Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Mercury in the 12th house: the Bhrigu Sutras' generosity and its two conditions, Saravali's mixed verse, BPHS on benefics in the house of expenditure, the Vipareeta yogas for six rising signs, the Lagna lord in the 12th, and how this app grades it.

Mercury in the 12th house tests a rule that runs through the classical texts: benefics strengthen the houses they occupy, but not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The Bhrigu Sutras read Mercury here more kindly than most planets, as learned and fond of distributing things to others, and then split the reading by company: with malefics an unstable mind and bitterness toward the king, with benefics spending on religious charities but only meagre education. Saravali gives a native who keeps his word, speaks well and is learned, and is also indolent, humiliated, pitiable and cruel.

This page sets out those verses, what BPHS says about a benefic in the house of expenditure, the Vipareeta and Lagna lord rules that apply for particular rising signs, and how this app grades the placement, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 12th house, Vyaya Bhava.

Sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. The 12th-house texts also speak about what follows death; those lines are named where relevant as the texts' statements and not read as predictions. Body associations are classical and not medical advice.

A benefic in the house of expenditure

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 13 defines the house as expenses, the history of enemies and one's own death. Ch. 23, its chapter, is about the quality of spending rather than its amount. It is a Dusthana and an Apoklima (Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36), and an Apoklima gives a planet a quarter of Kendradi Bal (Ch. 27 Sl. 5).

Two general rules point in opposite directions for Mercury. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 (printed "86-81") say benefics prove adverse in the 6th, 8th and 12th, with results running from full to nil by strength, aspect and dignity. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 give expenses "on good accounts" when a benefic occupies the 12th. Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II says the same: benefics in the 12th "cause expenditure on good items ... prudent expenses", though "the 8th and 12th are best when unoccupied". Mercury counts as a benefic only in benefic company, by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, so which of these rules applies is itself a question of company.

What the verses say

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 76-81

The sutras (p. 73): the native will be learned and fond of distributing things to others. With malefics, an unstable mind and bitterness toward the king; with benefics, expenditure on religious charities and meagre education. The commentator says the only good a benefic Mercury does here is spending on religious charities and giving necessities to the needy. Most planets' 12th-house sutras open bleakly and are reversed by a condition; Mercury's first line is not bleak at all, which makes it unusual. The app's unused favourable line for the 12th, "genuine generosity and a charitable disposition", is written from this sutra.

Other Views (p. 73). Brihat Jatak: degradation. Phaldeepika: poor, lazy, cruel, uneducated, humiliated. Chamatkar Chintamani: entertains Brahmins and makes enemies afraid. The book's Note sums up that these authorities attribute adverse results to Mercury in the 12th, which is harder than its own sutras. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 49

The verse in full: the native will be able to keep up his promise, be indolent, be humiliated, be a good speaker, be learned, pitiable and cruel. Virtues of speech and learning beside deprivations and a harsh temperament, with no condition stated. Speech is Mercury's own governance in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13, so the verse keeps the planet's signification intact while giving the house's loss.

Saturn (49-53)Sinful, a bodily affliction; with a malefic, waste and povertyWith a benefic: happy
Condensed from the Bhrigu Sutras' 12th-house sutras (pp. 31, 45, 61, 73, 86, 97, 108); their afterlife lines are omitted.

Mercury and Jupiter are the two planets given religious spending in the 12th; for Jupiter it is part of the first line, for Mercury it needs benefic company. For the Moon, Venus and Saturn too the reversal is a benefic companion. And Mercury is the only planet whose sutra here names a mental state for the malefic case rather than a loss of money, which is the reading the app's testing line, "restlessness and limited follow-through", carries.

The Sun beside Mercury, and Vasi Yoga

Mercury is never more than one sign from the Sun, so a Mercury in the 12th belongs to a birth with the Sun in the 11th, 12th or 1st. The Sun's house follows the clock, the 1st around sunrise and the 10th around midday, so in this engine's whole-sign houses these are births around sunrise and in the morning after it. With the Sun in the 12th too, the sutra's malefic case is met, since this engine counts the Sun among its malefics, and Mercury is often combust: 41.0 per cent of days in a century of this engine's positions, by its 14 degrees.

With the Sun in the 1st, Mercury in the 12th is in the 12th sign from the Sun, which forms Vasi Yoga (Saravali Ch. 14 Sl. 1; BPHS Ch. 38 Sl. 1 spells it Vosi). Saravali Sl. 7-9 read Vasi caused by Mercury as sweet in speech, good-looking and obedient to others' orders, and Sl. 10 asks for the Sun's strength and the causing planet's to be weighed first. The engine detects Vasi by whole sign. It is counted from the Sun, so it says nothing about Vyaya Bhava.

The BPHS rules for benefics in the 12th

  • Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4: expenses on good accounts when a benefic occupies the 12th, or when the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own house or exalted.
  • Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12: with malefics on the 12th house and its lord, and the lord exchanging aspects with malefics, one wanders from country to country; with benefics in the same positions, one moves within one's own country.
  • Ch. 23 Sl. 10: final emancipation for a benefic in the 12th with its lord exalted or joined or aspected by a benefic. It is the sloka behind the 12th's moksha reputation, and it is conditional; this app does not detect it. Sl. 9, just before it, gives the opposite afterlife line for a 12th lord with the Sun, which bears on Cancer and Libra rising; it is named here as the text's and not read.
  • Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2: a benefic in the Lagna, or benefics in both the 12th and the 2nd, form Subh Yog, read as eloquent, charming and virtuous; malefics form Asubh Yog. The app detects neither.

Every one of these turns on Mercury counting as a benefic, which BPHS makes depend on its company. A Mercury alone or with Venus or Jupiter fits them; a Mercury with the Sun, Mars or Saturn is, by BPHS's own rule, a malefic for the purpose. Subh Yog is the one that names a Mercury quality: eloquence.

Benefic company is less rare for Mercury than it might seem: Venus never strays more than about three signs from Mercury in this engine's positions and shares its sign on about a quarter of days. Saravali Ch. 15's Mercury pairs read the companions this way: with Venus (Sl. 18), abundantly rich, a student of the Vedas, good in speech; with Jupiter (Sl. 17), a scholar, wise and happy; with the Moon (Sl. 9), skilled in poems and wealthy; with the Sun (Sl. 4), in service with unsteady wealth; with Mars (Sl. 13), little wealth; with Saturn (Sl. 19), an able poet but in debt, proud and deceiving. In the house of expenditure the pairs that mention wealth or debt are the ones to set beside the sutra.

The Vipareeta yogas: six rising signs

This app detects Harsha, Sarala and Vimala Yoga when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th respectively sits in one of those houses, and the yogas calculator reads them as difficulty converted into an unexpected source of gain. Mercury rules two signs, so for six rising signs a Mercury in the 12th forms one.

AscendantMercury inMercury rulesYoga the engine namesBPHS Ch. 24 for that lord in the 12th

The sourcing is exact. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator, under Jupiter in the 12th (p. 86), quotes Uttara Kalamrita for the rule, where the 12th lord qualifies in the 8th or 6th; the 12th lord in the 12th is his own extension ("on the analogy of the above principles"). BPHS supports only the 12th lord in the 8th (Ch. 24 Sl. 140) and reads the 12th lord in the 12th as heavy expenditure (Sl. 144). So the two Vimala rows here, Cancer and Libra rising, rest on the commentator's extension. They are also the two rows where Mercury is strongest, own sign and exalted, and where Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 give the 12th lord in its own house or exalted expenses on good accounts. Sl. 144 and Sl. 1-4 can be read as measuring the amount and the quality of spending; this page does not merge them.

For Libra rising, Mercury is also the 9th lord, a trine lord, and BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 call it auspicious and name a Raja Yoga with the Moon. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make a 12th lord's dasha favourable when associated with a trine lord, and here the 12th lord is one. Aries rising puts Mercury in its fall in Pisces as the Harsha case, where Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 23-24 give good conduct but no learning in shastra, poverty and no children.

Two further 12th-house slokas bear on these rows. Ch. 23 Sl. 5-6 leave the native troubled by expenses when the 12th lord is in an enemy's or debilitation Navamsa, so for Cancer and Libra rising Mercury's Navamsa sign is part of the reading; the Navamsa (D9) calculator gives it. And Ch. 39 Sl. 28 gives a Raj Yog when one of the 6th, 8th or 12th lords is debilitated and aspects the Lagna. For Aries rising Mercury is a debilitated 6th lord in the 12th, but from there it aspects only the 6th, so that sloka cannot be met from this house; the app does not detect it in any case.

The Lagna lord in the 12th: Gemini and Virgo rising

For Gemini rising Mercury in the 12th is in Taurus, and for Virgo rising in Leo, so in both it is the Lagna lord in the 12th, in a friend's sign by nature. Ch. 24 Sl. 12 reads the Lagna lord in the 12th as no physical happiness, unfruitful spending and much anger, when it is without benefic aspect or company; that escape clause matters. Mercury's other house is the 4th for Gemini (Sl. 48: without domestic comforts) and the 10th for Virgo (Sl. 120: spends through royal abodes, worried though skilful).

Virgo rising carries a specific risk among BPHS's penury combinations. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 6 reads the Lagna lord joined with a Trika lord and without a benefic's aspect as a combination for penury. For Virgo the 12th lord is the Sun, and a Mercury in Leo is in the Sun's sign and often beside it. Ch. 23 Sl. 14 gives the opposite case: the Lagna lord in the 12th while the 12th lord is in the Lagna with Venus brings expenses on religious grounds, which for Virgo means the Sun in Virgo with Venus and Mercury in Leo.

Ch. 42 Sl. 15 makes a person a spendthrift when the 12th receives the Lagna lord's aspect. Mercury occupies the 12th for these two Lagnas rather than aspecting it, and the sloka does not say whether occupation counts; this page does not extend it.

The other four rising signs

Mercury is in your 12th when it occupies the sign before your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The pattern of Ch. 24 is that the matters of a house whose lord moves into the 12th are spent.

Natural dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; Ch. 24 condensed from bphs.txt (Sl. 24 adds adventurous, an eye on others' wealth; Sl. 48 foolish and indolent; Sl. 120 fear from enemies, not shown).

Leo rising is the costliest row by lordship: Mercury owns both wealth houses, the 2nd and the 11th, and carries both into the house of expenditure, in an enemy's sign. Taurus rising carries the 5th, a trine. The 11th lord's sloka (Sl. 132, "will always depend on good deeds") shows the 12th does not make every planet behave badly; it makes each one give something away.

Saravali Ch. 26, Mercury by sign, adds a sign layer for every Lagna, and several rows touch the 12th's themes of spending and distance. Aries (Taurus rising): very learned, a writer, money hard to keep, debts. Cancer (Leo rising): learned, a poet, fond of living abroad, at odds with relatives. Libra (Scorpio rising): an able speaker who spends freely, with business in many directions. Scorpio (Sagittarius rising): troubles and debts. Capricorn (Aquarius rising): mean, does others' work, given to dreaming and wandering. Gemini (Cancer rising) and Virgo (Libra rising) read best: sweet in speech and affluent; virtuous, eloquent, skilled in writing. The sign readings make no reference to house, and this page does not merge them with it.

Aspect and strength

From the 12th, aspectedHouses('mercury', 12) returns [6]: the 7th aspect on the 6th house, the other Trika house. Mercury is a benefic in this engine, so the aspect raises the aspect score of any planet there. The texts state no result for it.

Directional strength is the one measure the 12th helps: BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7 gives Mercury full strength in the 1st, and the 12th is one house away, so this engine gives 3.33 of 4. Combustion often cancels it, since a combust planet loses its whole position score. The Shad Bala calculator shows the parts. Saravali Ch. 45 adds dignity lines: exalted, intelligent, foremost in the family and a skilful speaker (Libra rising); own sign, a sweet speaker and learned (Cancer rising); debilitated, mean and at enmity with relatives (Aries rising).

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading's planet row is favourable only when dignity is strong and the house is outside the 6th, 8th and 12th, so a Mercury in the 12th always gets "restlessness and limited follow-through under affliction", even exalted for Libra rising. The favourable line written from the sutra is recorded but not selected by the present rule. dashaQuality() rates any dasha lord in a dusthana challenging, after BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6.

The app's testing line carries the sutra's malefic case (an unstable mind) and drops its benefic case (religious charity, with meagre education). Reading the chart yourself, the question the sutra asks is whether Mercury's companions are benefics or malefics, and the engine's row does not ask it.

Timing

Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 66-70 give Mercury in Ari, Randhr or Vyaya (the 6th, 8th or 12th) loss of wealth through indulgence, danger of theft, malevolence of the government and loss of land and cattle, with complaints this page does not repeat. Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 add that the placement at the start of the dasha counts as well as the natal one; this app applies the natal test only.

BPHS Ch. 58 reads several sub-periods in Mercury's dasha partly by the sub-lord's house counted "from the Lord of the Dasha", that is from Mercury: an angle, a trine or the 11th from Mercury reads well, the 6th, 8th or 12th from it does not. With Mercury in the 12th house that count shifts every house by one. A sub-lord in the Lagna is 2nd from Mercury; one in the 11th house is 12th from Mercury; one in the 5th house is 6th from it; one in the 7th house is 8th from it. So planets in the 5th, 7th and 11th houses fall in Ch. 58's weak positions from a 12th-house Mercury, and planets in the 3rd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 9th houses fall in its angles or trines.

For Cancer and Libra rising the period is also the 12th lord's, which Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 head "distress and danger from diseases" and this app words as "expenses, distress or health matters needing attention"; Sl. 14-17 soften it for a 12th lord associated with a trine lord, which for Libra Mercury is. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Mercury Mahadasha page the sub-periods. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and Mercury in the 12th from the Moon is testing in the engine's benefic rule.

Every company-based rule above reads the same way here. The Sun shares Gemini, 13.78 degrees from Mercury: a malefic companion for the sutra's unstable-mind case, and combust by the engine's 14-degree orb though not by the Bhrigu Sutras' 8.5. A 12th lord with the Sun is also the case BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 9 names with an afterlife line, reported here only as the text's. Saturn aspects the 12th from Virgo. No benefic joins or aspects Mercury, so BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4's benefic-in-the-12th reading has only Mercury's own nature to rest on, and by BPHS's rule that nature follows the Sun here.

The lordship rules read differently: the 12th lord in its own sign is Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4's good spending and Ch. 24 Sl. 144's heavy expenditure at once, and the engine names Vimala Yoga on the commentator's extended rule. The Moon in Revati, a Mercury nakshatra, starts the chart in Mercury's own Mahadasha, graded challenging, with about three and a half years left. Mercury at 23.19 degrees is in the last decanate, which BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the end of the period. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Mercury is in the sign before your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and note the combust flag and where the Sun is.
  2. List Mercury's companions and aspects: benefics turn the sutra toward charity, malefics (the Sun included) toward an unstable mind.
  3. Find what Mercury rules. If it is a 6th, 8th or 12th lord, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala, and read BPHS's own Ch. 24 sloka beside it.
  4. For Gemini and Virgo rising, read Ch. 24 Sl. 12 and its benefic escape clause.
  5. Check the 2nd for Subh or Asubh Yog, and the 12th lord for Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12.
  6. If the Sun is in your 1st, note that Mercury also forms Vasi Yoga, which is counted from the Sun.

How to weigh a yoga is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Mercury in the 12th means losses." The sutra's first line is learning and generosity; losses appear in Ch. 47 Sl. 66-70 for the dasha.
  • "A benefic in the 12th always spends well." Mercury is a benefic only in benefic company by BPHS's rule, and the Sun is often beside it.
  • "Exalted Mercury in the 12th is favourable in the app." The planet row is always testing in a dusthana.
  • "Vimala Yoga cancels the 12th." BPHS reads the 12th lord in the 12th as heavy expenditure; the yoga rests on the commentator's extension.
  • "Mercury in the 12th means a spiritual nature." Ch. 23 Sl. 10 is conditional on a strong, well-associated 12th lord, and the app does not detect it.
  • "Vasi Yoga is about the 12th house." It is counted from the Sun.

Questions about Mercury in the 12th

Is Mercury bad in the 12th house?
The verses are mixed: learned and generous (Bhrigu Sutras), a man of his word and a good speaker but indolent, humiliated and cruel (Saravali); the authorities the Bhrigu Sutras quote are harsher. Company decides most of it: benefics turn it to charity, malefics to an unstable mind.
Does Mercury in the 12th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
For six rising signs this app names one: Harsha for Aries and Capricorn, Sarala for Scorpio and Aquarius, Vimala for Cancer and Libra.
What does Mercury aspect from the 12th?
Only the 6th house, by its 7th aspect.
Why is the app's line always testing here?
The planet row needs strong dignity and a house outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The 12th fails the second test for every sign.
What if Mercury is my Lagna lord?
For Gemini and Virgo rising, BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 12 reads the Lagna lord in the 12th as unfruitful spending and little physical happiness, when without benefic aspect or company.
Is the Sun with Mercury in the 12th a problem?
By the sutra, a malefic companion gives an unstable mind, and this engine counts the Sun as a malefic. It also often makes Mercury combust, which removes its position score in the app's Shad Bala.
Does Mercury in the 12th give Subh Yog?
BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2 form Subh Yog with benefics in both the 12th and the 2nd. The app does not detect it.
Is a Mercury dasha difficult with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 66-70 give Mercury in the 12th an adverse dasha, and the app grades it challenging. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 soften a 12th lord's period with a trine lord, which applies to Libra rising.
