The 9th is the house BPHS ranks highest among the trines, the house of fortune, religion and the father. Venus in the 9th is one of the few placements the house's own chapter names directly: BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 3 puts Venus in the 9th into its rule for a fortunate father. Saravali reads it as wealth, charity and honour shown to elders and guests, and the Bhrigu Sutras as a religious mind, every comfort and a long-lived father. The app's own line calls it one of Venus's best placements. What changes the reading from chart to chart is what the texts always point to here: the 9th lord, Jupiter as the house's significator, and the condition of the Lagna lord.
This page sets out those statements with their sources and conditions, and follows the placement through this app's engine. It is a guide to rules, not a forecast about any person or parent. For the planet, see Venus in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 9th house, Dharma Bhava.
A note on sources
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Statements about the father are the texts' own and are not forecasts; the combinations for a father's death in BPHS Ch. 20 are not reproduced.
The house: fortune, religion and the father
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10 list the 9th as fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines. The father is not in that line, but Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 supply him: the 9th house and the 9th counted from the Sun deal with the father, and the house's Arudha is the Pitru Pad. Saravali gives the 9th a whole chapter, Ch. 32, and calls it Bhagyasthana, the house of fortune. The Bhrigu Sutras' own house list adds faith, the preceptor, higher education and long journeys.
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 9th a Kona, a trine, and an Apoklima; it is the one house that is both. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say a trine lord gives auspicious results, that the 5th and 9th are specially for wealth, and that the 9th ranks above the 5th. Ch. 41 Sl. 28 call the trines Lakshmi Sthanas. And Ch. 32 name Jupiter the 9th house's fixed significator, so a reading of the house has three legs: the house, its lord and Jupiter, with the Sun added for the father.
Where BPHS names Venus in the 9th
BPHS Ch. 20 is the 9th house's own chapter, and it has three subjects: fortune, the father's condition, and ages. Venus appears in it three times, and each time as one condition among several.
- Sl. 3: a fortunate father if the 9th lord is strong, Venus is in the 9th, and Jupiter is in an angle from the Lagna. This is the only verse in the chapter that names Venus in the 9th outright. It needs all three.
- Sl. 26: abundant fortune if Venus is in deep exaltation with the 9th lord while Saturn is in the 3rd. Venus's deep exaltation is at 27 degrees of Pisces. With Venus in the 9th, that means Cancer rising, where the 9th lord is Jupiter.
- Sl. 5: a long-lived father if the 9th lord is in deep exaltation, Venus is in an angle, and Jupiter is in the 9th from the Navamsa Lagna. This one needs Venus in an angle, so it concerns a different placement.
The chapter's good verses carry one lesson: the 9th lord strong, Jupiter involved, the Lagna lord strong. Sl. 32, the last verse, says the effects are estimated from the state of the Lagna lord and the 9th lord. Fortune in this chapter is never read from the 9th alone, and Venus in the 9th never decides it by itself.
Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 70
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 70 (p. 104): "a spotless and broad physique, be endowed with wealth, charitable, wife, sexual pleasures and friendship and will honour Gods, guests and preceptors/elders". The verse joins the planet's subjects, wealth and the spouse, to the house's, religion and respect for elders. It carries no condition.
Saravali Ch. 32: the house of fortune's own method
Saravali's chapter on the 9th adds rules a Venus there can meet. Sl. 25 (p. 114): a strong benefic in the 9th "confers kingdom", with property, wealth, grains, righteousness and increased longevity. Sl. 29: a planet exalted in the 9th gives an excellent person with wealth, raised further by a benefic's aspect. Sl. 4: if the 9th is occupied or aspected by its own lord, fortune is made in one's own country; if other planets occupy or aspect it, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere". Sl. 2 adds that the 9th may be counted from the Ascendant or the Moon, the stronger prevailing.
Sl. 4 sorts Venus-in-the-9th charts in a way no other rule does. For Virgo and Aquarius rising Venus is the 9th lord in its own house, the "own country" case. For every other Lagna Venus is another planet occupying the 9th, the "elsewhere" case. The verse does not say elsewhere is worse; it says where fortune dawns.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 49-58
Sutras 49-58 (Bhrigu Sutras pp. 94-95, corpus line 3747), one of the longer Venus passages: religious minded, given to meditation and religious rites, auspicious marks on the feet, every comfort, children, and a long-lived father. With a malefic's company or aspect, the sutras speak of an early loss of the father; with a malefic, in a malefic's sign or debilitated, of loss of wealth, plus a line about the preceptor's household that the app's provenance comment records was dropped. With a benefic, or in its own or exaltation sign, high prosperity through Maharaja yoga; with the 4th or 7th lord, great fortune, conveyances, dress and ornaments. The commentator (p. 95) calls Venus in its own sign in the 9th, for Virgo and Aquarius rising, "very powerful Dhana yogas", and as 9th lord in the 9th "a distinguished Raja yoga".
This app wrote two lines from the chapter. Favourable: "genuine fortune and a long-lived father - capable of forming real Raja Yoga in its own sign, one of Venus' best placements". Testing: "reduced fortune and strain with father under affliction". Own sign in the 9th means Taurus or Libra, which happens only for Virgo and Aquarius rising, the two Lagnas where Venus is the 9th lord.

Your rising sign: Venus's sign and the houses it rules
With whole-sign houses, a Venus in the 9th is in the ninth sign from your Ascendant. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign. BPHS Ch. 24 has one sloka for each house lord placed in the 9th, and two apply to every row.
| Ascendant | Venus in | Natural dignity | Venus rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 9th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 2nd and 7th | Sl. 21: wealthy, diligent, visits shrines; Sl. 81: well disposed to the spouse, many undertakings |
| Taurus | Capricorn | Friendly (Saturn) | 1st and 6th | Sl. 9: fortunate, dear to people, skilful, eloquent; Sl. 69: fluctuating professional fortunes |
| Gemini | Aquarius | Friendly (Saturn) | 5th and 12th | Sl. 57: a prince or equal to one, an author, famous; Sl. 141: intent on own ends |
| Cancer | Pisces | Exalted | 4th and 11th | Sl. 45: dear to all, devout, every kind of happiness; Sl. 129: fortunate, truthful, affluent |
| Leo | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 3rd and 10th | Sl. 33: fortune through the spouse; Sl. 117: equal to a king, wealth |
| Virgo | Taurus | Own sign | 2nd and 9th | Sl. 21: wealthy, diligent; Sl. 105: abundant fortunes, virtues and beauty |
| Libra | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 1st and 8th | Sl. 9: fortunate, eloquent; Sl. 93: heterodox, takes others' wealth |
| Scorpio | Cancer | Enemy (Moon) | 7th and 12th | Sl. 81: many undertakings; Sl. 141: hostile even to friends |
| Sagittarius | Leo | Enemy (Sun) | 6th and 11th | Sl. 69: fluctuating fortunes; Sl. 129: fortunate, honoured, affluent |
| Capricorn | Virgo | Debilitated | 5th and 10th | Sl. 57: a prince or equal to one; Sl. 117: equal to a king |
| Aquarius | Libra | Moolatrikona 0-15 deg; own sign after | 4th and 9th | Sl. 45: devout, every kind of happiness; Sl. 105: abundant fortunes |
| Pisces | Scorpio | Neutral (Mars) | 3rd and 8th | Sl. 33: fortune through the spouse; Sl. 93: heterodox |
Three rows stand out. Aquarius rising is the strongest assembly in the sources: Venus in its own Libra as lord of the 9th and the 4th, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 41-42 call it the only planet that causes Raj Yoga for that Lagna, Ch. 20 Sl. 1 call the 9th lord strong in the 9th fortunate, and Ch. 24 Sl. 105 and Sl. 45 are both warm. Virgo rising is the same structure with the 2nd lordship in place of the 4th, and Ch. 34 Sl. 31-32 call Venus auspicious and a maraka at once. Capricorn rising is the split case: two of the warmest lordship slokas in the chapter, for a Venus debilitated in Virgo, which the Bhrigu Sutras say reverses the placement.
Cancer rising: Venus exalted, with Jupiter's sign as the 9th
For Cancer rising the 9th is Pisces, Venus is exalted there, and the 9th lord is Jupiter. Three classical rules come within reach. Ch. 20 Sl. 26 needs Venus in deep exaltation joined by the 9th lord, with Saturn in the 3rd; Venus here meets the first half if it is near 27 degrees and Jupiter is with it. Ch. 39 Sl. 39 forms a Raj Yoga, "royal status", when Jupiter is in its own sign in the 9th with Venus or the 5th lord; Jupiter with Venus in Pisces is that case. And Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 29 reads an exalted planet in the 9th as an excellent and wealthy person. All three point the same way; none is detected by name in the app.
Aries rising offers the other Ch. 39 case: the 9th is Sagittarius, Jupiter's own sign, and Jupiter there with Venus is again the Sl. 36-39 combination. The difference is dignity: Venus in Sagittarius is in a neutral's sign, and in this engine it reads Friendly or Enemy depending only on where Jupiter sits from it. With Jupiter beside it in the same sign, the temporary relation is enmity, and the engine reads Enemy sign. The combination BPHS names as a Raj Yoga is one the engine scores as a weak dignity.
Taurus and Libra rising: the exchange of Ch. 48
For these two Lagnas Venus is the Lagna lord in the 9th. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 9 read that as fortunate, dear to people, skilful and eloquent. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 add that if the 9th lord is in the Lagna while the Lagna lord is in the 9th, the dashas of both are extremely beneficial, and Ch. 20 Sl. 29 read the same exchange, with Jupiter in the 7th, as gains of wealth and conveyances. For Taurus rising the exchange needs Saturn in Taurus; for Libra rising, Mercury in Libra. The engine does not name either; its Parivarthana check, where it fires, is the place to look.
Two named yogas this placement cannot form
Two named combinations are built on the 9th lord, and for Venus in the 9th both are ruled out by their own wording. Khadg Yog, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 25-26, needs the 2nd and 9th lords to exchange signs. For Virgo rising Venus is both the 2nd and the 9th lord, so there is no second planet to exchange with. Lakshmi Yog, Ch. 36 Sl. 27-28, needs the 9th lord in an angle in its Moolatrikona, own or exaltation sign. For Virgo and Aquarius rising a Venus in the 9th is the 9th lord in its own sign, but the 9th is a trine, not an angle. The app detects neither by name; here the rules themselves exclude the placement.
BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 23-27 add a scale for the 9th lord read from how many divisional charts place it in good dignity, and every grade is religious: visiting holy places, sacrificial rites, truthfulness and mastery of the senses, asceticism, and at the top "a synonym of Dharma". For Virgo and Aquarius rising that scale applies to Venus. The app does not compute those grades.
Saravali's sign verses for the strongest cases
Saravali Ch. 28 describes Venus by sign, independent of house. For Taurus (Virgo rising): agriculture, scents, fine robes, charity, support of relatives, learning and a principal position. For Libra (Aquarius rising): hard-earned money, valour, fine dress, protection of one's own people and fortune, with a life abroad. For Pisces (Cancer rising): courtesy, liberality, great wealth, good speech, wisdom and a person who keeps promises. For Virgo (Capricorn rising): skill, sweet speech and several incomes, devoid of happiness and pleasures. Charity appears in the Taurus verse and in Saravali's 9th-house verse alike, and the Libra verse's life abroad sits beside Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4's fortune that dawns elsewhere, though for Aquarius rising Sl. 4 puts it at home.
How this app decides favourable or testing
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line for Venus in the 9th when Venus is Exalted, Moolatrikona, in its Own sign or in a Friendly sign. The 9th is never a dusthana, so dignity decides. For signs Venus neither owns nor is exalted or debilitated in, the engine combines Venus's natural relation to the sign lord with a temporary relation from your chart: a lord in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from Venus is a temporary friend.
- Always favourable: Virgo and Aquarius rising (own sign) and Cancer rising (exalted).
- Never favourable: Capricorn rising, Venus debilitated in Virgo.
- Favourable if Saturn or Mercury sits well from Venus: Taurus, Gemini and Libra rising; otherwise Neutral.
- Friendly or Enemy, decided by Mars or Jupiter: Aries, Leo and Pisces rising.
- At best Neutral: Scorpio and Sagittarius rising, with Venus in a sign of the Moon or the Sun.
In this app's engine run over 121,469 New Delhi charts from 1950 to 2049, 10,157 had Venus in the 9th, and 56.3 per cent printed the favourable line; Venus was exalted in 11.3 per cent and debilitated in 6.2. The engine does not check the 9th lord, Jupiter or the Lagna lord, which Ch. 20 treats as decisive, and it does not count the 9th from the Moon as Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2 allow. A testing line means only that Venus lacks dignity.
One more engine detail is specific to this house. The strength panel adds a note, "badhaka house (sensitive to affliction)", when a planet sits in the house the engine treats as badhaka for your rising sign's modality: the 11th for a movable sign, the 9th for a fixed one, the 7th for a dual one. So a Venus in the 9th carries that note for Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius rising. It is a reason line in the Shad Bala panel, not a change to the score. BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 20-21 do name a Badhak Bhava, but only the 11th for a movable sign, and inside the sign-dasha chapter; the fixed-sign 9th the engine uses is not stated there, so this page reports it only as what the code does.
The aspect: Venus looks at the 3rd
Venus has only its 7th-sign aspect, and from the 9th it falls on the 3rd house, the house of effort and siblings. The engine returns the 3rd. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 says a benefic joining or aspecting the 3rd gives co-born and courage, and a Venus in the 9th supplies that aspect in every chart. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 5 run the other way, reading a strong planet aspecting the 9th from the 3rd as great luck; that is the Venus in the 3rd house case, not this one. See the 3rd house for that house.
Strength and flags
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measure Venus's directional strength from the 10th, where it is nil. The 9th is next door, so a Venus in the 9th earns little: 0.67 of 4 in the worked chart below. Combustion zeroes the position score within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde; Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 exempt Venus from losing its rays when combust, and the engine does not. The Mild Kendradhipathya flag appears with Venus in the 9th for Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius rising; BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 13 override it for Capricorn and Aquarius, where Venus also owns a trine.
Timing
The Venus Mahadasha lasts twenty years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 describe the period of a Venus in its own or exaltation sign, an angle or a trine as one of clothes, ornaments, conveyances, land and recognition; a Venus in the 9th always meets the trine condition. Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give the 9th lord's own period "improvement in the educational sphere, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains of wealth", which the app shows as "growth in education, spirituality and unexpected gains" when Venus rules your 9th. Ch. 41 Sl. 16 add that the 5th and 9th lords, and planets joined with them, give wealth in their periods. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.
For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the Moon, and Venus crossing the 9th from the Moon is a favourable benefic position. That is also the count Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2 allow for the house of fortune, so on this house the two frames meet. The timing feature puts dasha and transit side by side.

| Strength | 12.29 of 20, Medium: position 10 (Moolatrikona); reasons include "badhaka house" and Rahu's aspect; direction 0.67 |
| Venus Mahadasha | 20 May 2018 to 20 May 2038 |
This is the Aquarius case. Venus is the 9th lord in its own sign in the 9th, so Ch. 20 Sl. 1 and Ch. 24 Sl. 105 both apply, and as 4th lord Ch. 24 Sl. 45 too. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 41-42 name Venus the Raj Yoga giver for this Lagna. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 now points two ways at once: the 9th is occupied by its own lord, the "own country" case, and also by Ketu, another planet, the "elsewhere" case.
Ketu matters for the Bhrigu condition too. The sutras reverse the placement when Venus is with a malefic, and this engine counts Ketu as one. The app's favourable line does not test that. Ch. 20 Sl. 3 asks for Jupiter in an angle, and Jupiter is in the 7th, an angle, so two of its three conditions are in place, with the 9th lord's strength, Venus itself, the third. And the Venus Mahadasha runs from age 14 to 34; Venus at 6.90 degrees is in its first decanate, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the early years of the period.
Saravali Ch. 32 has one more rule that bears on this chart. Sl. 26 read a debilitated, combust or malefic planet in the 9th with no benefic aspect as leaving the person without strength, wealth and fame, and Sl. 27 add that a malefic in the 9th that owns the house proves auspicious. Ketu owns no sign, so Sl. 27 cannot rescue it, and the engine records no benefic aspect on the 9th: Jupiter in the 7th aspects the 11th, 3rd and 1st, and the one aspect noted is Rahu's. Whether a benefic sitting in the same house, Venus here, answers Sl. 26's "without a benefics aspect" is not settled by the verse. The chart therefore holds one of the warmest and one of the hardest Saravali rules for this house at the same time.
Checking a Venus in the 9th in your own chart
- Confirm the placement with the birth chart calculator: Venus is in the 9th if it is in the ninth sign from your Ascendant.
- Find Venus's dignity and, for a non-dignified sign, where the sign's lord sits from Venus. Is a malefic with Venus?
- Find your 9th lord and Lagna lord, and Jupiter. Ch. 20 Sl. 3 asks for a strong 9th lord and Jupiter in an angle.
- For Cancer or Aries rising, is Jupiter with Venus in the 9th (Ch. 39 Sl. 39)? For Taurus or Libra rising, is the 9th lord in the Lagna (Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17)?
- Repeat the 9th-house check from the Moon, as Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2 allow.
- Look at the Navamsa (D9) and the Pitru Pada in the Bhava Padas calculator, and check strength in the Shad Bala calculator.
- Note when the Venus periods run, and keep transits separate.
The methodology page explains how positions are computed, and the sources page lists the books behind each reading.
Common misreadings
- "Venus in the 9th means a fortunate father." BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 3 needs a strong 9th lord and Jupiter in an angle as well. This app makes no statement about anyone's parent.
- "Venus is the significator of the 9th." BPHS Ch. 32 name Jupiter; Venus signifies the 7th.
- "Own-sign Venus in the 9th always forms a Raja Yoga." The app's line says it is capable of one. For Aquarius rising BPHS Ch. 34 call Venus the Raj Yoga giver; whether a named yoga forms depends on other planets.
- "A favourable line means the 9th is strong." The engine tests Venus's dignity only. Ch. 20 judges fortune through the 9th lord and the Lagna lord.
- "Fortune abroad is bad." Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 say only where fortune dawns, not whether it is good.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Venus in the 9th house good?
- All three sources read it favourably: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 70 gives wealth, charity and respect for elders; the Bhrigu Sutras give a religious mind, comfort and a long-lived father, reversed with a malefic or debilitated; BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 3 include Venus in the 9th in a rule for a fortunate father, with two other conditions.
- Does BPHS mention Venus in the 9th specifically?
- Yes. Ch. 20 Sl. 3 name Venus in the 9th, with a strong 9th lord and Jupiter in an angle, for a fortunate father, and Sl. 26 name Venus in deep exaltation with the 9th lord, with Saturn in the 3rd, for abundant fortune.
- For which rising signs is Venus the 9th lord?
- Virgo (Taurus as the 9th) and Aquarius (Libra as the 9th). In both, a Venus in the 9th is in its own sign, and BPHS Ch. 34 call it auspicious for both and the only Raj Yoga giver for Aquarius.
- What does Venus aspect from the 9th house?
- Only the 3rd house. BPHS Ch. 14 Sl. 1 count a benefic's aspect on the 3rd as giving co-born and courage.
- What is the "badhaka" note on my Venus in the 9th?
- The engine adds that reason line when a planet sits in the 9th for a fixed rising sign (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius). It does not change the strength score. BPHS Ch. 50 Sl. 20-21 give a Badhak rule only for movable signs, in the sign-dasha chapter.
- When does a Venus in the 9th show its effects?
- Classically in the Venus Mahadasha and Antardashas, with Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tying the timing to Venus's decanate. If Venus rules your 9th, the app adds the 9th lord's theme of education, spirituality and unexpected gains.
- Where can I read the neighbouring placements?
- See Venus in the 8th house and Venus in the 10th house.
