Planet in house

What the classical texts say about Mercury in the 10th house: the Bhrigu Sutras' virtuous deeds and their reversal, Saravali from the Ascendant and the Moon, Bhadra and Amala Yoga, why the Sun so often sits beside it, Mercury as a lord placed in the 10th for every rising sign, and how this app grades it.

Mercury in the 10th house is a placement where the Bhrigu Sutras' closing Note reports every authority it quotes agreeing that a benefic Mercury here is "one of the most favourable dispositions in a horoscope". The sutras give success through virtuous deeds, patience and a wide reputation; Saravali gives distinguished intelligence, distinguished acts and success in undertakings. BPHS adds a fact that is easy to miss: in its list of house significators, Mercury is the karaka of the 10th.

The conditions are as specific as the praise, and one of them, a malefic beside Mercury, is met in a large share of real charts because the Sun is so often there. This page sets out the verses, the yogas, what Mercury owns from each rising sign, and how this app grades it, with one engine-computed chart. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 10th house, Karma Bhava.

Sources

Every classical statement here was checked against the corpus texts of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras (with the latter's quotations from Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani), and is cited by chapter, sloka or sutra and page. Where the texts speak of kings and royal honour, this page reads them as rank and recognition from an employer or an institution. Nothing here is a forecast about your career.

The karaka of the house, in the house

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives the 10th authority, place, profession or livelihood, honour, the father, living in foreign lands and debts. BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 name what is judged from Mercury: business dealings, livelihood and friends. Livelihood is on both lists. And Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34, which name one significator for each house, give the 10th to Mercury. So a Mercury in the 10th is the planet that signifies livelihood sitting in the house of livelihood.

The texts do not say what follows from that coincidence for Mercury. The Bhrigu Sutras commentator knows the old maxim that a karaka can harm the house it signifies ("Karko Bhava Nashaya", which he suggests behind Chamatkar Chintamani's reading of Jupiter in the 2nd, p. 76), but he does not apply it to Mercury in the 10th. This page notes the overlap and draws no conclusion from it.

Mercury itself, in BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 and Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10, is a benefic that takes the nature of its company: a benefic with benefics and a malefic with malefics. In the 10th, where BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 25-30 says a Yoga Karaka "will be significantly so", that company decides most of what the texts say.

What the verses say

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 67-70

The sutras (p. 71): success through virtuous deeds, patience, a widespread reputation, a great thinker; eye trouble in the 28th year, which the commentator calls illogical. Two conditions follow. In its own sign, exalted, or with Jupiter: many kinds of religious rites. In an enemy's house or with a malefic: "stupid, will indulge in sinful deeds and will be of bad conduct". The commentator (pp. 71-72) adds the Raja yoga of a 10th lord in the 10th, names Bhadra for own sign or exaltation, and quotes Amala yoga for a benefic Mercury here: "lasting fame and reputation", "spotless" character, a prosperous life.

Other Views (p. 72). Brihat Jatak: happy and powerful. Phaldeepika: learned, powerful, intelligent, happy, doing virtuous deeds, successful. Chamatkar Chintamani: paternal property, respected everywhere, the authority of a king, speaking less and doing more. Phaladeepika and Chamatkar Chintamani are cited as the Bhrigu Sutras quote them.

Saravali, from the Ascendant and from the Moon

Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 47 in full: the native will possess distinguished intelligence, perform distinguished acts, attain fruition in undertakings, be very learned, courageous and strong, and be endowed with various kinds of ornaments. Saravali's chapter on the 10th from the Moon (Ch. 33 Sl. 8-13) reads Mercury there as learned, rich, with abundant knowledge of sacred affairs, dear to the king, famous, acquainted with many an art and intelligent. Ch. 33 Sl. 2 says the Karmasthana is the 10th from whichever of the Ascendant and the Moon is stronger, prospering when that 10th lord is strong; it gives no method for choosing.

Condensed from the Bhrigu Sutras' 10th-house sutras (pp. 29, 42, 59, 71, 83, 95, 106).

Mercury's sutra, with the Sun's, has a stated reversal by sign as well as by company: for Mercury an enemy's sign is enough on its own. It also shares a word with Jupiter's, "deeds", and Mercury's upgrade is Jupiter's company. And Mercury appears in a second row: Venus in the 10th with Mercury, Jupiter and the Moon is the sutras' recipe for conveyances, a world-wide reputation and many Raja Yogas, so a Mercury in the 10th is also one of the three companions that sutra asks for.

The Sun beside Mercury

Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun; in a century of this engine's positions it shared the Sun's sign on 51.0 per cent of days and sat one sign either side on the rest. The house consequence follows: the Sun's house follows the clock, the 10th around midday, so a Mercury in the 10th belongs to a birth with the Sun in the 9th, 10th or 11th. A Mercury in the 10th at a midnight birth means the time or place needs checking first; what a missing birth time does covers what can be read without one.

That matters for three rules at once. First, the sutra's reversal "with a malefic": this engine counts the Sun among its five malefics, with Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Second, combustion: this engine marks Mercury combust within 14 degrees of the Sun, the Bhrigu Sutras within 8 1/2 (p. 8), and in the engine's century of positions Mercury was combust by the wider orb on 41.0 per cent of days. Third, Amala Yoga, below, which the engine refuses when a malefic joins. This app does not list Mercury with the Sun as a yoga of its own.

Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 4 reads Mercury with the Sun as in service, sweet in speech, with fame, money and learning, dear to the king and to good people, with unsteady wealth. That is a mild reading for a malefic's company, and it sits beside the sutra's "sinful deeds" without either text commenting on the other.

Bhadra and Amala Yoga

BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 and Saravali Ch. 37 Sl. 2 form Bhadra Yoga when Mercury is in its own or exaltation sign in an angle. In the 10th that happens for two rising signs: Virgo (Mercury in Gemini, its own sign) and Sagittarius (Mercury in Virgo, exalted). The app's one-line trait for it is "sharp-minded and articulate, well-read, independent-natured and protective of family"; the texts' body and lifespan lines are not carried. The yogas calculator lists it when present.

The Sagittarius case carries the degree question. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 split Virgo into exaltation (0-15 degrees), Moolatrikona (15-20) and own sign (20-30); this engine's dignity label follows the same bands. Past 20 degrees the texts and the engine say own sign, worth less on both BPHS's ladder and the engine's than exaltation. Bhadra is unaffected, since own sign qualifies too.

Amala Yoga, BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 5-6, is "exclusively a benefic in the 10th from Lagn, or Candr", with fame lasting "till Candr and stars exist". This app detects it when a natural benefic other than the Moon sits in the 10th from the Lagna or the Moon with no malefic joining or aspecting it, which is stricter than BPHS's wording. The practical effect: Mercury shares the Sun's sign on about half of all days, so the test removes it often. For a Mercury in the 10th, the Sun in the 10th as well is enough to stop Amala.

What Mercury owns, from each rising sign

Mercury is in your 10th when it occupies the tenth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a sloka for each house lord placed in the 10th, and nearly all read well, the 8th and 12th lords being the clear exceptions.

Natural dignity is dignityOf() with no chart; lordship from SIGN_LORDS; Ch. 24 condensed from bphs.txt (Sl. 22 many wives, no filial happiness; Sl. 34 nurturing wicked females; Sl. 70 not respectful to his father; Sl. 82 a disobedient wife; Sl. 94 a talebearer, not shown); Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44. "Killer" is BPHS's technical term for a timing class; this app computes no death timing.

The table is mostly neutral by dignity. Mercury's natural relations, derived by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, are friendly only to Venus and the Sun, hostile only to the Moon, and neutral to Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, so six of the twelve rows sit in a neutral's sign and their label depends on the temporary relation in your chart. One more point is specific to Mercury: for Leo in the 10th (Scorpio rising), the lord is the Sun, which is never more than one sign away. With the Sun in Leo too, it is a temporary enemy and the label falls to Neutral; with the Sun in Cancer or Virgo, a temporary friend, it stays Friendly.

The 10th lord in the 10th: Virgo and Sagittarius rising

For these two Lagnas Mercury is the 10th lord in its own or exaltation sign in the 10th, and Bhadra forms. BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 2: a strong 10th lord, exalted or in its own sign or Navamsa, gives extreme paternal happiness, fame and good deeds. Sl. 14 adds deeds when the 10th lord is exalted in an angle and joined or aspected by Jupiter, which for Sagittarius rising is Mercury in Virgo with Jupiter's company or aspect. Ch. 46 Sl. 35-36 make Chaturashiti-sama Dasha appropriate when the 10th lord is in the 10th.

One Raj Yog that Mars reaches from the 10th, Mercury cannot. BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 21 asks for the 10th lord in its own or exaltation sign aspecting the Lagna. Mercury's only full aspect is the 7th, so from the 10th it aspects the 4th alone, and the sloka's second condition cannot be met. The Kendra lordship rule also matters here. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 say benefics owning angles will not give benefic effects, and Sl. 8-10 make Mercury the second-least affected of the benefics. For Virgo Mercury owns the 1st and 10th, and the Lagna exempts it; for Sagittarius it owns the 7th and 10th, two angles, yet Ch. 34 still credits a Yoga with the Sun. This engine's Kendradhipati Dosha leaves Mercury out altogether.

Raj Yogas with a partner lord

The app flags Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga when the 9th and 10th lords share a house that is an angle or a trine. With Mercury in the 10th, four Lagnas can reach it there, and three of them are the pairs BPHS Ch. 34 names:

  • Sagittarius rising: Mercury (10th lord) in Virgo with the Sun (9th lord). Ch. 34: a Yoga with the Sun.
  • Virgo rising: Mercury (1st and 10th lord) in Gemini with Venus (9th lord). Ch. 34: with Venus forms a Yoga.
  • Libra rising: Mercury (9th lord) in Cancer with the Moon (10th lord). Ch. 34: with the Moon causes Raja Yoga. Mercury's dignity there is an enemy's sign, which the sutra separately reads as the reverse.
  • Capricorn rising: Mercury (9th lord) in Libra with Venus (10th lord; Ch. 34 Sl. 39-40: "only Śukr is capable of causing a superior Yog" for Capricorn).

For Sagittarius the Sun beside Mercury is both the yoga partner and the sutra's malefic, and very likely makes Mercury combust as well. The texts and the engine give each of those readings separately. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh one.

Strength and aspects

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 7-7 1/2 give Mercury directional strength from the arc to the 7th, full in the 1st and nil in the 7th. The 10th is halfway, and this engine gives Mercury 2 of 4 directional points there. Mercury is strong by day and night alike (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 35-38) and the engine gives it full time strength in every chart. Combustion is the large term: a combust planet loses its whole position score, and by the engine's arithmetic a combust Mercury can never reach the Strong band. The Shad Bala calculator shows each part.

From the 10th, aspectedHouses('mercury', 10) returns [4]: the 7th aspect on the 4th house. Mercury is a benefic in this engine, so its aspect raises the aspect score of any planet there. The texts state no result for it. Turned round, Mercury in the 10th is aspected by any planet in the 4th, by Mars from the 7th or 3rd, by Jupiter from the 6th or 2nd and by Saturn from the 8th or 1st. Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 25-66 read Jupiter's aspect on Mercury favourably in every sign group and Saturn's unfavourably in all but Mercury's own signs.

Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 1-24, Mercury by sign, add the temperament layer for each Lagna. The strong rows read well: Virgo (Sagittarius rising) virtuous, eloquent, skilled in writing and the arts; Gemini (Virgo rising) sweet in speech, an able speaker and poet. Sagittarius (Pisces rising) is generous despite a neutral lord: learned, a minister or teacher, skilled in speech and writing. Pisces (Gemini rising), the sign of fall, gives good conduct but no learning in shastra; Capricorn (Aries rising) mean and dull, does others' work. Saravali Ch. 45 gives the dignity lines: exalted, intelligent, foremost in the family and a skilful speaker; debilitated, mean and at enmity with relatives.

How this app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when Mercury's dignity label is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign; the 10th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. In this working tree the dignity function receives the chart, so the friendly and enemy grades include the temporary relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56.

  • Always favourable: Virgo rising (own sign) and Sagittarius rising (exalted).
  • Never favourable: Gemini rising (debilitated in Pisces) and Libra rising (Cancer, the Moon's sign, Neutral at best).
  • Favourable when the sign's lord sits 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from Mercury: Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Aquarius and Pisces rising (otherwise Enemy sign), and Leo, Scorpio and Capricorn rising (otherwise Neutral).

The line does not read company, so a Mercury exalted in the 10th beside the Sun and Mars still gets it, while the sutra's malefic clause points the other way. dashaQuality() is stricter: good for exalted or own sign, neutral for friendly or neutral, challenging for enemy sign or fall. Mercury also feeds the career and money calculator twice: as an occupant of the 10th, and as the significator of trade, where a Strong Mercury counts toward running one's own business and a Weak one toward a role where someone else owns the commercial side.

Timing

Mercury has 17 Vimshottari years. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 list wealth, reputation, better knowledge, favour from the government, happiness from wife and children and profit in business for a Mercury exalted or in its own or a friend's sign, and then name an upgrade: those results come in full if Mercury receives a benefic's aspect, sits in the 9th, or is the lord of the 10th. Mercury rules the 10th only for Virgo and Sagittarius rising, the two Lagnas where it is also in the 10th in its own or exaltation sign.

For those two, Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 add the 10th lord's theme: recognition from and awards by the government, which this app words as "career recognition and advancement, often with public or institutional backing". For Libra and Capricorn rising it is the 9th lord's period too. Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 time results by decanate, reversed when retrograde. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates and the Mercury Mahadasha page covers the period and its sub-periods.

For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and the benefic rule the engine follows rates Mercury favourable in the 10th from the Moon. That is a separate question from a natal Mercury in the 10th from the Lagna.

Dignity and lordship are as strong as they get: exalted at 8.56 degrees, inside every text's exaltation band, the 10th lord in the 10th, Bhadra, the Chaturashiti-sama condition, and BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65's full-results clause for the 10th lord. The planet row and dasha grade follow dignity and read favourable and good.

Company and condition read the other way. Mars and Ketu share Virgo, both malefics in this engine, which is the sutra's "with a malefic: the reverse". Amala Yoga is absent for the same reason. Mercury is 11.03 degrees from the Sun: combust by this engine's 14-degree orb, not by the Bhrigu Sutras' 8.5, and the engine's combustion rule takes its whole position score, leaving a Weak total. The Sun is in the 9th, not the 10th, so the Ch. 34 Yoga with the Sun is not formed as Dharma-Karmadhipati; the Kendra-Kona entry pairs Mercury with Mars, the 5th lord. The Moon is in Mrigashira, a Mars nakshatra, so the dasha sequence opens in Mars and runs through Rahu to 2030; Mercury's own period is decades away. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm Mercury is in the tenth sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator, and note the combust flag and where the Sun is.
  2. Read the dignity from the table above; in Virgo, note the degree.
  3. List Mercury's company: Jupiter is the sutra's upgrade, any malefic (the Sun included) its reversal.
  4. Find what Mercury rules, read both Ch. 24 slokas, and look for the 9th or 10th lord beside it.
  5. Check the yogas list for Bhadra and Amala, and remember the Sun alone stops Amala.
  6. Repeat the reading from the Moon, as Saravali Ch. 33 does.

The Dashamsa (D10) calculator gives a second look at career (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 read power and position from it). Method and limits are on the methodology page.

Over-readings

  • "Mercury in the 10th means a career in communication or trade." The verses name deeds, reputation, intelligence and success, not occupations; BPHS Ch. 21 names no professions.
  • "Exalted Mercury in the 10th is always good." The sutra reverses the result with a malefic, and the Sun is often beside it.
  • "A Bhadra Yoga means a strong Mercury." In the worked chart Bhadra is listed and the Shad Bala is Weak, because combustion removes the position score.
  • "Mercury in the 10th gives Amala Yoga." Only with no malefic joining or aspecting it in this app; the Sun in the 10th is enough to stop it.
  • "The app's favourable line means the sutra's good case applies." The line reads dignity; the sutra reads company too.
  • "Mercury in the 10th aspects the Lagna." Its only full aspect is the 7th, onto the 4th.

Questions about Mercury in the 10th

Is Mercury good in the 10th house?
The verses are favourable: success through virtuous deeds and a wide reputation (Bhrigu Sutras), distinguished intelligence and success in undertakings (Saravali). The sutras turn it to sinful deeds and bad conduct in an enemy's house or with a malefic.
Why does the Sun matter so much here?
Mercury is never more than a sign from the Sun, so with Mercury in the 10th the Sun is in the 9th, 10th or 11th. In the 10th it is a malefic companion, often makes Mercury combust, and stops the app's Amala Yoga.
Which rising signs get Bhadra Yoga from Mercury in the 10th?
Virgo (Mercury in Gemini) and Sagittarius (Mercury in Virgo). For both, Mercury is also the 10th lord in the 10th.
What does Mercury aspect from the 10th?
Only the 4th house, by its 7th aspect. It has no special aspects.
Why is my Mercury in the 10th marked testing?
Its dignity label is not Exalted, Own or Friendly. Gemini rising (debilitated in Pisces) and Libra rising (Cancer) never get the favourable line; several others depend on where the sign's lord sits.
Is Mercury the significator of the 10th house?
In BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34, yes. The texts draw no special conclusion from Mercury occupying the house it signifies.
Can Mercury in the 10th form a Raja Yoga?
With a partner lord: the Sun for Sagittarius rising, Venus for Virgo and Capricorn rising, the Moon for Libra rising. The app flags Dharma-Karmadhipati when the 9th and 10th lords share the house.
Is a Mercury dasha good with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 62-65 give a well-placed Mercury wealth, reputation and favour, in full when it rules the 10th. This app grades the period good for exalted or own sign, neutral for friendly or neutral.
