Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Jupiter in the 12th house: the Bhrigu Sutras' religious spending and their own-sign condition, Saravali, the commentator's warning about the houses Jupiter owns, the Vipareeta yogas for six rising signs, BPHS on a benefic in the house of expenditure, and how this app grades it.

Jupiter in the 12th house is where the great benefic meets the rule the texts state most plainly against benefics: they prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th. The Bhrigu Sutras give a poor but studious native, proficient in mathematics and spending on religious causes, with few children; Saravali gives an indolent, odious native, devoid of speech and luck, likely in servitude; and the sutras' commentator adds that Jupiter loses its good significations here and harms the good houses it owns.

The one condition the sutras name for Jupiter's own sign or exaltation picks out three rising signs, and all three turn out to be Vipareeta Raja Yoga cases in this app. This page sets out the verses, the BPHS rules for a benefic in the house of expenditure, what Jupiter owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Jupiter in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 12th house, Vyaya Bhava.

Sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the text of BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology, and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and printed page; Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them. The 12th-house texts also speak about what follows death, and the Jupiter sutras for this house carry a sexual line; this page names those lines but does not repeat them.

The great benefic in a dusthana

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 13 gives the house expenses, the history of enemies and one's own death; Ch. 23 is about the quality of spending. The 12th is a Dusthana and an Apoklima, and an Apoklima gives a quarter of Kendradi Bal (Ch. 27 Sl. 5).

Jupiter is the planet BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 give knowledge and happiness, and Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 make it karaka of four houses, the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 (printed "86-81") then set its limit: benefics strengthen the houses they occupy but prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th, with results running from full to nil by strength, aspect and dignity. Saravali Ch. 30 is kind to Jupiter in exactly the eight houses outside the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th. On the other side, BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 give expenses "on good accounts" when a benefic occupies the 12th, and Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (corpus line 4248) says benefics in the 12th "cause expenditure on good items".

What the verses say

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 54-58, and the commentator

Sutras 54-58 (Bhrigu Sutras p. 86, corpus line 3407): poor, interested in studies, few children, proficient in mathematics, of loose character; spending on religious causes. The only condition is about what follows death: with a benefic, or in its own sign or exaltation, one outcome; with a malefic, the opposite. The sutras also carry a sexual line. The engine's provenance note records that it dropped the after-death and sexual lines too. The commentator (p. 86) says Jupiter "loses all his good significations and qualities" in the 12th and that the good houses it owns are adversely affected, then adds that a Jupiter meeting one of the Vipareeta conditions "can be very beneficial even in the 12th".

The commentator's warning is about lordship, not occupation. A Jupiter in the 12th still owns two houses, and he reads it as carrying their good significations into the house of loss. Which houses those are depends on the rising sign, so the warning lands differently for each Lagna, set out below.

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 61

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 61 (p. 104): "indolent, odious, be devoid of speech and luck and will be in all probability in servitude". No condition is stated. Set beside its readings for Jupiter in the other houses it is one of the four harsh ones, with the 3rd, 6th and 8th.

Jupiter beside the other planets in the 12th

Moon (70-71)Wasteful expenditureWith a benefic: learned, kind
Mars (90-91)Want of financeNone in the sutras; the commentator allows some good in own sign
Mercury (76-81)Learned, fond of givingWith benefics: religious charities
Jupiter (54-58)Poor, studious, religious spendingBetter in own sign or exaltation
Venus (65-68)"Extreme poverty"With a benefic: very wealthy
Saturn (49-53)Sinful, a bodily afflictionWith a benefic: happy, good eyesight
Condensed from the Bhrigu Sutras (lines 1259, 1805, 2427, 2897, 3407, 3862, 4301).

Jupiter is the one planet here whose sutra gives no this-life reversal at all: its own-sign, exaltation or benefic condition is about what follows death, and Mars's own-sign relief is the commentator's, not the sutra's. And Jupiter is the one whose first line already contains the good spending Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 promise for a benefic: religious causes. The engine's favourable line for the 12th, "real spiritual depth", is written from the sutra's own-sign or exaltation case; the present rule never selects it.

Read the column the other way and Jupiter is the companion that turns four other sutras. The Moon in the 12th with a benefic is learned and kind; Mercury with benefics spends on religious charities; Venus with a benefic is very wealthy; Saturn with a benefic is happy. A Jupiter in the 12th supplies that benefic to any of them sharing its sign, without needing a condition of its own, since BPHS treats Jupiter as a benefic in every company.

The three dignity cases are all Vipareeta cases

Jupiter's own signs are Sagittarius and Pisces and its exaltation is Cancer. In the 12th those fall for Capricorn, Aries and Leo rising. For all three, Jupiter is also the lord of a Trika house, so this app's yogas calculator names a Vipareeta Raja Yoga: Vimala for the 12th lord in the 12th, Sarala for the 8th lord there.

AscendantJupiter inJupiter rulesYoga the engine namesBPHS Ch. 24 for those lords in the 12th

Lordship from SIGN_LORDS; yoga names as in the engine; Ch. 24 condensed from the text (Sl. 36 also gives spending on evil deeds and a wicked father; Sl. 72 hostility to the learned; Sl. 132 many wives).

The sourcing of the Vipareeta rule is narrow. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (p. 86) quotes Uttara Kalamrita, where the 12th lord qualifies in the 8th or 6th; the 12th lord in the 12th is his own extension, and BPHS reads it as heavy expenditure (Ch. 24 Sl. 144). BPHS supports only the 12th lord in the 8th (Sl. 140). So the two Vimala rows, Aries and Capricorn rising, rest on the commentator's extension. Under Jupiter in the 7th (p. 81) the same commentator, citing Uttara Kalamrita, holds that Jupiter does good even as lord of the 3rd and 12th, which is Capricorn rising exactly.

Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 add the 12th lord in its own house or exalted as a sign of spending on good accounts, which covers the two Vimala rows. That sloka and Ch. 24 Sl. 144 can be read as measuring the quality and the amount of spending, and this page does not merge them. Ch. 23 Sl. 5-6 then leave the native troubled by expenses when the 12th lord is in an enemy's or debilitation Navamsa, so for Aries and Capricorn rising Jupiter's Navamsa sign belongs in the reading.

The commentator's warning sharpens these rows rather than reversing them. For Aries rising Jupiter owns the 9th, a trine; for Leo the 5th; for Cancer the 9th. In each, a good house is carried into the 12th, which is the case he describes. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord favourable when associated with a trine lord, and for Aries, Leo and Cancer rising Jupiter is both.

Leo rising and a retrograde Jupiter

One source adds a wrinkle to the Leo row in particular. Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 14 (p. 17) records the view that a planet retrograde in its exaltation sign gives nothing, and its own example is Jupiter backing into Cancer from Leo. For Leo rising, Cancer is the 12th, so that is a retrograde Jupiter in the 12th in exactly the sign the sutra calls its exception. The same chapter (Sl. 39) says a retrograde benefic is strong and "capable of conferring kingdom", and the engine gives a retrograde Jupiter its motion point. Jupiter is retrograde on about 30 per cent of days in the engine's positions, so the question is not rare.

Saravali Ch. 45's dignity lines set the three exception rows against the rest: exalted (Leo rising) famous, wealthy, learned and honourable; Moolatrikona (Capricorn rising, to 10 degrees) helpful to others with a knowledge of justice; own sign (Aries rising) versed in the Vedas and rich; in fall (Aquarius rising, Sl. 15-18) dirtiness, dishonour and utter poverty; in an enemy's sign (Gemini, Cancer, Libra, Scorpio rising by nature) "a eunuch and be devoid of justice and wealth".

Ch. 23 and a benefic in the 12th

  • Sl. 1-4: expenses on good accounts when a benefic occupies the 12th. Jupiter in the 12th meets that condition in every chart; unlike Mercury, its benefic status does not depend on company.
  • Sl. 11-12: with malefics on the 12th and its lord, wandering from country to country; with benefics in the same positions, moving within one's own country.
  • Sl. 10: final emancipation for a benefic in the 12th with its lord exalted or joined or aspected by a benefic. It is the sloka behind the moksha reputation, and it is conditional; this app does not detect it. Whether a 12th lord occupying its own house counts as "joined" by the benefic it is, for Aries and Capricorn rising, the sloka does not say.
  • Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2: benefics in both the 12th and the 2nd form Subh Yog. The app does not detect it.

Read together with the sutra, Ch. 23 gives Jupiter in the 12th a consistent thread: the spending is on religious or good accounts. What the texts disagree on is the native's fortune, poor in the sutra and unlucky in Saravali, not the direction of the spending.

The Lagna lord in the 12th: Sagittarius and Pisces rising

For Sagittarius rising Jupiter in the 12th is in Scorpio, and for Pisces rising in Aquarius; both make it the Lagna lord in the 12th. Ch. 24 Sl. 12 reads that as little physical happiness, unfruitful spending and much anger, when the lord is without benefic aspect or company. Its other house is the 4th for Sagittarius (Sl. 48: without domestic comforts) and the 10th for Pisces (Sl. 120: spends through royal abodes, worried though skilful).

The 12th lord for these Lagnas is the lord of Jupiter's sign: Mars for Sagittarius, Saturn for Pisces. Ch. 42 Sl. 6, among the Combinations for Penury, reads the Lagna lord joined with a Trika lord or with Saturn, without a benefic's aspect, as one. So Jupiter in the 12th with its sign's lord beside it, Mars in Scorpio or Saturn in Aquarius, meets that sloka as worded; the benefic-aspect exception is the way out.

Two more slokas do not settle these Lagnas. Ch. 42 Sl. 15 makes a person a spendthrift when the 12th receives the Lagna lord's aspect (or the 12th from the Atma Karaka its dispositor's); here the Lagna lord occupies the 12th rather than aspecting it. And Ch. 39 Sl. 28 gives a Raj Yog when a debilitated Trika lord aspects the Lagna; from the 12th Jupiter aspects the 6th, 4th and 8th, never the 1st, so no Jupiter in the 12th can meet it, and the app does not detect it in any case.

The rows not covered above. Natural dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; Ch. 24 condensed from the text (Sl. 24 also gives adventurous and an unhappy eldest child; Sl. 84 a miser; Sl. 60 an adopted son).

Aquarius rising is the hardest row on every count: Jupiter is in its fall, carries both wealth houses into the house of expenditure, and Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 19-20 give Jupiter in Capricorn much grief, penury and service to others. Scorpio rising carries the 2nd and the 5th, two houses Jupiter also signifies, which is the commentator's warning in its most literal form. The Lagna calculator gives your rising sign.

Aspects and strength

From the 12th, aspectedHouses('jupiter', 12) returns [6, 4, 8]: the 6th by the 7th aspect, the 4th by the special 5th-place aspect, and the 8th by the special 9th-place aspect. Two of the three are the other Trika houses. BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 26-29 add the aspect of Jupiter, and of Mercury, on a house in full. The texts cited here state no specific result for these aspects. See the 6th house and the 8th house.

Directional strength is the one measure the 12th helps: full in the 1st (BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7-7 1/2), so 3.33 of 4 in the 12th in this engine. Jupiter's own Ashtakavarga, as this engine tabulates it, is leanest in the 12th place: Saturn alone marks it, one point of eight. The Lagna does not, so a Jupiter in the 12th house never receives the Lagna's point in its own table, the reverse of the 11th, where seven contributors including the Lagna mark it. The Ashtakavarga calculator and Shad Bala calculator show both measures.

Saravali Ch. 27 by sign: Pisces (Aries rising) knows the Vedas, honoured by friends; Cancer (Leo rising) a scholar, charitable, famous; Sagittarius (Capricorn rising) a preceptor, fond of solitude and shrines; Leo (Virgo rising) at home in hills, forts and temples; Libra (Scorpio rising) many foreign assignments; Scorpio (Sagittarius rising) a builder of temples, with many difficulties. Several of these, solitude, shrines, foreign assignments, sit close to the 12th's later significations, but the sign readings make no reference to house and this page does not merge them.

The Moon decides one more reading. This engine forms Gaja Kesari by BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4, so a Jupiter in the 12th, not an angle from the Lagna, needs the Moon in the 3rd, 6th, 9th or 12th house and a benefic joining Jupiter or in the 6th to aspect it. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 79) says the "Rapport between the Moon and Jupiter" is completely lost when Jupiter is in the 6th or 8th from the Moon: for a 12th-house Jupiter that means the Moon in the 7th or the 5th house.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading's planet row is favourable only when dignity is strong and the house is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. A Jupiter in the 12th therefore always gets "financial strain and a drift in discipline otherwise", including the three dignity cases the sutra names. dashaQuality() rates any dasha lord in a dusthana challenging, after BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, which speak of the dasha lord's position at the commencement of the dasha.

The Shad Bala does not read the house verdict: its position score follows dignity, so an exalted or own-sign Jupiter in the 12th can be labelled Strong while the planet row reads testing. The engine reports both and does not reconcile them, and the sources give it no rule for doing so.

Timing

Jupiter has 16 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 count the 12th among the unfavourable houses for a dasha lord "at the commencement of the Dasha". Jupiter's own unfavourable list in Sl. 49-51 names a debilitated, combust or malefic-joined Jupiter, or one in the 6th or 8th, and adds that the trouble belongs to the start of the period with wealth, awards and recognition later. The 12th is not on that specific list; the general rule covers it.

Ch. 42 Sl. 13, from the same penury chapter, turns company into a timing rule: a planet associated with a Trika lord, and without the aspect of a trine lord, harms finances in its own dasha. A Jupiter in the 12th beside the 12th lord is associated with a Trika lord by position. For the rising signs where Jupiter is itself a trine lord (Aries, Cancer, Leo, Scorpio), the sloka still asks for a trine lord's aspect, not ownership, and this page does not decide whether a planet's own lordship counts.

For Aries and Capricorn rising the period is also the 12th lord's, which Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give "distress and danger from diseases" and this app words as "expenses, distress or health matters needing attention"; Sl. 14-17 1/2 soften it with a trine lord. The app's testing theme for Jupiter is "a slower, more testing period early on, though effects usually improve as the period matures", after Sl. 49-51. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Jupiter Mahadasha page covers the period. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Jupiter in the 12th from the Moon is testing in its rule.

Jupiter is exalted, which is the sutra's own-sign or exaltation case (an after-death line only), and the 8th lord in the 12th, which the engine names Sarala. It is in exchange with the Moon: Jupiter in the Moon's sign, the Moon in Jupiter's. The Moon is the 12th lord for Leo, so the 5th lord sits in the 12th and the 12th lord in the 5th, which is Ch. 24 Sl. 60 (little happiness from own children) and Sl. 137 (the 12th lord in the 5th) in one exchange, and also the commentator's case of a good house carried into the 12th. Jupiter is 8th from the Moon, the position Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (p. 79) says loses the Moon-Jupiter rapport.

The grades split. Planet row testing and dasha challenging, by house; Shad Bala Strong, by dignity. And the Ascendant is at 29.65 degrees of Leo, minutes from Virgo: a slightly later birth time would make Virgo rise, Jupiter would fall in the 11th as an exalted 4th and 7th lord, and almost every line above would change. What a missing or uncertain birth time does covers that risk. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Jupiter is in the sign before your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and check how close the Ascendant is to a sign boundary.
  2. Is Jupiter in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces (Leo, Capricorn, Aries rising)? That is the sutra's named condition, and a Vipareeta case.
  3. Find what Jupiter rules: the commentator says it harms the good houses it owns from here.
  4. For Sagittarius and Pisces rising, read Ch. 24 Sl. 12, and check whether Mars or Saturn sits with Jupiter (Ch. 42 Sl. 6).
  5. Check the 2nd for Subh Yog, and the 12th lord's company for Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12.
  6. Weigh any Vipareeta entry with what a yoga in your chart means, and read BPHS's own Ch. 24 sloka beside it.

Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Jupiter protects any house, even the 12th." Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 say benefics prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th, and its own verse for the 12th is harsh.
  • "Jupiter in the 12th means spiritual liberation." Ch. 23 Sl. 10 is conditional, and the app does not detect it.
  • "Exalted Jupiter in the 12th is favourable in the app." The planet row is always testing in a dusthana.
  • "Vimala Yoga makes it good." For Aries and Capricorn rising it rests on the commentator's extension; BPHS reads the 12th lord in the 12th as heavy expenditure.
  • "A Strong Shad Bala means the 12th does not matter." The score does not read the house verdict; the worked chart is Strong and testing at once.
  • "Jupiter in the 12th means life abroad." BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12 tie wandering to malefics on the house and its lord, and give benefics the opposite.
  • "Exalted Jupiter in the 12th is the sutra's good case." The sutra's own-sign or exaltation condition is about what follows death; for this life it names none.
  • "Jupiter in the 12th means poverty." The sutra says poor; Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 point the spending to good accounts, and the sutra itself names religious causes.

Questions about Jupiter in the 12th

Is Jupiter bad in the 12th house?
The verses are unfavourable on fortune (poor in the Bhrigu Sutras 54-58, devoid of luck in Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 61) and consistent that the spending goes to religious or good causes. The sutras' own-sign or exaltation condition concerns only what follows death; the commentator says a Jupiter meeting a Vipareeta condition can be very beneficial here.
Which rising signs meet the sutra's own-sign or exaltation condition?
Aries (Jupiter in Pisces), Leo (exalted in Cancer) and Capricorn (Jupiter in Sagittarius). All three are Vipareeta Raja Yoga cases in this app.
What does the commentator mean by harming the houses it owns?
That Jupiter in the 12th carries the good significations of the houses it rules into the house of loss. Which houses depends on the rising sign: the 9th for Aries and Cancer, the 5th for Leo and Scorpio, the 2nd for Scorpio and Aquarius.
What does Jupiter aspect from the 12th?
The 6th by its 7th aspect, the 4th by its 5th-place aspect and the 8th by its 9th-place aspect.
Why is the app's line always testing here?
The planet row needs strong dignity and a house outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The 12th fails the second test for every sign.
Does Jupiter in the 12th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
For six rising signs this app names one: Vimala for Aries and Capricorn, Sarala for Taurus and Leo, Harsha for Cancer and Libra.
Is a benefic in the 12th good for spending?
BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 give expenses on good accounts when a benefic occupies the 12th, and Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II says benefics there cause expenditure on good items. Jupiter meets the condition in every chart.
Is a Jupiter dasha difficult with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 count the 12th unfavourable and the app grades it challenging. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 1/2 soften a 12th lord's period with a trine lord, which applies to Aries rising.
