Venus in the 5th puts the strongest natural benefic in a trine, one of the two houses BPHS calls auspicious by definition and specially for wealth. Saravali reads the placement as happiness, children, friends and great affluence, with the rank of a minister or a judge. The Bhrigu Sutras read it as wisdom and honour from government. Few placements are described so warmly by so many sources. The texts then do what they always do with the 5th: they send the reader to the 5th lord, to Jupiter as the house's significator, and to the planets that share the house.
This page sets out those statements with their sources, the conditions each one carries, and how this app's engine produces the line you see for your own chart. It describes rules, not outcomes. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house in full, the 5th house, Putra Bhava.
A note on sources
Every classical statement on this page was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The texts' verses on numbers and ages of children are not used, and nothing here says whether anyone will or will not have children.
The house: intellect, children and authority
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 lists seven things for the 5th house: amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, royalty or authority, and fall from position. Only one of the seven is children. Three are about the mind and two about standing. Saravali Ch. 3 names the house Putra and Pratibha and ties it to Dhi, the intellect, and BPHS Ch. 29 calls its Arudha the Mantra Pada. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list adds pleasure, the arts, romance and speculation, a later list in which several items sit naturally with Venus.
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 5th a Kon, a trine, and a Panaphara. The trine status decides most of what follows. Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 call the Kendras and Konas auspicious houses whose association turns even evil into good, and Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say the lord of a Kon gives auspicious results and that the 5th and 9th are "specially for wealth". BPHS Ch. 32 also names Jupiter, not Venus, as the 5th house's fixed significator, which is why almost every 5th-house rule in Ch. 16 checks Jupiter alongside the house lord.
What the texts say about Venus in the 5th
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 66
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 66 (p. 104): "happiness, sons and friends, be fond of sexual union, be very affluent, full of everything and be a minister, or a justice". It is the most generous of the seven 5th-house verses after Jupiter's, and it reaches both halves of the house: the family half through children and friends, and the standing half through office and judgement. No condition is stated.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 29-33
Sutras 29-33 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 91, corpus line 3611): full of wisdom, a minister or commander of the army, the good luck of seeing his grandmother alive, a young wife and children, honoured by government, a clever minister, a happy wife. With a malefic's company, in a malefic's sign, or in Virgo, its debilitation, "dull headed" and in want of children; with a benefic or in its own sign or exaltation, very wise, worldly-wise, with children and conveyances. As with Venus in the 1st, Virgo is the one sign the sutras name, and the word they use, dull, reverses precisely the wisdom they gave first.
The commentator (p. 91) calls Venus still more beneficial here for Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, where it is a yoga karaka, and adds his own view that a female planet gives more daughters than sons. Of the authorities quoted (pp. 91-92), Brihat Jatak gives intelligence, Phaldeepika wealth, royal honour, happiness from children and great intelligence, and Chamatkar Chintamani children without happiness from them; the Note says all but Chamatkar Chintamani agree the placement is good.
This app wrote two lines from that chapter. Favourable: "wisdom and real happiness through children, especially strong for several ascendants". Testing: "real strain around children under affliction". The phrase about several ascendants points at lordship, which the rising-sign table below works through.
BPHS: the house's own chapter and the benefic rule
BPHS Ch. 16 is almost entirely about children, and it judges them through the 5th lord, its dignity, the planets in the house and Jupiter. Venus is named in it twice in passing. Sl. 12 reads many children when the 5th lord is strong and the 5th receives the aspect of strong Mercury, Jupiter and Venus. A Venus in the 5th occupies the house rather than aspecting it, so that sloka is about a different placement, Venus in the 11th. Sl. 18 gives an age for a combination with Jupiter in the 5th and its lord beside Venus; this page does not use the age figures.
Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 state the plainest rule in any of the sources: if the 5th holds a benefic, or is aspected by one, or is a benefic's sign, the native will surely have children; and the 5th may be counted from the Moon or the Ascendant, the stronger prevailing. A Venus in the 5th meets the first clause by being there. This app does not compute any statement about children from that rule or any other.

Two named rules that use Venus in the 5th
Great Affluence: BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2
BPHS Ch. 41 opens with seven wealth combinations, every one built on a planet in its own sign as the 5th house with named planets in the 11th. The first is Venus's: Venus in its own sign in the 5th, with Mars in the 11th. Venus owns the 5th only for Gemini rising (Libra) and Capricorn rising (Taurus), so those are the only two Lagnas where it can form. The engine checks it exactly as written and the Yogas calculator reports it as Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence). These are rare by construction, since two planets have to be in two particular houses at once.
Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds the broader statement: the lords of the 9th and 5th, and planets joined with them, "are capable of bestowing wealth", and will give it in their dasha periods. For Gemini and Capricorn rising Venus is the 5th lord, so a Venus in the 5th for those Lagnas is the planet Sl. 16 means, placed in its own house.
The Lajjit state: BPHS Ch. 45
BPHS defines one of the planetary states, Lajjit or "ashamed", by this house: a planet placed in the 5th and associated with Rahu or Ketu, or with the Sun, Saturn or Mars, is in Lajjit Avastha, and Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 say a planet in that state in the 5th brings "destruction of progeny, or ... only one surviving child". That is the text's statement, not a forecast. For Venus this is not a remote case. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so the Sun shares Venus's sign often, and the nodes are in the 5th with Venus in some charts too. This app's engine does not compute the avasthas, so a favourable Venus line can print for a Venus that BPHS Ch. 45 would call Lajjit. The worked chart below is an example.
Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules
With whole-sign houses, a Venus in the 5th is in the fifth sign from your Ascendant. That fixes its dignity and the two houses it rules. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign; without a birth time no house can be read. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 5th, and two apply to every row.
| Ascendant | Venus in | Natural dignity | Venus rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 5th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 2nd and 7th | Sl. 17: wealthy, intent on earning; Sl. 77: honourable, virtuous, delighted, wealthy |
| Taurus | Virgo | Debilitated | 1st and 6th | Sl. 5: mediocre happiness from children, honourable; Sl. 65: fluctuating finances, yet happy and kind |
| Gemini | Libra | Moolatrikona 0-15 deg; own sign after | 5th and 12th | Sl. 53: progeny if related to a benefic, virtuous; Sl. 137: short of learning, spends |
| Cancer | Scorpio | Neutral (Mars) | 4th and 11th | Sl. 41: happy, liked by all, self-earned wealth; Sl. 125: happy, educated, religious |
| Leo | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 3rd and 10th | Sl. 29: has sons, virtuous; Sl. 113: all kinds of learning, wealthy |
| Virgo | Capricorn | Friendly (Saturn) | 2nd and 9th | Sl. 17: wealthy; Sl. 101: sons and prosperity, charitable, learned |
| Libra | Aquarius | Friendly (Saturn) | 1st and 8th | Sl. 5: mediocre happiness from children; Sl. 89: dull-witted, yet long-lived and wealthy |
| Scorpio | Pisces | Exalted | 7th and 12th | Sl. 77: endowed with all virtues, wealthy; Sl. 137: short of sons and of learning |
| Sagittarius | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 6th and 11th | Sl. 65: friction with sons and friends; Sl. 125: happy, educated |
| Capricorn | Taurus | Own sign | 5th and 10th | Sl. 53: progeny if related to a benefic; Sl. 113: all kinds of learning |
| Aquarius | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 4th and 9th | Sl. 41: happy, liked by all; Sl. 101: sons and prosperity, learned |
| Pisces | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 3rd and 8th | Sl. 29: has sons, virtuous; Sl. 89: dull-witted, limited children |
Learning appears in these slokas as often as children: the 10th lord in the 5th gives all kinds of learning, the 11th lord education, the 9th lord learning, and the 8th and 12th lords take away wit and learning. For Venus that means the intellectual reading of the placement depends mostly on lordship. Leo, Capricorn, Cancer and Sagittarius rising bring the learning slokas; Libra, Pisces, Gemini and Scorpio rising bring one of the two that dull it.
Capricorn rising is the strongest assembly in the table. Venus is in its own Taurus, rules the 5th and 10th, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 call it the only planet able to give a superior Yoga for that Lagna. Ch. 39 Sl. 37 forms a Raj Yoga from the 4th or 10th lord joined to the 5th or 9th lord; here one planet holds both. Scorpio rising gives the exalted case, carrying the 7th and 12th lordships, and Taurus rising the debilitated one, where Venus is the Lagna lord and the Bhrigu Sutras' "dull headed" for Virgo applies.
Saravali's sign chapter, Ch. 28, adds a temperament to each of those cases. For Taurus, Capricorn rising's sign, it gives charity, support of relatives, learning and a principal position. For Libra, Gemini rising's, hard-earned money, valour, protection of one's own people and fortune. For Pisces, Scorpio rising's, courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech and wisdom. For Virgo, Taurus rising's, skill, sweet speech and standing as a scholar in an assembly, devoid of happiness and pleasures (Sl. 11-12 also give more daughters than sons). Learning or wisdom appears in three of the four, which agrees with the 5th house's own subject even though the house verse and the sign verse are separate passages.
Gemini and Capricorn rising: the 5th lord at home
For these two Lagnas Venus is the 5th lord in the 5th, and BPHS speaks about it with two voices. Ch. 16 Sl. 16 lists the 5th lord in the 5th among the supportive positions; Sl. 8 lists "in Putr itself" among the difficult ones. Ch. 24 Sl. 53 settles it with a condition: progeny when the lord is related to a benefic, none when related to a malefic, and virtuous and dear to friends either way. So for these two charts, what joins or aspects Venus in the 5th is the deciding question in BPHS's own terms.
Taurus and Libra rising: the Lagna lord in the 5th
For these two Lagnas Venus is the Lagna lord sitting in the 5th, and BPHS Ch. 39 builds its Raj Yogas on exactly this pair. Sl. 3-5 say Raj Yogas are judged from the Ascendant lord with the 5th lord, among other pairs, with full, half or a quarter of the effect according to their strength. Sl. 6-7 call it Maha Raj Yog when the Ascendant lord and the 5th lord exchange signs. With Taurus rising, Venus in the 5th is in Virgo, and the exchange needs Mercury, the 5th lord, in Taurus. With Libra rising, Venus in the 5th is in Aquarius, and the exchange needs Saturn in Libra.
The two cases differ sharply in dignity. For Taurus rising the exchange would put Venus in its debilitation sign, the case the Bhrigu Sutras call dull, while Mercury, its partner, sits in a friend's sign. For Libra rising Venus sits in Aquarius, a sign of its natural friend Saturn, and Saturn in Libra is exalted. Ch. 39 Sl. 3-5 grade the yoga by strength, so the same named combination would carry very different weight in the two charts. Ch. 24 Sl. 5 reads the Lagna lord in the 5th, in either chart, as mediocre happiness from children, the loss of the first child, honourable, given to anger and dear to the king.
How this app decides favourable or testing
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line for Venus in the 5th when Venus is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign. The 5th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. For signs Venus neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine combines Venus's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation read from your chart, as BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 describe: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.
- Always favourable: Gemini and Capricorn rising (own sign) and Scorpio rising (exalted).
- Never favourable: Taurus rising, Venus debilitated in Virgo.
- Favourable if Saturn or Mercury is well placed from Venus: Virgo, Libra and Aquarius rising; otherwise Neutral.
- Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Cancer, Leo and Sagittarius rising.
- At best Neutral: Aries and Pisces rising, with Venus in a sign of the Sun or the Moon. For Aries rising the Sun sits within two signs of Venus, so Leo reads Neutral unless the Sun is in Leo too, in which case it is Enemy sign and, for this house, also the Lajjit association.
In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,105 had Venus in the 5th, and 59.1 per cent printed the favourable line, more than for Venus in any of the 1st to 4th houses in the same run. The reason is mechanical: Venus was exalted in 11.2 per cent of them and debilitated in only 7.0. The test still leaves out what BPHS Ch. 16 checks first: the 5th lord's house and condition, Jupiter, and the company Venus keeps. A testing line means Venus lacks dignity and nothing more.
The aspect: Venus looks at the 11th
BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give Venus only its 7th-sign aspect, and from the 5th that falls on the 11th house, the house of gains. The engine's aspectedHouses() returns that one house. The 5th and 11th are the two houses the Great Affluence combinations of Ch. 41 link, and Venus in the 5th looks directly across at the house where Ch. 41 Sl. 2 wants Mars. None of the texts cited here states a separate result for Venus aspecting the 11th from the 5th. For that house, see the 11th house.
Going the other way, the 5th is aspected by whatever sits in the 11th, by Jupiter from the 1st or 9th, by Mars from the 2nd or 10th, and by Saturn from the 3rd or 8th. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 37 gives the harsh reverse of its children rule only when the 5th is a malefic's sign occupied by strong malefics with no benefic aspect; a Venus in the house rules that case out.
Strength and flags
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 give Venus full directional strength in the 4th and none in the 10th. The 5th is one house from the 4th, and the Shad Bala calculator gave Venus 3.33 of 4 directional points in the worked chart. Combustion is the common weakness, within 10 degrees of the Sun or 8 when retrograde; the engine zeroes the position score, and Venus was combust in 14.9 per cent of the sample. Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays; the engine does not. A combust Venus in the 5th is also, by BPHS Ch. 45, very likely Lajjit, since the Sun is then in the same house.
The Mild Kendradhipathya flag appears with Venus in the 5th for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius rising, where Venus owns the 4th, 7th or 10th but not the 1st. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 overrides it for Capricorn and Aquarius, where Venus also owns a trine. It is a note about the rule, not a second verdict.
Timing
The Venus Mahadasha lasts twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 describe the period of a Venus in its own or exaltation sign, an angle or a trine as one of clothes, ornaments, conveyances, land and recognition, and a Venus in the 5th always meets the trine condition. Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 5th lord's period one of the plainly good lines in the list, progress in education and happiness from children, which this app shows as "progress in education and happiness through children" when Venus rules your 5th. The sub-period chapters repeatedly list the 5th with the angles and the 9th as a good placement for a sub-period lord. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon, and Venus passing the 5th from the Moon is one of the favourable benefic positions. Here, as with the 2nd, the natal and transit frames happen to point the same way. In the sign-based dashas, BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 18-19 call a sign's period favourable when benefics occupy the 5th and 9th from it, a Rasi-dasha rule that stays separate from Vimshottari.
A worked chart
The figures below are this app's engine output for a birth at 20:20 IST on 30 June 1993 in New Delhi. They illustrate the rules, and are not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Capricorn 0.47 deg |
| Venus | Taurus 0.57 deg (Krittika), 5th house, own sign, direct, not combust |
| Also in the 5th | Ketu, Taurus 17.09 deg |
| Saturn, the Lagna lord | Aquarius 6.13 deg, retrograde, Moolatrikona, 2nd house |
| Jupiter | Virgo 12.20 deg, 9th house |
| Moon / Mars | Scorpio (Vishakha), 11th house, with Rahu / Leo, 8th house |
| House line | Favourable: "wisdom and real happiness through children, especially strong for several ascendants" |
| Dasha verdict / quality | Favourable / good |
| Strength | 13.46 of 20, Strong; aspected by the Moon, Jupiter and Rahu |
| Venus Mahadasha | 22 Nov 2036 to 22 Nov 2056 |
Several classical conditions are met. Venus is the 5th lord in its own sign in the 5th, and the Lagna lord Saturn is in its own Aquarius; BPHS Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3 read both lords in their own signs as thorough happiness through children. Venus also rules the 10th, so Ch. 24 Sl. 113 applies alongside Sl. 53, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 single Venus out for Capricorn rising. Jupiter in the 9th aspects the 5th, and the Moon in the 11th aspects it too, so the 5th holds a benefic, is a benefic's sign and is aspected by benefics, every clause of Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26.
Two are not. Ketu shares the 5th with Venus, which by BPHS Ch. 45 puts Venus in the Lajjit state; the engine does not test avasthas, so nothing in the app's output shows it. And Ch. 24 Sl. 53 makes the 5th lord at home depend on its company: here Venus is related to benefics by aspect and to a malefic, Ketu, by conjunction, so the sloka's condition points both ways. Great Affluence does not form, because Mars is in the 8th, not the 11th; the 11th holds the Moon and Rahu. Venus at 0.57 degrees is in its first decanate, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the start of its period, here from age 43.
Checking a Venus in the 5th in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 5th if it is in the fifth sign from your Ascendant.
- Find Venus's dignity, and for a non-dignified sign, where that sign's lord sits from Venus. Note combustion.
- Find your 5th lord and Lagna lord. Are they in their own signs, an angle or a trine (Ch. 16 Sl. 1-3), or in the 6th, 8th or 12th (Sl. 8)?
- What shares the 5th with Venus? The Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu there is BPHS Ch. 45's Lajjit condition, which the app does not test.
- Where is Jupiter, the 5th house's significator? For Gemini or Capricorn rising, is Mars in the 11th (Ch. 41 Sl. 2)?
- Check strength in the Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators, and the division BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to children in the Saptamsa (D7) calculator, which needs an accurate birth time.
- Note when the Venus periods run, and keep transits, counted from the Moon, separate.
The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.
Common misreadings
- "Venus in the 5th means children." Saravali Ch. 34 reads a benefic in the 5th that way, but BPHS Ch. 16 judges the matter through the 5th lord, its condition and Jupiter. This app makes no statement about children.
- "Venus is the significator of the 5th." BPHS Ch. 32 names Jupiter. Venus is the significator of the 7th.
- "Venus in the 5th always gives the wealth yoga." BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2 needs Venus in its own sign, which means Gemini or Capricorn rising, and Mars in the 11th as well.
- "The app says favourable, so nothing is wrong with the placement." The engine does not check the Lajjit state of BPHS Ch. 45, and a Venus beside the Sun, Mars, Saturn, Rahu or Ketu in the 5th is in it.
- "Venus in the 5th is about romance." That is in the later Bhrigu Sutras house list. BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6 gives the house learning, knowledge, children and authority.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Venus in the 5th house good?
- All three sources read it favourably. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 66 gives happiness, sons, friends, great affluence and the rank of a minister or judge; the Bhrigu Sutras give wisdom and honour from government, and dullness only with a malefic's company or sign or in Virgo. BPHS judges the house mainly through its lord and Jupiter.
- Does Venus in the 5th form a wealth yoga?
- BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2 forms one when Venus is in its own sign as the 5th house and Mars is in the 11th. That needs Gemini or Capricorn rising. The engine detects it as Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence).
- What is the Lajjit state, and does it apply to my Venus?
- BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 call a planet in the 5th that is associated with Rahu, Ketu, the Sun, Saturn or Mars "ashamed" (Lajjit), and read it as harm to progeny. Check what shares your 5th with Venus. This app does not compute it.
- What does Venus aspect from the 5th house?
- Only the 11th house, the house of gains. The texts cited here give no separate result for that aspect.
- Which rising signs give the strongest Venus in the 5th?
- By dignity, Gemini and Capricorn (own sign) and Scorpio (exalted). By lordship, Capricorn stands out: Venus rules the 5th and 10th and BPHS Ch. 34 makes it the superior Yoga giver for that Lagna.
- Why does the app say favourable more often for the 5th than for other houses?
- Because in the engine sample Venus in the 5th was exalted more often and debilitated less often than in the 1st to 4th houses, and the line depends only on dignity. It is a property of the sample, not a classical rule.
- When does a Venus in the 5th show its effects?
- Classically in the Venus Mahadasha and Antardashas. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie the timing within the period to Venus's decanate. Neighbouring placements are on the Venus in the 4th and Venus in the 6th pages.
