What the classical texts say about Venus in the 6th house, where Saravali sees many foes and the Bhrigu Sutras see enemies destroyed; the Vipareeta yogas Venus can form here; and why the engine prints the testing line for every chart.

Venus in the 6th is the placement where this site's sources part company most openly. Saravali gives it many foes and little wealth. The Bhrigu Sutras give it many relations and enemies destroyed. The Bhrigu Sutras' own contents page goes further and lists the 6th, with the 12th, as a house where Venus gives Yoga effects. And this app's engine, following the Dusthana rule, prints the testing line for every Venus in the 6th it has ever seen. All of those are correct reports of their own sources. This page lays them side by side and shows where each one comes from.

It is a map of rules, not a forecast. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 6th house, Ari Bhava, which this page leans on heavily.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The 6th house's own chapter in BPHS is mostly about illness, with named diseases and ages; those are not repeated, and nothing here is medical advice.

The house: enemies, illness and effort

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 7 lists the 6th house as the maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers and the step-mother, and Ch. 17 Sl. 1 opens the house's chapter with diseases and ulcers. Saravali Ch. 3 names the house Ari, enemy, and Vrana, wound. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list gives the longer modern one: sickness, nursing, service, employees, debts, litigation and miserliness among them. Service and debt there are later additions; BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 puts debts under the 10th.

The 6th carries three labels at once. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make it an Apoklima, a Dusthana and an Upachaya, and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 call the three Dusthanas Trikas whose association "will inflict evils". BPHS Ch. 32 also names Mars, not Venus, as the 6th house's fixed significator. In the 6th-house chapter, Sl. 3-5 attach a part of the body to each planet for locating a mark or ailment, and the planet listed against the eyes is Venus; this page describes that chapter's structure and does not apply it. The Dusthana and Upachaya labels pull opposite ways. The Bhrigu Sutras commentator notices this himself, under Mars in the 6th (p. 53), and remarks that the Sutras "have apparently not taken this into account". For Venus the conflict matters more than for most planets, because the Upachaya rule as stated favours malefics, and Venus is a benefic.

Three sources, three verdicts

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 67: many foes

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 67 (p. 104): the native "will greatly dislike his wife, will have many foes, be devoid of wealth, be very much startled and be mean". It is one of the bleakest Venus verses in the chapter, and it sits in a pattern. In Saravali's 6th-house verses the three natural malefics, the Sun, Mars and Saturn, get strength, affluence and enemies conquered, while the benefics get the worst readings: the Moon is sick (Sl. 19), Jupiter humiliated though it destroys enemies (Sl. 55), Venus beset by foes. That is the Upachaya principle at work without anyone naming it.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 34-36: enemies destroyed

Sutras 34-36 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 92, corpus line 3642): a good number of relations, destruction of enemies, children and grandchildren; wasteful expenditure, deceit and disease. That is the clear disagreement: Saravali gives many foes; the Bhrigu Sutras give enemies destroyed. The commentator himself calls some of the Venus sutras "very confusing", pointing out that children and grandchildren are promised from a house and a planet that signify neither.

Sutra 36 adds the inversion the Bhrigu text applies to this house. If the lord of the 6th is strong, relations and enemies increase; if it is with a malefic, debilitated or with the Moon, relations are lost and enemies destroyed. The commentator spells out the logic: a strong 6th house means more enemies and diseases, a weak one means fewer. Of the authorities quoted (pp. 92-93), Brihat Jatak and Phaldeepika give no enemies, Saravali and Chamatkar Chintamani many or dangerous ones, and the Note holds Brihat Jatak and Phaldeepika "more authoritative". BPHS does not state the inversion as a rule, so two classical attitudes are on record, and the Venus-in-the-6th sutra is where the Bhrigu one is stated.

The Bhrigu Sutras contents page: Yoga effects

The contents of the Bhrigu Sutras (Chapter VII, p. 2) add one more line: "Venus gives yoga effects when posited in the 6th and 12th houses". Of the three statements, it is the most favourable, and it is the one the engine's house rule contradicts most directly. The app's rule is stricter than the texts here, and the reader should see both.

Venus in the 6th in the sources and in this app.

Why this app always prints the testing line

The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable house line only when two things hold: strong dignity, and a house outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The second condition fails for every Venus in the 6th, so the favourable line can never print, however Venus is placed by sign. In the engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,102 had Venus in the 6th, and every one printed the testing line. The favourable line written for this house, "real support from relations and victory over rivals when well-placed", which is the Bhrigu reading, exists in the app's strings and is never shown.

The dasha side follows the same rule. buildDashaLordEffects() calls a Venus period unfavourable whenever Venus is in a dusthana, and dashaQuality() grades it challenging. Both did so for all 10,102 sample charts. That applies BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 exactly, and Sl. 83-84 describe a Venus in the 6th, 8th or 12th in the same terms: strained relations with kin, losses in business and separations. On the dasha question the app and BPHS agree.

What the sample also shows is how often that verdict overrides a strong sign. Venus was in a dignified sign in a large share of those charts: Friendly 30.4 per cent, Own sign 17.9, Exalted 11.3 and Moolatrikona 0.9. Six in ten 6th-house Venuses would have printed the favourable line in any non-dusthana house. The consequence is plain: for the 6th, 8th and 12th the app always shows the testing line, and the reader should read the sources beside it.

Vipareeta Raja Yoga: when Venus rules a Trika

The engine has one rule that reads a planet in the 6th favourably. Its Yogas calculator reports a Vipareeta Raja Yoga when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in any of those three houses: Harsha for the 6th lord, Sarala for the 8th, Vimala for the 12th. The app's wording is that a difficult house's energy turns into an unexpected source of gain, "often most visible after periods of real struggle". The sourcing is narrow: the engine follows the case studies of Advanced Predictive Astrology, which use the yoga without printing a numbered definition; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator quotes Uttara Kalamrita for the 6th lord in the 8th or 12th (under Jupiter in the 12th, p. 86) and extends it himself to the 6th lord in the 6th; and BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 66 gives the 6th lord in the 6th only a mild reading.

Venus rules a Trika for six of the twelve rising signs, and in each of those a Venus in the 6th forms one of the three yogas: Harsha for Taurus and Sagittarius rising, where Venus rules the 6th; Sarala for Libra and Pisces rising, where it rules the 8th; Vimala for Gemini and Scorpio rising, where it rules the 12th. So for half of all Lagnas the same Venus in the 6th prints a testing house line and a Vipareeta yoga side by side. Each follows its own source.

Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules

With whole-sign houses, a Venus in the 6th is in the sixth sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 6th, and two apply to every row. The lord slokas for the 6th mostly carry the Trika rule: the lords of other houses lose something when they come here.

Two rows carry their own conditions, which makes them the useful ones. Sl. 6 applies to the Lagna lord in the 6th only if it is related to a malefic and has no benefic aspect: that is Venus for Taurus and Libra rising. Sl. 18 turns entirely on company: the 2nd lord in the 6th gains through enemies with a benefic and loses through them with a malefic, which is Venus for Aries and Virgo rising. Sl. 90, for Libra and Pisces rising, gives the 8th lord in the 6th victory over enemies, one of BPHS's nearest equivalents to the Bhrigu inversion.

Read beside BPHS Ch. 34 on lordship, the table holds one odd pair. For Capricorn rising Venus is the planet BPHS calls the superior Yoga giver, as lord of the 5th and 10th, and here it sits in a Trika; the Bhrigu commentator warns, under Jupiter in the 6th and 12th, that a benefic in a Dusthana as lord of an auspicious house damages that house. For Sagittarius rising BPHS calls Venus the only inauspicious graha, as lord of the 6th and 11th, and here it sits in its own 6th, forming Harsha. The house that hurts the good lord helps, by the Vipareeta rule, the bad one.

Taurus and Libra rising: the Lagna lord in a Trika

For these two Lagnas Venus is the Lagna lord, and the 6th is one of the three houses BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 say reduce physical felicity when the Lagna lord sits there. BPHS Ch. 42, on penury, names the same position in two conditional rules. Sl. 5: the Lagna lord with a malefic in the 6th, 8th or 12th while the 2nd lord is in an enemy's sign or debilitated. Sl. 6: the Lagna lord joined to the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th, or with Saturn, with no benefic aspect. Each needs two or three conditions at once; none is triggered by a single planet in the 6th.

Taurus rising has a twist. Venus is there both the Lagna lord and the 6th lord, so "the Lagna lord joined to the 6th lord" is one planet, and whether Sl. 6 can apply to a single planet that holds both roles is a question the sloka does not settle. This page does not settle it either.

Saravali's sign verses for the dignified cases

Saravali Ch. 28 describes Venus by sign, independent of house. Four of them fall in the 6th for particular Lagnas. For Libra (Taurus rising) the verse gives hard-earned money, valour, fine dress, protection of one's own people and fortune. For Taurus (Sagittarius rising) it gives agriculture, scents and fine robes, charity and support of relatives. For Pisces (Libra rising) it gives courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech and wisdom. For Virgo (Aries rising), the debilitation sign, it gives skill and several incomes, devoid of happiness and pleasures.

Those sign verses are generous where the house verse is not. A reader of a 6th-house Venus in Pisces therefore holds two Saravali sentences that point opposite ways, great wealth from the sign chapter and little wealth from the house chapter, and the two chapters answer different questions. The Bhrigu Sutras' "good number of relations" and Saravali's Taurus verse, "support of relatives", happen to meet on the same word.

The dignity label you will still see

Although the house line ignores it, the engine still computes Venus's dignity in the 6th, and it feeds the strength panel. For signs Venus neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine combines Venus's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.

  • Strong dignity whatever else: Taurus and Sagittarius rising (own sign) and Libra rising (exalted).
  • Debilitated: Aries rising, Venus in Virgo.
  • Friendly or Neutral, decided by Saturn or Mercury: Leo, Virgo and Capricorn rising.
  • Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Gemini, Cancer and Scorpio rising.
  • At best Neutral: Aquarius and Pisces rising, with Venus in a sign of the Moon or the Sun.

The Upachaya side: benefics and wealth

Two wealth rules count a benefic in the 6th in its favour. BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 6 calls a person very affluent when all three benefics are in Upachayas counted from the Moon, and Saravali's Dhana Yoga sloka (Ch. 13 Sl. 32) says the same of the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th from the Lagna or the Moon, with two benefics giving moderate wealth and one little. A Venus in the 6th from the Lagna counts toward Saravali's version. The tension is plain: the same Saravali reads Venus in the 6th as lacking wealth, and the sources leave that unresolved.

The Apoklima label adds a strength point. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 give a planet in an Apoklima only a quarter of the positional strength called Kendradi Bala, against the full amount in an angle. In the Shad Bala calculator a Venus in the 6th therefore starts behind a Venus in the 4th or 7th on that component, whatever its sign.

The aspect: Venus looks at the 12th

BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give Venus only the 7th-sign aspect, and from the 6th it falls on the 12th, the other house the Bhrigu Sutras' contents page names for Venus's Yoga effects. The engine returns the 12th and nothing else. None of the texts cited here states a separate result for that aspect. The Venus in the 12th house page looks at the reverse placement, and the 12th house page at the house.

The 6th house itself is aspected by whatever sits in the 12th, by Jupiter from the 2nd or 10th, by Mars from the 3rd or 11th, and by Saturn from the 4th or 9th. Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 say a house prospers when a benefic joins or aspects it. For the 6th, the Bhrigu commentator's logic under Sutra 36 asks what exactly is meant to prosper, and this page leaves that question open.

Timing: the Venus period and transits

The Venus Mahadasha runs twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). For a Venus in the 6th BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 83-84 give the unfavourable reading, and the Venus Mahadasha page also covers Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 1/2's release: the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord becomes favourable if that lord is associated with the lord of a trine, and a dasha lord receiving the aspect of a Kendra or trine lord is also favourable. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 13 makes the same exception for finances: harm in the dasha of a planet tied to a Trika lord, unless a trine lord aspects it. The engine applies neither release. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon. For the benefics the 3rd and 6th from the Moon are marked indifferent, and Venus in the 6th from the Moon carries an extra "intensified" flag from the engine's source table, which it uses to pick out a notable transit. That flag marks the combination as powerful in its source; it does not turn the indifferent verdict into a good or bad one.

Venus is in its own sign, Strong by the engine's Shad Bala, retrograde (which earns motional strength) and aspected by Jupiter. In any of the nine non-dusthana houses it would have printed the favourable line and a good dasha quality. In the 6th it prints the testing line and a challenging quality, and beside them the Harsha Yoga, because for Taurus rising Venus is the 6th lord.

The classical sources read it in several directions at once. Venus is both the Lagna lord and the 6th lord here. Ch. 24 Sl. 6 needs a malefic link and no benefic aspect before it gives the Lagna lord in the 6th trouble from enemies: the Sun, a malefic, is with Venus, but Jupiter, a benefic, aspects it, so the condition is not met. Sl. 66 gives the 6th lord in the 6th enmity with kin and friendliness to others. Bhrigu Sutra 36 is met on both clauses at once: the 6th lord is strong, which it says increases relations and enemies, and it is with a malefic, which it says destroys enemies. And the Venus period runs from age 42; Venus at 24.79 degrees is in its last decanate but retrograde, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 read as reversing the order, bringing its effects to the start of the period.

The penury rules of BPHS Ch. 42 can be checked too. Sl. 5 needs the Lagna lord with a malefic in a Trika, which holds here, and the 2nd lord in an enemy's sign or debilitated as well. The 2nd lord for Taurus rising is Mercury, which the engine places in Scorpio in a Friendly sign, so the second half fails and the rule is not met. Sl. 6 needs no benefic aspect, and Jupiter supplies one. Every harsh rule in reach of this chart stops on one of its own conditions, which is the pattern of the 6th-house rules as a whole.

Checking a Venus in the 6th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 6th if it is in the sixth sign from your Ascendant.
  2. Note that the app's house line will be testing whatever Venus's sign. Look at the dignity label separately.
  3. Find what Venus rules. If it rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala in the yogas list.
  4. Find your 6th lord and its condition: Bhrigu Sutra 36 reads a strong one as more enemies and a weak or afflicted one as fewer.
  5. Is a benefic aspecting Venus, or a trine lord associated with it? BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 and Ch. 42 Sl. 13 name those as releases.
  6. Check strength in the Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators, and the 6th house's points in the Ashtakavarga table.
  7. Look up the Venus periods, and keep transits, counted from the Moon, separate.

The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.

Common misreadings

  • "The app says testing, so my Venus is weak." The house line is testing for every Venus in the 6th. Dignity and strength are reported separately and can be excellent.
  • "Venus in the 6th means enemies." Saravali says many foes; the Bhrigu Sutras say enemies destroyed. The sources disagree, and both are on record.
  • "Venus in the 6th is a Vipareeta Raja Yoga." Only when Venus rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, which is true for six rising signs. For the other six there is no such yoga.
  • "Benefics in Upachayas give wealth, so this is a wealth placement." Saravali's Dhana Yoga counts it, and the same Saravali reads Venus in the 6th as lacking wealth.
  • "Venus in the 6th means illness." BPHS Ch. 17 is a chapter of multi-factor combinations, and no single placement in it is a diagnosis. Nothing here is medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is Venus in the 6th house bad?
The sources disagree. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 67 gives many foes and little wealth; the Bhrigu Sutras give many relations, enemies destroyed and wasteful spending; their contents page lists the 6th as a house where Venus gives Yoga effects. BPHS treats the 6th as a Trika and reads a Venus period from there as unfavourable.
Why does the app always show the testing line for Venus in the 6th?
Because its rule requires the house to be outside the 6th, 8th and 12th before the favourable line can print. In the engine sample that held for no Venus-in-the-6th chart at all, whatever the sign.
Does Venus in the 6th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
When Venus rules a Trika: Harsha for Taurus and Sagittarius rising, Sarala for Libra and Pisces rising, Vimala for Gemini and Scorpio rising. The engine follows a modern source here; BPHS Ch. 24 reads the same placements more plainly.
What does Venus aspect from the 6th?
Only the 12th house. The texts cited here give no separate result for that aspect.
Is the Venus Mahadasha bad if Venus is in the 6th?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 83-84 describe it as unfavourable, and the app grades it challenging. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 allow it to become favourable if Venus is associated with a trine lord or aspected by a Kendra or trine lord; the app does not apply that.
What is the "intensified" flag for Venus in the 6th from the Moon?
The engine's transit source lists one powerful combination per planet, and for Venus it is the 6th from the Moon. The app uses it to pick out a notable transit; the verdict for Venus there remains indifferent.
Where can I compare the neighbouring placements?
See Venus in the 5th house and Venus in the 7th house. The 7th is the house Venus signifies.
