Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Mars in the 9th house: Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras on fortune and the father, the five rising signs for which the commentator says the harsh reading fails, Saravali's rule that a malefic owning the 9th is auspicious there, Raj Yogas by rising sign, and how this app grades it.

The 9th is the house of fortune, the father and religion, and the Bhrigu Sutras read Mars in it harshly: early loss of the father and little prosperity. Saravali calls the native unskilful, odious and very sinful, yet honoured by the king. Then comes the line that changes the reading for a large share of charts: the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator lists five dispositions, covering six rising signs, for which the harsh reading fails, because there Mars sits in the 9th as lord of the 1st, 5th or 9th.

The commentator's method runs through this whole house: ask what a planet owns before reading what it occupies. Saravali's chapter on the 9th says the same in its own words, and BPHS Ch. 34 calls Mars auspicious for every one of those five Ascendants. This page sets out the verses, the exceptions and the yogas, and how the app grades it. For the planet see Mars in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 9th house, Dharma Bhava.

Sources, and the father

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. Chamatkar Chintamani is reported only as the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator quotes it. The texts speak of a father's early loss; that is a classical reading with stated exceptions, not a statement about your father.

The house of fortune, and the most malefic planet

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10: fortunes, the wife's brother, religion, the brother's wife and visits to shrines. Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 add the father, read from the 9th and the 9th from the Sun. Saravali's Ch. 32 Sl. 1 calls it Bhagyasthana and says to analyse it first. The 9th is a trine and an Apoklima; BPHS Ch. 34 says the lord of a trine gives auspicious results and that the 9th is "specially for wealth". Jupiter is its fixed significator.

Mars is the most malefic of the natural malefics in BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, and Ch. 27 Sl. 30-31 deduct one Rupa of strength from any house it occupies. The same Ch. 34 then lets lordship undo the label: a trine lord gives auspicious results, and a planet owning an angle and a trine is a Yoga Karaka. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator applies exactly that test to Mars in the 9th. The 9th, a trine, is where that question is settled by lordship more than anywhere else.

What the verses say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 34

"If Mars occupies the 9th, the native will not be skillful in acts, be odious, will kill living beings, be not virtuous, be very sinful and honoured by the king" (p. 102), reported as the text's statement. Five deprivations and one honour; the honour is standing, which the house's courtly language often uses for fortune.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 72-74, and the commentator

The sutras (p. 57): "the native will suffer the loss of father in his early life. He will be unfortunate (no prosperity)", and if Mars is exalted or in its own sign, illicit relations with the wife of his preceptor. These are the text's statements. The commentator (p. 58) says the harsh reading "will not happen" in five dispositions: (1) Aries or Scorpio rising, Mars as Lagna lord; (2) Sagittarius rising, Mars as 5th lord; (3) Cancer rising, as 5th and 10th lord; (4) Leo rising, as 4th and 9th lord; (5) Pisces rising, as 2nd and 9th lord. The last three, he says, "give rise to a powerful Rajayoga". He doubts the preceptor clause for a dignified Mars unless Saturn, Rahu or Ketu join or aspect it, and his Note (p. 59) says Chamatkar Chintamani's beneficial results apply in those circumstances.

Five items, six signs: Aries and Scorpio make Mars the Lagna lord, Cancer and Sagittarius the 5th lord, Leo and Pisces the 9th lord. Read quickly, it looks like five signs; the commentator's own list names all six.

Mars beside the other planets in the 9th

Set each planet's Saravali verse beside its Bhrigu Sutras reading. Read down the column and Mars stands apart: it is the only planet given early loss of the father outright, and with Saturn the only one whose Saravali verse is plainly negative. Four planets, the Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus, are given a long-lived father by the sutras.

SaturnSl. 82: devoid of religious merit, little wealth, bereft of co-born and sons"Sinful", yet repairs religious buildings; long-lived father in own sign or exalted
Saravali Ch. 30 (pp. 100-104) and the Bhrigu Sutras (pp. 27, 41, 57, 70, 82, 94, 105), checked against the corpus and abridged. Statements about the father are the texts', not forecasts.

The pattern of exceptions differs too. The Sun, Venus and Saturn have their reversals stated inside the sutras, by dignity or company. Mars's reversal is not in the sutras at all; it comes from the commentator, and it runs on lordship rather than dignity. That is why this page keeps the commentator's list and the app's dignity test in separate columns: the classical exception and the engine's condition are answering different questions.

The 9th's own significations also frame what Mars is said to strain or serve here: BPHS gives fortune, religion, the father and visits to shrines; Saravali makes it Bhagyasthana, judged from the Ascendant or the Moon; the modern commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras widens it to faith, philosophy, the preceptor, higher education, long journeys and grandchildren. None of the three texts connects Mars to any one of these beyond the father and fortune that the verses name, and this page does not add a connection of its own.

Saravali's rules for the house of fortune

Saravali Ch. 32's rules for the house (p. 114) are written for any planet in the 9th, and three apply to Mars directly. Sl. 41-44 (p. 115) also read Mars joined by others in the 9th: with Mercury, a chief of men, fortunate; with Jupiter, wealth and honour but sickness and bodily wounds; with Venus, living abroad, argumentative and cruel; with Saturn, sinful and deprived of wealth and happiness.

  • Sl. 26: a debilitated or combust planet, or a malefic, in the 9th without a benefic aspect leaves the person "devoid of (moral) strength, wealth and fame". Mars is a malefic, so this is the default without a benefic aspect.
  • Sl. 27: "If the malefic in the 9th is the owner of that House, then it proves auspicious", more so with a benefic's aspect. Mars owns the 9th for Leo rising (Aries) and Pisces rising (Scorpio), both its own signs in the 9th.
  • Sl. 29: a planet exalted in the 9th gives an excellent person with wealth and gold, and a supreme ruler if a benefic aspects it. Mars is exalted in Capricorn, the 9th for Taurus rising.

Saravali's method verses add two counts. Sl. 2: the house of fortune is the 9th from the Ascendant or the Moon, the stronger prevailing. Sl. 4: a 9th occupied or aspected by its own lord makes fortune "in his own country"; occupied or aspected by other planets, "the dawn of fortune will be elsewhere". For Leo and Pisces rising, Mars is the 9th's own lord.

The father

BPHS reads the father from the 9th and from the 9th counted from the Sun (Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43), and also puts the father in the 10th (Ch. 11 Sl. 11). Ch. 20, the 9th-house chapter, has father verses built on the 9th lord, Venus, Jupiter and the Sun. One names Mars: Sl. 4, a poor father if the 9th lord is debilitated while Mars occupies the 2nd or 4th from the 9th. That is Mars in the 10th or the 12th house, not the 9th; a Mars in the 9th does not meet it.

The Bhrigu Sutras' "loss of father in his early life" is therefore the one father statement in the three texts for Mars in the 9th, and the commentator withdraws it for six Ascendants by lordship. Because BPHS reads the father from two counts, a Mars in the 9th from the Ascendant is only half of the classical question: the 9th from the Sun may hold a different planet or none, and Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 2 adds a count from the Moon for fortune. The texts give a tie-break only for fortune (the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon prevails), not for the father, and this page does not invent one. BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 13-25 give ages for a father's death under other combinations; this page names them without reproducing them, and this app computes none.

Two lordships for every rising sign

Mars is in your 9th when it occupies the ninth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 9th, and most of the twelve lords-in-the-9th verses are good, unusually for Ch. 24.

One Ch. 24 row repeats the Bhrigu Sutras' father theme by lordship: Sl. 33, the 3rd lord in the 9th, "will lack paternal bliss" (Virgo, Aquarius rising). Sl. 93 and Sl. 141 (the 8th and 12th lords) are the harsh rows. Mars's Ch. 34 roles line up with the commentator's list: auspicious for Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius and Pisces, helpful despite the 8th for Aries, neutral for Scorpio.

Raj Yogas through Mars in the 9th

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 make a yoga from an angle lord and a trine lord joined, exchanged or in full mutual aspect, and Sl. 13 call a planet owning an angle and a trine specially a Yoga Karaka. This app's yogas calculator flags Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga when the 9th and 10th lords share an angle or trine, Raja Yoga when the 5th and 9th lords share a house, and the general Kendra-Kona yoga.

  • Pisces rising: Mars is the 9th lord in Scorpio, and Ch. 34 names a yoga of Mars with Jupiter, the 10th lord, for this Ascendant. Jupiter joining Mars in the 9th is Dharma-Karmadhipati in a trine.
  • Leo rising: Mars rules the 4th and 9th, an angle and a trine, in its own sign in the 9th. Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 say only "auspicious" for Leo, while the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator counts Leo among the dispositions that "give rise to a powerful Rajayoga" (p. 58).
  • Cancer rising: Mars, the Yoga Karaka (5th and 10th lord), in the 9th joined by Jupiter, the 9th lord, is the 9th and 10th lords together and the 5th and 9th lords together in one move.
  • Sagittarius rising: Mars is the 5th lord in Leo, the 9th; with the Sun, the 9th lord, it is the app's 5th-and-9th Raja Yoga.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 15 limits these: an angle or trine lord that also owns an evil house does not cause a Raj Yoga by relationship alone, a caution for Sagittarius (Mars owns the 12th too) and Capricorn rising. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mars's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 9th is a trine, so dignity alone decides. The app does not take the plain sutra as final either; it is the commentator's lordship rule that it does not apply.

  • Always favourable: Leo and Pisces rising (own sign) and Taurus rising (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Scorpio rising (debilitated in Cancer, though one of the commentator's exceptions), Libra and Capricorn rising (Mercury's signs, Neutral at best).
  • Favourable when the 9th lord sits in a temporary-friend position from Mars: Aries, Cancer and Sagittarius rising (otherwise Neutral) and Gemini, Virgo and Aquarius rising (otherwise Enemy sign).

So the app's line and the commentator's list overlap but are not the same: Taurus rising gets the favourable line without being on the list, and Scorpio rising is on the list but never gets it. dashaQuality() is stricter still: good only for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign. The Mars Mahadasha page covers the period.

Strength and aspects

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures Mars from the 4th; the 9th is one house short of the 10th, where Mars's directional strength peaks, about five-sixths of the maximum in this engine's even steps. As an Apoklima the 9th gives a quarter of Kendradi Bal. The Shad Bala calculator shows all components.

From the 9th, aspectedHouses('mars', 9) returns [3, 12, 4]: the 3rd by the 7th aspect, the 12th and 4th by Mars's special aspects. The 3rd is the other house Mars signifies; the 4th is where its directional strength is zero. The engine counts all three as malefic aspects; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for them. See the 3rd house.

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 1-24, Mars by sign (pp. 76-78): Capricorn (Taurus rising) wealthy, famous, a protector; Aries (Leo rising) truthful, valorous, fierce; Scorpio (Pisces rising) skilful, endowed with land, highly sinful; Cancer (Scorpio rising) deformed, sick, repeatedly anguished; Sagittarius (Aries rising) many wounds, a warrior, happy with hard work; Gemini (Libra rising) very learned, fond of foreign travel. Saravali Ch. 15: Mars with the Sun valorous, dull-witted and a liar (Sl. 3); with Jupiter intelligent and expert in speech (Sl. 14).

Timing

Mars has 7 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 27-32 give a strong Mars a dasha of position, wealth and land; Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 say a planet in a trine at the start of its dasha gives favourable results. For Leo and Pisces rising Mars is also the 9th lord, and Ch. 48 gives that dasha "improvement in the educational sphere, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains of wealth"; this app words it "growth in education, spirituality and unexpected gains". Ch. 41 Sl. 16 adds that the 9th and 5th lords give wealth in their dashas. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.

Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts Mars from your natal Moon; the 9th from the Moon is unremarkable for a malefic in the engine's rules.

Every lordship rule above points one way here. Mars is the 9th lord in its own sign in the 9th: Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27 (a malefic owner proves auspicious), the commentator's exception, BPHS Ch. 20 Sl. 1 ("fortunate if Dharm's Lord is in Dharm Bhava with strength") and Ch. 24 Sl. 105. Jupiter, the 5th lord, sits with Mars, the 9th lord, which the engine reports as its 5th-and-9th Raja Yoga; the Sun, the Lagna lord, joins them. Jupiter is only 0.05 degrees into Aries, so that company depends on a twentieth of a degree.

The other readings. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 points both ways: the 9th's own lord occupies it, and other planets do too. The father's second count, the 9th from the Sun, is Sagittarius, the 5th house, where Rahu sits. Mars aspects Libra (3rd), Cancer (12th, the Moon) and Scorpio (4th). The engine's strength note also calls the 9th a "badhaka house (sensitive to affliction)" for this chart; no page on this site explains that label, so this page reports it and does not interpret it. The page lists these and does not net them. The chart's Vimshottari sequence opens in Saturn's period, so Mars's own seven years arrive only later in the sequence.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Mars is in the ninth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Does Mars rule your 1st, 5th or 9th? That is the commentator's exception.
  3. Does Mars own the 9th (Leo, Pisces rising) or sit exalted there (Taurus rising)? Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27 and 29.
  4. Without either, does a benefic aspect the 9th? Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 26.
  5. Find the 9th lord (the lord of Mars's sign) and the Lagna lord, as BPHS Ch. 20 asks.
  6. Look for the 5th or 10th lord with Mars for the Raj Yogas.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

Over-readings

  • "Mars in the 9th means losing the father early." The Bhrigu Sutras say so, and their commentator withdraws it wherever Mars rules the 1st, 5th or 9th; this app computes no father's longevity.
  • "A malefic in the 9th ruins fortune." Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27 says a malefic that owns the 9th proves auspicious.
  • "The app's favourable line means the commentator's exception applies." The line reads dignity; the exception reads lordship.
  • "Mars in the 9th is a Raj Yoga." It is one ingredient; the yogas need a partner lord.
  • "Exalted Mars in the 9th is the commentator's exception." Taurus rising makes Mars the 7th and 12th lord, not on his list; its support comes instead from Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 29 on an exalted planet in the 9th.
  • "Debilitated Mars in the 9th cancels the exception." For Scorpio rising Mars is still the Lagna lord, so by the commentator's rule it remains an exception; the app's testing line reflects dignity only. The two readings are reported side by side, not reconciled.
  • "The engine's Strong Shad Bala settles it." The score weighs strength; it does not apply the Bhrigu Sutras, the commentator or Saravali Ch. 32.
  • "The 9th from my Moon in transit is my 9th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about Mars in the 9th

Is Mars in the 9th house bad?
The verses are harsh: Saravali gives an unskilful, odious, sinful native honoured by the king; the Bhrigu Sutras early loss of the father and little prosperity. The commentator says the harsh reading fails where Mars rules the 1st, 5th or 9th.
Which rising signs does the commentator exempt?
By the commentator's five dispositions (Bhrigu Sutras p. 58): Aries and Scorpio (Lagna lord), Sagittarius (5th lord), Cancer (5th and 10th lord), Leo (4th and 9th lord) and Pisces (2nd and 9th lord), six signs in all.
What does Mars aspect from the 9th?
The 3rd, 12th and 4th houses. The engine counts all three as malefic aspects.
Can Mars in the 9th form a Raja Yoga?
With a partner lord: Jupiter for Pisces rising, the Moon for Cancer rising (Mars as Yoga Karaka), the 5th lord Jupiter for Leo rising, the Sun for Sagittarius rising. The app flags these when the lords share a house.
Why is my Mars in the 9th marked testing?
Its dignity is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Scorpio rising, where Mars is debilitated in Cancer, always gets the testing line though it is one of the commentator's exceptions.
Is Mars in the 9th worse than Saturn in the 9th?
The verses are harsh for both. Saturn's sutras give a long-lived father when it is in its own sign or exalted; Mars's sutras carry no such clause, and its reversal comes from the commentator's lordship rule. Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 27 applies to both when they own the 9th.
Does Mars in the 9th mean fortune abroad?
Saravali Ch. 32 Sl. 4 says fortune dawns elsewhere when planets other than the 9th lord occupy or aspect the 9th, and in one's own country when its own lord does. Mars is the 9th's own lord only for Leo and Pisces rising.
Is a Mars dasha good with this placement?
For Leo and Pisces rising it is also the 9th lord's dasha, which BPHS Ch. 48 reads as education, religious-mindedness and unexpected gains. This app grades it by dignity and house.
