Planet in house

What the Bhrigu Sutras, Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani, BPHS and two modern books actually say about Rahu in the 8th house, checked against the texts: the shared sutra, the Dasha and sub-period rules, the 8th lord Rahu speaks for, and how this app reads it.

If there is one placement of Rahu that the classical books read as hard, it is the 8th. The Bhrigu Sutras, Phaldeepika and BPHS's Dasha chapter all read it on the difficult side, and a modern author calls it a liability. But nearly every one of those lines comes with a condition attached, one quoted authority reads the placement partly well, and one of BPHS's sub-period rules names the 8th as a house where Rahu brings a meeting with the ruler. This page sets out each line as the book prints it, with its condition, and then what this app prints. For the node itself, see Rahu in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 8th house (Randhra Bhava).

Where these citations come from

Every classical line here was read in the source books for this page: the Bhrigu Sutras (Part II Ch. 8, pp. 112-115), Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali, S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II and Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Phaldeepika, Chamatkar Chintamani and Uttara Kalamrita are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them, not from their own editions. The 8th is the house of longevity: the texts give life-span figures for this placement, and this page names that they do without repeating them. Health entries are what the texts say, not medical advice.

The house Rahu occupies here

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 9 gives Randhr Bhava "longevity, battle, enemies, forts, wealth of the dead" and things that have happened and are to happen, which the translator glosses as past and future births. The Bhrigu Sutras' own list of house significations (Part I, p. 15) is longer and darker: length of life, inheritance, legacies, wills, insurance, pension and gratuity, accidents, chronic disease, and a run of words for loss and obstruction, from misfortune and strife to delay and defeat. Rama R. Rao's Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 117) keeps close to Parashara: longevity, quarrels, enemies, forts, "wealth through inheritance", past and future lives.

The same book sorts the 8th into three groups at once (p. 117): a panapara or succeedent house, a trika or "evil" house with the 6th and 12th, and a chaturasra with the 4th. It is not an upachaya, the growth houses 3, 6, 10 and 11, so unlike the 6th it has no growth-house exception to weigh against its trika status. That matters for Rahu more than for most grahas, because BPHS gives the nodes their best results in exactly the upachayas (Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20, below). Its karaka in the same book (p. 118) is Saturn.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 16 gives the base rule for the nodes: Rahu and Ketu "give predominantly the effects" of a bhava lord they join, or of the bhava they occupy. The Yoga Karaka rule of Sl. 17 needs a node in a kendra, with or aspected by a kendra or kona lord, so it does not reach a Rahu in the 8th. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara (p. 142, rule 10) says the same in plainer words: because the nodes own no houses, they give results by "their position, association and the rulers of the houses occupied by them".

The Bhrigu sutra for the 8th, shared with Ketu

The Bhrigu Sutras do not give Rahu a sutra of its own here. The translator's note at the head of Part II Ch. 8 says the author gives the same effects for Rahu and Ketu in every house, presumably because they are always seventh from each other, while "the other authorities" give them separately. So Sutras 22-23 are headed "Rahu or Ketu in the Eighth House", and the same words appear on Ketu in the 8th house. What is Rahu's alone on this page are the lines the book quotes from Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani.

Sutras 22-23 (p. 112) read the native as "very sickly", and then give a life-span in years: one figure for the node alone, a longer one if the node is associated with a benefic, and a longer one again if the lord of the 8th is strong or in its exaltation sign. This app does not compute length of life and this page does not repeat the figures. What can be said without them is the shape of the sutra: one unconditional health statement, followed by a ladder of two conditions, the benefic with the node and the strong or exalted 8th lord, each of which moves the reading up.

An earlier version of this page summarised the sutra as poor health "eased" by a benefic or a strong 8th lord. That was a misreading: the two conditions lengthen the life-span figure; the "very sickly" line stands without a condition.

What Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani add for Rahu

Under "Other Views" on p. 113 the Bhrigu Sutras quote two older works, each with a separate line for Rahu and for Ketu. Brihat Jataka and Saravali are not among them: the book says at the 1st house that neither deals with the nodes in the houses.

Chamatkar Chintamani, as quoted there (p. 113)Windy troubles; deprived of paternal property; treated as an outcast by relations; respected by the king and learned men, little regarded by familyNone

Read in bhrigu-sutras.txt (pp. 112-113), saravali.txt Ch. 30 and bphs.txt Ch. 19. Paraphrased except where quoted.

The previous version of this page said no Phaldeepika line was reported for Rahu in the 8th. There is one, and it is the harshest of the three: distress, rheumatic trouble, few children, a short life and evil deeds, with no condition at all. It is reported here because it is what the book prints; it describes a classical reading, not a person.

Chamatkar Chintamani is the mixed one. Its first half is hard: windy troubles, the loss of paternal property and rejection by relations. Its second half is the line the earlier page quoted alone: respect from the king and the learned, little regard from the family. Read as a whole it is a split verdict, standing outside the family and standing within the wider world, and it is the only line quoted for this house that has a favourable clause. Note that the paternal-property clause touches the 8th's own subject, "wealth of the dead", from the side of loss.

Neither line carries a sign condition for Rahu. The Ketu lines printed beside them do: Chamatkar Chintamani reverses Ketu's shortage of funds when Ketu is in Scorpio, Virgo or Aries. There is no equivalent exception for Rahu in the 8th in this book, and this page does not borrow Ketu's.

Why Saravali says nothing, and why that is not a verdict

Saravali's chapter on the planets in the bhavas, Ch. 30, deals with the seven grahas and does not mention Rahu or Ketu once. The book's only node-and-house lines are in Ch. 12, on evils cancelled at birth: Rahu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th aspected by benefics, and Rahu in the Ascendant in Aries, Taurus or Cancer. Neither names the 8th. Ch. 10 has longevity lines with Rahu in other houses, which are not used here. So Saravali has no reading for Rahu in the 8th, favourable or unfavourable, and the gap is left empty rather than filled from another book.

What BPHS says about the Rahu Dasha from the 8th

BPHS has no natal line for Rahu in the 8th, but its Dasha chapters name the house repeatedly. They agree with each other on the main point and differ in the conditions.

BPHS passageWhat it says, as it bears on Rahu in the 8th
Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6A Dasha is unfavourable if its lord is in Ari, Randhr or Vyaya (6th, 8th, 12th), in debility or an enemy sign, judged at the start of the Dasha
Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43Rahu in Randhr or Vyaya: "all kinds of troubles and distress" in his Dasha; with a malefic or a Marak graha, or debilitated: loss of position and home, mental agony, trouble to wife and children
Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 (timing)Loss of wealth at the start, some relief and gain in one's own country in the middle, distress and anxiety at the end
Ch. 44 Sl. 22-24Nodes in the 1st, 7th, 8th or 12th are listed as Marakas; Rahu in Ari, Randhr or Vyaya gives difficulties in his Dasha, but not if a benefic aspects or joins him
Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8A graha in Ari, Randhr or Vyaya at the start of its Dasha yields adverse results; birth and Dasha-start placement both to be weighed
Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20Dashas of grahas placed in Randhr are unfavourable; the parenthesis "(Rahu and Ketu give favourable results in Sahaj, Ari and Labh)" does not include the 8th
Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4Results timed by decanate, always in reverse order for the nodes
Read in bphs.txt (Ch. 44: 4357-4364; Ch. 47: 5386-5460; Ch. 48: 5555-5580). Paraphrased except where quoted.

Four passages put the 8th on the unfavourable side, and only one offers a release: Ch. 44's benefic. That release is written for Rahu by name ("He will not, however, do so, if Rahu receives a Drishti from, or is yuti with a benefic"); the Marak label in the same sloka is not released, and this page reports the label without reading anything from it, since this app does not time lifespan.

Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 1/2 complicates things in a way the text does not resolve. It gives a fine Rahu Dasha when Rahu is in his exaltation sign "etc.", and BPHS exalts Rahu in Taurus, gives Gemini as his moolatrikona, and Aquarius (with "some sages" Virgo) as his own sign. For Libra rising, Taurus is the 8th; for Scorpio rising, Gemini; for Cancer rising, Aquarius; for Aquarius rising, Virgo. In those four charts the dignity rule of Sl. 34-39 and the house rule of Sl. 40-43 point opposite ways, and BPHS does not say which wins. The second favourable list in the same passage, Rahu with benefics in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 11th or 3rd, does not include the 8th.

The shape the text gives the troubled Dasha

Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 do not describe eighteen uniform years. As the Rahu Mahadasha page also reports, they give loss at the start, some relief and gain in one's own country in the middle, and distress and anxiety at the end. A separate rule, Sl. 3-4, places a graha's results at the start, middle or end of its Dasha by the third of the sign it occupies, reversed for a retrograde graha, and the text adds that the Dasha effects of Rahu and Ketu, "who are always retrograde", are always realised in reverse. A Rahu in the first ten degrees of its sign is read as delivering at the end, one in the last ten at the start, one in the middle ten in the middle. The text does not say how this decanate rule combines with the fixed shape of Sl. 40-43, and this page does not guess.

Rahu sub-periods when Rahu is in the 8th

BPHS gives a separate passage for Rahu's sub-period (Antardasha) inside each of the nine Mahadashas, Ch. 52 to Ch. 60. Most of them count the hard houses from the Mahadasha lord, not from the Lagna, so they only touch a natal 8th-house Rahu when the Mahadasha lord sits in the Lagna. A few name the 8th from the Lagna, or simply "Randhr", and those are the ones that bear directly on this page. The text adds remedial measures to several of them, which this app does not prescribe.

Mahadasha (BPHS chapter)Rahu Antardasha rule touching the 8th
Rahu (Ch. 55 Sl. 5-6)Rahu in Randhr or Vyaya, or with malefics: danger from thieves, wounds, conflict with officials, trouble to kin, wife and children

Mercury (Ch. 58 Sl. 51)Rahu in Sahaj, Randhr, Karm or Labh: a meeting or conversation with the king; with a benefic, a visit to a new king
Mercury (Ch. 58 Sl. 52-53)Rahu with a malefic in the 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord: hard work under pressure, loss of position, illness

Jupiter (Ch. 56 Sl. 76-78)Rahu with a malefic, or in the 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord: quarrels, domestic trouble
Venus (Ch. 60 Sl. 42-44)Rahu with a malefic in the 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord: trouble to self and parents
Saturn (Ch. 57 Sl. 65-68)No 8th-house rule; opulence if Rahu is in Aries, Virgo, Cancer, Taurus, Pisces or Sagittarius
Read in bphs.txt, Ch. 52-60 (lines 6060-7686). Paraphrased; remedies omitted.

Two things stand out. First, the Mercury chapter is the one place in BPHS where the bare 8th appears on the favourable side for Rahu: in the Mercury Mahadasha, Rahu's sub-period brings a meeting with the ruler when Rahu is in the 3rd, 8th, 10th or 11th. The next sloka gives the hard case only when Rahu is joined by a malefic. Second, the sign lists in the Saturn and Mercury chapters can reach an 8th-house Rahu: Ch. 57 Sl. 68 gives opulence in Saturn's Mahadasha when Rahu is in Aries, Virgo, Cancer, Taurus, Pisces or Sagittarius, and Ch. 58 Sl. 47-49 a good Rahu sub-period, after a bad start, in Aries, Aquarius, Virgo or Taurus, with no house condition attached.

Rahu speaks for others: the agent rule and the 8th lord

The Bhrigu Sutras close Ch. 8 with a comment (pp. 114-115) on "a strong school of thought" that the nodes own no signs. On that view Rahu acts as agent for the planet conjoined with it; if none, for the planet aspecting it; only when it is neither conjoined nor aspected does it represent the lord of the sign it occupies. For an 8th-house Rahu, the last case is the lord of the 8th itself.

The same comment quotes three points from Uttara Kalamrita. The first is the one that matters most for the 8th: the nodes, "if endowed with strength", produce effects like the planet owning the inauspicious house in whose house they are posited or with whom they are conjoined. A lone Rahu in the 8th is in exactly that position, in the house of an inauspicious lord. The second and third points describe when the nodes turn auspicious: in a trikona or kendra, or associated with the lord of the kendra or kona they occupy, or conjoined with any kendra or kona lord. The 8th is neither, so for Rahu here only the last route is open: a conjunction with a kendra or kona lord.

BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 then say what kind of planet the 8th lord is. Its effects, like the 12th lord's, "will depend on their association". It is "not auspicious", as the lord of the 12th from the 9th. If it also owns the 3rd, 7th or 11th it is "specifically harmful"; if it also owns a kona, its effects turn auspicious. And the 8th lordship of the Sun and Moon "is not evil". Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 add that the Dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord turns favourable when it is associated with a trikona lord. Applied by rising sign, the 8th lord Rahu speaks for falls into three groups.

Whole-sign arithmetic from BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 (bphs.txt 3465-3475). The table judges the 8th lord, not Rahu.

So two charts with Rahu in the 8th can differ sharply by rising sign alone. Five rising signs make the 8th lord specifically harmful; three give it a kona, two make it a luminary, and two (Aries and Libra) make it the Lagna lord as well. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign, from which the 8th lord follows. The 8th-house page also covers Sarala Yoga, formed by the 8th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th, which this app computes; it concerns the lord, not Rahu.

One BPHS line names Rahu and the 8th together outside the Dasha chapters. Ch. 21 Sl. 6, in the Karm Bhava chapter, reads the 10th lord placed in Randhr along with Rahu as hostile to others, foolish and given to bad deeds. It is a combination, not Rahu alone, and it applies only where the 10th lord has joined Rahu in the 8th.

Where the books disagree about Rahu's signs, and why it matters here

Because several of the rules above turn on Rahu's dignity, the disagreement over his signs is not academic. The books give at least four schemes.

SourceExaltedDebilitatedMoolatrikonaOwn sign
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 1/2Taurus-GeminiAquarius; "some sages" Virgo
Uttara Kalamrita, via Bhrigu Sutras Part I p. 13TaurusScorpioGeminiAquarius
Sanketnidhi, via Bhrigu Sutras Part I p. 13Gemini--Virgo
Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara pp. 82-83Taurus and GeminiScorpio and Sagittarius-Capricorn
A dash means the source gives none. The Bhrigu Sutras also report the school that gives the nodes no signs at all.

For an 8th-house Rahu the consequences are concrete. Libra rising puts Rahu in Taurus in the 8th: exalted in every scheme that names Taurus. Scorpio rising puts him in Gemini: moolatrikona for BPHS, exalted for Sanketnidhi and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara. Aries rising puts him in Scorpio, debilitated for Uttara Kalamrita and Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara, which is the Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 case of a debilitated Rahu on top of the 8th. Taurus rising puts him in Sagittarius, debilitated for Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara only. Leo rising puts him in Capricorn, Rahu's own sign in that book alone.

Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara also gives Rahu the 3rd, 7th and 10th aspects (p. 82). BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5 give special aspects only to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars, and this app follows BPHS: Rahu aspects the 7th from himself only. From the 8th, the 7th aspect falls on the 2nd. On Rao's scheme Rahu in the 8th would also aspect the 10th and the 5th, so a reader using her book would bring career and children into this placement where this app does not. The same book (p. 83) says that if Rahu is well placed "he will bestow power and material success", without saying which houses count as well placed.

What a modern author adds

S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (2000) collects rules for reading good and bad periods (pp. 123-125). Three of them bear on Rahu in the 8th. Item 14 takes Rahu in the 6th, 8th or 12th aspected by the lords of those houses as the gravest case for the Rahu Dasha, and adds R. Santhanam's view that "Rahu in 8/12th is a liability". The same Santhanam line is repeated on p. 128, where the author applies it to an example chart to explain why a Rahu Dasha brought no significant events. Item 22 says the nodes in the 6th, 8th or 12th from their dispositors give very bad results; for a lone Rahu in the 8th the dispositor is the 8th lord, so the rule is about where that lord sits. These are one modern author's rules, partly drawn from magazine articles he cites, not classical slokas.

On p. 185, in a passage on longevity, the same author writes that Mars, Rahu or Ketu alone in the 8th, or Mars with a node there, "may not cut short life"; the danger case he names needs the Moon closely joined with them near the cusp. This page reports the line because it is the one modern statement in the corpus that reads a lone Rahu in the 8th as less serious than its reputation, and keeps the longevity discussion at that.

The conditions, gathered

  • A benefic joined with Rahu: lengthens the sutra's life-span figure (Bhrigu Sutras 22-23) and releases the Ch. 44 difficulties. A benefic aspecting Rahu releases Ch. 44 too.
  • A strong or exalted 8th lord: the sutra's third, best tier. It is also Rahu's dispositor, so Ch. 34 Sl. 16 and Uttara Kalamrita point at it as well.
  • The 8th lord's other house: a kona or the Lagna helps, the 3rd, 7th or 11th is "specifically harmful", the Sun or Moon as 8th lord carries no blemish.
  • Rahu with a malefic or a Marak graha, or debilitated: the Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 case of loss of position and strain at home, and the trigger in most of the sub-period rules.
  • Rahu in Taurus or Gemini in the 8th: the dignity rule of Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 pulls the other way, unresolved.
  • Rahu conjoined with a kendra or kona lord: the one route Uttara Kalamrita leaves for a node in the 8th to turn auspicious.

Ketu in the 2nd and the single aspect

This app gives Rahu the 7th aspect only, following BPHS Ch. 26 Sl. 2-5. From the 8th it falls on the 2nd, the house of wealth and family, where Ketu always is. Since the Bhrigu Sutras use one set of sutras for both nodes, the sutras for the 2nd describe Ketu there as much as Rahu. The 2nd-house side is on Ketu in the 2nd house, and the reverse arrangement on Rahu in the 2nd house.

The axis joins the 8th's "wealth of the dead" to the 2nd's family wealth, and BPHS's Dasha chapters treat both ends as hard for the nodes: Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 put Ketu in the 2nd with the 8th and 12th, and nearly every Rahu and Ketu sub-period rule gives the 2nd "physical distress". A planet sitting with Ketu in the 2nd aspects Rahu in the 8th, and by the agent rule above would be the first planet Rahu speaks for.

How this app reads Rahu in the 8th

The engine returns Neutral for Rahu's dignity in every sign and treats the 8th as a dusthana, so on the Kundali page every Rahu in the 8th gets the testing sentence: "classically more testing, tending toward real hardship and reduced vitality". The favourable wording written for this house, "genuine resilience and longevity", is in the code but no Rahu in the 8th can reach it. The sentence does not look at the 8th lord, a benefic with Rahu, or the sign, which are the conditions the texts actually attach. (An earlier version of this page quoted the sentence with "when the 8th lord is weak" at the end; the current string has no such clause.)

The Mahadasha line applies BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, which put the 6th, 8th and 12th on the unfavourable side, so it reads testing and the quality label reads challenging. Here the app and the Dasha chapters agree. What the app does not apply is the release: Ch. 44's benefic exception, the dignity rule of Sl. 34-39 and the Mercury sub-period rule are not coded. Career and Money adds Rahu to its risk-appetite reading at a fixed weight of 0.75 when Rahu is in the 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th or 12th, and says in its own text that this is a fixed weight because Rahu has no Shad Bala in the code.

In transit the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon and marks the 1st, 8th and 12th from the Moon as testing for the malefics, Rahu among them, so transiting Rahu in the 8th from the Moon is shown as testing. That is the Moon count, not the natal house. The nodes stay about 18 months in a sign, as the Bhrigu Sutras note (Part I, p. 13). Dates for the period itself come from the Vimshottari Dasha calculator.

A worked chart

An illustrative birth, not a real person. We ran the engine for 10 March 1995, 07:00 IST, New Delhi. Pisces rises at 1.89 degrees, so Libra is the 8th. Rahu is at 14.37 Libra in Swati pada 3, in the 8th house; Ketu is at 14.37 Aries in the 2nd. Rahu's dispositor Venus, lord of the 3rd and the 8th for Pisces rising, is at 14.62 Capricorn in the 11th, in a friendly sign. Mars, retrograde and debilitated at 20.73 Cancer in the 5th, aspects the 8th by its special 4th-house aspect. The Moon is at 2.13 Gemini in the 4th, Jupiter in Scorpio in the 9th, the Sun and Saturn in Aquarius in the 12th, Mercury in Capricorn in the 11th.

  • Placement sentence: Neutral, favourable false: "Rahu in your 8th house in Libra - classically more testing, tending toward real hardship and reduced vitality."
  • Mahadasha line: testing; quality challenging.
  • Dates: a Mars balance to 26 July 1997, then Rahu's Mahadasha to 26 July 2015. Mercury's Mahadasha runs 25 July 2050 to 26 July 2067.
  • Career and Money: Rahu on the money axis, at the fixed weight. Kaal Sarp: not present.

Checked by hand against the conditions. No planet is conjoined with Rahu, and no benefic aspects him: Jupiter from the 9th aspects the 1st, 3rd and 5th, and Venus and Mercury from the 11th aspect the 5th. So neither the sutra's benefic tier nor Ch. 44's release applies. The 8th lord, Venus, is in a friendly sign in the 11th, a house of gains, but not exalted; whether that is "strong" in the sutra's sense needs a strength figure the text does not define. For Pisces rising Venus owns both the 3rd and the 8th, the case BPHS Ch. 34 calls specifically harmful.

By the agent rule, Rahu is not conjoined, so he acts first for the planet aspecting him: Mars. For Pisces rising Mars owns the 2nd and the 9th, a Marak house and a kona. That is an aspect, not the conjunction Uttara Kalamrita needs for its auspicious route, and whether "associated with a malefic" in Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 covers an aspect the text does not say; this page leaves it open. Rahu at 14.37 degrees is in the middle third of Libra, so the reversed decanate rule leaves him in the middle of his Dasha. Libra is in none of the dignity schemes above, and none of the sign lists in the Saturn and Mercury sub-period chapters. One favourable rule does reach this chart: in Mercury's Mahadasha, Rahu's sub-period in the 8th is the Ch. 58 Sl. 51 case of a meeting with the ruler. This chart sits on the harder side of most conditions, with one open question about Venus's strength.

Checking Rahu in your own 8th house

  1. Cast the chart in the birth chart calculator with an exact time and confirm Rahu's house; what a missing birth time costs explains why the house depends on it.
  2. List grahas joined with Rahu and those aspecting the 8th. A benefic is the release in two sources; by the agent rule the first of them is the planet Rahu speaks for.
  3. Judge the 8th lord, Rahu's dispositor: its house, its dignity, its company. The Shad Bala calculator gives a strength figure for it.
  4. Note which other house the 8th lord owns, from the table above.
  5. Note Rahu's sign against the four dignity schemes, and any malefic joined with Rahu; that is the Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 case.
  6. Note Rahu's degree for the reversed decanate timing, read the dates, and check the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator if every graha lies on one side of the nodes.
Is Rahu in the 8th house bad?
Phaldeepika and BPHS's Dasha chapter read it harshly, and Chatterjee quotes Santhanam calling it a liability. But BPHS Ch. 44 releases the Dasha difficulty if a benefic joins or aspects Rahu, the Bhrigu sutra improves with a benefic or a strong 8th lord, and Chamatkar Chintamani gives respect from the king and the learned alongside its harder clauses.
Does Rahu have its own Bhrigu sutra for the 8th?
No. Sutras 22-23 are for "Rahu or Ketu"; the translator notes the author gives both nodes the same effects. Only the Phaldeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani lines quoted under Other Views are Rahu's alone.
Does the app check the 8th lord?
No. It picks the sentence by Rahu's dignity and the dusthana rule, so every Rahu in the 8th gets the testing line. The 8th lord's strength, which the sutra makes decisive, is for you to check.
Does Rahu in the 8th affect longevity?
The Bhrigu sutra gives fixed life-spans for this placement and BPHS lists the nodes in the 8th among the Marakas. This app does not calculate or state lifespan, and this page does not repeat those figures. Chatterjee writes that a node alone in the 8th "may not cut short life".
What does Saravali say?
Nothing. Its chapter on planets in the houses has no line for Rahu or Ketu, and its only node lines name other houses.
What shape does the troubled Rahu Dasha take?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 give losses at the start, some relief in one's own country in the middle and anxiety at the end. The decanate rule of Sl. 3-4, reversed for the nodes, is a separate timing rule the text does not combine with it.
Is there any favourable sub-period rule for Rahu in the 8th?
One: BPHS Ch. 58 Sl. 51 gives a meeting with the ruler in Rahu's sub-period of Mercury's Mahadasha when Rahu is in the 3rd, 8th, 10th or 11th. The sign lists of Ch. 57 Sl. 68 and Ch. 58 Sl. 47-49 can also reach an 8th-house Rahu.
What does Ketu in the 2nd add?
It is always opposite and the two aspect each other. See Ketu in the 2nd house.
How does the 8th compare with the 12th?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 and Santhanam name the two together. See Rahu in the 12th house.
