Planet in house

What the classical texts say about the Sun in the 6th house; why a natural malefic is read well in an Upachaya; the Bhrigu Sutras' inverted rule for the 6th lord; Vipareeta yogas by rising sign; and why this app's engine never prints the favourable line here.

The Sun in the 6th house is one of the few placements where the classical texts are kinder than the house's reputation. Saravali gives the Sun here strong digestion, strength, affluence and fame for virtues, and makes the person a king or an army chief. The Bhrigu Sutras give many enemies but a comfortable life. The reason is a rule that runs through both books: the 6th is a house of growth for malefics, and the Sun is a malefic.

And yet the line this app prints for a Sun in the 6th is always the testing one, whatever the Sun's sign. That is not a contradiction hidden in the code; it is a design choice, and this page explains it. For the planet in general see the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 6th house, Ari Bhava. This page is about where the two meet.

Where these readings come from

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The Bhrigu Sutras' Sun-in-the-6th passage (Sutras 59-68) opens with a caste clause, which this page does not repeat. The 6th is the house of illness in BPHS; body associations are named only as what a text says and are not medical advice.

A malefic in the house of enemies

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 7 defines the 6th in one line: the maternal uncle, doubts about death, enemies, ulcers and the step-mother. Ch. 17 Sl. 1 narrows it to diseases and ulcers. Saravali (Ch. 3 Sl. 26-27) names it Ari, enemy, and Vrana, a wound. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's list of house significations (Part I Ch. II, p. 15) adds what most modern readers know the house for: service, employees, debts and litigation. BPHS itself puts debts under the 10th (Ch. 11 Sl. 11), so "the 6th shows your debts" is one book's view.

The house carries three labels at once. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 makes it an Apoklima (cadent), a Dusthana (one of the three evil houses with the 8th and 12th) and an Upachaya (one of the four houses of increase with the 3rd, 10th and 11th). Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 33 gives the same Upachaya list. Which label wins depends on what is placed there.

For a malefic, the rule is stated outright. Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 (pp. 105-106) says malefics harm the houses they occupy except the 6th, 8th and 12th, where they are auspicious, and that results vary from maximum to nil with strength, aspects and dignity. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 lists the Sun among the natural malefics. So before any Sun-specific verse is read, the general rule has already put the Sun in a house where it is welcome.

Saravali's own verses show how far that rule goes. Of its verses for the seven planets in the 6th, the three natural malefics, Sun, Mars and Saturn (Sl. 7, 31, 79), get the best readings: strength, affluence, command, enemies conquered. The benefics fare worse: Venus with many foes and no wealth (Sl. 67), the Moon with stomach diseases (Sl. 19), Jupiter humiliated and weak though still a destroyer of enemies (Sl. 55). Saravali's kindest Sun-in-house verses are Sl. 4, 7 and 11, the 3rd, 6th and 10th, three of the four Upachayas; the 11th (Sl. 12) is mixed.

What the two texts say

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 7

The verse (p. 100): the native "will be very libidinous, will have powerful digestive fire (capable of digesting fast), be strong, affluent, famous for virtues and be either a king, or an Army chief". There is no deprivation clause in it at all, which makes it one of the most favourable Sun-in-house verses in Saravali. The digestion phrase is the verse's bodily line and is reported as such, not as medical advice.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 59-68

After the caste clause, the sutras (p. 24) give: many enemies but "very well off financially"; eye diseases in the 20th year, which do not come if the Sun is aspected by a benefic; wandering in jungles and great interest in chanting mantras; a good reputation, but mental worries and a hot constitution. If the 6th lord is with a benefic, the native enjoys good health and has many relations and many enemies; if the 6th lord is weak, enemies are destroyed. The last sutra adds that the father will have a weak constitution. Body lines are the text's, not medical advice.

Where Saravali has the person conquer, the Bhrigu Sutras have the person surrounded by enemies and doing well regardless. They also add costs Saravali does not name, mental worry and the eye and constitution lines, and a health clause that depends on the 6th lord's company. The commentator (p. 24) points out that Sutras 65-66 contradict themselves, giving good health and more enemies from the same benefic company, and adds his own view that a Sun in its own sign Leo here, free of malefic influence, should give only good results.

The inverted rule: a weak 6th lord helps

Most houses prosper when their lord is strong. BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16 states that for every house: a bhava does well when joined or aspected by a benefic or when its lord is well placed, and is harmed when the lord is with a malefic or with the lord of an evil house. The Bhrigu Sutras turn this round for the 6th. The Sun's sutras give destruction of enemies when the 6th lord is weak, and Venus Sutras 34-36 (p. 92) say the same from the other side: a strong 6th lord increases relations and enemies, while one with a malefic, debilitated or with the Moon brings loss of relations and destruction of enemies.

The commentator gives the reasoning under Venus (p. 92): "if the sixth house gets strength, there will be more enemies and diseases and if the sixth house is weak there will be no diseases and no enemies". Under the Sun (p. 24) he says the same of the 6th lord: "A lord of an evil house becomes more harmful if it becomes strong". A strong 6th means more of what the 6th signifies, and what the 6th signifies is trouble.

BPHS does not state that inversion as a general rule. Its nearest equivalents are specific verses: the 6th lord in the 12th gives long life (Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7), and the 8th lord in the 6th wins over enemies (Ch. 24 Sl. 90). So two classical attitudes are on record, and the Sun in the 6th sits across both. The Bhrigu Sutras want a weak 6th lord for fewer enemies, and a 6th lord with a benefic for good health. Those two conditions can pull against each other: a benefic beside the 6th lord is a strength by Ch. 11 Sl. 14-16, and a weak 6th lord is the relief the commentary describes.

With the Sun in your 6th, the 6th lord is the lord of the Sun's sign: Mars for Aries or Scorpio, Venus for Taurus or Libra, Mercury for Gemini or Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, Jupiter for Sagittarius or Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn or Aquarius, and the Sun itself for Leo. It is the same planet whose position decides the Sun's dignity in this engine.

Mars, the house's karaka, and BPHS Ch. 17's method

BPHS Ch. 32 lists a fixed significator for each house, and the sixth name in the list is Mars (Sl. 31-34). So the 6th has two planets to read before its occupant: its lord and Mars. When the Sun is in Aries or Scorpio in your 6th (Scorpio or Gemini rising), Mars is both at once. The Sun counts Mars a natural friend, so in those two rows the lord, the karaka and the dignity verdict all hang on one planet. See Mars in the 6th house for the karaka in its own house.

BPHS Ch. 17, the 6th-house chapter, is almost entirely about bodily harm, with diseases and ages attached to specific combinations; this page does not reproduce those as predictions, and neither does this page. Two points of method from it bear on the Sun. First, the chapter opens with where the 6th lord sits, not with what occupies the house (Sl. 2). Second, Sl. 3-5 apply the same test to relatives through a planet-to-body list in which the Sun stands for the head. That list belongs to a relative's significator in a specific combination, not to a Sun that simply sits in the 6th, and nothing in the chapter connects the two.

Your rising sign: dignity and lordship

Houses here are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Sun is in your 6th when it is in the sixth sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The rising sign fixes the Sun's sign, its dignity and the house it rules (wherever Leo falls). BPHS Ch. 24 gives one sloka for each house lord placed in the 6th; the table gives each in full, harsh clauses included, as the text's statements and not as forecasts.

This table reads very differently from Saravali's verse. Ch. 24 treats the 6th as a Dusthana: almost every lord placed there brings in enemies, illness or friction, and the good houses' lords lose something (the 5th lord its children, the 9th lord its prosperity, the 10th lord its wealth). Saravali's Sun verse describes the planet as a malefic in an Upachaya; Ch. 24 describes the lordship it carries into a Dusthana. The same tension runs through every planet in the 6th.

Four rows worth a closer look

  • Pisces rising: the Sun rules and occupies the 6th, in its own sign. Sl. 66 is mild. This app also reports Harsha Yoga, a Vipareeta Raja Yoga, because the 6th lord is in a Dusthana (below).
  • Capricorn rising: the Sun is the 8th lord in the 6th. Sl. 90 begins "wins over enemies", one of the two verses that are BPHS's nearest thing to the inversion. Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 adds that 8th lordship is not evil for the Sun. The app reports Sarala Yoga.
  • Virgo rising: the 12th lord in the 6th. Sl. 138 is harsh. The app reports Vimala Yoga for the same placement. Ch. 24 and the yoga describe one fact in opposite tones.
  • Cancer rising: Sl. 18 turns entirely on company. The same 2nd lord gains through enemies with a benefic and loses through them with a malefic. It is the clearest example of how these verses should be read.

Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44 gives the Sun a role for each Ascendant. For Scorpio rising, where the Sun is exalted in the 6th, it is the Yoga Karaka with the Moon; for Leo rising, the Lagna lord, auspicious; for Libra and Pisces rising, a malefic; for Capricorn rising, neutral.

Vipareeta Raja Yoga: three rising signs

This app's yogas calculator reports a Vipareeta Raja Yoga when the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th sits in any of those three houses: Harsha for the 6th lord, Sarala for the 8th, Vimala for the 12th. The Sun in the 6th is a lord in a Dusthana, so it forms one whenever it rules a Dusthana: Pisces rising (6th lord, Harsha), Capricorn rising (8th lord, Sarala) and Virgo rising (12th lord, Vimala).

The sourcing matters. The engine's reference is the modern case-study book Advanced Predictive Astrology, which names and uses the yoga in worked charts but does not print a numbered definition, so the engine applies the standard formation rule. BPHS Ch. 24 gives a 6th lord in the 6th a mild reading and in the 8th and 12th a negative one, with no sign of the idea that a Dusthana lord in a Dusthana becomes a Raja Yoga. So for these three rising signs the app shows two layers that disagree: a yoga in the yogas list and a testing line in the house card. Both are labelled; neither is hidden.

BPHS has one classical yoga in which the 6th lord is a required and positive ingredient: Shankh Yog (Ch. 36 Sl. 13-14), a strong Lagna lord with the 5th and 6th lords in mutual angles, read as wealth, spouse and children, a kindly intelligent nature and long life. For Pisces rising the Sun is the 6th lord and so can be one of its two lords. What a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh any yoga once found.

Why this app prints the testing line

The Kundali reading uses one test for every planet in every house. The favourable line prints only when the planet's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The second condition can never be met in the 6th. So the app's favourable string for this placement, "real gains and reputation - the Sun does well as a natural malefic in this upachaya house, especially in its own sign", exists in the code but is never shown. Every Sun in the 6th gets "health strain and a harder relationship with rivals under affliction".

The wording of the summary changes with dignity, though. When the Sun's dignity is weak (debilitated or an enemy sign), the testing sentence names that dignity; otherwise it names only the sign. An exalted Sun in Aries for Scorpio rising and an enemy-sign Sun in Taurus for Sagittarius rising both get the testing line, but only the second is described as weak.

This follows BPHS's Dusthana reading rather than Saravali's Upachaya one, and it is the same rule BPHS applies to dashas: Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6 make any dasha lord unfavourable in the 6th, 8th or 12th. The cost is that the one verse most favourable to this placement, Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 7, is not reflected in the app's line. A reader who wants Saravali's view should read the verse, and the engine's line as BPHS's.

The dasha panel goes the same way. dashaQuality() calls a planet challenging whenever it sits in a Dusthana, whatever its dignity, so the Sun in the 6th always reads as challenging there. The Sun Mahadasha page sets out both engine tests.

Strength in the 6th

BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 gives a planet in an Apoklima only a quarter of the positional strength called Kendradi Bal; in an angle it gets the full amount. Directional strength, as set out on the Sun in the 4th house page, is zero for the Sun at the 4th and full at the 10th; the 6th is two houses past the zero point, so it is still low. Both are Shad Bala components, and the Shad Bala calculator shows all six. A Sun in the 6th can be exalted (Scorpio rising) or in its own sign (Pisces rising) and score well on other components.

Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 32 adds a timing idea: planets in angles give effects in boyhood, in Panapharas in middle age, and in Apoklimas at the close of life. The 6th is an Apoklima. It is a single verse, and this app does not apply it.

The Sun's aspect on the 12th

From the 6th the Sun's only aspect, the 7th-sign aspect every planet has, falls on the 12th house; aspectedHouses() returns [12]. BPHS Ch. 26 gives special aspects only to Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. The 6th and 12th are both Dusthanas, and BPHS pairs them in its long-life verses (Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7: the 6th lord in the 12th, or the 6th lord in the 6th with the 12th lord in the 12th). None of the three texts gives a verse for the Sun aspecting the 12th, so this page states none. The engine counts it as a malefic aspect in Shad Bala. For the house, see the 12th house; for the Sun there, the Sun in the 12th.

Timing

The Sun's Mahadasha lasts six years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15) and it runs an Antardasha inside every other Mahadasha; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 12-15 describe the weak Sun's period, and among their conditions is the Sun being weak in Ari, Randhr or Vyaya. The verse says weak in those houses, not merely placed there, and two modifiers follow: a benefic aspect gives some favourable effects at times, a malefic aspect makes them always unfavourable.

For Pisces rising the Sun is also the 6th lord, and BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 give the 6th lord's dasha "danger from enemies and ill health"; this app's line is lower in temperature: "friction with rivals or health matters needing attention". BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 13 adds that a planet associated with a 6th, 8th or 12th lord, without an aspect from a trine lord, harms finances in its own dasha; the trine lord's aspect is the stated exception.

How a Sun Antardasha sits inside a longer Mahadasha is explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar.

The Sun passing through the 6th from your Moon

The Gochar calculator counts transits from the natal Moon. For a natural malefic, the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon are the good positions, and the engine marks the Sun there "a good transit position for a natural malefic from your Moon - real gains through direct effort". That month-long window is the transit counterpart of the Upachaya rule, and it has nothing to do with a natal Sun in the 6th house, which is counted from the Ascendant.

A worked chart

These are this app's engine figures for 19:00 IST on 10 April 1990 in New Delhi, an illustration of the rules and not a reading of any person. Three hours later the same Sun is in the 5th house of a Scorpio Ascendant, worked on the Sun in the 5th page.

The Sun's dignity is Friendly sign: Jupiter, lord of Pisces, is in Gemini, the 4th sign from the Sun, a temporary friend, and a natural friend too. In the 5th house that would print the favourable line. In the 6th it does not, and the dasha quality is challenging, both because of the house alone.

What the texts add. With Libra rising the Sun rules the 11th, so Ch. 24 Sl. 126 applies: illness, living in foreign places, troubled by enemies. Ch. 34 calls the Sun a malefic for Libra rising. Saravali Sl. 7, which ignores lordship, gives strength and affluence. The 6th lord, Jupiter, is in the 9th, a trine, and in a Neutral sign: not weak, so the Bhrigu Sutras' enemy-destroying condition is not met, and not joined by a benefic (Mercury is in Aries, Venus in Aquarius), so their good-health clause is not met either. No Vipareeta yoga forms for the Sun, which rules the 11th. The Sun's aspect falls on Virgo, the 12th, which is empty. The page reports these factors and does not net them.

Reading a Sun in the 6th in your own chart

  1. Confirm the placement in the birth chart calculator: the Sun is in the 6th if it occupies the sixth sign from the Ascendant. An uncertain birth time can move the Ascendant.
  2. Note that the app's house line will be the testing one; read it as BPHS's Dusthana view, and Saravali Sl. 7 as the Upachaya view.
  3. Find the house the Sun rules and read that row of the Ch. 24 table. If it rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, check the yogas list for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala.
  4. Find the 6th lord, the lord of the Sun's sign. Is it weak (the Bhrigu Sutras' condition for fewer enemies)? Is it with a benefic (their condition for good health)?
  5. Check for a benefic aspect on the Sun, which Ch. 47 Sl. 12-15 counts in the Sun's dasha.
  6. Weigh strength with the Vimshopaka Bala and Shad Bala calculators; Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale every result by strength.

How positions are computed and where the method stops is on the methodology page; the books behind the readings are on the sources page.

Misreadings to avoid

  • "A planet in the 6th is ruined." Saravali gives the Sun, Mars and Saturn in the 6th strength, affluence and victory. The house is hard on benefics, not on every planet.
  • "The app says testing, so the texts must say so too." The engine follows BPHS's Dusthana rule for every planet in the 6th; Saravali's Sun verse is favourable.
  • "A Vipareeta yoga cancels the Ch. 24 reading." The yoga comes from a modern book's usage; Ch. 24 is BPHS. The app shows both.
  • "A strong 6th lord is good." The Bhrigu Sutras read a strong 6th lord as more enemies and diseases, and a weak one as relief.
  • "Many enemies means I will be harmed." The same sutras that give many enemies give a comfortable life and a good reputation.
  • "The 6th from my Moon in transit is my 6th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about the Sun in the 6th

Is the Sun in the 6th house good?
In Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 7, yes: strong, affluent, famous for virtues, a king or an army chief. The Bhrigu Sutras give many enemies but a comfortable life. BPHS Ch. 24 reads most lords in the 6th poorly, and this app follows BPHS's Dusthana rule.
Why does the app show the testing line even when my Sun is exalted here?
Because the favourable line requires the house not to be the 6th, 8th or 12th. In the 6th the testing line always prints; only its wording changes with dignity.
Why are malefics good in the 6th?
The 6th is an Upachaya, a house of increase, and Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 says malefics are auspicious in the 6th, 8th and 12th. BPHS calls the same house a Dusthana; both labels are in Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36.
Does a Sun in the 6th form a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
In this app, when the Sun rules a Dusthana: Pisces rising (Harsha), Capricorn rising (Sarala) and Virgo rising (Vimala). The yoga comes from a modern book's usage, and BPHS Ch. 24 reads those placements more harshly.
What does the 6th lord have to do with it?
The Bhrigu Sutras give destruction of enemies when the 6th lord is weak and good health when it is with a benefic. With the Sun in the 6th, the 6th lord is the lord of the Sun's sign.
What does the Sun aspect from the 6th?
Only the 12th house. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it; the engine counts it as a malefic aspect in Shad Bala.
Is the Sun Mahadasha difficult with this placement?
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 12-15 describe the weak Sun's dasha, including a Sun weak in the 6th, 8th or 12th, and soften it when a benefic aspects the Sun. This app's dasha quality reads any planet in the 6th as challenging.
Does a Sun in the 6th say something about debts or service?
Only in one source's framing of the house. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (Part I Ch. II) puts service, employees, debts and litigation under the 6th; BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 puts debts under the 10th. Neither Sun verse mentions debts.
Is a Sun transiting the 6th from my Moon the same?
No. That transit lasts about a month and the engine marks it favourable for a malefic. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant.
