In one sentence: a Saturn in the 6th gets the app's testing sentence even in its own sign, although the 6th is one of the houses the texts read best for it. Saravali gives Saturn here courage and many enemies conquered. The Bhrigu Sutras give destruction of enemies, and their commentator adds that Saturn in this Upachaya gives benefic results for finances. The app's own favourable line for the house calls it "classically one of Saturn's best placements". And the engine never prints that line, because the 6th is also a Dusthana.
This page sets out why both statements are true and what each one is measuring. It is a map of rules, not a forecast, and nothing on it is medical advice. For the planet, see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 6th house, Ari Bhava.
A note on sources
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. BPHS Ch. 17, the 6th house's chapter, names diseases and ages, which are not repeated.
The house: enemies, illness and three labels
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 7 list the 6th as the maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers and the step-mother, and Ch. 17 open with diseases and ulcers. Saravali Ch. 3 names it Ari, enemy, and Vrana, wound. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list gives the modern one: sickness, service, employees, debts and litigation among them. BPHS Ch. 32 name Mars the 6th house's fixed significator.
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 6th an Apoklima, a Dusthana and an Upachaya at once, and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 call the three Dusthanas Trikas whose association "will inflict evils". The two main labels pull in opposite directions and the texts do not reconcile them; the Bhrigu commentator notices the same thing under Mars in the 6th (p. 53): the 6th, "while being an Upachaya house is also a Dusthana", and the Sutras "have apparently not taken this into account". For a natural malefic such as Saturn, the Upachaya label is the one the planet-by-house verses follow.
What the texts say about Saturn in the 6th
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 79
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 79 (p. 105): "very licentious, be beautiful, courageous, will eat abundantly, be crooked and will conquer many of his enemies". With the 3rd (Sl. 76) it is one of the two Saturn-in-house verses Saravali gives warmly, and there is a pattern across the chapter: in Saravali's 6th-house verses the three natural malefics, the Sun, Mars and Saturn, get the best readings, strength, affluence, command and enemies conquered, while the benefics get the worst. That is the Upachaya principle at work without anyone naming it.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 27-31
Sutras 27-31 (Bhrigu Sutras pp. 103-104, corpus line 4103): little learning, destruction of enemies, and full financial and agricultural prosperity; with Mars, wide travel and a moderate Raja Yoga; as lord of the 8th in the 6th, a reduction of longevity, rheumatism, shooting pains and marks of injury (named as the text's, not a forecast). Of the authorities quoted (p. 104), Phaldeepika and Saravali give a big eater, wealthy or courageous and conquering enemies, Chamatkar Chintamani a vanquisher of enemies with cattle, and Brihat Jatak a powerful person overpowered by enemies. The commentator states the reasoning for Saturn directly: "the sixth is an upachaya house; Saturn in this house will give benefic results in regard to finances". He adds that Saturn here as lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th gives "extremely favourable results", and as lord of an auspicious house harms it. The two sources agree on the enemies and part on learning only by omission; Saravali does not mention it.
This app wrote its lines from that chapter. Favourable: "exceptional resilience against obstacles, debt and rivals - classically one of Saturn's best placements as a natural malefic in an upachaya house". Testing: "grinding, prolonged struggle before real relief". The favourable line is the Upachaya idea in the engine's own strings.
| Source | What it says about Saturn in the 6th | Condition stated |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 79 | Very licentious, good-looking, courageous, a big eater, crooked, conquers many enemies | None |
| Bhrigu Sutras 27-31 | Little learning; destruction of enemies; financial and agricultural prosperity | With Mars: wide travel, a moderate Raja Yoga; as 8th lord: ill health |
| Bhrigu commentary | Benefic results for finances | The 6th as an Upachaya |
| BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 | Association with a Trika inflicts evils | General rule |
| BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 | An adverse Saturn period | Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th; escape with a benefic, an angle or trine, or Jupiter's signs |
| This app (phSaturn6U) | "grinding, prolonged struggle before real relief" | Always printed: the 6th is a dusthana |
Why the app always prints the testing line
The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable line only when it has strong dignity and sits outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. For every Saturn in the 6th the second condition fails. In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,179 had Saturn in the 6th, and every one printed the testing line. The favourable line, the one that calls this a classically strong placement, sits in the app's strings and is never shown.
The engine's position is plain: this is the one place where it sides fully with the Dusthana label over the Upachaya one, and Saturn in the 6th gets a favourable planet-in-house theme and an unfavourable test at the same time. The dasha side agrees with the test: buildDashaLordEffects() reads a Saturn period from the 6th as unfavourable and dashaQuality() grades it challenging, which they did for all 10,179 charts. That follows BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 and Sl. 57-60 exactly.
What the sample shows is how often the house rule overrides a dignified Saturn: it was in its own sign in 12.3 per cent of those charts, exalted in 10.0, in Moolatrikona in 5.9 and in a friendly sign in 20.1. Nearly half of 6th-house Saturns would print the favourable line in any non-dusthana house.
The Upachaya side, counted
Two measures in this app do follow the Upachaya side. The first is strength. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 give Saturn its full directional strength in the 7th; the 6th is next to it, worth 3.33 of 4. In the engine's strength run, a Saturn in the 6th averaged 10.18 of 20 and was Strong in 24.2 per cent of charts, second only to the 7th. The Shad Bala calculator shows each component.
The second is Saturn's own Ashtakavarga. BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 59-60 (8958) give Saturn a point from "all except Surya" in the 6th place counted from each, seven of eight, and "all" in the 11th, so the 6th and 11th places collect 15 of Saturn's 39 points. Saturn itself gives points only from the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 11th. The table expresses the same preference for growing houses that the planet-by-house verses do. The Ashtakavarga calculator returns Saturn's table house by house.
The third follows transits. The Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and marks Saturn in the 6th from the Moon favourable, "steady, disciplined progress", and Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 310) agrees on the 3rd, 6th and 11th. That is a statement about the 6th sign from the Moon, not a natal Saturn in the 6th house.
Vipareeta Raja Yoga: when Saturn rules a Trika
The engine has one rule that reads a planet in the 6th as a gain. Its Yogas calculator reports Harsha, Sarala or Vimala when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in any of those houses. The sourcing is narrow: a modern case-study book, Advanced Predictive Astrology, which uses the yoga without a numbered definition; the Bhrigu commentator's Uttara Kalamrita citation (under Jupiter in the 12th, p. 86); and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 66, which give the 6th lord in the 6th only a mild reading.
Saturn rules a Trika for six Lagnas, and a Saturn in the 6th forms one of the three yogas for each: Harsha for Leo and Virgo rising, where Saturn rules the 6th itself; Sarala for Gemini and Cancer rising, where it rules the 8th; Vimala for Aquarius and Pisces rising, where it rules the 12th. For Leo and Virgo the Saturn in the 6th is in its own sign, the strongest dignity it can have there, and is the 6th lord at home. The Bhrigu commentator, under Saturn in the 6th and the 12th (pp. 104, 108), states the general principle that a Saturn placed in a Trika as lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th is very beneficial.
Your rising sign: Saturn's sign and the houses it rules
With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 6th is in the sixth sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 6th, and the Trika rule shows most clearly there: the lords of other houses lose something when they come here.
| Ascendant | Saturn in | Natural dignity | Saturn rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 6th | Engine yoga |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 10th and 11th | Sl. 114: skilful yet short of wealth, troubled by enemies; Sl. 126: illness, living in foreign places | - |
| Taurus | Libra | Exalted | 9th and 10th | Sl. 102: meagre prosperity, troubled by enemies; Sl. 114: lacking paternal happiness | - |
| Gemini | Scorpio | Enemy (Mars) | 8th and 9th | Sl. 90: wins over enemies; Sl. 102: meagre prosperity | Sarala |
| Cancer | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 7th and 8th | Sl. 78: friction with the spouse; Sl. 90: wins over enemies | Sarala |
| Leo | Capricorn | Own sign | 6th and 7th | Sl. 66: enmity with kin, friendly to others; Sl. 78: friction with the spouse | Harsha |
| Virgo | Aquarius | Moolatrikona to 20 deg; own sign after | 5th and 6th | Sl. 54: children like opponents; Sl. 66: mediocre happiness | Harsha |
| Libra | Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 4th and 5th | Sl. 42: lacking maternal happiness, independent; Sl. 54: children like opponents | - |
| Scorpio | Aries | Debilitated | 3rd and 4th | Sl. 30: at odds with siblings, affluent; Sl. 42: lacking maternal happiness | - |
| Sagittarius | Taurus | Friendly (Venus) | 2nd and 3rd | Sl. 18: gain or loss through enemies by company; Sl. 30: affluent | - |
| Capricorn | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 1st and 2nd | Sl. 6: trouble from enemies only with a malefic and no benefic aspect; Sl. 18: gain through enemies with a benefic | - |
| Aquarius | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 12th and 1st | Sl. 138: enmity with own people; Sl. 6: conditional | Vimala |
| Pisces | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 11th and 12th | Sl. 126: troubled by enemies; Sl. 138: enmity with own people | Vimala |
Two conditional slokas are the useful ones, and both touch Saturn. Sl. 6 apply to the Lagna lord in the 6th only if it is related to a malefic and has no benefic aspect; Saturn is the Lagna lord for Capricorn and Aquarius rising, and is itself a malefic, so the question becomes what else touches it. Sl. 18 turn the 2nd lord in the 6th on company: gain through enemies with a benefic, loss with a malefic; that is Saturn for Sagittarius and Capricorn rising. Sl. 90, the 8th lord in the 6th winning over enemies, applies for Gemini and Cancer rising, one of BPHS's nearest equivalents to the Bhrigu inversion, in which a weakened 6th is a relief.
Taurus rising is the costly row on lordship. Saturn is the Yoga Karaka there, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24's Raja Yoga planet, and exalted in Libra in the 6th; Ch. 24 Sl. 102 and Sl. 114 then read the 9th and 10th lords in the 6th as meagre prosperity and lacking paternal happiness. The Bhrigu commentator's warning (under Saturn in the 6th, p. 104), that a planet in a Dusthana as lord of an auspicious house damages that house, would apply here.
Capricorn and Aquarius rising, and two named combinations
For these two Lagnas Saturn is the Lagna lord in the 6th. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 5-6 read the Lagna lord with a malefic in a Trika while the 2nd lord is weak, or the Lagna lord joined to a Trika lord with no benefic aspect, among the combinations for penury. Saturn is itself a malefic, and for Aquarius rising it is also the 12th lord, which raises the same question the Venus-in-the-6th page raises for Taurus rising: whether a rule about the Lagna lord joined to a Trika lord applies to one planet holding both roles. The sloka does not settle it. The general remark stands: each of these rules needs two or three conditions at once, and none is triggered by one planet in the 6th.
One BPHS yoga needs the 6th lord as a positive ingredient. Shankh Yog, Ch. 36 Sl. 13-14, forms when the Lagna lord is strong and the lords of the 5th and 6th are in mutual angles, read as wealth, spouse and children, a kindly and intelligent nature and long life. For Leo rising Saturn is the 6th lord, so a Saturn in the 6th needs Jupiter, the 5th lord, in an angle from it. For Virgo rising Saturn rules both the 5th and the 6th, and the yoga's two lords are one planet, a case the sloka does not address.
Saturn's three aspects from the 6th
Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th places from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). From the 6th those fall on the 8th, the 12th and the 3rd: the other two Trikas and the other short-range Upachaya. The engine returns those three. In its Shad Bala each is a malefic aspect on any planet there. The texts cited here state no separate result for these aspects from the 6th. For the 12th, see the 12th house.
Wealth rules and the dignity label
Two wealth rules count benefics, not malefics, in the Upachayas: BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6 from the Moon and Saravali's Dhana Yoga (Ch. 13 Sl. 32) from the Lagna or the Moon. A Saturn in the 6th does not count toward either. Its financial reading comes instead from the Bhrigu commentator's Upachaya remark. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 13 add a caution for the dasha of any planet associated with a Trika lord without a trine lord's aspect.
The house line ignores Saturn's dignity in the 6th, but the strength panel uses it. For other signs than its own, exaltation or fall, the engine combines Saturn's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation from your chart. Strong regardless: Leo and Virgo rising (own sign, Moolatrikona) and Taurus rising (exalted). Debilitated: Scorpio rising. Friendly or Neutral by Mercury or Venus: Aries, Sagittarius and Capricorn rising. Friendly or Enemy by Jupiter: Cancer and Libra rising. At best Neutral: Gemini, Aquarius and Pisces rising.
Saravali Ch. 45 describes Saturn by dignity: exalted, royal assignments; in Moolatrikona, of good family, wealthy and valorous; in its own sign, honourable and happy; debilitated, adversity; in an enemy's sign, dirty and distressed; in a friend's sign, depending on others for food. Its Ch. 29 by sign gives, for the strongest 6th-house cases: Capricorn (Leo rising), learned, honourable, famous, courageous; Libra (Taurus rising), rich, honours from abroad; Aquarius (Virgo rising), eminent but "a great liar" and very ill-tempered. Courage appears in both the Capricorn sign verse and the 6th-house verse, by separate routes.
Timing: the Saturn period and its releases
The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15), and a Moon in Pushya, Anuradha or Uttara Bhadrapada begins life in it. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 describe the period of a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th as adverse, and then give the escape clause: a Saturn joined or aspected by a benefic, in an angle or trine, or in Sagittarius or Pisces gives position and comforts instead. For this house the clause turns on a benefic's contact or on Jupiter's signs, which a Saturn in the 6th occupies for Cancer and Libra rising. The Saturn Mahadasha page adds Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17: the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord becomes favourable when associated with a trine lord.
Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 add that the dashas of grahas placed in the 3rd, 6th and 11th prove unfavourable. The engine applies neither the escape clause nor the trine-lord release, so its verdict for every Saturn in the 6th is challenging. When Saturn rules your 6th, for Leo and Virgo rising, the app adds the 6th lord's theme, "friction with rivals or health matters needing attention". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
A worked chart
The figures below are this app's engine output for a birth at 14:41 IST on 10 April 2021 in New Delhi. The chart was chosen because its Saturn period starts at birth. It is not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Leo 4.17 deg |
| Saturn | Capricorn 17.97 deg (Shravana), 6th house, own sign, direct |
| Moon | Pisces 7.37 deg (Uttara Bhadrapada), 8th house, with the Sun and Mercury |
| Jupiter | Aquarius 0.54 deg, 7th house |
| Mars / Venus | Taurus, 10th house / Aries, 9th house (an exchange) |
| House line | Testing: "grinding, prolonged struggle before real relief" |
| Dasha verdict / quality | Testing / challenging |
| Yogas naming Saturn | Harsha Yoga (the 6th lord in the 6th) |
| Strength | 12.96 of 20, Medium: position 7.5, direction 3.33 |
| Running Mahadasha at birth | Saturn, to 7 Jul 2034 |
For Leo rising Saturn rules the 6th and 7th, so it is the 6th lord in its own sign in the 6th: Harsha Yoga, and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 66, enmity with kin but friendliness to others, middling happiness. Ch. 24 Sl. 78 add the 7th lord's line, friction with the spouse. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 list Saturn as a malefic and a maraka by association for Leo. The engine prints the testing house line in spite of the own sign, and Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras would read the same Saturn as conquering enemies.
The Moon in Uttara Bhadrapada starts life in Saturn's own Mahadasha, running to July 2034, so the "challenging" dasha verdict here describes the first thirteen years. The Ch. 47 escape clause would need a benefic touching Saturn: Jupiter in the 7th aspects the 11th, 3rd and 1st, not the 6th, and the engine records no aspect on Saturn. Saturn at 17.67 degrees is in its middle decanate, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the middle of its period.
A second chart: the Yoga Karaka in the 6th
For the Taurus case, the engine's output for 16:37 IST on 1 December 2012 in New Delhi puts a Taurus Ascendant at 4.19 degrees and Saturn at 12.58 degrees of Libra in the 6th, exalted, with Venus (Libra 17.63, its own sign) and Mercury beside it. Saturn scores 15.46 of 20, Strong. The house line is testing and the dasha quality challenging, as for every Saturn in the 6th. The yoga list holds Harsha, for Venus, the 6th lord in the 6th, and a Raja Yoga and a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga.
Here BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60's escape clause is met by the letter: Saturn is joined by a benefic, Venus, which the clause says turns the adverse period into one of position and comforts. The engine does not apply it, so the period, which by its timeline runs from age 21 to 40, is graded challenging. On lordship the chart carries the cost described above: the Taurus Yoga Karaka, ruler of the 9th and 10th, sits in a Trika, and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 102 and Sl. 114 read those lords there as meagre prosperity and little paternal happiness. Both readings are in BPHS. The app shows neither the escape nor the cost, only the house rule.
Saturn with Mars: two sources, two verdicts
The Bhrigu Sutras single out one companion for Saturn in the 6th: with Mars, the person travels widely and has a moderate Raja Yoga. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 16 read Saturn and Mars together in any house as a metallurgist, clever with illusion and quarrelsome, one of the chapter's hardest pairs. The two texts are answering different questions, one about the 6th house specifically and one about the pair anywhere, but they point opposite ways for the same chart. Mars is also the 6th house's fixed significator in BPHS Ch. 32, so for this house the conjunction puts the significator beside the occupant. BPHS Ch. 45 would call Mars Kshudhita for being joined with Saturn.
A strong 6th lord: the Bhrigu inversion
The Bhrigu Sutras apply one principle to this house under the Sun and Venus: a strong 6th lord means more enemies, a weak or afflicted one fewer. The commentator puts it generally: if the 6th gets strength there will be more enemies and diseases, and if it is weak there will be none. For Leo and Virgo rising Saturn is the 6th lord, in its own sign in the 6th, as strong as a 6th lord can be. By the inversion that is more enemies; by Saturn's own sutras, destruction of enemies. BPHS does not state the inversion as a rule, so two classical attitudes are on record, and Saturn as 6th lord in the 6th is where they meet head on.
Checking a Saturn in the 6th in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Saturn is in the 6th if it is in the sixth sign from your Ascendant.
- Expect the testing house line whatever Saturn's sign. Read the dignity label and Strength panel separately.
- Find what Saturn rules. If it rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala.
- Is Mars with Saturn? That is the Bhrigu Sutras' condition for wide travel and a moderate Raja Yoga.
- Is a benefic joined to or aspecting Saturn, or is Saturn in Sagittarius or Pisces? That is BPHS Ch. 47's escape clause for the period.
- Look at Saturn's own row in the Ashtakavarga calculator, where the 6th place is one of its two richest.
- Note when the Saturn periods run, and keep transits separate.
The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.
Common misreadings
- "The app says testing, so Saturn in my 6th is bad." Every Saturn in the 6th gets that line. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras read the placement as one of Saturn's best.
- "Saturn in the 6th means illness." BPHS Ch. 17 is a chapter of multi-factor combinations; no single placement in it is a diagnosis, and nothing here is medical advice.
- "A malefic in the 6th is always a Raj Yoga." The Vipareeta yogas need Saturn to rule a Trika, true for six Lagnas; for the others there is no such yoga.
- "The Saturn dasha from the 6th is always bad." BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 give an escape for a benefic's contact or Jupiter's signs, and Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 a release through a trine lord. The app applies neither.
- "Saturn transiting the 6th from my Moon is the same." That transit is counted from the Moon, and the app marks it favourable.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Saturn in the 6th house good?
- In the planet-by-house sources, yes: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 79 give courage and many enemies conquered, and the Bhrigu Sutras destruction of enemies, with benefic results for finances in the commentary. BPHS treats the 6th as a Trika and reads a Saturn period from there as adverse unless its escape clause applies.
- Why does the app show the testing line for my own-sign Saturn in the 6th?
- Its rule requires a planet to be outside the 6th, 8th and 12th before the favourable line can print. The favourable line for this house exists in the app's strings and calls it one of Saturn's best placements, but the rule never selects it.
- Does Saturn in the 6th form a Vipareeta yoga?
- When Saturn rules a Trika: Harsha for Leo and Virgo rising, Sarala for Gemini and Cancer, Vimala for Aquarius and Pisces. The engine follows a modern source for the rule.
- What does Saturn aspect from the 6th house?
- The 8th, the 12th and the 3rd houses, by its 3rd, 7th and 10th aspects.
- Is Saturn strong in the 6th?
- Directionally, fairly: the 6th is next to the 7th, where Saturn's directional strength is full, and in the engine sample a Saturn in the 6th was Strong in 24.2 per cent of charts. Its Ashtakavarga also favours the 6th place.
- When does a Saturn in the 6th show its effects?
- Classically in the Saturn Mahadasha and Antardashas. The app grades the period challenging for every Saturn in the 6th, following BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6.
- Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
- See Saturn in the 5th house and Saturn in the 7th house; for a benefic in the same house, Venus in the 6th house.
