Mars in the 10th house is the placement on which the classical sources sound most alike. The Bhrigu Sutras call the native acclaimed by the people, fortunate and prosperous; Saravali calls him proficient, valorous and happy. And the strength tables agree with the readings: the 10th is the one house where Mars has full directional strength. The texts still attach conditions, and those conditions are the substance of this page.
What follows sets out the verses, the strength rule, the yoga that forms here, what Mars owns from each rising sign when it sits in the 10th, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mars in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 10th house, Karma Bhava.
Sources, and the word "king"
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The texts were written for courts; where they say a native is installed as king or honoured by the king, this page reports the words and reads them as rank and recognition from an employer, an institution or a government. Nothing here is a forecast about your career.
The house of deeds, and the planet of strength
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives the house authority, place, profession or livelihood, honour, the father, living in foreign lands and debts. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-27) names it Karma and Mana, action and standing. Ch. 21, the house's own chapter, reads it almost entirely in terms of deeds: whether a person's work is good, obstructed or absent, and whether fame follows. It names no professions.
Mars, in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13, is "one's strength", and Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 make it the most malefic of the natural malefics. The 10th is a Kendra and an Upachaya, and Mars reads well in all four Upachaya houses (3rd, 6th, 10th, 11th) in both the Bhrigu Sutras and Saravali Ch. 30, where, as the sutras' commentator puts it, "malefics give good results". Of those four, the 10th is the only one that is also an angle, and the only one where Mars's directional strength peaks. That combination is why this placement is read so differently from Mars in the other three angles.
BPHS also singles the 10th out among the angles. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say that within each group of houses significance rises in ascending order, so among the Kendras the 10th counts most. Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 says planets in mutual angles in their own, exalted or friendly signs become Yoga Karakas, and adds that in Karma Bhava a graha will be significantly so. A Mars that is both dignified and in the 10th is the case that sentence is written for.
What the verses say
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 75-85
The sutras (p. 59): acclaimed by the people; with a strong 10th lord, long-lived brothers; particularly fortunate and prosperous, interested in meditation, devoted to his preceptor. With a malefic, obstructions in the professional career. With a benefic or in a benefic's house, success, fame and respect, earning from the 18th year, a stout body, "but he may have mentality of a thief". In a malefic's house or with a malefic, a life full of obstructions and sinful deeds. With the 9th or 10th lord, "installed as a king or heir apparent". With Jupiter, elephants (conveyances), glory and lands. The commentator calls these "logical and to the point" and explains Sutra 76's brothers by Mars being their karaka. The sutra is unusual among Mars's twelve house readings in starting from a good result and making the malefic the exception, rather than the other way round.
This is the sutras' pattern for the whole house: almost every planet is read well there, and almost every sutra adds that a malefic's company turns the result into obstruction. Mars is not singled out as the problem occupant. That role, in the sutras and in Saravali, goes to Saturn.
Saravali, from the Ascendant and from the Moon
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 35 (p. 102): "proficient in his acts, be valorous, unconquerable, will serve important people, be endowed with sons and happiness and be very courageous". No condition is stated in the verse. Saravali also has a chapter on the 10th counted from the Moon (Ch. 33), and its Sl. 2 says the Karmasthana is the 10th from the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon. Its reading for Mars in the 10th from the Moon (Sl. 8-13, p. 120) is valorous deeds, life in foreign places, longing for sensual enjoyment and cruelty, with a closing clause on conduct framed in caste terms that this page does not repeat. Ch. 33 Sl. 81 (p. 125) adds that Mars in the 10th indicates income through enemies.
| Source | Reading | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Bhrigu Sutras 75-85 | Acclaimed by the people, fortunate, prosperous | With a benefic: success, fame, respect |
| Bhrigu Sutras 75-85 | Installed as king or heir apparent | With the 9th or 10th lord |
| Bhrigu Sutras 75-85 | Obstruction; sinful deeds | With a malefic, or in a malefic's house |
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 35 | Proficient, valorous, unconquerable, serves important people, sons and happiness | None in the verse |
| Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 8-13 | Valorous deeds, life in foreign places, cruel | Mars in the 10th from the Moon |
| Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 81 | Income through enemies | Mars in the 10th |
| This app, phMars10F | Real career strength and public recognition; Mars classically powerful here | Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly sign |
| This app, phMars10U | Obstacles and friction in professional life | Any other dignity |
The two Saravali readings are not two views of one placement. A Mars in your 10th from the Lagna and a Mars in your 10th from the Moon coincide only when the Moon is in the Lagna sign. Saravali's own rule is to read the house from whichever of the two is stronger; Ch. 33 gives no method for deciding which is stronger, and this page does not supply one.
Mars beside the other planets in the 10th
Read against its neighbours in the Bhrigu Sutras, Mars is one of six planets the sutras read well here. What distinguishes Mars is the type of condition attached, not the verdict.
| Planet in the 10th | Bhrigu Sutras reading | The stated condition |
|---|---|---|
| Sun (88-95) | Distinction in education, fame, capability | Exalted or in Leo: powerful, famous; with a malefic: career obstructions |
| Moon (54-60) | High attainment, pious deeds, fame | A strong 10th lord: highly virtuous; with a malefic: obstacles |
| Mars (75-85) | Acclaimed, fortunate, prosperous | With the 9th or 10th lord: king or heir; with a malefic: obstruction |
| Mercury (67-70) | Success through virtuous deeds, wide reputation | Enemy sign or with a malefic: the reverse |
| Jupiter (46-49) | Righteous deeds, wide reputation | 10th lord with a malefic: obstacles |
| Venus (59-61) | "Full of glory" | With a malefic: obstacles in undertakings |
| Saturn (44-45) | Little is promised | With a benefic: success; with a malefic: career obstacles |
Mars is the only planet whose sutra names a lordship partner, the 9th or 10th lord, as the route to its best result. That turns the reading into a lordship question, which is how the commentator reads the house: he names Mars in its own sign in the 10th as a powerful Rajayoga, "the same" for Mars in Taurus (Leo rising) or Sagittarius (Pisces rising) as the 9th lord in the 10th (p. 59). The Sun shares Mars's directional peak but its condition is dignity (exalted or in Leo); Mercury's is an enemy sign. Mars alone is conditioned by company of a particular rank.
Directional strength: the one house of full Dig Bala
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures the Sun and Mars from the 4th house, so their directional strength is zero there and full at the opposite point, the 10th. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38 makes Mars strong in the South, which Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35 states as directional strength in the 10th. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary applies it directly: "Mars will give good effects in the 10th as he gets directional strength in that house" (p. 59).
This engine gives Mars 4 of 4 directional points in the 10th and 0 in the 4th, falling off evenly by whole house in between; the step-by-house interpolation is the app's own simplification where BPHS measures in degrees. It is one of six components in the app's 20-point Shad Bala, so a Mars in the 10th starts four points up on a Mars in the 4th before dignity is counted. The Shad Bala calculator shows each component. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 32-33 sets Mars's full requirement at 300 Virupas, the lowest of the seven, but that figure belongs to BPHS's full computation and cannot be compared with the app's scale.
One caution matters here: directional strength is a measure of strength, not of meaning. The Moon and Venus have their least directional strength in the 10th and the sutras still read both well there. A Mars in the 10th in its sign of fall has full directional strength and the lowest position score at once, and the engine reports both rather than netting them.
Ruchaka Yoga, and the angle without Mangal Dosha
BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Ruchaka Yoga when Mars is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle from the Lagna. In the 10th that happens for three rising signs only: Aries (Mars exalted in Capricorn), Cancer (Mars in Aries, its Moolatrikona to 12 degrees) and Aquarius (Mars in Scorpio). The app keeps only the temperament line for it, "energetic and decisive, drawn to challenge, leads through courage and directness", and the yogas calculator lists it when present.
There is an awkward overlap: three of Ruchaka's four angles, the 1st, 4th and 7th, are also houses in this engine's Mangal Dosha check (1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12), and three quarters of the Ruchaka charts in this app's 20,000-chart sample also carried the dosha. The 10th is the fourth angle, and it is not on the list. So a Ruchaka Yoga formed in the 10th is the only Ruchaka this engine never pairs with Mangal Dosha from Mars's own house. The Mangal Dosha calculator will not flag Mars in the 10th, and Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not sets out the rule.
BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47, the narrower classical rule, names the 12th, 4th, 7th and 8th. The 10th is not there either. Mars in the 10th does aspect the 4th, by its 7th aspect, but neither the classical rule nor the engine's check is phrased in terms of Mars's aspects, and this page does not extend them.
What Mars owns, from each rising sign
Mars is in your 10th when it occupies the tenth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a sloka for each house lord placed in the 10th, and this is Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 at work: a lord placed in Karma Bhava supports the house it rules. Mars always rules two houses, so each Lagna gets two of those slokas at once.
| Ascendant | Mars's sign | Natural dignity | Mars rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 10th | BPHS Ch. 34 on Mars |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Capricorn | Exalted | 1st, 8th | Sl. 10: paternal happiness, royal honour, fame, self-earned wealth. Sl. 94: devoid of paternal bliss, a talebearer, no livelihood; not maturing with a benefic aspect | Helpful despite the 8th |
| Taurus | Aquarius | Neutral | 7th, 12th | Sl. 82: a disobedient wife; religious, wealth and sons. Sl. 142: expenditure through royal persons, moderate paternal bliss | A maraka |
| Gemini | Pisces | Friendly | 6th, 11th | Sl. 70: known among his men, not respectful to his father, happy abroad. Sl. 130: honoured by the king, truthful | Malefic |
| Cancer | Aries | Moolatrikona to 12 deg, then own | 5th, 10th | Sl. 58: a Raj Yog and great fame. Sl. 118: skilful in all jobs, valorous | Auspicious; a full Yoga by itself |
| Leo | Taurus | Neutral | 4th, 9th | Sl. 46: royal honours. Sl. 106: a king or equal, a minister or army chief | Auspicious |
| Virgo | Gemini | Enemy | 3rd, 8th | Sl. 34: all kinds of happiness, self-made wealth, nurtures wicked females. Sl. 94: no livelihood, unless a benefic aspects | Malefic |
| Libra | Cancer | Debilitated | 2nd, 7th | Sl. 22: libidinous, honourable, learned, many wives and much wealth, bereft of filial happiness. Sl. 82: a disobedient wife; religious, wealth, sons | Malefic and a maraka |
| Scorpio | Leo | Friendly | 1st, 6th | Sl. 10: royal honour, self-earned wealth. Sl. 70: not respectful to his father, happy abroad | Neutral |
| Sagittarius | Virgo | Enemy | 5th, 12th | Sl. 58: a Raj Yog. Sl. 142: expenditure through royal persons | Auspicious |
| Capricorn | Libra | Neutral | 4th, 11th | Sl. 46: royal honours, an alchemist. Sl. 130: honoured by the king | Malefic |
| Aquarius | Scorpio | Own | 3rd, 10th | Sl. 34: self-made wealth, nurtures wicked females. Sl. 118: skilful in all jobs | Malefic and a maraka |
| Pisces | Sagittarius | Friendly | 2nd, 9th | Sl. 22: honourable, wealthy, many wives, bereft of filial happiness. Sl. 106: a king or equal | Auspicious; a Yoga with Jupiter |
Read down the Ch. 24 column and most rows are good for career: the 8th and 12th lords harm the house, several rows carry a clause on the father or the wife, and the 8th lord's harm is cancelled by a benefic aspect. Read down the dignity column and the picture is uneven: exalted for Aries, own sign for Cancer and Aquarius, debilitated for Libra, an enemy's sign for Virgo and Sagittarius. The two columns answer different questions, what Mars carries into the house and how comfortable it is there, and the texts ask for both.
The 10th lord in the 10th: Cancer and Aquarius rising
For these two Lagnas Mars is the 10th lord in its own sign in the 10th, which brings three rules into play together. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 2, the opening rule of the house chapter: a strong 10th lord, exalted or in its own sign or Navamsa, gives paternal happiness, fame and good deeds. Ch. 24 Sl. 118: skilful in all jobs, valorous, truthful, devoted to elders. And Ch. 46 Sl. 35-36 make Chaturashiti-sama Dasha appropriate exactly where the 10th lord is placed in the 10th.
There is a fourth. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 21 gives a Raj Yog when the 10th lord is in its own house or exaltation sign and aspects the Lagna. From the 10th, this engine's aspectedHouses() returns the 4th, the 1st and the 5th for Mars: its special 4th-place aspect falls on the Lagna. So a Mars in Aries for Cancer rising, or in Scorpio for Aquarius rising, meets that sloka as worded. The engine's code comment says Ch. 39's general Raj Yoga rules are deliberately not coded, so this one will not appear in the yogas list; the alternate dashas calculator does report whether the Chaturashiti-sama condition is met.
The two Lagnas are not equal in BPHS Ch. 34. For Cancer, Mars owns the 5th and 10th, a trine and an angle, and Sl. 27-28 say it can confer a full-fledged Yoga by itself; this app lists it as the Yoga Karaka. For Aquarius, Mars owns the 3rd and 10th, and Ch. 34 calls it malefic and a maraka. Sl. 14 explains the difference: a malefic owning a Kendra becomes auspicious only when it also owns a Kona, not by merely owning the Kendra.
The 9th lord in the 10th: Leo and Pisces rising
These are the commentator's examples. For Leo rising Mars owns the 4th and 9th, an angle and a trine, and sits in Taurus; for Pisces rising it owns the 2nd and 9th and sits in Sagittarius. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 106 reads the 9th lord in the 10th as a king or equal to one, a minister or army chief, virtuous and dear to all; the reverse placement, the 10th lord in the 9th (Sl. 117), is the strongest of its set because a Kendra lord in a Kona forms by itself the link of Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12. The same reasoning runs the other way for a Kona lord in a Kendra.
The sutra's royal-rank condition, Mars with the 9th or 10th lord, then becomes a question of who else is in the 10th. For Pisces rising the 10th lord is Jupiter, and Ch. 34 Sl. 43-44 say "Mangal and Guru will cause a Yog" for this Ascendant. For Leo rising the 10th lord is Venus, which also owns the 3rd. Ch. 34 Sl. 29-30 caution for Leo that Jupiter joining Venus "will not produce auspicious results", and Sl. 15 says a Kendra or Kona lord that also owns an evil house does not cause a Raj Yog by mere relationship. BPHS gives no Leo-specific verdict on Mars with Venus, and this page does not supply one.
Raj Yogas the app checks
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 11-12 make a yoga from an angle lord and a trine lord joined, exchanged or in full mutual aspect, and the 9th and 10th lords are the strongest such pair (Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7, significance rising in ascending order). This app flags Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga when those two lords share a house that is an angle or a trine, and a separate Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga for a conjunction or mutual aspect between any angle lord and any trine lord. With Mars in the 10th, the Dharma-Karmadhipati case arises when the partner joins it there:
- Pisces rising: Mars (9th lord) in Sagittarius with Jupiter (10th lord). Ch. 34 names this pair for Pisces.
- Cancer rising: Mars (10th lord, and Yoga Karaka) in Aries with Jupiter (9th lord).
- Aquarius rising: Mars (10th lord) in Scorpio with Venus (9th lord, which Ch. 34 Sl. 41-42 make "the only Grah, that causes Raj Yog" for Aquarius).
- Leo rising: Mars (9th lord) in Taurus with Venus (10th lord), subject to the Sl. 15 caution above, since Venus also owns the 3rd.
- Sagittarius rising is a different yoga: Mars (5th lord) in Virgo with the Sun (9th lord) is the app's separate 5th-and-9th Raja Yoga, subject to the same Sl. 15 caution, since Mars also owns the 12th.
Each of these needs a second planet in a particular place, so none follows from Mars in the 10th alone. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one when it does appear. Amala Yoga, the other 10th-house combination the app checks, needs an unafflicted benefic in the 10th; the app's version excludes it when a malefic joins, so a Mars in the 10th blocks Amala from the Lagna for any benefic sharing its sign.
Strength and aspects
From the 10th, aspectedHouses('mars', 10) returns [4, 1, 5]. The 7th aspect falls on the 4th, the house where Mars's directional strength is zero; the special 4th-place aspect falls on the Lagna; the special 8th-place aspect falls on the 5th. The engine counts all three as malefic aspects in the Shad Bala of any planet sitting there. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for these aspects, and this page does not invent one beyond the Ch. 39 Sl. 21 wording above. See
the pages on the 4th house, the 1st house and the 5th house for what each signifies. Turned round, Mars in the 10th is aspected by any planet in the 4th, by Jupiter from the 6th or 2nd (5th or 9th sign back from Mars), and by Saturn from the 7th or 1st.
Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 1-24, Mars by sign (pp. 76-78), gives the sign-temperament layer for each Lagna. The two strongest 10th-house cases read well: Capricorn (Aries rising) wealthy, happy, famous, an Army chief or a king, a protector; Aries (Cancer rising) truthful, valorous, an Army chief or head of a village, fierce. Scorpio (Aquarius rising) is attached to trade and endowed with land, but also called a leader of thieves, highly sinful and troubled by poison, fire, weapons and wounds, as the text's statements. Cancer (Libra rising), the sign of fall, is deformed, sick and repeatedly anguished; Gemini (Virgo rising) very learned and fond of foreign travel; Virgo (Sagittarius rising) honoured but never rich.
Saravali Ch. 15's pairs matter here because the sutra turns on company: Mars with the Sun, valorous, dull-witted, a liar and fierce (Sl. 3); with the Moon, brave in war, an artisan, with "bloody imbalances" (Sl. 8); with Jupiter, intelligent and expert in speech (Sl. 14); with Saturn, a metallurgist, deceitful and fond of quarrels (Sl. 16). The Sun and Saturn are malefics, so either one in the 10th with Mars is the sutra's obstruction case; Jupiter is the benefic case, and the Pisces-rising yoga case too.
One BPHS sloka in the house chapter touches Mars outside the 10th but bears on reading it. Ch. 21 Sl. 11 gives cessation of duties when Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars are in the 11th, and Sl. 5 reads malefics in both the 10th and 11th as "only bad deeds", as the text's statement. Mars in the 10th is the first half of that second condition; the 11th has to be checked before the sutra's good reading is taken as it stands.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line, "real career strength and public recognition - Mars is classically powerful in this house", when Mars's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 10th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. Otherwise it prints "obstacles and friction in professional life". In this working tree the dignity function is called with the chart, so the friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56: whether the lord of Mars's sign sits 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Mars.
- Always favourable: Aries rising (exalted), Cancer rising (Moolatrikona or own) and Aquarius rising (own).
- Never favourable: Libra rising (debilitated in Cancer), and Virgo and Sagittarius rising, where Mars is in Mercury's signs; the engine ran Neutral at best for them, with the sign lord in a temporary-friend position.
- Favourable only with the sign lord in a temporary-friend position: Gemini, Scorpio and Pisces rising (otherwise Neutral), and Taurus, Leo and Capricorn rising (otherwise Enemy sign).
So the line and the sutra measure different things. The sutra conditions the result on company and on the 9th and 10th lords; the line conditions it on dignity. A Leo-rising Mars, the commentator's 9th lord in the 10th, gets the testing line unless Venus sits in a temporary-friend position from it. dashaQuality() is stricter still: good only for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign, neutral for friendly or neutral, challenging for enemy sign or fall. The Mars Mahadasha page covers the period.
Timing
Mars has 7 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 27-32 list the strong conditions first, and a Kendra is one of them; with exaltation, Moolatrikona or own sign and benefic association the results named are a high position, gain of wealth and land, and recognition by government. Mars in the 10th meets the Kendra condition for every Lagna; the dignity conditions belong to Aries, Cancer and Aquarius rising.
For Cancer and Aquarius rising, Mars's period is also the 10th lord's. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 1 uses the 10th lord as its worked example: favourable when it is exalted or similar in an auspicious house, adverse when debilitated in an inauspicious one. Sl. 5-8 give the 10th lord's dasha recognition from and awards by the government, which this app words as "career recognition and advancement, often with public or institutional backing". For Leo and Pisces rising it is the 9th lord's, which the app words as "growth in education, spirituality and unexpected gains". Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 add that the dasha of a planet joined to an angle lord placed in a trine, or a trine lord placed in an angle, is favourable.
Inside the period, Ch. 54 Sl. 1-4 give Mars's own sub-period gains through the favour of authority when Mars is in a Kendra, with house and land added when it is exalted or in its own sign or Navamsa. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time results by decanate: a Mars in the first ten degrees of its sign shows early in the period, the last ten late, reversed if retrograde. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates, and Antardasha and Pratyantar explains the sub-periods.
For transits, the Gochar calculator counts Mars from your natal Moon. By the rule the engine takes from Kannan, a malefic is good in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon, testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th, and unremarked elsewhere. The 10th from the Moon falls in the unremarked group, so a natal Mars in the 10th says nothing about Mars's transit there.

Most of the dignity and lordship rules above point the same way. Mars is the 10th lord in its own sign in the 10th, which is BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 2 and Ch. 24 Sl. 118; it is the Yoga Karaka of Ch. 34 Sl. 27-28; it forms Ruchaka; it has full directional strength; and it aspects the Lagna, the wording of Ch. 39 Sl. 21. The 10th lord in the 10th also meets the Chaturashiti-sama condition. No Mangal Dosha follows from Mars's house.
The sutra's conditions read less cleanly. Jupiter aspects Mars from Leo, a benefic aspect, which is the sutra's success-and-fame case. Rahu shares Aries, and Ketu aspects it from the 4th; the engine counts both nodes among its malefics, which is the sutra's obstruction case. Jupiter is also the 9th lord for Cancer rising, but it aspects Mars rather than joining it, and the sutra says "associated with". The page lists these and does not net them. The Vimshottari sequence opens in Jupiter and runs Saturn to 2027, so Mars's own seven years come late in this chart.
Your own chart
- Confirm Mars is in the tenth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Read its dignity from the table above, and check where the lord of its sign sits if it is in a friend's or neutral sign.
- Find what Mars rules and read both Ch. 24 slokas for those lords in the 10th.
- List who shares the 10th: a benefic is the sutra's success case, a malefic its obstruction case, the 9th or 10th lord its royal-rank case.
- Check the 11th as well, because Ch. 21 reads malefics in both the 10th and 11th together.
- Look for Ruchaka (Aries, Cancer, Aquarius rising) and for a 9th or 10th lord partner in the yogas list.
For the career reading that combines the 10th lord, its occupants, the D10 and the Amatya Karaka, see the career and money calculator and the Dashamsa (D10) calculator. Method and limits are on the methodology page.
Over-readings
- "Mars in the 10th guarantees a high position." The sutra gives a good default and two conditions: a benefic for success and fame, the 9th or 10th lord for rank. A malefic in the house reverses it.
- "Full directional strength means a strong Mars." It is one of six components. A Mars in Cancer in the 10th has full direction and the lowest position score.
- "Ruchaka in the 10th comes with Mangal Dosha." Not in this engine; the 10th is the one Ruchaka angle outside its dosha list.
- "The app's favourable line means the sutra's royal-rank case applies." The line reads dignity; the sutra reads company and lordship.
- "Mars in the 10th is a Raj Yoga." It is one ingredient; Dharma-Karmadhipati needs the partner lord in the same house.
- "The Ch. 39 Raj Yog will show in the yogas list." The engine deliberately does not code Ch. 39's general Raj Yogas.
- "Mars in my 10th from the Moon is the same reading." Saravali reads that position separately, and the two coincide only when the Moon is in the Lagna sign.

- Is Mars good in the 10th house?
- The verses are favourable by default: the Bhrigu Sutras give acclaim, fortune and prosperity; Saravali Ch. 30 gives a proficient, valorous, unconquerable native with sons and happiness. The sutras turn it to obstruction when a malefic is with Mars.
- Why is the 10th called Mars's strongest house?
- BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 measures Mars's directional strength from the 4th, so it is full in the 10th. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35 says the same. It is a strength measure, not a reading of results.
- Which rising signs get Ruchaka Yoga from Mars in the 10th?
- Aries (Mars exalted in Capricorn), Cancer (Mars in Aries) and Aquarius (Mars in Scorpio). For all three the app's planet row is favourable.
- Does Mars in the 10th cause Mangal Dosha?
- Not by this engine's rule, which uses houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12, nor by BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47, which names the 12th, 4th, 7th and 8th.
- What does Mars aspect from the 10th?
- The 4th by its 7th aspect, the 1st by its special 4th-place aspect and the 5th by its special 8th-place aspect. The engine counts all three as malefic aspects.
- Why is my Mars in the 10th marked testing?
- Its dignity label is not Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly. For Libra rising Mars is debilitated; for Virgo and Sagittarius rising it is in Mercury's signs; for several others it depends on where the sign's lord sits.
- What is the 9th or 10th lord condition in the sutra?
- Sutras 75-85 give royal rank when Mars is with the 9th or 10th lord. For Pisces rising that means Jupiter; for Cancer rising Jupiter as 9th lord (Mars is itself the 10th lord); for Aquarius rising Venus.
- Is a Mars dasha good with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 counts a Kendra among Mars's strong conditions. For Cancer and Aquarius rising it is also the 10th lord's dasha. This app grades the period by dignity and house: good only for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign.
