Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Saturn in the 9th house, read hard by Saravali's house verse and turned round by Saravali's own rule for a malefic that owns the 9th; the father; Taurus rising, where Saturn is the Raja Yoga planet; and how this app decides favourable or testing.

Saravali reads Saturn in the 9th harshly in one chapter and gives the rule that reverses it in the next. Its house verse, Ch. 30 Sl. 82, gives a Saturn in the 9th little religious merit, little wealth, and no happiness from siblings or children. Its own chapter on the house of fortune, Ch. 32, then says a malefic in the 9th that owns the house proves auspicious, more so with a benefic's aspect. Saturn owns the 9th for two rising signs, and for one of them BPHS makes it the planet that causes Raja Yoga. This page follows those rules and the conditions around them.

It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone or about any parent. For the planet, see Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 9th house, Dharma Bhava.

A note on sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The combinations in BPHS Ch. 20 for a father's death are not reproduced. Statements about the father are the texts' own.

The house: fortune, religion and the father

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10 list the 9th as fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines. Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 add the father, read from the 9th and from the 9th counted from the Sun, and BPHS Ch. 29 name the house's Arudha the Pitru Pad. Saravali calls the 9th Bhagyasthana and gives it a chapter of its own, Ch. 32. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list adds faith, the preceptor, higher education and long journeys.

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 9th a Kona and an Apoklima. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 call a trine lord auspicious, the 5th and 9th specially for wealth, and the 9th above the 5th; Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 say the Kendras and Konas turn even evil into auspiciousness. And Ch. 32 name Jupiter the 9th house's fixed significator, so the 9th is read through three legs: the house, its lord and Jupiter, with the Sun added for the father.

What the texts say about Saturn in the 9th

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 82

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 82 (p. 105): "devoid of religious merits, will not have much wealth, be bereft of co-born, sons and happiness and will cause sorrow to others". It touches the house's religion and fortune and two subjects that belong to other houses. It carries no condition, and it is one of the hardest of the seven 9th-house verses.

Saravali Ch. 32: the house of fortune's own rules

Saravali's chapter on the 9th then gives four general rules, the most reusable lines in the chapter (p. 114). Sl. 25: a strong benefic in the 9th "confers kingdom", with wealth and righteousness. Sl. 26: a debilitated planet, a combust planet or a malefic in the 9th, with no benefic aspect, leaves the person without strength, wealth and fame. Sl. 27: "If the malefic in the 9th is the owner of that House, then it proves auspicious", and more so with a benefic's aspect. Sl. 29: a planet exalted in the 9th gives an excellent person with wealth, raised further by a benefic's aspect.

For Saturn, Sl. 26 and Sl. 27 between them sort every chart. Saturn owns the 9th for Taurus rising (Capricorn) and Gemini rising (Aquarius); for those two, Sl. 27 apply and the malefic proves auspicious. For Aquarius rising Saturn in the 9th is exalted in Libra, and Sl. 29 apply. For the other nine Lagnas Saturn is a malefic in the 9th that does not own it, and Sl. 26 apply unless a benefic aspects it. Ownership overrides natural malefic status in Sl. 27; it is the clearest statement of that principle anywhere in the 9th-house material.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 41-43

Sutras 41-43 (Bhrigu Sutras pp. 105-106, corpus line 4195): "sinful", yet one who has dilapidated religious buildings repaired and, at an age the text gives, bathing ghats and cow shelters built; a long-lived father if Saturn is in its own sign or exalted; a short-lived one if Saturn is weak or with a malefic (named as the text's, not a forecast). The commentator (p. 106) calls Saturn in its own sign in the 9th for Taurus and Gemini rising "a powerful Raja yoga" and names Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius rising as very favourable too. Of the authorities quoted, only Brihat Jatak reads it well; Phaldeepika, Saravali and Chamatkar Chintamani read it hard, and the Note limits Brihat Jatak's good results to a Saturn ruling an auspicious house. The own-sign and exaltation cases are the same three Lagnas Saravali's Sl. 27 and Sl. 29 single out: Taurus, Gemini and Aquarius rising. On this house, then, the Bhrigu condition and Saravali's chapter rule pick out the same charts. The word "sinful" is the text's; this page reports it without endorsing it.

This app wrote its lines from that chapter. Favourable: "hard-won fortune and a long-lived father - capable of forming real Raja Yoga in its own sign, one of Saturn's better placements for several ascendants". Testing: "a strained relationship with father or reduced fortune under affliction". Together they show the engine's two-line structure.

BPHS Ch. 20, and where Saturn is named

BPHS Ch. 20, the 9th house's own chapter, has three subjects: the reader's fortune, the father's condition, and ages. Nearly every verse joins two or three conditions, so none is a single-factor rule. Saturn is named once in the fortune verses: Sl. 31 give "food by begging" when Saturn sits in the 9th with the Moon while the Lagna lord is in fall, three conditions at once. Its good verses all share the 9th lord strong, Jupiter involved and the Lagna lord strong. Sl. 1 call one fortunate "if Dharm's Lord is in Dharm Bhava with strength", which is Saturn for Taurus and Gemini rising.

On the father, Ch. 20 Sl. 3-9 build their verses on the 9th lord, Venus, Jupiter and the Sun, and Saturn is not among their conditions. BPHS also reads the father from the 9th counted from the Sun (Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43), so a Saturn in the 9th from the Lagna is one of several inputs, not the reading. BPHS is not fully consistent and lists the father under the 10th as well (Ch. 11 Sl. 11); both are worth looking at.

Your rising sign: Saturn's sign and the houses it rules

With whole-sign houses, a Saturn in the 9th is in the ninth sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 9th.

Dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; lordship from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 condensed from the text (Sl. 33 also lacks paternal bliss; Sl. 81 union with many women; Sl. 93 betrays his religion, a wicked wife).

The table is unusually warm for a malefic. Aries, Taurus, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius and Capricorn rising bring two warm slokas each, because the lords of the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 10th and 11th all read well in the 9th. Only the 8th and 12th lordships bring a cool line, and the 6th lord a fluctuating one. The general pattern shows in the 9th lord's own table: the house of fortune's lord loses most in the 6th, 8th and 12th.

Taurus and Gemini rising: Saturn owns the 9th

For Taurus rising Saturn rules the 9th and 10th, a trine and an angle. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 say "Sani will cause Raj Yog", and Sl. 13 call one planet owning an angle and a trine specially a Yoga Karaka. In the 9th it is in its own Capricorn: Ch. 20 Sl. 1's 9th lord in the 9th with strength, Ch. 24 Sl. 105's abundant fortunes, Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27's malefic owner proving auspicious and the Bhrigu own-sign clause, all at once. It is the strongest Saturn-in-the-9th chart in the sources.

For Gemini rising Saturn rules the 8th and 9th. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 leave Saturn off the auspicious list for Gemini, the one Lagna where the 9th lord is not on it, because the same planet owns the 8th; Ch. 34 Sl. 15 say a trine lord that also owns an evil house does not make a Raj Yog by mere association. Saravali Sl. 27 still applies to the house itself: Saturn owns the 9th. The two books measure different things here: Ch. 34 Saturn's role in the chart, Saravali Saturn's effect on the house it owns.

Capricorn and Aquarius rising: the Lagna lord in the 9th

For these two Lagnas Saturn is the Lagna lord sitting in the 9th. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 9 read that as fortunate, dear to people, skilful and eloquent, with family and wealth. Two further rules build on it. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 say that when the 9th lord is in the Lagna and the Lagna lord in the 9th, the dashas of both produce extremely beneficial results; and Ch. 20 Sl. 29 read the same exchange, with Jupiter in the 7th, as gains of wealth and conveyances. For Capricorn rising the exchange needs Mercury in Capricorn; for Aquarius rising, Venus in Aquarius. For Aquarius rising the Saturn in the 9th is also exalted in Libra, Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 29's case, so that Lagna stacks the exchange condition on top of exaltation.

BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 23-27 grade the 9th lord by how many divisional charts place it in good dignity, and every grade is religious: visiting holy places, sacrificial rites, truthfulness and mastery of the senses, asceticism, and at the top "a synonym of Dharma". For Taurus and Gemini rising that scale applies to Saturn. It sits oddly beside Saravali's "devoid of religious merit" and the Bhrigu Sutras' "sinful", and closer to the Bhrigu Sutras' repairer of religious buildings. The app does not compute those grades.

How this app decides favourable or testing

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Saturn is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign; the 9th is not a dusthana. For other signs the engine combines Saturn's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Saturn is a temporary friend.

  • Always favourable: Taurus and Gemini rising (own sign, Moolatrikona) and Aquarius rising (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Leo rising, Saturn debilitated in Aries.
  • Favourable if Venus or Mercury sits well from Saturn: Virgo, Libra and Capricorn rising; otherwise Neutral.
  • Friendly or Enemy, decided by Jupiter: Aries and Cancer rising.
  • At best Neutral: Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces rising, with Saturn in a sign of the Moon, the Sun or Mars.

In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 9,785 had Saturn in the 9th and 45.9 per cent printed the favourable line. The always-favourable group is exactly Saravali Ch. 32's Sl. 27 and Sl. 29 group, so on this house the engine's dignity rule and Saravali's ownership rule coincide for those three Lagnas. Where they part is Sl. 26: the engine does not check whether a benefic aspects the 9th, and Saravali make that the deciding condition for every other Saturn in the house.

Two engine details apply. The strength panel adds a "badhaka house (sensitive to affliction)" note for a planet in the 9th when the rising sign is fixed (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius); it is a reason line, not a score change. BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 20-21 give a Badhak rule only for movable signs, so the fixed-sign 9th has no basis in the texts cited here. And for Taurus rising the engine's Dharma-Karmadhipati flag appears whenever Saturn is in an angle or trine, because its rule compares the houses of the 9th and 10th lords, and for Taurus they are the same planet. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 put Saturn's directional strength at 2.67 of 4 here, and in the strength run a Saturn in the 9th averaged 9.46 of 20 and was Strong in 16.1 per cent; the Shad Bala calculator shows each part.

Saturn's three aspects from the 9th

Saturn aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th places from itself (BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5). From the 9th those fall on the 11th, the 3rd and the 6th, three of the four Upachayas, the houses where a malefic's influence is read most kindly. The engine returns those three. The texts cited here state no separate result for these aspects from the 9th. The 3rd aspect is never returned and the 10th only by Mars. For the house of gains, see the 11th house.

Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 5 work the other way: one is extremely lucky if a strong planet gives its full aspect to the 9th from the 3rd, the 5th or the Ascendant. Saturn's own special aspects reach the 9th from the 7th (its 3rd aspect) and the 12th (its 10th aspect), not from those three places, so a Saturn elsewhere is not the planet that verse means, except by its universal aspect from the 3rd.

Most of Saravali Ch. 32, Sl. 6-24, read one placement, Jupiter in the 9th, coloured by each planet that aspects it, and Saturn has two entries there. Jupiter in the 9th aspected by Saturn gives immovable property; aspected by both Mars and Saturn, a spiteful person living abroad. Sl. 23 limit the list to cases where no other planet aspects. Those verses are about Saturn looking at the 9th from elsewhere, not sitting in it, but they show a Saturn signification of land and property.

Company, combinations and the Moon frame

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 put any planet joined with Saturn in the Kshudhita state. In the 9th that bears most on the 9th lord and on Jupiter, the house's significator, when either sits with Saturn. Saravali Ch. 15 reads Saturn with Jupiter as heroic, wealthy and famous, the one plainly favourable Saturn pairing, and with the Moon as well liked but without wealth; BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 31 make Saturn with the Moon in the 9th part of its "food by begging" combination when the Lagna lord is also in fall.

Two named 9th-house combinations are worth checking against Saturn. Lakshmi Yog, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28, needs the 9th lord in an angle in its own, Moolatrikona or exaltation sign; a Saturn in the 9th is in a trine, not an angle, so for Taurus and Gemini rising it cannot form from this placement. Ch. 39 Sl. 36-39 build Raj Yogas on the 5th, 10th, 4th and Lagna lords together in the 9th, and on the 4th or 10th lord joined to the 5th or 9th lord; for Taurus rising Saturn holds the 9th and 10th lordships in one planet.

Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2 allow the Bhagyasthana to be counted from the Moon as well as the Ascendant, the stronger prevailing. Find your Moon sign and count nine to see whether Saturn sits in the house of fortune by that count too.

Saravali by dignity and by sign

Saravali Ch. 45 describes Saturn by dignity: exalted, royal assignments and leadership; in Moolatrikona, of good family, wealthy and valorous; in its own sign, honourable and happy; debilitated, adversity; in an enemy's sign, dirty and distressed; in a friend's sign, depending on others for food. Its Ch. 29 by sign gives, for the 9th-house cases that decide the engine outright: Capricorn (Taurus rising), learned in scripture and many arts, honourable, famous; Aquarius (Gemini rising), eminent but "a great liar"; Libra (Aquarius rising), rich, a king or a scholar; Aries (Leo rising), worn down by hard labour. And for Aries and Cancer rising, where Saturn in the 9th is in Sagittarius or Pisces, the chapter's kindest verses: skilled in teaching, and first among relatives with later authority. The Capricorn verse's "learned in scripture" sits directly against the house verse's "devoid of religious merit".

Timing

The Saturn Mahadasha lasts nineteen years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 53-56 describe a strong Saturn's period as recognition, position and property; Sl. 57-60 the reverse for a Saturn in the 6th, 8th or 12th, debilitated or combust, with an escape for a Saturn in an angle or trine, joined or aspected by a benefic, or in Jupiter's signs. A Saturn in the 9th is in a trine, so it meets the escape by position. Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give the 9th lord's own period education, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains, which the app shows when Saturn rules your 9th, for Taurus and Gemini rising; Ch. 41 Sl. 16 add that the 9th lord gives wealth in its period. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon and reads Saturn in the 9th from the Moon as unremarkable. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 313), quoting Harihar Mazumdar, gives a different rule counted from natal Saturn rather than the Moon: Saturn in a trine from its own birth position, the 9th among them, brings "auspicious moments", and in an angle from it, distress. The app computes neither that rule nor any other transit counted from natal Saturn.

This is the Taurus case in full. Saturn is the 9th and 10th lord in its own sign in the 9th: BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24's Raja Yoga planet, Ch. 20 Sl. 1's 9th lord in the 9th, Ch. 24 Sl. 105 and Sl. 117, Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27's malefic owner, and the Bhrigu own-sign clause for the father. The engine agrees on every line and adds the Dharma-Karmadhipati flag, which for this Lagna is Saturn's double lordship rather than a conjunction. The Lagna lord, Venus, is in its own sign in the Lagna, the person able to receive the fortune.

Two details pull the other way. The only aspect the engine records on Saturn is Mars's, from the 2nd; Saravali Sl. 27's "more so with a benefic's aspect" is not met, since Jupiter in the 10th aspects the 2nd, 4th and 6th. And the strength panel carries the badhaka note for a fixed Lagna. The Moon in Ashwini starts life in Ketu's Mahadasha, and the Saturn period does not begin until 2102, beyond any ordinary lifespan; the dasha verdict here describes a period this chart will not reach in practice.

Checking a Saturn in the 9th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Saturn is in the 9th if it is in the ninth sign from your Ascendant.
  2. Does Saturn own your 9th (Taurus or Gemini rising), or is it exalted there (Aquarius rising)? That is Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27 or 29.
  3. Otherwise, does a benefic aspect Saturn or the 9th? Without one, Saravali Sl. 26 apply.
  4. Find your 9th lord, Lagna lord and Jupiter: Ch. 20 judges fortune through all three.
  5. Read the two Ch. 24 slokas for the houses Saturn rules in the table above.
  6. Look at the Pitru Pada in the Bhava Padas calculator, and repeat the 9th-house check from the Moon, as Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2 allow.
  7. Note when the Saturn periods run, and keep transits separate.

The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.

Common misreadings

  • "Saturn in the 9th ruins fortune." Saravali's house verse reads it hard, but Saravali's own Ch. 32 Sl. 27 say a malefic that owns the 9th proves auspicious, and BPHS makes Saturn the Raja Yoga planet for Taurus rising.
  • "Saturn in the 9th harms the father." BPHS reads the father from the 9th, the 9th from the Sun and the 9th lord, and the Bhrigu Sutras give a long-lived father in own sign or exaltation. This app says nothing about any parent.
  • "Saturn in the 9th means no religion." Saravali says so; the Bhrigu Sutras have the same person repairing religious buildings.
  • "The badhaka note means Saturn is afflicted." It is a reason line the engine adds for fixed Lagnas, with no score change and no classical source on this site.
  • "Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga is rare." For Taurus rising the engine raises it whenever Saturn is in an angle or trine.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturn in the 9th house bad?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 82 read it hard. Saravali Ch. 32 then say a malefic in the 9th that owns the house proves auspicious, and an exalted planet there gives wealth; that covers Taurus, Gemini and Aquarius rising. For other Lagnas, Ch. 32 Sl. 26 read a malefic in the 9th badly unless a benefic aspects it.
Which rising sign gives the strongest Saturn in the 9th?
Taurus: Saturn rules the 9th and 10th, causes Raja Yoga by BPHS Ch. 34, and sits in its own Capricorn in the 9th.
What does Saturn aspect from the 9th house?
The 11th, the 3rd and the 6th houses, three of the four growing houses.
What do the texts say about the father with Saturn in the 9th?
The Bhrigu Sutras give a long-lived father if Saturn is in its own sign or exalted. BPHS reads the father from the 9th, its lord and the 9th from the Sun together. This app makes no statement about any parent.
What is the badhaka note on my Saturn in the 9th?
A reason line the engine adds for a planet in the 9th when the rising sign is fixed. It does not change the strength score, and this site's source pages do not give its classical basis.
When does a Saturn in the 9th show its effects?
Classically in the Saturn Mahadasha and Antardashas; BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 57-60 count a Saturn in a trine among the escape conditions from an adverse period. If Saturn rules your 9th, the app adds the 9th lord's theme of education, spirituality and unexpected gains.
Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
See Saturn in the 8th house and Saturn in the 10th house; for a benefic in the same house, Venus in the 9th house.
