Jupiter in the 10th house gathers more favourable statements than almost any other placement on this site. The Bhrigu Sutras give righteous deeds, great ability and a wide reputation; Saravali gives successful beginnings, honour, wealth and fame; BPHS lists the 10th among the houses that make Jupiter's own dasha favourable; and the 10th is one of the four angles in which Hamsa Yoga, Amala Yoga and Gaja Kesari can form. The qualifications are of an unusual kind. The sutra's condition is not about Jupiter at all but about the 10th lord, and BPHS's lordship chapter says a benefic owning angles loses its benefic effect.
This page sets those statements side by side, with what Jupiter owns from each rising sign, how this app grades it, and one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 10th house, Karma Bhava.
Sources
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Ministers and kings in the texts are read as rank and recognition from an institution. Nothing here is a forecast about your career.
The great benefic in the strongest angle
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives the 10th authority, place, profession or livelihood, honour, the father, living in foreign lands and debts, and Ch. 21 reads it as a house of deeds. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 rank the angles in ascending order, so the 10th counts most of the four, and Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 say a Yoga Karaka in Karma Bhava "will be significantly so".
Jupiter, in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13, "confers Knowledge and happiness", and it is the house significator BPHS uses most: Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make it karaka of the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th. The 10th is not one of them; its karaka in that list is Mercury. BPHS Ch. 10 Sl. 2 says that with Mercury, Jupiter or Venus in an angle from the Lagna "all evils are destroyed", Ch. 12 Sl. 5-7 give such a planet in an angle or trine long life, wealth, intelligence and the king's liking, and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 18 (p. 17) says that with the Moon-sign lord, the Lagna lord or Jupiter in an angle the native is happy in the middle of life. The 10th is such an angle.
What the verses say
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 46-49
Sutras 46-49 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 83, corpus line 3311): religious minded, righteous deeds, studies the Geeta, very able, a widespread reputation, respected by the masses. If the 10th lord is strong, high-class religious sacrifices. If the 10th lord is with a malefic or in a malefic's house, obstacles in the professional career, evil deeds and financial suffering. The app's testing line for Jupiter in the 10th uses the career and money words almost exactly. The commentator (pp. 83-84) names Hamsa for Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign here and Amala Yoga (printed "Amia") for a natural benefic in the 10th, and calls Jupiter in Sagittarius or Pisces in the 10th "a powerful Rajayoga".
Of the other authorities the Bhrigu Sutras quote (p. 84), Brihat Jatak gives wealth; Phaldeepika great wealth, the king's favour, praiseworthy conduct and reputation; Chamatkar Chintamani a flag over the native's house, a reputation beyond his forefathers, and unhappiness in regard to children. The Note says all agree with the sutras except Chamatkar Chintamani on children.
The condition is worth reading slowly. Every other planet's 10th-house sutra is conditioned chiefly on that planet's own company or sign. Jupiter's is conditioned on the 10th lord's. Only for Gemini and Pisces rising, where Jupiter is itself the 10th lord, are the two the same planet; for every other Lagna the sutra sends the reader to a second planet before Jupiter's own reading can be taken as it stands.
Saravali, from the Ascendant and from the Moon
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 59 (p. 104): a successful beginning in his undertakings, honourable, effortful, abundant welfare, happiness, wealth, relatives, conveyances and fame. Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 8-13 (p. 120) read Jupiter in the 10th from the Moon as successful in achieving his desires, righteous, affluent, of excellent history among men, a king's minister and famous. That is one of the four Gaja Kesari positions. Ch. 33 Sl. 2 judges the house from whichever of the Ascendant and Moon is stronger.

Jupiter beside the other planets in the 10th
| Planet in the 10th | Bhrigu Sutras reading | The stated condition |
|---|---|---|
| Sun (88-95) | Distinction in education, fame, capability | Its own sign or company |
| Moon (54-60) | High attainment, pious deeds, fame | Its own company; a strong 10th lord adds virtue |
| Mars (75-85) | Acclaimed, fortunate, prosperous | Its own company, and the 9th or 10th lord |
| Mercury (67-70) | Success through virtuous deeds | Its own sign or company; Jupiter's company upgrades it |
| Jupiter (46-49) | Righteous deeds, wide reputation | The 10th lord's company or sign |
| Venus (59-61) | "Full of glory" | With Mercury, Jupiter and the Moon: many Raja Yogas |
| Saturn (44-45) | A Ganges bath in the 25th year; stingy, bilious | Its own company: a malefic obstructs, a benefic brings success |
Read down the last column and Jupiter is the planet the others lean on. Mercury's sutra is upgraded by Jupiter's company; Venus's Raja Yoga recipe needs Jupiter; the Moon's sutra, like Jupiter's, looks to the 10th lord. Jupiter is the one occupant whose reading is not reversed by its own malefic company in the summary. That is a statement about the sutra, not a claim that company does not matter: for the Sun, Mars, Mercury, Venus and Saturn a malefic's company turns the result here to obstruction.
Three yogas that form in the 10th
Hamsa
BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Hamsa when Jupiter is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle. In the 10th that happens for three rising signs: Gemini (Jupiter in Pisces), Libra (exalted in Cancer) and Pisces (Jupiter in Sagittarius, Moolatrikona to 10 degrees). The app keeps one line, "dignified and wise, drawn to meaning and comfort, generous in outlook", and the yogas calculator lists it. This site's engine sweep gives the share of Hamsa in any angle as 8.2 per cent of 40,000 sampled charts.
Amala
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6: exclusively a benefic in the 10th from the Lagna or the Moon, giving fame "lasting till Candr and stars exist", honour from the king, abundant pleasures, charity, fondness for relatives, helpfulness, piety and virtue. This app detects it when a natural benefic other than the Moon is in the 10th with no malefic joining or aspecting it. Jupiter, unlike Mercury, has no fixed tie to the Sun, so the Sun beside it is not the routine obstacle it is for Mercury. Any malefic aspect still stops it: any malefic in the 4th, Mars from the 7th or 3rd, Saturn from the 8th or 1st.
Company is read separately in Saravali Ch. 15, whose Jupiter pairs are given here with the harsher lines left out: with the Sun, virtuous, a king's minister; with the Moon, firm in friendship, wealthy; with Mars, intelligent, expert in speech; with Mercury, a scholar, wise and happy; with Venus, lives by learning and argument; with Saturn, heroic, wealthy, head of a town or an association. Sl. 23 adds that each result rises or falls with the vargas the two planets occupy. Several of those companions are, by Lagna, the partner lords below.
Gaja Kesari, and the Moon
This engine forms Gaja Kesari by BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4: Jupiter in an angle from the Lagna or the Moon, by whole sign, with a benefic's company or aspect, and no fall, combustion or enemy sign. Jupiter in the 10th from the Lagna is in an angle from the Lagna, so the first condition is always met; what remains is Venus, Mercury or the Moon in the 10th or the 4th, and a Jupiter outside Capricorn, its sign of fall.
The Moon's position still decides two readings at once. In the 10th or the 4th it joins or aspects Jupiter and completes the engine's Gaja Kesari; in the Lagna or the 7th it puts Jupiter in an angle from itself without touching it, and with the Moon in the Lagna Saravali Ch. 33's Jupiter-in-the-10th-from-the-Moon reading applies directly. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 26) warns of the simple Moon-and-Jupiter form that "In every Lunar month, for 9 days this Yoga exists".
The Kendra lordship blemish
BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7: "Benefics, owning Kendras, will not give benefic effects." Sl. 8-10 rank the blemish, and Jupiter's is second only to Venus's. For Gemini and Virgo rising Jupiter owns two angles and nothing else, Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 and 31-32 call it malefic, and this app lists Kendradhipathya Dosha for those Lagnas, graded mild, with the note that the benefic nature is muted, not reversed.
For Gemini rising, Jupiter in the 10th is in Pisces, its own sign, as 10th lord in the 10th: Hamsa and the blemish arrive together. For Virgo rising Jupiter in the 10th is in Gemini, an enemy's sign. For Pisces rising Jupiter owns the 1st and 10th, and BPHS makes the Lagna lord specially auspicious and names a Yoga of Jupiter with Mars for this Ascendant. The Bhrigu Sutras commentator (p. 84) reads these placements more warmly than Ch. 34: for Virgo and Sagittarius rising he calls Jupiter in the 10th a powerful Dhana yoga, and for Libra rising, citing Bhavartha Ratnakar, he holds that exalted Jupiter gives yoga effects in spite of owning the 3rd and 6th.
What Jupiter owns, from each rising sign
Jupiter is in your 10th when it occupies the tenth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. BPHS Ch. 24's slokas for each lord placed in the 10th apply twice, once for each house Jupiter rules.
| Ascendant | Jupiter's sign | Natural dignity | Jupiter rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 10th | BPHS Ch. 34 on Jupiter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Capricorn | Debilitated | 9th, 12th | Sl. 106: a king or equal, a minister. Sl. 142: expenditure through royal persons | Auspicious, unless under a malefic's sway |
| Taurus | Aquarius | Neutral | 8th, 11th | Sl. 94: short of livelihood, cancelled by a benefic aspect. Sl. 130: honoured by the king | Malefic; a maraka |
| Gemini | Pisces | Own | 7th, 10th | Sl. 82: religious, wealth, children. Sl. 118: skilful in all jobs | Malefic |
| Cancer | Aries | Friendly | 6th, 9th | Sl. 70: happy abroad, a gifted speaker. Sl. 106: a king or equal | Auspicious |
| Leo | Taurus | Enemy | 5th, 8th | Sl. 58: a Raj Yog, great fame. Sl. 94: short of livelihood unless a benefic aspects | Auspicious |
| Virgo | Gemini | Enemy | 4th, 7th | Sl. 46: royal honours. Sl. 82: religious, wealth | Malefic |
| Libra | Cancer | Exalted | 3rd, 6th | Sl. 34: self-made wealth. Sl. 70: happy abroad | Malefic |
| Scorpio | Leo | Friendly | 2nd, 5th | Sl. 22: honourable, learned, wealthy. Sl. 58: a Raj Yog | Auspicious |
| Sagittarius | Virgo | Enemy | 1st, 4th | Sl. 10: royal honour, self-earned wealth. Sl. 46: royal honours | Neutral |
| Capricorn | Libra | Enemy | 12th, 3rd | Sl. 142: expenditure. Sl. 34: self-made wealth | Malefic |
| Aquarius | Scorpio | Friendly | 11th, 2nd | Sl. 130: honoured by the king. Sl. 22: wealthy | Malefic; a maraka |
| Pisces | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona to 10 deg, then own | 1st, 10th | Sl. 10: royal honour. Sl. 118: skilful in all jobs | A Yoga, with Mars |
Jupiter's natural relations (BPHS Ch. 3) make Mercury and Venus enemies and Saturn neutral, so five of these rows sit in an enemy's sign by nature and Aries rising puts Jupiter in its fall. The rows where Jupiter is strongest by dignity, Gemini, Libra and Pisces, are three Lagnas for which Ch. 34 calls it malefic (Gemini, Libra) or names it only through a yoga (Pisces). The rows where Ch. 34 calls it auspicious, Aries, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio, place it in its fall, a friend's sign, an enemy's sign and a friend's sign. Dignity and lordship point different ways across most of the table, and the texts ask for both.
Two cautions BPHS attaches to Jupiter here
Two lines of Ch. 34 name Jupiter beside the 10th lord. For Aries rising (Sl. 19-22), "the mere Yuti of Sani with Guru will not produce auspicious effects", though Saturn owns the 10th and Jupiter the 9th, because Saturn's other house is the 11th. A Jupiter in the 10th for Aries rising is in Capricorn, Saturn's sign, so a Saturn in its own sign there is exactly that conjunction, and the same sloka adds that a Jupiter "at the disposal of a malefic" will give inauspicious results. For Leo rising (Sl. 29-30) the conjunction of Jupiter with Venus, the 10th lord, likewise "will not produce auspicious results", Venus also owning the 3rd; a Jupiter in the 10th for Leo is in Taurus, Venus's own sign.
Both cautions are about Sl. 15: a Kendra or Kona lord that also owns an evil house does not cause a Raj Yog by mere relationship. And both sit on top of the sutra's own condition, which for Aries rising reads the 10th lord Saturn's company and sign, and for Leo rising Venus's.
The partner-lord yogas
- Pisces rising: Jupiter (1st and 10th lord) in Sagittarius with Mars (9th lord) is the app's Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga, and the pair Ch. 34 names for Pisces.
- Cancer rising: Jupiter (9th lord) in Aries with Mars (10th lord, and Yoga Karaka for Cancer) is Dharma-Karmadhipati in the 10th.
- Gemini rising: Jupiter (10th lord) in Pisces with Saturn (9th lord) is Dharma-Karmadhipati in the engine, alongside Hamsa and the Kendra blemish. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 25-26 say the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction for Gemini "is similar to that for Mesh Lagn", so the Aries caution above applies here too.
- Aries rising: Jupiter (9th lord) in Capricorn with Saturn (10th lord) is the same yoga in the engine, and the one Ch. 34 says will not produce auspicious effects.
The engine's separate Kendra-Kona check also pairs Jupiter with the 10th lord as a trine lord for Leo and Scorpio rising (Jupiter rules the 5th for both). What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh such a list.
Aspects and strength
From the 10th, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 10) returns [4, 2, 6]: the 4th by the 7th aspect, the 2nd by the special 5th-place aspect, the 6th by the special 9th-place aspect. The 2nd is one of the four houses Jupiter signifies. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 19 and 26-29 add the "entire Drishti" of Mercury and Jupiter where other benefics add a quarter, for planets and for houses alike. The texts cited here state no specific result for these three aspects. See the 2nd house and the 4th house.
Like Mercury, Jupiter has its directional strength in the 1st (BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7-7 1/2), so this engine gives it 2 of 4 directional points in the 10th. Its aspects never reach the 1st from here, so the BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 21 Raj Yog for a 10th lord in its own or exaltation sign aspecting the Lagna cannot be met by a Jupiter in the 10th even for Gemini and Pisces rising; the sloka's second clause, "if benefics are in Kendras", is met by Jupiter here by house alone. Combustion within 11 degrees of the Sun, which this site's sweep measures at 7.3 per cent of days, zeroes the position score. The Shad Bala calculator shows each part.
Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign: Cancer (Libra rising) a scholar, charitable, famous, rich; Pisces (Gemini rising) knows the meaning of the Vedas, a headman in the king's service; Sagittarius (Pisces rising) a preceptor, lasting wealth, a minister. The enemy-sign rows read better than their dignity: Taurus (Leo rising) distinguished in speech and skill; Gemini (Virgo rising) affluent and eloquent; Virgo (Sagittarius rising) experienced in the shastras; Libra (Capricorn rising) foremost among fellow traders. Capricorn (Aries rising), the fall, gives grief, service to others and life in other countries; Aquarius (Taurus rising) is the other hard row.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Jupiter's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 10th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so the friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.
- Always favourable: Gemini (own), Libra (exalted) and Pisces (Moolatrikona or own).
- Never favourable: Aries (debilitated), and Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius and Capricorn, where Jupiter is in Venus's or Mercury's signs and reaches Neutral at best.
- Favourable only with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Cancer, Scorpio and Aquarius (otherwise Neutral) and Taurus (otherwise Enemy sign).
Set beside the sutra, the line reads Jupiter's dignity while the sutra reads the 10th lord's condition, so the two can disagree in either direction. Set beside Ch. 34, the line is favourable for three Lagnas where BPHS calls Jupiter malefic or neutral and never favourable for Leo, where Ch. 34 calls it auspicious. dashaQuality() grades the period good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign, neutral for friendly or neutral, challenging for enemy sign or fall.
Timing
Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 describe acquisition of kingdom, great felicity, recognition by Government, conveyances and clothes, devotion, happiness in respect of wife and children and success in religious sacrifices when Jupiter is exalted, in its own sign or Moolatrikona, in the 5th, 9th or 10th, or in its own or exalted Navamsa. The 10th is named outright, so a Jupiter in the 10th meets that condition by house alone, whatever its sign. Sl. 49-51 give the reverse for a debilitated, combust or malefic-joined Jupiter, or one in the 6th or 8th (loss of residence, anxiety, distress to children, loss of cattle), and add that the trouble belongs to the start of the period, with wealth, awards and recognition later.
Ch. 48 adds lordship. For Gemini and Pisces rising Jupiter's period is also the 10th lord's, which Sl. 5-8 head recognition from and awards by the government and this app words as "career recognition and advancement, often with public or institutional backing". For Aries and Cancer rising it is the 9th lord's. The app's favourable theme for Jupiter is "expansion, recognition, prosperity and progress in family, learning or spiritual life". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period.
For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon and rates Jupiter favourable in the 10th from it. There is a disagreement: Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 310) says Jupiter "gives good results in 2/5/7/9/11th" from the Moon and leaves out the 10th, which the app's source includes.

This app's engine output for 14:22 IST on 23 June 2014 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Libra-rising case: Jupiter exalted in the 10th as lord of the 3rd and 6th, the case where dignity and Ch. 34 point furthest apart. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.

Dignity readings line up: exalted, Hamsa, a favourable row, a good dasha grade, Strong. The Moon in Aries is 4th from Jupiter, but it sits in the 7th and neither joins nor aspects Jupiter, and no other benefic does, so the engine's Gaja Kesari does not form. The sutra's condition looks to the 10th lord, the Moon, which sits in Aries, a sign of Mars, with Ketu beside it: by the engine's list, the 10th lord is with a malefic. Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic for Libra, as owner of the 3rd and 6th. And Saturn, exalted in the Lagna, aspects the 10th by its 10th-place aspect, which removes the aspect score and rules out the engine's Amala Yoga.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentator, citing Bhavartha Ratnakar (p. 84), takes exactly this case, exalted Jupiter in the 10th for Libra rising, as giving yoga effects despite its 3rd and 6th lordship; Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 call it malefic. The two are listed, not reconciled.
Jupiter at 0.67 degrees of Cancer is in the first decanate, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the start of its period; it is not retrograde. The chart's Vimshottari runs Venus, Sun and Moon first, so Jupiter's sixteen years come after Rahu's. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm Jupiter is in the tenth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
- Find the 10th lord and check its company and sign: that is the sutra's condition.
- Read Jupiter's dignity from the table, then what it rules and both Ch. 24 slokas.
- For Aries and Leo rising, check whether the 10th lord sits with Jupiter: those are BPHS's two named cautions.
- Look for Hamsa, Amala and Gaja Kesari in the yogas list, and see where your Moon is.
- For Gemini and Virgo rising, read the Kendradhipathya entry as muted, not reversed.
The Dashamsa (D10) calculator gives a second look at career. Method and limits are on the methodology page.
Over-readings
- "Jupiter in the 10th always means a high position." The sutra conditions it on the 10th lord, and BPHS Ch. 34 tempers a benefic that owns angles.
- "Exalted Jupiter in the 10th is best for every Ascendant." Exaltation falls only to Libra rising, where Ch. 34 calls Jupiter malefic.
- "Hamsa in the 10th cancels the Kendra blemish." For Gemini rising the app lists both; they answer different questions.
- "Jupiter in the 10th aspects the Lagna." It aspects the 4th, 2nd and 6th.
- "Gaja Kesari means Jupiter in the 10th is doubly strong." The yoga adds a benefic's company or aspect to the angle; it says nothing of strength, and the engine finds it in about one chart in six.
- "The app's favourable line means the sutra's good case applies." The line reads Jupiter's dignity; the sutra reads the 10th lord.
Questions about Jupiter in the 10th
- Is Jupiter good in the 10th house?
- The verses are favourable: righteous deeds and a wide reputation (Bhrigu Sutras 46-49); honour, wealth and fame (Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 59). The sutras qualify it when the 10th lord is with a malefic or in a malefic's house.
- Which rising signs get Hamsa Yoga from Jupiter in the 10th?
- Gemini (Jupiter in Pisces), Libra (exalted in Cancer) and Pisces (Jupiter in Sagittarius).
- What does Jupiter aspect from the 10th?
- The 4th by its 7th aspect, the 2nd by its 5th-place aspect and the 6th by its 9th-place aspect.
- What is the Kendra lordship blemish?
- BPHS Ch. 34: a benefic owning angles does not give its benefic effects. For Gemini and Virgo rising Jupiter owns two angles; the app lists Kendradhipathya Dosha, graded mild.
- Why is my Jupiter in the 10th marked testing?
- Its dignity label is not Exalted, Own, Moolatrikona or Friendly. Aries rising (fall in Capricorn) and the four Lagnas that put it in Mercury's or Venus's signs never get the favourable line.
- Does Jupiter in the 10th give Amala Yoga?
- In this app, only with no malefic joining or aspecting it. BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6 ask that the 10th hold exclusively a benefic.
- Is a Jupiter dasha good with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 name the 10th among the houses for which Jupiter's dasha brings kingdom and recognition. The app grades the period by dignity: good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign.
- Does a Jupiter transit of the 10th from the Moon help?
- The app's transit rule rates it favourable. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 310) leaves the 10th off its list of good Jupiter transits.
