Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Saturn in the 5th house, read hard by Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras for children; the Lajjit state; the BPHS wealth yoga this app does not detect; and how your rising sign and this app's engine change the reading.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

The 5th is a trine, one of the two houses BPHS calls auspicious by definition and specially for wealth, and its first subject in BPHS Ch. 16 is children. Saturn in it reads hard in both of this site's planet-by-house sources: Saravali gives it short happiness, few sons and friends, little intelligence and agitation; the Bhrigu Sutras give childlessness and poverty, with daughters if Saturn is in its own sign. Saturn is among the planets that read badly for children in these texts. The same texts then make lordship and dignity decide, and for two rising signs they make Saturn the most useful planet in the chart.

This page sets out those statements and follows the placement through this app's engine. It describes rules, not your family, and makes no statement about whether anyone will have children. For the planet, see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 5th house, Putra Bhava.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. BPHS Ch. 16's ages, counts and parentage verses are not used.

The house: intellect, children and authority

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 list seven things for the 5th: amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty or authority, and fall from position. Saravali Ch. 3 names the house Putra and Pratibha and ties it to Dhi, the intellect. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make it a Kon and a Panaphara; Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 call Kendras and Konas auspicious houses whose association turns even evil into good; Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say a trine lord gives auspicious results. BPHS Ch. 32 name Jupiter the house's fixed significator, so most Ch. 16 rules check Jupiter as well as the 5th lord.

Ch. 16 reads as a method in three checks: the 5th lord's house, its condition, and its link to the Lagna lord. A planet occupying the house is a fourth, smaller check. Saturn in the 5th is that fourth check. Its reputation in the house is largely a reputation for children; BPHS's own list gives the house as much to the mind and to standing.

What the texts say about Saturn in the 5th

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 78

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 78 (p. 105): "bereft of happiness, sons, friends, intelligence and kindness, be agitated and be poor". It is among the hardest of the seven 5th-house verses, and unlike Saravali's Sun in the 5th, which it calls scholarly in the same breath as it denies sons, the Saturn verse takes the intelligence too. It carries no condition.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 22-26

Sutras 22-26 (Bhrigu Sutras pp. 102-103, corpus line 4072): childless and very poor, engaged in inferior trades, adopting a daughter; in its own sign, daughters; aspected by Jupiter, two wives, one without issue and one with daughters; and, if Saturn is strong, a line on many women (named only). The commentator (p. 103) names Aries, Taurus and Libra rising as powerful Dhana yogas. Of the authorities quoted, Brihat Jatak, Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani all read it hard for children and wealth, and the Note says all agree. The own-sign clause is the passage's one turn, and it is narrow: Saturn is in its own sign in the 5th only for Virgo rising (Capricorn) and Libra rising (Aquarius). For Saturn the dignity condition changes the sex of the children in the text rather than their presence.

This app wrote two lines from that chapter, and like Saravali's Sun verse it keeps the intellect. Favourable: "disciplined intellect and hard-won creative or academic success when Saturn rules a good house here". Testing: "real delay or heaviness around children and creative expression". The favourable line attaches a lordship condition of its own; the testing line softens the source's childlessness to delay.

BPHS Ch. 16: Saturn named among the hard cases

BPHS Ch. 16, the house's own chapter, names Saturn twice. Sl. 5-7 give narrow cases built on a fallen 5th lord with Mercury, Ketu or Saturn in the 5th, where the text speaks of a single child or of children after "a great deal of ordeal". Sl. 9 speak of adoption when the 5th is owned by Saturn or Mercury and occupied or aspected by Saturn and Mandi. Both need several conditions at once: a fallen 5th lord in the first, a Saturn- or Mercury-owned 5th and Mandi in the second. Sl. 17, the general severe verse, needs three or four malefics, a fallen 5th lord and no benefic. A Saturn alone in the 5th meets none of them in full.

The Lajjit state runs through Saturn here

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 define one planetary state by this house: a planet in the 5th associated with Rahu or Ketu, or with the Sun, Saturn or Mars, is in Lajjit Avastha, "ashamed", and say a planet in that state in the 5th brings "destruction of progeny, or ... only one surviving child". Saturn is named in the definition, so a Saturn in the 5th makes every other planet sharing the house Lajjit, the 5th lord and Jupiter included when they sit there. Saturn itself is Lajjit if the Sun, Mars or a node joins it.

The same slokas add a second state for the same company: any planet joined with Saturn is Kshudhita. A benefic in the 5th with Saturn is therefore both Lajjit and Kshudhita by BPHS's own definitions. This app's engine does not compute the avasthas, so neither state appears in its output.

Your rising sign: where lordship turns it round

With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 5th is in the fifth sign from your Ascendant and rules the two adjacent houses where Capricorn and Aquarius fall. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 5th.

Learning appears in these slokas as often as children: the 10th lord in the 5th gives all kinds of learning, the 11th lord education, the 9th lord learning, and the 8th and 12th lords take away wit and learning. For Saturn that is decisive for the "disciplined intellect" reading. Aries and Taurus rising bring two learning slokas; Gemini, Cancer, Aquarius and Pisces rising bring one of the two that dull it.

Taurus and Libra rising: Saturn as Yoga Karaka in a trine

For Taurus rising Saturn rules the 9th and 10th, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 say it causes Raja Yoga; in the 5th it sits in a trine, the kind of house Ch. 32 call auspicious. Ch. 24 Sl. 101 and Sl. 113 read the 9th and 10th lords in the 5th as sons and prosperity and all kinds of learning. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 33-34 call the 5th lord "akin to a minister" and build kingdoms on the 5th and 9th lords together. For Libra rising Saturn rules the 4th and 5th, an angle and a trine, and in the 5th it is the 5th lord at home in its Moolatrikona; Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 call it auspicious for Libra, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (Saturn in the 1st, p. 98) calls it the yoga karaka.

Those two rows are the main reason the sources' hard verdict on Saturn in the 5th cannot be read flat. Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras describe the planet in the house; BPHS Ch. 34 and Ch. 24 describe what the planet is for in a given chart. For Taurus and Libra rising they point in opposite directions, and the texts leave both standing.

Virgo and Libra rising: the 5th lord at home

For these two Lagnas Saturn is the 5th lord in its own sign in the 5th, and BPHS speaks of it with two voices. Ch. 16 Sl. 16 list the 5th lord in the 5th among the supportive positions; Sl. 8 list "in Putr itself" among the difficult ones. Ch. 24 Sl. 53 settle it with a condition: progeny when the lord is related to a benefic, none when related to a malefic, and virtuous and dear to friends either way. Saturn is itself a malefic, so its own nature cannot supply the benefic relation; another planet has to. These are also the two Lagnas where the Bhrigu Sutras' own-sign clause, daughters, applies.

Capricorn and Aquarius rising: the Lagna lord in the 5th

For these two Lagnas Saturn is the Lagna lord sitting in the 5th. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 5 read that as mediocre happiness from children, the loss of the first child, honourable, given to anger and dear to the king. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 3-5 judge Raj Yogas from the Lagna lord and the 5th lord as a pair, and Sl. 6-7 call it Maha Raj Yog when the two exchange signs. For Capricorn rising a Saturn in the 5th is in Taurus, and the exchange needs Venus, the 5th lord, in Capricorn. For Aquarius rising Saturn in the 5th is in Gemini, and the exchange needs Mercury in Aquarius. In both, Saturn sits in a natural friend's sign. But with the exchange in place the friend sits in the 9th sign from Saturn, which the engine's temporary rule counts as enmity, so the fivefold result is Neutral and the engine prints the testing line. The combination BPHS name Maha Raj Yog is one the engine's dignity rule marks down. It reports the sign exchange itself as Parivarthana and does not name Maha Raj Yog.

Saturn's company in the 5th has its own readings in Saravali Ch. 15: with Jupiter, heroic, wealthy and famous, the head of an assembly, the one plainly favourable pairing; with Mars, quarrelsome, one of the chapter's hardest pairs; with Venus, a skilled worker in wood, a painter or sculptor, fond of wandering; with Mercury, debts and pride but an able poet. Sloka 23 say each result rises or falls with the vargas of the two planets. Set beside BPHS Ch. 45, a Jupiter in the 5th with Saturn is Saravali's best Saturn pairing and BPHS's Lajjit significator at once.

A BPHS wealth yoga the app does not detect

BPHS Ch. 41 opens with seven Great Affluence combinations, each built on a planet in its own sign as the 5th with named planets in the 11th. The Saturn version, Sl. 5 (4013), is Saturn in its own sign in the 5th with the Sun and Moon in the 11th, possible only for Virgo and Libra rising. This site's 5th-house and Saturn pages describe the engine as checking this family. The code read for this page does not include it: its GREAT_AFFLUENCE list has six entries, for Venus, Mercury, the Sun, Jupiter, Mars and the Moon, and none for Saturn. So the Saturn version of the yoga will not appear in the app's yoga list even when its conditions are met, and has to be checked by hand.

Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds the broader statement that the 9th and 5th lords, and planets joined with them, "are capable of bestowing wealth" in their dasha periods. For Virgo and Libra rising Saturn is the 5th lord; for Gemini and Taurus rising it is the 9th lord. In each case a Saturn in the 5th is a trine lord in a trine.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Saturn is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign; the 5th is not a dusthana. For other signs the engine combines Saturn's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation read from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Saturn is a temporary friend.

  • Always favourable: Gemini rising (exalted in Libra), Virgo and Libra rising (own sign or Moolatrikona).
  • Never favourable: Sagittarius rising, Saturn debilitated in Aries.
  • Favourable if Mercury or Venus sits well from Saturn: Taurus, Capricorn and Aquarius rising; otherwise Neutral.
  • Friendly or Enemy, decided by Jupiter: Leo and Scorpio rising.
  • At best Neutral: Aries, Cancer and Pisces rising, with Saturn in a sign of the Sun, Mars or the Moon.

In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,312 had Saturn in the 5th and 48.9 per cent printed the favourable line. The test does not look at the 5th lord, Jupiter, the Lajjit company or Saravali's benefic rule. Note that the favourable line's own wording, "when Saturn rules a good house here", is a condition the engine does not test; it prints the line on dignity alone.

Strength is middling to good. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 put Saturn's directional strength at nil in the 1st and full in the 7th; the 5th is two houses short of the 7th, worth 2.67 of 4 in the engine. In the strength run a Saturn in the 5th averaged 9.62 of 20 and was Strong in 19.0 per cent. The engine gives Saturn motional strength only in Gemini or Virgo, which for this house means Aquarius and Taurus rising. The Shad Bala calculator shows each part.

Saturn's three aspects from the 5th

Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th places from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). From the 5th those fall on the 7th, the 11th and the 2nd, and the engine returns those three. The 11th is the 5th's partner in every Ch. 41 wealth yoga, and the 2nd and 11th are the two money houses of Ch. 13, so a Saturn in the 5th looks at both wealth houses and at the house of partnership. The texts cited here state no separate result for these aspects. See the 11th house for the house of gains.

The 5th itself is aspected by whatever sits in the 11th, by Jupiter from the 1st or 9th, by Mars from the 2nd or 10th, and by Saturn from the 3rd or 8th. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 read a 5th house holding or aspected by a benefic, or falling in a benefic's sign, as indicating children, and Sl. 37 give the reverse only when the 5th is a malefic's sign occupied by strong malefics with no benefic aspect. A Saturn in the 5th is the occupant half of Sl. 37; the sign and the aspect decide the rest.

Saravali by dignity and by sign

Saravali Ch. 45 describes Saturn by dignity: exalted, royal assignments and leadership; in Moolatrikona, of good family, wealthy and valorous; in its own sign, honourable and happy; debilitated, adversity; in an enemy's sign, dirty and distressed; in a friend's sign, depending on others for food. Its Ch. 29 by sign gives, for the 5th-house cases that decide the engine outright: Libra (Gemini rising), rich, soft-spoken, a king or a scholar; Capricorn (Virgo rising), learned in scripture and many arts; Aquarius (Libra rising), eminent but "a great liar"; Aries (Sagittarius rising), worn down by hard labour.

Two of those sign verses carry learning, and Saravali's kindest Saturn sign verses, for Sagittarius and Pisces, fall in the 5th for Leo and Scorpio rising: skilled in teaching and known for good children, and first among relatives with growing wealth. The Sagittarius verse's "good children" sits directly against the house verse's "short of sons". Saravali does not rank its chapters.

Timing

The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 describe the period of a strong Saturn as recognition, success in education, a high position, property and children; Sl. 57-60 the reverse for a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated or combust, with an escape for a Saturn in an angle or trine, joined or aspected by a benefic, or in Sagittarius or Pisces. The 5th is a trine, so a Saturn here meets the escape clause by position. Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 5th lord's period "progress in educational sphere and happiness from the children", which the app shows when Saturn rules your 5th. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and reads Saturn in the 5th from the Moon as neutral; this site's 5th-house page notes the engine's source gives no malefic rule for that position, so the app does not invent one.

Why Friendly sign: Virgo belongs to Mercury, a natural friend of Saturn, and Mercury in Leo is the 12th sign from Virgo, a temporary-friend position, so the result is Great Friend. The Dharma-Karmadhipati flag needs a word. The engine raises it when the 9th and 10th lords occupy the same house and that house is an angle or trine. For Taurus rising one planet, Saturn, is both lords, so the two are always in the same house, and the flag appears whenever Saturn sits in an angle or trine. It is BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13's Yoga Karaka in the engine's terms, not a separate conjunction.

Read by the classical conditions, the chart is mixed. Saturn is the Taurus Yoga Karaka in a trine, Strong, with Jupiter's aspect from the 11th; Ch. 24 Sl. 101 and Sl. 113 apply. But Mars and Venus share the 5th with Saturn, so by BPHS Ch. 45 Saturn is Lajjit for Mars's company and Venus, the Lagna lord and debilitated, is Lajjit and Kshudhita. The 5th lord, Mercury, sits in the 4th, an angle, which Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 count as support. The Saturn Mahadasha runs from age 21 to 40, and Saturn at 8.22 degrees is in its first decanate, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the early years of the period.

Checking a Saturn in the 5th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Saturn is in the 5th if it is in the fifth sign from your Ascendant.
  2. Find Saturn's dignity and the two houses it rules. Are you Taurus or Libra rising, where Saturn is the most useful planet?
  3. Find your 5th lord and Lagna lord: in their own signs, an angle or a trine (Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3), or in the 6th, 8th or 12th?
  4. What shares the 5th with Saturn? Each is Lajjit and Kshudhita by BPHS Ch. 45, which the app does not compute.
  5. Where is Jupiter, the 5th house's significator? Does a benefic aspect the 5th (Saravali Ch. 34)?
  6. For Virgo or Libra rising, are the Sun and Moon in the 11th (BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 5)? The app will not flag it.
  7. Check the Saptamsa (D7), which BPHS Ch. 7 assign to children and which needs an accurate birth time, and note when the Saturn periods run.

The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.

Common misreadings

  • "Saturn in the 5th means no children." Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras lean that way, but BPHS Ch. 16 judges the matter through the 5th lord, its condition and Jupiter, and its severe verse needs several malefics at once. This app makes no statement about children.
  • "Saturn in the 5th dulls the mind." Saravali says so; the app keeps the intellect, and BPHS Ch. 24 give learning to the 9th, 10th and 11th lords in the 5th.
  • "Saturn in a trine is always good." For Taurus and Libra rising BPHS Ch. 34 agree; for Gemini and Cancer rising Saturn brings the 8th lordship into the 5th.
  • "The app would show the Saturn wealth yoga if I had it." Its Great Affluence list has no Saturn entry; BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 5 must be checked by hand.
  • "Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga means a rare conjunction." For Taurus rising it appears whenever Saturn, lord of both houses, is in an angle or trine.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturn in the 5th house bad?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 78 and the Bhrigu Sutras read it hard, especially for children. BPHS judges the 5th through its lord and Jupiter, and makes Saturn the Raja Yoga planet for Taurus rising and auspicious for Libra rising, where in the 5th it sits in a trine.
What is the Lajjit state, and how does Saturn cause it?
BPHS Ch. 45 call a planet in the 5th that is joined with Rahu, Ketu, the Sun, Saturn or Mars "ashamed", and say it harms the 5th house's significations. Saturn in the 5th makes every planet beside it Lajjit. The app does not compute avasthas.
What does Saturn aspect from the 5th house?
The 7th, the 11th and the 2nd houses.
Which rising signs give the strongest Saturn in the 5th?
By lordship, Taurus (Saturn rules the 9th and 10th and causes Raja Yoga) and Libra (the 4th and 5th). By dignity, Gemini (exalted), Virgo and Libra (own sign or Moolatrikona).
Does the app detect BPHS's Saturn wealth yoga in the 5th?
No. BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 5 need Saturn in its own sign in the 5th with the Sun and Moon in the 11th; the engine's Great Affluence list, read for this page, has no Saturn entry.
When does a Saturn in the 5th show its effects?
Classically in the Saturn Mahadasha and Antardashas; BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 count a Saturn in a trine among the escape conditions from an adverse period. The app grades the period by dignity and house only.
Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
See Saturn in the 4th house and Saturn in the 6th house; for a benefic in the same house, Venus in the 5th house.
