Planet in house

What the classical texts say about the Sun in the 11th house: Saravali's mixed verse and the Bhrigu Sutras' wealth reading, the Upachaya rule, the 11th counted from the Sun, a Great Affluence yoga, the dasha contradiction inside BPHS, and how this app grades it.

The 11th is the house of gains, and the classical texts welcome almost any planet in it. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator calls it "very auspicious and beneficial for almost all planets unless they are lords of bad houses or there is malefic influence on them", and, under the Sun in the 3rd, states that malefics in the Upachayas give beneficial results. The Sun, a malefic, fits that rule: the Bhrigu Sutras give it income from land and more wealth through wealth, and Saravali gives it money and success in undertakings.

Saravali also gives it a cold edge: hating others, without servants, "himself a servant", lacking affection. And BPHS contains a contradiction about this placement that it never resolves: one chapter counts the Sun in the 11th among the conditions of a strong Sun dasha, and the next lists the dashas of planets in the 11th as unfavourable. This page sets out both, with the rising-sign layer and the app's reading. For the planet see the Sun in Vedic astrology; for the house, the 11th house, Labha Bhava.

Sources, and money

Every classical statement here was checked against the English translations of BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras used by this app, and is cited by chapter and verse. The texts describe gains in a court economy, in gold coins and royal favour; this page reads them as the direction and ease of income, not amounts or dates. Nothing here is a financial forecast or financial advice.

The two verses

Saravali Ch. 30 Sloka 12

The verse (p. 101): one "will be interested in gathering money, be strong, will hate others, be devoid of servants, be himself a servant, be devoid of affection, be modest and will be successful in undertakings". It sits beside Saravali's kind Sun verses for the 3rd, 6th and 10th, but it is the most mixed of the seven planets' 11th-house verses (Sl. 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84): no planet gets a bad verse in the 11th, and Jupiter's (few sons, limited education) is the only other with a cost, but the Sun's pairs money and success with a cold, serving temperament.

The Bhrigu Sutras, Sutras 96-102

The sutras (p. 30): "substantial income from agricultural operations"; conveyances in the 25th year; more wealth through wealth and diplomatic talk; a serious kind of fever; cordial relations with employees. With a malefic: "lot of expenditure" and no conveyance. In its own sign or exalted: immense wealth. Joined with the 4th lord: income from many places, conveyances, great fortune. The fever line is the text's, not medical advice. The Bhrigu Sutras say nothing of the servant clause. They attach the familiar pair of conditions, own sign or exaltation for the best case and malefic company for the worst, and the worst case is not a loss of income but an outflow beside it.

The commentator's exception matters for the Sun: it rules a Dusthana, a "bad house", for three rising signs. For Pisces rising it is the 6th lord, for Capricorn rising the 8th lord, and for Virgo rising the 12th lord. For those three, by the commentator's rule, the Sun is not one of the planets that simply prospers here.

Why the 11th welcomes malefics

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 33-36 make the 11th a Panaphara and an Upachaya, a house of growth with the 3rd, 6th and 10th; Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 33 gives the same four. It is not an angle, a trine or a Dusthana, so this app never penalises a planet in the 11th for its house. Neither verse that lists the Upachayas explains the term, but the practical consequence in the texts is that natural malefics are read favourably there.

Saravali's own general rule pulls the other way. Ch. 30 Sl. 86-87 say malefics harm the houses they occupy except the 6th, 8th and 12th, which does not exempt the 11th. Yet its individual verses for the Sun, Mars and Saturn in the 11th are favourable (Sl. 12, 36, 84). For this house, the specific verses, not the general rule, carry the reading.

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 12 lists the house's items: all articles, the son's wife, income, prosperity and quadrupeds. Friends and elder siblings, the meanings most modern readers give it, come from the Bhrigu Sutras edition's modern list of significations (Part I Ch. II, p. 15), not from Parashara. The Sun verses speak only of money, conveyances, health and temperament.

The 11th counted from the Sun

BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 say whatever is known from the 10th and 11th houses should also be known from the similar houses counted from the Sun, and that the 11th's matters should also be read from the 11th counted from the Moon. So the text asks for three readings of gains: from the Ascendant, from the Sun and from the Moon.

With the Sun in the 11th house, those counts come apart in a fixed way. The 11th from the Sun is the 9th house from the Ascendant. So for anyone with this placement, BPHS's second reading of gains looks at the house of fortune, and whatever occupies your 9th is in the 11th from your Sun.

The 11th from the Moon depends on where the Moon is, and the Moon sign calculator gives the sign to count from. Saravali's Dhana Yoga verse (Ch. 13 Sl. 32), which counts benefics in the four Upachayas, is also stated as valid from the Moon.

Rising signs: dignity and lordship

Houses are whole signs from the Ascendant, so the Sun is in your 11th when it occupies the eleventh sign from your rising sign; the Lagna calculator finds yours. The rising sign fixes the Sun's sign, dignity and the house it rules (wherever Leo falls). BPHS Ch. 24 gives a verse for each house lord placed in the 11th, and almost every lord gains something there.

Only the 12th lord (Virgo rising) brings plain loss into the house of gain, and the 8th lord (Capricorn rising) depends on its company. Even the 6th lord gains here, through enemies. Two verses, Sl. 71 and Sl. 83, trade income against happiness from children, and the geometry may be why: the 11th is opposite the 5th, and a planet in the 11th aspects the 5th.

Three rising signs worth a closer look

  • Libra rising. The Sun is the 11th lord in its own sign in the 11th. BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2: the 11th lord in the 11th gives "many gains"; Ch. 24 Sl. 131 agrees; the Bhrigu Sutras' own-sign case gives immense wealth. Against that, BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 2-7 says a planet owning the 3rd, 6th or 11th gives evil effects, the 11th lord most of all. Ch. 34 Sl. 33-34 call the Sun a malefic for Libra rising.
  • Gemini rising. The Sun is exalted in Aries and rules the 3rd, another Upachaya. The Bhrigu Sutras' best case applies. BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 10 gives wealth "through co-borns" for an exchange between the 3rd and 11th lords, which here would need Mars, the 11th lord, in Leo.
  • Sagittarius rising. The Sun is debilitated in Libra but rules the 9th, and Sl. 107 gives gains "day by day". BPHS Ch. 24 Sl. 145-148 scale every result by strength, and a debilitated Sun delivers little of it.

Wealth combinations the Sun can join

BPHS Ch. 41 Sl. 2-8 list seven Great Affluence yogas, each with a planet in its own sign in the 5th and named planets in the 11th. In Sl. 5 the planet in the 5th is Saturn, in its own sign, and the planets required in the 11th are the Sun and the Moon. Saturn owns Capricorn and Aquarius, which are the 5th for Virgo and Libra rising, so the Sun in the 11th is half of the 11th-house requirement there: in Cancer for Virgo rising, in Leo for Libra rising, joined by the Moon in each case. This app's yoga engine reports these only when the full condition is met.

  • BPHS Ch. 39 Sl. 48: all benefics in angles with malefics in the 3rd, 6th and 11th lets the native, "though may be of mean descent", "ascend the throne". The Sun can be the malefic in the 11th; the other conditions must also hold.
  • BPHS Ch. 40 Sl. 2 needs the 10th and 11th free of malefic occupation and aspect, with the 11th aspected by its own lord. A Sun in the 11th is a malefic occupant, so this verse cannot be met while it is there.
  • BPHS Ch. 40 Sl. 12 gives gain "through royal association" when the 11th holds its own lord and no malefic aspects it, with an Atma Karaka condition. For Libra rising the Sun is that lord in its own house.
  • BPHS Ch. 13 pairs the 2nd and 11th lords for wealth (Sl. 4-5). For Cancer rising the Sun is the 2nd lord in the 11th, one half of the Sl. 4 exchange; Venus, the 11th lord, would need to be in Leo.

BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 11 gives the one 11th-house combination in which the Sun is a named ingredient against the native: Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars together in the 11th, read as "cessation of his duties". It needs all four. The yogas calculator lists what your chart forms, and what a yoga in your chart means explains how to weigh it.

How the app grades it

The Kundali reading prints the favourable line when the Sun's dignity is Exalted, Moolatrikona, Own sign or Friendly sign and the house is not the 6th, 8th or 12th. The 11th is not a dusthana, so dignity alone decides. The Bhrigu Sutras' malefic-company clause and the commentator's Dusthana-lord exception are not part of the test.

Outside Aries, Leo and Libra the dignity is the fivefold relation of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55-58: the natural half fixed (Moon, Mars, Jupiter friends; Venus, Saturn enemies; Mercury neutral), the temporary half from your chart (the sign lord 2, 3, 4, 10, 11 or 12 signs from the Sun is a temporary friend). Only Friend or Great Friend counts as Friendly.

  • Always favourable: Gemini rising (Sun exalted) and Libra rising (Sun in Leo).
  • Favourable if the sign lord sits in a temporary-friend position: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn and Aquarius rising (Sun in Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio or Sagittarius).
  • Favourable only if Mercury is in a neighbouring position: Leo and Scorpio rising (Sun in Gemini or Virgo).
  • Never favourable: Sagittarius rising (debilitated), Aries and Pisces rising (Saturn's signs), Cancer rising (Venus's Taurus).

The dasha panel calls the Sun good only if exalted, Moolatrikona or in its own sign, challenging if debilitated, in an enemy sign or in a dusthana, neutral otherwise; for the 11th that "good" grade coincides with the Bhrigu Sutras' immense-wealth case. The Sun Mahadasha page sets out both tests.

Strength, and the aspect on the 5th

The 11th is a Panaphara, and BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 5 gives a planet there half of Kendradi Bal. Directional strength, by the arithmetic of Ch. 27 Sl. 7 set out on the Sun in the 4th house page, is measured for the Sun from the 4th house; the 11th is one sign past the peak at the 10th, so it remains high. The Shad Bala calculator shows the figures.

From the 11th the Sun aspects the 5th; aspectedHouses('sun', 11) returns [5]. This geometry may explain why two Ch. 24 verses trade income against children. The Bhrigu Sutras' commentator (p. 30) uses the same aspect to explain the "diplomatic talk" sutra, the 5th signifying diplomacy; no text gives a separate result for the aspect, so this page states none; the engine counts it as a malefic aspect on any planet in your 5th. For the house, see the 5th house; for the Sun in it, the Sun in the 5th.

The 11th lord decides the flow

BPHS Ch. 22, the 11th-house chapter, is eleven verses long and nearly every one is about the lord. Sl. 2: the 11th lord in the 11th, in an angle or a trine, or exalted even "though in combustion", gives many gains. Sl. 11: no gains in spite of numerous efforts if the lord is in fall, combust, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th with a malefic. Read precisely, that last verse does not say there will be no effort; it says effort will not convert.

With the Sun in your 11th, the 11th lord is the lord of the Sun's sign, the same planet whose position decides the engine's dignity verdict. Jupiter is the fixed significator of the 11th (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34), and Jupiter in the 11th house covers it there. The 2nd house, what is kept, is the other half of the wealth reading: income is the 11th, what is retained the 2nd, and what leaves the 12th.

Exchanges in Ch. 22 that run through the Sun

Three of Ch. 22's gain verses are exchanges between the 11th lord and another lord, and with the Sun in the 11th the Sun is always the other half of any exchange involving the 11th lord: the Sun sits in the 11th lord's sign, so an exchange needs the 11th lord in Leo. Which verse that completes depends on which house the Sun rules.

  • Leo rising, Sl. 8: an exchange between the Ascendant lord and the 11th lord. The Sun is the Ascendant lord in Gemini; Mercury, the 11th lord, would need to be in Leo, the 1st.
  • Cancer rising, Sl. 9: an exchange between the 2nd lord and the 11th lord, "abundant fortunes after marriage". The Sun is the 2nd lord in Taurus; Venus would need to be in Leo, the 2nd. BPHS Ch. 13 Sl. 4 reads the same exchange as "wealth will be acquired".
  • Gemini rising, Sl. 10: an exchange between the 3rd lord and the 11th lord, wealth "through co-borns". The Sun is the 3rd lord, exalted in Aries; Mars would need to be in Leo, the 3rd.

Ch. 22 attaches figures in gold coins and ages to several of its verses. This page reads them as illustrations of grade inside a court economy, and this app computes none of them. What the exchange verses show is the shape of the reasoning: gains increase with the number of supports the 11th lord has, and an exchange with a good house's lord is one such support.

Argala from the 11th

BPHS Ch. 31 Sl. 2-9 say a planet in the 4th, 2nd or 11th from any house or planet causes Argala, intervention, on it, and a planet in the 3rd from that point obstructs it. A Sun in the 11th house is in the 11th from the Ascendant, so it casts Argala on the Lagna, obstructed by any planet in your 3rd. Sl. 11-17 add that an unobstructed Argala with Drishti on the 11th house denotes "gains". The Argala calculator works these out house by house. BPHS Ch. 29 Sl. 22 reads the sources of gain from the 11th counted from the Lagna Pada, which the Arudha Lagna calculator gives the starting point for.

Saravali adds a timing remark about the house class: the effects of planets in Panapharas "are felt in the middle age". The 11th is a Panaphara. It is a single statement about a class of houses, and this app does not apply it.

Timing, and a contradiction inside BPHS

The Sun's Mahadasha lasts six years (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15) and recurs as an Antardasha in every other period; the Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives the dates. Ch. 47 Sl. 7-11 list the Sun "in a Kendr, in Labh" among the conditions of a strong Sun dasha, with wealth, felicity and honours from the government. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 say the dashas of planets placed in the 3rd, 6th and 11th "will prove unfavourable", exempting only Rahu and Ketu.

The text does not reconcile the two, but Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 end with the working method: judge the dasha after taking into account the planet's placement and its relationships. For Libra rising, where the Sun is also the 11th lord, Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 give its dasha "obstacles in gains of wealth and the possibility of diseases"; this app's theme reads "gains that come with some obstacles, and health matters worth watching".

Sub-periods are explained in Antardasha and Pratyantar. For transits, the Gochar calculator counts from the natal Moon and marks the 11th from the Moon favourable for a malefic: "real gains through direct effort", for about a month. That is a separate thing from a natal Sun in the 11th house.

Why favourable: Jupiter, lord of Pisces, is in Gemini, the 4th sign from the Sun, a temporary and natural friend. No malefic shares the Sun's sign, so the Bhrigu Sutras' expenditure clause does not apply; the Sun is neither exalted nor in Leo, so their immense-wealth case does not either.

What the texts add. With Taurus rising the Sun rules the 4th: Ch. 24 Sl. 47. The 11th lord, Jupiter, is in the 2nd, the other wealth house; Ch. 24 Sl. 122 reads that as all kinds of wealth. Ch. 22 Sl. 3 would add great gains if the 2nd lord, Mercury, were in an angle with Jupiter; Mercury is in the 12th. For Taurus rising Jupiter also rules the 8th, the pairing BPHS Ch. 34 calls specifically harmful in an 11th lord. The Sun's aspect falls on the Moon in Virgo, the 5th. The 11th from the Sun is Capricorn, the 9th house, where Mars, Saturn and Rahu sit. The page lists these and does not net them.

Your own chart

  1. Confirm the Sun is in the eleventh sign from your Ascendant in the birth chart calculator.
  2. Is the Sun exalted or in Leo (immense wealth in the Bhrigu Sutras)? Does it share its sign with a malefic (heavy expenditure)?
  3. Does the Sun rule the 6th, 8th or 12th (the commentator's exception)? Read its row of the Ch. 24 table.
  4. Find the 11th lord (the lord of the Sun's sign) and apply BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 2 and Sl. 11.
  5. Read the 11th from the Sun (your 9th house) and from the Moon, as BPHS Ch. 7 asks.
  6. Look at the 2nd house and its lord too; the career and money feature weights the 2nd and 11th highest.

Method and limits are on the methodology page; the books on the sources page.

Readings that go too far

  • "The Sun in the 11th means wealth." The texts lean that way, but BPHS judges the house through its lord (Ch. 22), and the Bhrigu Sutras attach heavy expenditure to a Sun with a malefic.
  • "It makes a person cold." Saravali says lacking affection; the Bhrigu Sutras say nothing of temperament. One verse is not a character.
  • "Malefics in the 11th are always harmless." BPHS Ch. 21 Sl. 11 reads Rahu, the Sun, Saturn and Mars together there as a cessation of duties.
  • "The Sun's dasha is good because it is in the 11th." BPHS says so in Ch. 47 and the opposite in Ch. 48; it asks for placement and relationships to be weighed.
  • "The 11th is the house of friends." That is the modern significations list; BPHS lists income, prosperity and goods.

Questions about the Sun in the 11th

Is the Sun in the 11th house good?
Most texts read it well: Saravali Ch. 30 Sl. 12 gives money and success (with a cold, serving temperament), the Bhrigu Sutras income from agriculture and wealth through wealth, immense in own sign or exaltation. A malefic beside it brings heavy expenditure.
Which rising signs give the strongest Sun in the 11th?
Gemini rising (Sun exalted, ruling the 3rd) and Libra rising (Sun in its own Leo, ruling the 11th). BPHS Ch. 34 adds a caution for Libra: lordship of the 11th itself is counted among the evil lordships.
What does the Sun aspect from the 11th?
The 5th house. None of the three texts gives a separate verse for it; the 11th-5th opposition may explain why two Ch. 24 verses trade income against children.
Why read the 11th from the Sun?
BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 39-43 ask for the 10th and 11th to be read from the Sun as well. With the Sun in the 11th house, the 11th from it is your 9th house.
Is the Sun's dasha favourable with this placement?
BPHS gives both answers: Ch. 47 counts the Sun in the 11th as a strong-dasha condition, and Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 list dashas of planets in the 11th as unfavourable. This app grades the dasha by dignity and house only.
Does this placement say anything about elder siblings or friends?
Not in the Sun verses. Those meanings come from the Bhrigu Sutras edition's modern significations list, not from BPHS Ch. 11.
Does the Sun in the 11th count toward Saravali's Dhana Yoga?
No. That verse counts benefics in the four Upachayas (3, 6, 10 and 11): all of them for much wealth, two for moderate, one for little. The Sun is a natural malefic, so it is not counted, though it occupies one of the four houses.
What if my 11th lord is weak?
BPHS Ch. 22 Sl. 11 gives no gains in spite of numerous efforts when the 11th lord is in fall, combust, or in the 6th, 8th or 12th with a malefic. With the Sun in your 11th, that lord is the lord of the Sun's sign. Read precisely, it describes effort that does not convert, not an absence of effort.
Does the app give a different reading if the Sun rules the 11th?
The house line depends only on dignity and house. If the Sun rules your 11th (Libra rising), it is in Leo, its own sign, so the favourable line prints; the dasha panel separately shows the 11th lord's Ch. 48 theme during the Sun's periods.
Is a Sun transiting the 11th from my Moon the same?
No. That month-long transit is counted from the Moon and marked favourable for a malefic. The natal placement is counted from the Ascendant.
