Planet in house

What the classical texts say about the Sun in the 12th house: the Bhrigu Sutras' reading and its reversal, BPHS Ch. 23 on spending and travel, the Vimala Yoga dispute for Virgo rising, the other rising signs, and why this app always prints the testing line here.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

Vyaya means expenditure, what goes out. The 12th is the sign that rose just before you were born, and BPHS defines it in half a sloka: expenses, the history of enemies, and one's own death (Ch. 11 Sl. 13). Saravali gives the Sun here a weak, deformed body and a cold relation with the father. The Bhrigu Sutras read it as wasteful spending, loss of wealth and life away from one's native land. Then, as for almost every planet in this house, they give a condition that reverses the reading.

This page sets out that reading and its reversal, the BPHS rules for spending and travel that a Sun in the 12th touches, the one rising sign where a commentator calls the placement good, and why this app's engine always prints the cautious line here. For the planet see the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 12th house, Vyaya Bhava.

Sources, a gap, and what is left out

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. An earlier version of this page said Saravali's Sun-in-the-12th verse was not available; it is (Ch. 30 Sl. 13) and is quoted below. The old texts speak about the afterlife in this house; those verdicts are named where they involve the Sun and reported as the text's statements. Body lines are not medical advice. Nothing here is a statement about your finances, your character or what follows death.

The Bhrigu Sutras on the Sun in the 12th

Sutras 103-110 (p. 31): appendicitis in the 36th year; money wasted on undesirable purposes; sinfulness and loss of wealth; an accusation of killing a cow; life away from the native land. If the Sun is "associated with strong and auspicious planet or planets", the native "will enjoy blessings of God" and bed comforts; with malefics, wasteful expenditure and no bed comforts. With the 6th lord, the text names leprosy, recovered from if a benefic aspects the Sun, and a closing sutra adds aggravation of disease. The body lines are the text's statements, not medical advice. The commentator (p. 31) says the Sun here "will give only unfavourable results", less so with a benefic in the 12th, and adds a specific case: the Sun in its own sign Leo in the 12th is good and gives "Vipreet Rajayoga".

Two parts of that reading are worth separating. The reversing condition is company: the sutra asks for strong, auspicious planets with the Sun, not for the Sun itself to be strong. The Leo case is narrower and has a mechanical meaning: Leo is the 12th sign only for Virgo rising, where the Sun is the 12th lord sitting in its own house.

The BPHS line is unusual. Ch. 10, a chapter of antidotes to early-life dangers, says in Sl. 6: "Sūrya in Vyaya will confer a hundred-year life span on one born in Tul Lagn"; for Libra rising the 12th is Virgo. It is recorded here for completeness. This app does not compute lifespans and this page treats it the same way.

What the house holds, and what was added later

Parashara's definition is three items: expenses, the history of enemies, one's own death. Foreign lands, sleep, hospitals and spirituality are not in it. Some later themes have roots in Parashara's own chapter on the house, Ch. 23, which speaks of beds and scented articles, wandering from country to country, expenses on religious grounds and final emancipation, but as results of particular combinations. The Bhrigu Sutras edition's significations list (Part I Ch. II, p. 16) gives the long modern list (loss, restraint, charity, separation, distant places, confinement, secret enemies, bed comforts, debts, foreign life, Moksha), and points to a later work, Uttara Kalamrita, for the rest.

Saravali's own verse (Ch. 30 Sl. 13, p. 101) is the bleakest of the three: the native "will have a deformed physique, be one-eyed, fallen (morally), will marry a barren lady, be inimical to his father, weak and mean". It has no condition, and like the other harsh lines it is the text's statement, not a forecast. The Bhrigu Sutras' Sun reading draws on both layers: wasteful spending is Parashara's Vyaya, life away from the native land and bed comforts are the later list. Advanced Predictive Astrology, a modern case-study book, sums up the two faces as a "lower octave" of food, bed and comforts and a "higher octave" of moksha, and adds that the house is best left unoccupied (Vol. II p. 71-72).

The 12th is a Dusthana and an Apoklima (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36). Ch. 32 Sl. 35-37 says association with the Trikas, the three Dusthanas, "will inflict evils". The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator gives the logic of the house in his note on the Moon: the 12th is the twelfth from the 1st, the house of birth, so it represents the end. The house behind any house is read as what that house spends.

BPHS Ch. 23 and a malefic in the 12th

The house's own chapter has fourteen slokas, and its subject is what you spend on and whether you stay or wander, judged from the 12th lord and the planets in or aspecting the house. Three of its tests turn on whether a malefic is involved, and the Sun is a natural malefic (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11).

  • Sl. 1-4, good spending: expenses "on good accounts" if the 12th lord is with a benefic, in its own house or exalted, or if a benefic occupies the 12th. The Sun is not a benefic, so it does not meet the last clause; for Virgo rising it is the 12th lord in its own house, which meets the second.
  • Sl. 11-12, travel: one will "wander from country to country" if the 12th lord and the 12th house are with malefics and the lord exchanges aspects with malefics; with benefics in the same positions, one "will move in his own country". A Sun in the 12th is a malefic with the house; the lord's company and aspects are the rest of the test.
  • Sl. 13: "Earnings will be through sinful measures, if Vyaya is occupied by Śani, or Mangal etc." without a benefic's aspect. The verse does not say whether "etc." includes the Sun, and this page does not extend it.

Sl. 11 matters for the Sun's "life away from the native land": the classical basis for "the 12th means going abroad" is a malefic combination, paired with a benefic one that keeps a person at home. The text treats distance as displacement, not as opportunity. The Bhrigu Sutras' clause and Sl. 11 point the same way.

Ch. 23 Sl. 9 names the Sun twice: Rahu in the 12th with Mars, Saturn and the Sun, or the 12th lord with the Sun, is read as going "to hell" after death. Sl. 10 gives the benefic counterpart, final emancipation. They are the text's statements about what follows death, recorded here and not applied; this app has no feature built on them.

BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 1-2 pair the houses on either side of the Lagna: benefics in both the 12th and the 2nd form Subh Yog, malefics in both form Asubh Yog. A Sun in the 12th is the malefic half of Asubh Yog, which forms if a malefic also occupies your 2nd. See the 2nd house for the other half.

Rising signs and the lordship verses

Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Sun is in your 12th when it occupies the sign before your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The rising sign fixes the Sun's sign, dignity and the house it rules (wherever Leo falls). BPHS Ch. 24 gives each house lord in the 12th one verse, and nearly every row carries the same idea: the matters of the house whose lord has moved here are spent.

Sign and lordship from SIGN_LORDS; dignity is dignityOf() with no chart (natural relation only); Ch. 24 rows checked against BPHS (bphs.txt 1773-2085). Harsh clauses are the text's statements, not forecasts.

This is the hardest of the Sun's Ch. 24 columns. Two rows soften it. The Lagna lord's verse carries its own escape clause: the bad result applies only when the planet is without benefic aspect or company. And the 9th lord here spends on auspicious acts and hospitality, which is loss of money but not of character. The 11th lord's row is similar.

The Vimala Yoga dispute: Virgo rising

For Virgo rising the Sun is the 12th lord in Leo, its own sign, in the 12th. Three readings meet here and do not agree. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator calls the Sun in Leo in the 12th good and a Vipareeta Raja Yoga, and this app's yogas calculator reports Vimala Yoga for any 12th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th. BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 count a 12th lord in its own house as spending on good accounts. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 144 reads the 12th lord in the 12th as only heavy expenditure.

The sourcing matters. Under Jupiter in the 12th (p. 86) the commentator quotes Uttara Kalamrita for the Vipareeta rule, and in that quotation the 12th lord qualifies when it is in the 8th or 6th, or when the three Trika lords are connected with each other; the 12th lord in the 12th is the commentator's own extension "on the analogy of the above principles". BPHS supports the 8th-house case (Ch. 24 Sl. 140) and not the 6th or 12th. Sl. 144 and Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 measure different things, the quantity of expense and its quality, and this page does not merge them.

Other rising signs with a twist

  • Pisces rising: the Sun is the 6th lord in the 12th, so the app reports Harsha Yoga. BPHS Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7 list the 6th lord in the 12th among the long-life combinations; Ch. 24 Sl. 72 reads it harshly.
  • Capricorn rising: the Sun is the 8th lord in the 12th, so the app reports Sarala Yoga, while Ch. 24 Sl. 96 gives a short life. BPHS Ch. 34 says the Sun's 8th lordship is not evil. This app computes no lifespan.
  • Leo rising: the Sun is the Lagna lord in the 12th. Sl. 12 depends on benefic aspect or company. BPHS Ch. 42 Sl. 2 has a penury combination with the Lagna lord in the 12th and the 12th lord in the Lagna under a Maraka lord's influence; for Leo rising that would need the Moon in Leo.
  • Taurus rising: the Sun is exalted in Aries, its best dignity, and rules the 4th; Sl. 48 removes domestic comforts. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale results by strength.

BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 20 and 28 form Raj Yogas from fallen, inimical or combust 6th, 8th and 12th lords with a strong Lagna lord aspecting the Lagna. Parashara rewards the weakness of the Trika lords, not their placement in a Trika house. A Sun in the 12th is a Trika lord only for Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces rising, and in none of those is it debilitated. This app does not detect those two slokas.

When the Sun is the Lagna lord: Leo rising in detail

Leo rising is the one Ascendant for which the Sun in the 12th is the native's own significator moved into the house of expenditure, and several BPHS verses are written for exactly that case. They differ in what else they ask for, which is the point of setting them side by side.

  • Ch. 24 Sl. 12: the Lagna lord in the 12th gives little physical happiness, unfruitful spending and much anger only when it is without benefic aspect or company. A benefic aspecting the Sun, or sharing Cancer with it, lifts the verse.
  • Ch. 23 Sl. 14: if the Lagna lord is in the 12th while the 12th lord is in the Lagna with Venus, expenses will be on religious grounds. For Leo rising that is the Sun in Cancer and the Moon in Leo with Venus.
  • Ch. 42 Sl. 2: the same exchange of the Lagna and 12th lords, joined or aspected by a Maraka lord, is a combination for penury. Ch. 23 Sl. 14 and Ch. 42 Sl. 2 start from one exchange; Venus's company gives the first, a Maraka lord's influence the second.
  • Ch. 42 Sl. 6: the Lagna lord joined with a Trika lord and without a benefic's aspect. For Leo rising the Moon is the 12th lord, so a Sun and Moon together in Cancer meet the first half.
  • Ch. 42 Sl. 5: the Lagna lord with a malefic in the 6th, 8th or 12th while the 2nd lord is debilitated or in an enemy's sign.

The common thread is Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7's rule: the 12th lord's results, and the results of what it touches, depend on association. A benefic's aspect is the escape clause in Sl. 12 and Sl. 6 alike. Ch. 42 Sl. 13 turns the same idea into timing: a planet associated with a Trika lord, without the aspect of a trine lord, harms finances in its own dasha.

Ch. 23 on the 12th lord's condition

With the Sun in your 12th, the 12th lord is the lord of the Sun's sign. Ch. 23 Sl. 5-6 read that lord in the 6th or 8th, or in an enemy's or debilitation Navamsa, as being "troubled by expenses"; in an angle or trine, the text says a spouse is obtained. The Navamsa is named repeatedly in these slokas, so they cannot be applied from the birth chart alone; the Navamsa calculator gives the lord's Navamsa sign. Sl. 7 adds a method note: the same deductions are made for relatives from their own houses, the 3rd for siblings and so on.

One more structural fact follows from where the Sun sits. BPHS Ch. 30 builds the Upa Pad on "the Bhava following the natal Lagn", and this app follows the translator's note that resolves the phrase as the 12th house for an odd rising sign and the 2nd for an even one. For Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius rising, then, the Sun in the 12th occupies the house the Upa Pad is counted from. The Bhava Padas calculator shows the result; the Sun's presence does not by itself change the calculation.

Why this app's line is always the testing one

The Kundali reading prints a planet's favourable line only when its dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. In the 12th the second condition always fails. The favourable string for this placement, "quiet strength and, in its own sign, capable of forming a genuine Vipareeta Raja Yoga here", follows the commentator's Leo case, and it is never shown. Every Sun in the 12th gets "real financial strain and setbacks otherwise".

So for Virgo rising, the app shows the testing line in the house card and Vimala Yoga in the yogas list for the same Sun: the first follows BPHS's Dusthana rule, the second the wider modern Vipareeta rule. The same limit applies to every planet in the 12th. The summary sentence names the Sun's dignity only when it is weak, so an exalted Sun (Taurus rising) and an own-sign Sun (Virgo rising) are described by sign only.

The dasha panel agrees: dashaQuality() calls any planet in a Dusthana challenging, following BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 5-6. The Sun Mahadasha page sets out both engine tests. The dignity itself is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58 with the sign's lord, which in the 12th is the 12th lord: the planet Ch. 23 and Ch. 34 make decisive for the house.

Strength in the 12th, and the aspect on the 6th

The 12th is an Apoklima, and BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 gives a planet there a quarter of Kendradi Bal, the lowest of the three classes. Directional strength, by the arithmetic of Ch. 27 Sl. 7 set out on the Sun in the 4th house page, is measured for the Sun from the 4th house; the 12th is four signs short of it going round, which puts it about as far from the zero point as the 8th. The Shad Bala calculator gives the figures.

From the 12th the Sun aspects the 6th; aspectedHouses('sun', 12) returns [6]. Both are Dusthanas, and BPHS pairs them in its long-life verses (Ch. 19 Sl. 4-7). None of the three texts gives a verse for the Sun aspecting the 6th from the 12th; the engine counts it as a malefic aspect in Shad Bala. For the house, see the 6th house; for the Sun in it, the Sun in the 6th.

Timing

The Sun's Mahadasha lasts six years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15) and recurs as an Antardasha in every other period; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates. Ch. 47 Sl. 12-15 describe the weak Sun's period, including a Sun weak in Vyaya, and soften it when a benefic aspects the Sun. Ch. 48 adds that a planet in the 6th, 8th or 12th "at the commencement of the Dasha" yields adverse results, so the position at birth and at the start of the period are both to be considered; this app applies the natal half.

For Virgo rising the Sun's dasha is also the 12th lord's, and Ch. 48 gives "distress and danger from diseases"; this app words it "expenses, distress or health matters needing attention". Ch. 48 Sl. 14-17 qualify it at once: the dasha of a 6th, 8th or 12th lord becomes favourable if it is associated with the lord of a trine. The Sun owns no trine for Virgo rising, so that relief would come from a trine lord joined with it.

Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon, and the engine marks the 12th from the Moon testing for every planet; the Sun stays there about a month. That is unrelated to a natal Sun in the 12th house, and different again from Vasi Yoga, which counts the 12th from the Sun.

The Sun's dignity is Friendly sign (Jupiter is in the 4th sign from it, a natural and temporary friend), but the house line is the testing one and the dasha quality challenging, both because of the house. With Aries rising the Sun rules the 5th: Ch. 24 Sl. 60, little happiness from his own children. The 12th lord, Jupiter, is in the 3rd: Ch. 24 Sl. 135, little happiness from siblings. Jupiter is also the 9th lord here, a trine lord, which Ch. 34 counts in its favour.

For Ch. 23 Sl. 11-12 the 12th house holds one malefic, the Sun, and the 12th lord sits alone in Gemini. The 2nd house, Taurus, is empty, so Asubh Yog does not form. The Sun's aspect lands on the Moon in Virgo, the 6th. No Vipareeta yoga forms through the Sun, which rules the 5th. The page lists the factors the texts name and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm the Sun is in the sign before your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Expect the testing line from the app; read the Bhrigu Sutras' reversing condition yourself.
  3. Find the house the Sun rules and read its Ch. 24 row; if it rules the 6th, 8th or 12th, look for Harsha, Sarala or Vimala in the yogas list.
  4. Find the 12th lord (the lord of the Sun's sign): its house, dignity, company and Navamsa, as Ch. 23 Sl. 1-6 ask.
  5. Check the 2nd house for a malefic (Asubh Yog) or a benefic.
  6. For the house's Arudha (the Vyaya Pad of BPHS Ch. 29), use the Bhava Padas calculator.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books are on the sources page.

Readings that outrun the texts

  • "The Sun in the 12th means I will settle abroad." The Bhrigu Sutras say life away from the native land, and BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 11 makes wandering a malefic combination involving the 12th lord too. Neither is a forecast.
  • "The Sun in the 12th means loss." The same sutras reverse the reading when strong, auspicious planets join the Sun, and Saravali's general rule makes malefics auspicious in the 12th.
  • "Vimala Yoga makes it good." For Virgo rising, the yoga, Ch. 23 Sl. 1-4 and Ch. 24 Sl. 144 disagree; the app shows both the yoga and the testing line.
  • "The app says testing, so the texts agree." The engine applies the Dusthana rule to every planet in the 12th.
  • "The 12th from my Moon in transit is my 12th house." Transits count from the Moon; natal houses from the Ascendant.

Questions about the Sun in the 12th

Is the Sun in the 12th house bad?
Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 13 is harsh and unconditional. The Bhrigu Sutras give wasteful spending, loss of wealth and life away from the native land, reversed when strong, auspicious planets join the Sun. Their commentator calls the Sun in Leo in the 12th good. BPHS reads most lords in the 12th as spending that house's matters.
Does the Sun in the 12th mean living abroad?
The Bhrigu Sutras include life away from the native land, and BPHS Ch. 23 Sl. 11 gives wandering when the 12th and its lord are with malefics. Parashara's definition of the house does not mention foreign lands.
Why does the app always show the testing line?
Its favourable line requires a house other than the 6th, 8th or 12th. The favourable string, which follows the commentator's Leo case, is never shown.
Is the Sun in Leo in the 12th a Vipareeta Raja Yoga?
The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator says so, extending a rule he quotes from Uttara Kalamrita, and this app reports Vimala Yoga. BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 144 reads a 12th lord in the 12th as heavy expenditure.
What does the Sun aspect from the 12th?
The 6th house. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it; the engine counts it as a malefic aspect.
What is the hundred-year line in BPHS?
Ch. 10 Sl. 6 credits the Sun in the 12th with a hundred-year span for a Libra Lagna. It is a single line with no stated method. This app computes no lifespan.
Is a Sun transiting the 12th from my Moon the same?
No. That month-long transit is counted from the Moon and marked testing for every planet. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant.
