What the Bhrigu Sutras, Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani, BPHS and two modern books say about Ketu in the 8th house, checked against the texts: the shared sutra and its 8th-lord ladder, Ketu's own lines and sign exceptions, the Dasha and sub-period rules, and how this app reads the placement.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

The 8th house is the house of longevity, inheritance and obstruction, and one of the three dusthanas. For Ketu it is the house where the sources most clearly make the reading depend on something else: the strength of the 8th lord and the company Ketu keeps. The shared Bhrigu sutra builds a ladder on the 8th lord, Chamatkar Chintamani reverses its money verdict in three signs, BPHS puts the Ketu Dasha from here in its hardest group, and a modern rule, if its scanned house number is read as 8, gives the period a partly favourable turn that BPHS does not.

This page describes rules, not a person. See also Ketu in Vedic astrology, the 8th house, Randhra Bhava and Rahu in the 2nd house; the Birth Chart calculator shows your Ketu's house.

A note on sources

Every classical line here was read in the source books for this page: the Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8, pp. 112-115), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani, Uttara Kalamrita and Sanketnidhi are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Ketu is the thinner node in these books: the Bhrigu Sutras give both nodes one shared set of sutras, Saravali has no node-in-house lines, and the only lines written for Ketu alone in this house are the two the Bhrigu Sutras quote. The texts give life-span figures for this placement; this page names that they do and does not repeat them. Health entries are what the texts say, not medical advice.

The 8th house in brief

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 gives Randhr Bhava longevity, battle, enemies, forts, the "wealth of the dead" and "things, that have happened and are to happen", which the translator glosses as past and future births. Randhra means an opening or weak point. The Bhrigu Sutras' own list (Part I, p. 15) adds inheritance, legacies, wills, insurance and pension, accidents and chronic disease, and a long run of words for loss and obstruction. Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 117) stays with Parashara's list, rendering the wealth of the dead as "wealth through inheritance".

The same book groups the 8th as a panapara (succeedent), a trika ("evil" house) with the 6th and 12th, and a chaturasra with the 4th. It is not an upachaya, and that matters for Ketu: BPHS gives the nodes favourable Dashas in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, upachayas all, and its Ketu Dasha rules put the 8th with the 2nd and 12th, the hardest group. BPHS's own chapter on Randhr Bhava, Ch. 19, deals with the 8th lord and with longevity and does not mention either node.

The shared Bhrigu sutra

The translator's note at the head of Part II Ch. 8 of the Bhrigu Sutras says the author gives the same effects for Rahu and Ketu in every house, presumably because they are always seventh from each other, while "the other authorities" give separate effects. So Sutras 22-23 are headed "Rahu or Ketu in the Eighth House", and the same words appear on Rahu in the 8th house. Nothing in that sutra is Ketu's in particular.

The sutra (p. 112) reads the native as "very sickly" and then gives a life-span in years, in three tiers: one figure for the node alone, a longer one if the node is associated with a benefic, and a longer one again if the lord of the 8th is strong or in its exaltation sign. This app computes no longevity and this page does not repeat the figures. What remains without them is the structure: an unconditional health line, then two conditions, the benefic with the node and the strong or exalted 8th lord, each moving the reading up. The earlier version of this page described the conditions correctly as improvements; it did not say that the "very sickly" line stands without one.

Ketu's own lines: Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani

Under "Other Views" on p. 113 the Bhrigu Sutras quote two works with separate lines for Rahu and for Ketu. These are the only lines written for Ketu alone in the 8th anywhere in the corpus. Brihat Jataka and Saravali are not among the authorities quoted: the book says at the 1st house that neither deals with the nodes in the houses.

Saravali Ch. 30No line for Rahu or Ketu in any house-
Read in bhrigu-sutras.txt (pp. 112-113) and saravali.txt Ch. 30. Paraphrased except where quoted.

The earlier version reported Phaldeepika as "quarrelsome, obstructed". The full line is harder: separation from those close, quarrels, a short life, injury from weapons and obstacles in every undertaking, with no condition. It is reported because it is what the book prints; it is a classical reading, not a forecast about anyone. Phaldeepika's Ketu line here differs from its Rahu line on the same page, which has rheumatic trouble, few children and evil deeds instead: one of the places where the other authorities really do separate the nodes.

Chamatkar Chintamani gives piles and a danger from falling from a horse, and then the money line with its exception: short of funds, but with an accumulation of wealth when Ketu is in Scorpio, Virgo or Aries. It is the only sign condition any source attaches to a node in the 8th. Counting the 8th sign from each Lagna, Ketu is in Scorpio for Aries rising, in Virgo for Aquarius rising and in Aries for Virgo rising. (The earlier page gave Gemini instead of Aries rising, an arithmetic slip.)

The three signs are not arbitrary in the dignity schemes the Bhrigu Sutras report. Scorpio is Ketu's exaltation and own sign in BPHS and Uttara Kalamrita; Virgo is his moolatrikona in Uttara Kalamrita; Aries is the sign Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara makes him lord of. Chamatkar Chintamani does not give that reason, and this page does not claim it was the author's; it notes that each of the three is a strong sign for Ketu in at least one scheme.

Saravali's silence

Saravali's Ch. 30, on the effects of planets in the bhavas, covers the seven grahas and never mentions Rahu or Ketu. Its only node-and-house lines, in Ch. 12 on evils cancelled at birth, name Rahu, not Ketu, and name the 3rd, 6th, 11th and the Ascendant. For Ketu in the 8th Saravali has nothing to say, and the gap is left empty here rather than filled from another book.

Rahu in the 2nd: the other half of this placement

Ketu and Rahu stand at the same degree of opposite signs, so in this app's whole-sign houses a Ketu in the 8th always has Rahu in the 2nd. BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give every graha a full aspect on the 7th from itself and special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and the engine follows that. Ketu's single aspect therefore falls on the 2nd, on Rahu, joining the house of inheritance to the house of family wealth. Because the Bhrigu Sutras use one set of sutras for both nodes, the sutra for Rahu in the 2nd is the same text as the sutra for Ketu in the 2nd; Rahu in the 2nd house takes that side.

Counted the other way, a Ketu in the 8th is aspected by any planet sitting with Rahu in the 2nd, by Mars from the 5th or the 1st house of the chart (its 4th and 8th aspects), by Jupiter from the 4th or 12th (its 5th and 9th), and by Saturn from the 6th or 11th (its 3rd and 10th). Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 83) gives Ketu the 3rd, 7th and 10th aspects as well; on that scheme a Ketu in the 8th would also aspect the 10th and the 5th houses. BPHS does not, and neither does this app.

Whose agent is it? Ketu and the lord of the 8th

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 says the nodes give predominantly the effects of the bhava lord they join, or of the bhava they occupy, and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 142) says the same: the nodes, owning no houses, give results by position, association and the rulers of the houses they occupy. The comment that closes the Bhrigu Sutras chapter (pp. 114-115) sets an order: a node acts for the planet it is conjoined with; failing that, for a planet aspecting it; only when it is neither joined nor aspected does it stand for the lord of its sign. In whole-sign houses the lord of Ketu's sign is the lord of the 8th, the very planet the shared sutra names.

The same comment quotes Uttara Kalamrita: the nodes, "if endowed with strength", produce effects like the planet owning the inauspicious house in whose house they sit or with whom they are joined. A lone Ketu in the 8th sits in the house of exactly such a lord. Uttara Kalamrita's routes to an auspicious node are a trikona or kendra position, association with the lord of the kendra or kona occupied, or a conjunction with any kendra or kona lord. Only the last is open from the 8th. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 give a matching route for the lord: the Dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord turns favourable when it is associated with the lord of a trikona.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 describe the 8th lord itself. Its effects "will depend on their association"; it is "not auspicious", as the lord of the 12th from the 9th; it is "specifically harmful" if it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th, and auspicious if it also owns a kona; and the 8th lordship of the Sun and Moon "is not evil". The table puts those rules beside the sign Ketu occupies and what each scheme says of that sign.

Two rising signs stand out. For Aries rising Ketu is in Scorpio, strong in three schemes, with Chamatkar Chintamani's wealth exception and an 8th lord, Mars, who is also the Lagna lord. For Libra rising Ketu is in Taurus, debilitated in two schemes, which is the Ketu-Ketu sub-period's hard case below. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign; the rest of the row follows from it.

Ketu's Mahadasha from the 8th

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 71 introduces the Ketu Dasha by calling Ketu "a headless trunk (Kabandha)", and Sl. 72-77 sort it by house into three groups: a kendra, trikona or the 11th, in a benefic, exaltation or own sign, for good relations with rulers, conveyances, children and gains from abroad; the 3rd, 6th or 11th, for a kingdom and friends; and the 2nd, 8th or 12th, or a malefic aspect, for "imprisonment, destruction of kinsmen and residential premises and anxieties", low company and disease. The same passage splits the seven years into thirds: Raj Yog at the start, fearfulness in the middle, ailments and distant journeys at the end.

BPHS passageWhat it says, as it bears on Ketu in the 8th
Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6A Dasha lord in Ari, Randhr or Vyaya at the start of its Dasha gives unfavourable results
Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77Ketu in Dhan, Randhr or Vyaya: the hard group above
Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8A graha in Ari, Randhr or Vyaya at the start of its Dasha yields adverse results; birth and Dasha-start placement both to be weighed
Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20Dashas of grahas in Randhr unfavourable; "(Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh)", which leaves out the 8th
Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24Rahu or Ketu in the 1st, 7th, 8th or 12th listed as Marakas; the benefic release in the same sloka is written for Rahu only
Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4Dasha results timed by decanate, always reversed for the nodes
Read in bphs.txt (Ch. 44: 4357-4364; Ch. 47: 5386-5517; Ch. 48: 5555-5580). Paraphrased except where quoted.

Every BPHS line agrees: the 8th is unfavourable for a Ketu Dasha. One point is easy to miss. Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24 name both nodes as Marakas in the 8th, but the sentence that follows, on difficulties in the Dasha and their release by a benefic, names Rahu alone. BPHS gives Ketu in the 8th no matching release in that passage. This page reports the Maraka label without drawing anything from it; this app does not time lifespan. Ketu Mahadasha sets out the period sub-period by sub-period, and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives your dates.

Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time a Dasha's results by the lord's decanate and reverse the order for the nodes, "who are always retrograde": a Ketu in the last ten degrees of its sign delivers early in its period, one in the first ten late, one in the middle ten in the middle. The text does not say how this rule combines with the fixed thirds of Sl. 72-77, and this page does not guess. Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 1/2 give a good Dasha for an exalted Rahu; the text writes no matching dignity rule for Ketu beyond the "exaltation or own sign" clause of Sl. 72-77, which sits in the kendra-trikona group, not the 8th.

Ketu sub-periods when Ketu is in the 8th

BPHS gives Ketu's sub-period (Antardasha) inside each Mahadasha, Ch. 52 to Ch. 60. Most of these passages count the hard houses from the Mahadasha lord rather than from the Lagna, so they reach a natal 8th-house Ketu only when the Mahadasha lord is in the Lagna. Three name Randhr from the Lagna directly. The text adds remedial measures to several, which this app does not prescribe.

Mahadasha (BPHS chapter)Ketu Antardasha rule touching the 8th
Ketu (Ch. 59 Sl. 3-4)Ketu debilitated, and Ketu in Randhr or Vyaya with a combust graha: heart trouble, loss of wealth, instability of mind
Rahu (Ch. 55 Sl. 43-45)Ketu without strength in Randhr or Vyaya: danger from thieves, wounds, separation from parents
Rahu (Ch. 55 Sl. 40-41)Ketu joined with Randhr's lord: bodily distress and mental tension; with or aspected by benefics: gains and recognition
Saturn (Ch. 57 Sl. 20-21)Ketu in Randhr or Vyaya from the Lagna or from the Dasha lord: a severe list of illness and separation
Sun (Ch. 52 Sl. 60-61)Ketu in the 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord: illness, loss of position, foreign journey
Moon (Ch. 53 Sl. 50-52)Ketu in the 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord, or with malefics: obstacles, quarrels
Mars (Ch. 54 Sl. 52-54)Ketu in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord: quarrels, illness
Jupiter (Ch. 56 Sl. 33-34)Ketu in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord, or with malefics: loss through the ruler, illness
Mercury (Ch. 58 Sl. 9-11)Ketu joined with malefics in the 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord: a fall from a conveyance, sorrow
Venus (Ch. 60 Sl. 70-72)Ketu in the 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord, or with a malefic: quarrels, expense, journeys abroad
Read in bphs.txt, Ch. 52-60 (lines 6152-7760). Paraphrased; remedies omitted.

Three details are specific to Ketu. First, the Ketu-Ketu rule joins two conditions with "and": a debilitated Ketu, and Ketu in the 8th or 12th with a combust graha. Which sign counts as debilitated depends on the scheme, Taurus or Gemini (the table above), and BPHS's own Ch. 47 names no debilitation sign for Ketu at all. Second, the Rahu-Mahadasha rule about Ketu joined with the 8th lord has an odd consequence for a Ketu in the 8th: the 8th lord there is in its own sign, which is a strong 8th lord, the shared sutra's best tier, while the sub-period rule reads the same conjunction as bodily distress. The texts do not reconcile the two. Third, the Venus chapter's bracket admits that "It is not laid down anywhere, in which Bhava Ketu does get positional strength", so the "without strength" of the Rahu chapter has no definition in BPHS.

Unlike Rahu, Ketu gets no sub-period rule in BPHS that names the bare 8th on the favourable side. The only favourable Ketu lines that can reach this house are those triggered by company: benefics joined with or aspecting Ketu in the Rahu chapter, and a Ketu related to the Lagna lord or a Yoga Karaka in the Mars and Saturn chapters.

What the modern books add

S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (2000) lists rules for good and bad periods (pp. 123-125). Item 15 reads, in the scanned text, "The dasa of Ketu occupying Sth house confers long and frequent travels, name and fame, strange dreams and astral experience", with a severe rider if Mars or Saturn aspects it. The scan renders both "8th" and "5th" as "Sth" elsewhere in the book, so the house cannot be settled from this copy. Read as 8th, the line is the only partly favourable reading of a Ketu period from this house in the corpus, and it contradicts BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77. Until the number is checked against a clean print, it is reported here and not relied on.

The other items are clear. Item 16: the Dasha of any planet in close conjunction with Ketu in the 8th or 12th "will be very bad". Item 13: a planet closely joined with Rahu or Ketu gives poor results in its Dasha, the closer the worse. Item 22: the nodes in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositors give very bad results; for a lone Ketu in the 8th, that is a question about where the 8th lord sits. On p. 185, in a passage on longevity, the same author writes that Mars, Rahu or Ketu alone in the 8th "may not cut short life", reserving the danger case for the Moon closely joined with them near the cusp. That is the one modern line in the corpus that reads a lone node in the 8th less severely than its reputation, and the longevity discussion stops there. These are one modern author's rules, several drawn from magazine articles he cites, not classical slokas.

Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 83) describes Ketu as standing "for hardships and isolation" and, if well placed, as giving "a spiritual and meditative influence", inclining the native "towards renunciation and emancipation". The book does not say whether the 8th counts as well placed, and it gives no per-house reading for the nodes, so it cannot be used to soften or harden this placement. It is one of the sources of the modern association of Ketu in the 8th with hidden or spiritual matters, but the house-specific claim is not in the text. Its karaka table (p. 118) makes Ketu the karaka for paternal relations, while its own description of Ketu (p. 83) gives him the maternal grandparents; the book does not reconcile the two.

How this app reads Ketu in the 8th

Your Kundali row for a planet turns favourable only when its dignity is strong and it is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The engine returns Neutral dignity for Ketu in every sign, so every Ketu in the 8th gets one sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward real hardship and reduced vitality". The favourable string for this house, "genuine resilience and longevity", is in the code but unreachable for Ketu. The sentence does not look at the 8th lord, a benefic with Ketu, or the sign, which are the three things the texts attach to this placement. (The earlier version of this page quoted the sentence with "when the 8th lord is weak" at the end; the current string has no such clause.)

The Mahadasha sentence uses the testing wording, "disconnection, unexpected loss and a pull toward isolation", and the three-level grade reads challenging, because the 8th is one of the 6th, 8th and 12th. Since Ketu's dignity is always Neutral and the 8th is always a dusthana, that pair follows for every Ketu in the 8th from the code path itself. The app applies BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 here, which agree with Sl. 72-77; none of the conditional rules above is coded.

A transit is a different measurement. The Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, not the Lagna, and with the malefic rule it applies to Ketu, transiting Ketu in the 8th sign from the Moon reads testing. The nodes stay about 18 months in a sign, moving backward, as the Bhrigu Sutras note (Part I, p. 13).

A worked chart

An illustrative birth, not a real person: 25 May 1990, 22:30 IST, New Delhi (28.6139 N, 77.2090 E), re-run in this app's engine on 9 October 2026. Sagittarius rises at 27.19 degrees. Ketu is at 17.08 degrees of Cancer, in Ashlesha, in the 8th house; Rahu is at 17.08 Capricorn in the 2nd with Saturn, retrograde at 1.21 in its own sign. The Moon, lord of Cancer and so of the 8th, is exalted at 27.81 Taurus in the 6th, with the Sun. Mars is in Pisces in the 4th, Mercury and Venus in Aries in the 5th, Jupiter in Gemini in the 7th. Every figure matched the earlier run; only the wording of the row sentence changed.

Nothing joins Ketu, so no benefic is with it, and the sutra's benefic tier does not apply. Saturn aspects it from Rahu's house, so by the agent rule Ketu acts first for Saturn, which for Sagittarius rising rules the 2nd and 3rd. The 8th lord, the Moon, is exalted in Taurus: the sutra's top tier, "strong or in his sign of exaltation". It is also a luminary, whose 8th lordship BPHS Ch. 34 calls "not evil". Yet the Moon sits in the 6th, which is the 11th from Ketu, not a 6th, 8th or 12th, so Chatterjee's item 22 is not triggered either. On the natal conditions this chart is on the easier side.

The engine prints the row as "classically more testing, tending toward real hardship and reduced vitality", graded challenging, the same as for every Ketu in the 8th. Saturn's aspect is a malefic aspect, which on its own puts Ketu in the hard group of Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 a second time. Cancer appears in none of the dignity schemes for Ketu. Ketu at 17.08 degrees is in the middle ten degrees, so the reversed decanate rule gives no early or late emphasis.

  • Ketu Mahadasha: 17 January 2065 to 18 January 2072 (the Moon in Mrigashira, a Mars nakshatra, starts the sequence with Mars).
  • Ketu-Ketu: no combust graha joins Ketu and Cancer is no one's debilitation sign for Ketu, so Ch. 59 Sl. 3-4 is not met.
  • Saturn Mahadasha, 17 January 2029 to 18 January 2048: Ketu's sub-period falls under Ch. 57 Sl. 20-21, since Ketu is in Randhr from the Lagna.
  • Rahu Mahadasha, 18 January 1995 to 18 January 2013: Ketu is not joined with the Moon, so Ch. 55 Sl. 40-41 does not apply; whether Ketu is "without strength" for Sl. 43-45 the text does not define.
  • Kaal Sarp: not present.

Checking a Ketu in the 8th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the birth time: Ketu's sign barely depends on it, its house entirely (what a missing birth time costs). Within two degrees of a sign boundary, the mean or true node can decide the sign.
  2. List any planet in the 8th with Ketu; by the agent rule its lordships are what Ketu mostly delivers. A benefic there is the sutra's first softening condition. Failing that, list the planets aspecting it; failing both, read the lord of the 8th.
  3. Judge the 8th lord: its dignity (the sutra's top tier needs it strong or exalted), its other house from the table above, and its house counted from Ketu for Chatterjee's item 22.
  4. Note Ketu's sign: Scorpio, Virgo or Aries brings Chamatkar Chintamani's wealth exception; Taurus or Gemini is debilitation in some schemes, the Ketu-Ketu hard case.
  5. Test Ketu's Mahadasha and sub-periods in the Vimshottari Dasha calculator against the tables above, and the 8th lord's strength in the Shad Bala calculator.
  6. Read the other end of the axis in Rahu in the 2nd house, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Is Ketu in the 8th house bad?
BPHS puts a Ketu period from the 8th in its hardest group and Phaldeepika reads it harshly. But the shared Bhrigu sutra improves with a benefic or a strong 8th lord, and Chamatkar Chintamani gives wealth in Scorpio, Virgo or Aries. The 8th lord's condition is the first thing the texts ask about.
Does Ketu have its own Bhrigu sutra for the 8th?
No. Sutras 22-23 cover "Rahu or Ketu"; the translator notes the author gives both nodes the same effects. Ketu's own lines are the Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines quoted under Other Views.
My 8th lord is strong. Does the app take that into account?
No. The row prints the same testing sentence for every Ketu in the 8th without checking the 8th lord. The shared sutra reads a strong or exalted 8th lord as its best tier. Check the lord with the Shad Bala calculator.
Does Ketu in the 8th say anything about life span?
The shared Bhrigu sutra gives fixed life-spans and BPHS lists the nodes in the 8th among the Marakas. This app computes no longevity and does not repeat those figures; Chatterjee writes that a node alone in the 8th "may not cut short life".
Does BPHS release Ketu in the 8th if a benefic aspects it?
Not in Ch. 44: the release there is written for Rahu. For Ketu, the benefic routes are the sutra's tier and the Rahu-Mahadasha sub-period rule (Ch. 55 Sl. 40-41), where benefics bring gains.
Is my Ketu in the 8th exalted or debilitated?
The texts disagree. BPHS exalts Ketu in Scorpio; Uttara Kalamrita adds a fall in Taurus; Sanketnidhi exalts it in Sagittarius; Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara exalts it in Scorpio and Sagittarius and debilitates it in Taurus and Gemini; and a strong school gives the nodes no sign at all. This app follows the last and assigns Ketu no dignity.
Does Ketu in the 8th make someone spiritual?
No text in the corpus says so for this house. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara gives a well-placed Ketu a meditative influence in general, without naming the 8th. The read-as-8th version of Chatterjee's item 15 mentions strange dreams, but its house number is unclear in the scan.
What does Saravali say?
Nothing. Its chapter on planets in the houses has no line for Rahu or Ketu, and its only node lines name Rahu in other houses.
