 5.9 to 6.4 rays as it nears its exaltation in Cancer, while Mars falls from about 2.0 to 1.5 as it nears its debilitation there, and the Moon falls from about 5.7 to 5.2. The Sun crosses Ardra once a year: the engine's sidereal Sun for 2026 enters on 22 June and leaves on 6 July.
With Ardra rising, the Ascendant is Gemini. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 names Mars, Jupiter and the Sun as malefics for a Gemini Ascendant and Venus as the only auspicious graha, with the Moon as the prime killer depending on her associations; the engine's YOGA_KARAKA_BY_LAGNA row for Gemini matches. The Ascendant needs a birth time and place; the Lagna calculator computes it.
The nine sub-lords inside Ardra
The engine divides Ardra in proportion to the Vimshottari years, starting with Rahu's own arc, the second widest. The sub-lord calculator reports these for every graha.
| Sub-lord | Arc in Gemini | Width |
|---|---|---|
| Rahu | 6 deg 40 to 8 deg 40 | 120.0' |
| Jupiter | 8 deg 40 to 10 deg 27 | 106.7' |
| Saturn | 10 deg 27 to 12 deg 33 | 126.7' |
| Mercury | 12 deg 33 to 14 deg 27 | 113.3' |
| Ketu | 14 deg 27 to 15 deg 13 | 46.7' |
| Venus | 15 deg 13 to 17 deg 27 | 133.3' |
| Sun | 17 deg 27 to 18 deg 07 | 40.0' |
| Moon | 18 deg 07 to 19 deg 13 | 66.7' |
| Mars | 19 deg 13 to 20 deg 00 | 46.7' |
The narrowest arcs, the Sun's 40 minutes and Ketu's and Mars's 47, are crossed by the Moon in about an hour and a half. For why that makes the sub-lord fragile, see the sub-lord and birth time.
Ardra in Ashtakoot matching, and its gana
Running the engine's ashtakoot() with an Ardra Moon gives the values below. The Kundli matching calculator applies them to two charts.
| Koota | Ardra (engine) | From the engine run |
|---|---|---|
| Yoni (4) | Dog | Same animal: Mula (4). Enemy animal Deer: Anuradha and Jyeshtha (0). Others 2 |
| Gana (6) | Manushya | Same gana: Bharani, Rohini, both Phalgunis, both Ashadhas, both Bhadrapadas; Manushya with Deva or Rakshasa scores 3 |
| Nadi (8) | Aadi | Shared with Ashwini, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada (0) |
| Tara (3) | Both directions | Full 3 with Mrigashira, Ardra, Punarvasu, Chitra, Swati, Vishakha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Purva Bhadrapada; 1.5 with the rest |
Ardra's gana is the one value in this table that has changed. No book in this app's library prints a nakshatra gana list, and until October 2026 the engine listed Ardra as Rakshasa, a value an internal audit had questioned. The engine now lists it as Manushya, the assignment three published Kundli-matching references agree on; the comment at the top of compatibilityEngine.js names them. So an Ardra-Deva pair now scores 3 of 6 on Gana instead of 0, and an Ardra-Rakshasa pair 3 instead of 6.
The other values carry the same caveat about convention. The engine's Tara rule never scores 0, since the two inclusive counts between different stars total 29 and cannot both leave 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by 9. For Nadi, Advanced Predictive Astrology's Vata column (Vol. II, p. 225) is exactly the engine's Aadi group. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's vainasika rule (Ch. IV, p. 89), the 22nd star from one's birth star to be avoided for auspicious events, gives Revati for Ardra; the app does not use that rule.
Ardra in muhurat
Ardra is on none of the six favoured lists in the engine's muhurat finder, so a window with the Moon in Ardra loses 6 points on the nakshatra factor and must be carried by tithi, paksha, the Moon's house from your chart, the weekday, Rahu Kaal and your numerology day. The lists cite no source; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's labels for Ardra (hot, Laya, durithamsa in its last two padas) point the same way without being a citation for the lists.
From the engine's Moon positions, sampled every ten minutes, the next passes through Ardra are 30 October 2026 09:10 to 31 October 07:20 IST, 26 November 17:50 to 27 November 15:20 IST, and 24 December 05:00 to 25 December 01:50 IST, each between about 21 and 22 hours long because the Moon's speed varies. The muhurat finder only samples three windows a day, starting at 06:40, 09:15 and 15:30 IST, so each pass touches two or three of them; all would take the 6-point deduction. The Panchang shows the current nakshatra.
Checking Ardra in your own chart
The Moon's nakshatra needs the date and a time, not the place. The Moon covers a pada in about six hours. Its longitude in this app is good to about 0.1-0.3 degrees, as the methodology page explains, so a Moon within a few tenths of a degree of Gemini 6 degrees 40 minutes or 20 degrees could honestly be in Mrigashira or Punarvasu instead, which for Ardra also changes the first Mahadasha from Rahu to Mars or Jupiter. The ayanamsa moves all boundaries together; see why apps disagree on your nakshatra. The Moon sign calculator shows sign and nakshatra together.
Ardra between Mrigashira and Punarvasu
Before Ardra is Mrigashira, the Mars star whose Kala Chakra rows Ardra shares; after it is Punarvasu, ruled by Jupiter, which runs from Gemini into Cancer. Ardra closes the Rohini-Mrigashira-Aardra group as its Laya member and opens the run of six water stars in Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara's tatthwa list. Its sign lord throughout is Mercury.
- Which planet rules Ardra nakshatra?
- Rahu, with an 18-year Mahadasha, in the Vimshottari scheme of BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12-15. Its sign lord is Mercury, because all of Ardra is in Gemini.
- Who is the deity of Ardra?
- BPHS Ch. 6 Sl. 24-26 names Isa; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (Ch. IV, p. 95) names Siva or Rudra.
- What is the symbol of Ardra?
- Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara describes a single bright star, like a lotus or a gem, represented by whole grains. The engine's Yoni animal for Ardra is the Dog, shared with Mula.
- Is Ardra a Rakshasa or Manushya gana nakshatra?
- This app's engine treats it as Manushya, since October 2026, following three published Kundli-matching references that agree on it (named in the engine's file). It used to be Rakshasa. No book in the corpus prints a gana list, so the corpus itself cannot settle it.
- Why does BPHS count the Ashtottari dasha from Ardra?
- BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 17-20 simply begins the Sun's four nakshatras there and assigns the other lords in runs of three and four. The text gives no reason; the app computes Ashtottari by that same count.
- Is any pada of Ardra Vargottama?
- No. The padas fall in the Navamsas Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces, which BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 87-88 confirms.
- Is Ardra good for a muhurat?
- It is on none of this app's six activity lists, so it costs a window 6 points on the nakshatra factor. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara classes it as a hot (thrisna) star.
- What are the durithamsa padas of Ardra?
- Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (Ch. IV, p. 88) calls the 3rd and 4th quarters of every Laya star durithamsa, believed unfavourable. Ardra is a Laya star, so these are Gemini 13 degrees 20 minutes to 20 degrees. The book gives no further rule, and the app does not use the label.
- Which Navamsa is an Ardra Moon in?
- Sagittarius in pada 1, Capricorn in pada 2, Aquarius in pada 3 and Pisces in pada 4, by the engine's Navamsa rule and BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 87-88 alike. Saravali Ch. 24 reads the first and last by Jupiter and the middle two by Saturn.
- Is Rahu strong in Ardra?
- By BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 Gemini is Rahu's Mooltrikona, so a Rahu in Ardra is in Mooltrikona; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (Ch. III, p. 82) calls Gemini an exaltation sign of Rahu. The engine gives Rahu no dignity at all and reads it as neutral.
- When is the Sun in Ardra?
- Once a year for about two weeks. The engine's sidereal Sun for 2026 enters Ardra on 22 June and Punarvasu on 6 July.
- How long is the Rahu dasha at birth for an Ardra Moon?
- Up to 18 years: 18 times the share of Ardra still ahead of the Moon. 5 degrees in leaves 11.25 years.
