Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Mars in the 1st house: Saravali's and the Bhrigu Sutras' readings, BPHS Ch. 12 on a malefic in the Lagna, Ruchaka Yoga and Mangal Dosha from the same placement, the aspects on the 4th, 7th and 8th, both of Mars's lordships by rising sign, and how this app grades it.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

BPHS calls Mars one's strength and the army chief of the planetary cabinet, and in Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 ranks it the most malefic of the natural malefics. Put that planet in the Lagna, the house of the body and of innate nature, and the texts read it in two voices at once. Saravali gives courage and adventure along with a fickle mind and an injured physique. The Bhrigu Sutras give strength, anger and valour, and a sound constitution and honours when Mars is in its own sign or exalted.

The same placement also triggers two of this app's named results that point in opposite directions: Ruchaka Yoga, when Mars is in its own or exaltation sign, and Mangal Dosha, whatever its sign. This page sets out the verses, both results, the three houses Mars aspects from here, and the two houses it rules for each rising sign. For the planet see Mars in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 1st house, Tanu Bhava.

Where these readings come from

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Saravali's and the Bhrigu Sutras' 1st-house verses are mostly about the body and temperament; those phrases are what a text says, not medical advice, and not a description of anyone's character.

What Mars brings into the house of the self

BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 say what is judged from each graha: from Mars, co-borns, strength, qualities and land. Ch. 32 fills in the family roles: Mars indicates a sister, a brother-in-law and a younger brother; the stronger of the Moon and Mars indicates the mother; and Mars is the fixed significator of two houses, the 3rd and the 6th. BPHS Ch. 3 makes it male, fiery, Tamasic and strong in the South and at night, and Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 say "Mangal is one's strength".

The 1st house reads the person: BPHS Ch. 32 says Tanu Bhava denotes the soul, the self, and gives the Sun as its fixed significator. With Mars there, the planet of strength sits in the house of vigour and weakness, which Ch. 11 Sl. 2 lists together. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (Note, p. 47) faults the other texts for describing only a malefic Mars and not the Mars that becomes a functional benefic by sign or by lordship. The 1st is the house where that question is sharpest, because the Lagna lord is specially auspicious by Ch. 34 and Mars is the Lagna lord for two Ascendants.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 26

"If Mars occupies the Ascendant, the native will be cruel, adventurous, dull-witted, short-lived, honourable, courageous, will have an injured physique, be attractive in appearance and fickle-minded" (Sl. 26, p. 102). Saravali states its purpose for the chapter in Sl. 1: the effects of planets in the houses are explained so that "physique etc." can be understood, and its 1st-house verses are accordingly about body and temperament.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 1-9

The sutras (p. 46) give wound marks or the marks of boils, a stout body, a stealing habit, a big navel and reddish hands; cruel, strong, stupid, angry, extraordinarily valorous, wealthy and unstable, with peculiar diseases and mental troubles, and a wicked disposition. In its own sign or exalted: healthy, a strong constitution, honours from government and a long life. Joined with a malefic or an enemy planet: short-lived, few children, an ugly appearance and rheumatic pains. Exalted in the Lagna: wealthy and fond of sightseeing. With a malefic or in an enemy sign: eye diseases. These are the text's statements, not forecasts or medical advice. The commentator's Note (p. 47) faults the other texts for describing only a malefic Mars, and across the houses the sutras make the reading conditional: own sign, exaltation or benefic influence turns most houses round.

A malefic in the Lagna: BPHS Ch. 12

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 2 reads physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, weakness, happiness, grief and innate nature from the Lagna. Ch. 12, the house's own chapter, has two verses about occupants and aspects. Sl. 3: bodily health suffers if the Lagna or the Moon is aspected by or joined with a malefic while having no benefic aspect. Sl. 4: a benefic in the Lagna gives a pleasing appearance and a malefic takes it away; the body is comfortable if the Lagna is aspected by or joined with a benefic.

Mars is a natural malefic (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11), so a Mars in the Lagna is the "malefic joined with the Lagna" of Sl. 3, and the second half of that sentence is the important part: a benefic aspect alongside it is a different case. The benefics that can aspect the 1st are any benefic in the 7th, and Jupiter from the 5th or 9th by its special aspects. Ch. 27 Sl. 30-31 deduct one Rupa of strength from any house Mars occupies.

BPHS Ch. 34 then undoes the label for the Lagna lord. "The Lord of Lagn is specially auspicious, as Lagn is a Kendr, as well as a Kon." For Aries and Scorpio rising, Mars in the 1st is the Lagna lord at home, and Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 read a Lagna lord in an angle as bodily comfort at all times. The malefic in the Lagna and the Lagna lord in the Lagna are then the same planet, and the texts read the second more kindly than the first.

Ruchaka Yoga and Mangal Dosha from one placement

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Ruchaka Yoga when Mars is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle from the Lagna; this app keeps only the temperament line, "energetic and decisive, drawn to challenge, leads through courage and directness". In the 1st, that means Aries rising (Mars in Aries), Scorpio rising (Mars in Scorpio) or Capricorn rising (Mars exalted). In 20,000 random births sampled for this app's Mars reference page, 7.5 per cent had Ruchaka. The yogas calculator lists it when present.

BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47, on women's charts, reads Mars in the 12th, 4th, 7th or 8th from the Lagna, with no benefic aspecting or joining it, as bereavement in marriage; Sl. 48-49 apply it to a man equally and let it lapse when both partners have it. The 1st is not in BPHS's list. This app's Mangal Dosha check is broader: six houses (1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12), no benefic exception, graded Mild in the 1st, and worded "friction in partnership timing, not a fixed outcome". The same sample counted it in 49.7 per cent of charts. The Mangal Dosha calculator shows the row and Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not covers the rule.

The awkward fact: three of Ruchaka's four angles, the 1st, 4th and 7th, are also Mangal Dosha houses, and 76.7 per cent of the Ruchaka charts in that sample also carried the dosha. A Mars in the 1st in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn always does: the same planet is a great-person yoga and a dosha in the same report. The 1st-house case rests on the engine's six-house rule, since BPHS Ch. 80 does not name the 1st.

Three houses under Mars's aspect

BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give Mars special full aspects on the 4th and 8th places from itself, in addition to the 7th that every planet has. From the 1st, aspectedHouses('mars', 1) returns [7, 4, 8]: the house of partnership, the house of home and mother, and the house of longevity. The engine counts each as a malefic aspect, lowering the Shad Bala of any planet in those houses.

None of the three texts gives a separate verse for Mars aspecting these houses from the Lagna, so this page states none. Two of the three are houses where the texts treat Mars itself harshly as an occupant: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 32 and the Bhrigu Sutras (Sutras 54-65) read Mars in the 7th as loss of the wife, and Sutras 26-33 read Mars in the 4th as domestic disturbances. See the 7th house, the 4th house and the 8th house.

Two lordships for every rising sign

Mars owns Aries and Scorpio, so it rules two houses in every chart, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 give Mars's role for each Ascendant. Mars is in the 1st when it occupies your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 1st, so a Mars in the Lagna carries two of them.

Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 say a planet that rules two houses gives the results of both, scaled by strength. Ch. 34 Sl. 15 adds: an angle or trine lord that also owns an evil house does not cause a Raj Yoga by relationship alone, the caution behind Sagittarius and Capricorn rising.

Rows that pull apart

  • Cancer rising: Mars is debilitated in the Lagna, its weakest dignity, and is the Yoga Karaka for this Ascendant (5th and 10th lord), which Ch. 34 says can confer a full Yoga by itself. Ch. 24 Sl. 49 and 109 are both warm. Strength scales them.
  • Capricorn rising: Mars is exalted in the Lagna and forms Ruchaka; Ch. 34 calls it a malefic and a Maraka with other malefics, as 4th and 11th lord.
  • Aries rising: Mars is the Lagna lord at home and the 8th lord; Ch. 34 says it is helpful to auspicious grahas despite the 8th. Ch. 24 gives one warm verse (Sl. 1) and one hard one (Sl. 85) for the same planet.
  • Leo rising: Mars rules the 4th and 9th, an angle and a trine. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 say only "auspicious" for Leo, while the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (Note, p. 47) calls Mars a "yoga karaka par excellence" for Cancer and Leo alike.

Mars's sign is your rising sign: Saravali Ch. 25

Because Mars in the 1st sits in the rising sign, Saravali's chapter on Mars by sign reads straight onto the Ascendant. The chapter is blunt and written for another century; its base verse for each sign (pp. 76-78) is reported here as the record, harsh clauses included as the text's statements.

Ascendant (Mars in)Saravali Ch. 25
AriesSl. 1-2: splendourous, truthful, valorous, a king, fond of war and adventure; an Army chief or head of a village; charitable, fierce, joins many women
TaurusSl. 3-4: breaks the vows of chaste women, eats voraciously, little wealth and few sons, jealous, distrustful, very harsh speech, fond of music, sinful, brings infamy to his family
GeminiSl. 5-6: splendourous, enduring miseries, very learned, skilled in fine arts, fond of foreign travel, highly intelligent
CancerSl. 7-8: lives in others' houses, deformed, sick; riches through agriculture and water; repeatedly anguished and always distressed
LeoSl. 9-10: impatient, valorous, grabs others' money, lives in forests, loses his first wife, bereft of children, always active in his jobs
VirgoSl. 11-12: worthy of honour, never rich, soft-spoken, not much valorous, fears enemies, learned in Shastras and fine arts
LibraSl. 13-14: a wanderer, bad business, an able speaker, fortunate, a deformed limb, few relatives, loses his first wife, deals in liquors, earns only to lose
ScorpioSl. 15-16: attached to trade, Vedic knowledge, leader of thieves, skilful, highly sinful, perfidious, a talebearer; lands, sons and wife; troubled by poison, fire, weapons and wounds
SagittariusSl. 17-18: many wounds, emaciated, harsh in speech, crafty, a warrior, happy with hard work, loses happiness and money through anger
CapricornSl. 19-20: wealthy, happy, famous, an Army chief or a king, a good wife, successful in war, independent, a protector, virtuous
AquariusSl. 21-22: devoid of affection and purity, looks old, "will die a bad death", untruthful, afflicted speech, lost wealth, loses money in gambling, unfortunate
PiscesSl. 23-24: troubled by diseases, lives abroad, insulted by relatives, loses wealth by cunning, depressed, very miserable, yet famous
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 1-24 (saravali.txt 3686-3753, pp. 76-78). Harsh, bodily and death clauses are the text's statements, not forecasts or medical advice.

The chapter does not always agree with the dignity table: Capricorn and Aries get Saravali's best readings and Cancer a troubled one, as dignity would suggest, but Gemini, an enemy's sign, gets one of the kindest, and Scorpio, Mars's own sign, comes with some of the chapter's harshest lines. Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 25-66 also read the aspect each planet casts on Mars; Jupiter's is the steadiest, and Saturn's is not uniformly bad. With Mars in the Lagna, an aspect on Mars is an aspect on the Lagna, which brings BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3-4 back into play.

Two more Ch. 12 verses involve the Lagna lord, and so a Mars in the 1st for Aries or Scorpio rising. Sl. 5-7: the Lagna lord in an angle or trine gives wealth, intelligence and regard from those in authority, and a Lagna lord in a movable sign aspected by a benefic gives fame, wealth and bodily comfort; Aries is a movable sign. BPHS Ch. 10 Sl. 4, among the features that offset early difficulty, says the Lagna lord alone can ward off evils if strongly placed in an angle.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mars's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 1st is an angle, so dignity alone decides. Lordship, aspects, company and combustion are not part of the test.

Mars's natural relations in the engine: Jupiter, the Moon and the Sun friends, Mercury an enemy, Venus and Saturn neutral. The temporary half comes from the chart: the sign lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from Mars is a temporary friend. With Mars in the 1st, the sign lord is the Lagna lord and "signs from Mars" are houses. In the code read for this page dignityOf() is given the chart, so:

  • Always favourable: Aries, Scorpio and Capricorn rising.
  • Never favourable: Cancer rising (debilitated), and Gemini and Virgo rising, where Mercury's natural enmity means the best result is Neutral.
  • Favourable when the Lagna lord sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th house: Leo, Sagittarius and Pisces rising (otherwise Neutral), and Taurus, Libra and Aquarius rising (otherwise Enemy sign).

dashaQuality() is stricter: good only for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign; challenging for debilitated, enemy sign or a dusthana; neutral otherwise. The Mars Mahadasha page covers what that grade feeds.

Strength: direction, combustion and the Rupa

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures Mars, like the Sun, from the 4th house: no directional strength at the nadir, full at the 10th. The 1st is three houses from each, and this engine's even steps give Mars 2 of its 4 directional points there. As an angle, the 1st gives full Kendradi Bal. BPHS Ch. 27 (bphs.txt 2380-2435) adds other conditions: strong at night, in the dark fortnight as a malefic, and when retrograde; second lowest in natural strength. The Shad Bala calculator shows the engine's 20-point version.

Combustion matters for Mars in the 1st whenever the Sun is rising too. The engine flags Mars combust within 17 degrees of the Sun and sets its position score to zero; Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 say a combust planet other than Venus or Saturn loses all its rays. The app's ephemeris sample counts Mars combust on 15.7 per cent of days from 1950 to 2049. An exalted, combust Mars in the Lagna therefore prints the favourable house line and Ruchaka Yoga beside a weak Shad Bala, as the worked chart below shows.

Timing

Mars has 7 of Vimshottari's 120 years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 27-32: when Mars is exalted, in Moolatrikona or its own sign, in an angle, the 11th or the 2nd with strength, and joined by a benefic, its dasha brings position, wealth and land, recognition by government and good relations with co-borns; a strong Mars in an angle or the 3rd brings wealth won by courage, with some unfavourable effects possible at the end. Sl. 33 gives a weak Mars loss of wealth and distress. A Mars in the 1st meets the angle condition by position, and Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 count a dasha lord in the Lagna as favourable. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.

For Aries and Scorpio rising Mars is also the Lagna lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 opens with "physical well-being in the Dasha of the Lord of Lagn"; this app shows "physical vitality and personal growth". The app names both houses Mars rules with their themes. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time results by decanate (early, middle or late in the period), reversed if Mars was retrograde at birth. Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts Mars from your natal Moon, not from this house.

Everything that reads dignity is favourable: exalted Mars in an angle gives the favourable house line, a "good" dasha grade and Ruchaka Yoga. Everything that reads strength is not: Mars is 15.7 degrees from the Sun, inside the 17-degree orb, so its position score is zero, and the engine's strength reason lists "combust (too close to the Sun)" and "aspected by Ketu". The Shad Bala total is 3.25 of 20, labelled Weak. The same report also shows Mangal Dosha for the same Mars.

What the texts add. With Capricorn rising Mars rules the 4th and 11th: Ch. 24 Sl. 37 and Sl. 121, and Ch. 34's malefic. Mars aspects the 4th (Aries, with the Moon), the 7th (Cancer, with Ketu) and the 8th (Leo, with Saturn, the Lagna lord). For BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3 the Lagna is joined by malefics (Mars, the Sun, Rahu) and holds a benefic, Jupiter, debilitated and combust; no benefic aspects Capricorn on this whole-sign count. The page lists these and does not net them.

Saravali Ch. 15 reads Mars joined to other planets: with the Sun, splendourous, valorous, dull-witted, strong, a liar, sinful and fierce (Sl. 3); with Jupiter, an artisan, a Vedic expert, intelligent and expert in speech (Sl. 14). Both apply to this chart's Lagna. Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 19-20 give Mars in Capricorn one of its best sign verses. By the engine's Vimshottari timeline the chart opens in a Venus period; Mars at 4.79 degrees is in the first ten degrees of its sign, which by Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results early in the Mars period.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Mars is in your rising sign in the birth chart calculator, and note its retrograde and combust flags.
  2. Find its dignity: Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn strong; Cancer weak; Gemini and Virgo never better than Neutral.
  3. Read both houses it rules in the Ch. 24 table, and its Ch. 34 role.
  4. Check for a benefic aspect on the Lagna, which BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3 asks for.
  5. Look up Ruchaka and Mangal Dosha in the yogas and dosha lists, and read them together.
  6. Note what Mars aspects: your 4th, 7th and 8th houses.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

Over-readings

  • "Mars in the 1st makes a person aggressive." Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras name anger and courage; both are classical classifications, and the sutras reverse much of it in own sign or exaltation.
  • "Mangal Dosha from the 1st is serious." BPHS Ch. 80 does not list the 1st; the engine's six-house rule does, and grades it Mild.
  • "Ruchaka means Mars is strong." It means Mars is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle; combustion can still leave it weak in Shad Bala.
  • "A malefic in the Lagna harms the body." BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 3 needs the absence of a benefic aspect, and Ch. 34 calls the Lagna lord specially auspicious.
  • "Mars in the 1st from my Moon in transit is my 1st house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about Mars in the 1st

Is Mars in the 1st house good?
The texts give two voices: courage and adventure, with anger, fickleness and bodily trouble. The Bhrigu Sutras give a sound constitution and honours when Mars is in its own sign or exalted.
Does Mars in the 1st cause Mangal Dosha?
In this app, yes, graded Mild; its rule covers six houses. BPHS Ch. 80 names the 12th, 4th, 7th and 8th only, exempts a Mars with a benefic's aspect or company, and ends the rule when both partners have it.
When does Mars in the 1st form Ruchaka Yoga?
When it is in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn, that is, for Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn rising (BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2).
What does Mars aspect from the 1st?
The 4th, 7th and 8th houses, by its 7th-sign aspect and its special aspects (BPHS Ch. 26). The engine counts all three as malefic aspects.
Which rising sign gives the strongest Mars in the 1st?
By dignity, Capricorn (exalted), Aries and Scorpio (own). By lordship, Cancer rising makes Mars the Yoga Karaka, though debilitated; Leo and Pisces rising make it a trine lord.
Why is my Mars in the 1st marked favourable but weak?
The house line reads dignity only; Shad Bala adds combustion, aspects, direction and time. A combust Mars scores zero for position in this engine.
When does a Mars in the 1st show its results?
Classically in Mars's seven-year Mahadasha and its sub-periods. BPHS Ch. 47 counts a strong Mars in an angle among the conditions for a good Mars dasha.
