Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Mars in the 12th house: the Bhrigu Sutras and Saravali, the commentator's own-sign relief, the BPHS verses on malefics in the house of expenditure, Mangal Dosha, the Vipareeta yogas that form for six rising signs, and how this app grades it.

Mars in the 12th house is the rare placement on which the classical authorities line up against it without dissent. The Bhrigu Sutras give want of money and rheumatic and bilious complaints, and false vanity with a malefic; Saravali gives diseased eyes, a fierce native and imprisonment; and the sutras' commentator records that all the authorities he consulted agree Mars gives only bad results here, with some relief in its own sign. That relief, and what Mars owns from the rising sign, is where the reading moves.

This page sets out the verses, the BPHS rules for malefics in the house of expenditure, the Mangal Dosha and Vipareeta Raja Yoga rules that both fire here, and how this app grades the placement, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mars in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 12th house, Vyaya Bhava.

Sources, and the harsh lines

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The 12th-house texts speak about poverty, confinement and what follows death. This page reports the conditional rules, names the afterlife and lifespan lines without applying them, and reports harsh clauses as the texts' statements. Body associations are classical and not medical advice.

A malefic in the house of expenditure

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 13 defines the house in half a sloka: expenses, the history of enemies, and one's own death. Ch. 23, its own chapter, is about the quality of spending rather than its amount, and about whether one stays or wanders. The house is a Dusthana and an Apoklima at once (Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36), and Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 state the working rule that association with the Trikas inflicts evils.

Mars brings two further strikes from its own side. It is the most malefic of the natural malefics in BPHS Ch. 34, and Ch. 27 Sl. 30-31 deduct one Rupa from the strength of any house it occupies. As an Apoklima the 12th gives a planet a quarter of Kendradi Bal (Ch. 27 Sl. 5). And Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II p. 72), a modern case book, says the 8th and 12th "are best when unoccupied", with benefics there causing spending on good things. Mars is not a benefic.

What the verses say

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 90-91, and the commentator

The sutras (p. 61): "The native will suffer from want of finance. He will suffer from rheumatic and bilious diseases", and with a malefic, "false vanity". The bodily clause is the text's statement, not medical advice. The commentator: "Mars there will give only bad results... He may give some good results if he is in his own sign", and in the 12th he "will also destroy the good significations of the house he owns". His Note: "All the above authorities are in agreement that Mars gives only bad results when he is in the 12th house." Two sutras is the shortest Mars treatment of any house in the chapter; the 1st gets nine, the 10th eleven.

The commentator's "own sign" leaves the boundary open. Mars's own signs are Aries and Scorpio, which fall in the 12th for Taurus and Sagittarius rising. He names own sign, not exaltation, so this page does not extend the relief to Capricorn (Aquarius rising), though the Bhrigu Sutras' habit elsewhere is to pair the two.

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 37

"Should Mars be in 12th, the native will have diseased eyes, will fall in moral sense, will kill his wife, be a talebearer, be fierce and will contract humility and imprisonment" (p. 102). These are the text's statements, not forecasts. Imprisonment is in the Bhrigu Sutras' modern list of the 12th house's significations, so the verse attaches Mars to one of the house's own themes. It states no condition. Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 69-70 (p. 130) add that Mars in the 12th aspected by Mercury "will cause losses in several ways", and that Jupiter, a waxing Moon or Venus in the 12th grow wealth only if Mars does not aspect them.

Mars beside the other planets in the 12th

Almost every planet in the 12th gets a bleak first line in the Bhrigu Sutras and then a condition that reverses it. Mars is the exception to the pattern.

Planet in the 12thBhrigu Sutras first lineThe reversing condition
Sun (103-110)Wasteful spending, life away from homeWith a strong auspicious planet: blessings and bed comforts; in Leo, a Vipareeta Yoga
Moon (70-71)Wasteful expenditure, angry natureWith a benefic: learned, kind; most ill effects warded off in Cancer
Mars (90-91)Want of finance, rheumatic and bilious complaintsNone in the sutra; the commentator allows some relief in own sign
Mercury (76-81)Learned, fond of givingWith benefics: spending on religious charities
Jupiter (54-58)Poor, studious, few children, spends on religious causesBetter with a benefic, in own sign or exaltation
Venus (65-68)"Extreme poverty"With a benefic: very wealthy; most authorities make it rich
Saturn (49-53)Sinful, a bodily affliction; with a malefic: wasteful expenditure, poorWith a benefic: happy; the commentator: very beneficial as a 6th, 8th or 12th lord
The Bhrigu Sutras on each planet in the 12th (pp. 31, 45, 61, 73, 86, 97, 108), checked against the corpus and condensed; afterlife lines omitted.

Two comparisons are useful. Venus is the open disagreement of this house, with the authorities split; Mars is its open agreement. And Saturn, the other slow malefic, has the commentator's Vipareeta clause attached in his comments on its entry (very beneficial as a 12th, 6th or 8th lord, p. 108), while Mars's entry carries no such clause. The Vipareeta rule still applies to Mars, through the commentator's general rule and this app's yoga detection, below.

The BPHS verses on malefics in the 12th

Ch. 23 never names Mars alone, but three of its slokas are written for malefics in the house, and one names Mars among others.

  • Sl. 13: "Earnings will be through sinful measures" if Saturn or Mars and the like occupy the 12th without a benefic's aspect. The condition, no benefic aspect, is part of the rule.
  • Sl. 11-12: wandering from country to country if the 12th lord and the 12th house are with malefics and the lord exchanges aspects with malefics; with benefics in the same positions, one moves within one's own country. Mars in the 12th supplies the malefic in the house, half the condition.
  • Sl. 9: Rahu in the 12th with Mars, Saturn and the Sun, which the text reads as going to hell after death. It is the text's statement, named here and not applied.
  • Sl. 1-4, by contrast, give spending on good accounts when a benefic occupies the 12th or the 12th lord is in its own house or exalted. For Taurus rising, Mars in Aries is the 12th lord in its own house.

BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2 add a pair rule: malefics in both the 12th and the 2nd form Asubh Yog, benefics in both Subh Yog. A Mars in the 12th is half of Asubh Yog; the 2nd house decides the other half. Sl. 1-2 read Asubh Yog as sensuous and sinful, as the text's statement. This app does not detect Subh or Asubh Yog.

Mangal Dosha from the 12th

BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47 names Mars in the 12th, 4th, 7th or 8th from the Lagna, with no benefic aspecting or joining it, as a yoga the chapter reads as bereavement in marriage; Sl. 48-49 apply it to men equally and cancel it when both partners have it. The 12th is the first house in that list. This engine's check is broader, six houses and no benefic exception, and grades the 12th-house case Mild; only the 7th and 8th are Moderate. The Mangal Dosha calculator shows the row and Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not covers the rule.

The two rules part on the benefic exception. A Mars in the 12th aspected by Jupiter, or joined by Venus, fails BPHS's narrower condition and still meets the engine's. Ch. 23 Sl. 13 turns on the same benefic aspect. In both classical rules, then, the question to ask of a 12th-house Mars is whether a benefic touches it.

The 12th and the 7th are linked another way for Mars. From the 12th, aspectedHouses('mars', 12) returns [6, 3, 7]: the 6th by the 7th aspect, the 3rd by the special 4th-place aspect, and the 7th by the special 8th-place aspect. So a 12th-house Mars aspects the house of partnership. Neither Ch. 80 nor the engine's dosha check is phrased in terms of aspects, and this page does not extend them; the observation is geometric only.

The Vipareeta yogas: six rising signs

This app detects the three Vipareeta Raja Yogas by one rule: the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th placed in one of those houses, named Harsha, Sarala and Vimala for the 6th, 8th and 12th lords. The yogas calculator reads them as difficulty converted into an unexpected source of gain, often after real struggle. Mars rules two signs, so for six rising signs a Mars in the 12th forms one of them.

AscendantMars inMars rulesYoga the engine namesBPHS Ch. 24 for that lord in the 12th

Lordship from SIGN_LORDS; yoga names as in the engine; Ch. 24 checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1781-2082); the lifespan clause is the text's statement.

The sourcing matters. The Bhrigu Sutras commentator quotes Uttara Kalamrita for the rule (in his comments on Jupiter in the 12th, p. 86), and in that quotation the 12th lord qualifies in the 8th or the 6th; the 12th lord in the 12th is his own extension "on the analogy of the above principles". BPHS agrees only for the 12th lord in the 8th (Ch. 24 Sl. 140) and reads the 12th lord in the 12th as heavy expenditure (Sl. 144). So for Taurus and Sagittarius rising the app's Vimala Yoga rests on the commentator's extension, while BPHS's own sloka for the same placement is unfavourable.

Against Sl. 144 stands Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4: the 12th lord in its own house gives spending on good accounts. The two can be read as measuring different things, the quantity of expense and its quality, without merging them. Taurus and Sagittarius rising are exactly that case, and they are also the two Lagnas where the commentator's own-sign relief applies. For Sagittarius, Mars also owns the 5th, a trine, and BPHS Ch. 34 calls it auspicious; Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 make a 12th lord's dasha favourable when it is associated with a trine lord, and here the 12th lord is one.

For Aries and Scorpio rising Mars is also the Lagna lord, and Ch. 24 Sl. 12 reads the Lagna lord in the 12th, when without benefic aspect or company, as little physical happiness, unfruitful spending and much anger. The sloka carries its own escape clause in the benefic aspect, as Ch. 23 Sl. 13 and Ch. 80 Sl. 47 do. Three separate rules on this page therefore hinge on one question.

For the two Vimala Lagnas Ch. 23 Sl. 5-6 adds a test the birth chart cannot settle: the 12th lord in an enemy's or debilitation Navamsa leaves the native troubled by expenses. Mars is the 12th lord for Taurus and Sagittarius, so its Navamsa sign is part of the reading; the Navamsa (D9) calculator gives it, and needs a birth time accurate to the minute.

BPHS also has a Raj Yog built on a weak Trika lord rather than a well-placed one. Ch. 39 Sl. 28 gives a Raj Yog when even one of the 6th, 8th or 12th lords is debilitated and aspects the Lagna. From the 12th Mars aspects the 6th, 3rd and 7th, never the 1st, so a Trika-lord Mars in the 12th cannot meet that sloka from where it sits. This app does not detect Ch. 39 Sl. 20 or 28 in any case.

The other six rising signs

Mars is in your 12th when it occupies the sign before your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. For the remaining Lagnas Mars is no Trika lord, and the general pattern of Ch. 24 applies: the matters of the house whose lord has moved into the 12th are spent.

Cancer and Leo are the costly rows by lordship: Mars is the Yoga Karaka for Cancer and auspicious for Leo in BPHS Ch. 34, and in the 12th it carries a trine and an angle into the house of expenditure. Leo adds the sign of fall. The 9th lord's sloka (Sl. 108) is the gentle one: loss of money, but spent on auspicious acts and hospitality, which the is loss of money but hardly loss of character. Aquarius rising gives the only exalted 12th-house Mars.

Sign, company and aspects

Saravali Ch. 25 Sl. 1-24, Mars by sign (pp. 76-78): Aries (Taurus rising) truthful, valorous, charitable, fierce; Scorpio (Sagittarius rising) attached to trade, endowed with land, highly sinful; Capricorn (Aquarius rising) wealthy, happy, famous; Pisces (Aries rising) diseases, lives abroad, insulted by relatives, loses wealth by cunning, yet famous; Cancer (Leo rising) deformed, sick, repeatedly anguished; Libra (Scorpio rising) loses his first wife, earns only to lose. The sign readings make no reference to house.

Company is what the sutra turns on: a malefic adds false vanity. Saravali Ch. 15's pairs: with the Sun, valorous, dull-witted and a liar (Sl. 3); with Saturn, a metallurgist, deceitful and fond of quarrels (Sl. 16); with the Moon, brave in war, an artisan (Sl. 8); with Jupiter, intelligent and expert in speech (Sl. 14). The Sun and Saturn are malefics, and with Rahu they are three of the planets in Ch. 23 Sl. 9. Jupiter is the benefic whose aspect or company changes Ch. 23 Sl. 13, Ch. 24 Sl. 12 and Ch. 80 Sl. 47 at once.

Of the three houses Mars aspects from the 12th, the 6th and 3rd are Upachayas, where the texts read Mars well when it occupies them; none of the three texts gives a verse for Mars aspecting them. The engine counts the aspects as malefic in the Shad Bala of planets there. See the 6th house and the 3rd house.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading's planet row is favourable only when dignity is strong and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. A Mars in the 12th therefore always gets "financial strain and health matters needing real care", even exalted for Aquarius rising or in its own sign for Taurus and Sagittarius. The favourable sentence written for the house, "some relief and steadiness when Mars is well-placed", records the commentator's own-sign relief, and the present rule never selects it.

dashaQuality() rates any dasha lord in a dusthana challenging regardless of sign, following BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6, which counts the 6th, 8th and 12th unfavourable. The Shad Bala does not apply the house verdict: its position score still follows dignity, and its directional score for Mars in the 12th, two houses from the 10th, is 2.67 of 4. So the strength label can read Medium or Strong while the planet row and dasha grade read testing. They measure different things and the app shows all of them.

Timing

Mars has 7 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 33 gives a debilitated or weak Mars, or one in an inauspicious house, a dasha of loss of wealth and distress; the 12th is such a house. Ch. 54 Sl. 5 gives Mars's own sub-period its adverse reading when Mars is in the 8th or 12th or joined or aspected by malefics: urinary troubles, wounds, and danger from snakes and the king, as the text's statement and not medical advice.

Ch. 48 adds the lordship themes. For Taurus and Sagittarius rising Mars's period is also the 12th lord's, which Sl. 2-8 head "distress and danger from diseases" and this app words as "expenses, distress or health matters needing attention"; Sl. 14-17 then make a 12th lord's dasha favourable when associated with a trine lord. Ch. 48 also says the placement at the start of the dasha counts, not only at birth; this app applies the natal test only. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates, and the Mars Mahadasha page the period.

For transits the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and a malefic in the 12th from the Moon is testing in the rule the engine follows. That is a transit rule, and it is unrelated to a natal Mars in the 12th from the Lagna.

The house rules all apply. Mars is in its own sign, the commentator's relief; it is the 12th lord in its own house, Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4's spending on good accounts and Ch. 24 Sl. 144's heavy expenditure together; the engine names Vimala Yoga on the commentator's extended rule. The engine also lists a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga: Mars, the 7th lord, and Saturn, the 9th and 10th lord, aspect each other, Mars from the 12th onto the 3rd by its 4th-place aspect and Saturn from the 3rd back onto the 12th. Mars falls under both of BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 15's worries, since it also owns the 12th.

The benefic question decides three rules here, and the answer is no. The only aspect on Mars in the engine's reason text is Saturn's, a malefic: Ch. 23 Sl. 13 is met as worded, and Mars in the 12th with no benefic aspect or company meets BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47 as well as the engine's Mangal Dosha rule. Jupiter and Venus are in Virgo, the 5th, and neither aspects Aries. The same mutual aspect with Saturn bears on Ch. 23 Sl. 11, which asks whether the 12th lord exchanges aspects with malefics: here it does, though whether Mars counts as the malefic "with" its own house is a question the text does not settle. The Mars Mahadasha arrives at about four, graded challenging; Mars at 17.58 degrees is in the middle decanate, which Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 tie to the middle of the period. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Mars is in the sign before your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Is Mars in Aries or Scorpio? That is the commentator's relief (Taurus or Sagittarius rising).
  3. Find what Mars rules. If it is a 6th, 8th or 12th lord, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala in the yogas list, and read BPHS's own Ch. 24 sloka beside it.
  4. Does a benefic aspect or join Mars? Ch. 23 Sl. 13, Ch. 24 Sl. 12 and Ch. 80 Sl. 47 all turn on it.
  5. Check the 2nd for Asubh Yog, and the 12th lord's company for Ch. 23 Sl. 11.
  6. Read the Mangal Dosha result knowing the engine has no benefic exception.

How a yoga in the list should be weighed is in what a yoga in your chart means. Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Mars in the 12th means poverty." The sutra says want of money; the commentator allows relief in own sign, and BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 give the 12th lord in its own house spending on good accounts.
  • "Vimala Yoga cancels the bad reading." BPHS reads the 12th lord in the 12th as heavy expenditure; the yoga rests on the commentator's extension.
  • "Exalted Mars in the 12th is favourable in the app." The planet row is always testing in the 12th, whatever the dignity.
  • "Mars in the 12th means settling abroad." Ch. 23 Sl. 11 needs malefics on both the house and its lord, with aspects exchanged; Mars in the house is one part.
  • "Mars in the 12th always means Mangal Dosha by BPHS." Ch. 80 Sl. 47 excepts a Mars with a benefic aspect or companion; the engine does not.
  • "A Medium Shad Bala contradicts the testing row." The score does not read the house verdict; it measures dignity, direction, aspect and time.

Questions about Mars in the 12th

Is Mars bad in the 12th house?
The verses are unfavourable and, per the Bhrigu Sutras commentator, every authority he consulted agrees, with some relief in Mars's own sign. The Vipareeta yogas and Ch. 23's rules for the 12th lord qualify it for several rising signs.
Which rising signs get relief by the commentator's rule?
Taurus (Mars in Aries) and Sagittarius (Mars in Scorpio), where Mars is in its own sign and is also the 12th lord.
Does Mars in the 12th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
For six rising signs this app names one: Harsha for Gemini and Scorpio, Sarala for Aries and Virgo, Vimala for Taurus and Sagittarius. BPHS agrees with the rule only for the 12th lord in the 8th.
Is Mars in the 12th Mangal Dosha?
In this engine, yes, graded Mild. BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 47 names the 12th too, but only for a Mars without a benefic aspect or companion.
What does Mars aspect from the 12th?
The 6th by its 7th aspect, the 3rd by its 4th-place aspect and the 7th by its 8th-place aspect.
Why is the app's line always testing here?
The planet row needs strong dignity and a house outside the 6th, 8th and 12th. The 12th fails the second test for every sign.
What does a benefic aspect change?
Three rules: Ch. 23 Sl. 13 on means of earning, Ch. 24 Sl. 12 for the Lagna lord in the 12th, and Ch. 80 Sl. 47's Mangal Dosha condition all apply only without one.
Is a Mars dasha difficult with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 and 33 read a Mars in the 12th unfavourably, and the app grades it challenging. Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 soften a 12th lord's period when a trine lord is involved, which applies to Sagittarius rising.
