Jupiter in the 11th house puts the planet BPHS names as the significator of gains into the house of gains. The readings are among the warmest on this site: Saravali gives many gains, conveyances and servants; the Bhrigu Sutras give a learned, wealthy, widely known native, with effortless gains when the Moon joins. The provenance note on the engine's own Jupiter readings records that the sutras give almost no negative case for Jupiter here at all.
The disagreement this placement is known for is about children, not money: Saravali adds "limited education and few sons", and the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator rejects it. This page sets out both sides, the BPHS combinations that name Jupiter in the 11th, what Jupiter owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 11th house, Labha Bhava.
Sources, money and children
Every classical statement here was checked against the text of BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. Statements about gains are read as the direction and ease of income, not amounts. Statements about sons are the texts' and are reported as a disagreement between them, not as a forecast about anyone's family.
The karaka of the 11th in the 11th
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12 gives the house all articles, the son's wife, income, prosperity and quadrupeds. Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 name one significator for each house, and Jupiter is the significator of the 11th, one of the four houses it holds with the 2nd, 5th and 9th. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 49) calls Jupiter "the natural benefic and Dhanakaraka", the significator of wealth.
The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator discusses the old maxim that a karaka can harm the house it signifies, karako bhava nashaya; he names it under Mars in the 3rd (p. 49) and rejects it there, holding to the sutras' line, and it comes up again under Jupiter in the 2nd and 5th. He does not raise it for the 11th, and the sutras' own reading here is entirely favourable. This page records the karaka fact and draws no conclusion from it.
What the verses say
Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 60
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 60 (p. 104): "many gains, many conveyances and many servants, be virtuous, but will have limited education and few sons". No condition is stated.
The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 50-53
Sutras 50-53 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 85, corpus line 3365): learned, wealthy, a lot of financial gains; in the 32nd year horses to ride on, which the translator reads as conveyances, and a widespread reputation; with benefics and malefics together, elephants and pronounced good luck; with the Moon, effortless financial gains. The commentator reads the mixed-company sutra as saying one or two malefics cannot noticeably alter so strong a benefic combination, and calls Jupiter in the 11th for Aquarius rising (2nd and 11th lord) and Virgo rising (exalted, 4th and 7th lord) very powerful Dhana yogas. His general rule for the house, given under Saturn in the 11th (p. 107), also applies: all planets prosper in the 11th unless they are lords of the 6th, 8th or 12th.
The two disputes
The first is plain in the texts: Saravali says limited education, the Bhrigu Sutras say learned, and neither resolves the difference. The second is in the Bhrigu Sutras' Note (pp. 85-86): Phaldeepika as well as Saravali gives few children, Chamatkar Chintamani gives five, and the commentator calls the "few children" view "not maintainable" because Jupiter in the 11th aspects the 5th. The 5th is the house of children, and Jupiter is its significator too (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34). So the commentator's argument is that the karaka of children, aspecting the house of children, cannot be read as denying them.
| Source | Reading | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 60 | Many gains, conveyances and servants; virtuous | None in the verse |
| Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 60 | Limited education and few sons | None in the verse |
| Bhrigu Sutras 50-53 | Learned, wealthy, widely known; conveyances in the 32nd year | None |
| Bhrigu Sutras 50-53 | Elephants and pronounced good luck | With benefics and malefics together |
| Bhrigu Sutras 50-53 | Effortless gains | With the Moon |
| Phaldeepika, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it | Wealthy, fearless, long-lived; few children, many conveyances | None stated |
| Commentator | Rejects "few children" | Jupiter in the 11th aspects the 5th |
| This app, phJupiter11F | Strong, often effortless financial gains; one of Jupiter's most favourable placements | Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own or Friendly sign |
| This app, phJupiter11U | Gains that arrive with more complication than expected | Any other dignity |
The app's testing line is the mildest unfavourable sentence it has for Jupiter in any house: not a loss, but gains with complication. The provenance note in the engine's planet-house file explains why: for the 9th and 11th the source gives almost no negative case, so the testing line leans on general affliction caveats rather than invent a harsher one.
Jupiter beside the other planets in the 11th
| Planet in the 11th | Saravali Ch. 30 | Bhrigu Sutras |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Sl. 12: gathers money, successful; a serving temperament | Income from land; immense wealth in own sign or exalted |
| Moon | Sl. 24: wealthy, many sons, long-lived | Learned, sons; wealth without much effort; gains if the 11th lord is strong |
| Mars | Sl. 36: virtuous, happy, wealth and grains | Prosperity through dexterity |
| Mercury | Sl. 48: rich, learned, happy, long-lived | Many sources; right or wrong deeds |
| Jupiter | Sl. 60: many gains; limited education, few sons | Learned, wealthy, conveyances; effortless with the Moon |
| Venus | Sl. 72: "will gain abundantly" | Rightful or questionable means by company |
| Saturn | Sl. 84: "lasting riches" | Very wealthy, with obstacles |
Two contrasts stand out. Saravali gives the Moon many sons in the 11th and Jupiter, the karaka of children, few. And the sutras give both the Moon and Jupiter gains without effort, Jupiter on the condition that the Moon joins it, which makes the Moon the companion this reading turns on. The Bhrigu commentary (p. 107) says malefics fare better than benefics in the 11th; Jupiter is the case where the sutra gives that rule no foothold. Saravali's own closing rule in Ch. 30, Sl. 86-87 (printed "86-81"), says benefics strengthen the houses they occupy outside the 6th, 8th and 12th; for Mars and Saturn in the 11th its specific verses override that rule, but for Jupiter the general rule and the specific verse agree on gains.
The BPHS combinations that name Jupiter in the 11th
- Ch. 22 Sl. 6, in the 11th house's own chapter: Jupiter in the 11th, with the Moon in the 2nd and Venus in the 9th, is one of the graded combinations for gains. The sloka attaches a sum of Nishkas, left out here.
- Ch. 13 Sl. 9, in the 2nd house chapter: Jupiter in the 11th, Venus in the 2nd and a benefic in the 12th, with the 2nd lord joined with a benefic, gives expenses on religious or charitable grounds.
- Ch. 41 Sl. 2-8, the Yogas for Great Affluence: Sl. 3, Mercury in its own sign in the 5th with the Moon, Mars and Jupiter in the 11th; and Sl. 4, the Sun in Leo in the 5th with Saturn, the Moon and Jupiter in the 11th. This engine detects the family as "Dhan Yoga (Great Affluence)" only in full.
The Great Affluence forms fix the Lagna. Mercury in its own sign in the 5th means Gemini or Virgo there, so Aquarius or Taurus rising, and Jupiter in the 11th is then in Sagittarius or Pisces, its own signs. The Sun in Leo in the 5th means Sagittarius rising, with Jupiter in Libra in the 11th, an enemy's sign by nature. Both forms also put the Moon in the 11th with Jupiter, which is the sutra's effortless-gains case.
The Moon in the 2nd and the Moon in the 11th appear in different Jupiter combinations: the 2nd in Ch. 22 Sl. 6, the 11th in the sutra and Ch. 41. With the Moon in the 2nd, Jupiter in the 11th is in the 10th from the Moon, an angle, which meets the first condition of this engine's Gaja Kesari rule (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4); it still needs a benefic joining Jupiter or in the 5th to aspect it. With the Moon in the 11th, the Moon itself joins Jupiter, and this is the first of the four Gaja Kesari positions. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 26) cautions that the simple form exists "for 9 days" in every lunar month.
Two rules about benefics in the Upachayas
Saravali's Dhana Yoga verse, Ch. 13 Sl. 32, counts benefics in the Upachayas, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th: all of them there gives much wealth, two moderate wealth, one little, and "these can be deduced from the Moon also". A Jupiter in the 11th is always one benefic in an Upachaya, so it always contributes to that count; whether the verse's higher grades are reached depends on where Venus, Mercury and the Moon are.
BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 48 runs the other way: with all benefics in angles and malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, the native, "though may be of mean descent, will ascend the throne". It needs every benefic in an angle, so a Jupiter in the 11th rules it out. The two rules give a benefic in the 11th opposite roles, and the texts do not set them side by side.
Exchanges with the 11th lord
Ch. 22 Sl. 8-10 give gains for three exchanges of signs with the 11th lord, and a Jupiter in the 11th is half of each for particular Lagnas. The engine reports the full exchange as a Parivarthana Yoga.
- Sl. 8, the Lagna lord and the 11th lord: Sagittarius rising (Jupiter in Libra, Venus in Sagittarius) and Pisces rising (Jupiter in Capricorn, its fall, Saturn in Pisces).
- Sl. 9, the 2nd lord and the 11th lord, "abundant fortunes after marriage": Scorpio rising (Jupiter in Virgo, Mercury in Sagittarius). Ch. 13 Sl. 4 reads the same pair as wealth acquired.
- Sl. 10, the 3rd lord and the 11th lord, wealth "through co-borns": Libra rising (Jupiter in Leo, the Sun in Sagittarius) and Capricorn rising (Jupiter in Scorpio, Mars in Pisces).
Three of these five rows are among the Lagnas for which this app never prints Jupiter's favourable line, because the exchange puts Jupiter in a sign of Venus, Mercury or Saturn. The exchange rules read lordship; the planet row reads dignity.
Jupiter as the 11th lord: Taurus and Aquarius rising
Jupiter owns the 11th for Taurus (with the 8th) and Aquarius (with the 2nd) rising, and in both it sits in its own sign when it is in the 11th. Ch. 22 Sl. 2 gives many gains for the 11th lord in the 11th; Ch. 24 Sl. 131 gives gain in all undertakings and learning increasing day by day; Ch. 40 Sl. 12 gives gain through royal association when the 11th holds its own lord unaspected by a malefic, with the Atma Karaka at the same time joined with a benefic. The sutras' Moon condition is separate and still applies.
The two Lagnas then divide by the other house. For Aquarius rising Jupiter owns the 2nd and 11th: one planet holding both wealth houses, so the Ch. 13 pairings reduce to its condition, and Ch. 24 Sl. 23 gives the 2nd lord in the 11th all kinds of wealth. For Taurus rising Jupiter owns the 8th and 11th, the combination Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 calls "specifically harmful"; the commentator's exception covers 8th lords; and Ch. 24 Sl. 95 reads the 8th lord in the 11th by its company. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 23-24 and 41-42 call Jupiter malefic for both, and among the planets that inflict death for Taurus and Aquarius alike.
What Jupiter owns, from each rising sign
Jupiter is in your 11th when it occupies the eleventh sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours.
| Ascendant | Jupiter's sign | Natural dignity | Jupiter rules | BPHS Ch. 24, those lords in the 11th | Commentator's exception? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Aquarius | Neutral | 9th, 12th | Sl. 107: gains "day by day". Sl. 143: losses; sometimes gains through others | Yes (12th) |
| Taurus | Pisces | Own | 8th, 11th | Sl. 95: depends on company. Sl. 131: gain in all undertakings | Yes (8th) |
| Gemini | Aries | Friendly | 7th, 10th | Sl. 83: wealth through the spouse. Sl. 119: wealth, "always delighted" | No |
| Cancer | Taurus | Enemy | 6th, 9th | Sl. 71: wealth through enemies. Sl. 107: gains day by day | Yes (6th) |
| Leo | Gemini | Enemy | 5th, 8th | Sl. 59: learned, an author, with children and wealth. Sl. 95: depends on company | Yes (8th) |
| Virgo | Cancer | Exalted | 4th, 7th | Sl. 47: liberal, charitable. Sl. 83: wealth through the spouse | No |
| Libra | Leo | Friendly | 3rd, 6th | Sl. 35: gain in trading. Sl. 71: wealth through enemies | Yes (6th) |
| Scorpio | Virgo | Enemy | 2nd, 5th | Sl. 23: all kinds of wealth. Sl. 59: learned, with wealth | No |
| Sagittarius | Libra | Enemy | 1st, 4th | Sl. 11: always endowed with gains. Sl. 47: liberal, virtuous | No |
| Capricorn | Scorpio | Friendly | 12th, 3rd | Sl. 143: losses. Sl. 35: gain in trading | Yes (12th) |
| Aquarius | Sagittarius | Moolatrikona to 10 deg, then own | 11th, 2nd | Sl. 131: gain in all undertakings. Sl. 23: all kinds of wealth | No |
| Pisces | Capricorn | Debilitated | 1st, 10th | Sl. 11: always endowed with gains. Sl. 119: wealth, happiness | No |
Pisces rising shows the gap between lordship and dignity at its widest: Jupiter is the Lagna lord and 10th lord, the two Ch. 24 slokas are among the best in the set, and it sits in Capricorn, its fall, where Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 19-20 give grief, penury and service to others and Ch. 45 Sl. 15-18 give dirtiness, dishonour and utter poverty. Virgo rising is the reverse kind of case: exalted in Cancer, owning two angles, which BPHS Ch. 34 calls malefic and this app lists as a mild Kendradhipathya Dosha.
Aspects from the 11th
From the 11th, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 11) returns [5, 3, 7]: the 5th by the 7th aspect, the 3rd by the special 5th-place aspect, and the 7th by the special 9th-place aspect. The 5th is the aspect the commentator uses against Saravali's few sons. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 26-29 add the aspect of Jupiter, and of Mercury, on a house in full, where other benefics add a quarter. See the 5th house and the 7th house.
BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24 also read children from the 5th house counted from Jupiter. From a Jupiter in the 11th that is the 3rd house from the Lagna, which Jupiter itself aspects by its 5th-place aspect. The paraphrases draw nothing from that coincidence and this page does not either; BPHS's rules for counting children are deliberately not reproduced on this site.
Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga, as this engine tabulates it, marks the 11th place from a contributor good for Jupiter for every contributor except Saturn, seven of eight. The Lagna is one of the seven, so a Jupiter in the 11th house always receives the Lagna's point in its own table. The Ashtakavarga calculator returns the full row.
Sign and company
Saravali Ch. 27, Jupiter by sign: Cancer (Virgo rising) a scholar, charitable, famous, rich in grain; Pisces (Taurus rising) knows the Vedas, a headman in the king's service; Sagittarius (Aquarius rising) lasting wealth, a minister; Aries (Gemini rising) wealthy through his own efforts with many expenses; Leo (Libra rising) lastingly inimical yet of abundant friendship; Libra (Sagittarius rising) foremost among fellow traders; Aquarius (Aries rising) loses wealth through his own words; Capricorn (Pisces rising) penury and service to others.
Company, by Saravali Ch. 15: with the Moon (Sl. 10), firm in friendship, modest, wealthy, virtuous, which sits beside the sutra's effortless gains; with the Sun (Sl. 5), virtuous, a king's minister, gains through friends, though within 11 degrees the engine also marks Jupiter combust; with Saturn, heroic and wealthy, the head of an association. In the 11th the Sun is common company for a morning birth, since the Sun's house follows the clock.
How this app grades it
The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Jupiter's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 11th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The dignity function receives the chart, so friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.
- Always favourable: Taurus (own), Virgo (exalted) and Aquarius (Moolatrikona or own).
- Never favourable: Pisces rising (debilitated), and Cancer, Leo, Scorpio and Sagittarius rising, where Jupiter is in Venus's or Mercury's signs and reaches Neutral at best.
- Favourable only with the sign's lord in a temporary-friend position: Gemini, Libra and Capricorn (otherwise Neutral) and Aries (otherwise Enemy sign).
So the favourable line falls to Taurus rising, an exception by the commentator's rule, and never to Scorpio rising, where Jupiter owns the 2nd and 5th and Ch. 34 calls it auspicious. The career and money calculator reports Jupiter's strength separately as the Dhana Karaka condition beside its timing windows.
Timing
Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 includes Labh among the favourable placements in the dasha conditions of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Saturn and the nodes, but not of Jupiter: its own Sl. 45-48 name Karm, Putr and Dharm. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 make the dasha of planets placed in the 3rd, 6th or 11th unfavourable. BPHS does not reconcile the two, and its working method is: judge by placement and relationship, with Sl. 14-17's rule that association with a trine lord helps.
Ch. 47 Sl. 49-51 add that where Jupiter's period begins badly, the trouble belongs to its start and the later part brings wealth, awards and recognition; the app's testing theme for Jupiter follows it. For Taurus and Aquarius rising the period is also the 11th lord's, which this app words as "gains that come with some obstacles, and health matters worth watching". The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period.
For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon; in this engine the 11th from the Moon is favourable for every transiting planet, Jupiter included. That is a separate question from a natal Jupiter in the 11th from the Lagna.
A worked chart
This app's engine output for 10:17 IST on 5 January 2008 in New Delhi, chosen because it is the Aquarius-rising case: Jupiter in its own sign, a hair past its Moolatrikona band, as lord of both wealth houses. It is an illustration, not a reading of any person.
| Item | Engine output |
|---|---|
| Ascendant | Aquarius 12.33 deg |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius 10.08 deg, 11th house, Own sign, combust; 11th and 2nd lord |
| Also in the 11th | Sun, Sagittarius 20.24 deg |
| Moon, Venus | Scorpio, 10th house (Moon debilitated) |
| Mars | Gemini 4.48 deg, retrograde, 5th house |
| Mercury; Saturn, Ketu; Rahu | Capricorn, 12th; Leo, 7th; Aquarius, 1st |
| House line | Favourable: phJupiter11F |
| dashaQuality for Jupiter | Good |
| Yogas reported (selection) | Sunapha [Jupiter, Moon] |
| Shad Bala (engine, of 20) | 4.17, Weak: position 0 (combust), aspect 0, natural 0.5, direction 2.67, time 1 |
| Strength reason text | Its own sign in Sagittarius, panapara house (11th), combust, aspected by Mars |
The dignity and lordship readings agree: own sign at 10.08 degrees, eight hundredths of a degree past the engine's 0-10 Moolatrikona band (and outside the Bhrigu Sutras' narrower 5 degrees, p. 10), so a slightly different position or ayanamsa would read Moolatrikona; the 11th lord in the 11th and the 2nd lord in the 11th. The sutra's Moon condition is not met: the Moon is in the 10th, the 12th from Jupiter, which the engine reports as Sunapha (Jupiter in the 2nd from the Moon), not as company. Mars aspects the 11th from the 5th, a malefic aspect, so Ch. 40 Sl. 12's "unaspected by a malefic" fails.
The Sun shares Sagittarius, 10.27 degrees from Jupiter, inside the engine's 11-degree orb: Jupiter is combust, its position score is removed, and the strength total is Weak while the planet row and dasha grade read favourable and good. Combustion also brings two BPHS verses on the 11th lord into conflict. Ch. 22 Sl. 2 gives many gains for the 11th lord in the 11th and lets exaltation override combustion; Sl. 11 denies gains to a combust 11th lord. Jupiter is in its own sign here, not exalted, so the override as worded does not apply, and both slokas are met at once. The time-strength point is credited because this is a day birth; the engine credits Jupiter's time strength by day. Jupiter aspects the 5th, Gemini, where retrograde Mars sits. The dasha sequence opens in Saturn and runs Mercury to 2029, so Jupiter's period is decades away. The page lists these and does not net them.
Your own chart
- Confirm Jupiter is in the eleventh sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and note the combust flag.
- Is the Moon with Jupiter? That is the sutra's effortless-gains case.
- Find what Jupiter rules; if it is a 6th, 8th or 12th lord, the commentator's exception applies. Read both Ch. 24 slokas.
- For Taurus and Aquarius rising, read Ch. 22 Sl. 2 on the 11th lord in the 11th, and note the other house it owns.
- Check the 2nd and 9th for Ch. 22 Sl. 6 (the Moon in the 2nd, Venus in the 9th).
- Open the yogas calculator for a Great Affluence entry, and see what a yoga in your chart means.
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 ask for the 11th to be read from the Sun and the Moon as well. Method and limits are on the methodology page.
Over-readings
- "Jupiter in the 11th means few children." That is Saravali's line; the Bhrigu Sutras' commentator rejects it because Jupiter aspects the 5th.
- "Jupiter in the 11th means little education." Saravali says so; the Bhrigu Sutras say learned. The texts leave the difference unresolved.
- "Effortless gains are guaranteed." The sutras give that for Jupiter with the Moon.
- "Own-sign Jupiter in the 11th is always good." For Taurus rising it is the 8th and 11th lord, which Ch. 34 calls specifically harmful.
- "A favourable planet row means a strong Jupiter." The worked chart has a favourable row and a Weak Shad Bala, because combustion removes the position score.
- "Jupiter in the 11th means influential friends." BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12 lists income and prosperity; friends come from the modern commentary, and none of the verses cited here ties Jupiter in the 11th to them.
- "Jupiter in the 11th makes its dasha good." Ch. 47 Sl. 45-48 do not name the 11th for Jupiter, and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 count a planet in the 11th as unfavourable.
Questions about Jupiter in the 11th
- Is Jupiter good in the 11th house?
- The verses are favourable: many gains, conveyances and servants (Saravali); learned, wealthy, widely known, with effortless gains when the Moon joins (Bhrigu Sutras).
- Does Jupiter in the 11th reduce children?
- Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 60 says few sons, and Phaldeepika, as the Bhrigu Sutras quote it, few children. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator disputes it, because Jupiter in the 11th aspects the 5th, the house of children. This app makes no prediction about children.
- Which rising signs fall under the commentator's exception?
- By lordship: Cancer and Libra (Jupiter owns the 6th), Taurus and Leo (the 8th), Aries and Capricorn (the 12th).
- What does Jupiter aspect from the 11th?
- The 5th by its 7th aspect, the 3rd by its 5th-place aspect and the 7th by its 9th-place aspect.
- Why is my Jupiter in the 11th marked testing?
- Its dignity label is not Exalted, Own, Moolatrikona or Friendly. Pisces rising (fall in Capricorn) and the four Lagnas that put it in Venus's or Mercury's signs never get the favourable line.
- Which wealth yogas include Jupiter in the 11th?
- Two of BPHS Ch. 41's Great Affluence forms (with Mercury own-sign in the 5th, or the Sun in Leo in the 5th), plus the graded combination of Ch. 22 Sl. 6 with the Moon in the 2nd and Venus in the 9th.
- What does the Moon add?
- The sutras make Jupiter's gains effortless when the Moon is with it, and both Great Affluence forms put the Moon in the 11th too.
- Is a Jupiter dasha good with this placement?
- BPHS Ch. 47 includes the 11th among favourable placements for several planets, though not in Jupiter's own Sl. 45-48; Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 list planets in the 11th as unfavourable. The app grades the period by dignity: good for exalted, Moolatrikona or own sign.
