Planet in house

What the classical texts say about the Sun in the 8th house: the Bhrigu Sutras' reading and its exceptions, BPHS's rule that 8th lordship is not evil for the Sun, the Sun's aspect on the 2nd, yogas by rising sign, and why this app always prints the testing line here.

The 8th house has a frightening reputation and a calmer classical definition. BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 makes it the house of longevity first, and Ch. 44 names it, with the 3rd, as one of the two houses of life's length; the houses BPHS calls Maraka are the 2nd and 7th. A Sun in the 8th therefore puts the planet the texts call the soul into the house that measures how long the body holds it.

Saravali reads the Sun here as poor eyes, no wealth or happiness, a short life and separation from relatives. The Bhrigu Sutras read it as few children, eye trouble, meagre wealth and chronic health complaints, yet fame, and then give two exceptions that reverse the tone. BPHS adds a rule it gives only to the two luminaries: lordship of the 8th is not evil for the Sun. This page sets out those statements, what each rising sign changes, and why this app's line for the placement is always the testing one. For the planet see the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 8th house, Randhra Bhava.

Sources, and a gap

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. An earlier version of this page said Saravali's Sun-in-the-8th verse was not available; it is (Ch. 30 Sl. 9) and is quoted below. Health and lifespan phrases are reported as what a text says, not as medical advice or forecasts, and this app does not calculate a lifespan.

The house the Sun is entering

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 lists six things for Randhr Bhava: longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the wealth of the dead, and "things that have happened and are to happen", which the translator glosses as past and future births. Saravali names the house Vinasa, destruction, and Dehavivara, an opening of the body. BPHS Ch. 29 calls its Arudha the Maran Pad. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (Part I Ch. II, p. 15) gives the modern list: inheritance, legacies, insurance and pensions, accidents, delay, defeat, loss, theft, chronic disease. This page does not merge the two lists; the old names speak of endings and weak points, and none of them says "transformation", the word this app's house card uses.

Why the house is treated as difficult has a stated classical reason. BPHS Ch. 34 says the 8th lord is not auspicious because the 8th is the 12th from the 9th, the house of loss counted from the house of fortune, and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator makes the same count (Moon in the 8th, p. 40). BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 give the 8th three labels: a Panaphara (succedent), a Dusthana (with the 6th and 12th) and a Chaturasra (with the 4th). Neither text draws a consequence from the last label in the passages that give it, so this page draws none either.

The Bhrigu Sutras on the Sun in the 8th

Sutras 75-82 (p. 26): the native "will get few children" and "will suffer from eye diseases"; in the 10th year a head injury, which he will not get if the Sun is aspected by a benefic; meagre wealth; his cattle destroyed; chronic ailments of the body, "but he will be famous". Then come the stated exceptions. If the 8th lord is with strong planets, the native owns land of his choice. If the Sun is exalted or in its own sign, "the native will be long lived". Body and age lines are the text's statements, not medical advice or forecasts.

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 9

Saravali's verse (p. 101) is shorter and harsher, with no exception: the native "will have deformed eyes, be devoid of wealth and happiness, be short-lived and will suffer separation from his relatives". It agrees with the Bhrigu Sutras on the eyes and on wealth, and with their default on lifespan, but not with their exceptions. Like the other lines, the lifespan clause is the text's statement, not a forecast.

The exceptions are worth turning into rising signs, because only two Ascendants can meet the first. The Sun is exalted in Aries, which is the 8th sign for Virgo rising, and in its own sign in Leo, which is the 8th sign for Capricorn rising. For the other ten Ascendants the long-life exception is not available from the Sun's sign. The second exception depends on the 8th lord, which is the lord of the Sun's sign, and on whatever it sits with.

Two classical attitudes sit side by side in that table. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator calls the 8th "the worst Dusthana" (under Mars, p. 57) and says a planet "loses all its good significations" there (under the Moon, p. 40). Saravali's general rule (Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87) says malefics are auspicious in the 6th, 8th and 12th. The Sun is a malefic (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11), so by that rule it is in one of its better houses; by the commentator's, in the worst. Saravali's own Sun verse (Sl. 9) does not follow its general rule here: it reads the placement harshly.

The aspect on the 2nd, and why the commentary names the eyes

From the 8th the Sun's only aspect falls on the 2nd house; aspectedHouses('sun', 8) returns [2]. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator uses exactly this geometry: a planet in the 8th aspects the 2nd, so he explains the eye-disease sutras for the 8th-house Sun and Mars through the 2nd, a house of eyesight, and Saturn there as bringing poverty by afflicting the house of wealth. The eye line is the sutra's and the 2nd-house reason is the commentator's; neither is medical advice. For the house aspected, see the 2nd house; for the Sun in it, the Sun in the 2nd.

The 2nd is also a Maraka house in BPHS Ch. 44, the "powerful" one of the two. Ch. 44 Sl. 2-5 name occupants and associates of the 2nd and 7th lords as Marakas, not planets aspecting those houses, so this page draws no Maraka rule from the aspect. What the engine does is mechanical: the Sun is a malefic, so its aspect lowers the Shad Bala of any planet in your 2nd.

Lordship: the exemption and the rising signs

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 sets four rules for 8th lords: the effects of 8th and 12th lords depend on association; the 8th lord is not auspicious in itself; owning the 3rd, 7th or 11th as well makes it specifically harmful, owning a trine as well makes it auspicious; and "Randhr's lordship of Surya and Candr is not evil". The Sun owns only Leo, so it is the 8th lord only for Capricorn rising, and that is the Ascendant for which the exemption bites.

For a Sun in the 8th, the house the Sun rules is set by the rising sign, and BPHS Ch. 24 gives one verse for each house lord placed in the 8th. The table gives each with its harsh clauses, as the text's statements and not as forecasts.

Read down the column, the 8th takes from whatever house its occupant rules: the 4th lord loses comforts, the 5th lord children, the 9th lord prosperity. There are three exceptions. The 2nd lord here gets "abundant land and wealth", which fits the house's own item, the wealth of the dead. The 10th and 11th lords both give a long life while harming their own houses. And the best verse belongs to another Dusthana lord: the 12th lord in the 8th "always gains" (Sl. 140).

The two rising signs where the exceptions meet

  • Capricorn rising. The Sun is the 8th lord in its own sign in the 8th. The Bhrigu Sutras' own-sign exception gives long life; Ch. 24 Sl. 92 gives long life; Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says the Sun's 8th lordship is not evil; Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40 call the Sun neutral for Capricorn rising. This app also reports Sarala Yoga, the 8th lord in a Dusthana.
  • Virgo rising. The Sun is exalted in Aries and rules the 12th. The exaltation exception gives long life; Ch. 24 Sl. 140 is the best verse in the column; the app reports Vimala Yoga, the 12th lord in a Dusthana. Sl. 140 is the nearest thing in Ch. 24 to the later idea that Trika lords in Trika houses turn out well.

The opposite case is Pisces rising: the Sun is debilitated in Libra and rules the 6th, and Sl. 68 is among the harshest rows. The app reports Harsha Yoga (the 6th lord in a Dusthana) for it, and BPHS Ch. 39, below, has a Raj Yoga verse that asks for exactly this kind of planet.

Leo rising is a case of its own. The Sun is the Lagna lord in the 8th. BPHS Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 say that with the Lagna lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th "physical felicity will diminish", and Ch. 24 Sl. 8 calls the person an accomplished scholar but sickly and quick to anger. Ch. 42 Sl. 4 adds a penury combination that starts from the Lagna lord in the 8th, but it also needs the Lagna or the Moon to be with Ketu.

Yogas the Sun in the 8th makes and breaks

Several named combinations depend on what sits in the 8th. They can be checked in the yogas calculator.

  • Vipareeta Raja Yogas, as this app detects them: Sarala (Capricorn rising), Vimala (Virgo rising) and Harsha (Pisces rising) all form from the Sun alone when it rules a Dusthana and sits in the 8th. The engine's reference is a modern case-study book that uses the yoga without a numbered definition; BPHS Ch. 24 reads some of the same placements differently.
  • BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 19-20, Raj Yogas from weak Trika lords. Sl. 19 asks for debilitated planets in the 3rd, 6th and 8th while the Lagna lord is exalted or in its own house and aspects the Lagna. A Sun debilitated in Libra in the 8th (Pisces rising) is that kind of planet; the rest of the verse must also hold. Sl. 20 asks for the 6th, 8th and 12th lords in fall, in enemy signs or combust, with the same strong Lagna lord.
  • BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 29-31 add a debilitated planet in the 6th or 8th aspecting the Lagna. A Sun in the 8th aspects the 2nd, not the Lagna, so the Sun cannot be the planet that verse asks for.
  • Lagn Adhi Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 37) needs benefics in the 7th and 8th free of malefic association; Parvat Yog (Sl. 7-8) needs the 7th and 8th vacant or holding only benefics. A Sun in the 8th is a malefic there, so neither yoga can form with it in place.

The Ch. 39 verses and Sarala Yoga rest on a similar idea but are not the same rule: Parashara's versions require a strong Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna and a debilitated, combust or enemy-sign Trika lord, while Sarala as coded here asks only for the 8th lord to sit in a Trika house. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh a yoga once found.

Why this app's line is always the testing one

The Kundali reading shows a planet's favourable line only when its dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and its house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. In the 8th the second condition always fails. The favourable string for this placement, "genuine longevity and resilience - Sun tends to do better here than most malefics on this specific measure, especially in own sign or exaltation", follows the Bhrigu Sutras' exceptions closely, and it is never shown. Every Sun in the 8th gets "reduced resources and chronic strain otherwise".

The same limit applies to every planet in the 8th, so the exceptions column is the part to read. For the Sun that means: an exalted Sun (Virgo rising) and an own-sign Sun (Capricorn rising) receive the same testing line as a debilitated one, though the summary sentence names the dignity only when it is weak. The engine's choice follows BPHS's Dusthana rule; the Bhrigu Sutras' exceptions are the part of the classical reading it does not show.

The dasha panel agrees with the house line. dashaQuality() calls any planet in a Dusthana challenging, so the Sun in the 8th always reads challenging there, which matches BPHS Ch. 48 below. The Sun Mahadasha page sets out both engine tests.

The dignity verdict still matters for the summary's wording and for the Shad Bala, and it is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 with the sign's lord: the natural half fixed (Moon, Mars, Jupiter friends; Venus, Saturn enemies; Mercury neutral), the temporary half read from your chart (the lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Sun is a temporary friend). In the 8th, the sign lord is also the 8th lord, so the Bhrigu Sutras' land clause and the dignity verdict look at the same planet.

Strength in the 8th

The 8th is a Panaphara, and BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 gives a planet there half of the positional strength called Kendradi Bal, against a quarter in the 6th or 12th. So a Sun in the 8th is positionally stronger than one in the other two Dusthanas. Directional strength, by the arithmetic of BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 set out on the Sun in the 4th house page, is measured from the 4th house; the 8th is four signs past that zero point, past halfway toward the peak at the 10th. The Shad Bala calculator computes both with the real degrees.

Strength is also what the longevity chapters ask for. BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 7 closes its list of combinations by saying the strength and weakness of the planets concerned be estimated, and Ch. 43 Sl. 71-73 grade life by the stronger of the Lagna lord and the 8th lord: in a Kendra, long; in a Panaphara, medium; in an Apoklima, short. They are recorded here as the text's rules; this app implements none of them and computes no lifespan.

The 8th lord, and Saturn the karaka

With the Sun in your 8th, the 8th lord is the lord of the Sun's sign: Mars for Scorpio or Aries, Jupiter for Sagittarius or Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn or Aquarius, Venus for Taurus or Libra, Mercury for Gemini or Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo. BPHS Ch. 19 opens with that lord: in an angle, long life (Sl. 1); joined to the Lagna lord or a malefic in the 8th itself, short (Sl. 2). The chapter turns on the Lagna lord: Sl. 8-13 reverse Sl. 1 if the Lagna lord is weak.

Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 lists the fixed significators of the houses in order, and the eighth is Saturn. The commentator on the Bhrigu Sutras (Saturn in the 8th, p. 105) says "All malefics in the 8th house shorten the longevity of the native but Saturn in this house is believed to give good longevity"; he gives no reason, though Saturn being the 8th's karaka is the obvious link. The Sun is not the karaka, so that exception is not its own. For the Sun in Capricorn or Aquarius in the 8th (Gemini or Cancer rising), Saturn is both the 8th lord and the karaka, and the Sun's natural enemy. See Saturn in the 8th house.

Timing and the 8th

The Sun's Mahadasha lasts six years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15) and recurs as an Antardasha in every other period; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 say a planet placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th at the start of its dasha yields adverse results, and Sl. 18-20 repeat that the dashas of planets in the 8th produce unfavourable effects; Parashara asks for the placement at birth and at the start of the dasha both to be considered. Ch. 47 Sl. 12-15 describe the weak Sun's dasha, including a Sun weak in Randhr, and soften it when a benefic aspects the Sun.

Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 add a qualification: the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord becomes favourable if that lord is associated with the lord of a trine. For Capricorn rising the Sun is the 8th lord; joined with Venus (5th and 10th lord) or Mercury (9th and 6th lord) it would meet that condition. For the 8th lord's own dasha, Ch. 48 gives "the possibility of death and financial losses"; this app carries over only the financial half: "major transformation and financial caution - historically a house needing extra care in this Dasha".

How a Sun Antardasha nests inside a longer Mahadasha is in Antardasha and Pratyantar.

The Sun passing the 8th from your Moon

The Gochar calculator counts transits from the natal Moon, and the engine marks the 1st, 8th and 12th from the Moon as testing for every planet. For the Sun the note reads "classically more testing from your Moon - real caution and steadiness serve better than pushing forward here", for about a month. A natal Sun in the 8th house is counted from the Ascendant and is a different thing.

The Sun's dignity is Friendly sign (Jupiter, lord of Pisces, is the 4th sign from it), yet the testing line prints and the dasha quality is challenging, both because of the house. The Bhrigu Sutras' long-life exception needs an exalted or own-sign Sun; this is neither. Their land exception needs the 8th lord with strong planets; Jupiter is alone in Gemini.

What the lordship verses add. With Leo rising the Sun is the Lagna lord in the 8th: Ch. 24 Sl. 8 (an accomplished scholar, but sickly and quick to anger) and Ch. 12 Sl. 1-2 (physical felicity diminished). Ch. 42 Sl. 4 is not met: Ketu is in Cancer, with neither the Lagna nor the Moon. The 8th lord, Jupiter, is in the 11th; Ch. 24 Sl. 95 gives a long life with a benefic there and an early hardship then later happiness with a malefic, and Jupiter has no companion. The Sun's aspect falls on Virgo, the 2nd, where the Moon sits, so the commentator's 2nd-house derivation applies to a house that is occupied. No Vipareeta yoga forms for the Sun, which rules the 1st. The page lists the factors the texts name and does not net them.

Working through your own chart

  1. Confirm the Sun is in the eighth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator. A birth time that is out can move the Ascendant.
  2. Note that the app's line will be the testing one, and check the Bhrigu Sutras' exceptions yourself: is the Sun exalted (Aries) or in Leo?
  3. Find the house the Sun rules and read that row of the Ch. 24 table; if it rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala in the yogas list.
  4. Find the 8th lord (the lord of the Sun's sign). Is it in an angle (Ch. 19 Sl. 1)? Is it with strong planets (the land exception)?
  5. Check the Lagna lord's strength, which turns Ch. 19 either way.
  6. Look at your 2nd house, which the Sun aspects.
  7. Weigh strength with the Shad Bala and Vimshopaka Bala calculators, as Ch. 19 Sl. 7 asks.

How positions are computed is on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

Readings to be careful with

  • "The Sun in the 8th shortens life." The Bhrigu Sutras give long life when the Sun is exalted or in its own sign, and BPHS judges longevity by the Lagna lord, the 8th lord and many combinations together (Ch. 19 Sl. 7). This app computes no lifespan.
  • "The 8th is the house of death." In BPHS it is a house of longevity; the Maraka houses are the 2nd and 7th.
  • "8th lordship always harms." BPHS Ch. 34 exempts the Sun and Moon by name.
  • "The app says testing, so the texts agree." The engine follows the Dusthana rule; the favourable exceptions are in the Bhrigu Sutras.
  • "A Vipareeta yoga settles it." The yoga comes from a modern book's usage, and BPHS Ch. 24 reads some of the same placements differently.
  • "The 8th from my Moon in transit is my 8th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about the Sun in the 8th

Is the Sun in the 8th house bad?
The Bhrigu Sutras give few children, eye trouble, meagre wealth and chronic complaints, yet fame, with long life if the Sun is exalted or in its own sign. Saravali's own verse (Ch. 30 Sl. 9) is harsher, though its general rule makes malefics auspicious in the 8th. BPHS Ch. 24 changes the reading by the house the Sun rules.
Which rising signs give the strongest Sun in the 8th?
Virgo rising (Sun exalted, ruling the 12th; Ch. 24 Sl. 140, "always gains") and Capricorn rising (Sun in Leo, ruling the 8th; Sl. 92, long-lived; and BPHS Ch. 34 calls the Sun's 8th lordship not evil).
Why does the app always show the testing line?
Its favourable line requires a house other than the 6th, 8th or 12th, so in the 8th the testing line always prints. The favourable string, which follows the Bhrigu Sutras' exceptions, is never shown.
What does the Sun aspect from the 8th?
The 2nd house. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator uses that aspect to explain the sutra's eye-disease line, the 2nd being a house of eyesight; neither is medical advice.
Does the Sun in the 8th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
In this app, when the Sun rules a Dusthana: Capricorn rising (Sarala), Virgo rising (Vimala) and Pisces rising (Harsha).
Does this placement say anything about inheritance?
BPHS lists "the wealth of the dead" among the 8th's indications, and Ch. 24 Sl. 20 gives the 2nd lord in the 8th abundant land and wealth (Cancer rising, for the Sun). The Sun sutras speak of meagre wealth and, in one exception, land; Saravali Sl. 9 of no wealth.
Is the Sun's dasha difficult with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 48 says planets placed in the 8th give unfavourable dashas, and this app's dasha quality reads the Sun as challenging. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make a Dusthana lord's dasha favourable when it is associated with a trine lord.
Are there other calculations for the 8th house in this app?
Yes, though none is specific to the Sun. The Bhava Padas calculator gives the Arudha of the 8th (the Maran Pad of BPHS Ch. 29), and the Argala calculator shows the planets intervening on each house; BPHS Ch. 31 reads an unobstructed Argala on the 8th as difficulties.
Is a Sun transiting the 8th from my Moon the same thing?
No. That month-long transit is counted from the Moon and marked testing for every planet. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant.
