BPHS defines the 8th as the house of longevity first (Ch. 11 Sl. 9), and Ch. 44 names it with the 3rd as one of the two houses of life's length; the Maraka houses are the 2nd and 7th. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator is blunter: in his note on the Moon (p. 40) the 8th is "one of the most inauspicious houses of the horoscope and a planet loses all its good significations when posited in this house"; under Mars (p. 57) it is "the worst Dusthana".
The verses on the Moon in the 8th are not all as dark as that remark. Saravali calls the native very intelligent and splendid but diseased, and short-lived with a weak Moon. The Bhrigu Sutras give loss of comforts, danger from watery places and separation from relations, and long life when the Moon is in its own sign or exalted. BPHS adds that the Moon's 8th lordship is not evil, and builds two yogas on benefics in the 8th. This page sets those out and explains why the app's line here is always the testing one. For the planet see the Moon in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 8th house, Randhra Bhava.
Sources, and longevity
Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The corpus copy of the Bhrigu Sutras has lost the opening of the Moon-in-the-8th passage and its sutra numbers, so only the surviving text is reported. Much of what the texts say about this house concerns the length of life; it is reported as a record of the texts, not a prediction. This app does not calculate a lifespan, and nothing here is medical advice.
The house of the length of life
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9: longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and "things that have happened and are to happen", which the translator glosses as past and future births. Saravali names the house Vinasa, destruction, and Dehavivara, an opening of the body (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-27); BPHS Ch. 29 calls its Arudha the Maran Pad. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (p. 15) gives the modern list: inheritance, legacies, insurance and pension, accidents, delay, loss, obstruction, theft, chronic disease. This page does not merge the two lists.
The classical reason the house is hard is a count. BPHS Ch. 34 says the 8th lord is inauspicious because the 8th is the 12th from the 9th, the loss of fortune, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator makes the same count under the Moon (p. 40) and Mars (p. 57). BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 give the house three labels: a Panaphara, a Dusthana and a Chaturasra. As a Panaphara it gives a planet half of Kendradi Bal (Ch. 27 Sl. 5), more than the 6th or 12th.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 21
The verse (p. 101): "If the Moon is in 8th, the native will be very intelligent, very splendourous and will suffer from diseases. If the Moon be weak, he will be short-lived." It gives the mind and presence a good word and the body a bad one, and attaches the lifespan clause to the Moon's weakness; both are the text's statements, not forecasts or medical advice.
The Bhrigu Sutras
The surviving text (p. 40) speaks of loss "of comfort from conveyances"; watery places "will be sources of danger to his life", which the commentator reads as danger of drowning; and separation from relations on account of the wife, for which the commentator finds no astrological reason and asks readers to verify it. "If the Moon is in her Own sign or exalted, the native will be long-lived"; with a waning Moon, a medium span. These are the text's statements, not forecasts. The commentator adds that the strength of the Lagna lord and the 8th lord should also be weighed.
The exceptions translate into rising signs. The Moon is in its own sign Cancer in the 8th only for Sagittarius rising, and exalted in Taurus in the 8th only for Libra rising. For the other ten Ascendants the long-life exception is not available from the Moon's sign. The waning clause applies in any sign.
| Source | Reading | Exception or condition |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 21 | Very intelligent and splendid, suffers from diseases | A weak Moon: short-lived |
| Bhrigu Sutras (surviving text) | Loss of comfort from conveyances; danger from watery places; separation from relations | Own sign or exalted: long-lived. Waning: medium span |
| Bhrigu commentary | The 8th one of the most inauspicious houses; a planet loses all its good significations there | Weigh the Lagna lord and 8th lord too |
| BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 | Lordship of the 8th is not evil for the Sun and Moon | Applies when the Moon rules the 8th (Sagittarius rising) |
| This app, phMoon8U | Loss of comfort or vitality - a placement worth real caution around | Printed for every Moon in the 8th |
Phase: the waning clause
Both the Saravali verse and the Bhrigu Sutras turn on the Moon's condition: weak in one, waning in the other. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts the decreasing Moon a malefic. A translator's note after that sloka, attributed to the Yavanas, grades the Moon by its distance ahead of the Sun: medium to 120 degrees, very auspicious from 120 to 240, without strength from 240 to 360. Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 16-17 gives the same in lunar days.
So "waning" in the sense of the last band, 240 to 360 degrees, is the Moon with "very little" strength. A Moon in the first days after full is waning by paksha but inside the strongest band, and the translator's note lets a waning Moon joined or aspected by a benefic turn benefic. The Moon phase calculator gives the elongation for your birth. This app counts the Moon a benefic whatever its phase.
Phase matters for one more 8th-house rule. BPHS reads malefics in the 8th as harmful to its subject; the yogas below need benefics there instead. A waxing Moon in the 8th is a benefic for those rules; a waning one, by Ch. 3 Sl. 11, is not.
Two yogas a benefic in the 8th can make
- Lagn Adhi Yog (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 37): benefics in the 7th and 8th from the Lagna, free of conjunction with or aspect from malefics, make "a great person, learned in Shastras and happy". It is a major favourable yoga that requires benefics in the 8th. A benefic Moon in the 8th can be one of them; a malefic joining it or aspecting it breaks the condition.
- Parvat Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 7-8): benefics in the Kendras, with the 7th and 8th vacant or occupied only by benefics. A benefic Moon in the 8th keeps that condition open; a malefic there would close it.
Both depend on the Moon counting as a benefic, which is where the phase comes back. The engine counts the Moon a benefic always, so if your chart shows either yoga in the yogas calculator, it has not checked the phase. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one.
BPHS Ch. 39 has Raj Yogas built on weak planets in the hard houses. Sl. 19: debilitated planets in the 3rd, 6th and 8th while the Lagna lord, exalted or in its own house, aspects the Lagna. A Moon debilitated in Scorpio in the 8th, which happens for Aries rising, is the kind of planet that verse asks for, though the rest must also hold. Sl. 29-31 add a debilitated planet in the 6th or 8th aspecting the Lagna; a Moon in the 8th aspects the 2nd, not the Lagna, so it cannot be that planet.
Rising signs: dignity and lordship
Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Moon is in your 8th when it occupies the eighth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The Moon rules Cancer only, so it rules one house in every chart, and BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 8th.
| Ascendant | Moon's sign | Natural dignity | Moon rules | BPHS Ch. 24, that lord in the 8th |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Scorpio | Debilitated | 4th | Sl. 44: devoid of domestic and other comforts, little parental happiness, "equal to a neuter" |
| Taurus | Sagittarius | Neutral (Jupiter) | 3rd | Sl. 32: a thief, living by serving others; the verse also names a place of death (the royal gate) |
| Gemini | Capricorn | Neutral (Saturn) | 2nd | Sl. 20: abundant land and wealth, but limited marital felicity and no happiness from the elder brother |
| Cancer | Aquarius | Neutral (Saturn) | 1st | Sl. 8: an accomplished scholar, but sickly, thievish, given to anger, a gambler, joins others' wives |
| Leo | Pisces | Neutral (Jupiter) | 12th | Sl. 140: always gains, speaks affably, all good qualities, medium span of life |
| Virgo | Aries | Neutral (Mars) | 11th | Sl. 128: reversals in undertakings; long life, while his wife predeceases him |
| Libra | Taurus | Exalted | 10th | Sl. 116: "devoid of acts", long-lived, inclined to blame others |
| Scorpio | Gemini | Friendly (Mercury) | 9th | Sl. 104: not prosperous; little happiness from the elder brother |
| Sagittarius | Cancer | Own | 8th | Sl. 92: long-lived; if the planet is weak, medium longevity, and a thief, blameworthy, blaming others |
| Capricorn | Leo | Friendly (Sun) | 7th | Sl. 80: deprived of marital happiness; the wife sickly, of poor disposition, not obedient |
| Aquarius | Virgo | Friendly (Mercury) | 6th | Sl. 68: sickly, inimical, desiring others' wealth and wives, impure |
| Pisces | Libra | Neutral (Venus) | 5th | Sl. 56: not much progenic happiness; cough and pulmonary disorders; given to anger, devoid of happiness |
Read down, the column shows the 8th taking from whatever house its occupant rules, with three exceptions: the 2nd lord gains "abundant land and wealth", the wealth of the dead; the 10th and 11th lords both give long life while harming their own houses; and the 12th lord "always gains" (Sl. 140), the nearest thing in Ch. 24 to the later idea that Trika lords in Trika houses turn out well.
The rows where the exceptions meet
- Sagittarius rising: the Moon is the 8th lord in its own sign in the 8th. The Bhrigu Sutras' own-sign exception gives long life; Ch. 24 Sl. 92 gives long life (medium if weak); Ch. 34 says the Moon's 8th lordship is not evil; this app reports Sarala Yoga.
- Libra rising: the Moon is exalted in Taurus and rules the 10th. The exaltation exception gives long life, and Sl. 116 gives long life while calling the native "devoid of acts". Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 say the Moon and Mercury cause Raj Yoga for Libra rising.
- Leo rising: the Moon is the 12th lord in the 8th, Sl. 140's "always gains", and the app reports Vimala Yoga. Aquarius rising: the 6th lord in the 8th, the harsh Sl. 68, and the app reports Harsha Yoga.
Vipareeta yogas as coded here (any Trika lord in a Trika house) and BPHS's own versions in Ch. 39 are not the same rule: Parashara's need a strong Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna and a weak Trika lord. The engine's reference for Vipareeta is a modern case-study book that uses the yoga without a numbered definition.
The 8th lord, the Lagna lord and Saturn
With the Moon in your 8th, the 8th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign. BPHS Ch. 19, the house chapter, opens with that lord: in an angle, long life (Sl. 1); joined to the Lagna lord or a malefic in the 8th itself, short (Sl. 2). The chapter qualifies itself: Sl. 8-13 reverse Sl. 1 "if Lagn's Lord is weak". Sl. 4-7 close with the method: "there are many other Yogas, dealing with the issue of longevity", and the strength of the planets must be estimated.
| 8th lord in | BPHS Ch. 24 | What the verse says |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Sl. 85 | Devoid of physical felicity; wounds; hostile to gods and Brahmins |
| 2nd | Sl. 86 | Little vigour, a little wealth, lost wealth not regained |
| 3rd | Sl. 87 | Devoid of fraternal happiness, indolent, devoid of servants and strength |
| 4th | Sl. 88 | "The child will be deprived of its mother"; devoid of house, lands and happiness; betrays friends |
| 5th | Sl. 89 | Dull-witted, few children, but long-lived and wealthy |
| 6th | Sl. 90 | Wins over enemies; afflicted by diseases; danger through snakes and water in childhood |
| 7th | Sl. 91 | Two wives; with a malefic there, a downfall in business |
| 8th | Sl. 92 | Long-lived; if the planet is weak, medium longevity, and a thief, blameworthy, blaming others |
| 9th | Sl. 93 | Betrays his religion, a heterodox, a wicked wife, steals others' wealth |
| 10th | Sl. 94 | Devoid of paternal bliss, a talebearer, bereft of livelihood; a benefic aspect stops it maturing |
| 11th | Sl. 95 | With a malefic: miserable early, happy later. With a benefic: long-lived |
| 12th | Sl. 96 | Spends on bad ends, a short life, more so with a malefic there |
BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make Saturn the fixed significator of the 8th, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (p. 105) says "All malefics in the 8th house shorten the longevity of the native but Saturn in this house is believed to give good longevity"; he gives no reason, though Saturn being the karaka is the obvious link. The Moon is not that karaka, and its long-life clause comes from its own sign and exaltation instead. See Saturn in the 8th house.
The longevity chapters, as a record
The rest of Ch. 19 and Ch. 43 lean on the 8th lord, and they are the context for the Moon's long-life clauses. Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7 list long-life combinations: the 6th lord in the 12th; the lords of the 5th, 8th and 1st in their own or friendly signs or Navamsas; the lords of the 1st, 8th and 10th and Saturn in angles, trines or the 11th. Sl. 14-15 add a very strong Lagna lord aspected by a benefic in an angle. Ch. 43 Sl. 71-73 take the stronger of the Lagna lord and the 8th lord: in a Kendra, long life; a Panaphara, medium; an Apoklima, short. Sl. 33-40 classify life by whether three pairs occupy movable, fixed or dual signs: the Lagna and 8th lords, Saturn and the Moon, and the natal and Hora Lagnas. The Moon is therefore an input to Parashara's longevity method wherever it sits.
With the Moon in the 8th, the 8th lord is the lord of the Moon's sign, and for Sagittarius rising it is the Moon itself, sitting in a Panaphara. These rules are recorded here without being applied, and this app implements none of them: it does not calculate a lifespan, and the methods of Ch. 43 and the Marak rules of Ch. 44 are not built.
Two other rules name the Lagna lord in the 8th, which for Cancer rising is the Moon. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2: with the Lagna lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, "physical felicity will diminish". Ch. 42 Sl. 4: the Lagna lord in the 8th while the Lagna or the Moon is with Ketu, a combination for penury. BPHS Ch. 31 reads an unobstructed Argala on the 8th as difficulties, and the Bhava Padas calculator gives the 8th's Arudha, the Maran Pad of Ch. 29.
Why the app's line is always the testing one
The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable line only when its dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. In the 8th the second condition always fails. The favourable string, "unusual resilience and depth, when well supported", is never shown; every Moon in the 8th gets "loss of comfort or vitality - a placement worth real caution around". The same limit applies to every planet in the 8th, so the exceptions are the part to read.
The summary sentence names the dignity only when it is weak, so a debilitated Moon (Aries rising) is described as weak and an exalted or own-sign Moon (Libra, Sagittarius rising) by sign only. The dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58: for the Moon, the Sun and Mercury are natural friends and every other lord neutral, and the temporary half comes from the chart. In the 8th, the sign lord is the 8th lord.
dashaQuality() calls any planet in a Dusthana challenging, so the Moon in the 8th always grades challenging there, in line with BPHS Ch. 48 below. The Moon Mahadasha page sets out both engine tests.
Strength, the aspect on the 2nd, and lunar yogas
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives the Moon full directional strength in the 4th and none in the 10th. The 8th is two houses from the 10th, about one-third of the maximum in this engine's even steps. Kendradi Bal is half in a Panaphara. The Shad Bala calculator shows both.
From the 8th the Moon aspects the 2nd; aspectedHouses('moon', 8) returns [2]. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator uses this geometry for the Sun, Mars and Saturn in the 8th, reading their aspect as harm to 2nd-house matters. He gives no such result for the Moon's aspect, and the engine counts it as a benefic aspect. See the 2nd house.
For the lunar yogas, the 2nd and 12th from a Moon in the 8th are your 9th and 7th houses; Adhi Yoga looks at benefics in your 1st, 2nd and 3rd; Gaj Kesari, as coded here, at Jupiter in your 2nd, 5th, 8th or 11th, or in an angle of the chart, with a benefic joining or aspecting it.
Timing
The Moon's Mahadasha lasts ten years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 23-26 name this house: a waning Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th brings friction with the government, loss of wealth and distress to the mother; a strong Moon there, troubles and good times by turns. Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 and 18-20 say planets placed in the 8th give unfavourable dashas, and ask for the placement at the start of the dasha to be considered as well as at birth. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates.
Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make a 6th, 8th or 12th lord's dasha favourable when it is associated with a trine lord. For Sagittarius rising the Moon is the 8th lord; this app's line for an 8th-lord period is "major transformation and financial caution - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha"; Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give "the possibility of death and financial losses", and the app drops the first half on purpose. Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon; the engine flags the transiting Moon in the 8th from the natal Moon as an intensified position.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 06:00 IST on 9 January 2004 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Sagittarius-rising case. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Sagittarius 5.11 deg |
| Moon | Cancer 9.64 deg (Pushya), 8th house, Own sign; also the 8th lord |
| Jupiter (Lagna lord) | Leo 24.97 deg, retrograde, 9th house |
| Saturn (karaka of the 8th) | Gemini 15.02 deg, retrograde, 7th house |
| Venus | Capricorn 29.15 deg, 2nd house |
| Sun, Mercury | Sagittarius, 1st house |
| Moon ahead of the Sun | 195.48 deg |
| House line | Testing: phMoon8U, although the Moon is in its own sign |
| dashaQuality for the Moon | Challenging |
| Yogas reported for the Moon | Sarala; Durudhura (Jupiter, Saturn); Chandradhi (Venus) |
The house fixes both engine grades. The Bhrigu Sutras' own-sign exception applies, and the Moon is 195 degrees ahead of the Sun, inside Saravali's strongest band, so neither the "waning" nor the "weak Moon" clause is met by that measure. Ch. 24 Sl. 92 gives long life; Ch. 19 Sl. 2 is not met, since the Moon, as 8th lord in the 8th, is joined by neither the Lagna lord nor a malefic. The engine reports Sarala Yoga.
The yogas that need the 7th and 8th clean of malefics are not met: Saturn, a malefic, is in the 7th, so Lagn Adhi and Parvat cannot form. Jupiter in the 2nd from the Moon and Saturn in the 12th from it form Durudhura; Venus in the 7th from the Moon forms Chandradhi. The Moon's aspect falls on Venus in the 2nd. The Moon at 9.64 degrees is in the first third of Cancer, which by BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 brings its dasha results at the start of the period; the engine's Vimshottari sequence here begins with Saturn. The page lists these and does not net them.
Two counts the engine does not make. The Sun is in Sagittarius and the Moon in Cancer, the 8th sign from the Sun, a panaphara, which BPHS Ch. 37 Sl. 1 reads as a middling amount of wealth, learning and skill. And for Ch. 43 Sl. 71-73 the Lagna lord, Jupiter, is in the 9th, an Apoklima, and the 8th lord, the Moon, in the 8th, a Panaphara; which is stronger is a Shad Bala question left to the reader, and this app does not draw the longevity conclusion.
Your own chart
- Confirm the Moon is in the eighth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Expect the testing line; check the Bhrigu Sutras' exceptions yourself (Cancer or Taurus; waning or not).
- Find the 8th lord (the lord of the Moon's sign) and the Lagna lord, as BPHS Ch. 19 asks.
- Check the 7th and 8th for malefics: Lagn Adhi and Parvat need them clean.
- Find the house the Moon rules; if it is the 6th, 8th or 12th, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala in the yogas list.
- Weigh strength with the Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators, as Ch. 19 Sl. 7 asks.
Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.
Readings to avoid
- "A Moon in the 8th shortens life." The Bhrigu Sutras give long life in Cancer or Taurus and a medium span when waning; BPHS judges longevity from many factors together (Ch. 19 Sl. 7). This app computes none of it.
- "The 8th is the house of death." In BPHS it is a house of longevity; the Marakas are the 2nd and 7th.
- "A benefic is wasted in the 8th." BPHS builds Lagn Adhi Yog on benefics in the 7th and 8th.
- "The app says testing, so the Moon is weak." The line is fixed by the house; an own-sign Moon receives it too.
- "Danger from water means drowning." The commentator reads it that way; it is one clause of a sutra, a classical association, and not a forecast.
- "The 8th from my Moon in transit is my 8th house." Transits are counted from the Moon, natal houses from the Ascendant; with the Moon in the 8th, the 8th from the Moon is your 3rd house.
Questions about the Moon in the 8th
- Is the Moon in the 8th house bad?
- Saravali calls the native very intelligent and splendid but diseased, and short-lived with a weak Moon; the Bhrigu Sutras give loss of comforts, danger from watery places and separation from relations, with long life in own sign or exaltation and a medium span when waning.
- Which rising signs give the strongest Moon in the 8th?
- Sagittarius rising (Moon in Cancer as 8th lord; Ch. 24 Sl. 92; Ch. 34 exempts the Moon's 8th lordship) and Libra rising (Moon exalted, ruling the 10th).
- Why does the app always show the testing line?
- Its favourable line requires a house other than the 6th, 8th or 12th, so in the 8th the testing line always prints.
- Can a Moon in the 8th form a good yoga?
- As a benefic it can be part of Lagn Adhi Yog (benefics in the 7th and 8th, free of malefics) and keeps Parvat Yog possible. The app also reports Sarala, Vimala or Harsha when the Moon rules a Dusthana.
- What does the Moon aspect from the 8th?
- The 2nd house. The engine counts it as a benefic aspect; none of the three texts gives a separate verse for it.
- Is the Moon's dasha difficult with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 48 says planets in the 8th give unfavourable dashas, and Ch. 47 reads a waning Moon in the 8th as friction and losses, a strong one as good and bad by turns. This app grades it challenging.
- Does the Moon in the 8th say anything about the mind?
- BPHS makes the Moon the mind, and Saravali's 8th-house verse calls the native very intelligent and splendid. The surviving Bhrigu Sutras text speaks of comforts, relations and longevity, not of the mind, and this page adds nothing they do not say.
- Does this placement say anything about inheritance?
- BPHS lists the wealth of the dead among the 8th's items, and Ch. 24 Sl. 20 gives the 2nd lord in the 8th abundant land and wealth (Gemini rising, for the Moon). The Moon verses do not mention inheritance.
